A question

Do you remember that conversation we had on IRC a while ago, about me improving on the Alden J. Blethen article? Well, I think that I finally have time to put some thought into writing it, but I have completely forgotten the entire conversation. :) If you have forgotten, I basically didn't really know where to start with writing it, and that kind of thing... So if you could dig up some halfway-decent advice, I would really appreciate it. Oh, and reply here, by the way. Hi878 (talk) 00:38, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Try making a draft copy in your userspace. If you just start writing there, you can get everything structured as you want without having to worry about the whole page at first. fetch·comms 00:51, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I knew that part. :) I meant that I'm not quite sure what the frame of the article would be, I at least somewhat know what I will put in it. Hi878 (talk) 01:02, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
What exactly do you mean by the frame of the article? fetch·comms 01:04, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, just... How it should be organized, I suppose. Sort of hard to describe. :) Or maybe I'm just afraid to write anything... Only kidding. :) Hi878 (talk) 01:17, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'd just start lumping together information in a draft. Like, anything about his early life goes in one paragraph, stuff about his career in another, and then when all the information is extracted, try to reformat it in the right order and then make it live. fetch·comms 01:31, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

I'm trying to make a Wikipedia page for a guy named Jeffrey Wisenbaugh. He's a TV personality and popular YouTuber. But you keep denying my submission due to "unreliable sources". Amoung the sources I've listed are Big Ten Network and State News. Both are well-known new sources. So how exactly are my sources unreliable? I mean, what kind of source do I need to get before you'll publish the page? The New York Times? It's not like I'm trying to make a page for myself, or for some unknown person. Jeffrey Wisenbaugh is well known in the internet community. Thanks.

BenjaminWoody (talk) 05:43, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Ideally, yes, because he also does not appear notable enough for inclusion on Wikipedia right now. Notability is established through the use of multiple reliable sources--and a New York Times article would be an example of that. (We never had an article on Shane Dawson until he appeared in the NYT, actually). For your sources, the first link takes me to MSU's homepage, the third doesn't seem to really mention him (and if it did, it does not constitute significant coverage. The other two are fine, but they still aren't major enough to make him notable. fetch·comms 18:44, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Copyright question

Is this a copyright problem? This is a diff between an AfC submission (declined as a copyvio of [1]) and a subsequent userspace draft: [2]. I would like you to help me compare the web site to the current draft. PleaseStand (talk) 19:33, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

The paragraph with

The years passed, and inevitably the number of GAR members diminished. In 1926, the two remaining GAR posts merged to become the Gorman-Culver Post #13. (6) The United Spanish War veterans began using the Hall: in 1954, the John McEwen Camp No. 6 of the United Spanish War Veterans made use of the hall to celebrate their 56th anniversary. But eventually, the Spanish War Veterans, too, dwindled in number.

is too close to the site. As is the last sentence, "Veterans' Memorial Hall is maintained by the St. Louis County Historical Society and the military service veterans from the Arrowhead region." Overall, it seems OK, but the user still needs to reword some parts. fetch·comms 19:46, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

Userpage renovation request

I was looking for someone I could ask to do this and you're a familiar name. (From User:Mono's talk page, I think) Anyway, I'm interested in having my userpage renovated a bit. Most of the info I want is on there, but if it could be made pretty and formatted better, I would love that! Here are my ideas so far:

  • I've been trying to play off the whole "Princess" thing in my name.
  • Matching the font on my userpage to my sig would be cool too.
  • I'm thinking a blue and green color scheme. See my sig for the general idea.
  • Some type of border to hold things together.

