Ha! I was waiting on YOU! edit

Sorry, Eagle, I didn't realize you were waiting on me, heh heh heh!

OK, so I think it's been well established now that the topic-sorting function of gnomebot is NOT needed. I still think some of the tag-adding functions ARE. The biggest remaining needs, I think, are STUB, WIKIFY, and especially UNCATEGORIZED. cleanup-list and disambig-cleanup would also be nice to run but I don't think there will be much need.

The attention sorting system now being run by Pearle is taking care of a LOT of what we originally thought Gnome (Bot) was going to do, so now Gnome's tasks are a lot smaller and not so urgent. If you want to also use the bot for its original tasks I think we can do that now. The pressure is off. :-) But you've been a GREAT collaborator, and I want to tell you I really appreciate all the work you've done! I also think that work shouldn't go to waste, which is another reason I'd like to keep those tag-adding routines.

One final comment: I think you get excited sometimes and don't copy-edit your posts; I notice a number of typos, spelling and grammar errors in your work sometimes. Neatness counts! If you want to get ahead in your work, be it at school or in a job, it pays sometimes to go over your words and error check them. Just some friendly advice from someone who's been over the ropes sometimes!

Best of luck, both on and off Wikipedia! Alba 15:25, 5 May 2006 (UTC)

VP edit

I logged on with IE (which was on as my bot account) made sure I clicked "remember me" and then re-started VP. The warning came up on the welcome page - I clicked Yes and it's now wokring, except that I have to do the rollback by hand. Perhaps I need popups? Rich Farmbrough 00:24 7 May 2006 (UTC).

THanks. Documentation imlied that Ver 1.1 wouldn't need it. Rich Farmbrough 00:29 7 May 2006 (UTC).
Sorry, Eagle, I need to go now. Will update you tomorrow. Thanks for your help. Rich Farmbrough 00:34 7 May 2006 (UTC).
I've updated the documentation ([1]), but I've still to confirm that the "remember me" box needs to be ticked. I'm pretty sure that's what enables cookies on the server, but not 100% so I've left that out. My I.E. is being used for User:SmackBot for a while, so I'll test again later. Rich Farmbrough 09:13 7 May 2006 (UTC).
P.S. I notice you've found and fixed the references to V 1.1 and popups. Well done. Rich Farmbrough 09:18 7 May 2006 (UTC).

Common problems edit

4 my man... how many should there be? - Glen TC (Stollery) 08:20, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

WEIRD!!! Now its showing five!;

Common Problems edit

  1. When I press update, nothing happens. Check that you are not using "Enhanced Recent Changes." This can be set under my preferences in Wikipedia.
  2. Rollback is not working or VandalProof is not leaving edit summaries. Unfortunately, VandalProof is currently dependent upon popups, though the next release after version 1.1.0 will not be. Adding {{subst:navpop}} to your monobook.js will fix this problem.
  3. Annoying error messages every time VP loads a page. Try loading your monobook.js within Internet Explorer and doing a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5). If that does not work, see Temporary Fix for Javascript Error Messages.
  4. Revert Buttons go 'inactive' after program is in use for a while Go to This handy dandy guide for specific instructions.
  5. Other annoying problems not mentioned above Try looking in the new FAQ/Troubleshooting guide---If the solution is not there, than your problem is probably a bug, go to the Bug Report Page for more infomation.
Guess that's good news!? - Glen TC (Stollery) 08:28, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Mod Edit Probs... edit

I can't sort it out. It works just fine for my User:AmiDaniel TestAccount, which similarily has a space in the username. Maybe just a fluke that one time? Try a couple more test edits and check to see if they appear. The one strange thing was that, in the revision history, when it linked your username it linked it to "/wiki/User:Eagle 101" as opposed to "/wiki/User:Eagle_101", which is what VP expected. Strange ... AmiDaniel TestAccount 08:44, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Try again. I made a very slight change, and I'd be absolutely shocked if it made a difference--but it might. AmiDaniel (Talk) 08:48, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Films based on books edit

Thanks for starting the children's film categories. I see that you're busy, so I appreciate the help! Cheers, Her Pegship 23:52, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Paleorthid edit

