Template:USdict deletion review

The US dictionary template was non-admin deleted after discussion by only 4 editors even though it fills an important niche since hundreds of millions of English-speakers have grown up with it. I suspect those editors involved may have little anglospheric experience outside the United Kingdom.

I teach English and have worked in dozens of primary and secondary schools in Australia and in dozens of elementary, middle, and high schools in the USA; I have even taught in cued speech. None of these schools taught English pronunciation with the IPA; they all used the short vowels ă, ĕ, ĭ, ŏ, ŭ, o͝o, and ə for æ, ɛ, ɪ, ɒ, ʌ, ʊ, and ə; the long vowels ā, ē, ī, ō, and o͞o for eɪ, iː, aɪ, oʊ, and uː; the digraphs ah, ar, aw, er, ow, and oy, for ɑː, ɑːɹ, ɔː, əɹ, aʊ, and ɔɪ; and the digraphs ch, dh, kh, sh, th, wh, zh, and ng for tʃ, ð, x, ʃ, θ, hw, ʒ, and ŋ. The relationship between short vowels and long vowels is crucial to teaching emerging phonics and this is done naturally with the breve ◌̆ for short vowels and the macron ◌̄ for long vowels. The only new character a student must learn is the schwa ə. This breve and macron system is employed in museums, zoos, dictionaries, and teaching aids across Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the USA.

Could you please reconsider the deletion? Thecurran (talk) 10:53, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

(tps) Thecurran, how is that different from {{respell}}? Frietjes (talk) 12:34, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
The vowels (e.g., uurr and y) used in Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key are subjective, ambiguous, alien to non-editors, not one-to-one, not supported by lifetimes of inculcation, not supported by any real-life institutions, not supported by any dictionaries (e.g., COD from Oxford in the UK or any major North American dictionary), not consistent with any phonics teaching method, and therefore not readily understood by 95% of our audience. It's basically Original Research thrust upon the populace by a small group of editors who are not representative of global English standards. Thecurran (talk) 01:09, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
Thecurran, if there's an error in a template, it should be fixed. I'm not saying {{USdict}} shouldn't be undeleted, I'm just saying that if {{respell}} has an issue resurrecting the former template won't fix the issues with the latter template. Primefac (talk) 01:36, 17 June 2017 (UTC) (talk page stalker)
There's very little that's right with {{respell}} and very little that's wrong with {{USdict}}. The complementary distribution is noteworthy because people who weren't taught IPA usually understand the macron & breve system. Aside from the fact that there's an automating module for respell, does it have any advantages? 04:21, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
(tps) Thecurran, given that there are over 6000 transclusions of respell, and there was only 1 or 2 transclusions of "USdict", you should probably see if you can gain wider community consensus concerning the issues that you have raise above. it won't help to have the template resurrected if the wider community doesn't want it. I don't think DRV is the best place to have a discussion, since there was nothing fundamentally wrong with the closure of the discussion at TfD. I would suggest going to Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Pronunciation and starting an RFC there. some interesting links showing some history: [1] and [2]. so, there is at least one user who disagrees with you that we should be using USdict. you are involved in the edit war. you should not have protected the article. im requesting unprotection of it68.151.25.115 (talk) 19:45, 24 June 2017 (UTC)

Have you tried using the talk page for the article? It looks like another editor, AussieLegend, has reverted you as well. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 19:51, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
Related to this IP's edits, he has added an AfD nomination template to Northern Mexico without creating the nomination page. I removed the template for this reason,[3] but he restored it.[4] I deleted it again,[5] this time explaining the problem on his talk page,[6] but he ignored that and restored the template again.[7] Perhaps that page needs protection until he gets the message. --AussieLegend () 20:51, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. I will watch the page. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:57, 24 June 2017 (UTC)
aussies revert was not related to your revert. i understand your name is related to australia but if you perceive there is some slight against you, you are mistaken. in any case, the TfD explains the rationales further.68.151.25.115 (talk) 22:59, 25 June 2017 (UTC)

Translating cite templates

Hi, in the translating templates edits such as this edit you have not translated the months in the template date fields and thus put them in the Category:CS1 errors: dates. Keith D (talk) 22:38, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Yes, it's a currently a two-step process. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:40, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
Thanks. Just have to get a double watchlist hit. Keith D (talk) 23:22, 1 July 2017 (UTC)
It should now be a one-step process. It just takes time to develop the script. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:23, 1 July 2017 (UTC)

Template:FIAT

Hi, Could I ask that Template:FIAT gets restored please?, It was deleted per Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2017 June 21 and I happily !voted delete in it! ..... but it now seems to turn out I was the creator of it and I have or had no idea why, Obviously I wouldn't ask in normal circumstances but there must be a reason as to why I created it otherwise I obviously wouldn't of created it ?, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:32, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi again, Well I've tried racking my brain for the last hour or so and there's just no answers, I assume it was created and I was meant to have updated it but it never happened ... The template was edited by various people but it was never added anywhere so I have no idea why in gods name I even created it ?,
Anyway sorry to be a pain but could you redelete as I don't think I'm ever going to know why it was created,
Thanks for restoring anyway, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 22:42, 2 July 2017 (UTC)

Baffling "no consensus" close

Can you salve my genuine puzzlement?

From what is visible on the discussion page, Frietjes Frietjes nominated this Template:College Cup 2010–2019 navbox for the wholly justified reason that it was "unused" (presumably at the time of his her nomination).

I can then see minimal discussion with just two keeps (presumably Frietjes Frietjes forgot to either withdraw his her nomination or come up with a new deletion rationale after the template started to be used) and no deletes, comments or neutrals.

Was there discussion elsewhere to justify your "no consensus" close, Plastikspork?

I've no personal interest in this - I'm just totally baffled as to your close... BushelCandle (talk) 14:01 and 14:09, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

BushelCandle, (1) I am female [8], (2) linking my name to the article U is not helpful and not the same as {{U|Frietjes}} which would have pinged me, (3) I see no problem with a 'no consensus' close since the template unorphaned during the course of the discussion, and this gives me the option to renominate it for another reason. however, I have no plans to renominate it, so I would have had no objection to a 'keep' close instead. Frietjes (talk) 14:09, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
(1) and (2) sorry about the code and gender mistakes. I hope you realise they were both unintentional and hopefully I have corrected both now...
(3) Given your comments, can the close now be changed to a 'keep' close instead - or does the consensus word have a specialised meaning at EngWikipedia?
(4) Thanks for your super-fast and helpful response. (edit conflict) BushelCandle (talk) 14:10 and 14:22, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
BushelCandle, using the his pronoun a second time after I told you that I am female is offensive. Frietjes (talk) 14:11, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
There were edit conflicts and I had no intention whatever to offend you. Once again, my apologies. BushelCandle (talk) 14:26, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
BushelCandle, "keep" and "no consensus" are practically the same since they both result in the template being kept. however, upon further inspection, I will probably renominate this given the outcome of this discussion initiated by Jrcla2 for the corresponding basketball template. Frietjes (talk) 14:36, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
I appreciate that the result may be identical - a keep - but surely there was a crystal clear consensual outcome to the (very brief) discussion. Since your rationale of "not used" fell by the wayside as soon as the template was used and there was no other rationale proposed for deletion before the discussion was closed, unless "consensus" truly does mean something very different from the normal use of the word, there was a crystal clear consensus to keep! BushelCandle (talk) 14:43, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
given the chance to expand my rationale, I would have linked to this discussion. I was not asked to comment after the template was added to dozens of pages. Frietjes (talk) 15:51, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
That's all well and good, but does not alleviate my bafflement. There was a clear consensus in the discussion that was not accurately summarised by the close. Unless telepathy was involved, the closer could not take into account what you might have chosen to post, invited or not. How were you deprived of a chance to expand your rationale in the week before the close and, perhaps more pertinently, how could the closer know that you had other potential objections? BushelCandle (talk) 16:31, 14 July 2017 (UTC)

I usually close discussions as "no consensus" when the facts have changed in the middle of the discussion. However, I revised my closing statement in this case to something more verbose. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:38, 15 July 2017 (UTC)

Infobox comparison

I recall that someone, you I think, made a template for comparing infoboxes and their parameters. What was it, please? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:41, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

