Quite a few " men's" pages in WMNSPORT

I have noticed quite a few pages with " men's" in the title have been added to WP:WMNSPORT by the bot User:LauraHale requested. I have suggested a review on the bot's page and mentioned it on her talk page.

I understand some of these may be correctly targeted because they discuss women's sport as well as men's, but I think most of them are due to the categories listed for the bot to process weren't completely female entries. Mark Hurd (talk) 10:43, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

Statement of gender

I've just made an edit on Ice Hockey World Championships denoting that it is a men's tournament – a simple and obvious distinction which had not been made explicit before. Having a cursory glance, our articles on Major League Baseball and the National Football League do not make this distinction either. Even Premier League (a featured article) fails to tell the reader the exclusive gender of its participants.

Such presentations (presumably unintentional ones made by male editors) serve only to (a) underline the bias of sporting culture in favour of men and (b) perpetuate the underlying idea that there is "sport" and "women's sport". While improving Wikipedia's coverage of women's sport is the foremost purpose of this project, we should also try to counteract these notions in articles on men's sport. In Synchronized swimming—a principally female sport—half the lead is dedicated to covering the position of men in the sport. Yet, it goes unspoken that women are excluded in the three above articles (and i assume many more) – a fact which by its very omission says that this exclusion is not important. If the exclusion were done by any other means rather than gender (race, culture etc), we would doubtless give this aspect much attention. SFB 20:53, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

The articles don't make the distinction in your examples because they allow women to play. Just no women have managed to attain the level required to play at that high a level. You need to be careful when making such changes as saying its a men's league when there are no rules barring women is inaccurate. -DJSasso (talk) 21:08, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

This is a frequent kind of error actually. What often happens is that amateur and pro leagues and their scholastic counterparts are generally set up to discourage or ignore attempts at female participation, resulting in no girls/women with the skills to compete at higher levels. As this has been written about many times in reliable sources, some kind of overall article on discrimination and women's sport[s] would be useful, and could be linked to from articles like the one Sillyfolkboy mentions. There's a lot of info available from old newspapers that clearly shows this sort of bias going back to the 1800s, and I've seen various modern pieces on the topic as well; i.e., it's not only a current concern but has a rich history. I think this would be about 1000% more encyclop[a]edically productive than either trying to add usually untrue allegations that particular professional leagues are sexist (rather than everything leading up to them) or creating article after article after article that consists of little but examples of such segregation on a local, per-sport basis, as has been done in Category:Women's sport in Australia. Most of those articles needs to merge, though I'm declining to participate in them any further due to conflicts with their principal author becoming too irritating. The content of this sort gathered so far would be best used in a wider and less parochial piece about the undeniable stunting of women's participation in sports. And a Women's sport in Australia article could, per WP:SUMMARY style, be more encyclopedic than a bunch of hopeless micro-stubs like Women's archery in Australia, Women's boxing in Australia, etc. Some of the sport-specific articles do report on notable, organized sporting as in Women's golf in Australia. But not every single recognizable sport needs a separate "Women's [sport name] in [place]" content fork, only those where cultural context generates a distinctive phenomenon of note. This is why we don't have separate "[race] [activity name] in [place]", "[sexual preference] [activity name] in [place]" or any other articles on random triple-intersections of demographic, verb and location. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(^Õل^ō)ˀ Contribs. 17:55, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

@DJSasso: That's not necessarily true. There are several instances where women have qualified to participate in professional leagues or tournaments and have been told they cannot participate solely because of their gender and instead have to compete in the women's league or women's tournament. The U.S. Open, for example, is known for explicitly excluding women from the main tournament (although I'm not sure if this is still the case). I believe this sort of gender discrimination is legal so long as an "equivalent" women's version exists. This is also why, for example, men are generally excluded from participating in women's leagues although they could potentially qualify. The trick, however, is that the women's leagues/tournaments are rarely "equivalent" in terms of money, prestige, media coverage, etc. Kaldari (talk) 18:15, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

The qualification criteria are a bit of a smokescreen to be honest. Even if women are technically allowed to participate, the fact that these competitions go on with just one gender in reality is enough to make a statement saying as such in the article. Leaving discrimination issues aside, it's an encyclopaedic failing not to mention gender at all when gender is a defining aspect of a competition. SFB 18:57, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

I have this project called The Concussion Project, and one of the pages I created was Concussions in women's sport, though I later decided to merge, but then I moved it to User:ZappaOMati/sandbox/3. Feedback requested on the best way to expand coverage of the history of women's basketball

I would like to expand the coverage of women's basketball history.

