NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

You are casting aspersions and making personal attacks

You are casting aspersions and making personal attacks in talk pages and in edit summaries, and assuming bad faith on my part openly.

You are accusing me of "trying to undermine Catalan articles", "disruption", "vandalism", "cherry picking", "anti-Catalan", " push your own POV", " Your latest game, trying to delegitimise Catalonia by changing minister to 'regional minister'". [1] [2] [3] [4].

In addition, I have reminded you that the talk pages of the articles are to talk about the content and how to improve the pages, not about the users per WP:TPYES

I am saying you that my intentions are good,[5] but you are not listening to me.

You said [6]: You have lost the right to WP:AGF. I will continue to call you out. I make no apology for this.

Please, reflect on what you are saying. I am going to continue assuming good faith on your part. Let's talk and make things clear. You are misunderstanding me.

I do not understand how you can consider that adjusting the term correctly to regional ("regional minister" instead of "minister") is "delegitimizing" Catalonia (!?). The only explanation I find is that you consider that Catalonia is not a region (of Spain). That is a very important concept error on your part.

You said [7]: This edit was bordering on vandalism. See my edit summary: (Trimmed inaccuracy, Catalonia is not a "sovereign state") It was just an error of interpretation of the infobox parameter. You reverted my edit [8] and I thanked you [9].

I have no problem in recognizing my mistakes.

You said here [10]: "This edit where you removed Catalonia but left three other Spanish regions which used the same unverifibale source shows how anti-Catalan you are." (This is as absurd as if I accused you of lack of neutrality, bad faith and "anti-Spanish" because you are only making templates and improving the lists of ministers for Catalonia, but not for the rest of the regions / autonomous communities of Spain.) It is very easy to understand if you look at my contributions of that day [11]:

  • 17:07, 14 June 2018 (diff | hist) . . (-149)‎ . . Catalonia ‎ (Unsourced and inaccurate.)
  • 16:41, 14 June 2018 (diff | hist) . . (-406)‎ . . List of country subdivisions by GDP over 100 billion US dollars ‎ (Trimmed. Not supported by the sources)
  • 16:24, 14 June 2018 (diff | hist) . . (-1)‎ . . Catalonia ‎ (→‎Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) and Franco's rule (1939–1975): Adjusted inaccuracy)
  • 16:23, 14 June 2018 (diff | hist) . . (-8)‎ . . Catalonia ‎ (→‎Etymology and pronunciation: Trimmed inaccuracy)
  • 16:23, 14 June 2018 (diff | hist) . . (-36)‎ . . Catalonia ‎ (Trimmed inaccuracy, Catalonia is not a "sovereign state")

I was correcting the mistake of naming Catalonia as a "country", since it is a region, an autonomous community in Spain. I came to that page and made that edit [12] chaining reviews. I did not notice anything else at that moment, I admit it, but that does not mean anything. Now that you have pointed out to me, it is when I have seen that there were more Spanish regions, I thought that Catalonia was the only one, and I apologize for the error. Anyway, if every time we enter a page we have to correct each and every one of the inaccuracies, we could never edit. This is a team effort and we complement each other.

I hope we can continue to collaborate calmly and positively and that you realize and assume my good faith. And please, use our talk pages for this and not the articles talk pages WP:TPYES.

Best regards. --BallenaBlanca 🐳 ♂ (Talk) 04:19, 20 June 2018 (UTC)

@BallenaBlanca: I'm sorry but your actions and behaviour in Catalan articles are contrary to what you've claimed above. And I will continue to point this out.
If you want to change my view of you, I suggest that you start making some positive contributions to Wikipedia. In my six months editing Spanish articles I have found that there is a huge deficiency in English Wikipedia on Spanish topics, particularly when compared to Spanish Wikipedia and Catalan Wikipedia. I suggest that you try to reduce this deficiency rather than scouring Wikipedia articles to delegitimise Catalonia and the Catalan people.--Obi2canibe (talk) 12:23, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
So, are you saying you will continue making personal attacks, like this new message from today [13]? I can not make you change your mind because you are not judging me with neutrality and you are assuming bad faith, whatever I do, no matter what I explain. --BallenaBlanca 🐳 ♂ (Talk) 21:20, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
@BallenaBlanca: You are exhibiting all the signs of civil POV pushing. As I've stated before, I will continue to challenge your atrocious behaviour. I'm sorry if you perceive that as personal attacks.--Obi2canibe (talk) 20:52, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Native names on infoboxes

@Obi2canibe: Hello. Noticed you'd undone my recent edits where I've moved the native names in tamil out of infoboxes of politicians' articles. Could we possibly stick to one policy here? While I don't dispute the native name field is a valid one, what is the point in duplicating it in both the infobox and the lead? Not only that, it clutters up the top of the infobox terribly. I've more or less followed this on the Sinhala politicians' pages I've edited; I may be wrong, but I don't see any attempt to follow this policy you're following on any pages other than those of SL Tamils.