(tps) Andy Mabbett, I typically (1) use templatetiger to generate the lists of parameters, then (2) sort the the lists, and (3) take the lists of parameters generated by that script and use diff locally on my computer to see the differences. there is also this tool which performs a similar function. I imagine one of those tool maintainers could automate this process, but I don't know if anyone who has done this yet. Frietjes (talk) 16:58, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
Thank you. Those may be useful, but are not what I was thinking of. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 20:37, 19 July 2017 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: I have some perl scripts that I used for comparing templates, but they are not very user friendly, and they don't have a web interface. If you would like me to compare a particular pair of infoboxes, I would be happy to help. Otherwise, I would suggest asking around some more. I was aware of the template tiger tool, but I hadn't seen the other one. If I recall, template tiger used a cached database report? so the queries may be using stale data. Or, things may have changed since the last time I tried it. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:59, 19 July 2017 (UTC)

Troopers

Your unexplained change of logos for the Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps replaced their new logo with the old, outdated logo and resulted in the speedy deletion of the corps' currently used logo. GWFrog (talk) 09:48, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

GWFrog, if you read the file history here, you will see that the image was moved to a new name since the old name "File:Index 03b1.jpg" was meaningless. There was no change in the image, just a move to a new file name. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:53, 25 July 2017 (UTC)

Hi. I wanted to know what you meant by "broke the templete" for Template:Asus. Thanks, Bindydad123 (talk) 01:17, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) The template was listed in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls. This error category means that you made a coding error, re-using an argument (in this case "group11" and "list 11") more than once, hiding at least part of the template. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:51, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Kappa Alpha Order

Hi Plastikspork,

What was your thinking behind using ECP on Kappa Alpha Order? I can't see how this fits within the protection policy. The article hadn't been semied for a while. Was the action was intended to prevent a recurrence of the edits by an auto-confirmed editor on 15th of August? A warning would appear to be more appropriate, and, if problems persisted, a block.

Yaris678 (talk) 08:00, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for changing it. I hope people are watching for the KKK vandals, which is basically the majority of the edits to the article in the past year or two. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:48, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Template:Batsmen with a ODI batting average above 40

I was wondering if you would reconsider your deletion of Template:Batsmen with a ODI batting average above 40. I asked the closer to reconsider, and am waiting to hear back before it goes to deletion review. I think the discussion should be relisted to allow it to be posted at Wikipedia:WikiProject Cricket. This is a six-year-old, well used template and should not be deleted without a more thorough discussion. StAnselm (talk) 23:31, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

MLB playoff brackets

Hey, I had codified these into templates, and I just now discovered they were deleted (requested by @User:Frietjes), what was that all about, there were plans to incorporate those into the articles eventually, but was never done....Z.I. Barbour (talk) 00:03, 25 September 2017 (UTC)

Zacchaeusbarbour, per the discussion here, there is no need to put the brackets in templates when you can put the brackets directly in the articles. if you need to share the bracket between more than one article, you can use LST. for example, see how the bracket in 2010 Major League Baseball season is shared with 2010 in baseball. Dash script

Hi Plastikspork. Ever in your debt for the occasional maintenance of this significant script, I wonder whether you have time to stop it changing hyphens to dashes in ISBN numbers. Ohconfucius received a note about this today, and emailed me that it's been disabled pending a fix. I don't know who disabled it (You're the last to edit it, back in May.)

Thanks heaps for your work!

Tony (talk) 11:26, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Plastikspork, sure. Here's the dash script alone applied to the article that was subject of that note on Ohconfucius's talkpage. It does change the hyphens wrongly. Tony (talk) 11:49, 3 November 2017 (UTC)

"Navbox subgroup" vs. "navbox|subgroup"

cf. this edit.

Why is SporkBot changing {{navbox subgroup}} into {{navbox|subgroup}}? Both templates' documentation suggests the former syntax, and while {{navbox subgroup}} refers to the latter syntax for certain exception cases (more than 20 lists in the subgroup), neither template actually documents this syntax. It is Really Really Dumb™ to have a situation where someone follows the syntax given in a template's documentation only to have a bot come along immediately afterwards to change it, and to change it to undocumented syntax to boot. IOW: either the docs need to be updated to reflect SporkBot's understanding, or SporkBot needs to stop making these changes. Also, Frietjes, please fix whatever it was you were trying to do here (that discussion is incomprehensible currently, and I'm guessing it is the de facto impetus for this SporkBot task). Grumpily (or is it always "grouchily" this close to christmas?), --Xover (talk) 10:32, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Xover, thank you for pointing out my completely horrible mangling of that thread. I had apparently not disabled some of my template clean up scripts before editing that thread. I have reverted those edits, and updated the documentation for {{navbox subgroup}} to indicate that it's deprecated and functionally equivalent to something better. we are working on making these two invocations exactly the same, but there has been some technical problems in the implementation. Frietjes (talk) 15:28, 5 December 2017 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Thanks! And you may also want to update the docs for {{navbox}} as that still refers to {{navbox subgroup}}. Incidentally, those docs aren't real clear in general regarding subgroup and child, so "make docs more better" should probably be on a todo list somewhere (with an appropriate relative priority, of course). Cheers, --Xover (talk) 16:10, 5 December 2017 (UTC)

Per: New Years/Time on Wikipedia my opinion

Good Morning, @Plastikspork:

Thanks for making action upon the consensus, it seemed like hardly anybody was interested in this besides Davey 2010 & JMC You mentioned I could "userfy it if I wanted to." So, based on that, I feel we could leave the New Year's Template deleted, (always try again next year!) however I would like to userfy the "Time on Wikipedia" Template, I feel it could be reused/recycled somehow if I put enough thought to it. Thank you in advance!

I just wanted to ask if it's okay if I merge the two templates together? The new template will look like this, I initially presented the possible template structure as part of the discussion. Template:Immigration to Sri Lanka will have to be deleted. (120.144.137.108 (talk) 08:23, 8 January 2018 (UTC))

I would suggest discussing it on the talk page and/or with the other participants in the discussion. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:32, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Plastikspork. (120.144.5.249 (talk) 03:02, 9 January 2018 (UTC))

Template:Andy Muschietti

was recreated, so should probably be either (a) re-deleted or (b) have the earlier history undeleted. Frietjes (talk) 21:57, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

Issues haven't been addressed, G4'd. Primefac (talk) 22:45, 18 January 2018 (UTC) (talk page stalker)
Primefac, another article was created after the TfD, so it seems like the original rationale no longer applies. Frietjes (talk) 22:50, 18 January 2018 (UTC)
I was under the impression that three links was not sufficient. Primefac (talk) 00:00, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
Primefac, with the title article, it's four links. as far as I know, there is no official policy. Frietjes (talk) 00:29, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
I'll defer to Plastikspork on whether it should be re-litigated at TFD, though I will note that you did suggest that one potential outcome was re-deletion. Also, I wasn't implying that the three-link issue was policy-related, but expressed at the TFD. Primefac (talk) 14:52, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
I'd say we can view it as a soft redelete at this point. If someone complains, we can reconsider. But, until that happens, I would let sleeping dogs lie. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:20, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Hi thanks for the fix up on Alan Tudge mp page. just wondering if you have the time I am just wondering can you update all new minsters page with their new titles. Leftwinguy92 (talk) 00:57, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Bot parameters question

Okay, before I file a new BRFA and get yelled at by Frietjes for duplicating bot processes - what are Sporkbot's parameters as far as orphaning templates goes? Does it check only deleted templates, or does it actively patrol the Holding Cell "To orphan" section? Primefac (talk) 14:19, 26 January 2018 (UTC)

Primefac, the last time I checked, you just have to tell Plastikspork, or wait until Plastikspork sees the template in the holding cell. he probably is checking both the WP:Database reports/Transclusions of deleted templates report and WP:TFD/H, but it looks like he was off WP for about 12 days (until yesterday). another method that might work would be to (1) have it blank on substitution (e.g., blank the actual transcluded content) and (2) add {{subst only|auto=yes}} to the noinclude section to put it in Category:Wikipedia templates to be automatically substituted. but, I don't know if AnomieBOT will refuse to do that, and it would probably leave newlines behind. Frietjes (talk) 14:28, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, that's generally correct. It was automated for a short period of time, but I had to disable the automated feature after the bot malfunctioned. I could probably have a fully protected page with a list of templates to orphan, and have the bot parse that page. But, until that happens, you basically have to ping me or wait until I notice the template in the holding cell. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:19, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I suppose a lack of automation when "removing templates" is concerned is probably a good thing. I know there's no deadline etc, but I guess I'm just wondering if it would make sense for my bot to also have a "template remover" task, for times when you are away for extended periods; that, or set up a TPE page for orphaning and reenable automation. Primefac (talk) 02:33, 27 January 2018 (UTC)
I don't see any problem with having a second bot approved for removing templates. There have been others in the past, with varying success or failure. Probably the worst was KarlsenBot or Erik9bot or maybe Andrea105Bot. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 04:28, 1 February 2018 (UTC)

Refine closure?

