Hi Tony6802, I see you are using the VisualEditor so in the editing mode, you should be able to click each photo and simply hit the "delete" button to remove it. Hope that makes sense. Copyright Problem

Hi Dan, I am Itcouldbepossible. Recently you tagged a draft with copyvio tag, which I previously tagged with CSD. Your copyvio guess was not wrong. But how did you know that it was a copyrighted content. Do you copy each article and pass it through a plagiarism detection software? I would like to learn the method, because I like reviewing new pages, and find problems and correct them. I also CSD some and draftify some. In short, I run a thorough check to determine all that can be done about the article. Hi Itcouldbepossible! There are a few hallmarks that might lead you to suspect that something was copied, and you'll get a sense for these over time as you patrol pages. In this case, the draft was promotionally written without inline references, as if the editor had just copied chunks of the "About Us" page of the organization's website – and checking that website confirmed this to be the case. Earwig's Copyvio Detector is a really helpful tool when you suspect copying, but be aware that there are certain sources (such as PDFs) that it can't interpret, and that it will sometimes return false-positive matches to sources that are Wikipedia mirrors. Material obtained through interviews

Hello, DanCherek! I am working on a couple biographies, and am personally interviewing the subjects to establish their histories. Such interviews lack any formal reference, and I am wondering how they can be safely included. As an example, the interviewee might tell me a story from their youth that inspired their direction in life, but proving that such an event occurred is essentially impossible. I was thinking that if I simply state that the source is allegorical, with a formal approval of the resultant material by the subject, that might be acceptable. Hi there. First of all, according to Wikipedia's guideline on reliable sources, articles should be based on reliable, published sources (emphasis mine). That means that if you personally interview someone and they tell you something but this interview isn't being published anywhere (let alone a reliable source), then the statement should not be included in the article if it can't be verified elsewhere. Additionally, interviews should be used with caution – see Wikipedia:Interviews for some good advice, though keeping in mind that that page is just an essay. Finally, Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons contains important information about the higher sourcing standards for articles about living people. Thanks, but that's not the way to do it – I've already provided the necessary attribution in this edit. For future reference, attribution for copying within Wikipedia should be provided not in the article text itself, but rather in the edit summary. When editing Wikipedia, there is a field labeled "Edit summary" below the main edit box. It looks like this:

Hello Dan: I have received multiple messages from different people and replied multiple times. I am not sure that any of the people I replied to have read any of the other replies so I have no idea where this article stands. I was asked to create a profile for Yelena Yesha. She is a prominent academic expert (profiled in a 2-part article by Forbes magazine) and a pioneer for Women in Tech. My question is: who would create an article for her if not me? How do prominent figures end up here if you forbid those with the most information about them from publishing their basic information? I am certainly not trying to create a "profitable" account for her. Academia is nonprofit. I am not getting paid a fee to create this article. I simply work at the same place she does and am just trying to do my job. Anyway, I have (I thought explained or refuted your objections) but I keep getting the same messages that I have already responded to from different people. I guess Wikipedia will decide somehow when it's time for an article on Yelena Yesha.

