If you are in fact the creator of the images (and there is no reason to believe that is the case), they are released as a free license, which means you no longer can control how the images are used. Please also read WP:OWN. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 19:49, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Changes to "Maya art"

Hallo Gargoyle, I have been doing a lot of work on "Maya art" and now found that someone had been needlessly removing and replacing illustrations, and adding text without references or explanations. So, I tried to return to the article in its original state. I also intended to explain why I don't think the changes were for the better. Then you interfered, obviously with good reason. So, tell me, what is the course I should now take?77.162.130.139 (talk) 18:41, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

WP:RIB

Hey there, IG! I saw you made and added a ribbon at WP:RIB. As a Ribbon enthusiast myself, I'm wondering if you'd be able to make a couple of Ribbons for me, just two or three, to help me get the Placeholders off my Userpage. I love the idea, I just have no image editing skill to be able to, y'know, do anything. Cheers! Achowat (talk) 12:58, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

What I did wasn't very complicated. I just copy-pasted color blocks from preexisting ribbons onto a solid color ribbon as background and made sure that the lines in the "fabric" matched up. This led to slight problems with the shadowing at the bottom, so it's not ideal. You can only see this easily at high resolution though, and it still looks better than trying to enlarge one of the small ribbons. I think there is an image-editing technique that some of the more prolific ribbon creators utilize (this ribbon was my first). I might suggest asking one of them if you want to be more creative in your ribbon design. What barnstars do you want to ribbonize? Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 13:36, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
I need File:Vandal award ribbon bar.png turned into a Shadowed Version and some design (and no, I don't particularly care) for {{The WikiProject Barnstar}} (or it's alt). A ribbon appropriate for File:Wiknic barnstar.svg would also be nice, but as a PUA, I can live without it. Achowat (talk) 14:57, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
I made a ribbon equivalent for the Vandal Whacking Stick: File:Vandal Whacking Stick Ribbon.png. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 23:29, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi IronGargoyle. It's nice to see you back closing DRVs after a hiatus for a few years. Your excellent closes of difficult DRVs have been missing for far too long. Best, Cunard (talk) 05:46, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

TOFOP deletion review

Hi!

Thanks for the userfication of the TOFOP page, it'll be fun to be able to work on it! I'm pretty new to this whole wiki thing though, so I have no idea why the request for deletion was denied... You said "The article title in question is not protected, and the DRV in question is not addressing a CSD G4 action.", but I have no idea what that means. Can you please tell me why it was denied, and what exactly it is I need to do to get the page back online? I'm not at all complaining about your decision, I'm just new, and confused...

Thanks!

Oscar Tiggyspawn93 (talk) 22:05, 23 July 2012 (UTC)tiggyspawn93

Nothing was denied. What the closure basically means is that you are free to move the article from your userspace back to TOFOP once you have improved it with the references that you have provided. I moved it into your userspace so you can take your time to improve the article, and don't have to worry about another editor quickly nominating it for deletion again while you edit it. Once you make an improved draft of the article, it might be helpful to ask someone at the Wikipedia:Help desk or Wikipedia:Teahouse to look it over before moving it from User:Tiggyspawn93/TOFOP to TOFOP. European Mantis

Hello! You wrote rv attempt at copy-paste move when you moved stuff about Mantis religiosa to the page European mantis. Is it alright to move pages by copying all the information and then putting it in another page? Common names are supposed to be capitalized but I guess people do not care much about that. I like it better when the latin name is the title of the page than when it is the common name. Was it not alright for me to put those pictures there? If it is not alright to write about this here then please email me at Baptist.Walter@yahoo.com about this. :D — Preceding unsigned comment added by Happy1892 (talkcontribs) 23:08, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure what the title of this page should ultimately be. The page WP:COMMONNAME may be of some guidance for you in this regard. In any case, you should really discuss issues like this on the talk page of the article first. If you get consensus for the change, the page should be moved with the Special:MovePage function. Copy-pasting is not acceptable because it breaks the chain of attribution that is needed for Wikipedia's free licensing. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 00:50, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Attempts to vandalize Thomas_Aquinas?

