The Libraries Vienna are a network of libraries which are managed by the city of Vienna. They are mainly concerned with enabling broad public education, whilst the also city owned Library of Vienna in the city hall is focussed on scientific work.

Beside the main library at the "Neubaugürtel", the libraries Vienna maintain 38 branching libraries in alsmost all districts of Vienna. The "mobile libraries", which were established in 1958 and took on the form of so called "Bookbusses", visiting designated places in Vienna -schools for example-, were closed down in 2009.[3]

Neben Büchern, die einen Querschnitt durch alle Themen, von Sachbüchern über Ratgebern, Kinderbücher, Belletristik bis zu Wiener Literatur bieten, verleihen die Büchereien Wien auch Audio-CDs (Klassik, Jazz, Volksmusik, Rock und Pop), CD-ROMs, DVDs, Computerspiele, Audio- und Videokassetten. Die Medien sind in Freihandbereichen frei zugänglich und können entweder an Ort und Stelle benutzt oder entliehen werden. Oft gibt es eigene „Leseecken“ für Migranten mit Büchern aus dem jeweiligen Heimatland. Jede Zweigstelle verfügt zumindest über einen Computer für Katalog- und Internetrecherchen. 2004 verzeichneten die Wiener Büchereien 5,265 Millionen Entlehnungen von 129.125 Leserinnen und Lesern.

Beside books, which offer insights to all topics, ranging from non-fiction over guides, childrens books, balletristic to viennese literature, the libraries Vienna also lend audio-CDs (classic, jazz, folk music, rock and pop),CD-ROMs, DVDs, computer games, audio- and video cassetes. These pieces of media are displayed in open-access areas where they can either be rented or used in place. In many instances there are "reading corners" for migrants with books from the respective homelands. Each branching library has at least one computer for catalogue- and internet research. The libraries Vienna have registered 5,265 million lendings by 129.125 readers.

Seit 30. September 2010 können in der Virtuellen Bücherei Wien zahlreiche digitale Medien per Download rund um die Uhr ausgeliehen werden. Diese Medien können heruntergeladen und auf dem Computer oder anderen Geräten wie E-Book-Reader oder MP3-Player genutzt werden. Um eMedien ausleihen zu können, wird eine gültige Büchereikarte der Büchereien Wien und ein Computer mit Internet-Anschluss benötigt. Die „Rückgabe“ erfolgt automatisch, nach Ablauf der Nutzungsdauer kann das eMedium nicht mehr geöffnet werden und steht sofort wieder anderen Nutzern zur Verfügung. Somit können auch keine Versäumnisgebühren anfallen. Since 30th September 2010, noumerous digital pieces of media can be rented at all times via download through the virtual library Vienna. These pieces of media can be downloaded and used on coputers or other devices like E-book-readers or MP3-players. To rent eMedia, a valid library-card of the libraries Vienna and a computer with internet access is required. 1979 wurde die Geschäftsgruppeneinteilung des Wiener Magistrates reformiert und die Städtischen Büchereien aus dem Kulturamt ausgegliedert und der neu geschaffenen Magistratsabteilung 13 für Bildung und außerschulische Jugendbetreuung unterstellt. Unter dem Leiter Franz Pascher (1976 bis 1998) wurde die Elektronische Datenverarbeitung eingeführt. Unter dem Leiter Alfred Pfoser (1998 bis 2007) kam es zur Einrichtung eines online zugänglichen Bibliothekskatalogs. Aufgrund von Platzmangel für die Buchbestände, wurde am Urban Loritz-Platz ein neues Gebäude für die Hauptbücherei errichtet und 2003 eröffnet. Im Jahr 2008 übernahmen Elke Bazalka als wirtschaftliche Leiterin und Markus Feigl als bibliothekarischer Leiter gemeinsam die Führung der Büchereien Wien.[8] Seit 2010 werden digitale Medien (E-Books, E-Audios und E-Papers) auch zum Download angeboten. Ende 2012 verfügte man über rund 17.200 solcher digitalen Medien, im Jahr 2012 kam es zu rund 155.000 Entlehnungen in diesem Bereich. Seit 2011 ist die media wien (die ehemalige Landesbildstelle) Teil der Büchereien Wien und stellt mit dem media wien medienverleih zahlreiche Medien wie Filme, Themenboxen und CD-ROMs zur Verfügung. Im Jahr 2012 zählte man einen Bestand von 1,524 Millionen Medien, 39 Zweigstellen, 5,7 Millionen Entlehnungen und 210.937 Benutzer.[7] Seit Mai 2016 und dem Wechsel Feigls zum Büchereiverband Österreichs ist Elke Bazalka die alleinige Leiterin der Büchereien.[9]

The business group division of the viennese magistrate was reformed in 1979 and the city libraries were outsourced and assigned to the newly formed municipal department 13 of education and extra-curricular youth services. Am 11. Juni 2019 bemerkten die Büchereien Wien, dass sie Ziel eine Hackerangriffs geworden sind. Dabei wurde eine Datenbank mit teilweise personenbezogenen Daten von über 713.000 Nutzern kopiert. Diese Daten wurden später online gestellt.

