Proposal to stop granting ambassador rights

I just tagged the Wikipedia:Education program/Ambassadors as historical, but now I think that I was hasty because people are still requesting these userrights.

The ambassador documentation has not been updated since May 2013. In December 2014 a big change happened in that the staff support that was originally a necessary part of the design of the English Wikipedia Education Program ambassador program was discontinued as described at Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard/Archive_8#First_update.2C_18_December:_Change_in_volunteer_role. There was some discussion on the future of the ambassador program at Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard/Archive_8#Future_of_education_extension_userrights. In Feburary 2015 at Wikipedia:Education_noticeboard/Archive_9#Editnotice_for_this_page there was some talk of stopping future Education program ambassador applications.

Here are some aspects of the ambassador program which no longer exist:

  1. staff support for community ambassadors
  2. access to the tools of the mw:Extension:Education_Program, which is obsolete now and replaced with https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/
  3. a foreseeable future in which the Wikimedia Foundation does anything to encourage the English Wikipedia Education Program
  4. a community of participants in semi-regular communication with itself
  5. up-to-date training and documentation (perhaps nothing since 2013, and most of that no longer applies)
  6. alignment with practices of Wikipedias other than English
  7. a usable discussion forum - this one is an unreadable frenzy of automated announcements unlike any place on Wikipedia with an expectation of human engagement

@OhanaUnited, Xaosflux, Omni Flames, and Samtar: God bless all of you, you seem to still be granting education extension userrights to people. Are you in agreement that the only technical abilities granted by this userright are related to the education extension? Do you have any reason to believe that any of the people to whom you are granting these userrights are using the education extension?

I am still in favor of having an ambassador program, but I would like to have one that matches the reality of what people actually do and what support coordinators can actually provide.

If any of you would talk to me by phone or video chat, or if there is interest in a group talk, then please email me and let's try to coordinate something. Alternatively, if any of you are able to go, WikiConference North America will be held in San Diego Friday to Monday 7-10 October. I intend to talk to others there about whatever might be done to continue an ambassador program in some form. I am not aware of a reason to continue to draw attention to the education extension or its technical functions. Thoughts? Blue Rasberry (talk) 20:45, 10 August 2016 (UTC)

TLDR: Propose to stop granting ambassador userrights on English Wikipedia

The only use of these groups is related to the education program extensions (courses, institutions, students, etc) - as far as I can tell - this entire system is deprecated and can probably be completely shutdown. I think the WEP people packed up their bags and went home a long time ago? — xaosflux Talk 21:56, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
I'm inclined to support this, reluctantly. The ambassadors program hasn't been active for a considerable period of time and I doubt that many of those listed at Special:OnlineAmbassadors and Special:CampusAmbassadors are still active in the program. Omni Flames (talk) 22:19, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Omni Flames I want to save people the trouble and disappointment of requesting userrights that are of no use and trying to learn tools which are deprecated. At the same time, I think that it would be useful to have a legacy iteration of an ambassador program and want to sustain whatever community interest and collaboration still exists and revive the older enthusiasm that has gone down a bit in all the reforms. I think lots of people have ideas for what an ambassador program should be and how it could work, and I wish there could be a community reflection on where we are and what should happen next. I am not certain what should happen. Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:49, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
  • I supposed technically we don't grant "ambassador permissions" it is either:
  • course coordinator
  • course online volunteer
  • course campus volunteer
If courses are still being used, these may still have use. — xaosflux Talk 22:21, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux These are the userrights associated with the ambassador program, and I called them ambassador rights, but you use the actual terms in your description. So far as I know, there are no courses using these terms, and so far as I know, there have not been since early 2015. I do not know a technical way to check that but it seems likely considering how complicated it is to set up a course and how no one has sought support. Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:45, 10 August 2016 (UTC)
Bluerasberry There is a lot of information in the logs, for example here is the courses log - which suggests people still are actually using courses hosted on the English Wikipedia. — xaosflux Talk 00:42, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux Thanks, I was not aware of that, and this does change things. I still am not sure that new people need these userrights, because documentation about the rights still makes a range of claims about an education program which I think are not valid. However, the log you linked does show that 1-2 classes are posted every month and some of those are live uses of this software. This was more than I imagined. I am unsure if these pages are somehow being autogenerated by the newer tool, because the newer tool used to generate course pages in two places but no longer does. If that is the case, someone might be generating courses here but using the instance of the course on the other tool.
You mentioned above removing the extension, and I see no reason to do that anytime in the next few years in case anyone wants to use this one. Still - I wonder why this tool is being used? One recent class includes Korean language articles, and this tool only monitors English Wikipedia. The newer tool provides a monitor face that is probably equivalent but which covers all languages and Wikimedia projects simultaneously, so I think that would be better for a multi-language course. This user and perhaps other users may be familiar with the old software and not ready to switch. For newer users, I recommend trying the newer software, but obviously I am out of touch with who uses the older software and why.
This situation would benefit from more discussion. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:55, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Agree - while the "ambassador" program may be defunct, I don't really know what our roadmap is with the "courses" extension - if it really isn't supposed to be used anymore, we can simply remove all the ep-related groups (instructors/coordinators/volunteers/etc) from all users and they won't be able to make any more courses. I'm not sure if anyone from WikiEd reads this page anymore? — xaosflux Talk 14:02, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
FWIW, we read the page! :) We just aren't using ambassadors in our programs anymore. Any decision reached by community consensus regarding the future of the role is fine with us. Pinging TFlanagan-WMF to see if any of the other English language education programs are still using the extension; Wiki Ed is not. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:05, 11 August 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping, LiAnna. We'd defer to community consensus as well. I'm sure there are still some users of the extension, but we do not recommend it for any people we work with, nor do we grant any related user rights (on this wiki or any other languages, projects). We hope that the Programs and Events Dashboard (documentation and discussion here) will fill this void, and hope to be able to recommend widespread adoption soon (it's still beta for the time being, use with caution and please report any bugs). Hope this helps. TFlanagan-WMF (talk) 15:54, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Will the Programs and Events Dashboard cater for training outside of educational institutions? Reading the documentation link, it appears to only support the Education Program? Kerry (talk) 03:43, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Kerry Raymond The dashboard is useful for any sort of meetup, online or offline, in any context. It provides a signup mechanism and the best available outcomes report. However, as you note, most people who have been involved in its development have at some time said that it is only for use in education programs. The same was said for the education extension, but I myself used that for all sorts of group projects. I just wrote some user documentation at meta:Programs & Events Dashboard as a way of advocating that the tool be used for any event or meetup. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:40, 22 August 2016 (UTC)