On a related note, I also wanted to ask why so many of these pages have leads that make it a point to note the ethnicity of the individual: a trend I've noticed a LOT on the pages of Sri Lankan Tamils. What is the relevance here? Wouldn't a simple "he/she was a Sri Lankan politician/artist/whatever" do? - ක - (talk) 20:32, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

There is no policy violation here as the field exists. I can't answer for all articles, just the ones I've worked on where I try to use all available fields on infoboxes. If native names are missing in Sinhalese biographies, perhaps you should add the native names, like you've done to infoboxes for organisations (ministries, universities) rather than removing native names from Tamil biographies. There is nothing against having native names in the lead and infobox.
There are no policies which prohibit the use of ethnicity in the lead.--Obi2canibe (talk) 23:07, 15 July 2018 (UTC)
Yes, I did put native names in the ministry infoboxes, but if you'll remember, this was some time ago- I haven't edited those pages since we last had a conversation on you already looking after said pages and the need for consensus on what to do with them (which we still haven't finalized on, btw). As for universities, you'll notice that my most-edited recent article, SLINTEC doesn't have these- like I said, I think the native names clutter up the top of the infobox, push down the infobox info on screen, and since we're putting in the native names in the lead anyway, there's little point making the extra effort. I've recently started moving them to the lead in the pages I edit. This isn't the Sinhala or Tamil wikipedias- anyone that's here should be able to read the title of the article or the infobox and identify the topic of the article without native names.
On both the ethnicity thing and this, however, I think it would be helpful if you addressed why my concerns aren't valid rather than quoting policy. Many things are within policy parameters, the question we're here to decide is what works best. My concern is that we jump on any Sinhala nationalists that attempt to sneakily edit articles to highlight or bias stuff to be pro-Sinhalese, but any attempt at reining this in on pages such as the Tamil ones is met with resistance, as is the case here. You and I both know the former at least is true, given the shitshow we've seen on the SLPP article, for instance. I'm not accusing you of being a nationalist- I'm simply asking we run WikiProject Sri Lanka better than the lunatics in Parliament run the country. Right now, there seems to be one WikiProject LK for the Sinhala articles and another for the Tamil ones. We don't need ethnicity in the lead- it's in the infobox, and serves no purpose (that I can see) other than satisfying people's desire to see the Tamil community stand out here on Wikipedia.
On your suggestion- I'm not, for one second, going to consider doing the same to the Sinhala articles. I'm not interested, and will say the same thing I'm saying here to anyone who tries. May I also point out that so far, in all the conversations we've had on here, I've had to do all of the compromising- you've never agreed to anything I've said so far. It gets hard to talk to people when you're met with a brick wall of denial or refusal every time. - ක - (talk) 06:53, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
Infoboxes and the lead aren't mutually exclusive. Their purpose is to convey the same information, a summary of the article, in different formats - infoboxes in a diagram form and the lead in a narrative form. Therefore you will often see duplication of content between the two. For example, MOS:OPENPARABIO requires the lead of all biographies to contain date of birth and death. But this information is also found in the infobox. Should they be removed from the infobox because they are replicating content in the lead? A will written article will have a substantial lead and will duplicate much of the content included in the infobox.
Native names are important to readers and editors and that is why all the major types of infoboxes contain them. The issue with cluttering infoboxes is due to editors using the full/formal name rather than the common name. Browser settings will also impact on the font size. There is no cluttering in the eight politician articles from whom you removed the native names. I don't consider this to be major issue.
Wikipedia policies are there for a reason - without them there would be anarchy. I don't consider using ethnicity as pandering to nationalists. Quite the opposite. It is Sri Lankan/Sinhalese nationalists who want to suppress Tamil identity by removing all reference to it. This was the sub-text of another editor wanting to remove ethnicity from the infobox. Sri Lankan/Sinhalese nationalists would be overjoyed if Tamil ethnicity and Tamil native names were removed from English Wikipedia. And this is what you propose.
I believe you have accused me of being a "brick wall" previously. This is not correct. I have tried to accommodate you where possible. For example, at the discussion at WP:LK I have made a suggestion in respect of your issues with ministry articles and I have not objected to the removal of MP suffix from former MPs articles even though I disagree with it.
The above issues and those being discussed at WP:LK are trivial and frankly a waste of time. Editors need to use their time more productively. And if we try to bring consistency by removing information rather than adding information, all Sri Lankan politician article will look this joke of an article. --Obi2canibe (talk) 21:56, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
Great, so we maintain one set of policies for Tamil articles and one for Sinhala ones just to prove some political point. My suspicions were correct about your motives here, it would seem. You've just been objected to by other editors for this absolute need to divide as many Lankan articles as possible by ethnicity already, and yet here we are. As for the "you sound like a nationalist" line.... heh, yeah, ok. Trying to compare DOB (which takes up a minor amount of space in an infobox) and the list of native names at the top of the infobox is comparing apples and oranges. Also, no one's trying to remove references to Tamilness- it's just this forced, in-your-face, "Sri Lankan Tamils have to be identified by ethnicity" nonsense I'm against here. Even if we follow this brand of logic, surely you can see that you're playing into the nationalists' hands? Pretty much every non-Tamil Lankan biography says "he/she was a Sri Lankan poet/chef/whatever", but the Tamil ones always begin with "he/she was a Sri Lankan Tamil...". By trying to stand out, you yourself add fuel to this divisiveness. I will ask again- what is the value of constantly stating ethnicity? The danger here is, if you're allowed to go on doing this (and I won't stop you. God knows the Wikiproject is disjointed enough to let this kind of thing slide, especially when its being done by an established editor such as yourself), you lose the authority (although I doubt that'd actually stop you) to call out the nationalists on the other side of the fence when they too start shoehorning in irrelevant bullshit about Sinhala Buddhism, as we see happen every damn day. I just warned another buffoon for mucking around with the Colombo article, where he seemed to object to the reality that the capital isn't dominated by Buddhists and kept vandalizing the demographics data.
Lastly, if you find us all trivial, why bother joining in? The MP thing wasn't my debate or argument- you agreeing with my point there means absolutely nothing, since both the pro- and counterarguments weren't being made by me. I never offered a solution, just agreed with something someone else suggested; I pitched in an opinion then moved on to my real concern, which was the Ministry articles. As for that article you linked to, I see no relation to what we're discussing here. All I see is a stub that was created for no reason, not a sizeable article that has been winnowed to nothing as you seem to imply. And to suggest no one's doing any work adding to articles... well, that's your perspective.
The brick wall has struck again. I'll just walk away and do something productive with my time, which doesn't involve manipulating articles to further my political views. I just want it on record that I think this is a dangerous, and frankly moronic route to go just to spite the racists on the other side. - ක - (talk) 17:28, 19 July 2018 (UTC)
It's always a pleasure discussing things with you Jesuschristonacamel because I feel better about myself afterwards. Thanks!--Obi2canibe (talk) 11:02, 22 July 2018 (UTC)