Thank you for closing Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2018_January_24#Template:IUPAC_spelling_US. One suggestion. Wouldn't it be better to refine the scope, to prevent future detail discussions? The proposal uses "etc." throughout, and has target templates Category:Varieties of English templates and Category:Use English templates, and the source topics (to be merged) are "IUPAC spelling" and "Oxford spelling". Must say, if fear of confusion only exists on my side here, that refinement would not be needed ;-). But: it's MOS topic. -DePiep (talk) 10:17, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

I know, I know, should've asked first

Dear, @Plastikspork:, I wish and hope that wherever you are, you;ve had a good day up until now. I shall DISLCLAIM though that there's nothing technically wrong. I just came to say I was addicted by your WP:AUTOED script, applied it to all of my script-pages, and then remembered that the description page said nothing about rights, so I thought I better come ask you before it's too late! I really do want so say   Sorry!. I really do think it's a nice addition though.

I don't know if this is appropriate, but as a compensation, you can you can use any of my templates free of charge. Just kidding, that's what Wikipedia is.

Hope you could make me understand or forgive me for using your template without permission. Sincerely, User: Zanygenius(talk page) 22:23, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

No problem. You don't need permission to use the scripts. Just make sure you inspect your edits before saving, and don't violate the spirit of WP:COSMETICBOT. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:14, 16 February 2018 (UTC)

GA

Hi, you made a change here to "fix duplicates" [9] but it triggered a fail of the article that was on hold, I don't really understand the edit summary - was this intentional or can the review continue? Seraphim System (talk) 17:54, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

(tps) @Seraphim System: before the edit, there were two values for |status= one with |status=onhold and one with |status=onreview. this was caused by the previous edit here which added |status=onhold without removing |status=onreview. when there are duplicate parameter values, the second one overrides the first one, and hence the |status=onhold was being ignored. the edit by Plastikspork removed the duplicate that was being ignored. and then this edit removed the second one as well. Frietjes (talk) 19:38, 19 February 2018 (UTC)
Ok, so I guess it wouldn't be a problem to reopen the review then, if it wasn't about the merits of the nomination. The reviewer and I just wanted to make sure.Seraphim System (talk) 19:56, 19 February 2018 (UTC)

Template:Lit

Hey, it would be great if this template served as a redirect to Template:Literal translation since the template only renders it as "lit.". Also because I can't create the right-protected template, and "literal translation" is too long to type. ----Kailash29792 (talk) 14:56, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

SporkBot bug - misinterpreted 'location' in reference

In this edit the bot seems to have seen |location= in a {{cite book}} and misinterpreted it as an infobox key. I've fixed the article and I don't imagine the issue comes up often. I'm just reporting it in case it's something you can prevent easily. Mortee (talk) 23:26, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Question re Sporkbot edits

I've noticed Sporkbot is making edits like this one to old DYK nomination pages. Is there anything that will be gained from these edits? These closed nominations are never likely to be edited again. Most will never even be looked at again. Thanks. EdChem (talk) 05:26, 5 March 2018 (UTC)

Sorry for the bad edit summary, it was supposed to say "per TfD outcome for *mp". Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:34, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. If the template is going to be deleted, then these edits are necessary. Though the decision to delete the template and require 30,000 pages to be edited and produce who knows how many diffs with issues strikes me as poor... EdChem (talk) 13:35, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
It happens more often that you'd expect (the edits, not the issues in the diffs). Primefac (talk) 13:42, 5 March 2018 (UTC) (talk page stalker)

Translating citations

Hiya, what script do you use to translate citation templates? I have a few more translations in tow so would be helpful czar 13:35, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Also, it missed a few date conversions that then threw date errors. Those were handled properly before the conversion to English. czar 13:44, 5 May 2018 (UTC)
It looks like I am using an old version of User:Frietjes/citetrans.js. At some point I was having problems with WP hosted scripts, so I copied that one into my own local Greasemonkey. I should go back to using the maintained one, since it may have better date translation code. But, I don't know for sure. I usually check to make sure the dates are fully translated, but it looks like I missed that one. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:19, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

I am presently working with Mr Martin Gbabos, the producer of the movie "A Soldier story" to help improve and add to the film Wikipedia content. However, every input I have made is often deleted. We need to update the information as we are preparing for the part two coming out soon. Kindly advice me on the necessary step to take to keep my content intact. ThanksVickywrite (talk) 12:19, 22 June 2018 (UTC)

  • There are multiple problems here. The most obvious are the promotional aspect and WP:COI. But Vickywrite, you may also not continue to add unsourced content to Wikipedia. Nor ought an article on an upcoming movie be grafted onto the present article about its precursor. Mainly, I'd advise against coming here to promote an endeavor with which you're engaged. archive index parameters

Regarding this edit, do you know something about how this is supposed to work? By my reading, the template itself does nothing at all, but Legobot is supposed to come by occasionally and looks for it. Legobot uses PyWikiBot to read the page and parses the parameters itself. The code I looked at does not handle mask1=, mask2=, but does appear prepared to accept multiple mask= parameters. I haven't been able to get it to work and Legotkm is on vacation for another couple of weeks. Any input from more experienced hands would be welcome. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 02:39, 17 June 2018 (UTC)

GregU dashes script

Hey! I'd like to inquire about the dashes script by GregU. After he left Wikipedia roughly six years ago, you have been the only one to maintain it further two years. A major flaw in the script that I observed is that it does not work alongside AutoEd (sometimes vice versa), so created an altered version of the script that comes primarily with its independence from AutoEd, other changes include generic JavaScript fixes (=== instead of ==, where required, for example), unnecessary regex escapes removed (\{ -> {, and so forth) and overall syntax style makeover. Hence I wondered if you'd be fine transcluding my version of the script into GregU's, so that everyone could benefit from it? If you are uncomfortable with the regex or code style changes, I can resort to restoring the old version and only changing the primary function to work independently from AutoEd. Cheers! Lordtobi () 13:48, 28 July 2018 (UTC)

diff might be appropriate. --Izno (talk) 14:02, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Indeed, though due to the formatting changes it might be a bit hard to follow through on; I split the individual operations into single edits. Formatting was first everything else comes after that. Check this diff for the actual changes. Lordtobi () 14:09, 28 July 2018 (UTC)
Lordtobi, I will have a look at your changes, but probably the best solution is for you to maintain your own fork for any major changes. This way, you can make changes whenever you want, and not need to ask me to implement the changes. If users notice major problems, we can direct them to start using your code instead. However, I do agree that unhooking it from AutoEd is a good move. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:38, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

Not Curly

Hi, I have a query re some bio edits that your bot has recently done, such as this. I'm assuming that if we fix the typo that I'm patrolling for you meant to say "<!-- Must be a Public Domain image -->"? But if so I don't understand why CC0 or CC-BY-SA aren't acceptable and it has to be PD. ϢereSpielChequers 15:17, 7 August 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) I don't think the parameter "PD_image" actually exists, and you will find that it produces nothing regardless of what you insert into it. As far as I can tell, the bot just substed the old template wherefore the comment was taken over from there. To address your question specifically, PD-only imagery usually only applies to BLP articles; Anderson is deceased so this should not apply. Lordtobi () 19:01, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, but I've never hear of a PD only policy. I get that Fair Use doesn't apply on BLP articles, but of course CC-BY-SA is fine for images on BLPs. ϢereSpielChequers 19:50, 20 August 2018 (UTC)

