Hi Kerry, I have removed the attractions from the List of G:link stations article. I have instead created a new Route section within the main G:link article which details the line, its stops and the attractions served. Recent changes
- A new image scaler fixed a number of bugs for showing SVG files. Some new problems turned up. [1][2][3]
- Notifications are grouped by types. They are now counted by number of notifications and not by unread groups. That change may increase the number of notifications displayed. The earlier way of counting was often incorrect. Unread notifications will also be displayed first. [4][5][6]
- Special:Notifications now has a maximum width for the notifications list on desktop computers. This allows long titles and descriptions to be cut properly. Notifications are now also better parsed. [7][8][9]
Problems
- On 5 July Wikimedia Commons had problems and could not be edited for 20 minutes. For a short while after that the recent changes log and some gadgets were not working properly. It affected administrative actions on other projects too. [10]
- Users who have multiple unread notifications can mark them as read by visiting Special:Notifications page on their wiki.

Oh for Pete's sake! I saw your name in both places and the penny didn't drop. You're welcome, by the way. The only placename difficulties that I have with that Collingwood, Queensland article are with cattle and sheep stations in the area that now can't be found on the map, and I have no idea whether they now go by other names, have packed up and simply no longer exist, or have been absorbed into neighbouring stations. I mention a place called Chollarton in that article, supposedly somewhere near Collingwood/the Conn Waterhole, but I'll be damned if I know where it is/was. Robert Logan Jack found a gypsum bed there. Perhaps it's really spelt "Chollerton", since the place in Northumberland is spelt that way, but the map services won't pin any spot in Queensland for that name, either.
Yes, people bandy names around willy-nilly. There's a lake not far from where I am, currently called Lake Simcoe, but look at all the names that it has had over the ages (Ouentironk, Taronto, Toronto, Lac aux Claies, Lake Simcoe), and to confuse matters further, that third one is now used for Toronto, a city some way to the south (and formerly called York). It lies on Lake Ontario, or is that Lac de Frontenac, or Lac de St. Louis?
Placenames also get duplicated on opposite sides of the world. There is a Collingwood, Ontario (formerly — take your pick — Hurontario, Nottawa, or Hens-and-Chickens Harbour), too, but unlike the one in Queensland, it's hardly a ghost town. Kelisi (talk) 15:32, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
- I have found this: "Gypsum is stated by local residents to occur occasionally in excavations for tanks in the country west of Winton. However, the existence of a 'bed of gypsum of workable thickness', which has been reported from Chollarton near Collingwood by Jack and Etheridge (1892) could not be verified. Collingwood is the name of a surveyed township, which never came into existence, about 35 miles west of Winton; but the locality Chollarton was unknown even to the oldest residents of the district."
- That was in 1949, by the way, and nobody could remember Chollarton. But then, it seems that nobody could remember Collingwood, either. All the newspaper articles that I ploughed through tell me that the writer is wrong about there never having been a town at Collingwood (it didn't last long, but it was there). Recent changes
- In notifications, the icon for Notices has been changed from a speech-bubble icon (

- If you use the wikEd gadget, changes you made were not kept when you switched from the wikitext editor to the visual editor while you were editing. This has now been fixed. [31]

- Wikimedia search will now ignore question marks at the end of the sentences or words you use when you search. Until now the question mark was just a wildcard. [32]
- On Commons, UploadWizard will now be available on mobile, rather than just the old upload form. This should reduce the workload for the community in reviewing images. [33]
- When you edit with the visual editor a puzzle symbol tells you there is an invisible template in the article. It will now mention the name of the template. [34]

Thomas Mowbray
Hi, I noticed that the links in articles for the Brisbane Thomas Mowbray are redirecting to a 1300s Duke. I think it is a case of blue links that should be red? I don't fully understand redirects yet so could you please look at? Thanks JennyOz (talk) 08:43, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, JennyOz! Yes, you are right. There is no article currently on "our" Thomas Mowbray. I have created a Thomas Mowbray (Queensland clergyman) for "our" guy and, as a temporary measure, redirected it to Mowbraytown Presbyterian Church as that article seems to have the most info on the man. However, whenever someone has the time, the article can be written rather than just redirected. I am happy to help with these things if you want me to, but if you want to do redirects yourself, what you do is create the article and then add just one line of text with the name of the article to be redirected to:
#REDIRECT [[Some other article]]
- When someone is ready to actually write the article (rather than redirect it), they just open up the article and replace the line above with the article text in the usual way.
- I have looked around for mentions of "our" Thomas Mowbray and updated them to link to Thomas Mowbray (Queensland clergyman). I have also updated Mowbray (disambiguation) to add our guy, so hopefully future links will be made to the right Thomas Mowbray. Kerry (talk) 09:25, 15 August 2016 (UTC)

