Court of Appeal discussion of tikanga edit

Of interest and might be added to the page:

The New Zealand Court of Appeal has accepted the following definition of tikanga in Takamore v Clarke [2012] 1 NZLR 573 paragraph 59, footnote 9:

"As defined by Mr Kruger, tikanga is the customary practices, attitude and regulation of behaviour of people. Tikanga is applicable and is accountable in terms of its general practice of the particular marae and the particular hapū. It is the connection between the cultural identity and the language of the people and their cultural practices. Tikanga, as the New Zealand Law Commission notes, is the closest Māori equivalent to concepts of law and custom, although the terms “Māori custom law” and “tikanga Māori” are not entirely interchangeable. Refer Law Commission Māori Custom and Values in New Zealand Law (NZLC SP9, 2001) at 1–2 [“Māori Custom and Values”]."

The case concerned Tuhoe tikanga relating to burials. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.97.97.17 (talk) 10:29, 24 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Update of article edit

I have just done an update of the article and removed the 'citations needed' flag. Further expansion can still support the information, especially from Māori authors, and from across varied applications and fields. Happy to discuss on here if anyone wants to Pakoire (talk) 23:46, 12 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
