- The Wikimedia Commons app for Android can now show nearby places that need photos. [1]
<maplink>and<mapframe>can now use geodata from Open Street Map if Open Street Map has defined a region and given it an ID in Wikidata. You can use this to draw on the map and add information. [2][3]

- The RevisionSlider will be available as a beta feature on all wikis from 13 September. This will make it easier to navigate between diffs in the page history. [4]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 13 September. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 14 September. It will be on all wikis from 15 September (calendar).

Ayr State High School
I think it'll always be a bit of a judgment call with these cases. I felt All Hallows' School Buildings was a really good example of where separate articles really works, because that was way, way, way too in-depth about the buildings and architecture for a building on a school (but great content), whereas Eagle Farm Racecourse and Ascot Railway Station was an odd grouping that'd never arise if we weren't directly using QHR content. (I feel like an end goal there, whenever one of us has time/can be bothered, might be to split out the briefer railway content and to reorganise the rest as Eagle Farm Racecourse Buildings so as not to overwhelm Eagle Farm Racecourse, while the Ascot station article could use that material.)
I feel like Ayr State High School is a pretty good candidate for a total merge as you've done - the history section is a good length and the description and heritage criteria fit in - the article as a whole does look a little bit funny, but that's because the pre-existing content is a bit rubbish when set against the detailed and well-written QHR text. I don't know that we need the QHR infobox and the school infobox, as the important things seem to be duplicated between them, but I'm not too bothered either way. Article suggestion for me?
Hi Kerry,
you popped up on my Watchlist (again!) and maybe you can help me.
I am looking to write an article, but I don't know what topic to select. My preferences:
- A brand new article, or a limited stub
- Plenty of resources available. I live in Brisbane so State Library resources would be handy
- I want to write something comprehensive (eg A-Class level). For example an article on a person that has a biography (eg 200 page book) written on them would be great.