There seem to be three logical places for coverage of the history

1. Women's basketball
2. Basketball
3. History of basketball

Task Force on women's basketball

I'm gathering feedback for the possibility of starting a Task Force on women's basketball, with the intent that it would be a task force of WikiProject Women's sport as well as WikiProject Basketball (and maybe college basketball). I've read Wikipedia:WikiProject_Council/Guide/Task_forces#Setting_up_a_task_force_structure, but I did not see whether one is supposed to get permission from the Wikiproject to form a task force, or if one should be bold and just do it. I posting this as a third way - if someone identifies that I am required to get permission, I'll start that process, if I do not hear back soon, I'll be bold.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:19, 26 July 2013 (UTC)

At WP:FOOTBALL they usually ask that at least five editors are involved to start a taskforce. I'm not sure if this is a requirement or a sort of rule of thumb. I suppose if you started things off with fewer than about five editors you might get some resistance. Although, in my experience the response from the 'parent project' (WP:FOOTBALL) to the women's football taskforce has been to completely ignore it! Only breaking out into open hostility now and again. I wish you well with your endeavour - being a task force of two separate wikiprojects is a very interesting idea. Is this possible? 3rd party eyes needed

We have a WP:FULLNAME related problem regarding the article first mention name of a Serbian tennis player. This is the last twist in a long pattern of "controversy" between advocates of national spellings and "Tennis names" which started with an attempt to remove ć from the players name in 2009 at Talk:Ana Ivanovic/Archive 4. That was rejected 13 vs 5, but inexplicably a RM in 2012 years later went 0-4 in the other direction, and there's been 2 unsuccessful attempts to undo that since. Anyway, that's background, this isn't about the title it's about the first sentence, the lead WP:FULLNAME part of the a MOSBIO guidelines.

All other Serbian tennis players Tamara Čurović, Jelena Genčić, Jovana Jakšić, Jelena Janković, Tatjana Ječmenica, Ana Jovanović, Karolina Jovanović, Natalija Kostić, Aleksandra Krunić, Vojislava Lukić, Teodora Mirčić, Sandra Načuk, Milana Špremo, Ana Timotić, Ana Veselinović, Dragana Zarić, Nataša Zorić have WP:FULLNAME in line with WP:OPENPARA, similar to the draft guideline at WP:SERBIANNAMES.

Ana Jovanović (Cyrillic: Ана Јовановић; born 28 December 1984) is a Serbian professional tennis player.

That excludes obviously former-Serbians, Australian Serbians, who follow a similar pattern to American citizens:

Martina Navratilova (Czech: Martina Navrátilová; born Martina Šubertová; October 18, 1956) is a retired Czech American tennis player and coach.

The extra spelling in Cyrillic is unique to Serbian and some Bosnian articles. In Serbia Latinica (Latin script) is only used by the popular media, tabloids, sports press etc., while government newspapers, the church continue to use Cyrillic, so every Serbian has to read and write both. The Serbian is absent from Croatian WP:FULLNAME.

Ivana Abramović (born September 3, 1983 in Zagreb) is a Croatian professional tennis player.

So the problem, the problem is the lead of Ana Ivanovic which was given duplicate names in this edit immediately following the move creating the lead

Ana Ivanovic (Serbian: Ana Ivanović Serbian Cyrillic: Ана Ивановић, born November 6, 1987) is a Serbian tennis player...

This is contrary to WP:FULLNAME. The RM didn't make any case for changing the lead, nor through going through the article and stripping out 157 more -ć, leaving the only -ć in brackets in the lead sentence. Also in my experience (if anyone knows different please give an example) we only ever do Martina Navratilova (Czech: Martina Navrátilová) type leads if someone has very clearly changed citizenship, not even green-card Dominican baseball players in the US have their Spanish accents removed in WP:FULLNAME.

At this point this is highly sensitized, by mentioning it here I'm leaving poop on WikiProject Women's sport's doorstep. But then there is a WikiProject Women's sport tag on the Talk page and this article "belongs" to WikiProject Women's sport as much as WikiProject Serbia and WikiProject Tennis. So there it is. I'm noticing that several pages about women's cricket (such as England women's cricket team) have got stuck in 2009. I hope that the publicity surrounding the current Ashes series will encourage more editing in this field, but I mention it here in case anyone on this project feels capable of bringing these articles up to scratch. My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

Fort Worth Panthers

This is a women's soccer team in the Women's Premier Soccer League. That article has a red link: Fort Worth Panthers (WPSL). Fort Worth Panthers redirects to Fort Worth Cats (Texas League), which is about a defunct minor league baseball team, the Fort Worth Cats, which once used that name. Fort Worth FC might be a club of some sort, but it's certainly not the team's name, although the article claims that. Can you fix that? 71.23.178.214 (talk) 16:11, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

Heather Clark pro Ice Hockey player?

