Account Creation Improvement Project

Hello,

I have run across your user name several times now during my work with the Account Creation Improvement Project. I don't know how much you have followed the development of that project, so I'll direct you to this edit for some background. My question is, do you have time to make some of the designs better-looking? With your talents in writing MediaWiki pages with special looks, it seems that you would a very good person to help out. The primary thing now is making this page look better. Anything you can do to help is appreciated.

We have some mockups that I did. I am not a designer, by a long shot, so it looks really bad, but I hope that you can understand what we are trying to accomplish. As we cannot change the software (it takes too much tech support), we will have to work with html and css and possibly javascript to create the effect we are after. I am working with a guy who have started on a javascript form that we can use instead of the edit box solution I have on the page I linked to above. So what would be fantastic, would be if you could make the design, in MediaWiki, for the page. You don't have to bother with Step 1, but concentrate on making the other steps, including Step 4 (the resulting user page) as good looking as possible.
If at all possible, could we talk about this, perhaps on Skype, soon?

Sorry for not writing sooner, but I wanted to tell you that everyone that has seen your designs have commented very favorable on them. I do have one question: could you create the progress bar for the third step (the user page) as well? I have tried to adapt the second one, but I just can't seem to get the hang of it :-s

For the progress bar on the third step, I don't think it looks the best if saved directly on the user page, so what you could do is, in outreach:MediaWiki:Common.js, add &editintro=User%3AFetchcomms%2Fdraft%2Fei after the &action=submit. That way, the progress bar will show up as an editnotice so the user can see it, but it won't be saved onto the user page. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 17:09, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Some more CSS work

Hello,

After trying out the design on MediaWiki.org (something I probably should have done on the test wiki), I discovered that there is a problem with moving your design to English Wikipedia (namely here). What happens is that the box at the top pushes the form downward, while the box itself is empty. I tried taking out the end |} to see if I could get the box to continue, but it didn't work. So I asked Sertion. He said that either we would have to edit the Mediawiki code (which is not an option at this point), or we could give the existing frame around "Create account" rounded corners and a small shadow, and then put the text ("What would you like to be called on Wikipedia? Choose a user name and a password.") at the top of that, and move the form a little further down with CSS. He thought that you could do it. Is that possible?

Here is the Mediawiki code for the entire page. The page that guides where the box starts is named somewhere in that code. Can you help me find it and start working on CSS that would solve this problem?

Hm, OK, I think I understand what's happening. Personally, I think that revamping the entire account creation process would be better (simply because I don't like the how MediaWiki's default account creation system is set up), but as we can't do that right now, I'll see how to get around it. And here's the result. I didn't bother to enter the progress bar code to the test wiki (and it's at the bottom), and there is a loose "signupstart" at the top of the page that I don't know if it's from your code or something they have on the test wiki. Otherwise it seems to work very well! Good work.
Since everyone that has not changed their settings have Vector, and you cannot change your settings unless you have an account, you will already have an account if you have any other skin than Vector. But I guess that it could happen that someone wants another account for some reason. But don't concentrate on that until we this working, please. OK, the signupstart thing is from testwiki:MediaWiki:Signupstart. I don't know if that works on en-wiki (it doesn't on my personal wiki, but I'm running an older version of MediaWiki. so maybe that's why). In the case that we can use MediaWiki:Signupstart here, I would put the progress bar at the top, then. Also, I would add a sentence or two at the bottom then saying, "Don't use company names, don't use your real name if you don't want everyone seeing it", etc. But the screenshot looks good to me, so I think it works. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 21:20, 29 May 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, if there was the global sitenotice up, I think that means he wasn't logged out then—so there would be no captcha, and therefore no captcha stuff using the fancycaptcha mediawiki pages. Unhiding text

Hello,

After all you've done, I hesitate to ask, but you've proved so kind that I feel that I can at least ask.

In the ACP2 test, I have managed to hide too much of the title of the page. If you for instance look at MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP2-welcomecreation it doesn't say that you should pick the subject you are most interested in, since the code says display:none. Now, my question is if there is an easy way to write anything you want using that code, or if there is another way of solving that problem.