Orphan template

Hi Plastikspork, is SporkBot still available to orphan a template? I am trying to delete Template:Incomplete per Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Holding_cell. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:02, 11 October 2018 (UTC)

MSGJ, looks like it was taken care of by JJMC89 who blanked it and added it to TemplateSubster force which subsequently allowed AnomieBOT to orphan it with with these edits. that is an alternative path to having a template orphaned. Frietjes (talk) 12:53, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
So he has - thanks JJMC89. I guess the only disadvantage of this method is that you don't get a proper edit summary to explain why the template is being removed from each page. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:06, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
MSGJ, true. I imagine that Anomie could add the ability to parse a comment after the template link on that page which would trigger an additional edit summary. but, I don't know if it's worth the effort. in this case, if someone navigates to Template:Incomplete the reason is in the deletion log. Frietjes (talk) 14:15, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
If there's a shortage of bots to do this work, I'd rather create a new task that specifically does the work instead of trying to have TemplateSubster vary its edit summary. Anomie 15:24, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Yea, I realized that the edit summary was not ideal. I could also write a bot task to handle TfD orphaning. — JJMC89(T·C) 16:02, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
Both SporkBot and PrimeBOT are available for orphaning, and both use template-specific edit summaries. Anomie's bot is useful for mass substing in general, but if there really is a need to have a specific edit summary (which often there isn't) then hit up one of us to do it. Template:Meghan Trainor songs

Can you restore this template that was deleted two years ago when Trainor was a new artist? She has released one studio album and two live albums since, thus creating much more material. Ariana Grande has released a similar amount of music and she has one. Thanks.--NØ 12:52, 25 October 2018 (UTC)

oppose per Adele songs, Selena Gomez songs, ... (@Azealia911, Chasewc91, SNUGGUMS, and Woodensuperman:) Frietjes (talk) 14:26, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Not sure about restoration. Depends how many songs and such actually warrant their own articles. Snuggums (talk / edits) 14:38, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
  • There is no need for this - template was deleted by discussion and all the entries sit quite happily at {{Meghan Trainor}}. Two navboxes for this content would not aid navigation. --woodensuperman 14:39, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Also note that {{Ariana Grande songs}} was recently split from {{Ariana Grande}} without discussion. I've reversed that now, as two navboxes are excessive there too, and there is absolutely zero justification for the split. --woodensuperman 15:37, 25 October 2018 (UTC)
Did not expect this to devolve into some super controversial discussion with multiple editors being unnecessarily pinged. Anyways, of course if consensus suggests the template shouldn’t be restored it will stay that way.NØ

Old edit by bot.

Hi, There was a note on OTRS about this. I'm not sure where SporkBot got it's info from at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Burrendong_Dam&diff=next&oldid=590836866 - namely the | dam_volume = {{convert|6345|m3}}. The PDF from the Aussie Gov clearly says 1,118,000 Megalitres (as the article says) - that's 1188000000M3, somewhat adrift from the 6345! It was noticed by a dam engineer - 6435m3 is not a lot of water. Rather than just change it, I thought I'd ask, as if the bot made one error, then there may be more... Ronhjones  (Talk) 01:59, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Ronhjones: The volume was added in this 2013 edit by Rangasyd. SporkBot just renamed the parameter from |volume= to |dam_volume=. — JJMC89(T·C) 03:08, 4 November 2018 (UTC)
@JJMC89: Ah, well, I'll just fix it then. I was worried it might be more than one page affected. Ronhjones  (Talk) 15:10, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

Cuisine of Turkey

So - I thought about doing what you just did when I alphabetized the navboxes at Basbousa but now I'm really confused because the navbox in the current version of the article is still titled "Cuisine of Turkey" but in the previous versions it is titled "Turkish Cuisine" [10] ... Seraphim System (talk) 01:18, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

User:Seraphim System, I believe the article is Turkish cuisine and we usually title the navbox to match the article title. The "Cuisine of Turkey" works as a redirect. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:19, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Restore template

Would you mind restoring the page Template:Tlttu and Template:Tlttu/doc. It wasn't created in violation of a block or ban as I wan't banned when creating it and I didn't officially agree to not create templates. Of course I can't edit templates now so I can't recreate it. So the reason it was deleted was invalid. I think it's useful as it fills a hole in the chart at Template:Template-linking_templates#General-purpose_formatting. It's useful as it lets you see the message even when hovering over the link. I hope you consider restoring the templates. Thanks, – BrandonXLF (t@lk) 20:57, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Template:Mountain dogs

A tag has been placed on Template:Mountain dogs requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section T3 of the criteria for speedy deletion because it is an unused duplicate of another template, or a hard-coded instance of another template. After seven days, if it is still unused and the speedy deletion tag has not been removed, the template will be deleted.

If the template is not actually the same as the other template noted, please consider putting a note on the template's page explaining how this one is different so as to avoid any future mistakes (<noinclude>{{substituted}}</noinclude>).

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. Null edits by bot?

While looking at a deleted draft I saw this. Was that deliberate? Huon (talk) 20:04, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Looks like the bot was doing a "null edit". I believe, you used to be able to save a page with whitespace at the end of the page. But, this is not possible anymore (or not possible through the bot interface). So, when the bot performed a null edit, the trailing whitespace was stripped. Seems harmless, but could be confusing if you didn't understand what is going on. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:10, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Puzzled by your edits

So, you made a series of edits to Montane grasslands and shrublands and Palearctic realm that confuse me. I saw that Template:Australasia montane grasslands and shrublands was proposed (on Dec 17) and deleted (on Dec 25). But I'm not sure why that would trigger these edits. I reverted the edit to Montane grasslands and shrublands, but then saw the other edits. Before more reversion, I thought I would ask you. —hike395 (talk) 07:40, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

For some reason, I thought the entire collection had been nominated. I have fixed this error. Navboxes should be at the bottom of the page since they are not shown on mobile. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:04, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Re: Navboxes. I see what happened. These templates were originally designed to generate lists of ecoregions (within list articles). Then, in 2011, Look2See1 got confused and started using them as navboxes, without obeying the formatting in WP:NAV. Last year, some editors started converting some of these to use {{Navbox}}, without realizing the original intent of the templates. So we are left with some of these templates being floating mid-article navboxes, others not.
What I've done is:
  1. Subst'ed pre-navbox versions of the template into Montane grasslands and shrublands and Palearctic realm, to preserve list formatting.
  2. Cleanup the navboxes ([11],[12]) so that they only contain bluelinks and are easy to navigate.
If you happen to come across any problems like this, let me know and I can clean them up. Thanks! —hike395 (talk) 14:18, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

Weird stuff going on in Rio de Janeiro location maps

The location map image in Rio de Janeiro metro station articles (such as Uruguaiana Station, Engenheiro Rubens Paiva Station and Pavuna Station) seems to be shrunken. I'm not sure what's going on; I've taken a cursory look, and can't see anything wrong in the source. I'm not a map template expert, but I would imagine that this might be the result of some sort of metadata error somewhere. However, I'm unable to find the source of the problem. Could you possibly take a look at this? -- The Anome (talk) 11:01, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

I posted a possible clue to an answer here. Let's try to keep conversations in one place. It seems like Template talk:Infobox station might have been a good place to bring this up. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:02, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

Template:Double image and Template:Triple image

A TfD discussion you closed from 2013 (Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2013 November 7) resulted in a merge of {{Double image}} and {{Triple image}} into {{Multiple image}}, but instead of being merged, were turned into wrappers without documentation and tagged with a deprecation template. America's Next Top Model (season 10)

This article has a Makeovers section, which you denied long ago as WP:OR. It's unsourced (of course, since it's OR). There's a lot of unproductive editing of this section here and in the analogous sections in related articles (by season). This is a waste; it's garbage. Can I or someone just delete these sections? It's going to be section blanking, but justified (WP:RS, WP:OR, WP:POV, and probably others). Sbalfour (talk) 22:32, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

