Here is a hilarious warning to all those who think automatic translation programmes are useful: Google Translate error sees Spanish town advertise clitoris festival

Hello translation group and welcome to my English user page. Here's the link back to my user page on the German wikipedia: AnTransit, where, amongst other things, you will find the link to Freiburg's Wikipedia Stammtisch.

Here is the link to KW's page OberMegaTrans

There you will find a list of articles we've worked on over the years. See below for the current semester's work.

You can find a list of requests for translation from German to English here

How to... edit

  1. create a user page for the work in progress (see below for example)
  2. you have the options "source" editor and "visual" editor. Copy form the source for your translation, so you automatically copy the HTML, which makes it easier to copy the links, references and structure of your text.
  3. do the translation:)
  4. check the links to other articles in the English Wikipedia AND add links from articles to your translation
  5. check references: copy and paste. Nb. make sure you copy the original article you are translating from the HTML version (edit source on the menu button), not the "visual editor", - otherwise you will not be copying the references
  6. add images (from wiki commons): copy the HTML from the "Quelltext" and paste into your article, then change "Datei" to "File" and "mini" to "thumbnail"
  7. add categories at the bottom of your article: click on the category in the German article, then on the English language link - if there is no English link, the category doesn't exist in the English Wikipedia, so just leave it
  8. add tags (see below)
  9. create a new page for the article in the English Wikipedia: do this by searching for the title of your article; the no-result gives you the option of creating the page
  10. add the language link: see edit links on left hand navigation panel

Templates edit

We need to add the following templates to our published translation (copy them from the edit mode of this page):

1. If we have started publishing but not finished we should insert this template:

Insert the template above and replace 'Etwas' with the German name of the article.

Obviously this should be removed once we've finished.

2.

This tag needs to appear - on the talk page - for copyright reasons

Just copy and replace "whatever" with the name of the (German) original article.

3.

Once published, we can leave this up if the article still needs proofreading for language errors

4.

German Wikipedia edit

There is no longer a template for "this is a translation from x to y" on German wikipedia, but the following link provides information on the procedure to follow re. protecting copyright: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorlage:%C3%9Cbersetzung

It should look something like this:

week 3 (date) edit

  1. translation of (name of article) - number of words ... - time taken ...
  2. addition of links, references, etc - number of additions - time taken...
  3. proofread (name of article) - time taken