In short, we can't host copyright text that has not been explicitly released under a compatible license, and previously published material without a copyright notice is still considered to be protected by copyright. You are welcome to recreate the draft, either written in new and original prose or by releasing the text on your website under a compatible license (see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for how to do that) – be sure to follow the conflict of interest guidelines as well. To answer your question "who would create an article for her if not me?": if you don't want to write the article yourself, you can add her name to Wikipedia:Requested articles. No guarantees, but experienced editors sometimes go through those lists looking for notable subjects to write about. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Thanks for the reply. As Wikipedia:Conflict of interest explains, even volunteers can have a conflict of interest if they are writing about something they are affiliated with. This relationship needs to be disclosed for any edits to affected articles. Your edits to the Sea Scout article were reverted for two reasons: the previously-published text was not released under a compatible license, and it was extremely promotional, even if you didn't intend it to be. Hello Dan: Thanks for your reply. I am still confused about the copyright. The "copyright" note on the footnote of our website was just like filler text to make it look official. After I was told about the conflict I removed it and notified the person who told me. I DO want to write the article, but Wikipedia is refusing it (as far as I understand) because I have a "conflict of interest" (not being paid a fee to do this), and because of the copyright (but the information in question that is "copied" is our own text which we are okay with). I will put her in the Requested Articles in any case, and I will try again to write the article (if I can figure out how to get around/work with the big red box notice). If you would like to attempt to write the draft again, I recommend starting with the article wizard, which is designed to make the process easier. At the appropriate step, please select the button that says "I'm writing about myself, or a close person/subject", which will help you provide the necessary disclosure. I'm not going to lecture you because neither of us need that, but this logged-out block evasion will actively impede your goals – if I hadn't commented at the SPI, it could very well have been closed without action and made future filings more difficult. That is an example of user-generated content because anyone can just write anything (without even needing to register an account). One more thing: if you translated material from other wikis, you need to provide attribution to satisfy licensing requirements. Hi Onel5969! That is the {{uw-copying}} template. I usually fill out the parameters manually but it is also available via Twinkle (under the single-issue notices section). If you use Twinkle, note that the optional parameter is the page that is being copied from, not the page that they are copying to. Please also be aware of Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing, which is superficial modification of copyright material and is also not allowed – meaning you can't just put the old material back and swap around some words or phrases. In my opinion the best way to avoid this is to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). PROD is designed for articles where you think the deletion will be uncontroversial (like an AFD where you expect everyone to !vote Delete without much discussion needed), but where none of the speedy deletion criteria apply. That also means that anyone, even the article's creator, can remove a PROD tag for any reason (or without giving a reason), and then anyone who still thinks the page should be deleted would have to nominate it at AFD. Contested speedy deletion, deleted anyway

Hi, you flagged a page for speedy deletion at Slowjamastan and I contested this given that it is as equally notable as other micronations with wikipedia pages. I noted reasons and 3rd-party news, etc. when contesting the speedy deletion. Within an hour, it was already deleted anyway. I'm not very familiar with this, so I'm a bit surprised. Could you explain how this works? Since I contested it, I figured someone would review and realize this is a micronation claiming independence exactly like others with pages on Wikipedia. It's big news here in California where I live (not far from the land claiming independence). Seems like no one evaluated the fact I contested it, so just looking for some clarity. Hello Decentuser! First of all, I'm guessing that you came to me because I made an edit to that article a few weeks ago, so I'll preface this with a disclaimer that Indian cinema is not my area of expertise.

Notability on Wikipedia is generally based on the extent of coverage in independent, reliable secondary sources. For actors, the specific guideline is WP:NACTOR, which stipulates that actors should typically have had significant roles in multiple notable films, television shows, stage performances, or other productions, or made unique, prolific or innovative contributions to a field of entertainment. Looking at Bhasin's filmography tables, it doesn't seem like he has had a starring role in a film or television show yet. If that's correct, then (without looking too closely at anything else) I'm not sure he meets the threshold of notability yet.

Soundtrack album

Hi DanCherak, I m Theoder2055. I just moved Dhoom 3 to Dhoom 3 (soundtrack) to add the dubbed soundtracks as I am not able to add the dubbed soundtracks in the Dhoom 3 page itself. I had no option so I had to create a seperate article for soundtrack album. Can you suggest me that can I add the dubbed soundtrack in the main page Dhoom 3? Hi Theoder2055. The issue was not that you created a new soundtrack article, it was that you did so without providing attribution to the contributors who wrote the text in the original page. It's not fair to those editors when you make it seem like you wrote everything in Dhoom 3 (soundtrack), and more importantly, it violates Wikipedia's licensing requirement because that attribution is required by the Terms of Use. I'm not sure why you are having trouble editing the Dhoom 3 page, but I'll repeat what you have been asked multiple times – when you copy text from one article to another, please indicate the copying in the edit summary, such as: copied content from [[Dhoom 3]]; see that page's history for attribution. It defines a long quote as more than about forty words or a few hundred characters, or consisting of more than one paragraph, regardless of length. Thanks Dan. Could you edit the Oliver article mentioned for me? The 'naming' procedure looks similar to that used for multiple uses of the same reference. I review reports from a bot that checks for potential copyright violations, and in this case the bot matched the text in the quotation to the text from the source. So obviously this wasn't a violation and the bot got it wrong (as it does sometimes, that's why each report is reviewed by a human), but that's how I found this particular article. Besides that, there are new page reviewers that look at newly-created articles to ensure that they are free of spam or other policy violations. DanCherek (talk) 17:37, 23 March 2022 (UTC)

