Proposed deletion: DeskBrowse

I think that perhaps software used to interact with the internet, either for content retrieval or content distribution, would perhaps fall within the scope of this WikiProject, in which case other related WikiProjects might be Wikipedia:WikiProject Software and Wikipedia:WikiProject Free software.

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Internet

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 23:05, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Phorm rating

I'm not a member of this Project and thus don't want to rate articles on its behalf. However, I suggest that Phorm is a lot better than "Start" class. (This is not self-praise: my only contribution to the article has been to reformat a single footnote.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:52, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Twitter

I have also posted this message at WikiProjects Internet culture and Blogging.

In an attempt to get Twitter to Featured article status, it has been suggested to me that the article gets an independent copyedit check from an editor who isn't involved. As a Top-importance article in your WikiProject, I wondered if some of you would be willing to read the article through and correct any copyedit errors you come across. Thank you! Question

I wanted to ask a question about some research I want to do. I want to search approximately 20 different terms in google and find out where the Wikipedia page for each term ranks compared to other online resources. Specifically, I would be looking at terms for dermatologic conditions. So, for example, with the following search [1] on my results screen Wikipedia is the first entry, followed by medscape. Can I use google trends/"Google Insights for Search" to accomplish this? Or is there some other way I can compare google pageranks? ---kilbad (talk) 21:06, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

There are a number of online tools that come close to this, but not exactly. Why don't you use google and search for the 20 terms. Such questions are outside the scope of wikipedia. SunCreator (talk) 13:24, 13 October 2009 (UTC)

Internet articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Internet articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Facebook statistics

Can someone update the article, following the recent IPO of Facebook, which has increased the traffic. Some suggestions I would point:

i) Add a secondary source, rather than Socialbakers.com
ii) Increase the list to 100/150/200 countries
iii) Add three more columns, namely Sl no, penetration, change%
iv) Convert the external links in the stats into ref with cite templates
v) Expand the text
vi) Add more than one type of stats, if possible
vii) Represent some data in form of graphs/charts or a better world map
viii) Add better links in external links section
ix) Have updates for all countries at one time, not like as it is
ix) Rename to Statistics of Facebook

Anyone, please review this. By going around the topic, I also found an article unupdated for a long time, Facebook features. Thanks, extra999 (talk) 09:32, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Questions of purview

What to tag? TCP/IP protocols that are of use on the interwebs proper (ie other than DHCP-style protocols that are only used on local isolated networks) are fairly obvious candidates to be dealt with here. Web boom/bust businesses and web 2.x businesses & certain Internet appliances, NGOs like IETF, ARPA, etc. seem to fit well here, as do. Seems to me like some overlap with the Computer networking WP would do more good than harm, but to try to duplicate the efforts of Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet culture would have us drowning in pirates and ninjas. Thoughts? Other areas underserved?MrZaiustalk 14:52, 14 September 2007 (UTC)PS: Businesses like Google etc seem to be covered by Internet culture, and it might be nice to maintain a slightly more technical and organizational scope here.

Category:Generic top-level domains & Category:CENTR members probably need in. Is it normal to use bots to populate initially? Between those and Category:Internet standards & their daughter cats, that's already several hundred articles that fall under our purview but not many other technically focused groups. MrZaiustalk 15:20, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

Navigational box

There is good information in the articles on the Internet, World Wide Web, and in related articles. Hard to peruse them all or understand what is there. I suggest that a navigational box is needed, but how to order (classify articles) it and what articles to include (and, much worse, not include!) is a real problem. Right now, a naive researcher (me, except I was trained in the industry) has to blunder about a lot of links, and see alsos to find information. Student7 (talk) 13:34, 30 January 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:42, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

These texts were used as references in the creation of the History of the Internet article. However, they were added to the article at a time when there was no accepted system of inline citation, and there is no link between the references and what they are cited to support. Article needing improvement: Metacrap

I stumbled upon metacrap the other day. This article badly needs improvement. The term apparently originates from Cory Doctorow's 2001 essay. The article itself has exactly one citation (to the essay itself, violating the independent clause of WP:RS and maybe WP:SPS), two inbound links (one from the Cory Doctorow article) and a {{notability}} template plopped onto it since 2007. I was almost going to submit it for AfD, but it seems that while the term has not reached popular usage there are at least multiple references to the term and essay by independent sources. I'm not sure if that's enough to pass WP:GNG, but I figured if anyone feels that strongly about it they can submit it for AfD themselves. With all due respect to {{sofixit}}, abstract self-referential 'meta' topics are not my forte. Given how stale the article is (revision statistics), I figured this might point some interested people to it and perhaps serve as a shot of epinephrine to restart its barely-beating heart. Hi everyone, I recently moved Web Storage (capitalized) to Web storage (lower case), thinking it was a generic name of a software concept, but I got a message from MilkMiruku who thinks it is a proper name belonging to the W3C.[2] Did I just make an embarrassing mistake with my move? Digital Identity

