Request

Hey, a few months ago you sent me Khazrai, Firoozeh (2016). "Music in Khusraw Va Shirin". In Talattof, Kamran; Clinton, Jerome W. (eds.). The Poetry of Nizami Ganjavi: Knowledge, Love, and Rhetoric. London: Palgrave Macmillan. ISBN 978-1-137-09836-8. (pages 163–178). Would it be possible for you to email it again? You had sent me a google drive file which is now unavailable and I completely forgot to save it to my computer. Aza24 (talk) 05:49, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

@Aza24: Yes, sorry about that! My main Google Drive was filling up and so I am migrating some things over to my Wikipedia-email Google Drive and deleting some old files in the process. Now   Re-sent via email, and let me know if you need any other previous files that have been since deleted. DanCherek (talk) 08:38, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
No worries! I meant to save it (like I had down with the other files) but forgot. You have no idea how many GAs I have/am-going to get done from your assistance in getting sources :) Aza24 (talk) 02:20, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Quick question

So a few times today I was using WP:Citation Hunt to help find sources for articles, so I would copy and paste the sentence where a citation was needed into Google search. After I did that, a few times I would see the same exact words pop up from other websites. Should I be bold and remove that part of the article or just use those websites as citations? SoyokoAnis - talk 03:20, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Hi SoyokoAnis, are you asking what to do if you suspect that the article copied from another website? This can be tricky because often it happens the other way around as well, with websites copying from Wikipedia. Usually it helps to try to figure out when the text was added to the article, and compare that with the website's date, if you're able to determine that. Did you have a specific case in mind? If a website copied from Wikipedia, it's not a reliable source and should not be used as a citation – that's called circular referencing. DanCherek (talk) 03:56, 22 November 2021 (UTC)

Could you take a look at Suresh Raina please, he introduced copyvios there too but that content appears to be deleted now, can't figure out when and if rev-del will be needed. I've revdeleted all the new copyvios. cheers —SpacemanSpiff 13:02, 25 November 2021 (UTC)

@SpacemanSpiff: Done, looking at the other old articles now. I don't think revdel is necessary there due to the large number of intervening edits. Thanks for handling the recent ones. I think this might be Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Vidhinagpal that wasn't found in the recent sweep based on the India Today copyvios on writer BLPs and the fact that they started editing in July, what do you think? Necromancy Cottage Book

As it seems, this author and book are better-known in Canada, and coverage on it may be tied up in government archives, so I'll have to see what I can find. Where the author is female and writing on the Chernobyl disaster, it would be good to keep the article, but I'll look for more substantive coverage first to see if it really qualifies here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PetSematary182 (talkcontribs) 16:08, 30 November 2021 (UTC)

@PetSematary182: Thanks! Like I mentioned, I think it sounds like an awesome book, but I just wasn't able to find any source to support an article about it. If you're able to dig up significant coverage of Necromancy Cottage in reliable sources, please let us know in the AfD discussion and I'll be happy to reassess my nomination. Question from EvantheMendel on A-Next (22:15, 17 December 2021)

Hello Mr. Dan Cherek, I am a new user on Wikipedia and I have just gotten on board the "editing team", or so it's called. I would like to get to know the other users on here, and ask about their editing experiences on here. I also would like to know if you are an everyday mentor on here? Do let me know please.

-Evan Mendel --EvantheMendel (talk) 22:15, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Evan, nice to meet you and welcome to Wikipedia! You can get started by editing any article you are interested in, making sure that what you write is supported by reliable sources and written in your own words. My talk page is always open and I'll do my best to answer any questions that you have. You can also ask questions at the Teahouse which is monitored by other volunteers who are willing to assist. I will leave a welcome message with some helpful links on your talk page. Happy editing! DanCherek (talk) 22:19, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Question from EvantheMendel on Shenseea (22:25, 17 December 2021)

Hello Mr. Dan Cherek,

Can you please clarify to me what a soapbox is? Thank you.

-Evan Mendel --EvantheMendel (talk) 22:25, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

@EvantheMendel: Where did you see this term? According to our article at soapbox, it's "a raised platform on which one stands to make an impromptu speech". On Wikipedia, sometimes people use it as described at Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not#Wikipedia is not a soapbox or means of promotion, meaning that users should not try to "climb a soapbox" and write opinionated, non-neutral pieces about controversial subjects. DanCherek (talk) 22:29, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Question from EvantheMendel (22:44, 17 December 2021)

Hello Mr. Dan Cherek,

Thank you for responding to my two questions. I have several more to ask: first and foremost, is this the only place - the "Ask your mentor a question" - where I can respond back to you? If there is or are any way of responding back do please let me know. Or if there is or are other ways to contact or respond back.