Oops, yes indeed. This one: Northland, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. ww2censor (talk) 19:13, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
(tps) User:Ww2censor, it looks like when RFD created it here the article title was Northland but the text said Northfield. in the next edit the typo was correct in one place, but not in the top sentence. that typo persisted until Plastikspork added the infobox which which probably imported the name from the first sentence (possibly using an automated script). Frietjes (talk) 21:31, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Hey, can you unsalt Template:Image. I intend to use templatestyles with a custom .css and make a responsive image template. You'll probably think I could alternatively ask for TE at PERM but it's too much red tape for me, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ --qedk (t c) 17:34, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Given the deletion rationale, Template:Responsive image might be a better idea. --Izno (talk) 18:14, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
I intend to make it so because of the cross-wiki aspect as well. A lot of wikis are used to using the Image template to format instead of the [[ ]] format, so having it for both reasons is better than making another one. --qedk (t c) 18:36, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
QEDK have you seen {{Scalable image}}? it generates images that scale as you change the size of the browser window. I concur that {{image}} is too generic a name. Frietjes (talk) 18:38, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
So there is a template! That certainly helps. No need for another one then ofc. --qedk (t c) 18:44, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for your edit to Draft:Foreign policy of the administration of Shinzō Abe. As I recall, Useddenim, the template in question assembles individual graphic tiles together to create the desired sign. Contrast that to the other templates that just call a single SVG file that is the desired sign already. There exists a full library of the UK's motorway signs on Commons already, so there's no need to assemble tiles together anymore. Really, there's no reason to use text formatting techniques to mimic a road sign when the graphics already exist. If a graphic is missing, there are easy templates to create the missing file in about 5 minutes of work. If there's a large batch missing, there's a bot on Commons that can use the templates and proper typefaces to create the missing SVGs. Imzadi 1979  17:51, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
That's irrelevant. Useddenim (talk) 17:56, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

problematic template in project namespace

Hello Plastikspork, as I see, you are still working with templates, so I want to ask you something about an old substitution template. It is Wikipedia:WikiProject Canada Roads/Saskatchewan/Template:Saskatchewan Highways which you moved into project space after the deletion discussion Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2012 January 31#Template:Saskatchewan Highways that I have found in the link list. In the edit history, I see substantial fixes in 2012, but not very much has happened there afterwards.

SriMesh (who also isn't very active now anymore and made their last edits back in March) wrote in the 2012 discussion "I think it would also be useful from project space, or it could be in my sandbox if no one else wishes to use it." And I think this would be a good idea for the template now after 7 years, because it is still not working and therefore noone can use it anyway. They should either fix it there or leave it unfixed in their own namespace. See my test edit, what errors this template still produces when it is substituted. There are really a lot of template use instructions in this substitution, but there exists no doc page for it. Everything is in the template and is being substituted. In this way, it can't be used. Either the template has to be fixed or moved into user space, because a broken template which is permanent in project space, but never useable, is not good. Or it is time for another deletion discussion. Can you please do anything with this long and useless template? Greetings --2A02:908:D83:E460:216:CBFF:FEAD:FF9 (talk) 13:28, 10 August 2019 (UTC)

I tested the script in my users-ace and changed the right to extendedmover and I was able to see the page. Didn't quite function as I'd hoped - I was sort of looking for something along the lines of how User:Evad37/XFDcloser works - eg at pages where there's a requested move, it being able to detect the suggested page move titles (or allow the user to enter the move targets and it performs all the actions at once). E.g. a window could pop up/clicking massmove at the top could take you to the page and you can enter the source title and destination title? Not sure how to code this, but it might be doable? Hello, I was wondering if you knew where the references are located at for Template:Infobox US university rankings? I have a request to update a reference, but cannot for the life of me, figure out where we can edit the references. Thanks, Corky 08:12, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Communes of Phnom Penh Province

A tag has been placed on Category:Communes of Phnom Penh Province requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

Liz Read! Template for Deletion - Result

Plastikspork: Thanks for concluding the discussion for deletion of the template [here]. I had nominated two templates in that discussion. However, seems like you missed deleting one of the templates within the nomination. Could you delete Template:WikiProject Education of Nepal as well? (Note: All the votes were in favour to delete both templates). Thanks! Bishal Shrestha (talk) 01:32, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

Sure. It wasn't deleted because the {{tfd links}} template wasn't used, but I fixed it. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 01:50, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

API limits for page moves

I'm trying to cobble together a mass move gadget for English Wikisource (they have some special requirements in that regard), and in that connection am trying to figure out…

What is the rate limit for page moves through the API? I don't see any rate limiting code here, apart from serialising the requests. Can it really be that there isn't a rate limit when moving pages thought the API? Given the really rather strict limits of 8/16 per minute when moving pages manually I'd find that rather surprising.

I also wonder where the "up to 100" limit on moving subpages comes from, if you should happen to know. Moving 1000 pages at a time will be the average case here, so if there's a hard 100-pages limit lurking somewhere that'd be nifty to know about in advance.

In any case, I'll definitely be stealing some of your code for this project, so many thanks for that! Cheers, --Xover (talk) 13:57, 23 September 2019 (UTC)

Xover, for User:Frietjes/masspurge.js, I added a 3 second wait to avoid edit rate limits. if you want to be nice to the server, even if there are no limits, you could probably do something similar. Frietjes (talk) 18:48, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
@Frietjes: Thanks for the tip. It’s always useful to have example code to crib from! But in this instance I don’t really care abut being nice to the servers (that’s the WMF’s problem); the issue is more that if there is a rate limit in effect my script would fail in the middle of a thousand-page move, leaving a monumental manual cleanup job. The pages in question are one-per-physical-page of a scanned book, and managed by mw:Extension:ProofreadPage with transclusions and other complicating factors, so the failure mode is much worse than pages simply existing under the wrong name for a bit. --Xover (talk) 19:43, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
Xover, it looks like the script generates a list of move failures, regardless of the reason for failure. you should be able to then copy-paste the fail list to run it again if it was an edit rate limit that caused the failure. Frietjes (talk) 19:46, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
Xover, I have never run into any move limits, but that may be because I am an admin? In any event, what Frietjes said should be correct concerning how failures are logged. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 23:15, 2 October 2019 (UTC)
Ah, thanks. The script's users will be admins (I'll add a check specifically for that: moving works like this is not something we would want just anyone to do), so that's not an issue. The pages in question are interconnected, so it's of some importance that they're treated more or less as a unit; as close to either all succeeding or all failing as I can manage to get it.
In case anyone's curious, the way ProfreadPage works is that for every file in the File: namespace (either local or on Commons) where the file is some kind of paged format (PDF, DjVu, even multipage TIFF) it creates virtual pages in the Page: namespace that are displayed in a two-column layout with the image of the scanned book page on the right and a textarea on the left. If the original file contains a OCR text layer the textarea is pre-populated with that text that can be edited to correct OCR errors and add markup for formatting. A special page is then created in the Index: namespace containing bibliographic info and a mapping from physical page numbers (the pages from the PDF) and logical page numbers (what's printed in the book), and based on this the content of the Page:-namespace pages are transcluded into mainspace (usually into separate mainspace pages for each chapter). It's a moderately complex system, but it gives you traceability back to the original scanned text (for reasons analogous to WP:V here), while providing a modern and readable electronic edition that can be read online or converted to ePub etc..
In any case, it's rarely necessary to move these pages since the reader-visible name is the mainspace page name, and that can be reasonably managed manually. But sometimes we want to standardise naming for works in a series, and sometimes pages need to be shifted (say the original scan was missing a page and the missing one had to be inserted, meaning all the following Page:-namespace pages have to be shifted to make room). And since most works are anything between a few hundred to a thousand+ pages, that's not something you want to do manually.
Thanks for the help both of you! --Xover (talk) 10:56, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Brexit sidebar / UKinEU merge discussion

Hi Plastikspork. You just closed this template discussion as no consensus. You wrote Feel free to continue the discussion elsewhere, and I would like to do that. But I am relatively new to wikipedia and its procedures, so seeking advice about how to best do that. In the discussion, I proposed moving most Brexit-stuff to the Brexit sidebar, and other editors welcomed it. However, my proposal came late in the discussion, and were mixed into an otherwise black/white choice between merge and don't merge. What would be the best way for me to proceed? ― Hebsen(previously Heb the best) (talk) 08:50, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Hebsen, in my opinion, your best choice is to start a discussion at Template talk:United Kingdom in the European Union and post a pointer to the discussion at Template talk:Brexit sidebar. if you want more input, you can post a pointer to the discussion in various other places like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Politics of the United Kingdom, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject European Union, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United Kingdom, ... some of these will be more active than others. you can also ping participants from the prior discussion using {{ping}}. (talk page stalker) Frietjes (talk) 13:20, 3 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I considered that as well as starting a new TfD-discussion. I reckoned that would be a more visible place, but now looking at it, it seems that it only for merge and delete, and this is neither. ― Hebsen(previously Heb the best) (talk) 20:28, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

