Administrators' newsletter – August 2019
News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2019).
Interface administrator changes
|
|
- Following a request for comment, the page Wikipedia:Office actions has been changed from a policy page to an information page.
- A request for comment (permalink) is in progress regarding the administrator inactivity policy.
- Editors may now use the template {{Ds/aware}} to indicate that they are aware that discretionary sanctions are in force for a topic area, so it is unnecessary to alert them.
- Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
- The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.
Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.
Your GA nomination of Hubert William Lewis
Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Hubert William Lewis you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Feel free to contact me with any questions or comments you might have during this period. Message delivered by Legobot, on behalf of Zawed -- Zawed (talk) 08:40, 23 July 2019 (UTC)
- Hey Kosack, I have passed this one as a GA. Good work! From your comments, I got the impression you don't often edit in the military history space so I hope you keep up with it. It is always good to see editors branching out into new fields. I started off by improving some South Korean football pages of all things before drifting into military history. If you haven't already, check out the Milhist Wikiproject page and enter the Lewis article into the writing contest. Cheers, Zawed (talk) 08:37, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

I did it because I know that as soon as I start to criticise your article a whole load of others will descend on the article to tell you what a bad person I am, and how you should ignore everything I say. But at least it might attract some useful reviews along the way. :-) Eric Corbett 19:47, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- @Eric Corbett: Ha, well the FAC has already garnered one more edit than it did the first time I nominated it so that's a start! Kosack (talk) 19:53, 6 August 2019 (UTC)
- I'm sure it can be got through FAC this time. Eric Corbett 20:01, 6 August 2019 (UTC)

I have unreviewed a page you curated
Hi, I'm Ipigott. I wanted to let you know that I saw the page you reviewed, Alice Evans (footballer), and have marked it as unpatrolled. If you have any questions, please ask them on my talk page. Thank you.
Message delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

- @Ipigott: What's the reason? I didn't curate it either, I created it so it was automatically done. Kosack (talk) 08:12, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi there, Kosack, sorry to cause you any concern. This was of course a mistake which I corrected five seconds later. I was working outside and did not see the green shading on the curation options. It's always difficult to see who gave approval. I see you have recently been adding quite a few biographies of Welsh women. It's good to have your contributions. You may be aware that WikiProject Women in Red is focusing on sports until the end of the month. Further coverage of Welch women footballers would be greatly appreciated. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 08:50, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
- Ah I see, OK no problem. Kosack (talk) 09:06, 9 August 2019 (UTC)

Reverting my changes on assists on the Cristiano Ronaldo wikipedia page
Although I can agree with you that my source isn't reliable, why is there a long-standing consensus on assists not being present on footballer's pages? I feel like assists also provide vital information about a player's performance and adding it doesn't make the page too difficult to read. It's also the same with goals being present on goalkeeper's Wikipedia page when most goalkeepers never score a goal. Why isn't there a clean sheets tab?
- I believe the main problem is that assists are both extremely difficult to reliably source and many sources have different definitions of what constitutes an assist. Kosack (talk) 08:46, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
Sure but assist is an official stat kept by both the Premier League and La Liga, so I don't think there's much dispute over what constitutes an assist. It is much easier to note when a player makes an assist compared to something such as chances created. Dps United 08:54, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
- As I said, that's one of the problems with adding assists. What is the Premier League's definition of an assist? There is a good example HERE where three sources have three different totals for more than one player in the same season. There's a relatively recent discussion HERE with links to several other previous discussions on the same topic. You are welcome to open a new discussion at WP:FOOTBALL if you wish to do so though. Kosack (talk) 09:08, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Lukaku FA Cup honour
Hi, first of all sorry for my English but I’m not from UK. Could you tell me a realible web site about the player’s honours? Because Lukaku played 1 game with Chelsea during the 2011/12 FA Cup and so it’s an honour for him. I don’t understand why you don’t agree with me. Thank you and good night! Precisione1982 (talk) 19:03, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi, I believe cup honours are typically kept to players who featured in the final of the tournament or for whom we can provide a source that they received a medal for the competition. Kosack (talk) 19:11, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