Second of all, I have seen the soapbox from the 5 Pillars of Wikipedia. Have you read that rule on here?

Thank you and I hope to hear more from you.

-Evan Mendel --EvantheMendel (talk) 22:44, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

@EvantheMendel: My recommendation for how to reply to an existing thread is to go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures, scroll down to "Discussion tools", click the box to enable that, and then click "Save". Then you will see a [ reply ] button on messages like this one. Other ways to reply to an existing thread are described at WP:TALKREPLY. For your second question, yes I have read the five pillars, thank you for asking! I think they're a nice and concise summary of what Wikipedia is fundamentally about. DanCherek (talk) 22:54, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Hello Mr. Dan Cherek,

I think I have found a way to respond back to you, by clicking on the edit button. I hope this works? If not, I probably have to go about this some other way or maybe might need more help. Thank you for responding to my questions!

EvantheMendel (talk) 23:08, 17 December 2021 (UTC)Evan Mendel (I hope I'm doing my signature right?)

Yes, you got it! Clicking that edit button is how I usually do it as well. By the way, feel free to just call me Dan   Also, you'll notice that my reply to you is slightly indented, because I started my message with a colon (:). If you were to reply to me again, you would typically increase the indentation by another level by starting your message with two colons (::). That helps organize talk page posts a bit to make it easier to tell who is replying to whom. There's more information about that at Wikipedia:Indentation. DanCherek (talk) 23:23, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dan,

Is the use of the indentation that important or a requirement? I feel like it doesn't have to be, if ever I am going to edit some of the articles or even respond back. But thank you for reminding me. If I will be having any more questions, I shall be in contact. Thank you! Oh! Do you also happen to be a mentor to other people as well, or are there other mentors?

EvantheMendel (talk) 20:49, 18 December 2021 (UTC)Evan Mendel

@EvantheMendel: No, it's not a requirement, but when you have dozens of people talking to each other, as there are on some pages, you can imagine that it gets confusing if there is no indentation. There are currently about 50 mentors, and I think I am assigned to about 180 new editors – though only a fraction of them ask questions. DanCherek (talk) 21:20, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

I see. I understand that replies do get lost every now and then. If I might suggest, maybe putting two asterisks or maybe pluses before the reply might work, instead of indenting? That might work? :) EvantheMendel (talk) 22:45, 18 December 2021 (UTC)EvantheMendel

When it's just two editors talking back and forth like we are, it's fine as long as you both understand who's talking to whom, but indentation is typically expected in general on talk pages. DanCherek (talk) 22:49, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Regarding removed copyrighted material.

You have removed copyrighted material from a page (African Americans (ethnicity)) I am editing. I have revised it by paraphrasing and not directly copying the cited text, and yet it was still removed, specifically the section regarding native American ancestry, as well as preparation of soul food by slaves. You removed them a second time and informed me not to repost copyrighted material. Could you please review the edits I have made to make sure you are not mistaken? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Taharka155 (talkcontribs) 02:34, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

@Taharka155: In this edit, you re-added a paragraph about the Gullah-Geechee communities copied entirely from Essence, a sentence about Southern recipes copied entirely from Roll with Soul, and a sentence about AAVE copied from Buzzfeed, among others. I reverted the edit because you were still copying from other websites. DanCherek (talk) 02:44, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Avee558, welcome to Wikipedia! See MOS:IMAGELOCATION for more information about how to do this. TFAR

Hi Dan, I've just seen your TFAR request for 28 January. I currently have Space Shuttle Challenger disaster provisionally scheduled for that date, which as an anniversary of the disaster can't be moved to another date. How committed are you to A Beautiful Crime running on that date? Obviously, as a TFAR request, you have the priority and the disaster could be postponed for a year, but I'd like to run both if possible and drop a rerun. Please let me know your views as soon as possible. Alternatively, I could make the paperback date of 12 Jan available Jimfbleak - talk to me? 07:33, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

@Jimfbleak: Thanks for the message! I'm not committed to any particular date at all, just want to see it on the Main Page at some point   Please feel free to schedule Space Shuttle Challenger disaster for the 28th and A Beautiful Crime for whenever you decide is best. Copyright violations misunderstanding