Aack. I am absolutely sure I messed up using VP. User:Avenue now shows with a BL and WL in red in the main space heading, and has a "- W" added to the user name for aticles in my watchlist space. So the W and B buttons are not innocent ways to Watch and uh Befriend someone. Can you assist me in making this right? -- Paleorthid 03:01, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Hope you don't mind my butting in Eagle (I'll likely get an edit conflict anyway). The B and W buttons add the user to your blacklist and whitelist, respectively. I'm working on getting it so that when you blacklist a user it also removes him from the whitelist and vice versa, but it's not there yet. Anyway, back to the point. What you did is blacklist and whitelist User:Avenue, and it's pretty simple to correct. Just go over to your User Lists tab, go down to Black List and scroll until you find his name. Click on it and then click "Delete from List" (note that there is a slight bug that if he's the only one in your blacklist it may not work the first time). You can do the same on Whitelist, if you want to remove him from that list instead/too. Feel free to ask me or Eagle if you have any more problems, or if you need more assistance with this one. AmiDaniel (talk) 03:08, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

Nervermind - I figured it out as Blacklist and Whitelist. A little slow witted tonight... (relieved) -- Paleorthid 03:12, 8 May 2006 (UTC)

OOPS, I was NOT online last night, kudos to AmiDaniel, thanks:-)Eagle talk 23:54, 9 May 2006 (UTC)

vandalproof edit

Thank you very much, that was very kind of you. ILovePlankton (TCUL) 00:08, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

it was very kind of you for taking care of it so quickly (I would have expected to wait atleast 3-4 days) and for telling me he put it on the abuse page (I didn't know that). ILovePlankton (TCUL) 00:17, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof problems (solution found) edit

Yes, I still have problems with the loadup. I have to use "try logging into Wiki" everytime, no matter what I have IE set to. It changes only worked briefly when I wrote of it before. Thanks for keeping an eye on things. Rlevse 01:08, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

  • IE6, SP2, eventhough I'm already logged into VP via a separate browser window, when I start VP I always get "The page cannot be displayed" inside VP and a brief flash of another screen I can't read because it's there a split second then the screen "Your log in request failed". If I click on that window's option 2 "Try logging into Wikipedia", it will work. This happens regardless of what I have my temp Internet settings or LAN settings set to. Rlevse 22:05, 10 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Yes, XP Pro. Usually, I open an IE window, and log into Wiki before I start VP. Does it matter if I do this first or not? Rlevse 22:43, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

I get the same error whether I open a separate IE window and log into Wiki first or not. Rlevse 22:44, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Any progress on this? Do you need more info? Rlevse 23:57, 10 May 2006 (UTC)

Let's use your page from now on. Rlevse 01:58, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Response 1 edit

Ok sorry about that, please make new messages a new line, else I can't tell just glancing at it. Thanks.

Being that we both seem to have the same operating system and version of IE, I am going to start at the begginning.

1)Verify that you are accepting all cookies.

2)I have already double checked your popups, they are fine.

3)Is IE your main browser, or do you use firefox?

I have more info, pending your responses:-).Eagle talk 00:02, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Response to Response 1 edit

1) How do I verify if I am accepting all cookies? 2) OK 3) I only use IE. Thanks for the help, Rlevse 01:42, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Eagle response edit

Ok, thank you for understanding:-) Give me a couple minutes to formulate a set of instructions... look back in 20 minutes (I think I have my program debuged!!!) plus I need to get some good directions for you.Eagle talk 02:02, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
P.S. Make sure you put sections headers or something, so I can clearly tell when you speak... It makes looking at past info you gave me easier:-).

First set of instructions edit

  1. Go to control Panel.
  2. Click on internet options.
  3. When the internet options window comes up, look at the top. There are a set of "tabs". (it opens up on the "tab" general). Locate and click on the privacy tab.
  4. On this tab should be a header called 'settings'.
  5. Tell me what it is set to. (this is your cookie settings, Microsoft just does not make that clear).

--Eagle talk 19:54, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • "Settings" is set to medium and "Popup blocker" is set to "Block popups". No need to apologize for last night, you're volunteering to help me, afterall. Rlevse 20:49, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

I 2 edit

  1. Ok, try this... close everything, except for IE.
  2. Go to your monobook [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rlevse/monobook.js Your monobook
  3. Then hit Ctrl+F5, this will purge your web browser.

