In class - Introduction to the Wikipedia project

Welcome to your Wikipedia project's course timeline. This page will guide you through the Wikipedia project for your course. Be sure to check with your instructor to see if there are other pages you should be following as well.

Your course has also been assigned a Wikipedia Content Expert. Check your Talk page for notes from them. You can also reach them through the "Get Help" button on this page.

To get started, please review the following handouts:

Assignment - Create an account & complete intro trainings
  • As an individual, create an account and join this course page, using the enrollment link your instructor sent you.
  • Below, you'll find the first set of online trainings you'll need to take. New modules will appear on this timeline as you get to new milestones. Be sure to check back and complete them! Incomplete trainings will be reflected in your grade (10% of the assignment total).
  •  When you finish the trainings, practice by introducing yourself to a classmate on that classmate’s Talk page.

Week 2

Assignment - Critique an article

As an individual, select TWO Wikipedia articles to evaluate. Each article should be about a city around the world, and the cities should be similar in population.

Next, as individuals, complete the "Evaluating Articles and Sources" training (linked below).

Follow the instructions in the assignment handout and turn in your responses by October 19 to the dropbox in Compass.

If you have decided that you want to complete the rest of the project as part of a group, now's the time to pick your partner! By the end of the week, make a note in your sandbox about who you will be working with and what city you'll be editing.

Week 3

Course meetings
Monday, 24 October 2016   |   Wednesday, 26 October 2016   |   Friday, 28 October 2016
Assignment - Add to an article

This week, you'll familiarize yourself with editing Wikipedia by adding new content to the articles you selected (individually or as a group).

You are expected to complete all the assigned trainings.

  • Start by adding 1-2 sentences of new content to the article you have chosen. Cite that statement to a reliable source, as you learned in the online training. Consider using our textbook or other readings from class, or finding similar articles through the Cities journal or databases like Scopus or Geobase.
  • Some things to think about when deciding what to add: what sections are included in articles about both your cities? Is there information about the local culture, demographics, tourism, government, geography, climate? If something is missing, add it in!