Now, here's the catch. I would like the same general color and design on my talk page. Could you do that? Really, none of it has to be fancy. If you don't have time right now or don't want to, no problem! PrincessofLlyr royal court 22:46, 4 June 2010 (UTC) (reply here is fine, it's on my watchlist now)

I'll see what I can muster up. Might take a bit, though. fetch·comms 22:53, 4 June 2010 (UTC)

It's protected because of constant disruption and vandalism. Please sign your posts correctly using ~~~~. Changing "names" is misleading and unnecessarily confusing. fetch·comms 02:15, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
I've had recent problems on this site, so I dont like to reveal my ip. Isn't there some kind "Bieber-vandal" page so that haters can criticize him there instead of on the talk page? - ElaineBenes 70.50.197.207 (talk) 17:45, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
All your edits to this and other pages are recorded under your IP in the page history, so good luck with that. If I were you, I'd stop complaining about the Bieber haters (I'm one of them) and actually get something done. fetch·comms 17:49, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Your AfD Nomination of Joy and Tom Studios

Would you mind revisiting this AfD and expanding your nomination reasons? "129 hits on Bing" is not a valid reason, in and of itself, for deletion. The circumstances under which an article can be deleted are set out at WP:DEL#REASON. You may have been intending to suggest the article fails WP:N by not having significant coverage in reliable independent sources. In that case you need to explicitly say that, then assert you've made good faith searches looking for such coverage which were unsuccessful. 129 hits on Bing (and why do you use Bing instead of Google?) tells us nothing about whether those hits are or are not significant coverage in reliable independent sources. Hi,

Don't know if you are bothered about this - it's mildly annoying; the whole point is, people cannot cope with all the verbage. But is it worth arguing over? Just change it back? I don't know; let me know. Chzz  ►  14:26, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

I'd raise a stink. :P Just because that page is now less-than-awesome. fetch·comms 14:41, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I think we should perhaps move it to a Wikipedia: namespace page, perhaps as an 'essay', and propose it as a guideline - what do you think?  Chzz  ►  15:46, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Note: In proposing it as guideline, let's emphasize the need to KEEP IT SIMPLE - the whole point, as I am sure you understand, is that it must stay as <1 screenfull, and be in abundantly clear, simple language. Chzz  ►  15:47, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Move into projectspace as essay, yes. Guideline, I like it, but I doubt many others will. Too BITEy would be an expected response. fetch·comms 15:57, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Citation tags removed without citations being added

I am a bit confused about your only brief question here. As I think you understood, I needed help because someone had removed several [citation needed] tags from a biography without adding any citations. I am sincerely sorry if I was wrong to use the {{help}} tag. What should I have done? SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:17, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

You should have tried to form a consensus about the issue on the talk page. See this page on these types of changes. fetch·comms 21:19, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
OK then, thanx! Am I to go by from now on that it is fine to remove any and all such tags without providing the requested sources? I honestly didn't think that was appropriate behavior.
I have addressed the issues again on the talk page now, and edited the article's section with this edit summary: citation tags for each and every DIFFERENT piece of unsourced gossip unknown to academic literature; plus a bit of unfluffing, language, Swenglish. SergeWoodzing (talk) 21:37, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean... the page just says that someone can make a change, it can be undone, and then discussed on the talk page. fetch·comms 21:43, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
Since you, Fetchcomms, criticized me for requesting {{help}} about a number of [citation needed] tags that had been removed, and then also replied here as you did, my specific question to you is this:
  • Is it generally OK for an editor to remove such tags from an article without provided the requested citations or a ny sources at all?
I hope that's clearer now. I would like very much to know your opinion, as I always willing to learn. R.S.V.P.! Cordially, SergeWoodzing (talk) 13:46, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Any editor may remove any tag from an article at their discretion. Whether it is correct or not is the issue that needs to be discussed if you disagree with the move. But there is nothing "against the rules", so to say, about removing a tag. fetch·comms 14:46, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
I was told once very sternly that any attempt to promote the use of unsourced material in a biography would be considered disruptive to the project, to WP, especially if requests for sourcing were *tampered with". I wish I could remember what administrator thus admonished me. Thanks for clearing that up! I will stop putting [citation needed] tags wherever I see that non-factual material is given as factual without being sourced. Thought I was being helpful. Why bother? SergeWoodzing (talk) 23:41, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Can we try to use some common sense here? That's like saying "my car will break down one day so why bother buying one at all?" Any unsourced material in a BLP must be removed immediately, no tags, just remove it. Any other case, you can obviously remove it, or add a citation needed tag on--I'm just saying that there's no rule prohibiting their removal. fetch·comms 23:47, 11 June 2010 (UTC)

Feedback - please help me out

Re. WP:FEED, new system; I really want to get this implemented ASAP, but the size of the current page has crept back up.