Hi everyone. I am aiming to improve the Digital Identity article, I think there are serious issues with the content in general terms, doesn't cover the wide range of meanings and studies related to the term, but I haven't found anyone who is more experienced with wikipedia or within social sciences to help me out. I would be doing an extensive scholarly research on the topic due to an educational assignment. I didn't get a response on the talk pages of the article and I would need experienced users to point me in the right direction, because the problems can't be solved with minor edits. It has been suggested by several people that the article might need a complete rewrite, since it is too technical and its focus is too narrow. Could you point me in the right direction? Bettinusz (talk) 10:16, 19 March 2012 (UTC)

I rewrote a few significant parts of the Digital identity article, I think it was hard to understand, overcomplicated. If you could give me some feedback on the writing, style, anything that would be great. I also added a few extra sections, because the article was only focusing on technical aspects, I thought that was too narrow for the subject. I will try and add some sociological perspectives as well. Thanks, Bettinusz (talk) 22:21, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

I would like to bring your attention to this forum

Hey, guys. I hope I've come to the right place to discuss a possible HTML5 version of Wikipedia, given that most project members have background about this stuff.

As some users may know, HTML5 is a new version of the HyperText Markup Language designed with the DOM, AJAX, and competition with Adobe Flash in mind. Each time the development team has attempted to introduce HTML5 to the MediaWiki software, it broke several scripts and bots, so they dropped those changes. For more information about the HTML5 revolution, click here. To test whether your browser is compatible with HTML5, click here.

Here are some main points from the main discussion at WP Village Dump:

  • Wikipedia pages should be divided into semantic elements that a regular viewer wouldn't care about, but that would make processing by AI simpler. Examples of such tags include article (for the body of an article), nav (for navigation elements and category links), and section (for sections of Wikipedia articles).
  • Inline MathML could be used rather than PNG to display equations and formulae in articles, in order to save bandwidth and allow easier processing. For example, MathML equations could be copied and pasted into documents, in whole and in part, much more easily than PNG equations.
  • Editors should be encouraged to use appropriate tags for emphasis, instead of just bold or italic. This is a W3C recommendation and, while not necessary, could be used to improve the machine-readability of featured articles. (Not everyone agreed to this, but it's worth discussing.)

There are also a few things I haven't discussed yet, such as Microdata and WYSIWYG editing. Any other ideas? Seriously, don't hesitate to propose or discuss them! 68.173.113.106 (talk) 21:18, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Three people have told the IP that pixels are absolute units, and presented references such as W3C and the UN, but the IP keeps reverting to "pixels are relative units". Hi! I suspected that the Prince/Prince XML addition to Template:Layout engine nomenclature was some kind of illicit marketing, since it is not used in any web browser, but instead some kind of expensive proprietary web-to-PDF converter. Bufferbloat

Hi wikiproject, Bufferbloat is a fairly hot subject, and I would love it to have a decent article about it. What we currently have falls shy of WP:Brilliant prose. I can't really fix it myself at the moment. Things are a bit too technical for me to completely work out. I did some copyediting and tagging of dubious and unsourced statements, but I could use some more hands on it. What I would like in particular for now is to inline source all unsourced information, and to remove all false information. When that's fixed, we probably need to re-section, possibly expand and prune where needed. All help is welcome. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:03, 7 January 2012 (UTC)

I reworked the article, splitting into sections (which might need more eyeballs), refs, exts, links etc etc and using the ACM ref more. I tagged some weaknesses at the top of the article. Widefox (talk) 17:24, 28 February 2012 (UTC)
If you have specific questions about bufferbloat, please drop me a line. The article certainly needs serious work, and there has been a lot of progress since the last time people worked on the article. Unfortunately, I don't have time to try to fix the article myself. Internet Top Level Country Domains

There is an ongoing debate on the Northern Ireland Talk Page about what Top Level country domains should be listed. At present the infobox lists .uk, .ie and .eu, but this is disputed. The infobox also has a note saying ".uk is assigned to the United Kingdom of which Northern Ireland is a part, .ie is assigned to Ireland of which Northern Ireland is a part, and .eu is assigned to the European Union of which Northern Ireland is a part. ISO 3166-1 is GB, but .gb is unused"

I would like to ask if anyone has any knowledge of matters relating to Internet top level country domains and if they could please add their insights to the ongoing discussion. Myself and a few others believe it is inappropriate to claim that .ie is Northern Irelands internet domain, because .ie was assigned to a different country (the Republic of Ireland), whilst others say it was assigned to the whole island and point to the fact that the organisation that runs the domain, does welcome people from Northern Ireland to purchase domains too.

Any additional input on the talk page is most welcome. Thank you BritishWatcher (talk) 11:35, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Earliest filed invention disclosure for a structured markup-based hypermedia browser?

