Liberian election

Deletion of Bashir Ahmad (martial artist) wikipage

I understand that you have deleted or at least petitioned to put the page up for deletion due to the fact that it does not meet the wikipedia requirement of :

1:Subject of multiple independent articles/documentaries--articles should be from national or international media, not just local coverage. 2:Promotes a large number of events annually--the more fights it has sanctioned, the more notable. 3:Has actively been in business for several years - the longer the organization has been around, the more notable. 4:Large number of well-known and highly ranked fighters.

I had linked 3 articles mentioning him, all three of which are well known publications that include, Fighter's Only and Bloody Elbow

This guy is the pioneer of MMA in Pakistan, introduced the sport and runs the only MMA organization in the country, PAK MMA, and organizes events and seminars through out the country on a regular basis, the fact that there is almost no publication regarding MMA in south asia we donot have any media coverage, instead we use our own site to promote the sport in South Asia (www.pak-mma.com)

Has been in Martial Arts since 2006, actively competing in the Muay Thai circuit since 2008 and will make MMA debut in 2011 in One FC.

Hello, I should point out that MMANOT was never the criteria that these pages needed to meet in the frist place, it was wrong for the other users to use this, as because of how strict the criteria is on there it allows no other fighters that competes at a second tier promotion downwards. I should then state that the real criteria your page should of met was WP:GNG, and basically it means if enough articles exists on him, even if they are just plenty of Google search results on the same person, he is notable, I hope this helps you BOOG33Y. If the page didn't have enough articles at the time, just ask for the page to be reinstated so that you can easily add them in where appropriate. BigzMMA (talk) 12:59, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

Jake Bostwick

Hello, I believe your the user who closed the debate that this page as well as the page above was part of. I write to request the same thing but for Jake Bostwick. Last night he won the Cage Rage UK Middleweight Championship, he has competed for Cage Rage 11 times and Cage Rage UK 6 times. Now according to how the criteria on the WP:MMANOT page is set for fighters, he pretty much passes the majority of it anyway, but the fact that he meets WP:GNG as well should be a double bonus towards having his page reinstated. Because Cage Rage UK events are tape delayed and shown on TV on the Wednesday after their shows, we can expect more on the results of the events coming from the Thursday morning after it is shown (local time). But there are plenty of sources that talks about Bostwick, and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

An editor made a point about Main Page practice, normal practice was explained, the OP questioned the value of the practice given its outcome in a particular instance, and questioned whether the strict application was necessary in this instance. In what way is that not suitable to Talk:Main Page? A comment that the discussion seemed to have run its course would have been sufficient: slamming the door on the discussion and hiding it from the view of other readers seemed unnecessarily heavy-handed. Grammar

Hey Tone. With nothing but respect...you're wrong. In sentences where the reporting verb is in the present tense, the sentence doesn't change to past tense (as it would if the reporting verb were in the past tense). e.g. "A suicide bomb kills 26 people" → Syria reported that a suicide bomb killed 26 people → Syria reports that a suicide bomb kills 26 people. I'll spare you an English lesson, but you can look this up anywhere; here are some examples for reference. Best regards, Swarm ^X 00:08, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

You're mistaken. The present-tense event is the report. The deaths and injuries are separate events that occurred previously (and then were reported).

As a more obvious example, consider the dedication of a World War II memorial. One wouldn't say "So-and-so dedicates a memorial to soldiers who die in World War II." The deaths occurred long ago; it's the dedication that's being referenced in the present tense.

To quote one of the examples from a page to which you linked, "Ms. Fein says that she was angry." doesn't become "Ms. Fein says that she is angry.". The act of saying something, not the anger, is the present-tense event. —David Levy 04:52, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

No. If a direct quote is "a bombing occurred", "bombing" is the subject. If you state that as an indirect quotation ("He said a suicide bombing occurred"), "bombing" is still the subject. The reporting verb ("said", or in this case, "reports") does not become the subject. "She was angry" → she says she was angry is not a parallel. "She is angry" → she says she is angry would be the correct parallel. Why? Because headlines are stated in the present tense—hence why ITN blurbs are always in the present tense. The event here is that a suicide bombing killed 26 people. Since we're dealing with a news headline, we state it as "...bombing kills 26 people..." Since this cannot be independently confirmed, we're simply stating it as an indirect quotation: "Syria reports that a suicide bombing kills 26". Stating it as an indirect quotation like this doesn't somehow require us to modify the tense—quite the opposite. As explained above, present tense reporting verb = no change in the sentence's tense. Exactly. We don't transform a past-tense statement into a present-tense one when referring to said statement in the present tense. I'll quote your cited source directly:

One of the difficulties with indirect quotations involves the verb tense. The tense of the verb in the indirect quotation depends on the tense of the original statement.
When the original statement is in the present tense (as in our example), then the tense of the verb in the indirect quotation should match the tense of the main verb:

        Ms. Fein says, "I am angry."
        Ms. Fein says that she is angry.

        Ms. Fein said, "I am angry."
        Ms. Fein said that she was angry.