Try logging in and out, and refreshing your browser at the monobook screen. Give me the results:-)

P.S. Don't forget to actually try VandalProof. (with all windows, including IE closed)... This will reamin the same, no matter what instructions I give you.:-)Eagle talk 20:56, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
  • Chtrl-F5 yielded this: "The requested page title was invalid, empty, an incorrectly linked inter-language or inter-wiki title, or contained illegal characters. Return to Main Page." Logging into VP, with all windows, even IE closed, yielded same results I've been getting. ALso, I have a mtg to go to, so I'll be inactive in 90 minutes or so, but will return later tonight. Rlevse 21:03, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
    • Where did you hit Ctrl+F5?, (this may be your problem)Eagle talk 21:05, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
  1. Nevermind, go to this link [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rlevse/monobook.js Your monobook
  2. Then hit Ctrl+F5, this will purge your web browser.

My fault, I put a bad link:-(Eagle talk 21:08, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Now I have this:*

Note: After saving, you have to bypass your browser's cache to see the changes. Mozilla/Safari/Konqueror: hold down Shift while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R), IE: press Ctrl-F5, Opera: press F5.

// User:Lupin/popups.js

document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'

            + '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></script>');

and when I hit Ctrl-F5, nothing appears to change. Then I closed IE, opened VP and got same results as before. Rlevse 21:22, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes, I sent you to your own monobook, when you purge, does the screen 'flicker'? Purgeing the browser forces it to reload everything, make sure when you do this you have NO other windows open. Please try agian, and log out/log in (check the box "remember me"). Nothing special happens that you can see. Tell me if this works:-)Eagle talk 21:27, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes, it flickered before and this time. Eventhough I clicked "remember me", it doesn't remember me. I logged out and in a few times. Same results on VP.Rlevse 21:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Remember Me edit

Does it "remember" you in your normal browser? or is it only VandalProof (for now on VP).?Eagle talk 21:41, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

It doesn't remember me in the regular browser nor inside VP. Rlevse 21:43, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
lol, ok... then the problem is not VP it is IE. (should have figured... Microsoft...) Give me a couple minutes (5-10), I am going to give you some new instructions, chances are you will not have done this set before.:-).Eagle talk 21:47, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Administrator? edit

Please double check to make sure that you are a administrator on your computor.(ask if you don't know how) I am going to ask you to do a couple thingsEagle talk 21:59, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes, I am an admin. Rlevse 22:05, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok more stuff to look up edit

  1. Go to internet options
  2. Under 'general' > 'Browsing History' > click the buttion called "settings..."
  3. Sorry, but tell me what everything in there is set to. (I am trying less drastic stuff first... I hope to not take advantage of the fact that you are an admin on your computer)

Eagle talk 22:12, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • There is no "Browsing History". If you mean "Temporary Internet Files", it's set to automatic. Rlevse 22:15, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Groans... ok, I hate to tell you this... but open up the general tab, and tell me the setting of EVERYTHING on that tab. (this includes looking at every butten. (whats inside).Eagle talk 22:20, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Home page address: http://www.hamptonroads.com/pilotonline/
  • TempInternetFiles/Settings/Check for newer versions of saved pages: Automatic
  • TempInternetFiles/Cookies - deleted all cookies
  • TempInternetFiles/Delete Files - deleted all files, including offline content
  • History: cleared history
  • Color/Font - can't possibly be a factor
  • Languages - English and Thai (wife is Thai)
  • Accesability - no boxes selected

Rlevse 22:28, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

    • Remember me still doesn't work. I have to go to my mtg now. I may or may not be able to get back to this tonight, but will tomorrow evening. Thanks for helping. Rlevse 22:31, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Did you delete that stuff??? just clarifying?Eagle talk 22:32, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Yes, where it says I deleted stuff, I actually did it. Rlevse 01:22, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Try this edit

Ok, lets do a test. The results of this test should tell me what the problem is. Note It may NOT fix the problem, but once you do it, feel free to try:-).

Follow these steps to the letter...