Hello, everyone ping'd above has "course coordinator" userrights, which means that this is the group which is supposed to grant and manage access to "campus ambassador" and "online ambassador" userrights.

The situation is that few people are active in managing these userrights. Other, newer tools have overtaken the functions formerly only available with campus ambassador tools. Still, every month some users are reading about the program and requesting userrights. I would like to market the old campus ambassador program as deprecated. I hope for the following to be outcomes of this -

  • New users cease requesting these tools with the expectation that this is an active program
  • Anyone who already has the tools keeps them indefinitely
  • Anyone who wants the tools, and who reads past the notices that they are deprecated, can still request them
  • The documentation for these tools, which has mostly been sitting without edits since 2013, gets marked as historical
  • Anyone can regroup to propose new projects, if there is any interest left. Current participation is low in any old systems.

Thoughts? Is there anyone who would raise any concerns in opposition to this? Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 19:48, 16 August 2016 (UTC)

Agree that the system, such as it was, has withered. I have migrated to the Dashboard, which seems to be working, more or less, although it is updating a little slow. The concept of ambassador, as far as I can tell, does not work in Mexico and a number of other places, so no real reason to grant "ambassador rights" either.Thelmadatter (talk) 22:24, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
Whatever is decided, people who run Wikipedia training sessions and edit-a-thons etc need the account creator right in order to be able to create user accounts beyond the "6 in 24 hour from the same IP" rule. I vaguely recollect that my course coordinator right was somehow linked to my account creator right (or they came as a package). As I have previously had "enthusiastic" people remove my account creator right without any consultation because I hadn't used it for a few months (a bizarre idea for something that is essentially a solution to a crisis), how will I be able to recover this account creator right without some way to demonstrate that I run courses? Has anyone thought through how this is managed with the proposed changes? Kerry (talk) 03:28, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
There is a workaround the need to create accounts. If there are more than six who need to have new accounts, I tell them to connect to the internet via the data services on their cellphones. Voila! new IP addressThelmadatter (talk) 15:10, 20 August 2016 (UTC)
I don't actually use my course instructor rights to create course pages as I do my outreach outside of formal education settings so am not welcome at the Education program :-( I've asked quite a number of people what framework (support network, community of practice, whatever) exists for those of us doing training outside of the Education program and the answer seems to be "go ask [insert someone else's names]". So if it is the ambassador program that is supposed to be the go-to place for people like me, I'd like to see it continue to exist in some form or other. Kerry (talk) 03:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Kerry Raymond Note: "account creator" is standalone, and is not required to be used with this system. — xaosflux Talk 04:05, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux You yourself only let me keep my account creator right in the face of opposition because of my standing in the education program. The rules still say that people with these userrights get special approval that is not available to people without these userrights. I hope that I can depend on you to support a revision of that rule to grant account creator rights on equivalent terms to the education program's expectations, or something mutually agreeable. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:20, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
That was mostly to end the conversation that there was already an exception reason. I am in support of an update to the ACC guidelines to allow experienced editors that are active in outreach to maintain the ACC flag so long as they are otherwise active. — xaosflux Talk 13:29, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux Granting the right to experienced editors has never been among the requirements for receiving account creator rights. Most people involved in educational outreach had almost no wiki experience, and the account creator userright review process served that demographic by granting the right based on need. We talked about this at the account creator page. I want to balance increased security with encouragement for people to do outreach programs. I am ready to discuss changes to the status quo but I hope that the precedent over previous years remains in place even while everyone remains flexible to change. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:54, 22 August 2016 (UTC)