Hi

I have seen that you recently used duplication detector report on my recent changes on Music of Iraq and added template about this. I understand your action, but I have been misunderstood. Usually I paste the text I want to write and save immadietly and then go back and write with my own words. I make these measures since English is my third language and it takes a lot of time to do this and to make sure that I dont forget anything. I would like to kindly ask you to undo your effort and remove the template and give me some time to finish what I started. I dont want to to do it myself so it does not seems like there is something I want to hide. Best regards.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SonOfBabylon1 (talkcontribs) 16:14, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi SonOfBabylon1, any text you add to anywhere on Wikipedia needs to be compliant with the copyright policy – you attest to this every time you click "Publish changes". Pasting copyright text in an article is not okay, even if it's just temporary and you plan on rewriting it immediately. For this reason, I'm not going to restore the copied text to the article, but the websites you copied from are here:
Please make your changes before saving the page, or you can use an external editor such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs. DanCherek (talk) 16:22, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for the quick response. DanCherek, I understand. I will avoid doing that on my future edits. Can I remove the template once I am finished? — Preceding unsigned comment added by SonOfBabylon1 (talkcontribs) 16:31, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

@SonOfBabylon1: I appreciate your understanding! Good luck with the article. Please keep the copyvio-revdel template at the top of the article – an administrator will review it (hopefully soon) and redact the revisions from the page history, and then they will remove the template at that time. Thanks. DanCherek (talk) 16:35, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

Question from EvantheMendel (19:00, 19 December 2021)

Hi Dan,

I keep on editing and re-editing this article about Siaosi Sovaleni, and somehow, someone keeps on touching or editing the article that I've just edited. How do I prevent this from happening? If you're asking what I've edited, I've already stated my reasons why. --EvantheMendel (talk) 19:00, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

You've been blocked for edit warring, which means that you were repeatedly reinstating your contested edits without attempting to discuss on the talk page. That's not how things work on Wikipedia – others contested your changes and so you needed to seek consensus through discussion. Other things that are not okay: your attacks against other editors [1][2][3] and your logged-out editing at Siaosi Sovaleni. As of right now you are only blocked for 72 hours, but I suspect that it will be extended indefinitely if you keep up the personal attacks. DanCherek (talk) 19:39, 19 December 2021 (UTC)

A Beautiful Crime scheduled for TFA

This is to let you know that the A Beautiful Crime article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 29, 2022. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 29, 2022, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.

For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.

We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 14:07, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Thoughts on SpaceX Starship?

I saw you being one of peer reviewers in the review, and I found that to be pretty useful even late into the article's development phase. What are the flaws of the article now? Thank you so much for reviewing by the way, I really do appreciate it a lot! CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 09:13, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Your work on the article is commendable. As I alluded to in the peer review, I think it is inherently limited by the fact that you are trying to describe something still in development that does not fully exist yet. That's a limitation due to the subject matter, not your efforts. Regardless, it means that most of the article is speculative or relies on what SpaceX says they think it will be able to do. DanCherek (talk) 14:30, 20 December 2021 (UTC)
Yep, it is quite a ride to write the article. I constantly have to monitor every nut and crackles in forums and tweets, and trying to weed out speculations. Starship has a lot of coverages, but even in reliable sources, there are a lot of speculations and such. Anyways, thanks for your comments, I will try my best to tighten it up and get the damn featured star. CactiStaccingCrane (talk) 04:51, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

Same here. Thanks for fixing my mistakes on the Winter War and Aftermath of the Winter War. In a situation like this, where the material I want to add already exists on another article, is it considered preferable to copy it from that article? Or should I still use my own words? I figured that there was no need to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Betelgeuse X (talk) 16:41, 27 December 2021 (UTC)
@Betelgeuse X: Thanks for your contributions to those articles! It's totally fine to copy material from one Wikipedia article to another, and it's often helpful when the article that you're copying from is well-written and well-sourced. Just be sure to provide the required attribution in the edit summary at the target article (e.g., copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution). Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions! DanCherek (talk) 16:45, 27 December 2021 (UTC)

@LibraryLadyA: Hello, and thanks for the message. First and foremost, since you have been editing the article of your employer, please read WP:Conflict of interest#Paid editors and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies, and note that paid editors are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly, but may propose changes on talk pages by using the request edit template so that they can be peer reviewed.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and so all information should still cited to reliable, independent, secondary sources. DanCherek (talk) 17:57, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi Dan,

Thank you for this information. As I stated, the information is not copyrighted and is actually public knowledge freely available both on our website and with the Maryland State Government websites. References are forthcoming, as I had to stop editing to attend a meeting.

I'm happy to acknowledge that I'm editing in the capacity of the Marketing and Outreach librarian, and leave my contact information; however, I am considered the "expert" in this matter and there are no "outside" individuals who would be able to can provide credible information. Information that would be added by other users would be considered less than accurate.

The page seemed to have been created automatically, without any outside input. I corrected it. Please restore the page as soon as possible.