Maybe not of any consequence whatsoever, but are there any earlier published patents or filed invention disclosures in the US Patent Office earlier than (PO891-0201) that describes a hypertext/hypermedia browser that was based specifically on structured markup language? There were a multitude of related efforts going on in that era with stand-alone hypertext readers, but there doesn't appear to be any others that were filed earlier based (quite specifically) on structured markup (application of GML/SGML). The referenced filing was made to gain 'publish' status, the decision to file for publish status over a patent was an intentional decision at the time as a 'just in case' to ensure public use. The actual disclosure date preceded the public appearance of Mosaic and HTML by about a year. Though from private industry and not from academia, it can't be determined what if impact it had, if any, but the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletins were widely distributed and read worldwide in that era as one of the leading professional industry journals. Human flesh search engine needs to be globalized

The article at Human flesh search engine really needs to be globalized. The article essentially describes what is known as "doxxing", however focuses entirely on Chinese examples. The topic is notable, but hardly warrants an article dedicated to China and nothing else. I think the article should be renamed, and the content completely revamped to represent a more worldwide view of the subject, reliable sources willing. --benlisquareTCE 13:40, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Help with a solution?

Hey, I've got a question: I moved an article into a user's userspace. It was about Keep.com, which had some issues with establishing notability outside of AdKeeper. The sources were pretty much all about AdKeeper. The website was sort of originally AK, but not entirely. Keep.com is pretty much a new rendition of the idea/concept of the website, although the original URL for AK does redirect to the company's website where K.C is listed along with another website. I'm not arguing the notability for AK, but I don't know exactly how to progress with K.C. There's some coverage, but much of it is sort of trivial in tone. I thought that maybe it'd be a good alternative to create a page for the company as a whole and list the company's products/websites. We could link to the AdKeeper website and have some information about the other websites/products the company provides. Would that be a good solution here? The trouble factor is that we don't have a huge amount of coverage for the company and the lion's share of coverage would be coming from the article for AK. Leaflet For Wikiproject Internet At Wikimania 2014

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Vivaldi (web browser)

The article Vivaldi (web browser) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This browser is quite far from being a released product. All we have so far is a "second preview" of a prototype. Neither in the literature there is any evidence of strong expectations by the internet communities about this software. Considering also that the very first versions of this article looked like a "copy-paste" from the manifacturer's website, the subject doesn't appear to have yet enough noticeability (and Wikipedia shouldn't be used as a "teaser" for future softwares whose first release date is yet totally unknown and unpredictable.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

About Net Neutrality

Hello all, I would appreciate it if you could take a look at Net Neutrality and see if the article is neutral to Wikipedia standards. Is there WP:UNDUE weight placed on either side of the arguments for/against net neutrality? Should the two sides be equally represented, or is one of them the majority view and the other only a minority view?

Implement an Internet forum Navbox

Hello all,

This talk page seemed the best place to propose my suggestion so here goes. I have been thinking about Internet forum related articles and have come to the conclusion that it may be a good idea to implement a navbox to link articles together to aid the reader with browsing the articles.

This navbox would include groups for software (with subgroups of free and open-source and proprietary software populated from Comparison of Internet forum software) and hosting, in addition, a below section with links to Bulletin board system, Textboard, Imageboard and List of Internet forums.

In practise, it will look similar to this transclusion from my draft, subject to any improvements (such as using a group named "other" rather than a below section):

As this would be quite a large implementation with many articles being edited to add the navbox I thought it would be best to seek a consensus before going ahead. So please add your comments here on whether this would be beneficial. Jordan Mussi Talk 13:04, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

INWG history including INWG 39, consensus to base Internet on INWG 96, etc

The History of the Internet article should include the work of the International Packet Network Working Group (INWG). It should include the 1975 consensus to use the INWG 96 protocol by Vint Cerf, Roger Scantlebury, Hubert Zimmermann, and Alex McKenzie, that resulted from "Pouzin and Cerf issued INWG 85 calling for a vote by mail on an End-To-End Protocol to be forwarded to standards bodies.". Then cover the subsequent move by Kahn and DARPA to base the Internet on the older INWG 39, which had been part of the basis for INWG 96.

There should also be an article about the International Packet Network Working Group (INWG series). That seems to be harder because they don't seem to be online (maybe a reason for their lack of influence?)

And an article about Alex McKenzie (cf Alexander Anderson McKenzie, Draft: Alex McKenzie) could be based on User:W_Nowicki/Sandbox4.

