Harry Watson (cyclist)

Hi T.seppelt I was wondering if you could add even more for Harry Watson the cyclist. Do you know who his parents were when he married. I am a genealogy researcher.

@Pizzathecat: I don't know anything about Harry Watson. My bot performs its task completely automatically. If you want to improve the article you should post something on Talk:Harry Watson (cyclist). Best regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 12:35, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Author with Multiple Pseudonyms, 3 VIAF numbers

KasparBot modified[1] the Emily Devenport page by taking the numbering out and posting just as {'{authority control}'}. However, Emily Devenport has two pseudonyms, and the VIAF authority code directs only to the books under her real name (or first published name). I couldn't figure out how to get into the Authority Control and link to her pseudonyms, so I have gone into her page and added two more authority control links, linking directly to her pseudonyms. If there is a more elegant way to do this, I would love to know. It would be even better if the VIAF page could be modified to list pseudonyms, but that does not appear to be a wiki-project, and so I am unable to link pseudonyms to the main author page, and vice-versa.

I am hoping you can clean up my edits, or approve them or something, as I am guessing you are the expert on the VIAF authority control linking to Wikipedia. Mburrell (talk) 23:36, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

It would appear to be a failure for the bot to correctly follow the authorised If Wikidata has conflicting information the Article will be skipped. There doesn't appear to have been a data-loss here; while there might be multiple VIAF identities, there only appears to have been a single one (VIAF=46339420) listed in the article a the point that Kasberbot modified it). T.seppelt, as the bot talk page is a redirect to here, so what's the procedure for stopping the bot until this is fixed—please could you take care of that. (Will the bot have recorded these incidents to allow them to be found and patched up?) —Sladen (talk) 23:49, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
I don't see any malfunction. The bot skips articles with more than one embedded template. They are logged as "unknown alias embedded or more than one template embedded". I will polish the error log and make it more accurate for a second run as mentioned before. Emily Devenport won't be affected but logged as an error in the second run. I hope that hits the nail on the top. --T.seppelt (talk) 06:44, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Mburrell, I don't know a better way than embedding this template several times. Although wikidata can do this better. They are qualifiers and quality ranks to express such a situation. d:Q3166765 is a good example. Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 06:57, 1 May 2015 (UTC)
Can't we put the template on members for Category:Redirects_from_pseudonyms? Stuartyeates (talk) 10:39, 2 May 2015 (UTC)
Putting information on redirect pages is in my eyes paradox. But this is my opinion. I would prefer a Wikipedia article with multiple templates and a Wikidata entity with multiple claims distinguished by qualifiers. --T.seppelt (talk) 13:49, 3 May 2015 (UTC)
How a paradox? The redirect is the representation of the name (rather than the object which the name identifies) and seems ideal to me. Stuartyeates (talk) 21:29, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
Second. Alternatively there are different objects involved, namely the biological person and several personae distinct from that. In that case it is mandatory to keep those identifiers out of the wikipedia article and the wikidata item. Having AC numbers on the redirect pages may help future identification with wikidata items for the pseudonyms, although at the moment they have to remain dormant. -- Gymel (talk) 06:31, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Okay. I agree with you. AC numbers on redirects can be useful. But should we really create wikidata items for the person itself and separately for his/her pseudonyms? Wikidata items describe entities. The person is an entity. But if the pseudonym is also an entity we will need items for main names too. One item for the person, one for the name and multiple ones for the pseudonyms. --T.seppelt (talk) 17:30, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Probably we