  1. Close your browser
  2. Re-delete everything
  3. Re-start your computer
  4. Open your browser and log into wikipedia, don't forget to click remember-me (If you don't click this, start over)
  5. After you log in, close the browser
  6. Go to this address on your computer... It contians your cookies. C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
  7. Tell me what you see... hopefully a cookie from wikipedia. (either way, we will know what the problem is:-)

I will be off the wiki for the rest of today, so I will check back tomarrow.Eagle talk 01:45, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

  • OK, I did step 2 first as the buttons aren't available when the browser is closed. I did step 2 second. I logged in, clicking "remember me". I closed the browser, went to the folder in question and there's only this: a Content.IE5 folder and a Desktop.ini file. It did not remember me when I next logged in. BUT then I closed the browser (only thing that was open) and then opened VP, first gave me a "page cannot be displayed msg and then logged me in without fiving me the "try logging into wiki" screen. Then I closed VP and brought up a new browser session and I was still logged into Wiki. I think we're on the right track. I have to go now. I'll see what happens when I reboot the computer next. Still only those same 2 items in Temp Internt files folder. Rlevse 10:10, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, sounds good, check what is in your cookie file next as well. (see if there is something related to wikipedia. (this is what wikipedia uses to tell who you are. Vandalproof only checks to see if the username that you are logged in as matches the username that you are trying to log in as in vandalproof. (keep in mind this is not VP's fault... rather something is not set right in your brower.)Eagle talk 18:37, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

NOTE: you can access internet settings outside of the browser. Click the start button(on the taskbar in windows... same place you go to shut down computer) One of the menu buttons should say Control Panal. Click that. Internet settings are in this folder, just look.Eagle talk 18:40, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Now I just turned my computer on, ran VP and got the "try logging into Wiki" screen; then closed VP; opened a separate browser and logged into Wiki; closed that separate browser; then opened VP and it logged me in even though there are no new files in the SYSTEM32 "temp internet files (TIF)". So, it lost the log in info on rebooting but remembers it once I log into wiki and don't reboot. I still get the "page cannot be displayed" screen before it logs me in. What page is it looking for and is this how it is supposed to work? My computer does not use the SYSTEM32 TIF folder. I've noticed it uses (purged), where there are several wiki files. What are the names of the wiki files I should be looking for? Rlevse 22:04, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, tell me what you have. we have this problem cornered. (I am going to ask the programmer what specific one you need to have, but in the meantime as a programmer myself I will be able to tell which one it is given a list:-)Eagle talk 22:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

The problem all along was cookies... lol:-) perhaps santa has been robbing you???Eagle talk 22:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
  • There were 1700+ files in my TIF folder, so I deleted them. All I did was bring up my IE to the default page and log into wiki, now there are 1300+ files. I've also noticed that if I open a separate IE and log into wiki and leave it open or close it without logging out of wiki, VP will pick up the log in and log in automatically, BUT if I log out of wiki in that separate browser, it will give me the "try logging into wiki" screen. Again, what page is also generating the "page cannot be found" I get for a few seconds and is this normal? Can we make VP always log me in even if I haven't logged into wiki separately first? Rlevse 22:37, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Page not found edit

yes the Page not found is normal, I get it every time as well... Give me a few minutes with the cookies:-)

OH LOL, duh... if you log out, vandalproof requires that you log in, (else how can the program verify you against the approved user list). The question is, does it work if you are logged in? and the "remember me" check box is checked?Eagle talk 22:51, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

If everyone gets the "page not found", that'd seem like a bug. It does seem to work if I am logged in. But before you came along, it never worked. Rlevse 23:11, 12 May 2006 (UTC) Oh, "remember me" still doesn't work. Rlevse 23:13, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
The "page not found" is not a bug, the programmer choose to display that while it is loading the page for you. Else it would have to display a blank page. Trust me blank pages make users nervous:-). I know this because I do the same to some of my applications.
Give me 1 moment with the remember me tag. Right now I am happy that you can use it.Eagle talk 23:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, the remember me tag is not supposed to be on when you log out and log in, I checked with my own account. Hold on for more instructions
I would rather have a blank page than a "page not found" as that tells me something isn't working. I can't believe Daniel chose that. Why doesn't he display an "attempting to log in" msg or something? Rlevse 23:33, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
You may be right, but remember this is a development version. (beta). I am sure once the program is stable, a more elaborate login message will be displayed. But for the record, NOTHING is wrong. When he manages to get rid of all of the bugs, than perhaps we can bring up this, but remember more important is bugs:-). Eagle talk 23:37, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Note do you see my instructions below?Eagle talk
I toyed around with having it load about:blank at startup, but I found that quite disquieting as a user, and I tried displaying custom messages within the browser, but the problem is that I need a lot of processor power at the startup, and the browser control would not display the text until the preceding time-consuming tasks were done. You should, however, see above the browser a gray box that indicates "Connecting..." and "Retrieving user list..." If you don't see that, then that would be a bug (and probably related to processor use, as I hinted above). AmiDaniel (talk) 23:41, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
  • That makes a little more sense, but simple html file with a short msg wouldn't overload a processor. The page error really is disconcerting. For mine, the "connecting..." msg is there a fraction of second and the "retrieving" one so briefly I can't even read it. For the record, I'd REALLY like to not have to change the edit limit everfy time I start it. 20 makes it scroll and I don't like having to scroll, 12 is just right. Please add in the capability to change this, probably the best route would be to use that text file in the VP directory. thanks for a fine program, overall I really like it and I HATE VANDALS!.-;) Rlevse 23:53, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Let's hit the wall from a new angle edit

