Could you take a look at Discrimination please?

Saint John's Methodist Episcopal Church

Hello Dan,

I do appreciate you sending me this information. I have to be completely honest and tell you that navigating Wikipedia is very challenging.

We as a church no longer go by that name. In fact, the Methodist Episcopal Church does not even exist anymore. We are also, no longer in the historic building.

This Wikipedia article is linked to a Facebook Community page that is not giving correct information when it comes to the name. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Do I need to create an entirely new article? I have already reached out to Facebook and they have said that the only thing for us to do is to update the information of the Wikipedia article that it is linked to. So any insight on how to continue would be very helpful! Thank you!

@AliDevereaux: Hi Ali, thanks for the message and sorry about the challenges of Wikipedia. I'll try to explain the concerns here. Each subject of an article on Wikipedia should have a claim of notability because it would be impossible to write an article about every single thing to ever exist. Something that distinguishes the 1917 church building described at Saint John's Methodist Episcopal Church (Kingman, Arizona) from millions of other churches in the world is that it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In other words, it is the building that is currently presumed to be historic, not necessarily the congregation (your congregation) that used to be in that building and have now relocated. For that reason, if we suddenly change the whole page to be solely about the new church, there would likely not be a claim of notability anymore; Wikipedia is not simply a directory of organizations, and the page would likely be headed for deletion.

My suggestion is to try to locate a reliable, independent, secondary source (see WP:RS), such as a newspaper story, that documented the move to the new church, and to propose a change on the article's talk page to include some text in the current article that describes the fact that you're now in a new location, etc. If you haven't already, please read WP:PAID and WP:COI for Wikipedia's paid-editing guidelines, and thank you for disclosing your affiliation in your previous edits. Whoever is the admin in charge of a Facebook page or group — typically someone affiliated with the organization, or church in this case — has the ability to change the details of that page or group. @AliDevereaux: No problem. I know Wikipedia can be tough to navigate. We try to summarize what reliable sources say about a given topic, and ideally every fact in every article is backed up by a cited source, so if the public defender's use of the building has been reported, I think it would be fine to mention, but it does need to be verifiable as opposed to originating from your (or anyone else's) personal knowledge. However, I suggest thinking about this article in the grander scheme of things. A lot of newsworthy things happen each and every day, but not all of them will merit inclusion in an encyclopedic entry. (The ten-year test is a helpful thought experiment.) Regardless, you are welcome to propose the change on the article's talk page at Talk:Huntington Beach, California and see if you can gain consensus for its addition to the article. That's the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle — you made an edit, it was undone by another user (Binksternet), and then a discussion can be opened to decide whether the proposed change would be worth keeping. • I am not an administrator on Wikipedia, but editors are generally allowed to edit any article, and no one "owns" an article (particularly not the subject of the article).
• I removed the registered trademark symbol in accordance with Wikipedia's Manual of Style, which says Do not use the ™ and ® symbols, or similar, in either article text or citations, unless unavoidably necessary for context. It's not unavoidably necessary for context in this case. For similar reasons, articles like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal do not use the registered trademark symbols either.
• I have not communicated with any employees of Roswell Daily Record via email, and any email exchange that you've had did not involve me in any way. It is true, though, that I prefer to communicate through my talk page. (@Nick Moyes: do you know anything about this? This presumably relates to the Rdraric account.)
• Your username "PeacockLawRoswell" is a violation of Wikipedia's username policy because it is the name of a law firm and implies shared use. Please visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest and request a new username that identifies you individually, such as "Svitlana at PeacockLawRoswell", or create a new account that complies with the username policy.

@PeacockLawRoswell: As I seem to have been 'pinged' here (and am an administrator), let me try to assist you.

