Avoiding damage by bots

There are (or were? about a year ago) some (or at least one) bot(s) running on en.Wikipedia that didn't understand the concept of "a template for conveniently copying/pasting references", and got rid of these blindly. I used to use html comments, and after discussing with the bot owners, accepted to switch to {{void}} instead, since the bots (or at least that bot) knew how to ignore {{void}} content. Thank you for contacting me about this. Comments are (as you were originally doing) the technically correct way of adding such editing helpers. Any bot whose job is to parse templates is incorrectly programmed if it also parses what happen to look like templates in comments. If the bot's job is to remove "irrelevant" comments, then the author must update a whitelist to support your usage.

That said, I don't want to distract from the important work of adding reliably sourced content to these articles. I use a "little script" to help me prepare some edits (generally, any with "nn×" appearing in the edit summary, which I make and check manually and individually) and I will update that to skip {{void}} and {{^}}. I don't understand why the bot owner made you use these, they are more difficult to parse because it is necessary to parse what is being ignored in order to find the correct terminating '}}'. Article length bar

Hi, Mirokado. I'm writing to tell you about new template {{Article length bar}} ({{Albar}} ). I found you because of your earlier use of the template {{Article length rating}} (alias {{Alr}}). I had an application which also needed a graphic for article length, but I found Alr opaque in its symbology, and also it tops out at 20kb, which I think of as start-class, or just past stub; that is way too early for my purpose. My use case is more about checking whether an article is getting close to being too big and approaching the threshold for splitting, or already exceeding it, while Alr appears to be better for measuring stubs. Anyway, don't know if you stopped using Alr because you no longer had a need for it, or you gave up on it because it didn't really work for you, either.

The new {{Albar}} is very configurable, you can use it in default mode to get {{Albar|Jean Sibelius}} → 119k, for example. Here's France , Germany , and Italy rendered as sparklines. Lots more configurability, and if you still have a need for a graphic length symbol, I'd love to see your applications for it. It's still new, and I'm still thinking of other enhancements (including a prose-words mode: long-term, and not simple) and if you have any wish-list items for it, please add them to the template talk page.