You can ask me anything, anytime :). Unfortunately, DISPLAYTITLE cannot change the title to anything other than the actual title (MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP2-welcomecreation)—you can only change how "MediaWiki:Customusertemplate-ACP2-welcomecreation" appears, like hiding certain letters or changing the color, size, etc. There is a way to do this using javascript, which is enabled on the French Wikipedia; I pasted the code here. But you'll want to ask one of the more techy people whether it would be OK to use that code here, because I don't know how much server load it would cause (although, the frwp is pretty big, so it can't be that bad). Also, I'm not sure if there's a way to only allow such code to work on certain pages, so you could ask at MediaWiki talk:Common.js or WP:VPT. Cheers, /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 19:51, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Deletion request

Hello Fetchcomms, could you please delete User:Alpha Quadrant/huggle.css, beginning in September I decided to use my alternate account for anti-vandalism and bulk AWB work, as it makes it easier for me to go over my semi-automated edits. Therefore I have no reason to have huggle enabled on my main account. I would have CSDed it, but because it is a .css page Template:Db-u1 won't work there. Request for a consultation in your area of expertise

Hey, Fetchcomms. You were highly recommended as an editor who designs great Wikipedia pages. I'm curious if you'd be interested in taking a look at the coding/design/development of an interactive help tutorial we're working on, The Wikipedia Adventure. It's going to be a web-based interactive tutorial/game that new editors can take/play in a realistic Wikipedia environment. Bascially, we've gotten together great people, developed a concept, written the script, and started working on images for the interface. Any input on either the coding or design side would be great. We have a few options here, and it partly depends on who is willing and able to make the game. The simplest option is to use images of Wikipedia and Flash. The more involved option, which is a bit more promising, is to use an actual mediawiki interface (though perhaps with limited navigation options). I've been thrown ideas including mediawiki extensions and using the mediawiki API, but this is an area where I need more feedback about implementation. Either way, the actual game would be web-based but likely not hosted directly on English Wikipedia. At least, the first generation game doesn't have the go-ahead for that, and it would probably be more complicated, as the game has some interactive elements, mock-articles, and simulated editor interaction. If we go the mediawiki, off-Wikipedia route, it would likely be javascript/ajax/html5 for the interactive components. (I'm not a coder, so that's the best overview I can give at this point).
Two interesting pages to get your creative juices flowing are the Script and the project page mock-up. We'll have some more shortly including screenshots of the interactive components. User:Sonia is working on the avatar graphics, but the rest of the game is wide-open. Let me know if you have anything in mind, or something you'd like to tinker with. OK, I don't know any flash, nor do I like flash, so I don't know how much help I'll be if that's the route that is ultimately picked. But you're right, it would be the most straightforward and likely best way to create a game-type thing. Using a real MediaWiki install would be the easiest to set up, I'm guessing, though probably difficult to manage (e.g., dealing with spam accounts and vandals). I can do MediaWiki coding, but not to the point of writing extensions, although I doubt creating a whole new extension is really necessary. I tried a few things, and if you want to go the MediaWiki route, I'm really not sure how it would work because the script covers so many different things. I'm not saying it's impossible, but some of the scripts needed would be beyond me. (I'm assuming you would want a low-maintenance game, where it's difficult for people to mess around and stuff so you don't have to keep track of every single player. Otherwise, it would be very easy, but also very annoying to maintain.) Flash would be the way to go, although the level of detail would likely make it a rather complicated deal. Then again, I have very little experience in flash (AKA: I've played flash games but I've never actually written one), so I'm just guessing at how one would write it there. tl;dr, I can help if you want to try MediaWiki, but you probably want a few other users, too. /ƒETCHCOMMS/ 23:16, 17 June 2011 (UTC)
The 'game' would not be an open environment where multiple accounts interact, it's all solo and all of the interaction is simulated. The editing is real but also quite simple and could be mocked up. I'm not even sure that it needs the MW parser, really, all it needs is simple translation from ~~~~ to the username and such. The rest of the edits need to be checked for accuracy but I think it's more likely they would just trigger a pre-loaded version.
If you want to give a try at the first level and see how it comes together, that would be awesome. We have some code reviewers, at least, on the Mediawiki side, if you wanted to give it a shot. Tom Morris and Dcoetzee are up for reviewing code, so your work would have some eyes in case you get stuck. I really don't know what the exact specs would be but Tom said he'd put together a code-map which might be helpful. I'll let you know when he's done that.
I think as for mediawiki integration, it would be a program which loads mediawiki but all of the interaction would be through javascript. That's my hunch as to how and keep it streamlined and limited. How would you feel about playing around with the first level, just as a demo? Are there specific steps that are tricky? Anything can be hacked for the mock-up, even if it's not the 'best' way to do it long term. The goal right now is proof of concept, really. Thanks again for looking into all of this. If everything is simulated, then it would be easier (more flexible, at least) to start with plain html rather than a CMS or other platform like MediaWiki, in my opinion. I'm not the best at javascript, unfortunately (most of what I know is from trial-and-error), so I don't know how to have all the interaction through js (do you mean that a player can't actually put anything they want in their edits? Could urls be manipulated to go to the edit screen and such? etc.). As for trying the first level, do you have a preferred place for me to put files? My idea was that there would be a 'right' edit which would be required to trigger the next step (else a 'try again' message). You'll see from the script that the editing options are actually quite limited even though they cover key skills. I don't have a toolserver account, but that's something I'll look into. I set up a github here https://github.com/Ocaasi/The-Wikipedia-Game. You can definitely add your code there, or really wherever is convenient for you. Are you okay with releasing any code to the project (I assume so, but I ask just to be sure). Really, however you want to try coding the first level as a mock-up is totally cool and i'm excited to see what you come up with. Anyway, if it helps sell the project to a more adept coding team it will be a great asset.
Yep, I was thinking the same kind of mechanism. I'm fine with publishing the any code I write under whatever license is most suitable for the game's development, and I'll get started on it. It's an existing daily show, used to be called "Ask One" but now it's called "Studio One" and just started airing this year and still currently on air & it's one of the many talk shows aired on Dubai One channel .. Hello, the reason the page was deleted was because someone raised this concern: "No evidence that this is a notable show. Fails WP:N and WP:RS". It is irrelevant what sort of show this series is, and it's irrelevant whether I've ever heard of it or not. What is relevant is Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, which the Studio One page did not appear to meet. A brief summary of these criteria may be found here. Good afternoon, regarding the image deleted-File:3496001266 86734f6a70.jpg, on the page User:Iscript/Fluid Equipment Development Company the phrase attached was written by myself. I obtained the picture from Flickr [1] and it stated it can be used if you give the author credit and I know I did because I spent some time trying to figure out which licensing would go with it, I used "cc-by-sa-3.0".