shouldn't, since wikidata is strongly tied to wikipedia articles and those for persons are "biographical" in nature. Even elaborate and clearly shaped alternative personas like Barbara Vine at Ruth Rendell are included in the article as mere "aspects" of the person. Libraries, on the other hand, are increasingly acting the opposite way, i.e. they accept people with different "bibliographic identities" and try to cope with that by interlinking the corresponding records instead of forcibly joining them at some main identity. I also would consider it not unthinkable that future interpretations of WP:BLP or whatever could imply a similar shift here: Last year I heard a quite interesting scholarly lecture about an author whose biography, although backed by facts, was subject to the exact same fictionalization process as the fictional works he is renowned for (and "biography" does not mean his autobiography as a book, but any single piece of paper we know about, beginning with the school compositions of him as a boy...). Thus all we can ever know about this author is about his "public figure" and there is nothing left about his "true" self. Or as the scholar put it: The person deliberately and completely vanished behind the author. A future shift away from wikipedia articles for "biological" persons to the (possibly multiple) identities crafted or assumed by these persons would not surprise me at all. As for wikidata there could also be different reasons to allow items for pseudonyms: Sometimes the pseudonyms are quite elaborate and for example have different birth dates or other biographical aspects than the biological person (sorry, no example at hand). Expresssing this by different items might be handier than equipping one item with many conflicting properties and the qualifiers necessary to straighten this out. After all, I'm convinced that basing "biography" on "biology" is just a cultural convention. Very sound, but not prescribed by some law of nature. -- Gymel (talk) 20:51, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Library cataloguing rules have a ground truth of what was intended to be published on the title page of works (i.e. what was published, minus accidental errors (famously the wrong cut and pasted ISBN)). Library cataloguing rules are entirely blind to the person behind the pseudonym until a new edition is published with 'publishing as' or similar weasel words. Archival cataloguing rules are quite different, and this is a significant difference between library information systems and archival information systems. Stuartyeates (talk) 21:01, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
Unfortunately I have no source for this but a) (halfway consistently) naming authors on the book is a quite recent phenomenon due to cultural changes of the 18th or early 19th century b) there were times in history where librarians were keen to lift pseudonyms (or they simply had the necessary ressources to pursue this task). Of course you are right in stating that the current practice is chiefly motivated by the aim of more faithfully reproducing that what can be found "on the item" (and secondarily by being more time-efficient) but let me predict that in times where literally billions of people have accounts at different social networks (who will ascertain that my facebook account is always acting coherently with my twitter posts?) our attitude towards "identity" will change massively within the next decade. -- Gymel (talk) 21:37, 5 May 2015 (UTC)
You are absolutely correct in these historical details. However we're discussing interoperability with VIAF, GND and the like, which are based in currently library practice, which {{Authority Control}} conforms to. Future conceptualisations of identity will require different templates and implementations. Stuartyeates (talk) 00:44, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Well, as for 2015 it is easy to state that "bibliography" has slightly more entities than "biography". And while wikidata could take either approach the current practise is clearly the wikipedia, "biographic" one. -- Gymel (talk) 04:35, 6 May 2015 (UTC)
Okay. Both of you have much more experiences with such data than I have. Putting AC information on redirects seems to be a good solution. To give Wikipedia a new concept of storing identities we will need a larger discussion. Kind regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 12:45, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Pteridophyte