Bluerasberry If the English Wikipedia is no longer going to be hosting "institutions" "courses" "instructors" and/or "students" we should just remove these from everyone and shut the system down - because that is all these user groups "do". Do you have a proposal for how to use this extension for something else? — xaosflux Talk 04:08, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Note: If we are still hosting these functions, these groups give access to permissions that may still be helpful. — xaosflux Talk 10:56, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Xaosflux People are still using the functions granted by the tools. I am not ready to propose taking away tools that people are using. I am content to wait indefinitely, leaving the tools in place for as long as people find them useful. At the same time, I believe that most users who have not already learned a system would benefit from going to another system first. If they do not find that system sufficient then they might check out the older system. Anyone who already learned the older system and wants to keep using it might continue to use it. Tentatively, if no one is using the system in 2018 then perhaps it could be shut off at the end of 2019. Blue Rasberry (talk) 13:25, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
Since my (Korean) class was mentioned, and since I am one of the "dinosaurs" using the old extension as well as relying on the help of one or two Korean wikipedians whom we still call ambassador here, and since I've been with the program since before it existed (good old WP:SUP) days, here are my few cents:
  • I use the Education Program framework because a) I was never officially or unofficially told it is deprecated, if there was some blog somewhere, I missed it - didn't get any email or talk page message b) similarly, I am not aware of any replacement or guide to such except one mentioned at [1] and I learned of this only recently. C, note that this new replacement (?) seems focused on the US, and I have to say I never appreciated how US-centric this program has became. It is good that there is the version for non-US, but I have to say that with all the WMF-speak about developing countries/non-English outreach, this seems to be totally NOT what is happening with the education program from my perspective. But I digress.
  • Regarding any ambassador or instructor user-rights or statuses, they never seemed much useful to me. All it was and IMHO is is an example of an unnecessary complication and bureaucracy. Nobody needs any special rights to use that namespace or pages. But before the userspace is retired, we need a) to make sure we archive it and b) to make sure there is a replacement that users going to the old namespace are redirect to (informed about).
  • However, I am sad to hear that the Ambassador Program is going away (gone?). What has replaced it, in particular, outside US? How can professors and teachers receive help from the WMF and the community these days? I have not been following the developments, granted, but frankly from where I stand I cannot see ANY improvements (again, maybe they are visible to someone in the US system...).
  • Finally, we really need to prune old pages. Is Wikipedia:Global Education Program and Wikipedia:Education program still valid or not? I still give those links to people interested in the program when I can an occasional inquiry... I wonder if I missed any. I suggested many times we need to merge all such pages into one that would be kept up to date, but.... Meh. Oh, I note that the Wikipedia:Education Program extension is still linked from the top here. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 13:40, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
@Piotrus: Piotr, for what it's worth, I created that WP:Education Program page back before we had officially spun off to Wiki Ed. We no longer use those pages whatsoever, though I'm not sure if others do. I'd imagine the information there is far outdated (compared, for example, to the Outreach:Education page. We've always created a problem with too many pages, and that tends to confuse people attempting to get involved on Wikipedia. My "vote" would be to make those pages historical, but if anyone still finds them useful, of course they should continue to use them. Jami (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:33, 18 August 2016 (UTC)
Ever since it moved over to the new system (dashboard), I can't sort by country to find out if any Canadian university is still participating. I simply can't click on 200 course titles and find out which course belongs to a Canadian university. The Dashboard is great for at-a-glance, but only if you could associate which course is to which university. I would have been more active but I can't do my job when my ability is limited by the information given. OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:53, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