Does anyone have any information about Heather Clark (fighter) or Heather Jo Clark apparently before she became an MMA fighter she played pro Ice hockey[1]. If so does anyone know the name of the team she played for and for how long so I can create an article. Apparently she may have played for EHC Visp and Vancouver Griffins can anyone confirm this? Notice and invitation

1. There is a redirect discussion that may be of interest to this group.
2. Have you heard of the Kaffeeklatsch? It is a test area for women to hear and support each other. The idea came about as a result of a discussion at meta regarding my IdeaLab proposal (yet open) for WikiProject Women.

Now that the klatsch has survived an MfD and WMF legal has said that it does not violate the non discrimination policy,[2] I am looking for women editors who might like to join.

Although I have started a couple of discussions, they are not urgent. For now, the "Please introduce yourself" discussion is more important! I want to take it slow at first and build a small group before trying to address heavy topics or come up with big goals. For now, the klatsch is there as a sort of refuge. I hope you will consider joining, and invite other women editors, too, if you wish.

Women and The Boat Race

I see that this year there is going to be a women's race as part of "The Boat Races", in 29 days time, but our The Boat Race article only mentions this way down the article under The_Boat_Race#Other_boat_races_involving_Oxford_and_Cambridge. The logo on the official web page now includes an "S" on "RACES", not the version used in the article. I'm no expert on rowing (I just watch the race each year, along with the London Marathon, the Grand National and a bit of The Championships as the totality of my sports tv-watching outside the Olympics). Someone interested in women's sport might like to update the article to reflect this year's changes, the addition of the women's race. PamD 09:25, 13 March 2015 (UTC)

Hi Pam, just to reply to your post here, The Rambling Man created the combined The Boat Race 2015, as mentioned above, and several articles on the the individual women's races since 1927 (listed on Template:The Boat Race), Gareth E Kegg created the 1927 article. Andrew Davidson started Women's Boat Race and Women's rowing which I expanded as well as revising Rowing (sport)#Women. So some progress made and hopefully heading in the right direction. Hello PamD, I've also taken Women's Boat Race 2013 to GA and am hoping to do the same with Women's Boat Race 2014 in due course. Other Women's Boat Races have scant coverage, if you could help with that, brilliant. As for the main article, which is mainly poor, because the men's section covers 175+ years of history, it's little wonder that the women's race gets less coverage. Indeed, until this year, it was literally a minor blip that was viewed by a few, celebrated by a few, and remembered by a few. If you can help, please do. Hi Pam, just to add - thank you for flagging this. I enjoyed working on it and collaborating with other editors. It wasn't obvious, to me at least, what the right way to solve this was initially, and, as we saw, there was a discussion about moving Talk:The Boat Race#Requested move 13 March 2015, which didn't happen, but following the discussions at the UK Wikipedians' notice board, WikiProject Rowing and User Talk, the pattern of changes described above emerged as a result of this being brought to the attention of editors who had (hopefully) the right ideas about changes to make. I would add that most of the content around the boat races has been generated by The Rambling Man including the initiative to boldly combine the races in the Talk:The Boat Races 2015#Name and create the initial redirect for the Women's Boat Race, so much credit belongs there. But, my reason for mentioning this is I think this is a great example of how the collaborative processes on Wikipedia can work to produce improvements. Whizz40 (talk) 05:37, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

Perhaps not, but, if one of these templates were to be placed on the talk page for every WikiProject Women's sport-covered article that was nominated for deletion, the talk page would be filled with them. I get that you're passionate about saving this particular article, but I think it's both inappropriate and annoying to template a WikiProject's talk page like this. If you think the article is more important of attention than all the other women's sport-related articles at AfD, perhaps a short comment explaining its relevance would be better than this boilerplate message. Also, the documentation cautions: "Aggressive use of this template may be seen as canvassing, which is disruptive and may lead to the canvasser(s) being blocked."  Rebbing  04:16, 7 April 2016 (UTC)

Helping review + re-publish women's international-level athlete articles

There are currently numerous articles about international-level women athletes that need review and re-publishing once references are confirmed. The deadline for this is April 24, 2017. Background information is available here: User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines.

For those willing to help (any amount helps), the process goes fairly quickly once you get in a rhythm of reviewing and re-publishing. Please see User:Aymatth2/SvG clean-up/Guidelines#Lists for the lists. The main steps are to:

1. Open a draft article from the list
2. Check refs to confirm information in the article and make any copyedits to the article to clean up
3. Once confirmed, move the draft to the article mainspace and activate the categories by removing the :
4. Confirm the article's talk page is tagged with {{WP Women's sport}}

Please feel free to help build it out by adding task lists, resources, etc. and invite other editors who work on women's boxing articles. I'd also consider tossing on roller derby, and the Paralympics as sub-projects. I'd also love to see Deaflympics as a specific task force but that area is... well, difficult. Though it would be hugely nice. It would also be nice to have regional subprojects, for Oceania, Asia, Africa, South America, the Caribbean, Europe. These are vastly under-represented geographic areas in many ways. Having lists we can get from projects of women's articles about these regions makes it easier for people to organize efforts to improve regional content, under-represented sports, etc. (Handball and field hockey and netball and roller derby are popular in some of these countries, but lack of anglophone popularity at times pushes down coverage of major non-Anglo women's sports figures outside the English speaking world.) I haven't been following things, but the I could see the tennis thing. There are issues around notability, where men and women don't have parity but the parity issues are often geographic and, well, language issues. :/ --LauraHale (talk) 12:06, 28 April 2017 (UTC)

