Template:Did you know/Queue/LocalUpdateTimes

I organized the cities on the LocalUpdateTimes template by their timezone. I hope that is okay and that I didn't inadvertently mess anything up. I also want to readdress the cities used in this chart. I'm going to go ahead and try to add Los Angeles to the chart. Marcus Qwertyus 02:01, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Looks technically correct (I'm glad someone can make sense of my template code :P). I'd prefer it didn't have LA though. See my comment at WT:DYK. Shubinator (talk) 02:55, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Jameela Jamil

Hi. Re. Jameela Jamil,

I've tried to address the issues raised with sourcing, specifically as you mentioned on my talk that "the article didn't see much live time so we could put it up again if the issues are fixed" - I believe I have tried to address all of the problems in as prompt a manner as possible, given that I have not actually been able to be active on Wikipedia for the past week.

I believe that 'Sky' specifically is an appropriate reliable source.

The only remaining issue that I am aware of is, it has been tagged as a 'fan article' - I'm not sure why that is the case, because I'm not a fan, and certainly only included facts that I believed to be appropriate and verifiable. I've raised this query on the talk page of the person who tagged it, User_talk:Robofish#Jameela_Jamil.

As stated - I am, really, on a 'wiki break'; I'm trying to pop online when possible.

I'd appreciate it if you could revisit this and see if it could reappear in DYK, if at all possible. If something needs fixing or removing, then that's fine by me. Please have a look. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  19:26, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Looks like SandyGeorgia hasn't commented on it, so once you and Robofish agree, we can move forward. Shubinator (talk) 02:55, 6 November 2010 (UTC)
Robofish did say I was free to revert xis edit, which I did; nobody has complained so far. As Rlevse has left the building, I'd appreciate if you could help get this back in DYK; the only reason I'd like it up there is to get a bit more attention for the article, in the hope it can improve further. I'd think it now OK for DYK; if there are any objections, I'd be happy to remove bits, but right now, I don't see any. I'm not around much, so I'm kinda hoping that you can follow up on your comment re. happy to put it up again. If you want to give it some days to see if there are further comments, that's also fine by me; I will try to look in if/when I can. I'm just conscious that the longer this drags on, the more problematic a DYK becomes. Best,  Chzz  ►  23:56, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
No, nobody's complained, but I'd guess Robofish isn't exactly pleased with the current article. As I said before, once you and Robofish agree, I'll personally put it into a set for you. Shubinator (talk) 02:23, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
Hi again. Well, nothing has happened for over a week now; is there anything you'd like doing? Or is it OK?  Chzz  ►  03:08, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'd like either SandyGeorgia or Robofish to say it's OK before I move ahead. I can understand that one of them might be too busy, but surely you can work with one of the two to reach an agreement. Shubinator (talk) 03:13, 13 November 2010 (UTC)
OK, well; just let me know if you want me to do something, to satisfy whatever requirement. As mentioned, I'm not around much, but do keep checking back on this. Best,  Chzz  ►  23:17, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, nothing specific unfortunately, just a thumbs-up from one of the other involved editors. I'll try to ping SandyGeorgia soonish; things are starting to settle down. Shubinator (talk) 04:59, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Jameela Jamil at London fashion week 2009

Hi,

I've finally managed to source a pic of her, which I've uploaded and added.

Can that please be used in DYK?  Chzz  ►  20:52, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

If the article makes it to DYK, we can definitely consider the image. Have you made progress with getting approval from SandyGeorgia or Robofish? Shubinator (talk) 05:52, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
I heard nothing back from Robofish here; I've just asked the other user - User_talk:SandyGeorgia#Jameela_Jamil.  Chzz  ►  01:27, 2 December 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Shubinator (talk) 00:49, 3 December 2010 (UTC)
Just checking in here, seeing if any progress.  Chzz  ►  21:31, 8 December 2010 (UTC)
Left a note on Sandy's talk. Shubinator (talk) 01:03, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
OK, yep; I'm still checking back when I can, and I'll be patient.  Chzz  ►  16:34, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
... Chzz  ►  01:22, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

OK, so almost two months has passed. I have done my very best to address any issues raised. Others have also edited the article. I don't know of any more I can do, and I don't want this to drag on forever...therefore, for one last time, I request you reinstate it in DYK. If not, never mind, it isn't worth all that much trouble.