On a related note, there are many people applying for online ambassador position throughout the year. While most are new accounts and don't even merit the time to type a "no" response, we do get some high quality applications. To me, it demonstrates interest but unfortunately they don't really get matched with courses as far as I know. There is a disconnect between the supply (ambassador) and demand (courses) that should be fixed rather than posing the question "is the ambassador right obsolete?" OhanaUnitedTalk page 06:06, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

OhanaUnited My perspective is that there are multiple demographics which have a stake in this. The old education extension userrights are technical rights to make an event page for a class. I just documented at meta:Programs & Events Dashboard how the functions of those userrights can be gained with an alternate tool. There is also the social custom that you describe, of ambassadors also being social support for users of an event page. I am not aware of any plan in place to provide a forum for people in a similar role. As you say, if it is not easy to search for off-wiki events, then it is not easy for anyone who would volunteer to provide social support to such events to find them.
I am ready to support some kind of legacy of the ambassador program in which people volunteer to support classes or any other kind of off-wiki event, but right now, it is difficult to find any list of these events. Obvious listings would be by geography as you mentioned - "all classes in Canada" or even "all meetups in Canada", or any other region. I expect that eventually the new dashboard will make events possible to search by either location or theme, and when that happens, a new "ambassador" concept will be easier to develop. In the meantime, if someone wants to be an ambassador, I do not know where to send them to volunteer. The best advice I could give is for them to contact their regional Wikimedia user group or chapter, or check with a campaign like Art + Feminism, or maybe go through the tedious and unlikely task of browsing course lists here. I definitely liked the ambassador program and want it to continue; I just propose to pause on-boarding new people and regroup until there is something to offer. Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:01, 19 August 2016 (UTC)

@Bluerasberry: Some of the UK courses supported by Wikimedia UK still use the course extension. Special:Courses lists planned courses and you can see that there are at least three universities involved. On top of that, there are likely to be other courses which are scheduled to take place but do not yet have a new course page set up. To take an example the University of Portsmouth and Queen Mary University London both use the course extension and both run their courses in the second semester so don't have pages set up for the forthcoming courses yet. What this means is that we don't have a complete idea of how many people are intending to use the course extension.

As long as the courses are active, it should be possible to hand out new user rights. Say that one of the course leaders finds the teaching assistant they've been relying on to help run the course moves on to a new job. They would then need to be able to replace that person with the same permissions.

outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org is a very good tool, but for some of our course leaders the course extension does what they need so there isn't any incentive to learn a new piece of software.

My feeling is that the documentation around the various tools to run courses could do with some attention. For instance Wikipedia:Course pages mentions that "Current course pages are managed through dashboard.wikiedu.org" but doesn't explain what the difference is. Richard Nevell (WMUK) Thanks for continuing this conversation with me by email, and perhaps we can talk more by webcam. Students cannot enroll in course - token broken?

I created several courses as usual, ex. Education Program:Hanyang University/Sociology of Globalization (2016) (Fall), but this time I decided to use the token to prevent fake students from registering. The token is "Hanyang". However, students in all my courses get the following error: "[V9ZSzgpAEKsAADcPAlMAAABH] 2016-09-12 07:01:34: Fatal exception of type "MWException" . " How to fix it? Can the token requirement be removed? This is a bit urgent. CC User:Piotrus (myself). --Hanyangprofessor2 (talk) 04:28, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Critical Skills

At third level learning it is expected that students will develop skills that will not only enable them to successfully negotiate their university experience but which will also help them in other areas of their lives. These skills include analytical skills, the ability to deal with complex arguments, the ability to evaluate evidence and make balanced judgements and the ability to communicate ideas. These critical skills are developed throughout university learning and in practice. This critical skills course aims to develop these skills early in the university learning experience and which will in turn complement and support disciplinary learning. It is designed to help first year students to learn, experience, practice and develop various essential skills that will support their leaning. These skills include:

  • Academic writing
  • Information literacy
  • Research skills
  • Analysis and use of data
  • Analytical thinking
  • Communication
  • Critical thinking
  • Developing learning skills
  • Interpersonal skills

For this assignment students will create accounts and complete The Wikipedia Adventure tutorial. They will then make ten small edits to improve the quality of existing articles.

(Two endorsements are needed for online ambassador approval.)