Netball task force

@Hmlarson: Since Netball is primarily a women's sport, I'm wondering if we really need a Women's netball taskforce. It seems that the scope of this taskforce would overlap pretty heavily with WikiProject Netball. Having a task force and a WikiProject covering the same scope causes confusion (for example, it isn't clear where to have discussions) and splits resources and attention. Women in Sport's history

@Trilotat: As you probably noticed, there are seventeen task forces, each dedicated to one sport or group of sports. Use of these is not obligatory; and since there are several hundred (perhaps several thousand) sports played by women, it is impractical to set up a task force for every single one. If none of the task forces are appropriate, simply omit them all. This means that the parameters that you might consider using are:

Jessica Mendoza

Jessica Mendoza gets a decent amount of vandalism during the baseball season (she's on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball crew). I just reverted a series of edits from this afternoon (by a user who has only edited this one article): adding in an unsourced weight (then increasing it), plus adding some questionable sources (a baseball messageboard for one). Unlike a lot of this vandalism, some of this stuff is true but they cherrypicked quotes and sources which are quite negative, and it didn't provide anything close to an overall reasonable take. I'm out the door now, unfortunately, but I think this may be an ongoing thing and her page might deserve protection? trans sport

I was looking on the project's main page for information related to my previous thread, and noticed the following goal in particular:

• "Improve Wikipedia's coverage of transsexual and transgendered sport."

First of all and most importantly, "transgendered" is dated terminology and the "-ed" should be removed (see Transgender#Evolution of transgender terminology and its sources, for example).

It doesn't seem like the project is currently covering this, since we're missing Transgender people in sports, and most of the trans people listed in Category:Transgender and transsexual sportspeople don't show up here either (the ones who do are mostly trans women who have competed in women's sports, I think). While I think that trans sport coverage on wikipedia can and should be improved, and this project certainly covers some trans sports topics, I don't personally think that trans sports should be thought of as a sub-project of women's sports, which is a bit how the goal reads to me? Any thoughts from other editors?

Proposal to re-name this WikiProject to WP Women in Sports

What do other editors think of re-naming this project to WikiProject Women in Sports? I believe the title better encapsulates women athletes and other women who work in sports such as broadcasters, officials, etc. Pinging LauraHale - who I believe created this project originally. • Comment: I feel like this can be fixed with a statement on the project page, rather than a renaming? It seems like the existing name covers

- everyone (and everything) involved with women's sports, including men (see Geno Auriemma, Tony DiCicco, Mark Sampson, etc.)

- including all women athletes, regardless of sport (see Katie Hnida and Janet Guthrie, who participated in "men's" sporting events)

- but does miss some significant women in sports, e.g. Erin Andrews, Christine Brennan, Jemele Hill, Katie Nolan, and Kathryn Smith. These 4 journalists and an NFL coach do not have the wikiproject included on their talk pages. These individual cases seem like they would be relatively rare, as many (most?) women with notable roles in the broader sports world have also been involved in women's sports at a high level (Doris Burke, Moya Dodd, Becky Hammon, Bibiana Steinhaus, Jennifer Welter, etc), which puts them under the project as it stands.

Personally, I am in favor of the project covering both Andrews and Auriemma, but think that that can be done as the title stands, perhaps with some detail given on the project page. If people think that a rename is necessary, though, I wouldn't be incredibly opposed.

I've updated some of the text on the main page. You've provided some good examples of "Women in sports" who are not technically "Women's sport". I think a re-name to Women in Sports would also be more in line with other projects such as WikiProject Women in Technology and Women in warfare and the military. Proposal to add NWHL to Hockey notability guideline

There is currently a proposal put forth by another editor to add the top American women's league, the NWHL, to the Hockey notability guideline: WP:NHOCKEY. As it stands now, the WP:NHOCKEY excludes most women players in top leagues, including the NWHL. Articles about women players for the most part rely on WP:GNG though "fails WP:NHOCKEY" is often noted in AFDs (articles nominated for deletion discussions). The discussion is here. Input is welcome. Somebody help to clear doubts regarding a Samoan weightlifter

I have a big doubt regarding the fact that are there 2 different Samoan female weightlifters who were born on the same date (25 June 1993) Iuniarra Sipaia and Iuniarra Simanu? I created the article Iuniarra Sipaia because as she was linked with 2016 Oceania Weightlifting Championships, 2014 Commonwealth Games, 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and 2013 Pacific Mini Games. But when I looked at the list of Samoan female weightlifters I identified Iuniarra Simanu who was born on the same date as of Iuniarra Sipaia on 25th of June, 1993. Lacrosse article review

