New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Stuartyeates,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Your draft article, Draft:150 Women in 150 words

Hello, Stuartyeates. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "150 Women in 150 words".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! JMHamo (talk) 08:23, 25 August 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Polish people of New Zealand descent

A tag has been placed on Category:Polish people of New Zealand descent requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2020 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:19, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Stuartyeates,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

Reviewer of the Year

John B123 has been named reviewer of the year for 2020. John has held the permission for just over 6 months and in that time has helped cut into the queue by reviewing more than 18,000 articles. His talk page shows his efforts to communicate with users, upholding NPP's goal of nurturing new users and quality over quantity.

NPP Technical Achievement Award

As a special recognition and thank you DannyS712 has been awarded the first NPP Technical Achievement Award. His work programming the bot has helped us patrol redirects tremendously - more than 60,000 redirects this past year. This has been a large contribution to New Page Patrol and definitely is worthy of recognition.

Proposed deletion of Bror Erik Friberg

The article Bror Erik Friberg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Old article with one source about a person that doesn't meet notability guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. StartOkayStop (talk) 08:40, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

That reads like one of the representative bios. What do you think, Stuart? Schwede66 09:02, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
There's quite a bit of stuff about him, I've added a ton of references to the article. Stuartyeates (talk) 20:39, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
All right then! Schwede66 03:00, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

academicbio

Are you ok with me tweaking your academicbio template for a few minor issues; mostly MOS-related? Schwede66 23:09, 1 January 2021 (UTC)

Hundred-year-old, questionable, ethnography is not appropriate here

Not sure what the age has to do with it. Many of these are attributed or support uncontroversial information so even if they are questionable they could still be useful. Not sure these deletions are appropriate and the canned edit summary doesn't help. Aircorn (talk) 11:42, 20 April 2021 (UTC)

MAP International

Hello, thanks for the feedback on my recent edits on MAP International...usually what I do is more minor edits, so I may have erred. You said I didn't provide an adequate explanation for the changes, but I thought that's what I did in the "edit summary" when I listed my brief reasons and used sources. What can I do differently moving forward? NashvilleNathan (talk) 03:54, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

(1) Content doesn't get removed because 'the case was dismissed'; if you have a source that says it as dismissed, you can add content saying that it was dismissed, but not remove the original content. (2) The entire MAP International article is based on primary sources, it seriously needs more tertiary sources, not the removal of them. Stuartyeates (talk) 10:23, 30 May 2021 (UTC)

Bare URLs

I really wish you would not use bare URLs when adding references. It's acceptable for beginners to allow bare URLs so that referencing happens at all. In my books, it really isn't acceptable for experienced editors. Schwede66 22:38, 3 June 2021 (UTC)

My standard practice is to add bare URLs and then use reflinks to fill them in. Reflinks has been unreliable recently, which is why the second step has been failing more frequently. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:26, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

New Zealand Romney

Hi, Stuart Yeates, I hope you are well! I never attach much or indeed any importance to the importance parameter of Wikiproject banners, but – just a thought – I did wonder if that of the most numerous sheep breed in one of the world's principal sheep-producing countries might perhaps be higher than 'low'? It's fine with me either way, of course. Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 11:02, 16 June 2021 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Tony Foster

The article Tony Foster has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Slim notability claim

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --- Possibly 02:02, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

I've dealt with it. Schwede66 03:42, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for providing feedback on Draft:Boris_Maciejovsky

I appreciate the time you took to go over my submitted draft.

In response to your comment, I made some edits to include more independent sources. Wikipedia:Independent sources states that independent sources are third party sources and that peer-reviewed articles meet these criteria in the absence of conflicts of interests. In the section on "Conflicts of Interests," the site states that "Caution is needed on topics with large commercial interests at stake, where controversy may be manufactured, and genuinely controversial topics where there may be a great deal of honest debate and dissent." I double checked the citations used for the draft and none of them appear to have any conflicts of interests; neither are they funded by companies nor do they deal with controversial subjects. I thus believe that the peer-reviewed academic publications in footnotes 12-18 meet the strict criteria for independence, as peer-review is the gold standard in scientific publications.

