How do you vandalize a page? What does that mean? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Afafk (talkcontribs) 00:58, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

Adoption offer

Greetings Fetchcomms/Archive 1, I see you're up for adoption, and I'm in the market. If ever you need advice or answers, just ask me -- any question, any time. I'd like to help however I can. Happy editing - Draeco (talk) 17:55, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

As for your userboxes, I don't know. Your first bet is to place the template {{helpme}} at the top of this talk page, and hopefully somebody with userbox knowledge will respond. Failing that, I would ask at the Help desk, but be warned that some "helpers" there might be snappy about userboxes there; many don't see it as a legitimate enterprise on Wikipedia. - Draeco (talk) 00:58, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
As for talk etiquitte, there's no good answer. Different people prefer it different ways. Personally, I prefer posting on the other's talk page, back-and-forth, so that the user is notified each time and more likely to notice (for example, I don't watch your talk page habitually). The back-and-forth can make it hard for any third party to follow the conversation, though, so I'll keep the conversation in one place when it's a topic that's likely to interest others. - Draeco (talk) 00:58, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Any time, comrade. Reward me by staying active on WP. - Draeco (talk) 01:27, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
WP:ESSAYS has the official policy. Basically, it doesn't matter. If you don't want others to modify it, leave it in your userspace. - Draeco (talk) 03:39, 12 October 2009 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Red link is your guideline. Basically, leave red links as long as they're likely to ever have an article, or even create that article yourself if you're able. As for where to post questions, there's no rule. I prefer to keep similar comments under the same heading (as I'm doing with all your adoption questions) but making new sections each time is fine as well. If your post is likely to spark significant commentary, make a new section. It basically boils down to readability. - Draeco (talk) 13:24, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
WP:SPELL has spell-checking advice (spellcheckers are built into some browsers and WP tools, or you can cut& paste every edit into Microsoft Word or somesuch, though that's cumbersome because all the wiki markup will make a wash of red and green). WP:MOS has general style/format/grammar guidelines, but it's best for those who are already good at grammar, but unfamiliar with Wikipedia's specific preferences. If it's a matter of simple poor English, that's tough. The {{copyedit}} template is designed to handle this, but has a backlog of thousands of pages. You can ask questions at the Language ref desk but they'll get annoyed if you badger them with constant gruntwork. You can double-check the user's contributions personally through their "my contributions" link, but it's a chore.- Draeco (talk) 02:52, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Hm, yes that would be the best way to start, but be constructive and don't bite the newbs. - Draeco (talk) 03:26, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
In general, posting civilly on a user's talk page is the best first step to addressing any issue. You'll rarely go wrong. - Draeco (talk) 03:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Sadly I've noticed a trend that WP editors seem to be getting more prickly and confrontational than in the early days. - Draeco (talk) 03:37, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Sorry I just saw your previous message. Revert = Undo. Rollback is an admin-only tool that has automated features but is still done by humans. As for how to do an AfD, it simply requires a lot of reading. The basic procedure is as WP:AFDHOWTO, but understanding all the procedures and criteria has a learning curve. - Draeco (talk) 03:29, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
Yeah AfD has become a very dense bureaucracy. I think it's bad for all of Wikipedia, but don't get me started. - Draeco (talk) 03:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC)
There is no graduation process. If you like, consider yourself graduated. But I still remain available for questions any time. Cheers - Draeco (talk) 02:12, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Your placement of advert warning tags

If you could explain what language you find to be WP:SOAP in the articles HA'Aki and Jeu that you tagged as advertising, I'd be happy to try to address it. These are both stub articles that have minimal text on the films: key credits, short descriptions, and major awards won, the latter of which is an important part of establishing notability per Wikipedia:Notability (films), which lists as criteria "a major award for excellence in some aspect of filmmaking." thanks, --Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:03, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your speedy reply re the expand template below. Could you get back to me about these warning tags as well? thanks, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:06, 3 November 2009 (UTC)
You made some good points, I'll pare down and Wikify the language a little, thanks. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 02:16, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Your placement of expand tags on stub articles

You also should not be adding expand tags to articles that are already categorized as stubs, per Template:Expand, as you did here, here and perhaps elsewhere. It's just unnecessary. A stub is by very definition in need of expansion. Use the expand tag only on articles that are not stubs, but still in need of expansion. --Shawn in Montreal (talk) 01:03, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Good hunting

Haha, I think you beat me to more reverts than I beat you to. What I really need is the rollback tool, how long do you think I need to be around before they'll give it to me?Cathardic (talk) 20:22, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!