On the 11 June of 2019, the libraries of vienna realised, that they have been the target of a hackerattack. Data of 713.000 users was copied from a database that partly contained personal data. These pieces of information were then made public online.

Mit August 2020 übernahm Christian Jahl, der bislang die Leitung der Hauptbücherei am Gürtel innehatte, die Leitung der Büchereien der Stadt Wien.

Im September 2021 eröffnete in der Seestadt Aspern eine neue Zweigstelle der Büchereien. Für diesen neuen Standort wurden zwei kleinere Standorte am Siegesplatz und in der Erzherzog-Karl-Straße im 22. Bezirk aufgelassen.

A new branching librariy was opened in the seaside town Aspern in September 2021. However, in exchange for this new library, two samller ones at the "Siegesplatz" and in the "Erzherzog-Karl-Straße" of the 22nd district were closed down.

Mit Februar 2022 übernahm Bernhard Pöckl (* 1981) die Leitung der Büchereien Wien von seinem Vorgänger Christian Jahl.

In the Febuary of 2022, Bernhard Pöckl (*1981) replaced his predecessor Christian Jahl as the head of the libraries of vienna.

Makroscopical traits

The thin-fleshed cap is 1,5-4 cm wide, arched or flattened, and more or less convex. The cap is smooth, matte and faintly ocre or faintly brown in case of humidity. The colours turn pale to a whiteish tone if the cap is dry. Old fruiting bodies have a wavy and slightly grooved edge.

The lamella are strikingly tight packed and almost exposed. In early stages, they are whiteish and later turn to a creamish to leather-yellow or pink-brownish colour. The spore powder is white.

The stem can be up to 10 cm long, stiff, hollow, smooth and grooved along its length. It is red-brownish coloured and purple-grey and fine-flaky striped. The tip of the stem is expanded, resembling a button, at the beginning of the gills. The basis is covered with a white felty mycelium weave. The thin, tough flesh is creme-brownish and gives off a weak, aromatic mushroom scent. Its taste is described as mild.

Microscopic traits

Die glatten, inamyloiden Sporen sind 7–10 µm lang und 3,5–4,2 (–5) µm breit. Sie sind leicht tränenförmig, ellipsoid oder spindelförmig und nicht zyanophil, das heißt, sie lassen sich mit methyl blue nicht anfärben. Die keuligen, viersporigen basidium messen 22,4–26,6 µm × 5–7 µm. [[]]n fehlen, die 27,5–70 µm langen und 2,8–5,6 µm breiten Cheilozystiden sind zahlreich. Sie sind unregelmäßig keulig bis zylindrisch geformt und gewunden. Manchmal können sie unregelmäßig ausgesackt oder korallenförmig verzweigt sein. Das inamyloide Lamellartrama ist parallel bis verwoben. Die Hyphen sind 3,5–7,8 (–14,8) µm breit, glatt, dünnwandig und durchscheinend. Teilweise enthalten sie stark lichtbrechende, ölige Tröpfchen. Auch das Huttrama ist inamyloid und lose verwoben. Die Hyphen sind 5,5–13,2 µm breit. Die Huthaut (Pileipellis) ist nur schwach differenziert und besteht aus kriechenden, verzweigten und radial orientierten Hyphen. Die hyalinen und dünnwandigen Zellen sind 2,8–7 µm breit und meist glatt. Gelegentlich können sie fein mit blass gelbbraunen Pigment spiralig bis unregelmäßig gebändert inkrustiert sein. Schnallenverbindungen sind in allen Geweben ausgebildet.

The smooth, inamyloid spores are 7–10 µm long and 3,5–4,2 (–5) µm wide. They are slightly tear-shaped, ellipsoid or spindle shaped. They are not zyanophil, meaning that thay can not be dyed with methyl blue. The club-shaped, basidia containing four spores are 22,4–26,6 µm × 5–7 µm big. Pleurocystidia are absent, but there are many 27,5–70 µm long and 2,8–5,6 µm wide cheilocystidia. They are unevenly club- or cylinder-shaped and tortous. In some instances, they can be unevenly battered or coral-like branched. The inamyloid Lamellartrama is parallely interwoven. The hypha are 3,5–7,8 (–14,8) µm wide, smooth, thin-walled and translucent. They partially contain strangly refractive lipid dropplets. Also the Huttrama is inamyloid and loosely interwoven. The Hyphen are 5,5–13,2 µm wide. The capskin (Pileipellis) is just slightly differentiated and consists of crawling, branched, and radially orientated hyphen. The hyalinen and thin walled cells are 2,8–7 µm wide and mostly smooth. Occassionally, they can be spirally and unevenly incrusted by a fine, faint yellow-brown pigment. Clamp connections are present in all tissues.