I'm looking for an women's lacrosse enthusiast to review the lacrosse article. The women's game has gotten less than ideal coverage in common sections in the past, so there is much to improve. It is a large topic and a long article, so not a lot of content needs to be added, but the common sections should avoid bias towards the men's game and the women's lacrosse section needs revising. If anyone has time right now (I don't unfortunately), there are more secondary references available for this article via a quick and easy Google News search, in addition to the secondary sources already included in the article. The AFD could use more eyes and input. WP:FOOTY includes only 1 top-division women's league in the world last I checked. WP:GNG is a more appropriate guideline for women's footballers. WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Listing women's height and weight

Does anyone know why or when it was deemed necessary to add sportswomen's height and weight to articles, namely any listed in Category:Lists of All-American Girls Professional Baseball League players? I don't think it matters at all; it's not in any men's articles. It certainly doesn't in women's basketball, except in infoboxes. Just curious as to why. — Wyliepedia @ 02:10, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

Notability of female sports figures

In reviewing the restrictions of Wikipedia:Notability (sports) it seems as though it would be difficult to keep articles on professional female sports figures from being deleted. I translated and expanded Carly Hill for the WIR World Contest and it checked their reviews for citations. But I haven't the time or energy to defend it from deletionists; it feels a bit like a lost cause. – Reidgreg (talk) 14:59, 17 May 2018 (UTC)

I regret that the article was deleted. I think that it could have been saved had I used a different argument and put more time into that discussion. I think it's just a matter of showing that the article meets WP:N which I ultimately failed to do because I focused too much on the nominator rather than their argument. I don't think defending from deletionists is a "lost cause" at all though, it's unfortunate that we have to do it so often but it's definitely a winnable battle if the sources are there as in this case. --Habst (talk) 03:49, 4 June 2018 (UTC)

I copied the article text before it was deleted and saved it as Draft:Carly Hill. I'm not sure what to do about the notability unless someone wants to try taking the WP:systemic bias issue up and try to change the notability:sports guidelines to be more lenient toward women's sport. CD Tacón / Las Blancas

The article CD Tacón, about a Spanish women's football team that seems to be in the process of becoming the women's team for Real Madrid needs updating. Particularly with mention of "Las Blancas", which may be the official name or a nickname for the (new?) team. Most of the sources seem to be in Spanish.

Portal links in categories

In an effort to improve cross-namespace navigation, and to increase traffic to the portal, I am planning to make a bot request to add a link to Portal:Women's sport ({{Portal|Women's sport}}) to ~1,000 categories:

• All non-redirect categories that start with Category:Women's sport, not including 5 categories that start with Category:Women's sport articles—i.e. about ~630 pages in total.
• All subcategories of Category:Women's sports by year (140 pages), Category:Women's sport by country and year (139 pages), and Category:Women's sport by country by year (67 pages).

If the category already contains a link to Portal:Sports, it should be replaced with the more precise link to Portal:Women's sport. While there are many other categories where a portal link would be appropriate, they should be considered on more of a case-by-case basis (e.g. for association football categories, it is better to link to Portal:Women's association football).

Planned Edits to Women's Sports Article

Hello! I plan on editing the "Women's Sports" article as part of a class project. I will be restructuring the article, such as combining smaller sections together into larger ones; editing sections so they include the experiences of athletes in a greater number of non-Western countries; and adding new sections, like "Professional Sports," to further enrich the article. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Assessment of importance

I started a topic on the WikiProject Women's sport/Assessment talk page, but I realized that probably no-one is checking that page out, so I repost here. I don't know if the discussion should be here or kept on the Assessment talk page.

There is no way to asses an article's importance within this WikiProject's scope as there is no criteria list, at least not what I can find. For the quality scale assessment criteria, one is refereed to the general Wikipedia guideline on content assessment, which can be applied to all articles regardless of matter.

On that page further below it says, to my understanding, that the importance scale is instead determined by every individual WikiProject. Wikipedia:Content_assessment#Importance_assessment That is reinforced here Wikipedia:Importance

On WikiProject Women's sport/Assessment it says

"The importance parameter should be assigned according to the importance scale below."

I see. That makes sense. It's actually mentioned on the top of the Women's sport/Assessment page, but quite vaguely so. Good suggestion, I definitely think so. It looks really good. And thank you! I will hopefully add some more about Sjögran.

