Thanks but ...

Thank you for thinking of sending me a welcome message but I'm actually less new than I look. I first edited this encyclopaedia in September 2002 and have been trying to give it up ever since. :) DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 09:37, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

RVW 9

Well, as someone who was at the 1st performance of RVW's 9th symphony - and was there again in the Royal Festival Hall last summer to hear it performed as part of the composer's 50th anniversary - I am delighted to see anyone helping to get this great and inspiring work taken seriously. (Imho no other country would treat one of its - and arguably one of the 20th century's - greatest composers in such a cavalier way). So please accept a welcome message from me :) John Hamilton (talk) 11:47, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Middlesbrough

Hi DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered

Thank you for pointing that out for me and for checking the wikified places on the rescue list box. I have tried to make sure the list link to the correct places but it is so easy to miss the odd one and find that the place name you want to link to is the wrong location. One anomaly that I do find rather frustrating on wikipedia is that often when you link a town in the UK, our American cousins seem to place there town or city ahead of the UK one. I.E. If you wikify Boston it links to Boston in the USA and if you want a link to Boston in the UK you have to link via Boston, Lincolnshire. Personally I think the original should just have the word Boston as its title and all others to which are named after them should be prefixed I.E. Boston, Massachusetts as a homage to its origins, but perhaps I’m being old fashioned.  stavros1  ♣  13:41, 1 January 2009 (UTC)

Cromer Lifeboats

I see you created the various articles on lifeboats stationed at Cromer. There is a discussion here in which it is suggested that they are not notable enough individually to warrant individual articles. It has also been suggested that they be merged into one article. Re:Advice please (now sorted)

Sorry I didn't check my talk page sooner. Usually COI's are fairly straightforward; if you see a user say that they are a friend, coworker, significant other, or are the person, and are editing in an extremely biassed fashion, whacking a COI warning template on their talk page usually won't hurt. That's what the other editor appears to have done in this case. Anyway, let me know if you need any more advice - I'll do my best to get there in time next time around. SMC (talk) 14:31, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

replied at t'other end DisillusionedBitterAndKnackered (talk) 18:18, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Well, unfortunately the COI warn template is a single-level template. As a result there's no "stage one" as there is for vandalism (ie. assuming good faith "vandalism" in the form of test edits). To avoid overwhelming the user with a full-length welcome and COI (they're unlikely to read both) you could use a shortened version of the welcome note - {{subst:w-short}}. There appears to be welcome templates for NPOV and spam editors, but nothing for COI's. SMC (talk) 01:48, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

England Leeds Mission

Darned if I know! There was a suggestion somewhere to do this - merge the Leeds page into the Leeds Mission one. Maybe someone used an admin tool to remove it, or perhaps the old version of the page contained it and got deleted. I've got a feeling there was a PROD on it that I can't find now. That would be where the suggestion would have been made. An embarrassing one, too. As it doesn't apply now, you can bin my comment. Peridon (talk) 17:54, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I see you warned this user: User talk:Da best editor on 26th Feb. They don't seem to do anything constructive, but have amassed many warnings. I don't really see the point in their continuing to use Wikipedia as their personal joke project. Can you please tell me what is supposed to happen next, procedurally? Exactly. Now a next vandalism would be addressed at WP:AIV and result in a block. How long is a question, but users like this usually can;t keep away from vandalism. I will keep an eye on this user. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Alansohn (talk) 14:25, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Woodleigh School

If you look at the history of the poster who originally posted the offending material IP 212 etc, you will see that user has a history of vandalism and IP bans. I am asking that the local NYORKS editors do not simply revert in a trigger happy way and compound the problem. If you examine the talk pages of the local editors I do not think this is an unwarranted assumption. Regarding the complaint, a complaint has been filed with an editor directly, I find this more productive than listing it on a public page and feeding the trolls. 90.242.178.116 (talk) 11:16, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Harrisburg city template

The Harrisburg city was template was created on the 25th and was initally very cluttered and included articles like Strawberry Square[1]. I had decided to revamp it to make it more like other city navigation templates (like {{Erie, PA}} or {{Allentown, PA}}). Afterwards the template was still on a bunch of pages in which the page wasn't linked in the navigation template (haven't got clue to where this came up, but some other people don't think pages should have a navigation template if the page is not in it).