Ok, we have established that it is your computer that is the problem. I want a couple things

  1. If you close the browser without logging out, and reopen the browser, are you logged in.
  2. Ditto for vandal proof. Log in using the browser, close it without logging out, and bring up VP. Does it log you in automatically.
  3. The final test. Shut down your computer(restart will do), and then open your web browser and go to wikipedia. Are you logged in?
  4. The "really" final test. Shut down your computer(restart will do) and open VP, are you logged in?

Good luck!!! After this we will know where we stand, lets hope for 4 "yes, I'm logged in" :-)Eagle talk 23:27, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Yes to all 4 questions. Rlevse 23:48, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

In that case, I believe that purging your cookie directory was the solution:-)... notice the past tense there, Congratulations and thank you for your good efforts on helping me fix it. PROBLEM SOLVED.

P.S. Note if you EVER have problems agian you know who to look for:-). lets hope its 4 yesses tomarrow as well. Please let me know!!!Eagle talk 23:55, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank YOU for stepping and checking on me and helping so much! Rlevse 00:00, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Welcome to VandalProof! (solution found:-) edit

Thank you for your interest in VandalProof, Nixeagle/Talk/Archive/4! You have now been added to the list of authorized users, so if you haven't already, simply download and install VandalProof from our main page. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me or any other moderator, or you can post a message on the discussion page. Eagle talk 19:07, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Hello! I have downloaded and installed the tool but it keeps telling me that I have not logged in to WP correctly. My username is set correctly as (aeropagitica). I have logged in to WP using the link in the dialog box but it still persists. I noticed that my name had been added to the list of authorised users as %28aeropagitica%29, so I changed it to the above. Could this be the problem?  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  20:02, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

please explain. I can tell you right now what your problem is. the program does not like those "()"'s. I know how to work this around, but I need to know what you changed. Eagle talk 20:05, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

The list of authorised users had me down as %28aeropagitica%29, so I changed it to the correct (aeropagitica).  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  20:10, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Tell me if you can log in.Eagle talk 20:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I get "You might have entered an incorrect username. Currently, your username is set to %28aeropagitica%29."  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  20:27, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I have notified 5 other mods (there are 11 total) that are on now, or will be comming on soon. It is out of my hands now. Please try agian, using your normal username agian every hour or so. If someone notifies me, or I see the change I will post here to tell you the good news!!!Eagle talk 20:51, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

If you have any other problems, please let me know.
Many thanks for your assistance with this. I can't log on at the moment but I will try again later on and also wait for yours or another mods message to say that I have access. Regards,  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  20:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Try now, a mod just null edited for me. Eagle talk 20:55, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Nope, the logon still doesn't like my username, even when I log on to WP through the link provided in the dialog box.  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  20:59, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
I did it, let me know if that helps. Prodego talk 20:54, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Hey, (aeropagitca). Your username actually caused me a lot of drama when I was first developing the app, because you're the very first one on the list of active admins and I had a lot of trouble with the formatting of your username. I believe that I have the problem fixed in the next version, but I'm not certain. User:That Guy, From That Show! had similar problems due the exclamation point, and so I believe I've now cured it for all the funny-character-containing usernames. So please sit tight until I release v1.2, hopefully within the next week (sorry for how long this one's taken me). Sorry for the inconvenience. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:11, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