For a start, see Alexander McKenzie. "INWG and the Conception of the Internet: An Eyewitness Account". Annals of the History of Computing January-March 2011 Vol 33, No 1, pp 66-71. Outlook-related edits by User:Ians18

Greetings, everyone. Our fellow Wikipedian User:Ians18 has engaged in a number of edits that I find highly controversial; they are being discussed in Outlook.com § Requested move 17 August 2015. I believe we need additional input. A summary of the dispute is as follows:

Traditionally, both Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Web App / Outlook on the web had four modules: Mail, Calendar, Contacts (or People) and Tasks. But Ians18 changed the names of Outlook.com, Calendar (Microsoft service) and People (Microsoft service) into Outlook Mail, Outlook Calendar and Outlook People and merged Outlook Web App into Outlook.com. He initially said that they are actually renamed, but now has retreated to the position of "their rename is announced and will definitely happen". I, however, cannot see any of these and believe he has taken too much for granted, is sailing too close to WP:CRYSTAL, and his point of view is badly influenced by being an Office 365 user.

Additional input is welcome. Fleet Command (talk) 12:10, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

Websites that are considered reliable sources

Something that has been bothering me for a while now is that it can be hard to figure out whether certain websites are considered reliable sources. Some pages can help with this a lot, such as WP:VG/S, which I use a lot. Such lists cannot list all possible websites, and they tend to be limited to a specific field (video gaming in the example given). Often the first place I go to figure out whether an unlisted website might be reliable is its Wikipedia article, but this rarely helps at all. I was wondering what the possibilities are for noting the reliability of a website on its own talk page. Has this ever been considered before? I'm not talking about a complicated explanation on each talk page, but a short template saying "is usually reliable," "may or may not be reliable" or "is not reliable" could help a lot. What are your thoughts on this idea? ~Mable (chat) 19:40, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Smart DNS proxy server

The Smart DNS proxy server article is in quite a poor state: repetitious, poorly structured, and, worst of all, completely unsourced. It's also getting some attention on the NANOG mailing list at the moment, but no-one there seems to be sufficiently motivated to improve it. Can anyone here help? -- The Anome (talk) 20:03, 11 November 2015 (UTC)

What about the email?

Hi all,
I recently joined this WikiProject, and notice that I'm the only participant mentioning email among the areas of interest. Anyone else?

Many articles in Category:Email don't seem to belong to the project. Why? Many of them use template {{spamming}}, which is tagged {{WikiProject Internet culture}}, although their content is rather technical. Is it all-right to add assessments to most of those pages? BTW, have no idea about how to assess an article's quality non-subjectively. Should one use class=Start as a default?

In particular, the suite of articles Email filtering, Anti-spam techniques (users), Anti-spam techniques, and Email Authentication are an attempt at explaining filtering. (There are still missing concepts, like analysing Received: by mixed heuristic and machine-learning approaches, and trade-offs between sender's privacy and receiver's security...) Someone wrote (please see the relevant talk pages):

Between them, they should be able to clearly answer questions ranging from "why do some valid emails never reach me?" to "how much work do ISP mail servers have to put into spam vs genuine emails" and even: "do laws (or anything else) influence anti-spam software's balancing of false positives vs false negatives?"

Do we agree?

Each of those articles is bound to boil down to a list of methods, possibly except the first. Then there is a nasty loop of {{Main}}: Email filtering#Methods<->Anti-spam techniques#Rule-based filtering, which should be removed. But how should those articles relate to one another?

WikiJournal of Science promotion

The WikiJournal of Science is a start-up academic journal which aims to provide a new mechanism for ensuring the accuracy of Wikipedia's scientific content. It is part of a WikiJournal User Group that includes the flagship WikiJournal of Medicine.[2][3]. Like Wiki.J.Med, it intends to bridge the academia-Wikipedia gap by encouraging contributions by non-Wikipedians, and by putting content through peer review before integrating it into Wikipedia.

Since it is just starting out, it is looking for contributors in two main areas:

Editors

  • See submissions through external academic peer review
  • Format accepted articles
  • Promote the journal

Authors

  • Original articles on topics that don't yet have a Wikipedia page, or only a stub/start
  • Wikipedia articles that you are willing to see through external peer review (either solo or as in a group, process analagous to GA / FA review)
  • Image articles, based around an important medical image or summary diagram

If you're interested, please come and discuss the project on the journal's talk page, or the general discussion page for the WikiJournal User group.

New User Seeking Approval to Add Content and Reference to Defining Section

Hello I am requesting approval for content that I just recently added on the Responsive Web Design Page. I will include the added content here:

In addition it's important to understand that Responsive Web Design tasks include offering the same support to a variety of devices for a single website. As mentioned by the Nielsen Norman Group: content, design and performance are necessary across all devices to ensure usability and satisfaction.

Here is my source in proper MLA Format:

^ [Schade, Amy. "Responsive Web Design (RWD) and User Experience." Responsive Web Design (RWD) and User Experience. Nielson Norman Group, 04 May 2014. Web. 02 Mar. 2017. https://www.nngroup.com/articles/responsive-web-design-definition/ "Responsive Web Design (RWD) and User Experience"] Check |url= value (help). www.nngroup.com. Retrieved 2017-03-02.

I believe this information is important because although the definition is clear and evident, there is a lack of sense, purpose and goal for completing RWD's. Also explaining necessary accomplishments like creating content, design and performance is also necessary to mention. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dmvhustler (talkcontribs) 06:56, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

This Company Is A Giant Scam

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!! Refuse to refund my money!!