Now if you feel that Strawberry Square is an important enough topic for the City of Harrisburg, by all means, add it back to the template and add the template back to the article. I just chose what I thought (as an out-of-towner) was the most important topics to Harrisburg. --D.B.talkcontribs 17:43, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

Furble

I wish to object in the strongest possible terms to your misuse of the colour Furble which as any fule kno is a light brown, with hints of green, unless used by the Royal Marines in which case the brown is a touch darker. With thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 12:46, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

PS seriously, it's a very good edit, and I do hope that a consensus can peacefully be reached. I'm very much in favour of not trying to summarize things too much in a couple of words when they've clearly taken a lot longer than that for historians to understand! Cheers.
Thank you for the amusing message. I had a brief sense of panic when I saw the edit summary and I realized I did not actually research whether furble was a real word! (There are actually two ACW articles in which I was unsuccessful in turning back the decisive adjective, so I had to use a footnote for each to explain what the word actually meant in the context of that battle. Messy. I really do not want that to happen to Gettysburg.) Hal Jespersen (talk) 15:19, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Northumberland

Hi there again. I love Northumberland, too. I've stayed all over the county from Berwick downwards (or should that be southwards). For me it really does "tick all the boxes".

  • archaeology
  • photogenic
  • heritage
  • geology
  • scenery
  • nature
  • deserted beaches
  • unique local foods and drinks
  • super walks on hills, beaches and coast paths
  • lovely people
  • not crowded

Once I get over the Blaydon bridge I am entranced. This time I shall be around Wooler and walking in the Cheviots, but I always take a trip to see how the "dig" at Vindolanda is progressing. The Kielder forest drive is also a must! (I really did see a golden eagle there, honest.) I could go on and on and on .....

reveille

Hi. I am the guy who's edits to reveille you deleted. I have to point out a lie you added to your message: you said the page reveille makes it clear that the commonwealth "The Rouse" is not a version of reveille, while the first time I read it I was led to the conclusion that it is, and so were many other poeple. Thank you, Drlf (talk) 23:30, 1 April 2010 (UTC).

Hi and thanks very much for the message.

  • Please see the note on your Talk page concerning the word "lie", and the Wikipedia policies WP:AGF and WP:CIVIL.
  • I am not sure in what way the wording, "The Rouse, a bugle call commonly mistaken for "Reveille", although these are actually two different tunes." is unclear. The article does seem perfectly clear to me. Misreading an article is not the same as being drawn to a false conclusion by its bad structure or content.
  • There's no evidence of the "many other people" who were "misled" by this. You are the first to raise this concern.

Best wishes, DBaK (talk) 09:21, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

Middlesbrough Estate or Estates, and spelling

Hi, could you please have a quick look at Talk:Saltburn Pier and let me down gently if I'm being an idiot? :) Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 15:33, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Good question, and a nice solve I hope! Not being a native of said area (been a couple of times, nice views and architecture), I came at this from developing the article on George Croydon Marks, and noticed the two rather large gaps we had; so hence the investigation/creation. This pdf from Redcar & Cleveland councils archive confirms it as "the owners of Middlesbrough estate" (page 39, section 4.15). It also highlights how awful our current Saltburn article is, and what a great source of detail this conservation area plan would be. I looked around Wikipedia and Google for sources for Middlesborough estate over the weekend, but could find much - a books job I guess, unless you know better? Hope this helps, happy to discuss further. Rgds, --Trident13 (talk) 16:35, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Olekiombo or Olkiombo

Hi. You are right, these are alternate spellings of the same place. I'm quite confident that "Olkiombo" is the official spelling. It is not uncommon to see Kenyan place names being spelt in several different ways. They are often named in tribal languages which have little history in terms of literature (in this case Masai language) Julius Sahara (talk) 18:49, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

Re. "Do you get a LOT of people wanting to discuss the history and music of the baroque trumpet "

Well...not quite. However, recently, I did help write Tambouras. Not quite related, but...it does go to show why having a broad base of knowledge in the help channel is a good thing. And that's not to mention the fun we had with these things. But after a certain football game yesterday, I'm definitely not mentioning those :-)

Sung to which tune? It is vaguely familiar, but I can't pin it down. Pdfpdf (talk) 13:23, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Ha! Excellent question. It's this - key, exact tune etc all a bit arbitrary but the best I can manage right now.