In the revised draft, I also included additional press coverage about the work of the author (footnotes: 3-8) and his TEDx talk, which was organized by a third party organization and thus also meets independence (footnotes: 19-21).

I also included links to the wikipedia pages of his co-authors in the last sentence of the last paragraph. And provided sources to the biography section (footnotes: 9-11).

Finally, I followed your advice and deleted all peacock references ('best', 'numerous').

Again, many thanks for taking the time to improve the submission!

Peer review articles written by you are not independent of you AND they don't contain in-depth coverage of you. You've still got a long way to go on the sources. Request on 21:40:45, 16 July 2021 for assistance on AfC submission by DaffodilOcean

Thank you for taking the time to look at Draft:Clare Reimers that I submitted to Articles for Creation. Reimers is an academic so she should be evaluated for notability using subject-specific guidelines, in her case WP:PROF is appropriate. Given this, she meets criteria #3 for WP:PROF because she is an elected "fellow of a major scholarly society which reserves fellow status as a highly selective honor". In her case she is a fellow of the American Geophysical Union and a fellow of The Oceanography Society, both of which are mentioned on her page in the section on 'Awards'. Can you please reconsider this submission given this information?

Draft Theta Network

I don't understand your criticism. I used the US patent office which is independent. I cited Bloomberg, CNN, Forbes, Huffington Post and other publishers which are independent. When mentioning some of the partnerships with Theta such as the World Poker Tour, I made sure to use the World Poker Tour's own press release which is independent confirmation as both the World Poker Tour and Theta are in alignment with the fact that such an agreement exists (and they would be the ones who would know). I also used three of the most reliable cryptocurrency websites for outside verification (binanceresearch, coinbureau and aboutbitcoin.io.). This cryptocurrency clearly qualifies as something noteworthy given its partnerships and current use and I have used as many independent sources as I can find. Unless you want me to cite github (https://github.com/thetatoken) which is where most of the code can be found (as I think that it is mostly open-source), I don't know what else you expect. With the exception of sites like the US patent office, coinbureau and aboutbitcoin which I utilized, no one covers cryptocurrencies in any great detail.Eincrat (talk) 12:59, 17 July 2021 (UTC)

Layton Reid

Hi my creation of Layton Reid was unapproved by a previous editor, her account was suspended because she had multiple accounts and she also happened to approach the subject person 'Layton Reid' and asked him to pay her to approve the page. I believed she rejected the article on purpose for financial gains rather than the suggested reason. Bill cai1992 12:21, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

This is about Draft:Layton Reid? Whatever motivations User:Jenyire2 / User:Mariah200 maybe have had, half the references in that article don't mention his name and most of the rest aren't independent. You can always leave the draft for a bit and see whether more sources get published. Stuartyeates (talk) 18:36, 19 July 2021 (UTC)

Use of circumflex as substitute for macron

Please take a look at the Google results for "Mâori". This does occur a lot (in particular many European keyboard layouts have easy access to â so people who have French keyboard layouts or the like are liable to use it in preference to ā). The Beehive have also used it a lot in the past, presumably for technological reasons. I'll try to dig up some worthwhile citations that can be added. —porges 02:43, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

Found at least a reference to this in a book so have cited it. —porges 02:52, 22 July 2021 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Stuartyeates,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here. Sent to 827 users. 04:32, 16 September 2021 (UTC)

Schwede66, I see. Thanks. I thought adding an AfC tag was unnecessary. They could've managed to move the draft to mainspace without adding AfC tag to it. Anyways, I'm happy with your response. ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:11, 18 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi User:TheAafi, I rescued the draft in very poor state and improved it. I then attempted to get some second opinions (I have been known to get caught up in things) then promoted it ~10 hours later after no one screamed. Stuartyeates (talk) 09:39, 18 September 2021 (UTC)

Draft:stikman (artist)

Hello! I have a search set up for drafts that contain the word artist, which is how I came across the above. I saw your note and poked around to find more sources. The first three currently in the article are new (Washington Post 2008, a public radio station and Cleveland.com). I do think the coverage is all about the same person. In any case, I resubmitted it, in case you are in the mood to review it again. Thanks. --- Possibly 02:27, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Hello again. I ended up adding nine good sources to the article. That has established notability and I have moved it to article space. Your input is of course most welcome there! Thanks. --- Possibly 05:10, 7 October 2021 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of George Turnbull Niccol

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on George Turnbull Niccol requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Henry Niccol moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Henry Niccol, is not suitable as written to remain published. The wrong volume of DNZB was cited; I fixed it. There may possibly be enough material there for an article, but the present article does not show it. ). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Draft:Liz Fong-Jones?