Problems
- Last week Tech News announced you will get a notification when you mention yourself the same way as if someone else had mentioned you. This caused some problems and will happen later instead. [38]
- Creating and editing links to sections on other pages on the wiki now works again in the visual editor. [39]
- For some users, cross-wiki notifications haven't been working properly. The count has been wrong when only cross-wiki notifications were present. The cross-wiki bundle has been showing only the names of wikis and not the actual notifications. This will be fixed soon. [40][41]
Changes this week
- The login session when you choose "Keep me logged in" will now last a year. Previously it was 30 days. This will happen on August 16. [42]
- Some abuse filters will have to be updated during the week. This is because a bug will be fixed. [43]
- In compact language links, two new kinds of languages will be shown in the shorter language list: Languages that are used in the article's text, and languages where the article has a badge like "featured article" or "good article". [44][45]
- The visual editor will be available by default for logged-out editors on Wikipedias that use the Arabic script. It is already default for logged-in editors. [46]

- Right now I don't have any GLAM activities. In fact, I've been travelling for a number of months this year so off-wiki or just the occasional edit (too hard to edit using an iPad when travelling). And in between, I've mainly been working on my Queensland Heritage Register article (nose down). I do have a talk to a historical society coming up later this month which has been listed for some months on the Wikimedia Australia upcoming events. My past events appear on WMAU's Past Events listings. But I am unsure what reporting we are discussing? To WMAU? To ...? I am not sure I know of any reporting obligations that I've entered into that are outstanding. 09:12, 18 August 2016 (UTC)

- I have been asking around the traps about where we report/discuss training (particularly the VE training), which is mainly the outreach I do and expect to continue going forward. While training occurs often in libraries in a physical sense, it isn't really GLAM as such. According to the somewhat dated WMF Strategic Plan, outreach like training is one of their priorities; however, my emails now with a number of WMF staff whose job title might relate to this always involves them saying "that's not my responsibility, talk to Someone Else", who then passes me on to another person, then another, .... It seems nobody in WMF has any responsibilities/interests in relation to training, except for the Wiki Education program (which is limited to training within education institutional settings). So there's a real void in this space which is frustrating me a lot. The VE represents a real opportunity to engage more contributors as it's eliminated a big barrier for a lot of people. I'm seeing a lot more post-training contributions from those who have done VE training with me than I've ever seen before with the source editor, which is great, but does anyone in WMF want to know or seek to capitalise on it? - The ORES review tool is now available on Special:Contributions as a beta feature. It can make it easier to find contributions that are probably damaging the wikis. The ORES review tool is available on Wikidata and Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Dutch, Turkish and Russian Wikipedia. [48]

normandccnormfunctions have been updated to make it easier to write abuse filters. This also affects the TitleBlacklist extension. You don't have to transform "I" and "L" to "1", "O" to "0" and "S" to "5" anymore. [49] - The old pageview data in the "pagecounts-raw" and "pagecounts-all-sites" files is no longer being updated. You can find the new pageview data here. This happened on August 5. [50]
Problems
- Some big image files could not be thumbnailed. This has now been fixed. [51]
- When you moved a page over a redirect it would delete the redirect without saving it in the logs. This has now been fixed. [52]

Rabbits in Australia
Hello, Kerry. You mention that there ought to be a cite for my addition to the lede about crossbreeds. Actually, that came direct from the main article (although that mention itself might need a reference). - Good point. I shifted it into the text where it talks about the Barwon rabbits cross-breeding. The article as a whole could use more citations, but, like a lot of the older articles, they were written before there was an expection of citations, so we are stuck with what we have. Recent changes
- Wikimedia mobile sites now don't load images if the user doesn't see them. This is to save mobile data and make the pages load faster. [56]
- When you edit a table with the visual editor, pressing
Tabin the last cell of a row will take you to the first cell in the next row. PressingShiftandTabin the first cell of a row will take you to the last cell in the previous row. [57]
Changes this week
- The name of the "Save page" button will change. The button will say "Publish page" when you create a new page. It will say "Publish changes" when you change an existing page. [58][59]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 30 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 31 August. It will be on all wikis from 1 September (calendar).