File:Coldfrosty.png

Each line has "this is the way we" [do something, e.g. brush our hair, go to school etc] at the start, repeats the done thing twice more and ends "on a cold and frosty morning" or something similar.

Example:

  • This is the way we go to school
  • go to school
  • go to school
  • This is the way we go to school
  • On a cold and frosty morning.

Walled Garden

A "walled garden" is where there is an article which at first glance looks like a lot of blue links and references, but when you start examining the links and the references, they are all only referring to other articles/content produced by others within that "walled garden" - with no actual recognition from third parties or to the world at large. That's very kind of you, thanks. As for doing more writing ... well, in some ways I'd love to, but in others I'm maybe better off pottering around as I currently do. Doing too much, and ending up taking it too seriously, is something I have done in the past and that I am keen to avoid doing again now. But thanks, your comments are greatly appreciated. Best wishes, DBaK (talk) 07:52, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Heh. Could there be a middle way, such that you write more, but take it less seriously? :-) Viriditas (talk) 09:34, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Hah! dunno really, but one of the reasons I am D, B and K - well a minor contributory factor anyway - was what happened the last time I was even remotely unserious while trying to edit in this lovely project. I ended up feeling only slightly better than if I had been revealed to be an out-and-out puppy-torturer and barbecuer-of-kittens. So now I'm trying to steer for the middle ground (er mixed metaphor alert?) and be neither one thing nor the other. To be honest, just doing less is probably a good thing, much though I love it. I have, in truth, become quite disillusioned over the years... :) Cheers, DBaK (talk) 12:14, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

OK let's have a look. Firstly, 21 is nowhere near the record - I don't know if Winston Churchill holds the record, but he has many more than 21!
As for whether a multiplicity of categories is a good thing or a bad thing, probably a good thing. It increases the chances that someone will find and read the article by browsing through the category structure (the system of categories being predicated upon the notion that this is one route for readers to find related articles).
As for whether the categories themselves are appropriate, one standard point is that categories ought to be supported by material in the article, per WP:CAT: "It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories." Looking therefore at the list of categories for Stefan Zweig:

So, some scope for trimming, some scope for improving the article to match the categories. Hope this helps. BencherliteTalk 10:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC) BencherliteTalk 10:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

I'm sorry?

OK, so using a specific image on terms of advertising and navigational purposes is apparently "not accepted"? A more appropriate image used would surely be the benefit of the public and other people. Reverting some changes that have been suggested by Network Rail is fairly contradicting to one of your "favourite quotes" that "would be just fine...". My change is simply for the public as the previous images are not very clear and maybe confusing to some people (e.g. writing 'hotel' on the image caption of 'St Pancras Station' may be misunderstood by some tourists, thinking that it is a hotel, thus avoiding it). Although its clear to us, it could be an obstacle to people, domino-ing into the station, consequently, a ticket less for the rail company and Network Rail. Kindly do not change the images back. Thank You.

Monochrome BBS

Having read through the article saved by User:Quaestor23 I can see how it came to be deleted, as much of that information would be of more value on the BBS's webpage itself. I do still feel it's notable for being pretty much the biggest BBS in the UK in the mid 90's, though as pointed out, other than the scan from .net magazine from 1990 there's no references to that. But we can infer from that article, in the biggest Uk magazine to deal with the internet, that Mono was notable enough and rare enough to be commented on in a full page article. --Davoloid (talk) 16:53, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Thanks very much for that. As you can see I was involved in efforts to save the article and I would like to see it back one day. The lack of references was a real problem (though in fact we now have the .net ref, which we used not to) and the people who were so keen to delete it were not going to be swayed by inferences and the like. They wanted real proper references or it didn't happen. I can sort-of sympathize with this stance for the good of the encyclopaedia as a whole but it's a bit painful to behold when it's a topic close to you. People of a deletionist bent can sometimes look a bit fanatical, spiteful, or whatever, especially if you're on the wrong end of it. I'm not sure I agree with your view that there was something wrong with the content - it has a couple of wow-gosh bits but I felt it was mostly quite encyclopaedic. The content wasn't, of course, what really killed it though, just the lack of good references. Finally, I was very excited to hear about your session at Barcamp 8 and I've responded at User talk:Quaestor23/Monochrome BBS. Cheers, DBaK (talk) 08:28, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