Much appreciated. Me, I'm just wiling away the afternoon. Huggle is going all the work! --JohnnyB256 (talk) 21:17, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Well, you know Huggle is fast but sometimes there is a lag. I just warned and reverted some user who made a good edit because the edit in front of me was not the live edit! That happens.--JohnnyB256 (talk) 21:25, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Seems to be a larger than usual amount of vandalism today. School's out? Since I started using Huggle I've noticed not only how rife vandalism is on Wikipedia, but also how horrid some of the articles are that I stumble onto. Articles on the most trivial, narrow, and weirdest possible subjects. I think I have to stop before my eyes glaze over! --JohnnyB256 (talk) 22:38, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

I hate to admit it, but some of the vandalism is genuinely funny. Somebody even vandalized my user page humorously, something about being in my mother's basement for 17 years (it's been 15 years, to be exact). --JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:23, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

I have to admit I thought this[1] was funny. A BLP too! Shame on me.--JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:30, 7 November 2009 (UTC)
Here's a shocker: I googled that phony disease he put in there and there was only one hit, which was the vandalism! It got on Google after being there a millisecond! I swear to God. It just shows how important this vandalism patrolling is. Oh, this one was funny too [2]. I felt like writing back, "what's your excuse?"--JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:36, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Kane Waselenchuk article

As you've noticed, someone keeps deleting a paragraph - citing a 2 year suspension from competitive racquetball - from the Kane Waselenchuk article that I originally wrote. My user page was even changed by deleting a reference to that article as one of those that I originated. Can anything be done to stop this deletion occurring? (other than simply "undoing" it each time). Any advice/thoughts on this appreciated. Trb333 (talk) 17:18, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

To welcome users faster, you can just add this code into your monobook.js, or your vector.js if you are using the new beta version of this site:

band hero list

I've undone the splitout of the soundtrack for Band Hero. While I know the other games have it, in getting all the GH articles up to par for the Guitar Hero featured topic, there is concern that splitting soundtracks out just for purposes of doing so when the article is short enough is not a good thing. Thus, Smash Hits has its soundtrack in the article on the game (as there's no development info) while GH5 clearly needs a separate list due to the new gameplay additions and the like. Band Hero, as far as I've seen in sources, is not discussed much in development, and the gameplay is mostly the same as GH5 , so there's no larger body of text that will be added outside of the reception section, so the lists are fine in the article. If, when I get this to GA/FA and they complain about the size, then it makes sense to move it. --MASEM (t) 05:18, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi, you have removed links I entered on Darwin Northern Territory, these links are very relevant to the site and relate to the MacRobertson Air Race of October 1934 that used Darwin as a control point. The Race is mentioned in the site as an important part of its history. I would therefore suggest that my links are acceptable under Wikipedia rules. CSD

Hi Fetchcomms! while patrolling newpages, I stumbled upon Help with algebra. This article clearly doesn't meet the criteria for inclusion, it is in start violation of WP:HOWTO. You probably noticed that too during newpagepatrol, and tagged it for speedy deletion. The thing is though, you tagged it as blatant vandlism and a hoax, and that it is certainly not. I would like to invite you to be more careful with tagging articles for deletion, also thinking on how it welcomes our newcomers. Together with the other items on your talk page, it seems you may be a bit too over-enthausiatic when it comes to tagging articles for deletion. As a rule of thumb, use speedy deletion tags if and only if the article you are reading should be deleted RIGHT NOW. To enforce this, the criteria for speedy deletion are really quite narrow. That is intentional, so that articles that don't need such urgent deletion, can't be deleted under CSD. It's a good thing to always stop and think if it really meets the CSD, and pick the right criterium. In all other cases, it's better to use either PROD or AfD. Let me know if you think I am. or am not making sense. Happy editing! Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 16:20, 16 November 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Cloud Architecture Framework (CAF)

The article Cloud Architecture Framework (CAF) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Delete redirect to userfied article.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the Proposed Deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The Speedy Deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and Articles for Deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.  fetchcomms 00:16, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Prod v. Speedy

Hi. Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for helping cleanup. Your efforts are appreciated.

