discussion of drogba edit

I added the tags. The "early years" and "OdM" headings were wikified, but someone's removed them. SteveO, 23:23, 18 March, 2006 (UTC)

I think someone must edit all the sequences "five 'word'" to "five 'word' five 'word' five 'word' five 'word' five 'word'". Eg) "five goals" to "five goals five goals five goals five goals five goals". —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.92.3.107 (talk) 19:48, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

as much as i hate drogba and chelsea (gunners 4 life), i read in the sun that drogba is going to leave chelsea coz moronho left. just thought someone might want to add that one. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.176.186.40 (talk) 07:47, 21 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

"Didier adapted well to the FA Premier League" (first line of 'Chelsea'). I wouldn't agree with this. I think he's struggled since day one at his position (Striker). He's a very lucky player where the ball just bounces to him, but he has terrible control which you can't do in the premiership. Thnom 22:04, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

A bit harsh maybe, but it's all about opinions. I personally think he has done quite well and been far more than just very lucky. SteveO 23:34, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply
A very foolish view. José regards Drogba as one of his 3 "must-keep" players for a reason. Drogba was top of the assists league of 05/06. His control is a lot better than he gets credit for. Hardrada 20:37, 13 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
You are kidding right? His first touch is never good. Top of the assists - I would be impressed had be been a midfielder, but when he generally gets employed as a lone striker with 2 midfielders out wide you need a CLINICAL finisher- not a guy who gives assists to players. Thats what the wide-men are for. Darius Vassell was a high assist guy - you saying he's good enough too? It's a pretty blinkered view. Lampard had 10 assists himself whilst bagging goals.
Along with his 11 assists, Drogba has scored 14 goals this season. That's 25 goals he's made or scored in 40 games, which isn't bad. In fact I'd say it's pretty good. Especially for a player whose first touch is apparently never good. Even more especially when you look at some of the top quality goals he's scored this season. Lampard has 20 goals and 9 assists (we must have a different source) from 49 games which makes them very similar ratio-wise. It seems that Drogba's bashers and defenders are as blinkered as each other then. SteveO 01:27, 15 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Drogba is 188 cm tall, not 180 cm
I changed the height, after looking at this: http://www.thefa.com/Features/UEFACup/Postings/2004/05/UEFACup_Drogba_Factfile.htm and http://uk.sports.yahoo.com/fo/profiles/7574.html. Chelsea page http://www.chelseafc.com/Player.asp?plid=12303&nav=players&title=Didier+Drogba lists him at 6'2", which is 187cm.  :) Thnom 12:52, 21 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

"first player-owner in football history" edit

The article states that Drogba is the first ever player-owner, and has two citations that state this, but this overlooks Mohamed Kallon, who both owns and played for Kallon FC. 86.184.56.42 (talk) 17:11, 22 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Height edit

I find it hard to believe Didier Drogba is 1.88 m (6 ft 2 in) when standing near Michael Essien who is 1.80 m (5 ft 11 in) he looks near same height, even John Terry 1.86 m (6 ft 1 in) looks taller than Didier. Secondly who put these conversions on most not have a tape measure in the house. 1.80 m = 5' 11 not 1.81 m and 1.88 m = exactly 6 ft 2 in not 1.89 m - Culnacréann 17:14, 19 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

bare in mind 2 inches isnt a hell of a lot, iron mike bison is very big built so looks bigger... plus you should get a section on charity work cos he does loads ie unicef

Comment: You should not judge someone's height just by looking at him. You should have written proof about this 188/180 cm matter and write the source where you got it from.

Looking at someone is usually a good way to judge someones height, seeing an inflated figure in print is not, although I do understand that Wikipedia needs citations. From my own "original research" (as in he was in the hospitality after the match) there isn't a chance in hell that he is 6ft 2 (and a half). I'm 6ft 1 and I could see straight over the top of his head, unless he has appauling posture and slouches when stood up he is more like 5ft 11 - 6ft (absolute max). Apparently, in this section of the Didier Drogba article, so much information is missing. The only sections that are full are the Appearences and Goals. I believe that the rest should be removed for it is not helpful. It would be even better if someone made a research and filled it all up.

I agree that those sections should be removed for now, but maybe we ought to bring this up with some wikiproject to get help on. Miles Blues 21:15, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Who ever wrote that Drogba has won the European Golden Boot for the 2006/2007 year has to change it. It's Francesco Totti who won it, not Drogba. Copyedit edit

I've fixed much on the article including citations, rephrasing prose, changing present to past tense and removing libellous material. On a major note, following a mix of the two i've decided to write all dates in international format i.e. 2 June 2008 not June 2, 2008. When adding full dates to the article remember this. (see WP:Dates for more info)

Many parts of the article need citations, especially quotes from the player himself. Anyone who can find references would be most helpful.