Trying to add a page for a volunteer EMS agency

Hello,

I was trying to add a Wikipedia page on the South Orange Rescue Squad. I wanted to get started on it so I copied some text from the website. It was flagged for a “speedy delete” and that is my fault for copying the text from their website.

Is there anything I should know regarding adding this agency to Wikipedia? It is a nonprofit organization and operates under the south Orange Village office of emergency medical services (OEMS) and I believe that it is an integral part of South Orange, NJ for the past 70 years.

While the page was deleted as a copyright violation (so be sure to write in your own words in the future), one important thing to consider is that organizations are considered notable enough for Wikipedia if and only if they have been the subject of significant coverage in multiple reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject. This is a rather strict criterion, and you can read more about it at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). This generally means that you should provide citations to multiple independent sources that cover it in detail, and simply relying on their own website won't be sufficient. Hope that helps! I hate saying no but I am spread pretty thin right now between various on-wiki projects (Geoffrey of Monmouth for The Core Contest, Durian at FAR, and copyright cleanup), and real-life stuff too. Christianization of the Roman Empire is an impressively detailed article—a testament to your efforts—but I'm not sure that I would be able to give this my usual level of attention when I review things, so I will have to decline unfortunately. That's all right, I understand. Do you know anyone with an interest in sociology? I think it was a lack of knowledge of both sociology and current scholarship - with some predispositions - that were the causes of a quick fail, and now it has that strike against it. It's been distressing, because WP needs the newest scholarship in this area posted somewhere, and there are a lot of people out there that are having trouble letting go of what they are familiar with. Hi SoyokoAnis, hope you're doing well! Creating it in your userspace is perfectly fine, it's great for going at your own pace and I do that with a lot of my article drafts as well. I think you're off to a good start – the Handelsblatt article looks like a decent source. With an article like this, the biggest hurdle is probably going to be clearly establishing notability, for which the bar is a bit higher for companies and organizations. Hi Donna's Cyborg! Definitely – a lot of editors use their user sandbox for something like that. Just go to User:Donna's Cyborg/sandbox, click the button to start the page, add whatever you want, and then click "Publish changes". (Note that while it won't be an actual article, other editors are still able to see anything that you publish there.) You can also create pages with different titles in your userspace depending on how you want to organize things. Just change the page name, for example User:Donna's Cyborg/notes. Hope that helps! Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. You're right – it's not surprising that a new website like that doesn't have a lot of significant coverage, but that is generally the metric by which notability is evaluated on Wikipedia because reliable sources should be the foundation of every article. I have a client that wants their page updated (as the current language is potentially libelous) and they also want to add some depth to their story, which is pretty shallow right now.

Since you are editing on behalf of a client, you'll need to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY – that means disclosing the relationship on your user page, on the talk page of the article, and/or in your edit summaries. This disclosure is required by the Terms of Use. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest. I see you have been trying to copy text from Brentwood Academy's website into that article. Even if it was licensed compatibly, it was extremely promotional – some of it was basically pure advertising – and not appropriate for Wikipedia, where articles are written from a neutral point of view and supported by reliable, independent sources.

New Page Patrol newsletter May 2022

New Page Review queue March 2022

Hello DanCherek,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 816 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 861 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