May I suggest that in the future if you encounter an article like Civilians operating against an occupying power that does not have any encyclopedia content, you nominate it for speedy deletion rather than proposed deletion. You can do this by adding the template {{db-nocontent}} to it.

CSD of Authonomy

Hi. Please do try to give articles a little bit more of a chance before speedying. You appear to have speedied Authonomy within a second of its creation and I don't think that's helpful in this case, as the article creator points out at Talk:Authonomy. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 20:45, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

Here's my advice: speedying is only advisable if something is blatantly deletable. Here was an article on a self-publishing website owned by publisher Harper Collins, being created by an admin, with lots of references out there. A bit of checking on your part would have been advisable. Again, you seemed to have applied the speedy tag one second after the article was created, so you couldn't have checked. This isn't a race to be the first to delete. Just take your time, do some WP:BEFORE work. I see your work has been largely focused on deleting articles and fighting vandalism, which is great, but you might want to try creating articles, as well. But that's up to you. best, Shawn in Montreal (talk) 23:47, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

William Adams (author)

Exactly what is the problem with the inline references to the Dictionary of National Biography, found at the end of every paragraph of the article? What additional citations are you looking for? Have you even lifted your finger to check the article against the DNB, or are you just firing from the hip? --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:27, 17 November 2009 (UTC)

{{refimprove}} is an inappropriate tag for the purpose you used it for. The citation used verifies the text in the article; additional citations are not required. You probably wanted {{One source}}. However I'd read carefully the purpose of that template - it uses language such as "accuracy or neutrality may be suspect". In my view, it would only be appropriate to use it if you thought something about the article was dodgy. If it is merely that you want another source because you think that's a generally good thing, I'm afraid the banner you leave on the article will be little more than clutter, with about zero chance of getting anyone to improve the article. Put another way, there are very much better ways of improving wikipedia than drive-by tagging. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:38, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
You'll understand there are two camps with respect to tagging. I'm in the other one. There is a but more on him in the Oxford DNB, which is about 114 years more modern than the DNB, and if I was less lazy, I'd update the article from that It wouldn't add much except his interaction with Elizabeth Sewell, but as you see, she hasn't yet achieved a wikipedia placing. Clearly you are right to think that a second source would improve it; I merely question whether a tag is the best way to get work done - and I think the ordinary user would prefer to get right into the article without having to check out the banner. YMMV. --Tagishsimon (talk) 23:57, 17 November 2009 (UTC)
YMMV. You dealt with my snappiness very well; well done on that, and apologies. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:13, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Houston's Rockville

A tag has been placed on Houston's Rockville requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you.  fetchcomms 03:45, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

authonomy

Hi - I was a little surprised to see that you had speedied this article. This one seems fairly clear notability to me; perhaps in the future you might check with the article author if you are unclear? We should probably consider thinking of this as an opportunity for education. If an article hangs around a little when it is in doubt, that is okay. I would rather have that than to have a productive editor driven away by a speedy that is too speedy. You might also be aware that there is a discussion about this at the Wikimedia Foundation strategic planning website. - Philippe 19:25, 18 November 2009 (UTC)

OK, let's just be careful about it going forward. One of my grave concerns is that we may have an environmental that's anti-wiki; that is, where policies and rules are being treasured over valid and appropriate contributions. Anything you can do to help combat that (by making sure that people understand WHY their article is being deleted, etc) is a step in the right direction. Thanks! - Philippe 16:30, 19 November 2009 (UTC)
There's no deadline. There's very rarely a harm to having a questionable or even bad article up for a day or two while things get sorted. You're right, it's frustrating, but when you keep your eye on the ball it's not that big a deal. Keep the big picture in mind... the long term damage of losing a potentially good contributor is MUCH greater than having an iffy article up for 24 hours while we sort things. :) I appreciate the work you're doing. Thanks for it. - Philippe 10:03, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Paul-André Fortier

Hello Fetchcomms, and thanks for your work patrolling new changes. I am just informing you that I declined the speedy deletion of Paul-André Fortier - a page you tagged - because: The article has been expanded since you tagged it. I suspect it may be copyvio, but otherwise it is no longer a speedy candidate. Please review the criteria for speedy deletion before tagging further pages. If you have any questions or problems, please let me know. JohnCD (talk) 22:08, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Please be more careful in how you use G12 in the future. Shawn in Montreal (talk) 22:41, 19 November 2009 (UTC)