Also - maybe this article needs a short paragraph on Drogba's personal life (wife, kids, outside of football stuff etc). Drogba's pretty media friendly so i'm sure interviews can be found on the net. I'd do it myself but as a Liverpool fan i feel i'm already too involved! Thanks. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 23:22, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and the lead is tiny please expand it per WP:LEAD. The trick is summarising, just put the most important and relevant things in there. Miss out minor details but don't put anything in there which is not covered elsewhere in the article. Thanks. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 23:28, 2 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rewrite edit

I've rewritten the article up to "Olympique". However other parts of the article still need citations to verify the information. One particular statement in the lead has been removed due to this:

Drogba holds the distinction of being the only player to score in three League Cup finals, in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

This should be reinserted if a reliable source can be found. Sillyfolkboy (talk) 21:28, 23 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Olivier Tébily edit

Disappointingly, the writer of this article from The Times, or his lazy researcher, appears to have sourced the background stuff for the piece from Wikipedia. At the time (e.g. the 26 Dec 2006 version), the Wiki article did contain the "fact" that Drogba and Olivier Tébily are cousins, for which the only evidence appears to be that they share a family name.

The player's official site makes no mention of Tébily, nor does it mention another move after returning to his parents at Antony, near Paris, as a 15-year-old. The Levallois club which Drogba joined was the local professional club, based only a few miles from Antony. The Times article says that Tébily was at Chateauroux when Drogba was supposed to be living with him. In 1993, Tébily wasn't a professional player, and he didn't join Chateauroux until five years later; he was a 17-year-old boy in the youth academy at Niort[1] (some 400km from Drogba's Paris suburban club, which would be a hellofa long way for him to go to training after school). cheers, Struway2 (talk) 08:53, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Cheers for that, that's why I put Niort because I thought they just got the club wrong! I'm going to remove all citations from that source and find alternate ones as it's obviously unreliable. Luckily you picked it up so quickly. I'm amazed at the dearth of quality Drogba news articles, for such a high profile player I expected to find much more. Hopefully, by the time I'm done, lazy researchers will be quids in! Sillyfolkboy (talk) 11:46, 24 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Source for Champions League disgrace tonight Barcelona edit

Here is source for Champions League disgrace tonight Barcelona. It tells of his words to television shouting that official is "fucking disgrace". I think Wikipedia is not a censor so proper words published no? Not little floating stars like in newspapers? These words heard all over Europe and the world I think. He will be in trouble for this action so it must be good to have it for his Wikipedia entry. Drogba in hot water from newspaper good source for this. Maybe others not have his exact word "fucking disgrace"? This does. Hope it helps. Not able to put it in myself because computer not allow me in.

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was furious after the Champions League semi-final defeat against Barcelona tonight and labelled referee Tom Henning Ovrebo a “disgrace”. An animated Drogba needed restraining by stewards and his manager Guus Hiddink at the end of the game. Drogba felt he should have had a penalty and his side also had two appeals turned down for handball, with the Spanish giants then grabbing a stoppage-time strike to go through on away goals. The Ivory Coast frontman, who was unhappy after being subbed in 72nd minute, approached the referee after the game. He then turned to the television camera, shouting that the official was a “f****** disgrace”. Chelsea fans also threw flags at the officials and the Barcelona bench. In the Champions League final last season against Manchester United, Drogba was sent off for raising his hands to Nemanja Vidic.

Charity edit

Drogba has this week donated over £3 million to a charity in the Ivory Coast. The biggest single charity donation a footballer has ever given, by a long long way.

He received the money from Pepsi, in payment for adverts he had done over the last 3 years. He then gave the fee straight to charity, to build a hospital in his home country.

For all the bad press Drogba gets, I think it would be nice if info on this could be put up. He's one of the biggest charity workers in the league. And £3 million is a huge, huge, one off sum.

I have no connection with Drogba by the way. I don't even support Chelsea. I just read it in a newspaper, and was very touched by the gersture, and rather amazed about the levels of charity work he secretly does.

You never hear him or his agent boasting about any of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.128.223.67 (talk) 21:44, 13 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

please add, Drogba's playing style as well as premier league goals & assists. edit

Someone should note down Drogba's playing style and premier league assists as well as league goals, for example:

Drogba is physically strong and as he's 6ft tall and has an athletic physique his sheer size makes him look like Goliath compared to opposition players. Also Drogba is fast and has pace & is excellent at defending set-plays with his strong header clearances and can score brilliant headers when he goes up for corners as well. And he is best at holding the ball by controlling a long ball pass with his chest and flicks the ball on for his team-mates, Drogba likes taking short distance direct, in-direct free-kicks as he's so good at them and Drogba has great accuracy & power in his long distance shooting. Drogba is a Striker and has scored 93 premier league goals and has 62 premier league assists to his name.