Also since I have not posted the page in progress on the Wiki site and I am still constructing it, working out the bugs, etc. why would items be subject to deletion? Also I changed my username from troberty to iscript to be a bit more private and have not quite figured out how to merge everything. Just thought I'd let you know in case you see the two. Hi Iscript, the Flickr page says the image is published under the copyright license Creative Commons Attribution-NoncCommercial 2.0. Wikipedia does not allow images published under this license, because we do not believe that "NonCommercial" is compatible with our goal of "free knowledge and information"; it is too restrictive. So CC-BY-SA 3.0 is not the correct license. For more information on this matter, please see the copyright FAQ.
Because the image does not meet our image inclusion policy, it had to be deleted immediately, regardless of the status of your entry-in-progress. This is because we want to minimize the amount of non-free material publicly available on our servers. If you are able to convince the Flickr user to change the copyright license of the picture to either CC-BY-SA or CC-BY (not CC-BY-NC or CC-BY-ND), then do feel free to re-upload the image under the correct license.
Also, you changed your username to Iscript, but are still using the Troberty account. If you want to maintain some level of privacy, you'll have to log in with "Iscript", not "Troberty". If this isn't working, please explain the situation at this page and hopefully someone will be able to figure it out; username changes do not always work as expected.

Hello again. I could use your help. I was humming along and created a disambiguation page for FEDCO and moved Fedco to Federal Employees' Distributing Company. After I learned I did it the wrong way (copy and paste) and created something I cannot fix - 2 pages with the same content. My intention was to remove Fedco since I transferred all information to Federal Employees' Distributing Company but realize the history will be lost, I should have used the move feature. Interesting, I just read about the collaboration in The Atlantic this morning. I don't have time currently (or in the near future, for that matter) to commit to a WikiProject, but I am interested in the "Today's Document" challenge. Do you happen to have more information on where the future/planned documents can be found? I wasn't sure if the "index forthcoming" meant that the list is not yet public or if it just hasn't yet been put on Wikipedia. On a side note, I'm really glad that we were able to obtain all those Ansel Adams photos; do you know if any of them were in color? Those seem to be quite rare. Thanks for reminding me. I had posted a quick and dirty index a little while ago. I have updated the language with a link to the page. You can actually get to all of the pages by just clicking the "Tomorrow's document" over and over again, as they are all posted for the whole year already, so I just had to compile them all in one place to make it less of a chore to peruse them. That project can really be run almost entirely independently of NARA and me. We just need to be notified of any successes so we can update our pages to refer to them. I would love for someone(s) to take charge of the page, declare themselves coordinator, clerk, or whatever they like, and really get it up and running. So far I haven't really even been able to devote a lot of time to publicizing it.

The Ansel Adams photos from this set were all in black and white. You can see them at commons:Category:2011 Ansel Adams donation from U.S. National Archives (the TIFF master files aren't up yet, but those are the high-resolution JPEG versions). If they interest you, it would be great to see someone give them some love. Something as simple as finding any old low-quality versions already on Wikipedia from before this donation and replacing them in articles would be useful, as well as categorizing and adding them to articles. In general, almost none of the images available on the web are in the highest resolution (scan-quality) and definitely none of them are available as the TIFF master scan files which I have been trying to get on Commons as well. Essay format

Again on 'modern' page formats: Is there, as far as you know, any rule that prevents essays in Wikipedia project space from being HTML formatted as for example user essays here? FWIW I think your design was perfect and it's the kind of thing we need a lot more of. The only problem I see is possible download time for the extra HTML and/or CSS; storage space is not an issue.