Thanks,  Chzz  ►  21:17, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

SandyGeorgia has looked it over, so barring a last-minute objection I'll put it in the queue tomorrow. Sorry for the delay in replying; between holiday festivities and a project I've had little time. Shubinator (talk) 15:49, 2 January 2011 (UTC)
Done, though the DYK community may still object. Shubinator (talk) 22:01, 3 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks.  Chzz  ►  22:50, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Help forgot my password!!!

From: User:Cameron E. Tyler

Hello User:Shubinator last year i created an account i think back in november and its called User:Cameron Ed Tyler and i forgot my password to my old account and i really badly want to get my old account becouse silly me put personal infomation about myself and my age and also birthdate and back then i did't not really care back then and it was that first time i was using wikipedia back then. you can also tell that i have not edited my user page sence november But i realise i should not put infomation about myself and i will never do that again is there a way you could please delete this account if you do could you please send a message on my user talk page thank you User:Cameron E. Tyler —Preceding undated comment added 02:15, 20 November 2010 (UTC).

Mkay, I'll repeat what Tone said: I've deleted that userpage, but if you want to rename your account you'll have to talk to a bureaucrat. I'm curious why you created three accounts for yourself: Cameron E. Tyler, Cameron Ed Tyler, and Cameron Edward Tyler. I'm also curious why you didn't ask Tone to delete User:Cameron Ed Tyler for you. Shubinator (talk) 03:38, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

DYKcheck

Shubinator, I award you this disco ball of knowledge in gratitude for your recent update of the DYKcheck bot, and in recognition of all that it and you have done in helping to keep the DYK project constantly moving forwards. EdChem (talk) 06:24, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi Shubinator... it is my understanding that the DYKcheck bot is yours. I ran it on Hans Freeman just after the article's promotion to GA status using the command line "javascript:importScript('User:Shubinator/DYKcheck.js'); dykCheck();" because I was wondering about its character count. I was surprised that it did not report that the article had already appeared as a DYK on the main page. I thought I should mention it to you in case it is a bug that is worth your attention. Regards, EdChem (talk) 16:09, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, it's because the article is tagged with {{ArticleHistory}} instead of {{dyktalk}}. I'll see if I can come up with a fix later today. Shubinator (talk) 20:52, 21 November 2010 (UTC)
Fixed. You might need to bypass your browser's cache to get it to see the updated script. Thanks for the bug report! Shubinator (talk) 05:17, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
No problem. More importantly, thanks for the prompt response and update. I have been looking for a suitable barnstar to show my appreciation both for your rapid response and update and for the help you have given to the DYK project. I considered the DYK Medal or the da Vinci Barnstar, but I notice on your Awards page that you have already received each of these, and I wanted a recognition that was appropriate but also new. I settled on the twisted dual geodesic dome named the disco ball of knowledge, which I found on the WP:Personal user awards page, as your work keeps the Did You Know project rolling along. I want you to know that your contribution is recognised and appreciated. Keep up the good work! Kind Regards, EdChem (talk) 06:24, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
Wow, thank you! Now I can have parties on my talk page :) Shubinator (talk) 04:58, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

Tall images

Please check this image formatting (currently in prep4) for compatibility with the bot and main page. Thanks in advance. Materialscientist (talk) 04:49, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Seems like it'll show up fine on the main page: see User:Shubinator/Sandbox/Test template. The bot as written won't recognize the image, which means that the bot a) can't double-check image protection, b) won't delete the image if it's c-uploaded, and c) won't tag the image with {{DYKfile}}. It won't crash the bot though. I'll see if I can modify the code to recognize {{tall image}}, but today and tomorrow look busy. Shubinator (talk) 14:00, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
I've come up with a fix for it, but I don't know if I'm going to be online tonight so I haven't updated the live bot code. (I like to be around for the first update after a code change.) I should be able to update the live code before that set gets on the main page. Don't wait for me though; the current code won't crash from {{tall image}}. Shubinator (talk) 19:29, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for looking into this, but the bot fix is certainly not crucial as this is a rare case. Materialscientist (talk) 22:29, 25 November 2010 (UTC)
Meh, it also keeps my Java skills sharp :) I've updated the live code with the fix. Shubinator (talk) 05:43, 26 November 2010 (UTC)
More worrisome is that the bot has double-edited 7 pages over the past 20 days. I'll see if I can fix that this week. Shubinator (talk) 05:57, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, I saw some. By the way, the tall image was(is) nasty on IE, leaving lots of whitespace. Use Firefox, I would say, but instead, we should ban such frames (or tweak their placement). Materialscientist (talk) 22:38, 26 November 2010 (UTC)