Drogba's goals and assists can been seen here on EPSN file: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/player/_/id/18727/didier-drogba?cc=5739 — Preceding unsigned comment added by LampsyTheCFCTalisman (talkcontribs) 22:21, 26 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Edit request on 28 January 2012 edit

Playing Style Drogba is powerful striker possessing immense strength and physical presence. He is a dynamic centre forward who also possesses excellent technical ability and a rocket like right foot having scored numerous long range goals throughout his career from general play or from free kicks. Due to these traits he is not only able to play as an intimidating target man bullocking his way through defences, and bringing others into the game through his impressive dribbling and passing (has amassed almost 70 assists for Chelsea) but also being deceptively quick is able to offer an outlet as a prototypical poaching striker. Much maligned for being a "big ego" and for being selfish at times as evidenced by his minor dispute with Frank Lampard for not being able to take a penalty which he believed would have helped him to win the golden boot on the last day of the 2009/2010 premier league season. However, he is recognised as a clutch performer having scored in a record 6 English cup finals and for regularly scoring against fellow heavy weights Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal where against the latter he has scored an incredible 13 goals in 13 games. Throughout his Chelsea career Drogba has had to compete for a spot in the team with the likes of legendary strikers Andriy Shevchenko and Hernan Crespo ( albeit not at their prime) as well as players such as Eidur Gudjohnsen, Nicholas Anelka and Fernando Torres, and while he has failed to striker up an effective partnership with the majority of them, he has always remained as the main striker attesting to his stature and importance to Chelsea.

I will be picking up the review of this one - both for the Wiki Cup and the GA cup as well. I will be making my review comments over the next couple of days.

Side note, I would love some input on a couple of Featured List candidates, Mexican National Light Heavyweight Championship and NWA World Historic Welterweight Championship. I am not asking for Quid pro Quo, but all help is appreciated.  MPJ-US  03:40, 11 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Well Written edit