  • As of now, I'm neutral because of 2 main reasons. One, most of your contributions are using automated tools to make changes and don't demonstrate actual editing or understanding of policies. Two, you disclosed that you had other accounts in question 2. This raised a red flag because we had an issue which used multiple accounts and engaged in deep-deception scheme in this program. Would you mind telling us more about your other account or disclose the account name? OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:33, 14 June 2016 (UTC)

  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I have been heavily involved with welcoming and helping new users. I mainly focus my attention on the #wikipedia-en-help chat on IRC and occasionally welcome editors with one of my custom-made Welcome templates.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Some important ways we could welcome newcomers is to be polite and non-technical. Editors are often scared of Wikipedia every time a warning notice or even a caution notice appears on their talk page, and many leave Wikipedia due to complicated policies and standards.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
At the time of submitting this application, I have not had any major conflicts, blocks or bans, and involvement in arbitration.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I am on Wikipedia for about 3-5 hours daily. Yes, I will available for at least two hours per week.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
To make sure my students were not violating copyright laws, I will first ask my students if they have copy and pasted any text or submitted any pictures. I will then check the copy and pasted text and see if they have paraphrased it or not. For pictures, I would make sure the picture was their own work or used in fair use. This will go for all other copyright areas.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
If one of my students had an issue with copyright violation, I would resolve it by giving he or she a lesson and tips about copyright. I will also guide them on how to avoid future copyright violations.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is an occurrence, in which a person is using intellectual property and other material that isn't approved to be made for free use or the standard free use guidelines.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?

Omni Flames (talk · contribs)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I'd like to be an ambassador because I've found that helping new users is something which I generally enjoy doing on Wikipedia. I would like to encourage and assist educators and students in working to improve Wikimedia projects.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I'm most active here, on the English Wikipedia. However, I've also had some experience with Commons, and working with images there. I'm semi-active on the Simple English Wikipedia, mostly reverting vandalism and patrolling new pages. In addition, I'm a member of the small-wiki monitoring team, and often hang out on #cvn-sw on IRC. However, I'm relatively new to cross-wiki countervandalism, and so haven't participated in it much as of yet.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
I worked heavily on fried chicken, and recently got it to GA status. I have seven DYK credits: Munin (video game), Banton, Romblon, Rokh (video game), Snail Mail (video game), Mayday! Deep Space, Give It Up! (video game) and Sneaky Sneaky, six of which were created by myself. I also created three articles which are currently good article nominees: Space Marshals, Sneaky Sneaky and Mayday! Deep Space.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I'm a trainer at the CVUA and am currently training 5 users. You can see my work here. I'm active on the #wikipedia-en-help IRC channel, and have helped numerous new users there. I also occasionally welcome new users and IPs with Twinkle.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
We have a lot of policies and guidelines, and many of them are very complicated for new users. I feel that there should be simpler versions of policies to make it easier for inexperienced users to understand. I think that processes such as adoption are very useful for new contributors who are eager to help build an encyclopedia, but many new users never even find this page, so maybe these kinds of links should be easier for new users to find.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
None that I can think of off the top of my head. I occasionally close and comment on discussions at ANI and I've done a lot of work in contentious areas such as AFD, but I haven't been involved in any large-scale conflicts as of yet.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I generally edit Wikipedia for a few hours a day, although longer on weekends as I have more time for it.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
If I had any concerns that there could possibly be any copied and pasted text in the work of one of my students, I would try asking them if they took anything in their work from anywhere else. If they said no, the duplication detector and Earwig's copyvio detector are two very useful tools for finding copyright violations that I use occasionally, and would check if I still believed that there was a copyright violation.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
I would try explaining to them what a copyright violation is, and how to avoid it. I would also inform them of why it's important not to use copyrighted material on Wikipedia (except in some situations listed under fair use, although this requires attribution). I would then link them to some other helpful pages which explain copyrights, most likely WP:COPYVIO, and (if applicable) WP:CLOP.
  10. In your own words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is the illegal use of any material (including text, images, or other media) which is protected by copyright law.