Brian Murphy (association footballer)
Hi there Kosack,
With my (+120) edit to the page, I always thought that we have two separate rows to indicate different spells with the same club. The Cardiff section shows he was released then resigned for injury cover so that's when I was thinking these are separate. Iggy (Swan) 13:17, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- Hi @Iggy the Swan:, I believe that it's the norm for players whose contracts run down but are then resigned in quick succession to have it classed as a single spell (as long as there were no other teams in between of course). There was a brief discussion here about it and I'm sure there was a larger one before that but for the life of me I can't find it. Fábio Aurélio and Boaz Myhill are some obvious examples I can think of to demonstrate this as well. Kosack (talk) 13:48, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
- Saying that, I've just come across a more recent discussion which suggests that competitive matches being played in between favours separate spells although the new closing date for the transfer window muddies the water perhaps. Oddly, Cardiff's press release reads like a continuation of his original contract. Kosack (talk) 14:18, 29 August 2019 (UTC)

WikiCup 2019 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished in a flurry of last minute activity, with 454 points being required to qualify for the final round. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with over 400 points being eliminated, and all but two of the finalists having achieved an FA during the round. Casliber, our 2016 winner, was the highest point-scorer, followed by Enwebb and Lee Vilenski, who are both new to the competition. In fourth place was SounderBruce, a finalist last year. But all those points are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.
Round 4 saw the achievement of 11 featured articles. In addition, Adam Cuerden scored with 18 FPs, Lee Vilenski led the GA score with 8 GAs while Kosack performed 15 GA reviews. There were around 40 DYKs, 40 GARs and 31 GAs overall during round 4. Even though contestants performed more GARs than they achieved GAs, there was still some frustration at the length of time taken to get articles reviewed.
As we start round 5, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them (some people have fallen foul of this rule and the points have been removed).
If you are concerned that your nomination, whether it be for a good article, a featured process, or anything else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Fred Keenor scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the Fred Keenor article has been scheduled as today's featured article for October 19, 2019, the anniversary of his death. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/October 19, 2019, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted on or after October 1, 2018, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors up to the day of this TFA. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 06:33, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019
Hello Kosack,
- Backlog
Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.
- Coordinator
A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.
- This month's refresher course
Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.
- Deletion tags
Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.
- Paid editing
Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.
- Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
- Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
- Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
- Not English
- A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
- Tools
Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.
Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.
Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.
DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.
Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings.

FA review?
Hey. I noticed your current FAC nomination, and was wondering if you'd be interested in trading reviews? I'd love to get as much feedback as possible this time around for my nomination, and would be more than prepared to review yours in return. I understand if you don't have the time though. Kind regards, Homeostasis07 (talk/contributions) 00:06, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Sure, I'll try to take a look at your nomination in the next couple of days. Kosack (talk) 05:28, 10 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks for your support. It was very much appreciated. I don't understand why no-one else has been commenting at your article so far, because it's easily the best-written thing currently nominated at FA. All I could do at this point is suggest you keep doing what we did: trade reviews. Find articles you like here and ask their nominator to trade reviews on their talk page. Unfortunately, FAC is currently obsessed with pop culture and military articles. Unless your nomination fits into those two categories, it's unlikely to succeed without a little help (if you catch my drift). I hope things go well for you, and let me know it doesn't. I'd be more than happy to support your next nomination. ;) Homeostasis07 (talk/contributions) 00:30, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Cristiano Ronaldo + Zahin346
At it again I've noticed.
What I think of the following:-
1) Every goal scored by any striker like the Portuguese player would result in at least 1 million bytes to articles whose subject scores plenty.
2) I do not see a 53rd career hat-trick in the source given and I can't think of any notability with this.
3) In Euro 2020, the opening "two matches against Ukraine and Serbia" sentence, this does not directly relate to the player before the injury is mentioned.
4) Not every goal would be notable. With that Serbia 2–4 Portugal result, the third Portuguese goal did not change the result and they were in the lead for all of the second half. Also that was too early for qualification to the finals.
I've seen that you've chatted with this user already and taken it to WP:Football as well. Those points are my views on the problems that the user has done. Iggy (Swan) 10:47, 29 September 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, I was unaware the user had previous form and I agree on those points. The user appears to have a very narrow viewpoint when it comes to Ronaldo unfortunately. Hopefully they can take some advice onboard. Kosack (talk) 10:53, 29 September 2019 (UTC)