Lead
  • The lead lists his full name but only gives the French pronunciation of Didier Drogba?
  • "Ligue 2 club Le Mans, and signed" does not need the comma
  • "year later he won another Premier League" I would change that to "they won", it's a team accomplishment
  • Statements should not be found only in the lead, the lead summarizes the article. The comment on the "Ultimate big game player" is not in the main article, I would think it would be a natural thing to include. I believe there are more statements in the lead not found later, please address.
  • "until his retirement" - earlier it stated he was still playing, please clarify.
Early life
  • "then settling in 1993 at Antony in the Paris suburbs" should be "then, in 1993, settling in Antony in the Paris suburbs.
  • Since source 19 is dead I cannot verify how much of the information between reference 18 and 19 it covers.
Le Mans
  • "switched cities" seems very informal, where did he move to?
  • "then upon his return he" needs a comma after "return"
Guingamp
  • "the end of the season he" needs a comma after "season"
Marseille
  • "Marseille manager Alain Perrin was soon replaced by José Anigo after signing Drogba from Guingamp." - not really relevant for this article is it? it's already so huge, any unnecessary detail that can be removed should - this could be removed and we would still get the same understanding of Drogba's career.
  • "At the end of the season" needs a comma after "season"
Chelsea
  • "Chelsea won the Premier League, only their second English top-flight championship and their first in 50 years,[28] and the League Cup, with Drogba scoring in extra time in a 3–2 final win against Liverpool at the Millennium Stadium, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League. " that is a lot of information crammed into one long, run-on sentence. Can you revise it into two sentences?
  • "scoring winners" too informal a phrase
  • the "highlights" section only has a source for one hattrick, they need sources as they claim these are "highlights " and need attribution to not be the author's judgement calls.
  • No source for "Drogba was the first player to end up on the winning team after scoring in both finals.", needs a source
  • "Drogba was crowned the Ivorian Player of the Year" replace "Crowned" with the neutral term "named"
  • There are no real details on the transfer issues, lack of co-operation hardly sounds like something to investigate on the face of it.
  • "He soon regained the trust of the board and fans" - seems like an interpretation or artistic license, is there a source specifically stating this?
  • The use of the term "superb" needs to be attributed to someone, otherwise it reads like a fan judgment.
  • "the last 30 minutes in which he was on the pitch" simplify as "the last 30 minutes he was on the pitch"
  • "the first to score in three consecutive English domestic cup finals" claim is not supported by a source
  • "diving" in this case seems to be a specific thing in Football, but there is no link - what exactly is "diving" in this context?
  • "hit back at Benítez in an interview" i am looking for more details, how did he hit back?
  • "the two goals he scored putting his tally at 17" - "the two goals he scored put his total at 17"
  • "beating Peter Osgood's record of 16" - "surpassing Peter Osgood's record of 16"
  • "three match" should be "three-match".
  • "Chelsea remained keen to keep the Ivorian" does not seem to be actually stated in the source
  • "his rich goal-scoring", take out the word "rich"
  • "Champions League heroics" is not neutral, find a different word than "heroics" please
  • "scored a late winner" too informal
  • "superb pass" not neutral
  • "before slotting into an empty net" too informal
  • "and sign a new contract" should be "and signed a new contract"
  • "was fouled in the area" I read that as if he was kicked in the groin or something?
  • "an impressive eight goals" not neutral, judgment call what is impressive
  • "in a 4–0 thrashing" informal tone
  • "score a fine team goal" not neutral
  • "with a ban" - ban for what?
  • "The latter being a fine solo effort in which he beat a number of the opposition players and had his first effort saved by the goalkeeper but then slotted in the rebound." - this is an encylopedic article, not a puff piece on Drogba, this seems excessively detailed and overly prasing.
  • "scored a brace" what?
  • "continued to impress" not neutral.
  • "Drogba inspired Chelsea", tone, neutrality issues
  • "medal, but" does not need a comma
  • "respective fixtures" what is a fixture in this context?
  • "The following week, Drogba scored the only goal of the 2010 FA Cup Final against Portsmouth from a free-kick, keeping up his record of having scored in all six English cup finals (FA Cup and League Cup) in which he has played. is totally unsourced
  • "when he smashed home a penalty", tone issues
  • "Drogba rejected a new deal with Chelsea and is set to sign for the highest bidder" changes tense half way through and seems to be written as it happend, never updated afterwards.
  • I don't think the article needs to mention each time he moved up the rank of Chelsea goal-scorers, just list the last one, his highest rank.
  • "hammering the ball past former teammate" - tone issues
  • "ran out" too informal
  • I think "penalty-shootout" does not need the dash
Galatasaray
  • "€4 million per season (thus €2 million in 2012–13 Süper Lig)" should be "€4 million per season, €2 million for the remaining 2012–13 Süper Lig season"
  • No follow up on the contract dispute?
  • "Gala's" too informal
  • "second half" should be "second-half"
Return to Chelsea
  • "penalty-kick" should be "penalty kick
International career
  • Drogba helped the Ivory Coast qualify for its first ever FIFA World Cup, held in Germany in 2006. His first cap came on 8 September 2002 against South Africa and he scored his first goal with Les Éléphants on 11 February 2003 against Cameroon in a 3–0 victory.[141]
  • The above paragraph seems chronologically out of order.
  • " in a penalty shoot-out." redundant, already mentioned it went to penalty kicks
  • Reference 143 does not use the colorful "group of death" moniker.
  • "5–0 thrashing of Guinea" , tone and neutrality
  • "misfortune" makes it seem like they were just unlucky, not neutral
  • Reference 157 does not support the claim that Drogba's goal was the first player from an African nation to score on Brazil.
  • "ended by their loss" should be "ended with their loss"
Style of play
  • I would have expected something, somewhere about his controversies, yes they're mentioned in passing but with the talk page referring to him as having "petulant behavior on the field" etc.? It is currently rather downplayed in the article.
  • "Dr Ken Bray of University of Bath" should be "Dr. Ken Bray of the University of Bath"

Sources/verifiable edit

  • There are eight sources in the lead, I am pretty sure most of those statements are actually in the main article too. They should only be sourced in the main article, leads normally do not have sources in them.
  • Sources that are not in English need to indicate the language
  • All online sources should have "Accessdate" listed.
  • Reference 130 is just a bare link, please format appropriately
  • 136 as well
  • TEAM OF THE YEAR" should not be in all caps even if the source has it as such.

Broad in coverage edit

  • Yes, it's not just football related  Y

Neutral edit

  • Is covered under "well written"

Stable edit

  • Fortunately vandalism is not a demerit when it comes to stable although this seems to be semi-protected for years (six years?).
    • Sorry to jump in, couldn't tell whether the question mark was for you estimating six years or being surprised at such a long semi-protection. Certainly six years ago DD was one of the most famous and visible footballers, so there would be high traffic and vandalism. He had detractors for his sometimes petulant behaviour on the field. He is not as much a daily news item any more, but I still think for now he could be classed as one of the personalities where indefinite protection is valid. • @MPJ-DK: External links are fixed now. The only thing that ISN'T fixed is that the "lead lists his full name but only gives the French pronunciation of Didier Drogba."