User 71.237.133.57 keeps deleting section "Criticism" in Thomas Aquinas because this user thinks that Bertrand Russell misunderstood Aquinas' philosophy. I believe that in XXI century, the article on Aquinas' must have a section of criticism otherwise the article is very biased. I undid the deletion. Closing DRVs too soon

Hi IronGargoyle, I generally find myself in agreement with your closures, however you are closing things too early. From the DRV page "A nominated page should remain on deletion review for at least seven days." The closure of Liam McEwan's DRV in particular is problematic as I could easily see that one going a different way given the 7 days. But I'll suggest you undo any closure that was less than the full 7 days... Thanks, Hobit (talk) 00:56, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

I disagree with this close. It was closed prematurely. ( I was still thinking about it.) WP:SNOW doesn’t apply, in fact I don’t even see a strong consensus. I was actually leaning towards “List at AfD”, as questions of notability are questions for AfD, not DRV, and this subject has never been subject to a formal deletion discussion. The purpose of speedy deletions is to avoid wasting time on uncontestable deletion discussions. The multiple recreations demonstrate that this deletion discussion would be contestable. For future editors, an AfD on record is a better reference and warning than a speedy deletion log. In general contested speedies, such as A7, (not G9, G10, G12, F7 or F9) should be speedy listed at XfD. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 03:00, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Ugh... you're both completely right that it was premature (I'm not going to rehash the close as I've reverted both of them). I was looking at the time stamp and not the date. I just assumed it was the right date because it had moved into the last space before the "recent discussions" header. I didn't notice that there were days missing in the log. I blame a lack of sleep and changing time zones. Sorry, IronGargoyle (talk) 05:52, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

I deleted the article solely because you blanked it. Blanking by an article's creator is one of the criteria for speedy deletion. It is assumed that editors who blank their own articles want them to be deleted. That being said, an earlier the draft of the article was speedily deleted by another administrator as because it did not assert importance and because it was a copyright violation (both of which are also criteria for speedy deletion). Because of this, I will not restore the article. Please review Wikipedia:Your first article thoroughly, as well as the important policies of verifiability and notability before you create any more articles on this or other topics. Protection Kudos

I just wanted to applaud your extremely amusing and very attentive work on the immediate semi-protection on Tim Pawlenty article before the TV segment had even finished airing. He's a rare case where viewing could probably be considered part of your dutiful Wikipedia volunteer work. So... win-win? This might be the first time a "Colbert edit" was prevented from reaching an article in the first place. Kudos! Tstorm(talk) 03:53, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

You may want to extend that protection a few more hours. Colbert re-broadcasts three more times until 7:25 PM tomorrow. Vttor (talk) 03:59, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
I've updated the protection. Thanks for both the notes. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 04:09, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
I noticed the protection seems to end before the re-runs finish up. Especially if that protection end was EST and not PST. Remember that especially during Olympics people are watching their regular shows (including late: night) either during a re-run, online, or they use a dvr or on demand (comedy central makes the daily show and colbert report available almost immediately and for at least a week). Just an FYI. 174.254.49.194 (talk) 07:05, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

A Query from a Canadian Reporter

My name is Debra Black and I'm a reporter with the Toronto Star, Canada's largest newspaper. I was directed by the media folks to send you a message to see if you could comment about the protection of Tim Pawlenty's Wikipedia page after Stephen Colbert's broadcast urging viewers to edit it, following a news story that look at a theory that an upswing in edits on Sarah Palin and Joe Biden's Wikipedia pages proceeded the announcement that they would be vice-presidential candidates. I was wondering if you can comment on why you decided to protect the page and only allow auto-confirmed users on it. And what role Colbert's broadcast had in making that decision. You can reach me at dzblack@thestar.ca or 416-869-4850. Thanks in advance. Debra — Preceding unsigned comment added by 192.206.151.130 (talk) 18:27, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Concerning the confusion between Generation Y & "Generation Z."

There is a lot of confusion it seems between Generation Y and "Millennials." Millenials are those who have grown up in front of a phone or a computer screen & prefer that as the chosen method of communication. This generation starts with those born roughly 17 years ago in 1995. The cultural difference between "Y" from the early to mid 80s is DRASTICALLY different from that of those born within 5 years of affordable satellite tv, the removal of antena tv, the downfall of dial-up, and the upspring of Apple. You should talk to & coordinate with the writers of the pages for Generation Z & the "Millennial" pages to come up with a more solid difference between Y & Millenials, and culturally, that division is 1995. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 209.243.38.4 (talk) 02:58, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Possible repeated spamming by IP user 12.68.41.130