- Hi @Commander Keane:, obviously I'm not Kerry, but he popped up on my watchlist too (which is what took me here), and I think I have something for you, so I'll drop you these lines.
- I'm from Germany, but I've been to Australia twice in my life, for roughly a year each time. The latter year was as a Work&Travel backpacker and one of my jobs was to wait the bar at the Cracow Hotel in Cracow, Queensland, a gold-mining ghost town in the Banana Shire (a real cool place to go if you like the Outback). That pub is run by Fred Brophy, the last Tent boxing showman left in Australia and probably the world.
- I really liked my time there and so in April this year I wrote a big article about Cracow in the German language Wikipedia (I'm a little proud that "we" 've got the better article now ;)). For this, I also uploaded quite a few of my pictures that I took while I was there. Kerry saw them, added some to the English version article, and that's what took me here.
- Now to the idea I've got, actually it's several ideas that I think fit your request so perfectly that I can't believe I just randomly stumbled across this. Here we go:
- First of all, the English article on Cracow is an OK base, but honestly it could use a lot of work. So if you're interested in a geography article, this is the one. You probably don't understand what I've written in my German article, but maybe it's an inspiration for you anyway. I could help by translating my article back to English, too; other than that I've found so much in the scanned online historic newspapers already that I'm sure the State Library will have loads of information.
- Secondly, the tent boxing article linked above is absolutely terrible, so improving that one would be very appreciated, too. This would be the history buff, library research, extending a very limited stub task of the three. I've been to Fred's tent three times while I worked for him and could offer first hand information about what the tent's like now and would be able to provide heaps of media material. All other research would be up to you though.
- And then lastly, if you want to write on a person, you could write an article about Fred Brophy himself. I wanted to do this for a long time (actually, I already had the idea when I was still working at the pub, which is one of the reasons I took this portrait of him before I left) and would be very happy to assist here, too. I'm very confident he's relevant according to WP criteria and he has for sure had a very interesting life. IMO, alone the fact that he runs the last surviving boxing tent in the world owes him an article. And believe it or not, quite precisely two years ago, Fred released his self-biography that he wrote together with a journalist. It's called "The last showman" and was published by Penguin Books (it was a rather major book, they even had it in the Big W bookshelves etc.) I think it's about 300 pages long, i.e. almost excatly what you're looking for. So this would be the brand new, person with biography option.
- What do you think? :-) Again, if you like, I would offer help for any of these ideas – if you don't "do" the articles, I'll do them at some time anyway (however that could take a while haha). Charters Towers
Hi Kerry, I just happened on this abandoned draft Draft:Charters Towers City Hall Building, which is possibly about to be deleted. - I double-checked using location (in case it was heritage listed under another name) but can confirm it is not on the Queensland Heritage Register. It could be on the Charters Towers local heritage register (but I cannot find it on the WWW, perhaps they don't have a local heritage register). Certainly it's a nice old building, but I am not sure I have the time at the moment to work on it, but I'll add it to my ever-growing to-do list :-) I don't think we can stop the deletion as the draft article is 4 years old, unless someone is actively committing to work on it. lets face it
we are going to wake up one morning and find the whole of the queensland set of articles about brisbane or queensland railway items has been reconfigured by that sock. relentless, energetic and a sock farm as big as trumps fortune. I strongly suggest that if some articles get regularly re-visited at all they get protected. the ocd must be strong as the telltale signs are not disguised much. John Brewer Cameron
Hi Kerry, I know it would be a lot of work, but have you considered producing an article on Cameron and his Qld/NSW border survey project using the info in each of the related articles (Cameron Corner Survey Marker, Zero Obelisk, and Cameron's 1 Ton Survey Post) which could then each be substantially reduced in size? - This is a good idea, but probably not immediately. I am currently doing items 1 and 2 of User:Kerry Raymond#What now? because my immediate goal is about getting the articles on the heritage sites done. Doing articles like John Brewer Cameron is the sort of thing that comes under item 4 (extracting other content from the Qld Heritage Register). Because I'm working with around 1700 articles, I have a big spreadsheet that I use to manage what work has been done and still needs doing to which articles). Cairncross Dockyard
Hi Kerry, I'm not sure if it's heritage listed, but if it is the Cairncross Dockyard - and especially its dry dock - might be a good topic for an article drawing on the CC heritage sources you're familiar with. The dry dock was built in a screaming hurry during the Second World War, and would have to be among the most significant sites relating to the war in Brisbane as it was used to repair large numbers of warships and merchant vessels. - @Nick-D: I actually have already written about it as part of another article Hamilton Reach#Cairncross Dockyard largely based on info in the Engineering Heritage Program, but unfortunately that is all copyright material, so I just wrote a short summary and provided the citation to their much larger document. It could be pulled out of that article into a freestanding article, but it might leave both Hamilton Reach and the new Cairncross Dock both a little light on content individually. I didn't turn up a lot of sources at the time on the dock, so it might not pass GNG (despite being the 2nd largest dry dock in the country). I just did a quick look for any new sources and found that the site is about to be sold off for residential development. It's not clear what happens to the dry dock itself in such a development, turned into a very large swimming pool or a small marina, perhaps? Kerry (talk) 09:41, 2 January 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks Kerry. Would you have any objection to me spinning this out to a separate article? I'm sure I've seen enough about the dock during the war and as a significant part of the history of various ships to remove any doubts over notability, and having it as a separate article would help with linking, etc (for instance, its where what the Australian Army ship Crusader (AV 2767) ended up as went for regular maintenance while being operated by the Queensland Cement and Lime Company). A quick search in Trove turns up quite a few useful-looking references ([7]), the the "civil" volumes of the official history of the second world war should provide coverage as well. Alexander Mayes
Hi Kerry. I see you expanded the article on Alexander Mayes. I don't know if you can help with this, but seeing as he had a son of the same name, do you think Alexander Mayes (cricketer) could be him? - @Lugnuts:, good catch! I checked the Queensland birth index. There is only one Alexander Mayes born in Queensland in 1901 and he is Alexander Dunbar Aitken Mayes, son of Alexander Mayes and Helena Agnes Grieve born on 24 July 1901, so this is definitely the son of Alexander Mayes. I cannot tell from birth index where the birth occurred but it is a "C" (country) registration meaning outside of Brisbane. But Alexander Mayes (cricketer) is listed as having a birthdate of 24 May 1901 born in Toowoomba, but there is no birth registration that fits this. So I am thinking "huh?", however when I check the citations for the cricketer, his details fully match the birth I found (full name and born 24 July 1901) - the mistake is in the cricketer's article. Weipa Town Authority
Hi Kerry, I wonder if this is something you might be able to add to your long list. There is an article for the locality Weipa, Queensland, but none for it's LGA (Weipa Town Authority). The Local government areas of Queensland list links to the locality article. For completeness I think an article on the LGA, however brief, is required. Do you agree?