Ashley — Preceding unsigned comment added by LibraryLadyA (talkcontribs) 18:42, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

You copied text from these four websites:
At the bottom of each of them, there is a copyright notice: "© Copyright 2021 - Maryland State Library - All Rights Reserved", so the text is copyright and we cannot treat it as public domain. Wikipedia articles are built on independent reliable sources—coverage in those kinds of sources is actually how we typically evaluate whether something should have an article in the first place—and this article is not a place to duplicate the "About Us" page of your website. DanCherek (talk) 18:51, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

MSLA - Please leave my page be.

Our agency is the copyright holder of our information. I, as the account admin, am providing the CORRECT information taken directly from our website. I have NOTED that I'm an employee of the page.

I really don't understand what the issue is... I am in the PROCESS of completing everything, and you keep restoring the WRONG information. I can't get it through the Copyright Donation if you keep removing it.

It's not a war, it's not a competition. I'm TRYING to put the correct information out there. There are NO politics involved.

Please leave the page alone.

Ashley — Preceding unsigned comment added by LibraryLadyA (talkcontribs) 19:31, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

I've explained the issues above, and please provide a more explicit disclosure on your user page that you are employed by the Maryland State Library. The template Paid can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: . Please see WP:OWN: organizations don't own their Wikipedia articles and don't have free rein to do whatever they want with them. If you want to propose changes to the article, I strongly recommend you do so on the talk page, using the Edit request template. DanCherek (talk) 19:39, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Chronology of Tamil history

The main problem with these edits, which I reverted and a new IP reinstated sans most of the sources, is that the sources are media sources and they don't all mention the Tamil, and Tamil itself doesn't make these claims about prehistory. Doug Weller talk 17:09, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

@Doug Weller: Thanks! That's fine, I have no objections to your reverts. Without looking too closely at the content itself, I was mostly concerned with fixing the IP's unattributed copying. DanCherek (talk) 17:12, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
Good catch there. I've taken it to WP:FTN as this attempt to add fringe claims is not infrequent for Tamil related articles. Doug Weller talk 17:17, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Vandalism or Misleading Information?

Hi, thank you for your attention to the article Indonesian Malaysians. But someone keeps changing the information listed. As an Indonesian, I can confirm that this is a mistake because Anak Dagang (Foreign Malays) means Non Malay Malaysians =/ Indonesian Overseas. One must remember that the term "Indonesia" is a modern construct and only came to prominent following the Indonesian revolution in the early 20th century. Dutch East Indies Citizens, Srivijayans and Majapahitans definitely were not Indonesians. In the same way, you cannot equate the modern Italians with those Romans of antiquity, "Italian" is a modern identity. Thanks in advance🙏

Atlantic Studies Global Currents

Dear Dan,

Thanks for your edits for the Wikipedia page I am trying to start for the academic journal Atlantic Studies: Global Currents. I am confused that it popped up as copyright infringement. This text was not copied from anywhere. In fact, I am working with the Editors of the journal to create this page, and they provided me with the text they want uploaded on the page. I can send it over to you for review if that would be helpful. Thank you, Emily Berquist Soule, Ph.D. ˜˜˜˜PacoTheSheepdog — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pacothesheepdog (talkcontribs) 18:49, 3 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Pacothesheepdog: here is the report where your draft was flagged as a potential copyright violation because there was substantial overlap with text from this page: https://journals.theasa.net/journals/name/atlantic_studies_global_currents/821/. Click "iThenticate report" to see the overlapping text highlighted in red and you'll see that it was almost all of the draft's contents. The text has not been released under a compatible license so it can't be copied to Wikipedia verbatim. One more thing – since you are working directly with the journal's editors to create the page, please read the conflict of interest guidelines to learn how to provide the required disclosures. Hi Supermanfan1979, welcome to Wikipedia and thanks for your contributions. Since the material has been previously published, there are a few extra steps that are needed to verify that the material is compatibly licensed with Wikipedia—meaning that it can be shared, distributed, transmitted, and adapted by anyone, as long as they provide attribution. The easiest way to do this is probably by contacting the Volunteer Response Team via the instructions at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. Sorry if this seems a little bureaucratic, but it's important to verify that the text is properly released under a compatible license. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 23:29, 4 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Tiger Flowers (book)

On 4 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tiger Flowers (book), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. I am the copyright owner

Hi, DanCherek:

On December 29, 2021, I contributed the following article and all its pictures to Wikipedia. AR_Computer_To_Terminate_Eyestrain_And_Myopia

https://eyewiki.org/AR_Computer_To_Terminate_Eyestrain_And_Myopia

Could you please tell me what should I do so that the reviewers knowing that I am the copyright owner instead of using other people's works, so as not to be mistakenly identified as infringing others' copyrights and be deleted?

