General Average

what is your interest in the subject page ? what are you editing ? The entry is poorly constructed and misleading. pmh — Preceding unsigned comment added by Howellpm (talkcontribs) 15:34, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

I don't have any particular interest in that page; as far as I know, my only edit was to clean up a test edit someone made. If you have improvements to make, feel free to make them, or suggest them on the talk page, whichever you prefer. 28bytes (talk) 18:35, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

Noted , thanks for the explanation. Having regard to wholesale replacement of the 'stub' that has taken place over the years perhaps the best option would be to start again ! The latest 'entry', besides error of fact, appears to be a news article about a single casualty submitted by Alexchris - resident of Taiwan. This is not the evolution I had expected 6 years ago. lol pmh pmh (talk) 17:16, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

Closure

This is merely a suggestion, but I'd like to suggest that you might want to separate your personal feelings from the assessing of the consensus. Both can obviously be stated, but intermixed like that could be confusing. Maybe split into separate paragraphs/blocks of text? - jc37 20:05, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure if my prose skills are up to the task of compartmentalizing my thoughts like that, but I will take another look and see if there's a way to do so. 28bytes (talk) 20:18, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
I think that Jc37's point is a good one, but I came here to congratulate you on separating out the question of the existence of the category page from the existence of the category links on user pages. That was, I think, a helpful inisght which allowed a closure that met a lot of the concerns of both sides of the debate.
I have maintained a set of category redlinks on my userpage for years, without objection apart from a brief moment when somebody foolishly decided to turn one of those links blue. However, it didn't occur to me that could be solution in this case. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:29, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
A decent close. Why the redlink idea did not occur to others (per the above) surprises me - it is, after all, what I did at the outset and I have noted as much. Also at the outset, I explained that turning it blue would only lead to trouble. It is rare that I demonstrate such prescience! - Sitush (talk) 06:24, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks both. Hopefully both sides can live with the result. 28bytes (talk) 16:22, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
Hey, thank you from me as well. As one who respects you muchly as an admin and for the fabulous 28bot, who gives me much useful work to do; accolades for an admirable and balanced close. I shall wear my redlinked category with pride on my user page. Nice, nice, nice. Fylbecatulous talk 17:23, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

The talk page

Hi 28bytes. Is this closure section about the category?

Thanks for closing Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2012_October_31#Wikipedians_who_are_not_a_wikipedian. If you agree that it is appropriate, would you undelete Category talk:Wikipedians who are not a Wikipedian and move it to Wikipedia talk:Wikipedians who are not a Wikipedian. I recall the little bit of talk page post to be equally relevant there.

The notion that the comunity is accepting of protest categories if they are redlinked is curious and interesting. I believe that it has actually been true for a long time. It is possible to search for non-empty red-link categories? If the category is function, even red-linked, is it necessarily inappropriate for there to be a talk page? --SmokeyJoe (talk) 22:50, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi SmokeyJoe. I've restored and moved the talk page as requested; I agree, that seems like a good place for it. As for searching, I'm not sure how you'd go about it. Deleted pages aren't returned in Wikipedia searches, and they wouldn't show up in Google searches either since they're nonindex'ed. 28bytes (talk) 23:03, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

That talk page was for people commenting on the category. I'm not sure about the wisdom of moving it to be the talk page of an essay, that those individuals might not be aware exists. It's a bit like refactoring their comments into a different context - and may be confusing for anyone looking later. It isn't a big deal, but I'm really unsure why this is being requested, or on what basis you are granting it. It's rather without precedent to preserve the talk page page of a deleted page, and utterly without precedent to make it the talk page of a separate essay. As I say, perhaps not much harm, but it there a counterbalancing upside? I'm not going to push the issue, but just some thoughts.--Scott Mac 23:09, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Moving a talk page like this has been done in the past. As long as there is a note at the top noting the move (with a timestamp), there shouldn't be much in the way of confusion. - jc37 23:11, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
OK, but still leaves the "but why?" question.--Scott Mac 23:28, 8 November 2012 (UTC)2nd thoughts, forget it, who cares?--Scott Mac 23:39, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi Scott. In the name of "transparency", and being able to say "there is nothing hidden", there will be no case to say "conspiracy", "admin oppression" etc. Anything new will need to stand on its own merit. I think the talk page move is appropriate because most would seem to think that the whole thing belonged on the essay page to start with. --SmokeyJoe (talk) 23:55, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
OK, can't pretend I understand that logic. But if it helps stop people doing their irrational screaming bit, that's good. Anyway, I've decided I'm going to add the whole matter, and all related sub-topics, to Category:Things I don't care about. Probably long-overdue.--Scott Mac 00:01, 9 November 2012 (UTC)
That's a good category to put it in, probably. 28bytes (talk) 16:22, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