• Firstly, DanCherek is quite right in their reply to you (including the point about your username - but I will overlook that in the spirit of attempting good communication with you).
• It looks like I was the admin who gave a WP:SOFTBLOCK to Rdraric, simply for a small breach of our policy whereby we require one person to have one account, and not to imply shared use, as happened with their edits. They have not been "prohibited" from making changes to that article (though see advice below); they were blocked per WP:SHAREDACCOUNT as they spoke using the collective term "our", suggesting more than one person has access to that account. Advice on editing again was given on their talk page.
• They (and you) are free to choose a better account name, but we do very strongly discourage people working for an organisation to attempt to edit the article about that body. This is a clear Conflict of Interest, and we advise that they make a specific WP:EDITREQUEST on the relevant article's talk page, stating clearly what changes they would like to see, and asking for good citations to back it up.
• Whilst Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation takes copyright very seriously, we do write about Notable topics in an encyclopaedic manner, not a legal one. That means that we never fluff up titles or trademarked names when simply collating reliably published sources about that subject just because the organisation itself has an internal convention to normally put the ™ or ® symbols or other legalese on its own literature. So the removal of that type of superfluous content added by Rdraric was quite justified, and any other editor here would do precisely the same should it ever be reinserted. If that was the sole issue that caused you to come here, then I am sorry to disappoint you and your client, as we will not be altering articles in that way, just to suit a subjects wishes. So, on that specific issue, I don't think any other information or documentation will be needed from you.
• But was there any other issue we can help you with? If so, it would really be preferable to make that WP:EDITREQUEST on the article talk page, as suggested above, so that all editors with an interest in the article on Roswell Daily Record can see it.
• Personally, my view (without doing WP:BEFORE) is that this tiny newspaper does not meet our Notability Criteria, and it would be better to have it as a simple WP:REDIRECT to the article on the Roswell incident.
• Finally, two smaller points to draw your attention to: You wrote: "Furthermore, the communication is confidential and intended only for the named recipient.", but be advised that you actually agreed to release your text under a Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA) licence, per the Wikimedia Foundation's Terms of Use when you created this account to communicate here. Hi Fembelle, welcome to Wikipedia! In short, the draft needs to demonstrate notability of the subject before it can be accepted, and that means references that show significant coverage of Toussaint in multiple reliable, independent sources. Interviews like the Haitian Times source don't really count towards notability, and the Grungecake source is too short to qualify as significant coverage. Furthermore, since this is a biography of a living person, information in the article should be cited to high-quality, reliable sources. At present, there are many sections in the draft that are entirely unsourced. Feel free to continue to work on it and resubmit when you feel that you have addressed these issues, after which another reviewer will evaluate it. Thanks and let me know if you have any questions. OpenTopography wiki page

Hi Dan, thanks for reviewing the OpenTopography wikipedia article. Im a bit confused by the review. I see other projects like OpenTopohtaphy on wikipedia with even less references - e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNAVCO or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NCSA_Brown_Dog. I have put in references from NSF as well as independent pubs like GIS Geography. I realize its not as long as the others but my aim was to have a page that the earth science community who are users of opentopography can then expand on. Can you please clarify what I need to update to make it eligible? Thank you

Hey Helen, hope you're doing well! Thanks for the message. Yes, vandalism drafts can be tagged as G3 and super promotional drafts can be tagged as G11. For the latter, keep in mind that drafts have a little bit more leeway than mainspace articles, since draftspace is designed for issues to be worked out. If only part of the draft contains promotional language that can be simply removed, it might be better to do that. If the entire draft would require a fundamental rewrite (like the whole thing is just a blatant advertisement), then fine to tag for speedy deletion. In your Twinkle preferences, it may be helpful to check the box that says "Keep a log in userspace of all CSD nominations" — this will automatically log all of your Twinkle CSD tags at a page like User:DanCherek/CSD log so you can go back and look at them later and see if any were declined. Also, I don't think it's necessary to tag things lke Draft:JUNAID HABIB AHMED because it doesn't fit any of the speedy deletion criteria (I've never specified a custom reason), and abandoned drafts like that are typically deleted by WP:G13 after six months of no edits anyway, so it doesn't do any harm to let them sit in draftspace. Babak Khorramdin (director)