KasparBot added an incorrect NDL linkage to this page. The Wikipedia article is about the informal grouping of free-sporing vascular plants, but the NDL target is apparently for the formal scientific taxon Pteridophyta (=Fern on Wikipedia). --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:36, 18 May 2015 (UTC)

@EncycloPetey: I corrected the mistake and readded the template. It wasn't a mistake of KasparBot. The mistake was at Wikidata. Please check in future the corresponding Wikidata items (d:Special:ItemByTitle). Thank you, --T.seppelt (talk) 16:28, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
There are so many errors in the plant linkages at Wikidata, and people deliberately making them (who are banned from Wikipedia, and from other wiki projects), that I have given up doing any botany there. But thanks for sorting this out. --EncycloPetey (talk) 01:34, 21 May 2015 (UTC)

I note from Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/KasparBot that "If Wikidata has conflicting information the Article will be skipped". T.seppelt: Given the long-run time (estimated >1 week to go), is there a chance we could have a partial/daily log-to-date to get a better idea in the mean-time. —Sladen (talk) 14:51, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Please have a look as User:KasparBot/Log. I think splitting the log in special logs for the different error types is a good idea. What do you think? --T.seppelt (talk) 15:39, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. This appears to be only warnings/errors rather than all (including successful) changes? It may also be useful to add timestamps to allow matching up and having some idea what revision was trying to be parsed when the warning state was activated. —Sladen (talk) 17:04, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Thank you, that looks quite useful. The current program gives no timestamps and edits and warning/errors in different files. For a second run I will enhance the debugging part. It is maybe a good idea to collect some more improvements. Is it helpful to collect these different value pairs? --T.seppelt (talk) 19:37, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
Several of those "unknown properties" seem to result from people copying the equivalent template, "Normdaten", from the German-language Wikipedia. Here, for example. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 21:05, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
I see. Using Normdaten as an equal alias for Authority control is useful. But isn't there a difference between PND and GND? I also think it wouldn't be good to ignore GNDName and GNDfehlt. They express some kind of missing accuracy. --T.seppelt (talk) 22:29, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
@T.seppelt: GND "integrates the content of" PND, according to Integrated Authority File. I'm not clear what GNDName and GNDfehlt tell us. Your bot could usefully convert the string <code>{{Normdaten</code> to <code>{{Authority control</code>, as it encounters it. There are 257 transclusions. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 14:18, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
@Pigsonthewing: I just replaced <code>{{Normdaten</code> with <code>{{Authority control</code>. These articles will be affected by a second run. Probably I will ignore GNDName and GNDfehlt and remove them if they appear. PND seems to my an alias of GND so I move them to Wikidata? --T.seppelt (talk) 15:32, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

Erroneous detection of categories inside comment?

This edit does not look right to me. It appears the bot has erroneously detected the start of the categories inside a comment. It probably ought to be ignoring things in comments. Mitch Ames (talk) 13:05, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

@Mitch Ames: thank you. Comments are a problem right now. The bot is out of service until I fixed it. --T.seppelt (talk) 13:29, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

Authoritycontrol multiplication

hi seppel, the bot seems to add multiple authoritycontrols. --ThurnerRupert (talk) 07:41, 25 May 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, the template was commented out. I am going to fix this bug. --T.seppelt (talk) 07:43, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Also could your bot check for Category:Articles with MusicBrainz artist links before it edits. I typically do not add {{Authority control}} if I do not see any value in it. – Allen4names (contributions) 06:03, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
@Allen4names: Can you give an example for that?
@ThurnerRupert: I will improve the code soon, until than the bot is out of service. --T.seppelt (talk) 11:51, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
I will use the edit of Rip Slyme for an example. I am concerned however that at some point the example may turn bad as the software may not take into account the need in this case to show what the authority control would have displayed at the time, say if someone added VIAF data, then there would be two links where only one should be in this diff. – Allen4names (contributions) 13:59, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
According to the bot's task the template is added to all articles with at least one piece of ac information on the corresponding Wikidata item. The need is given at this point because at least one link gives the user at least one option to continue his reading at a corresponding database entry (e.g. at MusicBrainz). Anyway, Template Talk:Authority control is the right place to discuss the general benefit of authority control information. Kind regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 14:13, 27 May 2015 (UTC)
It's seems I just can't make myself clear so just go ahead and have your bot add duplicate links to the same web page without adding anything else of value. Regards. – Allen4names (contributions) 02:22, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
Sorry Allen4names, I didn't understand your point. You are right, the bot should check for other already embedded template with similar functionality. Regards, — T.seppelt (talk) 14:14, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Authority control on ca.wiki

I didn't realize that ca:template:autoritat uses empty values for avoiding to show an ID in a page for any reason. Example: ca:Special:Diff/15289000. I have fixed the tracking category, now it does not include pages with only empty parameters. Please, do not remove them. --Vriullop (talk) 16:33, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

@Vriullop: Oh, I didn't know that. I adjusted the code, but it is probably to late. The bot edited 587 pages without considering that rule. It would be laborious to revert all those edits. Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 19:26, 28 May 2015 (UTC)
No matter. Probably this rule was not much used, but people want to have some control over it. --Vriullop (talk) 07:49, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Remark

Today I came with a very strange remark. Why we need the Authority control template and the info does not show up directly from Wikidata? Just asking. -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:45, 17 May 2015 (UTC)