- @Downsize43: I've created Weipa Town (to be consistent with other Queensland LGAs, the primary topic is the local government area with the council as a redirect, so Weipa Town Authority is a redirect). It doesn't have an LGA map; I'm not sure who produced the maps for all the other LGAs, but in a way it doesn't matter because it's tiny and its boundaries would like like a dot on a map of Queensland anyway. I was surprised though to learn there was a newsletter, which I discovered only because I did a WMF survey that asked me to tick boxes if I was subscribed to various things including the VE newsletter, so I did the "huh, what VE newsletter?" and went looking. It was of course trivial to find once I knew it existed. But, tell me, how do I subscribe if I can't use the source editor? Like the VE feedback page, it astounds me that you cannot use the VE to edit these pages. I notice on the VE Feedback we are seeing VE users starting to ask the question "why am I a second class citizen?"(the inability to respond to an admin nomination). I have very good fortune to have access to full range hard copies of WA GG, the amount of WA GG would take more than a machine and money to digitise, the sheer volume of GG for any state is well beyond any efficiency dividend managed/oriented library/archive facility/world that we currently live in JarrahTree 06:41, 23 January 2017 (UTC)
- I'm not so sure. The Qld GG is available at places like the State Library and State Archives as hard copy (I assume this is true in all states). The QGG has been digitised at Text Queensland since inception to 1900. There are digitisations on CD-ROM at SLQ to 1919 and I believe there is microfiche/film versions of all the paper versions, which is the first step for digitisation. I take your point though that the size of each year's QGG increases with every passing year so the effort becames greater for the later years. Against that, the Qld Govt reduced the information required to be published in the gazette over time (presumably because of the printing costs) or created separate publications like the "blue books" for public service appointments. So, here in Queensland, digitisation is slowly happening, regardless of the efficiency dividend. Wikipedia was launched in 2001, Trove in 2009. Who among us would have predicted the success of either of these back in 2000? What might be possible in the next 10 years? I live in hope anyway. Kerry (talk) 00:03, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

- Yes, the QGG is entirely online for the past few years. But the Qld State Archives still has a mandate to preserve significant born-digital data which is relatively straightforward for a periodic publication like the QGG but rather more challenging for live-updated databases (have to take snapshots or create a transaction log as series of diffs). And the Pandora project should pick up significant non-Govt websites. The librarians/archivists are definitely doing things in this space, but it is a big challenge for so-called "deep web" content and the danger is that the technology evolves either without a way to archive or too rapidly for the archivists to keep pace. So you are quite right that some born-digital things will be (or have already been) lost. But then we have also lost Qld historical records in fires and floods so no one format alone is perfect (more is better). Kerry (talk) 01:08, 24 January 2017 (UTC)

I think leaving ext links in text in any space is lazy - I think that the general 'sense' outreach/glam/wmau material in australia scattered, unlinked and generally messy - there is no central point to link to the unherded cats on this continent - each and every expert in their little world seemingly unable to make sure there is a general clearing central house up to date and adequately informed, although some seem to think the wmau website front page is meant to be that. That is what I am prepared to say online, dont ask what I say off.
That said, my adding the heading for ext links does not look nice on the page that I edited, I must say, I dont know what has been done on that page, but it smells of jvdb era.
The relationship with external bodies - regardless of whether it is glam, whatever - should be better written up imho - it is where they see how we record and relate to them - in some cases 'the record' is closer to scribblings of amateur bloggers than what I believe wmau and wikipedia should maintain JarrahTree 01:43, 2 March 2017 (UTC)