Please adjust page protection

Please adjust the page protection settings on Template:Sample. As discussed, there is clear community consensus that ECP should not apply for "high risk templates" and nothing under WP:ECP applies to this template. Buffs (talk) 15:28, 17 October 2019 (UTC)

Template:Documentation/start box too. Buffs (talk) 15:35, 17 October 2019 (UTC)
  • Hi Plastikspork, just reminding you about this request. I've been correcting these protection levels for Buffs where admins are obviously inactive, but you seem to be around and I don't want to edit your protections to these templates if you have a good reason for setting them at this level. Can you let us know? Cheers. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 21:57, 25 October 2019 (UTC)
@Frietjes: ah, I see. I saw that Plastikspork was active so I didn't look at the links. Template:Sample is a redirect, AFAIK redirects shouldn't be set to TE-protection, but unless someone objects it's probably fine. The target, {{Audio sample}}, is already set to TE-protection so nothing to do there. {{Documentation/start box}} was set back to semiprotected, which seems like it's also fine. @Buffs: FYI. Speedy deletion nomination of Arif Ansari

Hello Plastikspork,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Arif Ansari for deletion, because the article doesn't clearly indicate why the subject is important enough to be included in an encyclopedia.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

Edits to multiple image template in the Orson Welles article

Hi there. In your two edits to the article on Orson Welles (December 8, December 9), you removed essential parameters from the multiple image template in the "Relationships and family" section. The result was that the images spanned the page instead of aligning vertically on the right side at a fixed width. I've replaced the parameters for the second time. The multiple image template is used several other times in the article, so I'm not sure why this section is being singled out. — WFinch (talk) 11:53, 9 December 2019 (UTC)

Opera templates

I would like to talk about Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2019 December 3#Template:Mascagni operas and more generally about how related discussions should be considered when determining consensus. The close in question was definitely within closer's discretion as everyone in the discussion wanted it deleted, however there was also another more widely attended discussion on the same subject at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2019 December 7#Template:Adams operas. If I were to close it I would probably close it as keep with no predjudice against renomination as the second (already closed) discussion was, referring to WP:CONLEVEL. I know it mainly refer to policies and guidelines, but a discussion with many times more participants would also be {{community consensus on a wider scale}}. I would just want to know your perspective in order to become a better closer in the future. Cheers! ‑‑Trialpears (talk) 00:02, 15 December 2019 (UTC)

Please keep the bot out of user sandboxes

A mischief-making unregistered user edited my suggested sources list in my sandbox today. After I reverted that edit, your bot came in and reinstated the mischievous edit.

The point is, in my sandbox this is just a list of suggested sources, some of which are very likely duplicated. I know this already. It will not go into mainspace like this - I have not even edited the list into the actual article, and may well delete half of it anyway. I am currently working on this article, and your bot is a nuisance. So please keep the bot out of user sandboxes. Thank you. Storye book (talk) 20:02, 30 December 2019 (UTC)

The bot isn't removing duplicate citations, it's marking duplicate parameters which do not appear in the text. For example, if you have {{cite web|url=Some URL 1|title=Some title|url=Some URL 2}} the citation will only use Some URL 2 and complete ignore the Some URL 1. Marking the first Some URL 1 as a duplicate helps editors find/correct mistakes in the citations without removing any information. Pages with parameter duplication, like this one, appear in Category:Pages using duplicate arguments in template calls for clean up. You can also see the errors if you use _show preview_ in edit mode before saving. The errors will appear in a box at the top of the page. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:13, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Deletion of example code

Hi Plastikspork, I just noticed that you deleted Template:Wd/doc/examples. You're right that it was unused in the sense that is wasn't transcluded or linked to, but it still had a useful purpose. I deliberately moved the examples to that subpage because including them on the documentation page directly caused considerable load time at Module:Wd and Template:Wikidata. Instead, I substituted the examples into the documentation page and kept them on the subpage for later updates and to be able to refresh the example results (through substitution). Therefore, could you please restore Template:Wd/doc/examples? Thayts ••• 22:33, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

Regarding a recent close

Just wanted to comment on your recent TfD close of Module:Check for deprecated parameters. I found it quite surprising that a 2-1 in favor of merge, was closed as "no consensus" without even relisting. If the issue was the syntax, there are numerous examples of templates being placed in the /Holding cell#to review to work out this exact issue. Not finalizing a code is never a valid reason not to merge, it's just a tactic people use to derail the discussion when they have no real arguments other than WP:IDONTLIKEIT. --Gonnym (talk) 07:15, 17 January 2020 (UTC)

Templates for discussion/deletion

Hey Plastik. A quick question/comment. I have only just spotted Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2012_May_11#Unused_A*/meta/color_and_A*/meta/shortname, of which [[Template:Ashfield Independents/meta/shortname]] was one of those amongst a great swathe for deletion. In this specific instance, Ashfield Independents links to the election results box at Ashfield (UK Parliament constituency) so it is used, and the deletion would cause some (albeit minor) consequences. The linked article is at Ashfield Independents. I wondered if this template is "safe" or will it be deleted in the near future? There may have to be a discussion at the UK politics section to decide what to do. Many thanks, hope this isn't too confusing! doktorb wordsdeeds 09:16, 10 May 2020 (UTC)

Doktorbuk, it should be fine to recreate any of those as long as they are used. by my reading, that sequence of discussions was about cleaning up the massive number of orphaned templates with the understanding that any that were used could be recreated. which is why you can see there are many which are no longer red links. (talk page stalker) Frietjes (talk) 15:45, 11 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks

Hello S. Thanks for sending your bot on this task. I looked at it and, as the template was only on user talk pages, all I could think was that, even with a detailed edit summary, all those editors are gonna come down on me like a ton of bricks - or maybe feathers :-) Cheers and stay safe. Wrong source

Hello, I am disturbing you about an issue. I am Thothr from Turkish Wikipedia. There is a user who gives wrong information by using the wrong sources. As I noticed, this user has the same attitudes in English Wikipedia as well. This user, Frat070699, adds the sources by copy-paste without knowing what the sources are actually about. So, I wanted to warn you. The sources exactly exist but there is no connection between text and sources. As an example of this situation, on the page of Emirate of Kilis has “Han, Şeref (Çev. İbrahim Sunkur) (2016). Şerefname. Van: Sîtav. p. 249. ISBN 978-605-66520-1-1” as the source. But “Han, Şeref (Çev. İbrahim Sunkur) (2016). Şerefname. Van: Sîtav. p. 249. ISBN 978-605-66520-1-1” should be added instead of. As a historian, I noticed this sadly. And I thought that I must inform you. Thank you very much for taking some time and reading.--Thothr (talk) 19:01, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

Massmove

Hi Plastikspork, sometimes I use massmove script, created by you, on pt.wiki, but I don't know the reason why, it stopped to work. When I try to acess Special:Massmove, it says that the page doesn't exist. The same is happening on en.wiki. Mr. Fulano 🐸 02:38, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Mr. Fulano, if you look at the end of the User:Plastikspork/massmove.js script, you will see that it checks to see if you are in the sysop or extendedmover groups. I don't think you are in either of these groups on this WP. It looks like you are in the sysop group on pt.wiki? But, I suppose it could be using a different name. I will see if I can have it issue a more helpful message when the script has loaded, but the wgUserGroups test fails. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:00, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Hi Mr. Fulano, I added a second "error" page when the wgUserGroups test fails. When it fails, or when it succeeds, it will now say Your user groups are: followed by a list of groups. Can you tell me what it says for you on en.wiki and on pt.wiki? Of course, on pt.wiki it looks like you are using pt:Usuário:Mr. Fulano/massmove.js so you would need to re-copy the en.wiki one there to get my changes (or import from here :)) Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:14, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Yes, I'm a sysop there and the name of user group is the same. I tested the new code, here appeared for me an error message, as I don't have the rights to use the script, but when I tried on pt.wiki, it still saying that the page doesn't exists. And I tried to copy the code or import, but the problem still the same. Mr. Fulano! Talk 22:07, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Hi Mr. Fulano, I figured it out (tested in pt:Usuário(a):Plastikspork/common.js). The name of the page is Especial:Massmove or Especial:MassMove on pt.wiki, not Special:Massmove or Special:MassMove. I could probably make this a parameter that the user can set outside the script, but for now, I have just added the other two options to my script here, so you can import it there. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 22:49, 25 May 2020 (UTC)
Now it is working, thanks so much! Mr. Fulano! Talk 22:57, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