Best regards and Happy New Year

Title error

Hi, Thanks for your message about my mistake the other day. Whilst working on a separate page I came across Bert Hitchen where his page title is wrong (should be Albert Hitchen). I left a message on Talk:Bert Hitchen, but could you sign post me as where to report errors similar to this in future please? best, tom Tom hutchison4 (talk) 00:44, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

If Albert Hitchen is the proper title, you can move the page yourself by following the steps at Wikipedia:Moving a page. If you are unable to complete a move for technical reasons, you can request the move at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 00:52, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

@Gerda Arendt: Happy new year my friend! The snow looks awesome, I hope you had a good time skiing. It's too warm for snow here in the southern U.S. though we did have some flurries at the start of the new year (no accumulation though). Thanks again for your help with Ludwig Zottmayr. I want to try and help an entertainment related article to A Class status. Do you have any suggestions that are already well written but need some work? SoyokoAnis - talk 13:12, 14 January 2022 (UTC)

@SoyokoAnis: A Class requires a formal review by a WikiProject. I believe it is currently only used by two WikiProjects: Military History and Tropical Cyclones. Draft:Human_Mind_Project

Hi DanCherek, thank you for your comments on the draft page I started Draft:Human_Mind_Project. I am new to wiki editing. I think this entry is still a draft, isn't it, and I am in the process of improving it before submitting. I started this draft by copying another entry this is why some portions of that copied entry are still there - when I finish drafting those will be removed. Please let me know if this works. I am happy to get other recommendations from you.Humannine (talk) 12:40, 7 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Humannine. It's still a draft and you are welcome to re-use text from other articles on Wikipedia, but please be sure to always provide attribution in the edit summary if you are copying from other Wikipedia articles, even in draftspace and even if it's just temporary. This is technically required by the terms of Wikipedia's license since the text was written by other contributors – and being a draft isn't an exemption to that requirement. Hope that helps. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 13:54, 7 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi DanCherek I think I have resolved this now by removing the copied content. Humannine (talk) 09:01, 18 January 2022 (UTC)

Question from TWSSportsPodcast (15:53, 19 January 2022)

Hi I would like to make a page about my podcast. Would that be possible --TWSSportsPodcast (talk) 15:53, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi TWSSportsPodcast, and welcome to Wikipedia. To be honest, I wouldn't recommend trying to create a page for your podcast because you will probably find that it is difficult to neutrally and verifiably write about things that you are personally associated with. If you decide to proceed, please read the conflict of interest guideline carefully, provide the necessary disclosures, and then see Help:Your first article. Finally, per Wikipedia's username policy, usernames should not represent the name of a group or imply shared use. I would suggest visiting Special:GlobalRenameRequest to request a new username that avoids these issues. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 21:39, 19 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi. I was hoping I could add myself in wikipedia- as a musician, author, healthcare professional. How can I get this done? Thanks! --Vhahamcruzm1 (talk) 21:00, 21 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Vhahamcruzm1, and welcome to Wikipedia! Writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is an example of conflict of interest editing and is strongly discouraged. It's difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography, and there are many pitfalls. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography#Creating an article about yourself for more information. Hope that helps! Take down the Larry Dale Brimner article, it’s lousy, poorly written and inaccurate. and he’s a thief and a scam artist. Brimner says on his web page he’s written more than 200 childrens books since 1987. How? By plagiarizing, theft and copyright infringement.

I know that first hand. I license my own photography from 1960s Civil Rights. He sought a license for a 2010 book “Birmingham Sunday.” Unwilling to pay my standard license fee, he bought a bootlegged copy and stole my copyright fee.

He never paid a dime for the stolen property. GE should known about copy right given all of his boasting about how many he holds.

He is now trying to republish “Birmingham Sunday” book in paperback and had his publisher contact me. It took me a while to dig through my files. My first thought was an absurdly high figure. Instead, Ijest refused.

I would not license that photo or any other to him. He’s already robbed me once and my impression is that I’m not the first.

If someone wants to do an article, it should be accurate and engage with the low work quality. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JosephMChapman (talkcontribs) 03:36, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

@JosephMChapman: Sorry, I have no idea what your message is about or why you are asking me about this. The English Wikipedia does not seem to have an article about Brimner and I have never heard of him before your message. DanCherek (talk) 04:22, 9 January 2022 (UTC)
Never mind, I see that the Larry Dane Brimner article does exist, though I only made a minor edit to the page back in November. Regardless, he seems to be a notable person so the article will not be deleted. I don't know anything about your dispute with him, sorry. That sounds like something you will have to try to resolve outside of Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 05:21, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