  • your preferred email address for a JSTOR account

The above information will be given to JSTOR to provide you with your account, but will otherwise remain private. Please do so by November 30th or drop me a message to say you don't want/need an account any longer. You are welcome to nominate yourself there, but respectfully, <500 edits is probably not sufficient enough experience for you to be appointed a sysop. Question

Hi 28bytes. As the closing admin at the ANI concerning the voluntary talk page ban of North8000 can i get your opinion on his WP:Soapbox moving to User talk:HiLo48. I don't want to influence anything, nor do i wish to revisit ANI any time soon, but this is less than a week (by my recollection) and it defeats the object of the entire thing. Just wanting your opinion is all. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 14:06, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Well, you can't willingly engaging in a robust discussion about the topic with him and then ask that he be sanctioned for participating in it. That would be uncomfortably close to baiting, don't you think? Besides, I'm sure HiLo48 is capable of telling him to disengage from the user talk page, although it appears North already has. 28bytes (talk) 16:02, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Fair point. I didn't invite North to that page but i see your point there. Thanks for the clarification and have a nice day/evening Jenova20 (email) 16:30, 29 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks. You too. 28bytes (talk) 16:32, 29 November 2012 (UTC)

Admin help?

Could you move Category:Wikipedia requested photographs of mountains in the United Kingdom to Category: ..... in the British Isles. Apparently I don't have that permission. Thanks :) --Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:31, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Unfortunately due to a limitation of the MediaWiki software we can't move categories at all... you need to make a request at WP:CFD (and moving anything to or from "British Isles" tends to stir up a hornet's nest, so it's just as well that a move request would need to be filed there instead of done unilaterally by a single admin.) 28bytes (talk) 21:35, 6 December 2012 (UTC)
Oh ok thanks I'll do that ... it was because it should be added to an established category with "British and Irish" in it.--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 21:39, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Re:my subpage

How do you feel it should be organized then, so it doesn't go into "dox" territory? I've kept it to pretty much the bare minimum. I could remove the years, though I was including those more to show the increasing frequency of such activity.

More importantly, if I just keep the information on my hard drive, in what format should I present it on-wiki in the future when I feel the time is relevant? Obviously, I don't want to reveal personal information about user's, but I don't feel like saying they were outed is revealing that. SilverserenC 23:17, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

When you say "in what format should I present it on-wiki in the future when I feel the time is relevant?" I'm not sure what you mean... are you thinking about starting an RfC or ArbCom case or something? 28bytes (talk) 03:46, 7 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm not sure at this point, though I feel keeping track of attack sites on Wikipedia editors is a good idea. I'm just going to go ahead and keep it on my hard drive and turn the subpage into an even simpler list, with the bare data. SilverserenC 06:20, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Why am I being ignored?

It's been over a few and I have patiently been waiting for my usurpation... Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Changing_username/Usurpations#I_Mystic_I_.E2.86.92_Weka

Yet those who go after me already have theirs done. I am still waiting.

Why is this? :(

--Zombie Kid90, ZK, Dan (talk) 13:31, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

I don't like to grant usurpations that could make SUL conflicts worse (there was a User:Weka active this year on other language Wikipedia), but perhaps another crat would be willing to do so. 28bytes (talk) 16:17, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Who would I talk to about possibly getting extensions added to Wikipedia?

Hello, I am a top editor on DDOwiki, which is a wiki for a popular MMORPG. I recently was in the process of creating a couple of templates on my wiki, and I checked on Wikipedia for ideas on how to make my templates work. I was in need of creating a set of templates that could convert decimal numbers to roman numerals (Template:Dec2roman) and roman numerals to decimal numbers. I was able to use this wiki's Template:Dec2roman as a starting point for my Template:Dec2Roman. This wiki did not have a Template:Roman2dec however, so I created one on my wiki (Template:Roman2Dec), which works great; however, when I attempted to copy it to Wikipedia I found that Wikipedia does not seem to have mw:Extension:Loops OR mw:Extension:VariablesExtension installed, so my template does not work here. Whom might I talk to about getting these extensions installed on Wikipedia or can you suggest an alternative way to write my template with existing extensions. Thank you for your time -- ShoeMaker   ( Contributions Message )   00:52, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Probably making a proposal at Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) on the lines of your posting here would be a step in the right direction. It might also provide you with some feedback on how the community rates the importance of such a feature. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 00:56, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