I cannot get your point. Could you clarify? Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 16:17, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: Because the infrastructure does not support that. I'm sure a volunteer developer could make that happen in MediaWiki, or we could make some improvement via Javascript to the main UI, but barring those two options, a separate template such as {{authority control}} is probably preferable. --Izno (talk) 23:15, 19 May 2015 (UTC)
On a related note, could someone please refer me to a page explaining the benefits of having the authority control information in the articles? I mean, if someone needs it, it's easily accessible on Wikidata; what's the point of having it in every single article as well? (Disclaimer: I know very little about authority control, but would like to gain a better understanding). Thanks.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); May 20, 2015; 12:19 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Authority control gives an introduction to the benefits of AC information in Wikipedia articles. Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 12:43, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
Duh me. Thanks! But perhaps it's this page that should be linked from the {{Authority control}} template, instead of the encyclopedic authority control article it is linking to currently? I see (now) that article links to Help:Authority control from the hat (and the latter article links to the WP namespace), but that's a chain I totally overlooked at first, so many others might not be seeing it as well. Cheers,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); May 20, 2015; 13:09 (UTC)
I agree with you. This linking stuff is very complicated. There were many discussions concerning that at Template talk:Authority control. Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 13:14, 20 May 2015 (UTC)
Actually, come to think of it, it does make sense to link the template to an encyclopedic article instead of to a page in Wikipedia namespace. Articles, after all, exist to serve readers, not editors confused the same way I was :) Many readers might want to know what "authority control" is, but wouldn't necessarily care about Wikipedia's policies regarding it or how exactly it is being handled. Thanks again for your help and answering my questions.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); May 20, 2015; 14:41 (UTC)

Are there any tracking categories for "Authority control with parameters"? Is there any estimate of when we 'll can simplify the template code in the English Wikipedia so that it does not support parameters anymore? -- Magioladitis (talk) 22:44, 23 May 2015 (UTC)

As far as I know enwiki hasn't got such a category. Please have a look at d:Wikidata:WikiProject Authority control/Status. We should implement such a tracking catagory to complete stage 2 and 3. I think we need some more time bedire we can simplify the code. It is controversial too (d:Wikidata talk:WikiProject Authority control). Regards, -- T.seppelt (talk) 05:02, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
@Magioladitis: The template must continue to support parameters, because it is used on user pages. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 09:19, 24 May 2015 (UTC)
Yes, that's true. We should talk about a special template for user pages... Implementing this tracking category is nevertheless the right way. Regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 09:32, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Frietjes is it possible that you create a tracking category for "Authority control with parameters"? -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:10, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

Magioladitis, see Category:Pages using authority control with parameters, but will probably take some time to fill up if there are any left. Frietjes (talk) 13:08, 24 May 2015 (UTC)

I guess your bot could transfer data to Wikidata using Category:VIAF not on Wikidata. -- Magioladitis (talk) 21:20, 31 May 2015 (UTC)

Louis V. Gerstner Jr. wiki page - error

I am doing research for a graduate Leadership class at Northwestern and found that a few of the links on the page either don't point to relevant content or are dead. Wish I could say I could give them all to you but I am flying to my deadline. Trying to be a good citizen, however. Here's the latest.

In his memoir, Gerstner described the turnaround as difficult and often wrenching for an IBM culture that had become insular and balkanized. After he arrived, over 100,000 employees were laid off from a company that had maintained a lifetime employment practice from its inception.[15]

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_V._Gerstner_Jr.#cite_note-15 > Berger, Joseph (December 22, 1993). "The Pain of Layoffs for Ex-Senior I.B.M. If you search with Google for the following phrase it will return appropriate citations: ibm 100 000 job cuts - Google Search https://www.google.com/search?q=ibm+100+000+job+cuts&espv=2&biw=1605&bih=1014&source=lnt&tbs=cdr%3A1%2Ccd_min%3A1993%2Ccd_max%3A1994&tbm=