I recently updated and expanded Melbourne University W.F.C.. I believe the article meets the notability guidelines required to justify a separate article. However @4TheWynne: has constantly reverted my edits and has engaged in an edit war. He insists on merging the article into Melbourne University Football Club. Awards in infoboxes

I signed up as a participant back in 2012. At the time, I said my main interest was women's basketball, and that's where I've added most of my sport's related edits. However, I recently decided to work on some sports awards, particularly the Honda Sports Awards, which cover 12 sports, so I am getting involved in bios related to other sports. As an aside, before I get to my main question, there is some confusion about the names of the awards, partly because there are fundamentally two main awards - one for an individual sport (Honda Sports Award), and one for all sports combined (Honda Cup). An additional issue is that the organization has changed over time, along with the name of the award, so it has been called the Broderick Award, the Honda-Broderick Award, the Honda Sports Award, the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards and more. I am in consultation with the organization, and working on sorting out the naming issue. At the moment, for recent awards, my preferred term is Honda Sports Award for individual sports and Honda Cup for the combined sports.

I note that there are four different places in an article where such an award might appear:

• A discussion of the winning of the award in the main body of the article
• a short entry in an infobox
• a short entry in a summary of awards and honors typically lower down in the main text
• a navigation box at the bottom of the page

Articles about women's basketball typically use one of two infoboxes:

• Infobox basketball biography
• Infobox college coach

Both have a parameter for awards

Bios of athletes in other sports use a variety of infoboxes, including:

• Infobox baseball biography
• Infobox sportsperson
• Infobox football biography

The first of these three has a parameter for awards, but the other two do not. I haven't yet contacted the principle editor of those templates, because I wanted to ask here first.

Does the editing community disagree that awards are appropriate in an infobox, or is it just happenstance that some specific templates do not have the parameter? In other words, if I ask an editor to consider adding the parameter, will I be trampling on some community decision?--S Philbrick(Talk) 12:14, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Sphilbrick - Awards are appropriate for an infobox - they are in football / soccer infoboxes using medaltemplates=, but it may be different across various sports wikiprojects.

Sphilbrick I see what you mean. I think those lists could get really long in infoboxes for some athletes (I'm thinking of someone like Megan Rapinoe) and would be better suited within the:

1. Lead,
2. Content of the article / Honors and awards section
3. a template/navbox at the bottom of the article like this one: Template: Hermann

But, can you provide a few example articles that use the infobox fo baseball biographies with awards listed so we can take a look on how they're displayed and if there are certain standards for what awards are included? Hmlarson (talk) 20:32, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

Because I'm more familiar with basketball, let me point you to Maya Moore, who is one of the more decorated players.

I note that infobox is quite long, but I doubt there are many others that long.

Two important observations:

1. While the Awards and honors section of the main article will have a lot of entries, such as the WNBA All-star for each year, those six entries are collapsed into a single row in the infobox, with parenthetical references to the years.
2. There is an unwritten rule that the infobox is for major awards. So, for example, a player of the week award might make the long list, but should not be in the infobox. "Best Female Amateur Athlete by Connecticut Magazine" makes the awards section, but not the infobox.

Hmlarson, First, let me mention that I'm enjoying this conversation. I was a little concerned that there wasn't much activity on this talk page and I wasn't sure how long it would take for some feedback.

I tend to be desktop oriented. I do know that the majority of page views are on mobile, so I do want to be cognizant of mobile issues.

When I look at Maya Moore in Mobile , I see a section with a title "quick facts" that is collapsed. It contains the info box. I don't have to scroll to see the main text, in fact I have to click on that box to see the info Box contents.

That said, I'm using something called Wikipedia beta, so maybe the handling in this app is different than in yours. Are you accessing it through a Wikipedia app or something else?

My recollection is that some of the articles about chemical compounds had very large info boxes. I just glanced at one and it wasn't as long as I had expected, but can you try Hafnium?

Thanks for collaborating, sphilbrick. I use web browsers (Chrome, Safari, Firefox) on mobile. I don't think the majority of the general Wikipedia audience has an app to access the site - they get to individual articles through search engine results in web browsers. Are you able to test on a mobile phone using a browser? I see the entire infobox, the lead, and then the content sections are collapsed under their respective headers. Hmlarson, It took some doing but I confirmed the results you described. When I try accessing Wikipedia on my mobile using a browser, I still see the info box as collapsed. My guess is that my browser “helpfully” knows to open the Wikipedia app when accessing Wikipedia material. I asked my son-in-law to view an article, as he does not have the Wikipedia app installed, and he confirmed that the infobox is open and you have to scroll past it.

I know that MOS takes a dim view of collapsed sections, but I just re-read the guidance, and I think a collapsed section in an info box is acceptable given that it repeats information in the main text. it technically would be a problem if someone included an award only in the info box but that's not a good editorial decision so if it happens the cure is to add it to the text, not remove the collapse feature from the info box.

I notice that {{Infobox_swimmer}} does have a collapse option for that infobox. I know a little about template construction, but skills do not extend to creation of a collapse option for an awards section of a template. Let’s continue to discuss options, and we will need community input before tracking down a template editor who could make the change.

