Re: DYK: The Dead South

As per this nomination (where I was unable to address your questions directly), I'd like to address those questions here, if that would be okay.
First of all, I would very much appreciate some help with any reference irregularities you find. I thought I used to know how to add refs, but apparently, I've fogotten anything but adding the entire reference each time. I know there is a better way, but I couldn't figure it out.
Secondly, no - the band was never called "Mumford and Sons Evil Twin"; its something the band members refers to itself as.
Third, while the question is indeed the title of the ref, it is a question that the reviewer asks (and answers). As for further refefences for the albums, I have no doubt that they exist. Part of the DYK's purpose is to get editors and readers to visit the article and likely add content and other info.
Regarding the Earwig similarities, I cited the first instance of a quote or phrase. I was unsure whether to cite subsequent sentences within the same paragraph that came from the same source. I used references that reviewed each of the albums; I didn't find any negative reviews (in the interest of balance, I'd have added them), so i added what I could. I thought I was pretty careful in avoiding any OR or SYN by only noting what the sources said. I am presuming that others will add to and reshape into better prose the quotes from sources.
Lastly, I had hoped to use the hook as the name of the group is The Dead South, but they - unlike most bluegrass bands - are not from the (American) South. They're Canucks, every one of them. I guess an alternate hook could be the Mumford and Sons Evil trwins thing, but it feels weaker than the initial hook proposed. Thoughts? - Jack Sebastian (talk) 04:49, 28 December 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Jack Sebastian. I've fixed the reference issues. See this edit; looks like you had the same references multiple times. You only need to have them once, then use the name to cite the same thing again.

Thanks for rewording about the "Evil Twin" name.

As for your last point - like I said in the review, I'm fine with the hooks. It was only a suggestion. Thanks for considering.

Relating to the other points, it's about wording. Not worried about negative reviews or OR/SYN; I think you did a good job of finding references that discuss the band/albums. Thanks for your diligence, Jack Sebastian. I did a little work on the article. While some of the phrasing still seems like it should be reworked, I looked at a couple other articles - American Idiot and Dropkick Murphys, to be specific - and feel like the quotations and reviews are included in The Dead South in comparable ways. So I feel comfortable with the prose.

I would like to see a reference on the last paragraph in the lede, and on the first. I don't see any inline citations where the band members are listed, nor on the line, "Doyle, a noted solo and studio musician was hired to fill the vacancy left by Crawford." Update on my previous comments: this looks to me to be a blatant copyvio issue. Note the highlighting where Pearl Jam is mentioned. Citations are mandatory, and anything copied directly needs quotation marks. I reworded another example of what appeared to be really close paraphrasing. Yes, we can quote people properly. But articles should not be pieces of reference copied and pasted.

I've reworked some of the direct quotes into prose, but I'm having a little difficulty using Earwig. When I run an scan on the article, it isn't seeing the current (altered) version of the article. You shouldn't need to worry about revision ID. For reference, Wikipedia:Revision id explains it. Essentially, each revision has a unique number value that identifies it. @Jack Sebastian: I applaud you persevering. I would say you started an article that you should be happy with.

I want to make sure we uphold high standards, especially since the DYK articles are linked on the front page of our very high traffic site.

To give more background, I was burned with my first DYK, which was pulled from the front page because of concerns with sourcing.

The article now clears everything for copyvio concerns in my opinion, and you did a good job working on that. I really think the three inline references are all it needs. @ScratchMarshall: I get it. "Link rot" is an unfortunate reality. I got in the practice of checking that pages are archived in The Wayback Machine when I add them to articles (just paste the URL to search; if it's not already archived, you can have the crawler save it). Hi Elisa.rolle. I see on Talk:Arden Hilliard, WikiProject LGBT studies is mentioned, but the article does not explicitly mention his gender or sexual identity. Hilliard was part of the Hypocrytes, and they were mostly gay, and his friends, Powell, Waugh, Betjeman, Acton, were all gays or bisexuals. Given that there is not indeed a biography about him, I cannot write on the article that he was gay or bisexual, but given his friends, it's most likely. New Page Reviewer Newsletter

The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

• The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
• We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

• We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

• ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.

Kehinde Wiley Artistic Motifs Edit

Hi Paul, I'm responding to your reversion of an edit I made to Kehinde Wiley which you described as vandalism. This was a good faith edit on my part and I had no intention of vandalizing the article or including any false information. I simply wanted to mention a noteworthy motif of Wiley's work. What section of the article do you think would be best for this inclusion?

My two thoughts are: (1) can we really use the words "often" and "motif" if this is not confirmed by the sources? and (2) the placement of your edits was inappropriate because the Washington Post source on that line doesn't mention anything about that.

I really appreciate you following-up on this. How about we instead write a new sentence (i.e., after the existing sentence), citing all three of those sources. What about something like, "Wiley has used a sperm motif as symbolic of masculinity and gender." = paul2520 (talk) 16:09, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

I think it's still appropriate to use "motif," but perhaps not "often." My thinking is, a motif typically refers to a distinctive feature of an artistic composition. I think the sperm symbolism Wiley uses is definitely distinctive and indicative of his work.

teardrop tattoo edit

Hi Paul,

You edited the word 'his' to 'their' in the teardrop tattoo article however if you look at the reference, it states:

Homosexuality is also prevalent, as is rape of prisoners. In a bizarre practice, the victim of rape is tattooed with a tear drop below the eye by the offending party and his accomplices.

It is usually one person that is doing the tattooing and in a male prison it will be a he, therefore it will be 'his' accomplices. The accomplices of course would be holding down the prisoner being tattooed, not doing the tattooing; so they will not have accomplices hence it is 'his' not 'their' accomplices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.148.82.40 (talk) 04:11, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for reaching out. I had switched "his" to a singular they with the thought that this might not just be perpetrated by males. But you're right, the reference uses "his".

• WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

• Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

• A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules

• New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
• Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
• Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.

Editathons

• Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

• The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. Thank you for all of your help. I've made a few dozen articles and it never occurred to me to ready them for DYK. Now that I'm familiar with the process, it's a nice motivator for the future. The Growth Team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects. We will be starting with Wikipedias, but we hope these changes will benefit every community.

We are considering new features to build, that could retain new editors in mid-size Wikipedias. We will be testing new ideas in Czech and Korean Wikipedias, and then we'll talk to more communities (yours!) about adopting the ideas that work well.

We have posted the 8 ideas we are considering. We would really appreciate your thoughts and the thoughts from your community. Please share the ideas, and tell us what do you and your community think of those ideas before September 9.