After a failed attempt to cancel my renewal (due to some unknown issue) Bluehost have failed to honour their money back guarantee, stating yet more technical issues. They could neither explain the problem nor give even an estimated time frame for my refund, refusing to narrow it down to days, months or (shockingly) even years!

Their customer support could barely understand what I was saying half the time, and the wait times for live chat were upwards of 10 minutes. When I asked simple questions they would ignore my question and simply rattle a scripted nonsense that had nothing to do with my query! Popular pages report

We – Community Tech – are happy to announce that the Popular pages bot is back up-and-running (after a one year hiatus)! You're receiving this message because your WikiProject or task force is signed up to receive the popular pages report. Every month, Community Tech bot will post at Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet/Archive 1/Popular pages with a list of the most-viewed pages over the previous month that are within the scope of WikiProject Internet.

We've made some enhancements to the original report. Here's what's new:

  • The pageview data includes both desktop and mobile data.
  • The report will include a link to the pageviews tool for each article, to dig deeper into any surprises or anomalies.
  • The report will include the total pageviews for the entire project (including redirects).

We're grateful to Mr.Z-man for his original Mr.Z-bot, and we wish his bot a happy robot retirement. Just as before, we hope the popular pages reports will aid you in understanding the reach of WikiProject Internet, and what articles may be deserving of more attention. If you have any questions or concerns please contact us at m:User talk:Community Tech bot.

Warm regards, the Community Tech Team 17:16, 17 May 2017 (UTC)

Input on name change and new draft for Internet media company

Hello! Wondering if members of this WikiProject would be interested in looking at updates for digital media company, Uproxx Media Group (formerly Woven Digital), which owns brands including Uproxx and BroBible. For the company, I have written an updated draft seeking to improve the current article and in my edit request, I've also proposed moving the article to the company's current name, Uproxx Media Group. Since I have a conflict of interest, I'm trying to find neutral editors to review the proposed draft and weigh in on the name change suggestion. Would anyone here be able to help? Thanks in advance. 16912 Rhiannon (Talk · COI) 20:44, 30 June 2017 (UTC)

Shorty Awards

As far as I can tell, the page Shorty Awards is a matter-of-fact listing of the historical events in a chronological fashion.

A user has come by with drive-by-tagging of {{COI}} and {{Advert}}, refusing to give any specifics as to why.

Attention would be appreciated, at Talk:Shorty Awards.

Current & previous

Knowledge in wikipedia, even I.T./web stuff, does not need to only show current update information. Pages can be used to preserve information on what is related and especially the previous development of the thing/people/event. For example, instead of forcefully remove web hosting services which are no longer free of charge, or no longer exist, organised the data better to show development or phases.

Rationale

  • Knowledge and culture: learn, absorb, improve, present and pass on.
  • Things or services that existed, let them leave a mark in wikipedia. Try not to erase history. Respect.

How to organise

Please consider use separate sections / sub-heading/ tables: (ideally the tables listing are sortable by column headers )

  • current providers, with the start year/month and status as current.
  • previous providers, with valid-from and valid-to dates or start-date and end-date.(or year)

So when people try to learn or trace the topic about free web hosting services, more comprehensive information are available. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_free_web_hosting_services

Similar arrangements can be made for other pages, including but not limited to, IT / web / technology / services.

p.s. Thanks for consideration. (I posted this after experiencing my contributions in other pages sometimes forcefully removed/edited away.) A designer and ex-teacher who is interesting in knowledge & culture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Xaaan5 (talkcontribs) 16:00, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

I suggest new article in English Wikipedia

pl:Projekt internetowy What do you think about new article in English Wikipedia - Internet project (or Internet projects). In my opinion should be the long article in English Wikipedia. Dawid2009 (talk) 09:15, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestion! I quickly read through the Polish article using Google Translate, and the subject looks interesting. I am not finding any reliable sources on this topic, though. Do you know about any news articles or books on Project Internet? Any language would be fine. ~Mable (chat) 10:05, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
No I don't know but similar topics in ENwiki there are. Article in PLwiki there is since 2002 while I have not found any informations about Internet projects in other wikies. Dawid2009 (talk) 10:56, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
In English Wikipedia interesing informations there are in Collaboration#Occupational examples#Technology but it is not a lot of. Mybe based on Category:Internet-based works, Online encyclopedia or Online newspaper (Wikitribune) article will be possible to created? Dawid2009 (talk) 11:19, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
It may just be a bit difficult to write an article on this topic, especially if there's not many sources on it. I'm honestly not entirely certain what "Project Internet" entails yet; based on the Polish article, it looks more like it should be an "internet project" in English and covering any online collaboration project. If there isn't any formal definition using this term, there's not really a topic to write about. Maybe the article we're looking for is Computer-supported collaboration? "Online collaboration" redirects to that article. ~Mable (chat) 14:36, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
I see pl:Projekt Internetowy include websites based on online collaboration but also for example SETI@home. I will try question to main authors of this article in polish Wikipedia (I personally think that Internet project is a less complex concept than "Computer-supported collaboration" and has very similar definition to "Online collaboration"). Dawid2009 (talk) 17:08, 26 September 2017 (UTC)
If you create a draft for it and add some sources, I'd be happy to look through them and work on it for a bit ^_^ I'm still not sure if it is actually a topic discussed by reliable sources. If it's all original ideas, then it doesn't really work on Wikipedia. ~Mable (chat) 18:51, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Alexa "negative increase"