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months. (Purge)

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

June backlog drive

Overall the June backlog drive was a success, reducing the last 3,000 or so to below 500. However, as expected, 90% of the patrolling was done by less than 10% of reviewers.
Since the drive closed, the backlog has begun to rise sharply again and is back up to nearly 1,400 already. Please help reduce this total and keep it from raising further by reviewing some articles each day.

New technology, new rules
  • New features are shortly going to be added to the Special:NewPagesFeed which include a list of drafts for review, OTRS flags for COPYVIO, and more granular filter preferences. More details can be found at this page.
  • Probationary permissions: Now that PERM has been configured to allow expiry dates to all minor user rights, new NPR flag holders may sometimes be limited in the first instance to 6 months during which their work will be assessed for both quality and quantity of their reviews. This will allow admins to accord the right in borderline cases rather than make a flat out rejection.
  • Current reviewers who have had the flag for longer than 6 months but have not used the permissions since they were granted will have the flag removed, but may still request to have it granted again in the future, subject to the same probationary period, if they wish to become an active reviewer.
Editathons
  • Editathons will continue through August. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.
The Signpost
  • The next issue of the monthly magazine will be out soon. The newspaper is an excellent way to stay up to date with news and new developments between our newsletters. If you have special messages to be published, or if you would like to submit an article (one about NPR perhaps?), don't hesitate to contact the editorial team here.

@Koavf: Yes, I noticed that they were deleted because there was only article. That was unnecessary - there are plenty articles that could populate the years categories.--Obi2canibe (talk) 19:28, 21 August 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.13 18 September 2018

Hello Obi2canibe, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

The New Page Feed currently has 2700 unreviewed articles, up from just 500 at the start of July. For a while we were falling behind by an average of about 40 articles per day, but we have stabilised more recently. Please review some articles from the back of the queue if you can (Sort by: 'Oldest' at Special:NewPagesFeed), as we are very close to having articles older than one month.