- @Amitchell125: That's very kind. I wanted to try and get a major Welsh article to GA outside my usual football work so what better pick than number one on the 100 Welsh Heroes! Admittedly I'm learning on the job with this one though, so thanks for your ongoing thorough and patient review! Kosack (talk) 19:46, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Your GA nomination of Aneurin Bevan
The article Aneurin Bevan you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needing to be addressed. If these are fixed within 7 days, the article will pass; otherwise it may fail. See Talk:Aneurin Bevan for issues which need to be addressed. Bury
Why are people changing the bury fc edits. Bury fc does not exist anymore and does not play at any ground so how can anyone say the still play at a stadium or even exist Tomeggy (talk) 18:40, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- HI Tomeggy, on the contrary, Bury FC still exists, it has merely been expelled from the EFL. It is simply a team without a league right now, an odd situation no doubt, but the EFL does not have the power or ability to liquidate a football club. Bury can still rejoin a league, most likely at the end of the season and still owns whatever assets are registered to the club, including Gigg Lane. Thanks. Kosack (talk) 20:00, 1 November 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019
Hello Kosack,
This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.
- Getting the queue to 0
There are now 809 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.
- Coordinator
Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.
- This month's refresher course
Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.
- Tools
- It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
- It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
- Reviewer Feedback
Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.
- Second set of eyes
- Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
- Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
- Arbitration Committee
The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.
- Community Wish list
There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

DYK for Wales national football team home stadium
On 19 November 2019, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Wales national football team home stadium, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the Racecourse Ground, which has hosted more Wales home international matches than any other stadium, is the oldest stadium in the world still hosting international football fixtures? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Wales national football team home stadium. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Wales national football team home stadium), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Thank you for contributing to Jill Valentine's FAC. You probably had no idea of the sort of quagmire you were stepping into by reviewing Jill's article, but your uninvolved, unbiased critique was exactly what was needed: it genuinely helped clear the air surrounding the article of a lot of its toxicity. I can't explain in words in a barnstar of how appreciative I genuinely am. Just... thanks for all your help. - An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.

Ninian Park scheduled for TFA
This is to let you know that the Ninian Park article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 16, 2020. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 16, 2020, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted on or after October 1, 2018, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:49, 11 December 2019 (UTC)

Freddie Welsh
Hi Kosack,
Unfortunately I'm pretty much retired as a major editor to Wikipedia, and only drop in now and again to clean up vandalism. I'm glad you appreciate the Freddie Welsh article, though I wish it has a wider source of material to back up the claims. There is a little bit of original research in there, pieced by finding inaccuracies in the older material, such as the 'Bon Voyage' photo, which, although labelled in the local Pontypridd museum is obviously wrong if you look at other photos and check his fight dates. Good luck with the application, though several of the books I used were library loan outs and I can't recheck claims. A great article to try to get to GA status.
Hats off my friend. FruitMonkey (talk) 23:55, 17 December 2019 (UTC)
- HI FruitMonkey, sorry to hear you're not as active anymore. Judging by your user page, you have a great catalogue of work. Freddie Welsh's article certainly deserves a GA status, I should be able to cover most of the info with online sources if necessary. Hopefully there won't be too much to worry about, on a run through I didn't spot any major issues. It's a good read. Kosack (talk) 06:42, 18 December 2019 (UTC)
New Page Review newsletter December 2019
- Reviewer of the Year
This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.
Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.
Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.
Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

- Redirect autopatrol
A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.
- Source Guide Discussion
Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.
- This month's refresher course
While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.