Some infoboxes about websites, such as Wikiquote, use a red upwards-pointing arrow (alt-text="negative increase") to indicate that a website's rank number has become mathematically smaller, even though that means its prominence has increase - nothing is "negative" at all, we wouldn't say a song moving from #10 to #9 on the charts had a "negative increase", just that it went up.

Also, Alexa itself uses red down arrows and green up arrows, so this is someone's own method instead of reflecting the source.

If someone can tell me something I'm just not getting about this, I will be happy to learn. But at the moment, it looks like this "negative increase" is nothing if not confusing

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:42, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Internet Association

I could use more eyes on this. The IPs turning up to add material are painfully obvious shills; they've progressed from uncited hagiography to material that is cited merely in that, yes, it appears to be true. I don't really have the time to take a critical look and decide if it actually merits inclusion, and if we are getting a one-sided selection of material (well, we are, but what else is out there?)

It seems entirely possible an uninvolved editor will disagree with some of my recent excisions; that's fine. I just want uninvolved editors to take a look. Pinkbeast (talk) 10:19, 8 August 2018 (UTC)

Blog Networks are not Link Farms

A few years ago someone proposed combining the Blog Network article with the Link Farm article, which is completely inappropriate. Unfortunately I and other people who know the difference don't monitor the Link Farm page.

Link farms have nothing to do with blog networks and vice versa. By definition a link farm is merely a group of sites that all link to each other - from special "reciprocal links" pages or groups of such pages. The original link farm was called Buddy Links and the pages were manually created and sent out to members every week. Subsequent link farms were created through special software that pushed out the linking pages.

The original link farms did not violate search engine guidelines and were not intended as spam. They were used to keep pages indexed in highly volatile search indexes. Search engines like Google and Yahoo eventually updated their policies to forbid the practice and link farming died. The end of link farms came more because of abuse of the software creating them than because of the search engines' objections to them.

Blog networks used for linking intentionally do NOT link to each other. The commercial blog networks attempt to avoid detection by search engine algorithms by not reciprocating links among themselves. Private blog networks are harder to describe but many are created by "turnkey systems" that spit out a ton of blogs.

It is more appropriate to call them Private Linking Networks.

The PBNs/PLNs usually do not interlink with each other. The spammers instead inject links into hundreds or thousands of other sites to point to their network blogs. They may also submit the blogs to RSS directories and other directories for links.

I have not edited the article as I write this because the bad merger has been in place for so long. I'm leaving this comment and adding the page to my Watch list. If someone else wants to comment and offer a suggestion for how the blended article can be improved, I'm willing to consider that before proposing a new article be created.

I'd rather keep this as simple as possible but link farms and blog networks are about as closely related to each other as reindeer and mongooses. Michael Martinez (talk) 02:31, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

I agree with Michael Martinez that a "blog network" is very different from a Link farm, and the pages should not have been merged. However, and this may be part of the challenge, it seems that I might have a different point of view. To me, a blog network is a network of different blog sites that are all affiliated under a single umbrella. The authors may choose to affiliate. Or a corporation or organization may create a network of blogs on different topics or subjects. To me, a "link farm" is a set of sites typically used now for creating links in an attempt to influence search engine rankings. Regardless of perspective, I do agree they are two different things. -Dyork (talk) 02:54, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Perhaps the solution has been sitting in front of us the whole time. The topics in this article fall under Spamdexing (not really a word used outside of Wikipedia but that's a whole different discussion). Why not merge this article into Spamdexing? That would be the simplest way to fix this problem. Michael Martinez (talk) 14:03, 8 January 2020 (UTC)

Interesting idea, but I don't see "spamdexing" being in common enough usage in regular language to warrant a page. And I do think a "blog network" can in fact be a positive thing when used in certain contexts, and just the name "spamdexing" makes me immediately think negatively. I would not support merging them into a new "spamdexing" page. Dyork (talk) 22:44, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Internet Society

Hi WikiProject Internet editors: I am looking for fresh eyes to review a request at Talk:Internet Society. I work at Internet Society, so I have a conflict of interest that I disclosed earlier this year. Since late last year, there has been some back-and-forth editing on the article and discussions on its talk page. I joined Wikipedia to be a resource to assist Wikipedia editors in bringing the article up-to-date. To start, I proposed updates for the article's Organization section because the section in the live article does not cite any references. I welcome collaboration and I am happy to edit my proposed draft to better meet Wikipedia's principles, practices and spirit.