It should note he is a plagiarist and serial copy right abuser, not just of my work. It’s not my dispute with him, it is what I know is a pattern of practice. In fact, the Wikipedia article looks like a his web site bio. At 78 I don’t have time to deal with lawsuits etc. I will leave that to Getty which also holds copyrights he violated regularly. It appears as a self-promoter he wrote the article himself. I don’t really care! Just that it is not credible. I don’t give a rat’s ass. JosephMChapman (talk) 20:40, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Okay. Wikipedia articles are based on coverage in reliable secondary sources and I don't see any mentions of these copyright issues in a quick Google search, so again, this will have be resolved elsewhere. Please see Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons for an explanation of why particular care is taken with respect to articles about living people. DanCherek (talk) 20:46, 22 January 2022 (UTC)

Untitled message from 92.99.129.10

Hi do you have any proper reason for removing the article Avan Ivan (soundtrack). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.99.129.10 (talk) 12:07, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Yes. It was an improperly-performed split from Avan Ivan, and text had been copied from that parent article without providing proper attribution as detailed at Wikipedia:Splitting#How to properly split an article which is a violation of the terms of Wikipedia's license. Feel free to restore the soundtrack article if all the steps are properly followed. DanCherek (talk) 12:47, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

About List of number-one songs in 2022 (Turkey)

Hi. You have sent me a message and have told me that I had copy-pasted content from other pages. I see no problem there because the page I copied some information from was written by me. Therefore, I think there shouldn't be any problem. Have a nice day. Pinchface05 (talk) 21:45, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

@Pinchface05: You created a few similar pages for Turkey but the text ultimately originates from List of number-one singles of 2018 (Finland) which was written by another editor before you registered your Wikipedia account, so attribution is required. DanCherek (talk) 21:48, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
@DanCherek: Can you tell me how to attribute someone or redirect me to a page about that? Pinchface05 (talk) 21:50, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
Sure! It's pretty simple. In any edit where you copy text from another article, just note it in the edit summary and link to the copied page – for example, copied content from page name; see that page's history for attribution. There's more information at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. I've already done this for you at List of number-one songs in 2022 (Turkey), so please just keep it in mind for the future. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 21:53, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
So I don't have to do anything then. Right? Pinchface05 (talk) 22:19, 23 January 2022 (UTC)
You're all good for this article. Please do it yourself if you copy within Wikipedia in the future, and if you have copied material between pages before, you should provide attribution for that also. DanCherek (talk) 22:27, 23 January 2022 (UTC)

Copying content from within Wikipedia

Hello! Thanks for your review of my initial work, and the guidance on doing it right. As you noted, I have copied the Aubrey de Grey Wikipedia entry, and pasted it into my draft. As a newcomer, there is tons to learn, and finding detailed instruction is not always easy. The copy/paste action was simply to use an existing biography page as a newbie's template for the bio I am working on. In the end, my entries will have no content that in any way mentions or refers to de Grey. You instruction to give attribution does not appear to be very burdensome, but neither does it add value that I can think of. In those circumstances, is attribution still necessary? Walticular (talk) 18:45, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

@Walticular: Yes, whenever you copy content from another Wikipedia article, even if it's just temporary, you should provide attribution in the edit summary to indicate where you copied from. There are at least two reasons you should do this. The more important one is that this attribution is required by the terms of Wikipedia's license. The second reason is that if the edit is flagged as a potential copyright violation, as your edit was, it's helpful for the reviewing editor to see that it was copied within Wikipedia and not from another website. Hope that makes sense. Thanks! DanCherek (talk) 18:56, 24 January 2022 (UTC)

CopyRight Close Paraphrasing

Why is rewording a source still count as a copyright infringement? ScientistBuilder (talk) 13:06, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

Your edits to Ray tracing (graphics) and Physically based rendering only superficially modified the copyright source material. It was mostly slight reordering of words while retaining much of the original word choice and sentence structure. That is called close paraphrasing. I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). Hope that makes sense — let me know if you have any questions. DanCherek (talk) 13:12, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
Does the fact that there were bullet points in both cases contribute to the close paraphrasing example? ScientistBuilder (talk) 19:48, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
I used a paraphrasing machine learning artificial intelligence software. ScientistBuilder (talk) 19:49, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
No, it was the fact that you (or the software, I guess) left most of the words unchanged and only rearranged them slightly, or simply replaced some with their synonyms. Please don't use software to generate the text that you add to Wikipedia. You should be summarizing information from sources in your own words, from scratch. DanCherek (talk) 19:51, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
I have posted a note asking for help paraphrasing the article to add it as a source to the article on Ray Tracing's talk page. ScientistBuilder (talk) 21:49, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I agree that's a good idea. DanCherek (talk) 22:32, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

Ok if I know you have deleted my articles I don’t care instead of deleting you could have properly created those deleted articles again. Ok then provide a proper explanation for its deletion so that it would be clearly understandable if you write split requires attribution then it’s not understandable.

is it possible that you could create them properly?