On looking through some of the BBS Lists, there are definitely some there that survive as stubs, pointing to the main site. Do you think that would be acceptable? There is also the notability that Tugs & Pie featured on a few TV shows in the mid 90's. Once again - how do we reference that?--128.16.12.204 (talk) 09:54, 4 November 2010 (UTC) Some references there now and a rewrite - you might be able to tidy those up! --Davoloid (talk) 13:44, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

It's looking good, well done and thanks, but I have nothing to add and I don't think I can stomach another AfD negativity-fest so I will, I think, be wise to leave it at this point and hope for the best. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 18:37, 9 November 2010 (UTC)

Totally your call if you want to keep it, but in general consideration of the user's edits — the first of which was to MFD an AFD discussion, and this edit was one of 12 in a five-minute span posting the same exact thing to different talk pages — I'm not sure how sincere it's meant. Hope you didn't mind the rollback on it, since it was — at least to me — clearly part of a disruptive spam spree. Strange Passerby (talkcontribs) 15:01, 3 December 2010 (UTC)

While I agree with you that blaming the pilots for the piece of metal falling off their aircraft's tail is fairly farfetched, the talk pages are for discussing improvements to the articles, not general commentary. Middlesbrough Railway Station

The overall roof was 'high' in relation to its width. Most other North Eastern Railway roofs were arched (smooth / rounded) this one was eliptical (pointed). The real shame is it was initialy patched-up, so it could have been saved. Methinks this otherwise grand station to be so much the poorer without it. Anoraker (talk) 23:33, 20 January 2011 (UTC)

Compare 'Boro's with Darlington Bank Top, Hull Paragon, Newcastle Central, Stockton (demolished c.1980) and York. There be some old photos of Boro's station via google. Anoraker (talk) 01:00, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

You are correct about this mistake in the time calculation. I went to U.S. Naval Oceanography portal for a definitive answer. I am afraid there is many more similar mistakes. I already checked my hometown Hiawatha, Iowa and it had the same mistake which I corrected. Thanks for pointing this out. FYI I patrol all Iowa Communities and that is how your edit of Bettendorf, Iowa came onto my radar. I also have a watch on User talk:Iowahwyman, so following that thread I decided to contact you with this update.

I thought it was so, but I really wasn't sure, and I live quite a long way away from this time zone! :) I did try to do a search for instances of this problem but I could not find a search term that reliably found the particular articles. I am therefore very glad that you are aware of the problem. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 13:16, 21 January 2011 (UTC)
After posting the above message I checked out your user page and just had to let you know that not only did I steel (I hope you get the irony ha-ha) the tag about drive by tagging, I stole the entire section bravo I have been frustrated with drive-by taggers, not only NPOV but others, and now I have something to drive by and tag on their talk page. I will need to modify the message to fit their drive-by but you have given me a good base to start. Again Thanks

Still at it! I wonder if you have any advice on the recent suggestion that the screenshot was "possibly" subject to trademark. As far as I can see it demonstrates the home page, just as there is a home page of a BBS on the main BBS page.   Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Letter (paper size), is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. You bloody swine! Do that again and I will have the law on you!!! your corrections of my corrections

Wow. I really apologize. I even took the time to go to several different grammar sites to make absolutely SURE I was truly remembering my editing correctly, and I kept reading over and over and over that commas and periods are NEVER outside quote marks. Ever. That's how I was taught. However, I don't profess to know how Brits do punctuation, so I happily accede to you. I've never had anyone undo my corrections before, and that's fine, truly it is. It's also not worth nit-picking about, either. Life is much too short to fight over comma placement, even if one IS bitter, disillusioned and knackered. It just looks so weird to me to see it that way. Is there someway to tell who an editor is on articles? If one clicks on an 'edit' button on a page, does the user ID appear anywhere? I will respect your pages and skip over editing anything of yours in the future, I promise. Please DO let me know if there is a means of knowing that; I spent too much time re-doing all those commas and quotes only to have them all un-done again. Thank you for your message.
