Mathilde Julia Frachon -> Mathilde Frachon?

I see in 2016 you moved this page to its current location including her middle name. Just as a casual glance, I see her mostly referred to by first and last names, without middle. Any objection if I move to Mathilde Frachon without the Julia? --GRuban (talk) 15:53, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Seems OK to me, keeping in mind that I don't know/remember anything about her. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:15, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Piri

Hi. I noticed you did the source review for Angeline Quinto's FA. I'm trying to get Piri up there, but there are a few sources I'm worried about. Several radio interviews are no longer available, and therefore I am unable to locate timestamps for them. In addition, the last source, the Independent, includes this picture of her (holding up the Trans Rights are Human Rights sign) and Charlie Deakin Davies (two to the left), but does not mention either by name. Would either obstruct promotion? Launchballer 15:22, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

I am generally extremely wary of using newspapers as FA sources, doubly so when it's a British newspaper. For the sign thing, I question the dueness - do we need to know that she took part at a given march? If yes, did she twitter or otherwise announce her participation? It might be good to use such a source for corroboration. For the interview thing, being available online is not a requirement for FA sources. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 09:06, 24 July 2023 (UTC)
This is as good as it gets, and a) that image seems to have been taken by her, and thus doesn't include her, and b) that account tracks virtually everything she does. (I need a very good reason to cite social media, especially a fan account.) It should probably come out. I'm worried about The Times now.--Launchballer 09:21, 24 July 2023 (UTC)

Your FA comments

Hi Jo-Jo Eumerus,

Thanks for contributing to the FA discussion for Affine symmetric group -- the saddest thing would be to have no engagement from anyone. I've found some of your comments vague, and I see that XOR'easter seems to have had the same experience. Each of us made some pretty precise queries for clarification, which you do not address in your subsequent comments. I don't think you and I have interacted much before, and tone/intention are hard to judge in written communication, but I would describe the vibe I'm getting from this is a bit passive-aggressive. Is there any way I can get you to directly address the questions I posed there, or perhaps just clarify your intentions?

Thanks, JBL (talk) 21:28, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

Greetings,
I've listed some examples; does that work? The reason why I asked about footnoting is because I did skim the article and had no idea whatsoever what most of it referred to. I've seen complaints elsewhere that mathematics articles are often incomprehensible for folks who don't have a deep expertise in the topic. Even in other science topics, it doesn't seem to be that bad. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 16:51, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I'll take a look.
Advanced mathematics is a particularly difficult topic to exposit for a general audience because (unlike in the sciences) mathematical objects themselves are abstract. This abstraction allows enormous power (and perhaps explains why, for example, the same mathematical machinery is used in studying planetary orbits and population dynamics) but also creates barriers to entry. I will certainly look again for places that a simple parenthetical or footnote might help -- another commenter made a good suggestion for something like this in the lead, for example -- but ultimately if I succeed at writing WP:ONELEVELDOWN (which I hope I mostly have) a lot of the content will still not be fully comprehensible to (the large number of) people whose mathematics education ended at the secondary level (or similar).
All the best, JBL (talk) 23:45, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
