Welcome to the tenth newsletter from the Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
General news
- Growth team features are now fully deployed in Arabic Wikipedia and Basque Wikipedia (along with Czech, Korean, and Vietnamese Wikipedias). If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together if your wiki is eligible. Then, go through the checklist to start the process of configuring the features.
- We have deployed features that help newcomers find their newcomer homepage. These features were successful, and more than doubled the number of newcomers who find their homepage. In Czech Wikipedia, 72% of newcomers visit their homepage and in Korean Wikipedia, 49% of newcomers visit their homepage.
- You can now join the Growth discussion space on the Wikimedia Space. This space has been created during Wikimania, to coordinate initiatives around welcoming newcomers. Please come and say hello!

- Several members of the Growth team attended Wikimania in Stockholm. We helped organize a conference track around Community Growth, presented about our team's work, and had many conversations with community members from around the world.

- Alignment on newcomer retention: It seems like Wikimania attendees generally believe that newcomer retention is an important problem.
- Connecting offline to online: Enthusiasm for ideas that connect our features better to offline events, such as making homepage mentors correspond to offline mentors.
- Mentor dashboard: Experienced users requested a dashboard with which they could monitor newcomers who may need help.
Newcomer tasks -- feedback needed!
- The Growth team's main project right now is newcomer tasks, which will suggest easy edits for newcomers. It will be built as a new module for the newcomer homepage.
- We hope that this project will help newcomers build their skills before attempting more difficult edits, such as creating new articles or adding images.
- These are the three main challenges we've been working on:
- Where to find the tasks? After considering many different sources for tasks, we've decided to start by using maintenance templates, which are applied by editors on most wikis, and including tasks like copy editing, adding links, and adding references.
- How to match to interests? Research shows that users are more likely to work on articles that are related to their interests. We are currently prototyping methods to ask newcomers their interests and then find articles that match.
- How to guide the newcomer? Once a newcomer has selected a recommended article, they will need guidance on how to complete the edit. We have decided to use the help panel to provide that guidance while the newcomer edits.
- We are currently engineering on this feature, and we recently published notes from user tests that give mostly positive feedback.
- You can explore the design for newcomer tasks in these interactive mockups. We hope to hear from you about your thoughts on the project talk page. Do you think this could be helpful for newcomers? What are we missing?

You're probably not aware of this change, but Days of the Year pages are no longer exempt from WP:V and direct sources are required for additions. For details see the content guideline, the WikiProject Days of the Year style guide or the edit notice on any DOY page. New Page Review newsletter November 2019
Hello Paul2520,
This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.
- Getting the queue to 0
There are now 816 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.

- Coordinator
Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.
- This month's refresher course
Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.
- Tools
- It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
- It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
- Reviewer Feedback
Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.
- Second set of eyes
- Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
- Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
- Arbitration Committee
The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.
- Community Wish list
There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

List of unlawfully killed transgender people
Hello Paul2520, thanks for looking over my Changes, I'm still new to this. The Problem is, there is not really Citation for this. I just compared the Sources of the Cases 'Kira' and 'Nina Surgutskaya' and they look very similar, as both Reports are from the same Day, both Cases happened in Kursk, the described Murder is exactly identical and the Culprit is named Mikhail for both too (only the second one gives his Surname though). So I thought it would be redundant to have both as separate Cases. I didn't want to go as far as completely removing one of them, so I just included a Remark about this, to point out the high Probability that it is one and the same Case. - Hi, Glimmer-Vigdís! Thanks for following-up. It's great to have you on Wikipedia & I really appreciate you using critical thinking when editing.
- Unfortunately, what you are describing is original research, which is not the point of Wikipedia. We really need reliable sources to keep this encyclopedia a trustworthy reference.
- My suggestions are: (1) include both names, referencing both sources you mentioned. It's possible, unfortunately, that someone named Mikhail killed two trans people that day. Or possibly two different perpetrators named Mikhail. (2) hold-off until a source appears linking the cases.
- My suggestion is to follow option (1), but keep your eyes open for another source (you could set-up something like a Google alert, if you'd like).