Need technical help with "The Bruthers (garage rock band)" article

I just created a new article for The Bruthers, but I cannot name it "The Bruthers" (as I would like) because that title re-directs to the section about this same band in the Joe Delia article. Joe (and his three brothers) were members of this band in the 60s. So could you please make it such that the article can be titled "The Bruthers," rather than "The Bruthers (garage rock band)" as it currently is (and remove the re-direct). Also: if you see any format tidy-ups need there, you are more than welcome. Thanks. Garagepunk66 (talk) 01:07, 12 June 2015 (UTC)

Diana Damrau removed link to commonswiki

I admit that I'm no expert in the way Wikidata interacts with other Wikimedia sites, but after I added Commons:Category:Diana Damrau at the Wikidata entry for Diana Damrau, all 19 interwiki links showed up on her Commons category. I am now surprised to see you removed it from Damrau's Wikidata item a few hours later. Now her Commons category only shows the EN link because that's hard-coded into that category page there. Cheers, Michael Bednarek (talk) 15:14, 13 June 2015 (UTC)

Dear User:Michael Bednarek, I understand the benefit of your edit and of adding commons links as wikidata sitelinks but it is at least controversial. Connecting a wp article with a commons category is a cross namespace association, which is in my eyes paradox. Using this method is allowed. In my eyes it is not very logical. Best wishes, -- T.seppelt (talk) 13:52, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
The information about cross-namespace interwiki links is a bit contradictory; at c:Commons:Wikidata: "By convention, article-like items should only be sitelinked to gallery pages on Commons, and category-like items should only be sitelinked to category pages." but "A category page should contain ... Interwiki links to the article or category with the same topic in Wikipedia" at c:Commons:Categories, and at d:Wikidata:Wikimedia Commons/Development it says: "There are no namespace restrictions on linking items with galleries and categories. ... Commons categories correspond to both Wikipedia articles and Wikipedia categories. A Commons category page can thus link to either Wikipedia categories (if they exist) or to Wikipedia articles. Links to Wikipedia articles are more common, but sometimes links to Wikipedia categories are preferred." On Commons, categories are not subject to the same restrictions as on Wikipedia – there will never be a Category:Diana Damrau on Wikipedia, but there is of course c:Category:Diana Damrau. The concept of galleries on Commons was never clear to me; they seem like works of fan boys, and importantly, much fewer in number than categories. I found many Commons categories linked to Wikipedia articles, both through Wikidata and via explicit interwiki links. In light of contradictory advice and wide-spread practice, I would like to restore the Commons category link for the Damrau Wikidata entry. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 01:43, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
We need a debate on the principles. Until we have more precise guidelines and technical solutions we should restore the link. Regards, -- T.seppelt (talk) 13:38, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

KasparBot: Authority control on non-biography articles

Hello. This strikes me as odd: an authority control template linking to what I guess is a library subject heading rather than an author heading. How about holding the authority control data by wikidata and remove the Authority control templates

Hi. I am now running a robot trying to add {{Authority control}} to every zhwiki page that has the authority control information. I think it is better display it as interwiki language links instead of adding a template, but I am not sure if the idea is reasonable. How about showing the authority control data like the language links displayed in the left block, and remove all authority control templates?

If we should add the Authority control template; in my case, there're too many pages to check. I can only get 50 pages once time. (See zh:User:cewbot/log/20150109.) Wikipedia article with Authority control + VIAF, but no Wikidata property

Hi - If a Wikipedia article has the Authority Control template populated with a VIAF number, and if Wikidata does not have a corresponding property, does this bot create the Wikidata property? Pinging @SusunW: as I know this interests her, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 04:04, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

watching and thanks Rosiestep SusunW (talk) 04:12, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Yes, the bot does exactly that. What is the problem? Warm regards, --T.seppelt (talk) 04:15, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Lots of women don't get picked up by authority control ... too many variants on names I'm guessing. But, if I find them and input it say as "authority control|#####" it does not show in Wikidata. I think Rosiestep is asking this because she has manually been fixing them for me and if a bot can do it, will be a huge time saver. SusunW (talk) 04:18, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
My bot is copying such identifiers beginning every night at 0:00 UTC. Rosiestop doesn't have to do this manually. --T.seppelt (talk) 05:03, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
I can only tell you that it doesn't always work. Mary Nelson Winslow is one that I had input and Rosiestep manually input it. I just found another (I write a lot of articles so it is hard to remember which ones this effects) Flora de Oliveira Lima. You will see that I have input "Authority control|19431909" in squiggly brackets. We can check it tomorrow to see if it shows up. Maybe I am not inputting the format for the number correctly? SusunW (talk) 05:44, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