Hello,

Thanks for your response regarding Said Nursi page. You're right, I've also checked Isaac Newton. It's very interesting coincidence :) Your suggestion is better than the previous one. Because, in the previous one, when somebody reads the first sentence, it is understand that Said Nursi is only the author for Kurdish origin. If we say Isaac Newton is a scientist of English origin, it doesn't make sense to us. It was the same at Said Nursi page. You've been loved by IShadowed

Hey there! IShadowed has loved you by placing a heart icon in the top-right corner of your userpage. Don't worry, it's not vandalism, but simply a small way to spread the WikiLove. If you don't really like it, feel free to revert it and make it go away, and no hard feelings; after all, it's just a small token of appreciation. If you like it, just add your name here, but again, there's no need to feel upset if you don't. Love and best wishes,  IShadowed  ✰  03:45, 21 November 2009 (UTC)

Re:Post new comment box

Hello. The box is called an InputBox. The syntax is fairly simple; you can view the source of my menu if you would like (though please do not make any edits to it). I put it there to reduce the number of unsigned, untitled and misplaced comments (including one which was posted at the top of my talk page). Intelligentsium 16:42, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Kevin florimonte

Just a heads up: The creator of Kevin florimonte blanked the page, implicitly requesting deletion and allowing speedy deletion per WP:CSD#G7. When that happens, don't revert, as you did, but tag the page with {{db-g7}}. Otherwise, keep up the good work! A Stop at Willoughby (talk) 22:26, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Bango Art Footnote mistake, please help

Yes thank you as you can see I have been adding footnotes to an article about Artist Sean Corcoran. Could you help me. Everything was fine until I suddenly lost all visible References at the bottom. I do not know why and a Cite Error has come up that I do not understand and now you have put me back to square one after I have spent a lot of time doing my best. Please help, Bango Art...

Swine Flu H1N1, and the best most relevant information we can find?

Fetchcomms,

Unlike SARS or West Nile which struck me as mainly hype, H1N1 strikes me as potentially very serious indeed , and I have worked on this issue for the last six months. I have been frequently stymied by the overly formal style of wiki . . . I don't think we're giving parents our best work at all, and parents would be our most demanding readers. "Students writing papers" are likely to be among our least demanding readers, anything written in formal style's going to be acceptable whether it has glaring omissions or not.

I would ask you to consider this commitment: if I can demonstrate to a reasonable degree, civil standard, more likely than not, 51%, that quoting excerpts from WHO, in fact quoting rather long excerpts from WHO is allowable under fair use, can I count on you to welcome experiments in less formal style and less standing between the reader and the information?

I also want to look at news articles, for example:

Report Finds Swine Flu Has Killed 36 Children, New York Times, DENISE GRADY, September 3, 2009:
“ . . . In children without chronic health problems, it is a warning sign if they seem to recover from the flu but then relapse with a high fever, Dr. Frieden said. The relapse may be bacterial pneumonia, which must be treated with antibiotics. . . . ”

That's written in lively style. The only thing I would be doing is sanding it down. I would not be doing parents, or anyone else, a favor.

The hard part of it is that this is only 30% of it. The other 70% of severe cases is direct viral pneumonia. And that pattern is not as obvious, but we still need to talk about it, with the best information we can find. The topic is hard enough as it is.

Would you in fact be willing to take a good long look at fair use with me?

And copyright for the above NYTimes article? Well, we're doing it for education purposes. It's 41 words out of 609. And "nature of copyrighted work," another part of the four-part balancing test, it's from the New York Times, which does sell subscriptions, but it's way back from the beginning of September. We have not scooped them. If anything, if anything it seems to me that we have promoted their writer Denise Grady.

But there would be longer excerpts, shorter time horizons. And health articles probably do have a longer shelf life than pop culture articles.