The demo isn't quite perfect, but to be honest, if we wait until it is, nothing will happen. We need to boldly implement it.

To do that, first of all, we need to clear things.

So, can you please help me by moving any and all feedback into the archive, and tell the users with a note, something like this one.

The move-over to the new method will be much easier if we clear things down.

I'm going to ask others for help, and try to get help with the transclusions stuff too.

Sorry this is a bit of a long message; I think it's important to sort this out, ASAP - and I need help with it.

Thanks,  Chzz  ►  03:43, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Professional wrestling in New Zealand

Hi, great job on the new article Professional wrestling in New Zealand - it's exactly what we need to satisfy coverage without having articles on non-notable promotions. A couple of (hopefully) constructive comments:

  1. The lead is supposed to summarise the article, yet it contains material which is not included and enlarged upon later in the article (e.g. the TV coverage of current promotions).
  2. If there are sources, I think we should highlight the small scale of current promotions a little more, e.g. all the wrestlers being part-timers, audience sizes (mentioned in Herald).
  3. On the Mat probably deserves a little more in-depth coverage - for most kiwis over 40, it's probably their only memory of wrestling.
  4. Of interest, wrestling was one of the handful of sports satirised in the humourous book "From N to Z" by C.V. Smith in 1947, 2nd edition 1949. I can't locate my copy, but it had a Gordon Minhinnick cartoon of a wrestling bout. He only died in 1992 - I wonder if fair use would qualify on this article?

dramatic (talk) 03:52, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

  1. will work on that when I have more Internet access
  2. will look for more sources on that
  3. will see if I can expand that
  4. sure, if it's discussed in the article. Will look to see if I can find more info about that.
An IP created the article, and I have no knowledge of wrestling at all, but I thought it looked good and I'm truing to learn while bring it up to GA level. Thanks for the suggestions! fetch·comms 18:11, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Vishay Intertechnology ‎

Hi and thanks for your time reviewing the Vishay Intertechnology article. I see that you removed a lot of the content i added. This content was requested on the article's talk page. Please can you advise why you removed? --Lindseyrose (talk) 08:41, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

It is useless and unencyclopedic material specifically disallowed per this page. Listing tons of things for the company also seems a tad promotional. fetch·comms 13:13, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

With regards to the product list you removed, it is technical information, not promotional information, and is of genuine interest to design engineers and other individuals who want to know, in detail, about Vishay’s product portfolio. This does not include any subjective information. As for the acquisition list, again, this is objective, factual information that is of genuine interest to individuals who wish to learn more about Vishay. It does not include any subjective information. Furthermore, as Vishay is a publicly traded company, the information needs to be made freely available to interested parties. Please can you consider reverting?? --Lindseyrose (talk) 08:43, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

The product list should not be included per this page, as I have said now several times. I don't make the guidelines, I follow them. The timeline part may be OK, but should be in a paragraph--we want to give more context (why it matters for Vishay to have this included) and reference every part of that paragraph. fetch·comms 12:08, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Just being objective info does not mean something is appropriate for Wikipedia. And Wikipedia is not for making info freely available-- we ONLY rely on already published information, so anything new that needs to be "made available" should be removed immediately. fetch·comms 12:11, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much for your contribution to my Rfa. I have made a comment about it at User talk:JamesBWatson#Your Request for Adminship which you are, of course, very welcome to read if you wish to. JamesBWatson (talk) 14:37, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Nadia Ali Embers Album