When the verb in the original statement is in the past tense, it must be taken a step back in our tense "time line" (see Chapter 5) when quoted indirectly.

        Ms. Fein says, "I was angry."
        Ms. Fein says that she was angry.

        Ms. Fein said, "I was angry."
        Ms. Fein said that she had been angry.

In the ITN case, the original statement is "A suicide bombing in Damascus killed 26 people and wounded more than 60." (or something to that effect).

Deletion of the UnSun page

The reasons for deleting the UnSun page were mostly claims that the band is non notable.

I disagree. The lead guitarist is famous, both with a strong cult following as well as international mainstream fame. Originating from Europe, and having little success in the US, does not make them non notable.

The band is signed to a major label, is distributed by universal records, has released commercial music videos, and tours with some of the most famous bands across several genres. They toured with Papa Roach and Tristania (seperately). They played with KMFDM, Opeth, Epica, and My Dying Bride. I can walk in to any music shop in Canada and buy one of their CDs.

While their North American popularity is limited, on the world stage they are certainly notable.

MSU Interview

Dear Tone,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and

Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's

Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we

teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community,

and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what

you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community

_New_class_at_MSU|HERE]], where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my

students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training,

motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one

of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of

communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)

• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will

never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.

• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an

interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.

• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics

review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have

been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak

Value-Chain Group

Tone,

I do not fully understand how Wikipedia works and why some have high authority and others do not with regard to what is posted. I try to navigate through the site properly but seem to not be very adept and therefore I failed at defending the subject page. Please help me to understand why Value-Chain Group was deleted from Wikipedia? I saw the alert and I thought I had responded to it, but it still was killed. Please advise why some organizations, like Supply-Chain Council, continue while this one is removed?

Question...

I was searching for information on Darren Craig who is partners with Jeff Nicholas. They started and operate a website hosting/creation business under the name "Uprising Creative" (http://www.theuprisingcreative.com/) I found Jeff Nicholas and a link to their business but when searching for Darren Craig I found that you deleted the page. Below is info on your deletion which, if I understand all of this, you deleted the page on the 2nd of December 2007 because you could not find a "Darren Craig". Is this correct? I found reference to Darren Craig through the Jason Mraz website. I am very new to editing for Wikipedia so I don't but I have joined just incase there is something I can contribute.

I am posting here to ask for editors to look at Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items and to comment at the talk page to discuss/vote on an amendment to the ITN/R list. I am posting this message on a number of editor's talk pages to encourage debate.

In connection to an ongoing debate on which items can appear on the front page under "In The News", "Recurring Items" are nominated events which require very little debate in the nomination process.

I propose the following amendment to the current ITN/R list. In addition I will put this on the talk page of as many editors as I can find who are contributors to ITN/C

At Wikipedia:In_the_news/Recurring_items, I propose the following amendment to section 3:

• At line 5, delete "and", and add after "territories" the words "and the world's twenty smallest nations".

Section 3, Line 5 would then read:

Alistair Slowe (footballer) - deletion review

You appear to have deleted Alistair Slowe's article. You are clearly not aware of this persons importance to lower league English football. He is important mainly because he is considered by some to be the single worst player to ever play professionally in the football league (your actual reason for deleting the article seems to be that he didn't make a league appearance which is incorrect.)

He is also notable due to scandal regarding nepotism, his wealthy father ran a football agents company and secured him a trial at Newcastle United only for him to "fail the medical" despite him being physically fit according to Yeovil Town who subsequently signed him.

In short, this self-professed "legend of Ghanian football" is a notable person in his own right, not only as a professional footballer but also for the intrigue surrounding his career. You should not have deleted the article, particularly on inaccurate grounds such as the one you gave. Please review your decision and reinstate the page. Hi - My name is David Conway, I'm a long-time Wikipedia editor. I am an honorary research fellow at University College London, and recently had my book 'Jewry in Music' published by Cambridge University Press. However I am not David Conway, who has had in some ways a similar career and who is (understandably) often confused with me (and vice versa). A thousand years ago I put up a brief article about myself as David Conway (music historian), largely to differentiate myself, which was removed as non-notable under yourself as admin; I couldn't be bothered much about it at the time. However, especially since my recent publication, confusion problems are springing up again. It seems to me that I might now (just) qualify for notability; I would like to put up a brief article, just stating the outline of who I am, without any bullshit (as indeed per the previous article), and perhaps citing online reviews of the book. Is this OK, do you think? If so I suppose it would be wise to revert the other DC as David Conway (philosopher) (which currently links to him)and to change [[David Conway]] to a disambig page. Deletion of some Robert Hoskins page

Hello, you won't remember this, but five years ago you deleted a page "Robert Hoskins" on the basis of BLP. Mousing around here [1] I wasn't able to figure out how to find that page, and therefore couldn't figure out which Robert Hoskins was involved.

The one I'm interested in published three science fiction novels in the 1960s. (He has a long section in "The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction".)

I don't know enough about him to recommend or write that science fiction author's Wiki page, I'm just interested in what he wrote.