Hello there. I see you have warned the user twice in the recent past. I am not sure if this would qualify, but it seems a bit suspicious to reference a YouTube video mention in the reference section. Zepppep (talk) 11:24, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Not the best sourcing. It's definitely a grey area because it seems pretty likely that the editor has a conflict of interest with the Positive Coaching Alliance. It looks like they are at least trying to improve and use the link to support information in the article though, as opposed to just adding the link without any context as they did when I warned them. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 11:33, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
Would definitely agree it seems to fall in a grey area and will defer to your experienced opinion. I am thinking of removing everything after the first comma in the typical sentence this user posts, namely because it seems soapboxy and because the alliance is linkable: "____ is also currently a member of the National Advisory Board for Positive Coaching Alliance, a national non-profit organization committed to providing student-athletes with a positive, character-building youth sports experience." Any thoughts? Zepppep (talk) 12:10, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
I took a closer look at the user's edits and it seems pretty clear that they are a single purpose account only here to promote their organization. Given the number of supposed advisory board members and the lack of independent sources, I've reverted all the links as spam. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 21:43, 14 August 2012 (UTC)
So the grey is now black and white. Nice job. We all like seeing a little less spam around here...Zepppep (talk) 00:02, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi IronGargoyle the reason why i edited for Samia Yusuf Omar is that she drowned on Mediterranean sea and it was mention by Somali Olympic heads in London and I provide the video but you wouldnt understand because they are speaking in Somali. The reason I reverted it is because the death was cited to a youtube video. Youtube is not considered to be a reliable source for important information such as that. I wasn't testing anything; I made a change in earnest to the Pytheas article where I argued against equating Mictis, Ictis and Corbulo, and gave reasons. I disturbed the original text very minimally. One problem that kept coming up, which I don't understand, is that somehow my editing caused the insertion of <a class="ktg6us78hf8vdu7" href="#"> ... </a> into the text at seemingly random intervals. This was very annoying and I tried to delete all occurrences, but it kept popping up in the damnedest places. I guess you may have to correct it if this is "your" article. Best wishes, Rainouart — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.126.74.68 (talk) 22:29, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

Are/were you trying to edit from a mobile phone? That strikes me as the most likely explanation. I've never seen anything like that before though. I saw the bizarre html code show up in a list of recent changes to Wikipedia and assumed you were testing something out. My suggestion would be try again on a different computer. When you do, if you could add a more precise citation that would be helpful. If you just give your own opinion, it's considered to be original research, which isn't allowed. Opps, I'm a little red-faced! I saw what looked like a nonsense word that included a poor spelling of "penis" by an anon and had a knee jerk reaction. I should be more careful, I guess. Gandydancer (talk) 00:30, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Greetings... and proposed deletion

Greetings IronGargoyle. Have just received your note informing me of the proposed deletion of Joe Evans (musician). However, contrary to the instructions therein regarding removal of the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, I find no such notice to remove. Is there a mistake here or has the procedure changed without the wording of the template being updated? Curious regards, --Technopat (talk) 19:15, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Somebody else removed the notice, then it was speedily deleted because later versions were a copyright violation, then the current version was restored. I haven't decided yet if I am going to take it to AfD or not. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 19:18, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Are we talking 'bout the same article? I see no mention in the revision history of any of the above. Confused regards, --Technopat (talk) 19:23, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
That's because the revision with the prod was deleted by someone else. The article was restored without the copyright violating edits. Those edits not restored included the prod notice. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 19:25, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Slightly clearer. So where do we go from here? Do I still have to explain why I consider the guy to be notable on the article's talk page to prevent the proposed deletion or have the doubts been resolved? Regards, --Technopat (talk) 19:32, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
It would help if there were some more reliable sources on his page that help establish his notability. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 19:33, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Right, thanks. I'll see what I can come up with. Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 19:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Amazing Cooking Kids (season 3)

This is a hoax. All of the sources in the article are for the second season version. The official website has not been updated in a year and I even Googled some of the names in the article and they all point back to Wikipedia. This page should not have been kept in CSD for 2 days.—Ryulong (琉竜) 19:37, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

You're probably right that it is a hoax, but it certainly doesn't meet the criteria for WP:CSD#G3. I won't remove the tag you re-added, but please consider that if it was in C:CSD for 2 days, it might have been because no one else was willing to bite on your logic that this meets G3. Why not just take it to AfD with the rationale you posted on my talk page? Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 19:51, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
I am not going to waste a week at AFD when it should be taken care of post haste. It is a hoax, plain and simple, and made to look like a legitimate article. This is a textbook example of WP:CSD#G3.—Ryulong (琉竜) 09:00, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I don't get on IRC much at all. That said, I was just being glib about my own lack of knowledge in that area. I think the article is probably fine. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 12:46, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Superbad changes

I couldn't find a source to specifically state my change, but it is simply a fact. It was Jonah Hill's first lead role, Emma Stone's first major role, Mintz-Plasse first role, and the movie launched them all into instant stardom. No, there's no source I can cite, but it's still an important fact about the movie, just as the phrase "The film was one of a string of hit films produced by Judd Apatow" which is also not cited (and true) nevertheless you left it. You can put my phrase back and leave a "citation needed" notice, but removing it completely is completely uncalled for. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.163.58.204 (talk) 06:37, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of List of banjo bands (worldwide)