Project news
As part of this project, the feed will have some larger updates to functionality next month. Specifically, ORES predictions will be built in, which will automatically flag articles for potential issues such as vandalism or spam. Copyright violation detection will also be added to the new page feed. See the projects's talk page for more info.
Other
Moving to Draft and Page Mover
  • Some unsuitable new articles can be best reviewed by moving them to the draft space, but reviewers need to do this carefully and sparingly. It is most useful for topics that look like they might have promise, but where the article as written would be unlikely to survive AfD. If the article can be easily fixed, or if the only issue is a lack of sourcing that is easily accessible, tagging or adding sources yourself is preferable. If sources do not appear to be available and the topic does not appear to be notable, tagging for deletion is preferable (PROD/AfD/CSD as appropriate). See additional guidance at WP:DRAFTIFY.
  • If the user moves the draft back to mainspace, or recreates it in mainspace, please do not re-draftify the article (although swapping it to maintain the page history may be advisable in the case of copy-paste moves). AfC is optional except for editors with a clear conflict of interest.
  • Articles that have been created in contravention of our paid-editing-requirements or written from a blatant NPOV perspective, or by authors with a clear COI might also be draftified at discretion.
  • The best tool for draftification is User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js(info). Kindly adapt the text in the dialogue-pop-up as necessary (the default can also be changed like this). Note that if you do not have the Page Mover userright, the redirect from main will be automatically tagged as CSD R2, but in some cases it might be better to make this a redirect to a different page instead.
  • The Page Mover userright can be useful for New Page Reviewers; occasionally page swapping is needed during NPR activities, and it helps avoid excessive R2 nominations which must be processed by admins. Note that the Page Mover userright has higher requirements than the NPR userright, and is generally given to users active at Requested Moves. Only reviewers who are very experienced and are also very active reviewers are likely to be granted it solely for NPP activities.
List of other useful scripts for New Page Reviewing

  • Twinkle provides a lot of the same functionality as the page curation tools, and some reviewers prefer to use the Twinkle tools for some/all tasks. It can be activated simply in the gadgets section of 'preferences'. There are also a lot of options available at the Twinkle preferences panel after you install the gadget.
  • In terms of other gadgets for NPR, HotCat is worth turning on. It allows you to easily add, remove, and change categories on a page, with name suggestions.
  • MoreMenu also adds a bunch of very useful links for diagnosing and fixing page issues.
  • User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js(info): Installing scripts doesn't have to be complicated. Go to your common.js and copy importScript( 'User:Equazcion/ScriptInstaller.js' ); into an empty line, now you can install all other scripts with the click of a button from the script page! (Note you need to be at the ".js" page for the script for the install button to appear, not the information page)
  • User:TheJosh/Scripts/NewPagePatrol.js(info): Creates a scrolling new pages list at the left side of the page. You can change the number of pages shown by adding the following to the next line on your common.js page (immediately after the line importing this script): npp_num_pages=20; (Recommended 20, but you can use any number from 1 to 50).
  • User:Primefac/revdel.js(info): Is requesting revdel complicated and time consuming? This script helps simplify the process. Just have the Copyvio source URL and go to the history page and collect your diff IDs and you can drop them into the script Popups and it will create a revdel request for you.
  • User:Lourdes/PageCuration.js(info): Creates a "Page Curation" link to Special:NewPagesFeed up near your sandbox link.
  • User:Writ Keeper/Scripts/deletionFinder.js: Creates links next to the title of each page which show up if it has been previously deleted or nominated for deletion.
  • User:Evad37/rater.js(info): A fantastic tool for adding WikiProject templates to article talk pages. If you add: rater_autostartNamespaces = 0; to the next line on your common.js, the prompt will pop up automatically if a page has no Wikiproject templates on the talk page (note: this can be a bit annoying if you review redirects or dab pages commonly).

Orphaned non-free image File:A. Thurairajah.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:A. Thurairajah.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 17:24, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

Project updates
  • ORES predictions are now built-in to the feed. These automatically predict the class of an article as well as whether it may be spam, vandalism, or an attack page, and can be filtered by these criteria now allowing reviewers to better target articles that they prefer to review.
  • There are now tools being tested to automatically detect copyright violations in the feed. This detector may not be accurate all the time, though, so it shouldn't be relied on 100% and will only start working on new revisions to pages, not older pages in the backlog.