Hi DanCherek. You mentioned something on my user talk page about Khadempour322 and machine translations; so, I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind checking Babak Khorramdin (director) for something similar when you've got some spare time. I asked Fastily about the article, and (as I suspected) G5 speedy deletion probably doesn't apply in this case. I know zero about the subject matter, but an administrator over at Commons seems to think the murder of Khorramdin might be more notable than Khorradim himself. So, if the article can be kept but only needs to be rewritten, then all the copyvios which might be hidden in older versions would need to be cleaned up. I can ask an admin who does this type of things to check the article, but a revision deletion might not be necessary if all that's need is cleanup per WP:RIA. Of course, if the article is deleted, then none of this matters. If you're assessment is that the article can't be saved, then I think the only option is going to be WP:AFD (maybe WP:PROD); on the other hand, if you feel the article just needs fixing and wouldn't mind helping to figure out how much copyvio stuff needs to be cleaned out, then I can ask as some WikiProjects to see whether someone has any ideas on how to fix it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:41, 7 June 2021 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Sorry, I don't read Persian and am not confident about assessing the article's notability, so will leave it in the NPP queue for now. Though it is a machine translation (which I could tell by going to fa:بابک خرمدین (کارگردان) and clicking Google Translate), Khadempour322 actually provided proper attribution when they initially created the article (Special:Diff/1024012509), in that they indicated that the article was translated from the fawiki article which they linked to in the edit summary. That's all that's required per WP:TFOLWP, though I'll go ahead and add {{Translated page}} to the talk page as well just for extra clarity; nothing needs to be "cleaned out" in terms of complying with copyright in this case. (edit conflict) My understanding is that any template that, when fully expanded, contains [[User:<anyone>]], with or without piping, pings that user, so long as it appears:

1. On a new line
2. That contains your signature (or technically any link to your username, I think, but there's bugs with the whole sig thing, which is why I can no longer have a parser in my sig)

To my knowledge, {{noping}} templates and a few vandalism specific ones like {{checkuser}} are the only ones that deliberately hack their way around that. Anything else will go through. I definitely recommend using that preference. I find it very helpful. User:Example is pingable, so you can always test with that in your sandbox.

Textile Research Centre

Dear Dan Cherek, many thanks for your work on the entry for the Textile Research Centre in Leiden, the Netherlands, and my apologies for the mistakes and errors I made yesterday. Yes, there may be a conflict of interest, since I am sideways attached to the TRC.

Yesterday I read the entry, and noticed it was hopelessly out of date. I made various changes and additions, trying to be objective and factual. Forgive me for being 'new' to the editing of texts. I only made an account yesterday. As for copyright infringements for TRC Needles, yes, I copied the texts straight from the TRC website. Not good, I now realise (I naively thought it would not matter). I can of course shorten it and rephrase the text.

As the text stands now, it still has a list of exhibitions around 2010, which is not very useful. I suggested a list with the exhibitions between 2015 and 2021. I also suggested a list with online exhibitions.

Again, I fully understand you have your rules and must stick to them in order to uphold objectivity etc.

Hi Willemvogelsang, thanks for the message. A couple things: first, if you expect to receive compensation for any contribution you make, please provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.

Second, Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent, secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself. For that reason, basing most of an article on an organization or institute's "About Us" page isn't appropriate either. The article has been tagged for years for overreliance on primary sources, and that is still an issue with its current state. Adding more would just make it worse. Finally, I reversed the edit to the exhibitions because it replaced a sourced list with inline citations, with an unsourced one.

I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests. You may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 11:56, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

Hi Akk7a. That website's copyright policy places limitations on how the material can be used or modified in the future. You were reproducing the text accurately at the X Corps (India) article, but putting it on Wikipedia licenses it under CC BY-SA 3.0, which allows anyone to create any derivative work using that text (with attribution). Wikipedia is generally not compatible with licenses that include such restrictions (see WP:COMPLIC), which is why I removed the text. Hope that makes sense. (talk page stalker) Dan is absolutely right but if I might add a small point of clarification — working in draft space is the right place to work on material that's not quite ready for main space but it is visible to any editor in Wikipedia. Draft space is noindexed, which means people outside Wikipedia using a search engine aren't going to stumble upon the draft in progress, so sometimes people think of draft material is being "invisible", but it's only invisible to searches in external search engines. @Cinanina: Sorry, but since the source material is copyrighted, it can't be copy-and-pasted into Wikipedia. We can't quote the entire report in its entirety either, because that would not be in accordance with Wikipedia's non-free content criteria, specifically #1: Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose. In this case, the free equivalent would to write original prose summarizing the report, as there is no reason why the article needs to use the GEO's specific text. Your first link is a press release and is clearly labeled as such, so it is not considered an independent source — it comes from the agency associated with Childs. The second link is an interview and essentially all of the text on that page originates from Childs himself, and so again it is not an independent source that would contribute to an argument for notability. You may wish to read Wikipedia:Reliable sources for more information on expectations for sourcing, particularly in a biography of a living person. Because the draft's references at the time did not demonstrate that the notability threshold was met, I declined the draft. Please note that a decline means that the subject may be notable, but additional work is needed to demonstrate that — I intentionally did not select the reject option which is designed for drafts that have essentially zero chances of ever being accepted. Yes, I understand. Unfortunately, the threshold of notability has to be set somewhere, and significant coverage in independent sources is how that is determined on Wikipedia. Hi There Dan,

I submitted a page for my father, who is a Professor of Sociology and has terminal cancer so was keen to create a wiki page.