VP (Solution found) edit

Please add a further comment on my talk with the page you want a null edit on, and I'll do it fairly quickly. Thanks. —       nathanrdotcom (Got something to say? Say it.) 21:04, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof capitalizes the first letter in the username internally, right? It must for "jpkoester1" (incorrectly lowercase on the list) to work. But the first letter in (aeropagitica) is a lowercase "a". You would need to ask AmiDanial what it would do with the parenthesis, but that could be it. Prodego talk 21:09, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, I left this here. That last message wasn't all that important, so I left it there. Normally I wouldn't but since it was so minor... ;-) Prodego talk 21:12, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Try my idea too. In VandalProof, try changing your username (File -> Set username). If it says %28aeropagitica%29 change it to (aeropagitica) if it is (aeropagitica) change it to %28aeropagitica%29. If that doesn't work, I still have an idea. Prodego talk 21:03, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Hello! I have used both %28 %29 and ( ) in my attempts to log on with Prodego's prompting. I have managed to get on twice but it has taken about four attempts to do so, with logging on to the tool initially, then to WP through the dialog link, then changing my username from ( ) to %28 %29 and back again. There may still be a glitch somewhere. Sorry about jumping postings, I didn't want to disrupt what may have been another thread, my mistake!  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  21:15, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok, so you have successfully logged in??Eagle talk 21:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

the other problems you are having I will get to in a moment. (has to do with cookies, but one thing at a time!!!)Eagle talk 21:18, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I have successfully logged in, it just took some time to do so! This may be the cookie problem to which you refer.  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  21:21, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Glad I could help, I suppose (aeropagitica) uses Firefox to be having the cookie problem? (Cookies not enabled on IE, but enabled on Firefox, and you need cookies to log in to Wikipedia, so it works for editing in Firefox) Prodego talk 21:23, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Yes, that is my line of thinking as well.Eagle talk 21:37, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I am assuming that you know how to do this, as you followed our conclusions very well, if you don't feel free to ask!!Eagle talk 21:33, 12 May 2006 (UTC)

I have set the cookies option to 'accept all cookies' (Tools > Internet Options > Privacy). I'll let you know if I have any more problems. Many thanks for all of your assistance with this problem! Regards,  (aeropagitica)  (talk)  21:40, 12 May 2006 (UTC)
Oops, looks like you got the problem solved already. Disregard my above comment. Sorry for all the inconvenience, and I'm glad you got it worked out. AmiDaniel (talk) 00:13, 13 May 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about not mentioning me, I was just joking ;-) Prodego talk 14:04, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Vandal Proof... edit

I'm having trouble logging into VandalProof. Any suggestions?--Eva db 08:39, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof help is here!!!(response to above) edit

Ok, first off lets have this whole conversation on my page, so we can keep this togather. (any new tips that are learned from this I want to be able to pass to others... this conversation will actually have some value for others:-). Also I don't feel like jumping pages, especially if we don't find the solution right off of the bat:-).

Thank you:-)
P.S. normally when the light in the upper-right of my talk page is yellow or green, I will respond very quickly.

Popups edit

Ok, first off, I noticed that you do not have popups in your monobook.js, so we are going to need to add these first:-)

Go to your monobook and add {{subst:navpop}}. This line will expand out to the proper code. I would do this for you, but for some reason you have your monobook protected:-(.
Note, this will not help you log in, but this will prevent problems after you manage to log in. Basically you need the "revert" ablility that this code provides. (the next version of vandalproof will be popup independent, i.e. you can remove this from your monobook)Eagle talk 19:15, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Some questions so I can better figure out what is your problem edit

  1. What browser do you normally use to edit wikipedia? (Include version number please)
  2. Do you log in every time you use wikipedia, or do you use the "remember me" checkbox?
  3. What is your operating system?
  4. Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 of how computer competent you are? (1=I know nothing, I just click and it works, 10=you know how to program at a beginner level or higher any programming language)... I ask this so I have a clue of what you know and don't know:-). I rate myself a 10 as I program C++, and a little C#, plus assorted others.
  5. ok, enough questions, with responses to these I will be able to start:-).

Thank you for allowing me to help you, and please remember to check my talk page for the duration of this conversation:-)Eagle talk 19:15, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof edit

Another user with the same problem as before, ^demon. I tried to fix it, but this looks to be harder since the ASCII hex code (that is what to use right?) has a letter in it. You may want to look at it.