- As it happens, SLQ are currently thinking about doing some revamp of the page(s), which have grown somewhat organically. They are thinking of doing something along the lines of the State Library of NSW page(s), so I don't think there's a lot of value in anyone putting any great effort into the pages in the meantime. - @Whatamidoing (WMF):. Yes and no. I repeated the copy of the list with photos in List of sites on the Queensland Heritage Register in Toowoomba into User:Kerry Raymond/sandbox. In the original list article it had

and in the sandbox copy it has

Just as an experiment, I copied the list from my sandbox into another sandbox using VE (curious to see if it added anything more) but the result is the same:

I found some information that he was involved with an inaugural Intercity Eisteddfod in 1888 - or so that article said. The next article I found on Trove seemed to be a long article about the history of Eisteddfods in Queensland and seems to indicate that the Intercity event was in 1889 - on Christmas Day and Boxing Day no less (that was a bit of a surprise to me I must say). Anyway where this is leading is, what do you do when there is some conflicting information? I would hate for people to say that Wikipedia has unreliable information. Great Keppel Island resorts
Dear Kerry my name is Ian Mercer and I've been privileged to have had a 30 year association with Great Keppel through my brother Geoff who's successfully operated two consecutive businesses on this beautiful island destination since 1983. The first being an 18-35 village which complimented "The Resort" and the "Get Wrecked" theme from 1983-96 and now present day has the G.K.I. Holiday Village. Just recently a guest from America brought to my attention his first choice of information was to look up potential destinations through Wikipedia and told me of the scant info in relation to the choice of accommodation available on the island so I looked you up for the first time.I thought it appropriate to bring your site into the now as there are a variety of options for accommodation missing from your text that I believe need inclusion. They are the Great Keppel Hideaway a three hundred bed resort and the G.K.I. holiday village max of 32 guests both on Fisherman's Beach offering lodgings from houses, cabins, annexed tents and camping. The "Resort" has been closed and fenced off for near ten years now and to date doesn't look like being open for business in the foreseeable future as it will take 4-6 years to rebuild when Tower holdings finally decide to demolish and begin their latest concept. I don't see why other businesses should suffer the detrimental publicity as every time Great Keppel is mentioned in the media it always refers to "The Resort" being closed. I may have included too much info in my edit on the 30-3 17 but request that you at least draw relevant info from my attempt to re-edit to your page. What would you think about merging the station building article back into the main one? I think they're sufficiently on the same subject that they don't necessarily need to be split. The pre-existing one is a bit lacking in history content and because its infobox is quite a bit longer than the content (at least on my monitor) there's a great slab of white space at the bottom. I just had a bit of a look in preview-mode at how it'd appear and it seemed okay, and there's really not much that needs merging, apart from that last paragraph post-1995. - @The Drover's Wife: I actually started doing it as a merge but then I aborted and went with a separate article. There were a couple of reasons. The existing article is relatively popular with about 50 views per day and I think that is likely to be from people seeking to travel, rather than the history. As well as being a big local commuter railway station, it is also where the long-distance Queensland trains commence and across the road are oodles of backpacker hostels. I thought filling the existing article with a ton of history, description and heritage criteria would not need the needs of those readers. If it's a less-known railway station like Emerald railway station, Queensland (average 2 pagviews per day), I was less concerned about merging in the QHR content. The other big issue is that the heritage-listing is for one tiny bit of the modern station, a bit that is now pretty much lost to public view (at best you can see the rear roof). I was aware from a recent conversation on one of the local history Facebook groups that a lot of people believe the original station was demolished, so I wanted to "showcase" it a bit with its own article. I note the QHR itself says "... the context of the building has been gradually changed and the building is no longer appreciated as a discrete structure ..." so I figured I could give it a discrete Wikipedia article. What I do wonder is whether I need to name the new article a bit better than just appending "building" to make this distinction clearer, maybe 1873 Roma Street railway station building as I suspect if you asked the average Brisbane resident or visitor what the "Roma Street railway station building" looked like, they would describe this ugly modern building because that's what you see nowdays. Even for me, my memories are of the 1940s building now demolished. I could not have told you what the 1873 building looked like, even though it was probably less-obscured back then.