I noticed that some accounts have deleted some post regarding Zhuge Liang's achievements, referring to the possible "fictionality" of the character's acts. It is discussed widely. However Marco Polo's travels have also not yet been proved by any historical accounts. Why is it not referred in the title, that it is fiction? In a similar way as Zhuge Liang have to be related as fiction. A friend of mine got a ban for two weeks of changing the title "In Fiction" to refer to as "Achievements". Why was my post changed from "Travels" to "In Fiction" back to "Travels" by you? What is the policy relating to Western and Eastern/Asian/Chinese history - are they operating under same guidance, rules and regulations? How can you comment or justify the previous changes in comparison with the two article moderating policies?

Hi, that's the section about the travels, so the title is appropriate. The questions about historicity is discussed in the next section. The structure of the other article is different so I think you cannot make the equivalence here. Well, that section could use another title, indeed. Marcel Hirscher

Regarding your changes in the Marcel Hirscher article. While it might be common just to list race victories, I am not aware of a specific rule which states that it is forbidden to list podiums as well. In my opinion, to be really informative about a racer's success, more information than just the victories is needed. If the top 3 results for Olympic Games and World Chamionships are listed, it would be only fair and logical to follow this pattern also when it comes to World Cup races. Frankly, I am not very happy that just just erase my work which took me quite some time to create just because you consider it as being "not a good idea". Hi. Sorry for that, however, no work is lost as it's still in the history. The thing with the podiums... I don't think there is a written rule but the way the articles on skiers (and the same goes for ski jumping) have been developing, the rule of a thumb (having some random examples) is the following: for skiers with no wins but some eventual podiums, top 10 or top 15 results can be listed (Thomas Mermillod Blondin) (though I am not a big fan of that). When there are some podiums, just listing podiums (Alexis Pinturault). When there are many wins (that are usually accompanied by several more podiums as well), it makes sense to list just the wins. For example, Hirscher with 40, Maze with 55 or Vonn with 100+ podiums. These are the elite skiers where the relevant information are the victories and discipline standings (titles). Listing all the achievements would just present a really long table, hard to navigate. Regarding World Championships and Olympics, these are presented separately, in a medal box, and not under the World Cup results. And these achievements are somehow or larger importance than World Cup podiums. I hope I've stated reasonable arguments, what do you think? Regards. --Tone 14:00, 25 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi again. Sure, you certainly do state resonable arguments. And I know very well that it is done this way. However, I'm exactly a fan of it, for reasons already stated. You just loose too much information by just giving information about a fraction (although the most important one) of a racer's success. Similarly, just because, say, Rihanna has had heaps of #1 singles, you don't just ignore the rest of her chart positions and solely list her #1s. No one would regard that as sufficiant. But well, as I said, I know and understand your arguments. To be honest, I more or less knew that my table would end up being deleted again. I was thinking a bit. For musicians, there are separate articles about their discography so it would be possible to create something similar for sportspeople. some years ago (2009, see reference below) your deleted an article I wrote about a US author. The deletion was done before I had the chance to comment or argue the deletion (my problem, of course, I didn't check in time... :-) )

I'd like to recreate the article (Same article, same topic, same person) and before i do that, I'd like your opinion on the following:

• This US author has published >6 books and has been translated in 20+ languages, he was a 5 times speaker at the United Nations on his topics, he hosts his own radio show
• What else as "neutral" information (apart from what I wrote in the original article) is needed to keep a lemma about an author on Wikipedia?

Having said that, I still don't understand why it was originally removed. Anyway, I'm probably too new to Wikipedia to understand the rules in its small print ... so please help me in learning how to write an article on an author so that it stays there. Hi. The article was deleted as a result of the mentioned deletion discussion, where the result was consensual. If you want to rewrite the article, maybe the best idea is to have a look at the criteria for biographical articles (WP:BIO). Well-argumented notability, backed by reliable secondary sources and I don't think there should be problems with the article staying. Living fossil blurb

Please, for the love of all that is holy, change the blurb to not include "living fossil". It is in fact a "Lazarus taxon" Consensus had developed that such usage is incorrect. I had originally opposed the item being posted at all, but changed to merely opposing the blurb here [2]. So all the opposition prior to that was arguing with me over the inclusion of the item on ITN at all. Please take a look at how arguments after I changed to simply opposing the blurb containing "living fossil" went. There was no real objection after that, and agreement that living fossil was wrong. We can discuss the blurb but the fact is that the article does not talk about the Lazarus taxon but about the living fossil, and so does the Nature paper. Hence, the blurb is technically correct (reporting what the sources say). The article should first reflect the change you propose (with sources). Janez Janša on the Main Page

Hi, I think that the appearance of Janša's conviction on the Main Page was completely out of proportions and a huge embarrassment. See sl:Pogovor:5. junij, where people are mocking the English Wikipedia for this. The decision is not valid yet at all and will surely be changed or even completely overturned by the higher courts. Well, this is what the ITN section is for, "to direct readers to articles that have been substantially updated to reflect recent or current events of wide interest". Convictions of high-ranking politicians are often posted, even if the ruling is later overturned. Actually, I believe we always post the first-level verdicts in such cases.