Hello Paul, can you please help me to translate Jürgen Möller from the German Wikipedia into the English Wikipedia? Möller is a military historian and wrote many books about the end of the war in Germany, especially about the liberation by the American army. Möller has also researched Raymond J. Bowmann. I would be glad if you could bring the German article about Jürgen Möller on the English side. Rick and Morty
Hello. You recently performed an edit to the Rick and Morty article, in which you added a "missing" Notes list. Perhaps I'm missing something, but there are no notes listed at this time. There already exists a populated reference list. I see that the {{notelist}} template has been added which would automatically populate the list... provided someone adds notes within the article body. I'm not here to interfere with the edit, I'm just making an observation.

At the point in time I added the section yesterday, there was a note & the missing {{notelist}} caused the page to be in the maintenance Category:Pages with missing references list. I removed the section since it's now empty. This sometimes happens if a stray note was transcluded, perhaps from a table that's maintained in another article, and it gets changed/removed there. = paul2520 (talk) 14:04, 14 November 2019 (UTC)

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
General news
- Expanding to more wikis: the team is preparing to deploy Growth features to Ukrainian and Hungarian Wikipedias. Wikis that already have the features are Czech, Korean, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Basque Wikipedias. If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together if your wiki is eligible. Then you can go through the checklist to start the process of configuring the features.
- Mentor training: we tried out our first training for mentors with the Czech community, so that experienced users can build skills that help them retain newcomers.
- The guide for mentors has been updated. Translations are welcomed!
Help panel results
The help panel was first deployed to newcomers in January 2019, and we have now finished analyzing data to determine its impact. A brief summary is below, and more in-depth information can be found here (in English).
- In summary, although we have seen a good amount of usage of the help panel, the help panel has not shown an increase in activation (whether a user makes their first edit) or retention (whether a user returns to edit again).
- This is a disappointing result, and our team has discussed potential reasons for the result and ideas for the future. Although we have many ideas for how to improve the help panel, we have decided to keep our attention on the newcomer homepage and newcomer tasks projects for the coming months.
- We'll be using the help panel as part of the newcomer tasks project: using it to guide newcomers while they complete suggested edits.
- We welcome questions and thoughts about this on the project's talk page.
Newcomer tasks deployment
- The first version of the newcomer tasks workflow (V1.0) will be deployed in the next weeks on our 4 priority wikis. This version will suggest articles to edit based on maintenance templates. In this first version, we expect many newcomers to initiate the workflow, but not many to select articles to edit or complete edits. We expect future versions of the feature to increase those behaviors.
- We're excited about this project because the majority of newcomers visit their newcomer homepage, and this will be the first element of the homepage that clearly asks the newcomer to start editing.
- These are the next two versions of the feature, which are already being planned:
- V1.1 (topic matching): will allow newcomers to choose topics of interest (such as Art, Music, Sports, or Technology) to personalize their suggestions. After evaluating several approaches, we have decided to use a new ORES model built by the WMF Scoring team. The model will automatically identify the topic area of each article. We expect this to increase how often newcomers select articles to edit.
- V1.2 (guidance): once newcomers arrive on an article to edit, we will use the help panel to provide guidance about how to complete the editing task. We expect this to increase how many newcomers actually complete productive edits.
- The project page includes links to the designs of the workflow, and we welcome questions and thoughts on the talk page.

I saw you as the last editor. He contacted me yesterday about cleaning up the page so I did, making subsections editing and, akimg it more formal. I saw you were the last editor so I wanted to contact you so we could maybe work together on this?
Another wikipedian told me his page is being denied due to lack of notability which I think is very much up for dispute considering he not only has a lot of articles and news pieces to his name but is even listed on the 1st District 2020 Congressional Elections own wikipedia page. So that's just strange to me...
Any thoughts on what to do on that?