What I might really like is the ability to make it collapsed if it exceeds a certain size. I don’t see a need to collapse it for 99% of athletes who might have an award or two, just to make sure that the Maya Moores and Megan Rapinoes of the world aren’t too long. @Sphilbrick:Are you referring to the Medal Records / Medal template = section of {{Infobox_swimmer}}? Down below in the Parameter Instructions it mentions: "If "show-medals=yes", the medal table is displayed. Otherwise, it is hidden and will only be shown if the "show" link is used. It is recommended for swimmers with large numbers of medals that this parameter should be toggled "no" because of the disproportionate amount of article space the extended infobox will require." Hmlarson, Exactly. I assume if the athlete has only a handful of medals e.g. Janine_Belton, they are just shown, but if there are enough, then it is closed by default.

In full disclosure, I just edited Janine_Belton to test it, as it was set to the default despite only one medal, but it seems to work. I think the community could pick a number, say 10 and suggest that if the number of awards exceeds that number, the close by default option should be used, and if 10 or fewer, it could be set to be open. Hmlarson, I had another thought.

I don't want to fixate on 10 as the right number but I'll use it as illustration and we can separately debate the right number. Seems curious to me that we might decide if an athlete has up to 10 medals (or awards) we would show them all, but if they have 11 we won't show any. An obvious alternative is to design the code so that it shows the first 10 (or whatever number we select) and hides the rest with a “show” button. The advantage of this approach is that we wouldn't have to make a decision which option to choose for each athlete which conceivably could change over time, we could “set it and forget it” for all info boxes. The challenge is I don't know how to write that code but I suspect a good template editor could figure it out. What do you think? S Philbrick(Talk) 12:23, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Portland Rising

Would someone from this WikiProject mind taking a look at this at assessing? It was created a few days ago and didn't go through AfC. I don't know whether there's a specific WP:SNG for ultimate teams, or whether they are just assessed per WP:NTEAM. One thing that does seem a bit odd (unusual?) is the listing of pronouns for individual coaches or players. I don't really think I've seen that thing before in other articles about sports teams, but maybe it's something particular to women's ultimate teams or particular to the times. I'm also not sure if there's a need to use womxn instead of women which seems more common for articles about women's teams, woman athletes and women in general. Another thing is the "mission statement" in the lead which seems to be something that might be not suitable per WP:PROMOTION. Anyway, perhaps someone with a little more experience with content about women's sports teams could take a look at not only this one, but also some of the others in Category:Premier Ultimate League teams. They all appear to have been created by two or three editors and a few have been prodded already. For reference, I came across this via WP:ANI#User harassing specific Wikipedia Edit Thon and decided to take a look at some of the articles being discussed. I'm not suggesting any sort of mass deletion at AFD, but perhaps (once again) more eyes looking at these article can help sort out any issues they might have MOS:MOS-wise or otherwise. -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:23, 29 May 2020 (UTC)

NWSL expansion team

There is a discussion at Talk:National Women's Soccer League#NWSL in LA, where an editor is objecting to the notability of the league's Los Angeles expansion team being the first majority-woman owned professional sports team in the US. Notable college basketball coach

Snooker

The men's Snooker World Championships are currently being shown across the BBC in the UK with the final (made up of 5 sessions) on this weekend Saturday afternoon part one, Saturday afternoon part two, Saturday evening, Sunday afternoon and Sunday evening. I noticed that there wasn't much about the women's game in this project so I've added the project template to the individual talk pages of those in Category:Female snooker players and added WP:CUEGAMES and WP:SNOOKER to "related sports projects" in the WP:WikiProject Women's sport/Sidenav box. Article assessment

At Women in Red, we are always happy to see all the new articles relating to women in sports but I have noticed there is something of a backlog in assessment. Of some 97,000 articles tagged Women's sport on their talk pages, some 7,000 (or 7%) remain to be assessed. I realize this will require considerable effort but it would be useful if contributors could devote some of their time to it, even if it's simply a matter of adding "class=stub". Proposed change in sports notability policy

A proposal is pending that would prohibit the creation of sports biographies unless supported by "substantial coverage in at least one non-routine source". In other words, articles supported solely by statistical databases would not be permitted, and at least one example of WP:SIGCOV would be required to be included before an article could be created. Also, article creation based on Wikiproject Guidelines would be curtailed. Sports notability discussion

There is an interesting discussion at the Village Pump: Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Sports notability (with, currently, 13 subproposals - you might want to get a cup of tea before venturing over there). PamD 19:00, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