Thank you. Neville at Internet Society (talk) 10:21, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

I am among those who do not appreciate the Internet Society's PR team trying to whitewash and rewrite the article to remove important and relevant content. The current article could certainly be improved, but not be replacing it with the 'about' page of the Internet Society website. Ferdeline (talk) 20:09, 17 June 2020 (UTC)
I would like to mention to volunteer editors who may read Ferdeline's accusations here and elsewhere on Wikipedia that what I would like to see is an encyclopedic entry about the Internet Society that not only presents an up-to-date picture of the organization with independent verifications to give credence to what is said, but also to do this via Talk pages in a manner that embraces and follows the policies, procedures, spirit and collaborative nature of volunteerism editing at Wikipedia. I want to do this in a transparent manner, hence openly asking the community to help complete this work. If volunteer editors decide my proposed content needs to be adjusted to better meet Wikipedia's style and rules, I am happy to collaborate in a manner that results in a better encyclopedia entry.
Thanks. Neville at Internet Society (talk) 13:40, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Please make full use of Template:Decrease for websites' Alexa rank

Greetings!

Alas I don't have time to personally join your worthy project, but I still wanted to give you a small heads-up (kinda cross-posting this from WikiProject Websites, so hopefully more people see it):

Template:Decrease, which produces these nice red & green arrow-thingys indicating a rank change (  &  ), actually also has options for negative increase   {{IncreaseNegative}} and positive decrease   {{DecreasePositive}}.

These should be used whenever there is a ranking in which - like e.g. in sports - 1st place is best, and higher numbers worse.

This is used as intended in a number of Wikipedia articles, but notably not in the vast majority of websites which have an Alexa rank. But Alexa ranks are like that - the lower, the better!

So to avoid confusion for the reader, I strongly suggest to henceforth use the proper pointing arrow on all Alexa rankings (and also on all other applicable rankings).

I tried to update a few articles to use this by hand, but I could not find a way to correct all instances automatically. If there is one, I'd love to know how to use it. --LordPeterII (talk) 18:38, 14 August 2020 (UTC)

I hope this is the correct way of reaching out to you. I was pointed at your project by another Wikipedian in Talk:JSON Meta Application Protocol. Jaudriga (talk) 08:16, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

Suggest creation of list article on HTTP authentication/Security access control methods

There doesn't seem to be any good place on Wikipedia listing the different access control methods such as Basic, Digest, Bearer (JWT, OpenID, Oauth), API keys, HTTP+HTML form-based authentication, TLS-SRP, Secure Remote Password protocol, Kerberos (protocol)/SPNEGO. I gathered them together based upon lists from outside sources and lists inside of Wikipedia on there respective article pages and it seems like as they all try to solve broadly the same problem usually using the same HTTP Header (Authorization: <type> <credentials>) they seem to be a prime candidate for a list article.

Now I have never done article creation before and am not confident that I know enough to properly cover the topic and I am not even confident that I have adequately checked that what I want doesn't already exist (though if it does, I can't find it where I'd expect it) so I would appreciate it if someone else could create it for me. Thank-you. El komodos drago (talk to me) 10:46, 1 December 2020 (UTC)

Requests for MasterClass article

Hello! My name is Alyssa and I work for the online streaming platform MasterClass. I've disclosed this on my profile and at Talk:MasterClass, where I've proposed some changes to make the article more accurate and up to date. More specifically, I've asked to correct language about the company's founding and remove a sentence which is not specifically confirmed by sourcing. Editor feedback has been limited, so I'm hoping some editors from WikiProject Internet can take a look and update the article for me. Thanks! MC Alyssa (talk) 01:33, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

.eco

The page .eco may need watching and updating. I've rolled it back to the February 2020 version, which does NOT include much if anything regarding the trademark controversy involving Planet .ECO LLC.

Two "connected contributors," likely paid, have attempted to add this material, but in a way that contradicts official information from ICAAN.

There may be a place for information about this controversy in the page, but only if it has received enough independent coverage to be "encyclopedic." In any case, it should be added by someone with no conflict-of-interest.

There may be an argument that the whole topic is non-notable and that it should be redirected to List of Internet top-level domains#E.

While I haven't violated WP:3RR, I am far enough into this back-and-forth that I need to stop and get input from others with no "skin in the game," which is why I'm posting here.