Bus routes
Hi Kerry, I figured instead of us edit warring I'd explain my changes, Unfortunately many bus routes here become severely outdated and not only that but as time goes on the list becomes longer all the while not being sourced in the slightest,
I've come across a few articles that have outdated route lists but I came across one last year where the route list was last updated in 2008!,
Anyway consensus has been to remove them if they're unsourced (If each route is sourced I always leave it),
In the end we're simply hosting incorrect material and so IMHO we should be pointing our readers to the operators website where it'd be up to date,

- Ok, but these are different reasons to what you said in the edit summary. As it happens, I do share your concern about this sort of information becoming out-of-date but in this particular case is there evidence it is out-of-date? I would suggest reinstating the content and adding tags about unsourced and (if applicable) out-of-date, raise the issue on the article's Talk page and let it sit for a while and see if anyone addresses the concerns before deleting it. (Aside and truly in the spirit of good faith, I don't think it's appropriate to suggest I am edit-warring for doing one edit. In terms of WP:BRD, you did B and I did R. Your next step should have been D, not another R followed by D. For the record, I don't editwar, apart from cases of persistent vandalism.) Kerry (talk) 01:53, 1 September 2016 (UTC)
- I personally believe they fail NOTDIR & NOTRRAVEL however some believe ND/NT aren't entirely applicable to these but there's always been confusion with that, Anyway I've done it in the past and the tags simply get ignored and the list just grows and grows, If editors took notice of it then I obviously wouldn't remove it :),

I think you've probably linked the right topics there. Untangling those early unions from each other can be really difficult so it's something I've always put off creating but we should definitely have articles. I'll try and get at them in a bit - I got out an early history of the AWU from the library (which should presumably explain some of these unions, since they ultimately amalgamated into it) and haven't finished it because it's a bit dry, but I'm moving out of WA soon so I should actually finish the thing. Recent changes
- Word-level diffs now work in longer paragraphs. [60]
- Interactive maps now have a frame by default. This is to make them look like other multimedia objects. This affects all Wikivoyages, the Catalan, Hebrew, Macedonian Wikipedias and Meta. [61]
- When you preview the MediaWiki:Captcha-ip-whitelist page it will show a validation output of the listed IP addresses instead of the list of addresses only. This can help you to identify if your whitelist rules will work or not. [62]

<maplink>on all Wikipedias. It creates a link to a full screen map. [63][64] - Sometimes when you mention another user they don't get a notification. I felt compelled to change them after trying to express the direction halfway between northwest and westnorthwest and finding that I couldn't come up with a name using only north/south/west/east. According to this colourful compass diagram, that direction (point 28) is called "NWbW" ("northwest by west"). Perhaps other diagrams have a different name for it? I'll look.................Good heavens, what a pain! They all seem to be like that, all 32-point compass roses. Now I have always called "point 2" (according to that rose to the right) "northnorthnortheast", but apparently you're supposed to call it "north by east". Come to think of it, John Wayne, in The Longest Day instructed his men to proceed "north by east" if they came down somewhere other than their drop zone; so perhaps that is right. So, NbE = NNNE. I think you can be sure that it is universal. You may not have encountered this before because people generally don't express compass directions beyond the four cardinal points and the four points lying halfway between those (how many times has someone giving you directions said that you must go "eastsoutheast" to reach a place?). I am sure it is used in Australia — by people who bother to use 32 compass directions (but there aren't many anywhere).

- Perhaps you're right about all that. Not many people use those directions. Certainly I don't. So I have a better idea: the bearings could be expressed in degrees. There are online utilities that can do the calculations in a flash, and everyone knows that a circle is 360°, right? I'll round it to the nearest degree and not bother with minutes and seconds. I'll also explain the system in the introduction to the table for the uninitiated.
- Have a look on GoogleMaps, right here: Collingwood. Just in case I enjoy some kind of setting on GoogleMaps that you don't, I see a street grid there, complete with street names and land parcel boundaries. Is that what you see with the Queensland Globe add-on? In fact, the position for Collingwood that I have used in the article is a point at the intersection of Summer and Winter Streets. - Google Maps is better than I thought. Yes, it's the same, actually Google Maps is better because it has the street names. Mine has info about being freehold or whatever. Most allotments are state owned, which suggests to me they were never sold to begin with, but a few are listed as freehold. The big section between the two areas of town allotments is a reserve.