Hi Iron, I've just seen your note about deleting the list I created quite some time ago. Would you mind putting it back while we discuss your concerns? Apparently you have no problem with the existence of a list of cellists so I am unsure as to your personal opposition to a list a banjo bands. Regards, --Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 16:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

p.s., I, like you, are busy in the real world. In fact I'm producing an all banjo jazz festival this weekend, Sept 8th & 9th, 2012, so please have patience with my responses as well. --Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 16:55, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
I don't have any personal opposition to lists of banjo bands, as long as there are notable banjo bands to include in that list. I undeleted the page and moved it to User:Scalhotrod/List of banjo bands (worldwide). This list should not include non-notable bands, and if you move it back to mainspace I will list it at AfD unless there are more bluelinks on the list. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 15:10, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi Iron, Thank you for retrieving it, I appreciate that. With regard to your concerns, within the banjo, banjo music, and jazz communities, all of these bands are notable. The fact that most of them do not have an associated WP article is unfortunate, but does not necessarily indicate that they are not notable to those respective communities. I am one of those that believes that "notability" on Wikipedia is a bit of a moving target and utterly relative. What is critical and vital to one is irrelevant to another, its just the way that the world works and Wikipedia should reflect that.

With regard to your demand (and I refer to it as such because of your comment to "AfD unless there are more bluelinks on the list), how many is enough? Is it a flat number or certain portion or percentage? Please understand, I'm not trying to obtuse or patronizing, but the list was seemingly just fine until your discovery of it so I am trying to better understand your criteria for making it acceptable to you. Best regards, Chris --Scalhotrod - Just your average banjo playing, drag racing, cowboy... (talk) 19:55, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Only one of the entries actually has its own article (Peninsula Banjo Band). One notable entry is not a list. It may be that the other bands are notable, but there is no proof (i.e., they are not verifiable). Proof of notability requires reliable and independent sources. None of the sources in the article are independent; they just link back to band websites. I don't think there is a set number that the list needs, but there really should be more than a tiny handful of verifiable, notable bands to justify a list on Wikipedia. At the very least, the entries retained in the list should have reliable, independent sources (even if some of the entries don't have articles yet themselves). Everything else should be removed. DYK nomination of Jumbo Jet (Six Flags Great Adventure) and Jumbo Jet (Morey's Piers)

Hello! Your submission of Jumbo Jet (Six Flags Great Adventure) and Jumbo Jet (Morey's Piers) at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and there still are some issues that may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:12, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

I was disappointed by your bad faith assumption at DYK that I had acted in pursuit of a conflict, 5 years after I an event in which I had forgotten your involvement. But since you don't trust my review, I'm quite happy for the article to be reviewed by another editor who doesn't arouse your suspicions.
When I looked again our 2007 disagreement over notability tagging, I saw that the main discussion on your talk page was followed by a further discussion on Cirith Ungol. So I went to Talk:Cirith Ungol#Notability_tag_restored_again to read the discussion, and then flicked over to the article Cirith Ungol to see what state it was in now. I was redirected to Minor places in Middle-earth#Cirith Ungol, and it turned out that the merger had been decided at AFD in November 2010. I had not participated in that AFD.
So it seems that five years on, our views on notability are no closer. But it is interesting to see that when Cirith Ungol finally came up for a substantive discussion, it was merged into a list of sub-topics of the parent topic. A similar approach was adopted for many other Middle Earth articles, and that might be a good solution for these short articles on roller-coasters which don't quite meet notability requirements. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 09:55, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

Hi IronGargoyle, Sorry I prodded an older version of the page, so didn't see tags you already had added. Please feel free to remove if you find the PROD inappropriate. Thanks --SMS Talk 20:43, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Generally things aren't re-prodded, otherwise I would have prodded it myself. I don't see why this can't be an example of WP:IAR though. The page is so godawfully written that it would take far more effort to sort out if it's even worthwhile to fix than it would to just delete it and hope another writer comes along if the subject is actually notable. AfD would be another option, but there would eventually be someone arguing that stuff shouldn't be deleted because its badly written. Well, when something is this badly written, I kinda think it should. Best, IronGargoyle (talk) 20:49, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

You have broken Wikipedia rules and I will report you

You do realise that you have deleted the Fantastic Shabalanga page while the page was still in the middle if an articles for deletion discussion? See this please.

Also, under the reasons you have to delete it, you wrote "Speedy deleted, vandalism" even though the page was not under a speedy deletion template and there was no evidence that there was any vandalism there. No one complained of vandalism, not even any admins. They just complained of notability, even though I provided an external link. --Kijoorete-Bahnhof (talk) 00:36, 10 September 2012 (UTC)

There was a speedy deletion template, the page was a hoax, and that's about all I have to say about that. If you continue to make inappropriate pages, it is likely you will be blocked from editing. IronGargoyle (talk) 01:13, 10 September 2012 (UTC)