Hi fetchcomms, I was wondering if you could please do me a favour. I requested to upload the Album cover for Nadia Ali's solo album Embers last week but I haven't heard anything about it yet. Could you please have a look at and see if it can be uploaded. Thanks! Hassan514 (talk) 22:32, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Done, at File:Nadia embers finaljade.jpg. Sorry it took so long! fetch·comms 23:35, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
Thank you so much! Someone actually told me to upload a file, which is done at File:Nadia Ali Embers 2009.jpg. I guess that can be deleted now? Hassan514 (talk) 02:05, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Also added references. Though most of the information was taken from the album booklet which is not available online Hassan514 (talk) 02:45, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Added link to the iTunes page for the Album, from where the digital booklet containing all the information posted is available.

Updated TakaTuka

I have just added two new references in the TakaTuka. Please take a look. Thanks. ---- 98.158.123.172 (talk) 12:28, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Thus you are saying that those other sources back up everything in the entire article and that the sources from their own website are useless? Everything needs to be backed up and verified by independent sources. fetch·comms 21:58, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Tree shaping

I have been reading 'Treeshaping' for months as I am really interested in this artform. The discussion page seems like a war. What canI do about It. I didn't expect wikipeadia to be like this? 203.192.130.94 (talk) 13:34, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Well, firstly, please make a new section for a new topic--you posted right under someone else's question. Secondly, you just need to stay calm and keep a cool head. If you don't think Wikipedia is a nice place, then by all means, forget about it. But if you want to add to the discussion, just do so politely and in a constructive manner. The worst possible thing is to inflame the discussion (either by badgering others or trying to canvass). fetch·comms 13:50, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Editor Review

Hey Fletcher, Having seen other people's Editor Reviews, I was wondering, if it was time that I had one. My only thoughts are that I havn't been around so long, so people might not have much to say. Thanks, Rock drum (talk·contribs·guestbook) 17:02, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Editor review is one of those things that you can have as many as you want, whenever you want. Now's a perfectly fine time, especially if you are looking for some more guidance on other areas of work. fetch·comms 17:09, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
I've just made it here. Please review me. Rock drum (talk·contribs·guestbook) 17:27, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
I would prefer to let someone else do it first--often, if someone reviews a user, no one else does it afterward due to the backlog. I can always review you, but an empty ER page is open to other users as well. fetch·comms 17:33, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

It looks kinda old, but that's okay

In the midst of our epic argument, I'd like to give you this:

The Barnstar of Diligence
Even when it's you against many, you persist in arguing what you believe to be the best course of action for Wikipedia, all while keeping a cool head in the midst of a rather heated debate. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 00:30, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Mac FAR

I have switched the references of specific models over to {{cite mac}}, which includes link to Apple and a third party. I am willing to source or sandbox (remove with the hope of finding a source later) any piece of uncited information yo indicate, and I'm ready to do it now. Please keep in mind that a in a few places, half a paragraph is sourced to one reference; don't just go by the distribution of footnotes. Thanks, HereToHelp (talk to me) 04:12, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

I thought the original concerns with were the sources themselves (relying on Apple's website and questions about EveryMac's reliability). The one thing I don't like is having to do here is remove content because it is unsourced and possibly cause a decrease in the comprehensiveness of the article. Also, I'm not sure what advantages this cite mac template has--it is not in a "standard" format (like MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) nor does it contain information like the source page's title, publisher, date published, etc. Other issues:

Originally, the hardware architecture was so closely tied to the Mac OS operating system that it was impossible to boot an alternative operating system. The most common workaround, used even by Apple for A/UX, was to boot into Mac OS and then to hand over control to a program that took over the system and acted as a boot loader. This technique was no longer necessary with the introduction of Open Firmware-based PCI Macs, though it was formerly used for convenience on many Old World ROM systems due to bugs in the firmware implementation.[citation needed] Now, Mac hardware boots directly from Open Firmware or EFI, and Macs are no longer limited to running just the Mac OS X.