- Hi, Emmanuel Pacings, and thanks for reaching out. I'm happy to help newer editors like you working on new articles. I enjoy submitting articles to Did you know..., so if this article gets approved & meets the criteria, I would be more than happy to nominate it / help you through that process.
- I first urge you to review WP:COI, since you mention being in direct contact. Also WP:PAID, if the subject is compensating you. There are implications in either scenario.
- I'd say you could start a thread with one or both of the reviewers. I would recommend doing so on their talk page, and use
{{ping|User1|User2|...}}to ping them. Feel free to also ping me. It seems like you've done some work since the last edits, and have a case regarding notability. I'd be interested to see what the reviewer(s) say. - You also may be interested in Wikipedia:Essay directory#Notability. The reviewer didn't respond after I messaged him so I just decided to resubmit the article for review. After all I fixed all the problems listed. At least I think I did. But anyway thanks for all the help, you are not only kind but a real lifesaver. Have a good day wherever you are my friend!

David Gokhshtein
Hey Paul sorry to ask of this of you. You don't need to help if you don't want to, you've already been such a big help already so if you wanna wash your hands with me and this David article go right ahead I won't blame you. But apparently the article is still being denied due to lack of notability.
There's also the fact that I didn't disclose that he paid me. As since he wasn't hiring but more did it as a thank you I didn't know if I was technically an employee. That's easily fixable. Howeber they said the sources in the article aren't adequate?
I assumed they were considering they come from Forbes, Business Insider, and other notable companies as well? Can you I don't know help me out by maybe clarifying if I am right in my thinking here?
Also I appreciate you editing my Zombicorns article.

Thanks for your cleanup! I could use your help. Someone after you (Sphilbrick) reverted back and took away ALL other changes on 12/17 due to "copyright issue." But I think that only relates to one of the change at 14:47. How do I address? Do I need to rewrite so as not too close to the website copy. It also looks like some kind of bot was involved here? - Pinging Sphilbrick re: copyvio issues, since I cannot view or restore deleted edits; I was only editing because I noticed the page was added to Category:Pages with missing references list.
- In short, yes, we cannot copy/paste content unless the source has released the text into the public domain. See Wikipedia:Copyright violations and Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing to get started.
- It's best to have reliable sources that are not the subject of the article, anyway.

New Page Review newsletter December 2019
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.
Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.
Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

- Redirect autopatrol
A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.
- Source Guide Discussion
Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.
- This month's refresher course
While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Problem with the Portuguese People article

Persistent Vandalism on Portuguese People page

For the past couple of months, I’ve witnessed repeated vandalism against this page. The users are almost invariably from unsigned or VandalismUser temporary profiles based in Brazil or Spain or from Spanish/Hispanic users who, for different reasons have manifest anti-Portuguese sentiments. The most recent is this series of IP addresses I suspect by the same user who has an obsession with the racial contribution of Jews and Arabs being supposedly higher in Portugal than in Spain and also the Portuguese contributions in the New World discoveries. I’ve suggested making this page protected or semi-protected as it is highly counterproductive and tedious, having to deal with malicious and vandal edits. Can you help with this? - Hi, Melroross. Similar to KylieTastic (see discussion here), I feel ill-informed; I am nowhere near an expert on the topics being discussed. I did some maintenance edits, which is I believe why the other editor reached out to me.
- Wikipedia:Help desk and Wikipedia:Dispute resolution would be better places; I'm not sure I'm the best editor to mediate this dispute.
- I see the page has temporary restrictions; Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is a good place to learn more about requesting page protections.
- I would also encourage you to engage in the discussion at Talk:Portuguese people#Edit war. A cursory exploration suggests to me that the anonymous editor is now using a registered account & is open to discussion.