Courtesy ping to JWatTheDotECO, Cabayi, and TheDotECO whose edits were undone by my reversion back to the February 2020 revision. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 00:26, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

  • Note to other editors - Davidwr does have a case of one or two new editors who seem to have clear COI continuing to edit and update this page for .eco. It seems that they are with one of the companies that was unsuccessful in bidding for the .ECO top-level domain back when ICANN was going through the newgTLD expansion process. They are now repeatedly editing the .eco page to change it from the correct information about the current operator to instead have information about their company. They seem to be going back and forth a great amount with Davidwr. I have added my support / agreement with Davidwr's suggested path for the page. It would be helpful if some other editors also weighed in at Talk:.eco#.eco_or_.ECO®. Thank you. - Dyork (talk) 01:21, 30 January 2021 (UTC)
  • Request for other editors to participate - As noted above, Davidwr is engaged in an editing situation where another editor with clear COI (as his company name is part of his Wikipedia name) is continuing to argue the page should be about his company. Whenever Davidwr or now myself revert the page back to its original purpose, this editor then reverts the page back to his version promoting his company. We could use the assistance of other editors to help resolve this situation. Please see Talk:.eco for the lengthy exchanges - and scroll to the bottom for the current state. Thank you in advance if any of you can assist! - Dyork (talk) 01:30, 4 February 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Sandbox organiser

Sandbox Organiser

A place to help you organise your work

Hi all

I've been working on a tool for the past few months that you may find useful. Wikipedia:Sandbox organiser is a set of tools to help you better organise your draft articles and other pages in your userspace. It also includes areas to keep your to do lists, bookmarks, list of tools. You can customise your sandbox organiser to add new features and sections. Once created you can access it simply by clicking the sandbox link at the top of the page. You can create and then customise your own sandbox organiser just by clicking the button on the page. All ideas for improvements and other versions would be really appreciated.

Huge thanks to PrimeHunter and NavinoEvans for their work on the technical parts, without them it wouldn't have happened.

Hope its helpful

Unison Online Service - needs some help, history of the internet?

This was marked as a stub recently, but has been unsourced and apparently COI since 2009.

I've just put a note on its talk page which I'll copy below:

Having seen this in Category:Stubs I considered nominating it for AfD, as unsourced since forever and initially created with COI (by user "Fdudden", whose only other two edits were to create their user page). But a "BEFORE" search (Dudden Unison) found several non-wiki-mirror mentions of Unison and it looks as if it has a place in the history of networking. Some expert in the field might like to expand this article, or redirect it to somewhere that it's mentioned already.

It seems to have been the platform used by Ecunet, which had an article before being turned into a redirect, but which apparently still exists.

Sources found, verifying its existence, perhaps hardly amounting to notability but probably justifying a mention somewhere in the encyclopedia:

History of the internet, and religious networking, are not my specialist subjects. PamD 09:11, 21 February 2021 (UTC)

PamD (talk · contribs) - Thanks for raising that article. I do have a background in the history of the Internet, but I had not heard of Unison Online Services. I opened a new section on the History of the Internet Talk page to see if anyone might be able to help more. I am also on some "Internet history" email lists and can ask there, too. - Dyork (talk) 02:01, 23 February 2021 (UTC)

New historical resource available (Nov 2020) about DNS and early history of Internet

Just noting that in November 2020, ICANN published a report titled "The Creation and Administration of Unique Identifiers, 1967-2017" that may be very useful as a reference source for some of the historical info in articles related to DNS, the history of the Internet, ARPANET, and other topics. - Dyork (talk) 11:55, 14 May 2021 (UTC)

Guidance sought at Verizon Wireless

Please see Talk:Verizon_Wireless#No_longer_a_division. I am seeking guidance on the best way to update the Verizon Wireless article since the description of Verizon Wireless as a division of Verizon Communications is no longer accurate and I believe bringing clarity to this issue will improve the article. As I work for Verizon and have a conflict of interest, I ask others to look at my requests and make edits on my behalf. Thank you, VZEric (talk) 15:21, 18 March 2021 (UTC)

  •   Partially implemented - Just noting that some work has been done on this. The article name has been changed and the text updated. VZEric still has a number of requests waiting on the Talk page (and I have not had the cycles to continue to work with him on this). - Dyork (talk) 11:59, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, Dyork, for your help on the article so far. If you or any other editors have questions about my proposed updates to the page, we can discuss more at Talk:Verizon_(mobile_network)#No_longer_a_division. VZEric (talk) 16:38, 20 May 2021 (UTC)

Yahoo Infobox

Hello there, editors! My name is Spencer and I work for Yahoo. I posted an edit request on the Yahoo Talk page to update the Infobox, which was partially implemented. User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

HomeLight article proposals help

Hi, a while back a few updates were proposed to improve the quality of the HomeLight article here, and since the Request Edits Queue seems to be stalled I am hoping an independent editor might be interested in reviewing those proposals. User wants to remove "derogatory" from the lead of Libs of TikTok

You are invited to join this discussion!

A user on the talk page has advocated for changing "derogatory" to "critical" in description of the account's tweets. Evidence is provided of tweets mocking and belittling others based on gender/sexual orientation/race. Others disagree whether this constitutes "derogatory" material.