The outcome of this long-winded RfC has apparently struck out WP:NSPORTS in its current form. That's potentially quite good news for us as WP:NFOOTBALL, for example, tended to disadvantage women's football articles (particularly WP:FPL which was a nonsensical carnival of WP:BIAS). I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

importance rating

Hey guys
I noticed on the talk page of the Netherlands women's national football that the article was rated as low importance by this project. Surprised by this I checked the rating of the US team, and found it was of high importance. I do not believe that a team that lost the last World Cup final and won the last European championship should rate 2 levels below the American team in importance. Non/diffusing base category

Hi, I have been in discussions with an editor (user:Helpfulwikieditoryay) about sportswomen articles. They feel that the base category should be the nationality & sport with a gendered subcategory alongside it, but the convention is for only the gendered subcat: e.g Francesco Di Fulvio has only Italian male water polo players, Narumon Khanan has only Thai women's volleyball players, David Arnold (basketball) has only American men's basketball players and Eugénie Le Sommer has only French women's footballers (the last one is an outlier a bit as there is no complete set of Men's footballers, that is the default and Women's is an offshoot - half-hearted attempts have been made to remedy this but it has stalled due to the sheer numbers of male footballer articles involved). Regardless, it seems the footballers would still follow the pattern of other sports of the base category being nationality+gender+occupation, and not nationality+occupation with nationality+gender+occupation. This does stand opposed to the category display conventions for other occupations which have a non-diffusing ungendered nationality+occupation as a base, which I have suggested is because almost all sports are split by gender, so it is a more fundamental consideration for the person's identity than musicians / artists / politicians etc. However, I don't know that for sure. I think it's probably because most WP:FOOTBALL editors still assume [men's] football is the default? i.e. men's football is simply "football". I've understood the convention in the same way you have, and have always put female players in n women's footballers rather than in both - and left the main category to the men. But user:Helpfulwikieditoryay might have a point, and I know there have been sensitivities in the past about women articles being "ghettoised" into subcats (authors I think it was). I assumed we might have to live with the status quo, at least until we get the national team article titles changed to Scotland men's national football team etc. But if there's an appetite to do it now then why not? BTW respect to both of you for talking it to talk, the back and forth was getting a bit annoying on my watchlist. Bring back Daz Sampson (talk) 13:59, 19 January 2023 (UTC)

I think we should do it. It seems like the consensus is strongly in favor of labeling men's footballers men, rather than just having them as "footballers and women's footballers," which obviously sounds weird, also confusing to navigate. We just haven't done it yet because it's a big task, but it will be done sometime, so better start now. I also agree a lot about labelling it Scotland men's national football team. It's actually a struggle to find women's teams on search engines because of these poor quality wikipedia titles. Even if you type in "women" in the search, it will often still give you the men's team because the men's wikipedia title is so neutral. This can be quickly fixed. One major thing that makes these titles wrong is you should not have to read the contents of the article beforehand to merely find out what the title is even talking about; the title should tell you. Scouring the article for the word "men" in order figure out what the subject title is even referring to is a poor quality encyclopedia. You have no idea if a Scotland national team is men or women, and that should be the first thing you know right in the title, since the sport is separate. Some people might get lucky and assume it's men (while many other people do not), but it's not an encyclopedia's job to let wild and assume people assume something. Especially since not labelling all the national teams "men's" is inconsistent with other countries that do label them, such as the United States men's national soccer team. A user who's only been around for a couple of months seems to have gone on a nomination spree and nominated this article about a notable female athlete for deletion. This was then supported by another user who's only been around for a few days. This athlete is clearly notable - she's won a senior professional tournament in the world tour. That alone makes her notable already. And she's also represented her country. And she's the youngest ever European (male or female!) to win a professional tournament. First female to play a full pop warner football season

it is listed in Wikipedia that a girl name Jasmine was the first female to play pop warner in 03. I request this changed to Grace Reid who played a full season and multiple bowl games in her division. She played for the Atlantic Highlands/Highlands Tigers, Monmouth county NJ, in the mid 90s. I believe it was 96 but it could be 95. I have contacted pop warner headquarters askings for the change. Not trying to take away from the other girls accomplishments but she is not the first female to play a full season of pop warner football. Major RfC on capitalization of all our articles

I thought this was a done deal back in this 2022 RFC but obviously not. A handful of editors did another rfc with no sports projects input at all. And it's being challenged because we just noticed it. This could affect almost every single tennis and Olympic article we have, and goodness know how many other sports. Some may have already been moved it you weren't watching the article. And not just the article titles will be affected but all the player bios that link to the articles. Sure the links would be piped to the right place if thousands of articles moved, but if the wording in a bio still said 2023 Wimbledon Championships – Men's singles or Swimming at the 2020 Summer Olympics – Men's 200 metre backstroke that would likely need to be changed by hand. There is also talk of removing the ndash completely.

Perhaps this is what sports projects want and perhaps not. Either way I certainly don't want projects ill-informed as the last RfC was handled. Express your thoughts at the following rfc. Fyunck(click) (talk) 21:02, 20 September 2023 (UTC)