@Ohc on the move and Ohconfucius: They made changes so that only "Interface Admins" can edit user-js pages. You can find the list of "Interface Admins" in Special:ListUsers/interface-admin. Only you and interface admins can edit your personal js pages. But, the AutoEd version did have my changes. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:25, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

Vorbee, I am happy to help. You can adjust the parameters if the bot is archiving too much (or too little) or too often (or not enough). Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:55, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

User:Mikeac1, if you look at the edit history, using the "diff" links, you can see which editors made which changes. In this case, it looks like it was some IP editors who made the changes that you don't like[16]. The bot just removed duplicate parameters in template calls[17]. Thanks! Financial crisis of 2007–2008

Why did you do this revert? It looks as though this editor has put a lot of work into that (although it would have been better if he/she had created an account for themselves). CitizenEd (talk) 15:59, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

CitizenEd, most of it was replacing news sources with blogs, and changing https links to http, basically undoing the hard work by User:Matthiaspaul. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:04, 8 June 2020 (UTC)

Did you use a script on my sandbox?

Hi, I noticed you edited my sandbox where I was working on a translation to fix the French templates in it. Did you use a script to do that? Emflazie (talk) 01:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Emflazie, your page was generating a lot of links in WP:Database reports/Transclusions of deleted templates/1 and/or Special:WantedTemplates. Usually, people welcome help with translating foreign WP articles into English. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:32, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Plastikspork for the help, there were a lot of issues with the templates when I brought it over, so it's much appreciated. I was wondering if you used an editing script for that, and if so what is it? Emflazie (talk) 13:49, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Emflazie, about half of it was by User:Frietjes/citetrans.js but another half I did with search/replace. I know that User:Frietjes is always improving User:Frietjes/citetrans.js so she might be able automate more of my edits to that page. Or, if you see any mistakes, she can probably make changes to the script. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 13:54, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Plastikspork, I was wondering if someone made something like this! Thanks for the tips. Emflazie (talk) 14:04, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Re: Infobox mountain

Hello Plastikspork. Hope you are doing well. Just dropping a note in case you missed the ping. When you have some free time, would you be able to assist with this please? Best wishes, Rehman 15:11, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

User:Rehman, there's a lot to read there, with proposals and rejected proposals and new proposals. Can you just give me a basic summary of what you want me to do? Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:27, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
Sorry I should have been clearer. You can safely ignore the long discussions - everything below is basically the consensus for the topmost section/tables. In the topmost section, you'll find two collapsed tables. If you could help with those renames/mergers, it would be very helpful :) The support code for the new parameter names are already coded in the template. Rehman 17:03, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Hi! You deleted and protected this thing, but then undeleted it again. The deletion seems to have been a good call, as the image appears (to me) to be a derivative work created purposely to infringe the copyright in the original image, so I wondered: What made you change your mind? Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:55, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Justlettersandnumbers, I had originally deleted it as a "repost", but upon further inspection, I realized that it wasn't exactly the same because it was using a different image. So, I restored it and figured that if the new image was deleted, this one would be deleted by G8. I am not an expert on copyright for logos, so I will defer that to the experts. The fact that there are so many on the transcluding page makes it seem to me like a wider discussion about all of them would be useful. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:23, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Plastikspork – I'm nothing like an expert in that area either, I can tell you. I was thinking of re-deleting it, but I think you're right, it can wait until we see what happens with the image. And yes, wider discussion needed! Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 19:50, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Infobox redesign implementation assistance?

Hi, I proposed at an RfC (Wikipedia:WikiProject Radio Stations/2020 infobox redesign proposal) a redesign of {{Infobox radio station}} and {{Infobox broadcast}}. There is consensus to move forward. I have the new templates ready at User:Raymie/Infobox radio station revamp and User:Raymie/Infobox broadcast revamp.

There are several breaking changes, so when the new templates are placed into template space, almost all transclusions of both templates, some 25,000 in total, will need updating to reflect the parameter name changes at User:Raymie/Infobox radio station revamp/Guide.

I also have about 100 transclusions of the current userspace template name for radio and less than 10 of the current userspace template name for TV that will need to be normalized.

How feasible is this to do, and have I come to the right place? Raymie (tc) 19:23, 16 July 2020 (UTC)

Raymie, I can have my bot do the parameter renaming in all transcluding articles. I just need to file a WP:BRFA and get it approved. The safest way to proceed is to (1) add the new syntax as an alternative to the old syntax, but where both are functional, (2) add tracking to find all the pages using the old syntax, (3) have the bot change the articles, (4) wait to make sure the edits were not reverted, (5) remove the old syntax and use standard unknown parameter tracking to find any problems. I have another BRFA open right now, but I can write up another one. Just let me know if there is something beyond the standard parameter renaming. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 12:41, 17 July 2020 (UTC)
Forgive me if I'm being a bit slow, this is by far my largest effort of this type. So basically, you'd have the new parameter names added into the old template, change out the old parameter names, change the template code, then use tracking? There are two things I'd be interested in potentially adding, particularly to the radio templates, that aren't included, but again...I'm all new to this. Raymie (tc) 17:48, 17 July 2020 (UTC)

How to Fix References on Page

Hi Plastikspork, do you know how to fix the reference errors on the Bushido page? When I add the page name it doesn't show up correctly. For example: <ref name="Fujimura", page 215/>, what is the correct way? Other than that, I'm working on some paragraphs. - Artanisen (talk) 21:51, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Hi Artanisen, first, you have to put everything inside the quotes or the backed software is going to complain. Second, there are basically three methods (1) you can create a new citation with {{harvnb}} with the shortened information, (2) you can use {{sfn}} with the shortened information, (3) you can use <ref name="Fujimura"/>{{rp|215}} which used the {{rp}} template to indicate the pages for the prior reference. I have sorted out the errors in the page using the first method, but feel free to use a different method. Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:54, 2 August 2020 (UTC)
Alright, I will check it. Thanks for the help. - Artanisen (talk) 22:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox legislative election

Hello. As you helped out with the query earlier, I was wondering if you could work out how to allow this infobox to embed others in it. I have tried implementing in the sandbox, but only got it to partially work. It does seem to work if you embed it in {{Infobox election}} to start with (see here) but not if embedding in itself (here). Also, even when it does work in {{Infobox election}}, the headings don't appear as they should in the child version. Cheers, Number 57 17:14, 18 September 2020 (UTC)

Hi, I just launched a TfD on ME-announce and it was !voted Delete, so I'm a bit puzzled that you've moved it to the above page rather than just deleting it outright? User:Chiswick Chap, I was going to delete it, but then noticed that it was split from Wikipedia:WikiProject Middle-earth/Announcements so did a history merge instead which wouldn't disrupt the content of old talk pages. But, now that I look at the old talk pages it's just a header so it shouldn't be a problem to delete. So, I will do that shortly. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:01, 15 October 2020 (UTC)

我的印象是,等我把翻譯好的文章發表的時候,這個格式{ill|活性成分|en|active ingredient}} 就有問題。

可否請您可以指點一下,為何會利用這樣的{ill|活性成分|en|active ingredient}}格式?

Dear Plastikspork,

Thank you very much. But I checked here in Taiwan, and confirm that the  : Template:Link-en does exist for Chinese character version.

Thanks, anyway.