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I would like to be an Ambassador so that I could help educators and students so that they follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, as it is something that I usually enjoy doing.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I've been around Wikipedia for a little over a year and mostly focus on content expanding, a bit of creation, vandalism fighting, and welcoming good-faith users. I also upload pictures on Commons and edit a bit on the Simple English Wikipedia and Wiktionary.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
I have contributed to mostly food, ice hockey and WP:RRTF articles. (Draft:Percy Jackson's Greek Heroes, Cup Ramyeon, Cham-ggae Ramyeon, Will Lockwood (ice hockey), Michael Garteig, Dakkochi, List of characters in mythology novels by Rick Riordan, Draft:The Hidden Oracle, and the like.) I also work hard on articles which are a bit away from GA status or have been nominated for GA status.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
As a member of the Wikipedia Welcoming Committee, Much of my Wikipedia Career is focused on welcoming new users, especially if they post on my talk page for help. I frequently use hatnote and twinkle to welcome new users.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
I like to think of WP:BITE as the most important guideline -- I think instead of posting a blatant level 4im notice on a new user's talk page would rather give an impression of hostility. Being polite, patient, and simpy being there for the newcomer and being a helping hand can help the user get used to Wikipedia's standard policies.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
    Nope.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I edit Wikipedia pretty much daily in my spare time (2-4 hours), and I can definitely spare a few hours a day for this task.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
If I saw something fishy, I would first ask them if they had copy-pasted information from another site. To confirm it, I would use Earwig's copyvio dectector. For violating Wikipedia's fair-use image policy, I'd first ask them, and to check, I would search the image up on Google.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
Then, I would personally tutor them on Wikipedia's copyright rules -- in my own words by providing links. Also, I would give them advice to prevent them from making copyright violations in the future.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
Copyright violations are incidents when a user/person has used a piece of work without the copyright holder's permission, i.e. the person who made it/owns it. (Examples include finding a picture on Google and uploading it as a free image on Commons, or uploading a fair-use image has a free image)

Hi, I would like to create a new course page for my Critical Arts in Education graduate course at CSUF. I am new to working in Wikipedia, and am interesting in teaching my students how to edit for content about education and the arts. Can you please advise me how to create a course? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by ActivistMommy (talkcontribs) 17:12, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

I would like to know whether there is a class project to write articles on each of the Federalist Papers. (For the benefit of non-American readers, these papers, written between 1787 and 1789 and supporting the ratification of the United States Constitution, are important in understanding the thinking of the framers of the Constitution.) As a reviewer at Articles for Creation, yesterday I reviewed three draft articles on three of the papers. I accepted one of them and had comments about the other two. (I declined one of them because it included three copies, an apparent accident by the author.) I don't have any particular concern. Properly written articles on each of the papers would be useful content for Wikipedia. I would just like to know whether there is a class project, which I assume there is, and who is leading it. I wouldn't expect to see three drafts on three of these historical documents unless there is a class project. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:26, 22 October 2016 (UTC)

Off the rails?

In the course of watching a bizarre discussion at Talk:Gamification[2] and reverting a spectacularly bad edit to the content page[3] I've come across a college class that appears to be an organized program of rewriting articles in sandboxes and user pages, subjecting them to peer review within the class, and then, apparently, dumping a bunch of student content into the article. I can't tell yet if any of the other students have made major edits yet, but if the other student efforts are of like quality they'll either get rejected entirely, or they'll break the articles. I'm curious whether this sort of thing is sanctioned, and whether this particular class is doing it the right way or has run off the rails. Is there anyone here experienced dealing with class projects who can take a look at it? I don't want to notify them just yet without knowing what I'm supposed to do here.

The project is here: Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/St Francis College/COM-2000-01 Mass Communication (Fall 2016)

Inappropriate direct mainspace editing by member of Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Alverno College/Microbial Ecology (Fall 2016)

A major single-edit revision of Rita R. Colwell has introduced a lot of unacceptable hagiography. I have reverted the edit and referred the course leader User:S L Seston here for guidance. Thanks Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:44, 28 October 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this here, Roger (Dodger67). Direct mainspace editing is allowed for student editors just like it is for anyone else. You're right to point out the style issues with that update — there's some peacock phrasing — things like "Besides these many distinguishing career paths" — and the tone of some of the writing is a bit casual in places — eg, "she is a huge proponents of increasing action of women and minorities in the fields of science and engineering". However, most of it looks like good content from acceptable sources to me, it just needs some editing for style. When User:S L Seston restored the content, they asked for specific style feedback on the talk page, which I think is the appropriate next step. User:Jami430 has volunteered to take a first pass at cleaning up the style problems.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:36, 28 October 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Sage (Wiki Ed), unfortunately I'm just on my way to bed now, I'll look in on it in about 12 hours to see if I can help. Very large single edits are problematic to deal with - throwing the baby out with the bathwater is almost inevitable. Highly recommend that editors do a number of separate smaller edits rather than "a full rewrite" all at once. It makes errors and style/content issues much easier to fix.