Hi. I see you've rejected Draft:Liz Fong-Jones for "references... do not show significant coverage (not just passing mentions) about the subject in published, reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject." Seems weird - among the 54 (!) references on that page, quite a few seem quite indepth, independent, and reliable. For example:

That looks like quite a bit, honestly. Que pasa? --GRuban (talk) 20:35, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

Articles that are based around her tweets, google+ posts and/or interviews of her are not independent. The wired one is rock-solid, but most of these are not indepth, independent journalism. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:05, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
You have a point, WP:INTERVIEW says there is a debate about how much to count interviews for notability; but they are not all interviews, much of each of them are in the journalist's words, they are all long, indepth, independent of each other, about the subject, and I'm not at all sure I picked the best seven, there may be better ones. Then there are 54 references. And the article is well written. That does all add up. I'm pretty sure this article would pass WP:AFD. However, I'm not really the author, so wouldn't want to step on his toes. @SquareInARoundHole: Would you like to
  • look for more sources, or
  • get a third opinion, or
  • we can be WP:BOLD, put it in mainspace and possibly go through an WP:AFD if Stuart or someone else nominates it? --GRuban (talk) 19:54, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
@GRuban: It's only my second article, so I would like a more experienced third party put some work into it before pushing it through to the mainspace. I do believe that this is a Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red and Wikipedia:WikiProject LGBT studies issue, and I'm more alarmed after she was removed from the Wikipedia:WikiProject Women project. She is also verified on Twitter, which in many ways has more strict policies on notability. I'm wondering if Portal:Transgender might be able to help us here? SquareInARoundHole (talk) 16:42, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Maybe @Tbhotch: or @CybJubal: can give some direction or assistance? My investment in this subject is around increasing both the representation of notable women and LGBT people in science and technology on WP. SquareInARoundHole (talk) 16:51, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
@Sceptre: You may also be interested in weighing in on how to get Draft:Liz Fong-Jones ready for mainspace? I believe she is sufficiently notable, but I'm still new enough that I may have done her a disservice in my article writing that it just needs cleaning up. WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Cheers, Primefac, via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2022 (UTC)

Article for Susie Woods

Kia ora, I note you have a tag on the page for Susie Wood saying it needs more secondary sources. Perhaps this could be reconsidered? I have added more information and references today and none of these could be called primary. No problem either way, just making a courtesy contact to explore the best forward to improve this article. Kind regards.Realitylink (talk) 05:19, 11 March 2022 (UTC)

Refs 4,5,6,12,13,14,15,18,19,24,25,26,27,43 and 44 have her as an author. Many more are published by her employer or a collaborator. These are primary sources and most of the article is sourced to them. We are trying to be a tertiary source, which means cutting out everything sourced to a primary source. I'm not seeing a single independent secondary source on the above article. On what basis did you promote it from draftspace? 174.212.227.174 (talk) 20:53, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

Sources such as https://www.edcan.ca/awards/the-ken-spencer-award/2015-winners/ https://www.tricitynews.com/local-news/education-spotlight-teachers-at-coquitlam-school-finalists-for-cmolik-prize-3052569 https://reporter.mcgill.ca/introducing-mcgills-newest-loran-scholars/ https://www.tricitynews.com/local-news/the-hug-that-turned-a-foster-kid-into-a-son-3063362 Stuartyeates (talk) 21:05, 3 May 2022 (UTC)
Passing mentions don't speak to notability and school newspapers are not generally considered reliable sources. The existence of sources isn't what your looking at when reviewing AfC submissions, it's the state of the draft. Also, if you're thinking that employees or students winning awards speaks to notability, that too is incorrect. See WP:INHERIT. 174.212.227.174 (talk) 09:08, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
If you have a problem with the article, I won't hold it against you if you put it up for deletion. Stuartyeates (talk) 10:56, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