We initially copied and pasted a section from the York university website (where he was Dean) which we intended to edit but I submitted the page. You understandably rejected the page due to copyright.

We have now changed the page and have written it ourselves and are trying to resubmit it but I cant work out how.

I think you're placing a copyright violation on this article is a very heavy-handed move and frankly a waste of an admin's time to review. Why not re-write the text and delete/reference the offending link. It is not even clear here [unless I'm missing something] as to whether the web-page you've linked for CV took text from Wikipedia in the first place. I just don't understand your approach, you've left all the work to other editors to re-write his early life and redact a seemingly good reference rather than write it in in a way that doesn't violate CV. @Mountaincirque: I strongly disagree — I don't think it's a waste of time for an administrator to redact a large amount of text copied verbatim from a copyrighted source, which is a violation of Wikipedia's policy. It was added only six minutes before I removed it so no, it's not reverse copying from Wikipedia. A very small group of editors deal with dozens of copyright violations that are introduced every day, and it is not and should not be incumbent upon them to spend hours rewriting every affected article. Great work on the copyvios from here, many thanks! You may have already noticed that much of this may have similar or the same problems. Anyway, I'm considering what to do about it all (and particularly whether a CCI is needed); by convention we'd want to see five solid examples of unacceptable copying to make a request. Do we have those, do you think? Well, OK, I can see from your recent contribs that we do; which are the most egregious, in your opinion? By the way, if you come across a really bad page you're always free to just blank it and list it at WP:CP. That has several advantages: it saves time for you; it makes sure that the page will be thoroughly checked for any residual copyvio, or deleted if the copyvio is too pervasive; and it allows you to alert other editors who work in this area that there may be a long-term problem. Hi Justlettersandnumbers, thanks for the message! I was initially hoping to go through their ~1000 contributions and remove the copyvios that I could find, but it was getting trickier the further back I went. There definitely are issues dating back to 2010 and possibly earlier based on their talk page so I'd definitely appreciate your thoughts on whether a CCI is warranted. From what I could tell, just about every significant addition of text from them has included copyright violations, specifically copying sentences from the sources that they cite (this helps with detection, but the inline citation doesn't always correspond to the one being copied from). This 21kB addition to Chris Martin (artist) was particularly bad, and Lever (1966) and Jason Stopa needed to be reduced to stubs to get it all. I think the fact that basically every diff that I checked was a hit for copyvio indicates that there is much more to be cleaned up. I was surprised that there was no synopsis for the opera and the NYTimes review appears to be the lone online source for one (even in Italian, which is very surprising). As it's highly unlikely NYTImes will permit the kind of licensing iikiPedia requires, I may draft my own synopsis from the score itself which will take a bit of time. There is likely no English libretto (the only vocal score I have is Italian only). But I'll make that a project. The work deserves more than the currently sparse entry. Yes, you can either write your own synopsis from scratch or summarize the NYTimes one in your own words — the latter might be an easier task in the short term. The big box was just to indicate that a particular revision (with the copyright violation) had to be hidden from the page history, since this is something only a Wikipedia administrator can do. Generally if someone is notable enough for Wikipedia, there will be multiple reliable, independent sources with significant coverage of them. @Ugochukwu75: Based on my own search for sources, I don't believe he is notable by Wikipedia's standards. That's related to the fact that Alliance Football Club does not seem to be a particularly notable group in its own right, and so it's not too surprising that there are not that many high-quality sources about the group's coach. I don't think an article about Rowshan would survive an AfD discussion. If you would be interested in expanding an existing football-related article, I'd suggest looking at Category:Association football biography stubs, which contains a ton of super short stubs that are more likely (but not guaranteed) to be notable — these would be good candidates for expansion!