A permanent semi-protection as I see it from following this for a while, is the only way to keep this page protected from vandalism/malicious manipulation from users like the one reported above. For years I have been editing on and off until in the past few months I noticed something “intriguing”: Each time there was a “edit conflict” it was invariably caused by either Brazilians or Spaniards, or either of the two located elsewhere in the world but with ties to either or. Being partly Portuguese and having studied Humanities and Linguistics at the oldest and most prestigious Lusophone university, Coimbra, I am very confident in the History, Culture and Language of Portugal. I know only too well about the historical resentments from some Brazilians who blame the Portuguese for all which is wrong with Brazil today and some Spaniards who cannot comprehend why Portugal came to be and for over 900 years repudiated their many attempts to impose a united Iberia. I believe that the current independent movements in Catalonia may make more Spaniards feel that Galicia where they basically speak “old Portuguese” despite many centuries of “Hispanisation” where even surnames, names of towns and the language itself were suppressed and replaced as late as 1974, may also want independence or worse, join the Lusophone league of countries. The Spanish issue is deeper as historically the Portuguese sided with the English and in fact were the inspiration for NATO for instance. The English humiliated Spain and spread a racial rumour of “beyond France it’s all Africa” which was an insult aimed at the Spanish and their long, deep-rooted Moorish influence. The Portuguese expelled their Moors almost 3 centuries earlier and in terms of Islamic legacy or importance, this was much smaller in Portugal. Portuguese and Galician are mainly Iberian-Celtic, the two language variations are Romance and stem from the medieval Galician-Portuguese which has little Arabic influence and more relevant Celtic components. The official Spanish language, Castilian has 8% of Arabic in their inventory and the Islamic heritage is also quite prevalent in architecture, cuisine, music etc. The Spanish have endured the “Hispanic” stigmatisation from America for many decades too. It is something many find hurtful and I know that a lot of Spaniards try now to separate themselves from the Hispanic definition meaning, they are not brown and semi-illiterate Latin-Americans but a European, first world people. The Portuguese are traditionally racially unaware and were never confronted with justifying their origins in a racial way... there’s not one Portuguese race but a melting pot of ancient peoples who settled in Portugal. If you see the two pages and compare the scrutiny, you will notice something very “intriguing” again. A lot of the genetic studies quoted here have been carried out by either Spaniards or Spanish-friendly scholars. The “Moors” are avoided like the plague and the Visigoths gain a legendary importance which even Boris Johnson, the current UK prime minister noticed and made a programme about:

There’s no such sub-section as “Genetic History of the Iberian Peninsula” in the Spaniards page, contrasting with the Portuguese people page. Precisely because the Portuguese don’t have hang ups about their culture or genetics or language or racial qualification:

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
General news
- A training for mentors has been published. The training was first tried with the Czech community, and went well.
- Growth team features have been deployed to Hungarian, Ukrainian, and Armenian Wikipedias. If your community is enthusiastic about welcoming newcomers, we encourage you to contact us so that we can verify together whether your wiki is eligible. Then you can go through the checklist to start the process of configuring the features.
Productive edits from newcomer tasks
We deployed the basic workflow for newcomer tasks to our target wikis on November 20, and the early results are exciting.
Graph captions (top to bottom):

- About 1.5% of newcomers who visit their homepage complete the workflow and save a suggested edit. So far, this has amounted to over 450 edits, on all wikis, coming from both desktop and mobile users.
- When we look at the edits that newcomers make, we see that they are largely positive! We are pleased to see that this feature does not appear to encourage vandals.
- 75% of the edits are productive and unreverted.
- 95% of the edits appear to be in good faith.
- Most of the edits include copyedits and adding links, with some newcomers also adding content and references. Copyedits are suggested most strongly.
- Click here to learn more specifics about the results so far.
Topic matching deployed
The results from our user tests showed us that newcomers are likely to do more suggested edits if they can choose articles related to a topic that they're interested in, such as "science", "music", or "sports".
- On January 21, we deployed topic matching on our pilot wikis. Newcomers are now using it. We expect it to cause more newcomers to try suggested edits, and to keep making more of them.
- In the coming weeks, we will be making improvements to the accuracy of the algorithm used to topic matching, which is part of the ORES project.
Next steps for newcomer tasks
Because we are seeing positive results from newcomer tasks, the Growth team plans to concentrate our efforts on improving the workflow and encouraging more newcomers to use it.
- Guidance: next, we will be using the help panel to provide guidance to newcomers as they do suggested edits, and to prompt them to do another edit after completing their first one. In user tests for this feature, demo videos were one of the favorite features, and we will think about how these might be added.

Hello - You made some authoritative changes to the entry for Charles LEDGER Personally, I am trying to find the origin of the following statement, (both huguenot origin and 18th C immigration to England)
"Ledger belonged to a huguenot family that emigrated to England in the 18th century; "
and wondered if you might have any ideas?
The apparent reference "Australian Dictionary of Biography, Volume 5, MUP, 1974, pp 73-74. Retrieved 9 Sep 2009" is not actually any help