under "Hardware and software" subheading "Software", and

Apple directly sub-contracts hardware production to Asian original equipment manufacturers such as Asus, maintaining a high degree of control over the end product. By contrast, most other companies (including Microsoft) create software that can be run on hardware produced by a variety of third-parties, like Dell, HP/Compaq, and Lenovo. Consequently, the Macintosh buyer has comparably fewer options.

under "Hardware". "It is available only in Bluetooth, and the Mighty Mouse (re-branded as "Apple Mouse") is available with a cord." under the same heading is unsourced, and "Because Mac OS X is a UNIX like system, borrowing heavily from FreeBSD, many applications written for Linux or BSD run on Mac OS X, often using X11. Apple's less-common operating system means that a much smaller range of third-party software is available, but many popular applications such as Microsoft Office and Firefox are cross-platform and run natively." under software is as well. Quite a few ends-of-paragraphs under "1985 to 1989: Desktop publishing era" are unsourced (and if the ref is in the next paragraph, it should be doubled). Lastly, "Mac OS X’s share of the OS market increased from 7.31% in December 2007 to 9.63% in December 2008, which is a 32% increase in market share during 2008, compared to a 22% increase during 2007." under "Market share and user demographics" is unsourced--and these numbers definitely need to be attributed to somewhere. A major other pet peeve--please, please, go through all the existing citations and italicize titles and stuff. And add publishers/works! Also--citations need to be consistent--I see some "Apple" as publisher, and some "Apple Inc.."--go with the latter, and remove the period (template auto-adds one). Ref consistency needs a ton of work. fetch·comms 13:44, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
In 2007, Apple Computer Inc. became Apple Inc. so we can either use the name appropriate for when the reference was published, or (my preference) just say Apple. {{cite mac}} is a work in progress as far as formatting. Apple has last updated info for each article; everymac does not. I'm not ready to give up on the nomination yet but I certainly now understand your viewpoint of delist, then fix. Thank you. HereToHelp (talk to me) 13:52, 24 June 2010 (UTC)
My view on refs is that as much info should be added as possible--so dates if available, should be added. Apple or apple Inc--doesn't matter all that much as long as it is consistent throughout and with the dates. fetch·comms 15:21, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

article on the SpaceLiner

Hello, Thanks for reviewing the article. I was wondering why you deleted the picture and the table with vehicle data. Kind regards AvFspace

AvFspace (talk) 08:56, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Generally, a straight-up table is discouraged in favor of an infobox. However, this particular infobox, while standardized, do not have spaces for technical information (like height, etc.). I also removed the images as it is up for deletion. fetch·comms 13:27, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Boom-ba (Musical Instrument) - you rejected my article in error

You declined my article regarding the Boom-ba, saying that it is the same as a Bumbass. This is NOT the same instrument. Please do your research before dismissing my submission.

The space boy (talk) 02:35, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Please provide a verifiable source to back up your claim. My research states that a boom-ba is an alternative name for a bumbass. In addition, they have a similar design and I am inclined to call your boom-ba a variant of the bumbass, just as a pogo cello has the variants stumpf fiddle, pogo cello, etc.[4][5][6][7][8][9] So it is you who must do your research. Simply because your regional variant is important there does not mean it requires its own article, and the existing articles are fragmented about the same instrument. fetch·comms 13:16, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Woodall

Hey, I've left a question for you at Template talk:Did you know#Zachariah T. Woodall, but it's nothing that will stop it getting onto DYK, so don't panic. Best, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 23:45, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. Nice to have a dynamic IP doing something useful, I spend far too much time dealing with those who are, er, less cooperative, shall we say! It got me curious though, so I'll ask someone else when I can be bothered! :) HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 04:03, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Talk page stalker

What should you do if a talk page stalker gives someone an award? Should you give them the WikiJaguar award? Wayne Olajuwon (talk) 23:35, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't like talk page stalking, as I like to answer queries personally, so you can do whatever you wish. I would ignore such trivial awards, for doing nothing than watching a page, and instead write an article. fetch·comms 13:25, 28 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. J Milburn, Fox and The ed17