Cool Nerd (talk) 00:25, 24 November 2009 (UTC) (reposted on my talk page)

Well, if wikipedia has a policy, that completely ends all rational discussion. I mean, the original founders of wiki were like Moses coming down from the mountain with stone tablets . . .
Actually, very ordinary individuals, just like you and I. As I understand it, wikipedia started with only two articles because the busy people the founder (Jimbo?) tried to assign articles to were not getting around to it. So, he opened it up. I'm sure he/we didn't anticipate the onslaught of pop culture articles, but we adapted. And we might need to adapt to an ongoing serious health situation. And I'm sure ol' Jimbo puts on his pants one leg at a time just like you and I.
Okay, so they is a wiki article on Janet Wood informing us that she's from Speedway, Indiana, etc, etc. Not the actress Joyce DeWitt, but the character Janet Wood. A whole article. (and for a really good laugh, check out the discussion page of 2009 flu pandemic.) Point is, all this, and your going to begrudge me a good healthy, roboust, substantial discussion of pneumonia ? ?
Clinical features of severe cases of pandemic influenza, WHO, Oct. 16, 2009: " . . . In severe cases, patients generally begin to deteriorate around 3 to 5 days after symptom onset. Deterioration is rapid, with many patients progressing to respiratory failure within 24 hours, requiring immediate admission to an intensive care unit. Upon admission, most patients need immediate respiratory support with mechanical ventilation. However, some patients do not respond well to conventional ventilatory support, further complicating the treatment. . . . "
And I'm going to improve it by rewriting it? For starters, I am not a doctor. Besides, this was the public statement of a big Oct. 14-16 conference WHO held at the headquarters of the American Health Organization in Washington, DC. "Findings and experiences were presented by around 100 clinicians, scientists, and public health professionals from the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Oceania." Pretty big proceedings, and I'm going to rewrite it. I suspect it's a careful, measured statement. I'm likely to just louse it up.
So we can't cut and paste. We have to rewrite . . . so that we can practice our school skills of buffing and polishing? What if we just skip all this. Hey, you want to give me a good grade, you can give me a good grade and I'll graciously accept it.
There's a time to really take your time, maybe a traditional encyclopedic article on Voltaire, and really get it right and really pay attention to the writing (and the good news is that all writing develops transferrable skills, even if one is stuck in the most corporate of environments). And then there's a time to go fast.
In all seriousness, if we really do our best intellectual work and play our best game, we can maybe save several dozen lives. We should take that possibility very seriously. Cool Nerd (talk) 01:49, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the revision of the Helen Svedin article

Fair enough. I will try to find some kind of proof of the birthdate. I suppose the current birthdate, October 22nd 1976, was added to the article before proof was needed.

Isn't it? Here's the irony: vandals think, oh boy, I really am annoying these people. What they don't know is that all they are doing is giving people an addictive fun thing to do in their spare time. I mean, one mouse click is all you need, while they're the ones pecking away, wasting their time.--JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:19, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, I don't really know why somebody would vandalize an article, knowing it will be there for one second. I guess the reason is that there are times when the vandalism is there for weeks. --JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

By the way, ever notice how sexually obsessed they are? Tells you something about them. --JohnnyB256 (talk) 00:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

Removal of PROD from Ugawood

Hello Fetchcomms, this is an automated message from SDPatrolBot to inform you the PROD template you added to Ugawood has been removed. It was removed by Phil Bridger with the following edit summary 'contest prod - this is perfectly capable of encyclopedic expansion'. Please consider discussing your concerns with Phil Bridger before pursuing deletion further yourself. If you still think the article should be deleted after communicating with the 'dePRODer,' you may want to send the article to AfD for community discussion. Vector appearance

Please join my discussion (I do not understand what that is all for). Q0k (~~ ?) 09:09, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

No, thank you. I simply like this design and find it fin for my personal use. I think the "classic" design does not represent Wikipedia as what it is: an up-to-date online encyclopedia, not a bland, plain interface. We must move ahead, not stay in the past. If other popular sites looked like this, people would never go there. It's just plain boring. The vector skin gives the interface a nice look. -- fetchcomms 18:42, 28 November 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Q0k (talkcontribs)

Q0k, you can pick whichever style you like in the preferences. I don't see what all the fuss is about. We should have all styles available for everyone.-- fetchcomms 23:37, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Other than for commons images, use the best-resolution image you have. Oh, and categorize it. BTW, no harm in having both images on the commons if they are distinctly different visually. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 00:23, 29 November 2009 (UTC)