Hm, I'm not seeing a difference in my sandbox in Firefox vs. IE. I tweaked the bot, so double-editing should be reduced if not gone. If I see it's still happening I can take more steps. Shubinator (talk) 06:12, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
And two HNLMS ship hooks not found this week. It's because the bot expects them to use {{HNLMS}} instead of {{ship}}. I'll chat with the nominators later in the week. Shubinator (talk) 06:16, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
(ec)The whitespace (quite ugly, both above the image and to its left) only appeared on the main page. I have just checked some random text with that image in IE in a regular sandbox and it looked Ok. Materialscientist (talk) 06:20, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Have a look at this thread in IE. Then do sequential removal: (i) the "|" sign after "{|" - observed; then (ii) remove the table formatting {| |}. Materialscientist (talk) 06:32, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I see the weird formatting, but IE vs. Firefox is still the same. I'm probably being blind. Shubinator (talk) 13:43, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Maybe its about versions. I have it Ok on Firefox, and not on IE 6.5 (I don't bother to update my IE :-) but the complaint was from someone with IE7/8). My point was that the combination of table formatting {| + | + <div style="float:right;margin-left:0.5em;"> (which is part of the main page template) breaks the long images on IE. The point is not about the tall images, it is more about any unusual graphics formatting, like perhaps wide scrollable images, may look bad on IE. Right now I tend to think that it is easier to ban 'em all than bother with fixing :-) Materialscientist (talk) 13:56, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I see :) Yeah, the Main Page has a fair bit of unusual wikitext, so it's best to avoid odd formats. (And more so because it's the Main Page...people with all sorts of browsers/versions hit it every day.) Shubinator (talk) 00:18, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Question about DYKHousekeepingBot

Hi Shubinator... I'm wondering if there is a problem with DYKHousekeepingBot, as Wikipedia:Did you know/DYK hook count is not including hooks after November 24? Thanks. EdChem (talk) 12:32, 28 November 2010 (UTC)

Looks like it's showing everything now. It was behaving oddly because of a comment in the November 25th section with the text "Special occasion holding area". The bot uses that exact string (case-sensitive) to chop off everything after that line, so everything after Nov. 25th was removed. Then Nov. 25th was thrown out because it was badly formatted as a result. I'll see if I can come up with a fix, but it might be a while; the next two weeks will be much busier than I expected. Shubinator (talk) 23:28, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. Maybe if the check for that phrase also checked that it was a section heading (check for the equal signs, perhaps)? It would still allow for the possibility for a false positive, but it would make it much more unlikely. Anyway, no rush - it's good that the complete data are now being displayed again. EdChem (talk) 04:49, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
I've patched this bug; the bot now also checks for section headers as you suggested :) Shubinator (talk) 00:19, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

DYKUpdateBot

Just a note that DYKUpdateBot gave credit twice on Talk:Booby Island Light. It worked fine on the user page. Not a biggie, but I thought you should know. --Muhandes (talk) 13:27, 5 December 2010 (UTC)

Interesting. I'd hoped the code update a week ago would squelch this, but apparently Wikipedia's servers don't refresh as quickly as I'd thought. I'll tweak the code later. Thanks! Shubinator (talk) 17:24, 5 December 2010 (UTC)
I've updated the code; the bot won't double-edit any more. Shubinator (talk) 00:07, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Late update

Update is 12 minutes late. Should we do a manual update? Gatoclass (talk) 06:14, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Never mind, matsci has done a manual. Although you may still want to check the bot for problems. Gatoclass (talk) 06:45, 6 December 2010 (UTC)
Sorry, I'd forgotten that toolserver was due for maintenance today. I've restarted both DYKUpdateBot and DYKHousekeepingBot. Shubinator (talk) 15:47, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

The bot halted on the update of 6 AM UTC, 14 December. Please check its status if you are around. Materialscientist (talk) 07:44, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

He completed the next update. Thus seems Ok. Materialscientist (talk) 12:06, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
Interesting. The bot was essentially stopped by something in the queue it didn't like. My guess is the commas in the first credits. I'll debug this in the evening. Shubinator (talk) 14:43, 14 December 2010 (UTC)
The culprit was the oddly formatted redirect here. I've come up with a patch for the code, but probably won't be able to update the live code until the 00:00 run. Sorry for the delay. Shubinator (talk) 16:57, 16 December 2010 (UTC)
Running code updated. Shubinator (talk) 17:53, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