No problem with the bot. We're just trying to sort out what it does. I believe it can be a real timesaver for us at WP:WikiProject Women writers as all of the bios in its scope should have an Authority control template; and most/all authors have a VIAF number. Many editors don't want to leave Wikipedia and enter the Wikidata universe to create a Wikidata property. Another question... If I add the Authority control template to a Wikipedia article, but no VIAF number, does your bot create a Wikidata property? --Rosiestep (talk) 13:39, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

@SusunW: Did you mean this: {{Authority control|VIAF=999999999}}. --Rosiestep (talk) 13:41, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@Rosiestep and SusunW: In Mary Nelson Winslow, you entered {{Authority control|VIAF:92900513}}; the correct format is {{Authority control|VIAF=92900513}} (using an equals sign, not a colon). In Flora de Oliveira Lima, you entered {{Authority control|19431909}}, without specifying VIAF=. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 13:44, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
@Andy: exactly, and thank you!
I'm looking for clarification, though, if adding {{Authority control}} alone to a bio is enough to trigger this bot (or some bot) to create a Wikidata property, if no Wikidata property already exists. And if not, is there a different "magic word" in a Wikipedia biography which triggers a bot to create a Wikidata property? All this assumes there is no Wikidata property already; I have another group of questions if there already is one. We are creating close to 1,000 new women's biographies a month through WP:WikiProject Women in Red and it's important for those articles to have a Wikidata property and if a bot can create it, it will be helpful for tracking progress with the WIGI research, etc. Adding @Magnus Manske:. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:21, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

Adding {{authority control}} without any parameters will not cause the bot to run. The template will display in the article with whatever values are already in Wikidata.

When you use the word "property", I think you mean to use the word "statement", which is the phrase used when you add a property in Wikidata with some value to a Wikidata item (an "item" is the Wikidata analog to a Wikipedia article). For a touch more clarification as an example: 19431909 is a value, |VIAF= is the equivalent of a property, and |VIAF=19431909 is the equivalent of a statement. --Izno (talk) 14:28, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

May I ask for clarification here? Are you talking about a bot creating Wikidata items where non exist, or about syncing Authority Control data between an article and an associated Wikidata item? I think there is no bot doing the former, but KasparBot appears to do the latter. Creating Wikidata items automatically is problematic (as in, essentially impossible), since an item for that entity might already exist. There are over 40K articles on English Wikipedia that have no Wikidata item. I am trying to reduce this number, but it is a rather hopeless endeavor alone. Feel free to chime in! --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:34, 6 October 2015 (UTC)

KasparBots job is to move the VIAF number recorded in {{Authority control|VIAF=92900513}} to an appropriate statement in the associated Wikidata item for the article and susequently (if there is no conflict) removes the number from the template here, leaving an "empty" {{Authority control}} which gets its values for display from Wikidata. The Bot does not conduct any research on its own in order to find the VIAF number(s) for the article's subject nor does it create a new Wikidata item for the article when it's not yet connected to one (at least to my knowledge: There are other bots whose task is to create "missing" Wikidata items, but they usually lag much behind in order to give editors the chance to identify the article with an already existing wikidata item). Hope that helps a bit. -- Gymel (talk) 14:37, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Gymel is completely right. To make it clear: My bot only moves information. No items are created. As long as you follow the wiki syntax (|VIAF=99999) my bot takes care of the provided statements. -- T.seppelt (talk) 14:45, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you all for the clarifications. I think I see exactly what all of this means and now I understand the correct format. On Flora de Oliveira Lima she now has an Authority Control VIAF statement at the bottom of the page, but there still does not appear to be a WikiData item. Thus, as Magnus Manske said, this will not solve the entire issue that Rosiestep and I would like for it to, but it solves a piece of it. SusunW (talk) 15:02, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Creating a bunch of items now, including the one for your example. --Magnus Manske (talk) 15:45, 6 October 2015 (UTC)
Thank you T.seppelt for answering our questions. I think I understand Wikidata better now. --Rosiestep (talk) 01:46, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