User:Theoder2055 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 06:21, 27 January 2022

I didn't delete any of your articles. Here's what actually happened: a few days ago, you created numerous soundtrack articles by splitting off content from film articles. None of these contained the required attribution as detailed in the instructions at WP:SPLIT, and I went through them one by one, fixing all of them by hand. I then posted on your talk page asking you to do this yourself in the future.
So today it was frustrating to see that you had created another dozen soundtrack articles, all without attribution, and with logged-out editing on many of these articles making it difficult to see exactly what had been copied from where. I redirected many of these back to the main articles because you can't just continuously expect other editors to clean up after you. Before you create any more new articles, please carefully read Wikipedia:Splitting#How to properly split an article, including step 4, which is critical. Feel free to ask here or at the Teahouse if anything is unclear. Thanks. DanCherek (talk) 06:35, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

Ok fine I am extremely sorry for adding soundtrack articles. I just wanted to check whether I am able to create an article so first I started editing soundtrack articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theoder2055 (talkcontribs) 07:18, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

@Theoder2055: Thanks for your understanding. You are allowed to create soundtrack articles but can you add this one step when you are creating each new page? Up to now, your edit summary when creating new pages has been something like "Creating an article for ______ Soundtrack". Instead, I'm just asking that you use the edit summary to indicate where you are copying content from – for example, "Moved from page name, see its history for attribution". I hope that makes sense. DanCherek (talk) 12:23, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
Hi DanCherek how do we add a request to create seperate article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theoder2055 (talkcontribs) 09:15, 28 January 2022 (UTC)
If you'd like to propose a split, see Wikipedia:Splitting#Procedure, steps 1 to 3. That lays it out in great detail. If you think the split is uncontroversial and you'd just like to boldly do it, then just follow the steps at Wikipedia:Splitting#How to properly split an article, including attribution in the edit summary. Hope that make sense. DanCherek (talk) 12:39, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

DYK for Paul Gutama Soegijo

On 29 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Paul Gutama Soegijo, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Paul Gutama Soegijo travelled from Germany to Indonesia to study the gamelan instruments of Java for eight years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Paul Gutama Soegijo. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Paul Gutama Soegijo), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Editing

Dear DanCherek, you keep removing my edits to a profile of Mr Mbalula. The information that I correct on the profile is correct information as I am one of his advisors and know his history. You will also note that you have his birthday listed as the 8th April 1971 when in fact his birthday is 1st April 1971. You can see all is by simply looking at his official twitter handle. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alpaps (talkcontribs) 03:39, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

A few things:
 1. Since you have been editing the article of someone you are advising, please read the conflict of interest guidelines and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies. Note that COI editors are discouraged from editing affected articles directly, but may propose changes on talk pages by using the request edit template so that they can be peer reviewed.
 2. Please stop copying text from other websites that are not compatibly licensed. It is a copyright violation and will be removed every time.
 3. The existing citation in the article mentions 8 April as his birthday; if that is incorrect, please provide a new citation to a reliable source that supports 1 April.

Articles on ASUDEV

Sir The Articles being uploaded on wikipedia is from the archives of my father ASU DEV, as I have been creating the Wikipedia page, it contains materials images and text which are written on the Artist ASUDEV and I am responsible to use the articles published during his time. The original articles are written on the life and times of my father, ASU DEV a pioneer painter of Assam India. His website www.artofasudev.org contains all the articles and images. I hope this will not be any infringement of any such copyrights issues. Thanking You Yours sincerely Anutosh Deb — Preceding unsigned comment added by Debanutosh (talkcontribs) 15:35, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

There are a few issues here. Since you have been editing a draft about your father, please read the conflict of interest guidelines and provide the proper disclosure as required by Wikipedia's policies. Additionally, Wikipedia can't accept text copied from those previously published articles just because they've been republished on your website. The copyright holder of each article (typically the author and/or the publisher, depending on the specific situation) would need to release it under a compatible license. Finally, even if they were compatibly licensed, copy-and-pasting a series of articles back-to-back is not an appropriate format for a Wikipedia page. DanCherek (talk) 15:41, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

Sir, The authors of the articles aren't alive at this moment, and since most of the articles were related to the work and time of my father, a pioneer artist of Assam, I feel it is my in interest of the society at large to bring out the published works related to the life of the artist. Being the legal owner of the rights and content related to the work of an Artist even though being my father does not infringe the copyrights violations as they are not aimed towards any financial liabilities, but cater to the study and research of Art in my region. I am not infringing into any others work in any capacityDebanutosh (talk) 16:57, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