Edward-Dean Museum & Gardens

@Plastikspork: User:SporkBot recently made a change to the Edward-Dean Museum & Gardens. References in the article use newspaper sources. One of the newspapers is Vol. 114, No. 192. I had previously placed both of these under the "issue" parameter, but another bot moved the "114" to the volume parameter, and deleted the ", No. 192". I left the 114 as the volume parameter, and added back the 192 as the "issue" parameter, then SporkBot deleted the issue again. The Template:Citation rules for newspapers states that volume and issue are both appropriate parameters for a newspaper source. Is SporkBot working incorrectly, or is there some other way I should enter these parameters? Thank you.OvertAnalyzer (talk) 20:30, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

@OvertAnalyzer: Your edit introduced true duplicate parameters in both cases. SporkBot correctly removed both of them. Please review the wikitext and rendered page to assure yourself that all citation details are still present. --Izno (talk) 21:26, 24 October 2020 (UTC)

User:Adigabrek, I probably removed your page from Special:WantedTemplates by translating some missing templates. The Special:WantedTemplates lists non-existing templates that are being transcluded, but, only includes the first 5000 (up to P at the moment). There has been an effort to fix entries in the list so that we can see all the broken templates in article space (including ones after P). To make this goes faster, we have been cleaning up entries in user space as well. These are usually typos or stuff that has been cut-and-paste from another language. Thanks! I made a mistake and include the date in a citation a second time, I copied it directly from the source which wrote the date in UPPERCASE. Hello. Hope you are well. Just checking if you were able to look into SporkBot 8's task, discussed here? Feel free to let me know if there is anything confusing, or if you need help with anything from my end. Thanks again. Rehman 05:24, 26 October 2020 (UTC)

I am hoping to start this weekend. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:27, 5 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you! Rehman 15:29, 7 November 2020 (UTC)
@Hike395 and Rehman: I have completed most of the code, just need to code up the "language" part, but otherwise the code is basically done. For the language parameter conversion, I plan to have it do nothing when it doesn't know how to convert the language. Before I unleash it in article space, could you provide some examples with a variety of different challenges? In particular, examples that could result in duplicates as listed in the bot task description and different combinations that would trigger the different subdivisionX_type parameters. The bot is smart enough to detect when it is generating duplicate parameters, but I would like to code it to do the right thing in those cases. I started a page with examples for conversion at User:Plastikspork/mountain. Please add to that list if you see any case that's missing. I will have the bot work on converting those and show you the results for approval. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:15, 13 November 2020 (UTC)
Hi. Thanks for this. Yes, we'll get some examples and add it to that list. Cheers, Rehman 05:00, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
@Hike395 and Rehman: See this edit by the bot. If this looks good, let me know and I will start working on articles. If you see any problems or would like to make any changes, let me know and I can tweak the code. Also, please feel free to add more examples if you don't think the current set of examples cover everything. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:32, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll take a look. I think it's important to try the examples in Template:Infobox mountain/testcases and Template:Infobox mountain/testcases2, just to make sure we don't break anything. — hike395 (talk) 21:55, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
I made a before/after page here. I'll go through it later today to make sure the visual changes were intentional. — hike395 (talk) 16:58, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
The one thing I noticed is on Example 2: the bot stripped the <small>...</small> from the argument given to |pronunciation=. This makes the English re-spelling have a different font size than the pronounciation itself (which uses {{IPA-gd}}, which produces small text). Can we not strip the <small>...</small> from |pronunciation=?
I can generate more examples for the bot to try out of the testcases. If I created new User subpage(s), would you be willing to test the bot on them? — hike395 (talk) 14:11, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
hike395, Yes, I saw the small tag removal as well. I copied some code that I used for reformatting Infobox river articles and that was still in there (per MOS:SMALL). I will take that line out before I run the bot again. Yes, if you create a page with tests I would be happy to run the bot on your tests. I am in no rush to start running the bot in article space. I would rather have the bot nearly bug free than have to go back and fix a bunch of edits. By the way, should I have the bot use a collapsible list when there are many entries being merged into a single field (e.g., borders). Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 16:09, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
Thanks, Plastikspork. Re collapsing, we had a lengthy discussion at Template talk:Infobox mountain#Combining parameter series, and concluded to not collapse the parameter. Rehman 04:12, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

(unarchiving thread) @Plastikspork:, could you kindly run your bot on User:Hike395/test mountain bot and User:Hike395/test mountain bot 2? Thanks! — hike395 (talk) 16:30, 24 November 2020 (UTC)

hike395, sure. One obvious problem is the duplicate |native_name_lang=, but my bot would take care of that in a second edit as part of another task. I will see if there is an obvious way to fix it as part of the initial edit. Let me know if you see other problems. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:55, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
One problem I found on the Brienzer Rothhorn test case: |region_type= got converted to |region2_type=, but it should be |subdivision2_type=. I'll look at the test 2 next. — hike395 (talk)
The region2_type was a typo in the code which is now fixed. Thanks for spotting it! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 21:50, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
I've noticed a design flaw and a MOS issue that we can fix:
  • In the Catskill Mountains test case, there is both a label for State and a label for States/Provinces. This is due to a flaw in how we specified the bot run. We should use the following logic (which was used in the infobox back in March):
  • If region_type is used, then copy its value to |subdivision2_type= and ignore the following.
  • If region and (not region1) and state, then |subdivision2_type=Region
  • If region and (not region1) and (not state), then |subdivision2_type=State/Province
  • If region1 and state, then |subdivision2_type=Regions
  • If region1 and (not state), then |subdivision2_type=States/Provinces
  • In the Alps test case, the country list with flags looks quite ugly. The use of flags in this field is heavily discouraged by MOS:FLAGINFOBOX. Would it be possible for the bot to replace use of the {{flag}} template with its first parameter? That would be much nicer (and obey the MOS, to boot).
Thanks for all of your help, Plastikspork! I don't think we could have done this by ourselves. — hike395 (talk) 22:49, 24 November 2020 (UTC)
hike395, see the last three examples in this edit. I wish there were an easy way to substitute something to strip the image from the flag. I am using Module:ISO 3166 at the moment so I can convert stuff like {{UAE}} as well, but I don't know what the fallback should be if that fails. Let me know if you want me to re-test anything or run new tests. When we get to the point where I run the bot in articlespace it does log the diffs for all the changes it makes for auditing purposes. I can quickly grep the log file to find particular edits. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 00:02, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Re: flags --- I would suggest that it's better for a bot to preserve data than to enforce the MOS: if you think there's a risk of data loss, then I wouldn't implement an edit.
Given that we're still finding bugs, I want to test even more. I've put 10 most-visited mountain/volcano articles at User:Hike395/test mountain bot 3. Would it be possible to run the bot on those, too? I'm hoping that we won't find any more issues, then I'd feel more comfortable unleashing the bot on 25,000+ articles. — hike395 (talk) 16:38, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
hike395, I ran the bot on that page, fixed a bug with pipes inside of wikilinks, and ran it again. I can disable the "convert" templating if you want. I disabled the de-flagging for now, but I can have the bot return a list of all pages with flags in the "country" as it runs. I am not sure about the State/Province label for Mount Ararat is the best. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 17:48, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
I think at least a separate list for pages with flags would be nice. Because, whether with the bot's help (to remove) or not, articles must comply with MOS:FLAGINFOBOX. Rehman 08:17, 26 November 2020 (UTC)

I agree with Rehman. Instead of the bot making a substitution, I would propose that any infobox with a flag template gets placed into a tracking category Category:Pages using infobox mountain with flags. Perhaps any infobox where the bot would use {{convert}} should be added to Category:Pages using infobox mountain with unusual coordinates? Once those tracking categories are created, semi-automated editing can be used to make sure we don't lose data.

in I didn't see any other bugs in User:Hike395/test mountain bot 3. I'm not sure how serious the "pipes inside of wikilinks" bug is? Plastikspork: I can keep generating test cases, if you think we can find more bugs. What do you think? — hike395 (talk) 21:38, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

hike395, here are the first 10 changes. I plan to review these before doing more. Let me know if you see any problems! Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 18:44, 15 December 2020 (UTC)

Template:Infobox route map

Was the template replaced before you deleted it, or are there ~250 pages with a missing template? AlgaeGraphix (talk) 05:27, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) You can see that there are no transclusions by looking at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Infobox route map. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:58, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
AlgaeGraphix, you can find the bot edits here. Many could probably be improved since the infobox was being used to show very little information, or the infobox could be moved to the main article. Thanks! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 14:43, 4 January 2021 (UTC)