Persondata migration and deletion

T.seppelt: Thank you for this: [10]. A plan like yours should have been formulated months ago to parse the remaining usable information in Persondata which has not already been transferred to Wikidata, but the parties leading this parade seem determined to delete whatever is left as "unusable." Contrary to a lot of the misinformation that has been spread in the several RfC discussions on this topic, there remains a lot of usable data, but there are questions of sorting and transfer that seem to be beyond the skill set of the discussion participants. If you are willing to take this on as a bot project of your own, I would be happy to share my anecdotal experiences from manually transferring Persondata to Wikidata for close to 2000 articles over the past four months. Please let me know. Thanks. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 22:30, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

@Dirtlawyer1: I have the feeling that we don't have consensus on the usability of the data yet. As I mentioned at the Bot request page the effort differs between the deleting and the copying/checking solution. I have no idea about the data quality of Persondata but I am afraid of the time we have to spend to do this migration semi-automatically. The increased quality (and quantity secondly) of the data on Wikidata is the key aim anyways. Let's see how the discussion is going on and than talk about your experiences again. Thank you very much in advance   -- T.seppelt (talk) 11:24, 30 October 2015 (UTC)
We have consensus, in the first RfC. Persondata is deprecated, and is to be removed. In the extensive discussion there, and in the Wikidata discussion to which it linked, there was no consensus for further copying of data by a bot. IAAF

Maybe you could use your bot to fix Category:IAAF_template_using_deprecated_parameter? Seems like a task similar to what you already do. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 09:07, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

@Magioladitis: As far as I understand it this category tracks pages using the deprecated letter parameter. Can I just delete these properties? -- T.seppelt (talk) 15:04, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
T.seppelt whatever to remove the tracking category. I thought it had to do with info not in Wikidata. I am good either way. -- Magioladitis (talk) 15:34, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Never mind! I did it! -- Magioladitis (talk) 08:20, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I hope I can help next time -- T.seppelt (talk) 17:57, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

ArbCom elections are now open!

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Laurence Guittard page

Your last edit apparently deleted the photo attached to this page. Why? I work with Laurence Guittard and will be correcting and adding information to this page and I want to make sure your bot won't interfere. Jmbrowne9 (talk) 21:47, 30 November 2015 (UTC)

Fernand Raux page

Problems with wikidata challenges

Hi, I am having some problems with the challenges which have started appearing. Very good initiative though, I hope they can be sorted out:

  1. I get "CSRF detected" when I try to connect (or authorise or whatever) Kasparbot, so I can't respond to any of the issues. Using Firefox on Windows 10 (I'll try Suse later). Normally with NoScript running, but I get this message even when I disable it.
  2. The links to properties such as P19 and P20 are incorrect, wikidata reports "does not exist" even though they clearly do.

-- Mirokado (talk) 18:56, 31 January 2016 (UTC)

I'm guessing you're talking about the list of article challenges? Yes, those should link to d:Property:P19 and etc. --Izno (talk) 20:47, 31 January 2016 (UTC)
@Mirokado and Izno: the links are now correct. The first point seams to be a problem with the OAuth Extension. It is working for a lot of other users. Can you just try to purge your cache, login again and authorize? It should not be related to JavaScript since the whole process is on the server side. Thank you for the feedback! -- T.seppelt (talk) 09:57, 1 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks for the responses. I did more-or-less as you suggested (purged the Kasparbot welcome page and tried to authorise from a different challenge page) and it worked this time. --Mirokado (talk) 16:21, 3 February 2016 (UTC)
@Mirokado: Great. Thank you for your help. -- T.seppelt (talk) 16:19, 4 February 2016 (UTC)