I had noticed that he is part of a rather large band, many of whom are students. If someone disagrees with them, either on content or (their) approach, they all attack like a swarm of hornets. One of their best tactics is to get the victim on the move with insults. Naturally they all club together, if one of them is about to become an admin. Wallie 19:12, 17 May 2006 (UTC)

Sukh's RFA - Thanks! edit

Thank you for your vote on my RfA. Unfortunately there was no consensus reached at 43 support, 18 oppose and 8 neutral. I've just found out that there is a feature in "my preferences" that forces me to use edit summaries. I've now got it enabled :) Thanks again. Sukh | ਸੁਖ | Talk 15:52, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

VandalProof 1.2 Now Available edit

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:19, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

RE: Urgent edit

No, there's a slight timer now, so it may take a while for the page to render. If it doesn't return to its normal form then this may be a bug. AmiDaniel (talk) 02:53, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

The Cottage School copyedit edit

Thanks for your help there - it looks a lot better. I think that pretty much covers everything actually - I put the tag up simply because the layout was so disorganised, that's been sorted impeccably :-). I can't really comment on the content as I don't know anything much about it, I stumbled across it while doing a recent changes patrol. Many thanks, Chrisd87 09:03, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer of putting me on VandalProof - that'd be great please. I'd seen the page about the software, and was waiting for the 250 edit point before applying. Regards, Chrisd87 17:32, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

No worries at all, many thanks once again for your help. Chrisd87 17:52, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
message received and understood, no problem at all. Chrisd87 18:49, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

got your message about approval for VandalProof, but can't seem to get it to accept me as an authorised user. Any ideas? Chrisd87 17:06, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

disregard last message, working now. Many thanks for inviting me onto VandalProof Chrisd87 17:09, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

Vandal Proof edit

Hey, for some reason, after I downloaded vandal proof, installed it, and followed all of the directions it still dosen't work. It actually lets me run the Vandal Proof program, but as soon as i started it, it says I do not have the correct user name. Please help. Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:22, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Well, now it says that I have a runtime path error. Should I just use an earlier version, or will that have no effect?Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:35, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
The error is (run-time error "75" Path/File acces error). does that help? Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:38, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Thats fine edit

Thank you, I really appreciate your help. Thanks again, Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:28, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

My answers edit

I use internet Explorer to edit.

I log in every time I use Wikipedia

My operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Version 2002

Finally I am about a 2.5 on computer competence.

Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:45, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Clarifications edit

Ok, I need to clarify 2 of the questions.

  1. What version of IE(internet explorer) do you use?
  2. Do you click the log in butten every time you enter wikipedia, or are you always logged in, (i.e. the computer remembers you)?

Give me responses to those and I will be able to start.Eagle talk 01:50, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I use IE version 6.0
I click the log in button every time I enter Wikipedia.

Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:54, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

AHA!!! edit

Ok, based on I click the log in button every time I enter Wikipedia. I am going to have you check and see if you have cookies enabled. (do you know how? if not yell at me)Eagle talk 01:56, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I know how be right back. Thetruthbelow(talk) 01:57, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
It says my cookie enabling level is medium Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:00, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Actually I believe you need to have cookies enabled to log in at all, if Thetruthbelow uses IE, they must be on. Also I mentioned on Thetruthbelow's talk page to make sure to do a hard refresh of the monobook.js file. Prodego talk 02:02, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I did, and the popups are working. I can see the page before I enter it and all the other items are displayed. Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:03, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Found problem edit

it still says on the VP program that I am not a registered user. Did you already add me to the list? Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:06, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Uh, you are on the approved user list...Eagle talk 02:10, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Ok, try one more thing, uninstall and reinstall VP v1.2 Eagle talk 02:11, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
ok but follow this link to see a picture of my screen when the error came up.

[2]

I found the problem, VandalProof dosen't think you're a moderator Eagle, and rejected your change. Yep, that bug again. Prodego talk 02:17, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Prodego, make a null edit please... Thetruthbelow, please hold on for a moment...Eagle talk 02:19, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
I already added him/her. Prodego talk 02:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
Well, sorry to disapoint, but it still isn't working. Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:22, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Ok try this edit

Try removing and reinstalling VP. File/Pathname error suggests that this may be the case...Eagle talk 02:23, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

did that twice so for, no difference. Sorry, Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:24, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

What did you download... the .exe or the .zip?Eagle talk 02:26, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I also tried that twice. First the .exe. then when I deleted everything the .zip Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:27, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

I appreciate all of this but... edit

I have to in about 5 min. If I can't fix it today, there is always tommorow. Thetruthbelow(talk) 02:26, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

Just a thought: I noted that you were having file access errors above, have you tried running VP using an Windows account with administrator permissions enabled? Someone reported a similar problem with user access permissions, so it may be worth a shot. I might have a better solution once I read through the full text of the discussion, though.