That interpretation is not correct. Copyright typically persists even after the original author's death and regardless of whether the use of the material is "aimed towards any financial liabilities" (and even then, Wikipedia's license permits commercial reuse). It does not qualify as fair use in this case since there is a free equivalent, which is summarizing the sources in your own words. DanCherek (talk) 17:03, 30 January 2022 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

Congrats on completing Wall-to-wall coverage - I thought that was about the hardest Challenge I had, so I'll have to up the ante. ;) I was wondering who would be the first to work out that you could use TFA/DYK requests for significant dates to guarantee at least a couple of things running simultaneously. Still, pulling it off is much harder than it is to plan it in theory. — Bilorv (talk) 15:59, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
Thanks Bilorv! It was a hard one indeed. I kept vacillating between worrying that the ITN nomination would be posted too early and cycle out before the other two, and worrying that it wouldn't receive enough attention to be posted until after the DYK had left the Main Page. Glad things worked out in the end   Looking forward to tackling some more of the topic-specific challenges soon! DanCherek (talk) 16:05, 29 January 2022 (UTC)

I'm not an administrator so I can't block anyone. Do you have specific diffs of disruptive edits? It doesn't seem like blatant WP:VANDALISM to me, so you should probably file a report at WP:ANI if you are seeing a persistent problem with their edits. Thanks! Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution

Hey Dan,

I'm new to wiki so for the Henry Cushier Raven article I wrote, I copied a random page's template of a man with similar background as Raven. The article I wrote kept nothing from the copied page, other than the general template. Do I need to disclose the copying and link to the copied page in that case?

(DavidH86 (talk) 20:04, 5 February 2022 (UTC))

Any time you copy text from another Wikipedia article that you did not originally write yourself, you should provide attribution in the edit summary, even if it's temporary. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 22:28, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

You added the Proposed deletion notify template to the article, rather than the Proposed deletion template. The former is designed to notify the page creator that the page is being proposed for deletion. DanCherek (talk) 14:46, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Question from Atifgg000 on Wikipedia:Link rot (12:09, 9 February 2022)

wate is seo --Atifgg000 (talk) 12:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

"SEO" usually refers to search engine optimization which is when people try to make their website appear higher in the results of search engines such as Google. See Wikipedia:Search engine optimization for how this relates to links in Wikipedia. DanCherek (talk) 13:27, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Francis Bourgeois

It should be obvious that there is no primary topic for this name right now. He has the undisambiguated title, and HE SHOULD NOT. If you think a super fucking obscure painter from the 1800s is more of a """primary topic""" than someone who has had recent coverage in the news, you are not considering the reader. wizzito | say hello! 19:58, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Yes, I might have fucked up with my request BUT it should be obvious per Vaticidalprophet's comments in the discussion that there is no primary topic right now wizzito | say hello! 19:58, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
That's a valid opinion, but it wasn't the outcome determined by consensus at Talk:Francis Bourgeois (trainspotter)#Requested move 2 January 2022. You're welcome to contest the closure of that discussion at Wikipedia:Move review, or to initiate a new move discussion, but you can't just proceed with a page move like that as if the discussion didn't exist. DanCherek (talk) 20:08, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
I thought that people were voting AGAINST moving the trainspotter to the undisambig title, not where there's no ptopic because I formatted the discussion wrong. wizzito | say hello! 20:10, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for starting a new move discussion. I think it's best to follow proper procedures so I'm glad you did that. DanCherek (talk) 22:03, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Commissioner information removed from page response

I work for the Texas Department of Information and have permission to reuse the language posted on our website. We are a state agency and the as far as I know we don't copywrite our stuff on the website. Jennifer Beale — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeninatx (talkcontribs) 21:54, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

Actually, content on the Texas Department of Insurance website is not compatibly licensed by default: the terms of use do not allow commercial use, which is incompatible with Wikipedia. A couple of other things: if you expect to receive compensation for any contribution you make, please provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and articles should be based on reliable, independent, secondary sources.
I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests. You may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 11:56, 11 July 2021 (UTC)

I don't understand your response. I am a state employee and the social media editor for the agency, I'm not being specifically to edit the page. Someone noticed the information on the commissioner was incorrect and that there were a couple of dead links. I am simply making updates to correct incorrect information. We are a state agency an need to ensure that the information is correct. I realized I forgot to include the additional reference information and was going back to add it when the text was deleted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeninatx (talkcontribs) 22:10, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

As a social media editor who is editing the article of your employer, you are considered a paid editor and should disclose your status as detailed above. The text that you twice added to the article was removed because it is not compatibly licensed according to the terms of the TDI website. You can have the text released under a compatible license or summarize information from reliable sources in your own words, but either way you should propose changes using an edit request on the article's talk page. The outdated information (that there is no commissioner) has already been removed in the meantime. DanCherek (talk) 22:15, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
