Nick Carbó

Hi again Shalor. I believe that one of the students you're helping is working on improving this article. While I think they have made some pretty good improvements, there's still seems to be a heavy reliance on primary sources (interviews with the subject) that might not be OK per WP:BLPPRIMARY for some of the claims made. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:40, 13 December 2018 (UTC)

I'm also a little concerned as to why Bulaklak64 has been editing User:Ahugebox/sandbox2. If there's a connection between the subject of the article and "Bulaklak64" and "Ahugebox" is aware of this connection, then there might be some WP:COI concerns with respect to both editors. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:14, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Marchjuly - I'm not aware of any ties between the stated editors and Carbó offhand. It looks like the new editor started editing their sandbox after the student made some large edits, so it's entirely possible that they came across this at random - but then the student hasn't reached out to me about this. I'll definitely investigate this. Thank you for bringing this to my attention! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:41, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
    • No problem. It just seems a little weird. The student mentioned in User talk:Ahugebox#Thanks Shalor! A few questions: that he has been in contact with Carbó; so, perhaps the sandbox was mentioned at that time. Anyway, there was another account NCarbo who edited the article a few months back; so, maybe "BulaklaK64" is connected somehow to that account. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:11, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
    • Just going to add that BulaklaK64 and NCarbo have been checkuser blocked. So, if "Ahugebox" was interacting with either of them, he/she probably should be advised to stop. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:09, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Thumping copyvio by instructor

[1] !!! Johnbod (talk) 22:39, 14 December 2018 (UTC)

@Johnbod: I was about to place this on their talk page:
Info about Wikipedia and copyright
but I wonder if that’s too embarrassing or would sap her authority with her students? So I canceled out before hitting “Publish”. Still, a pretty serious violation. In a case like this, I think WP:WWDD (What Would Diannaa Do) applies. Mathglot (talk) 06:05, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Indeed. It also duplicated quite a lot that was already in the article. Johnbod (talk) 06:14, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
At the same time, pointing it out might show her students that even though mistakes which are made can be fixed, they still should do their best to avoid them, especially ones like this. Perhaps you could do so without a scary template? Maybe she can use her mistake as a teachable moment for her students to impress upon them that that they are not operating in a vacuum when they edit and that they are going to be expected to follow relevant policies and guidelines just like all editors. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:49, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
I've done revision deletion and left a short note on the the user talk page. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 13:55, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

Deletion discussion about Deirdre Eberly Lashgari

Hello, Shalor (Wiki Ed),

I wanted to let you know that there's a discussion about whether Deirdre Eberly Lashgari should be deleted. Your comments are welcome at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deirdre Eberly Lashgari .

If you're new to the process, articles for deletion is a group discussion (not a vote!) that usually lasts seven days. If you need it, there is a guide on how to contribute. Last but not least, you are highly encouraged to continue improving the article; just be sure not to remove the tag about the deletion nomination from the top.

Thanks,

Onel5969 TT me 15:22, 15 December 2018 (UTC)

(talk page watcher)@Onel5969: I think Shalor created the page, but I don't think she's the creator of the article. It looks like it was created by a student named Basirinasim she was helping. You probably should let them know about the AfD. -- Marchjuly (talk) 15:34, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up, Marchjuly - the notification is supposed to go out automatically to the article's creator. Don't know what happened here. Will post on their talk page. Onel5969 TT me 15:39, 15 December 2018 (UTC)
It looks like Shalor was the editor who technically created the page, and then the content was subsequently added by the student. The software probably just looks for the first edit made since that is almost always the "creator" of the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:03, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

I think the close paraphrasing/copyvio material that was removed and revdeled has been re-added by the same student. I didn't see the previous additions; it's possible that this is new close paraphrasing/copyvio material. Either way, I've reverted the additions. Ca2james (talk) 10:21, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

Need help on article

Hello, Shalor! Recently, the course project article my group and I made for Jacques Arragon was nominated for deletion, but then moved to draft space by a user. We wanted to know if you'd be so kind as to check/review/give feedback our article and see if it is ready for live space. My group has added more information and we believe to have made sufficient edits to meet the expectations. Thank you so much!Auxoflores (talk) 01:14, 16 December 2018 (UTC)

removing work

Hello,

I was told that my entire contriubtion to Ellen Swallow Richards was removed due to less than 100 characters being plagerized. It was about 2,000 characters plagarized with hours of research put in for a final grade in my historical methods class. Is there any way my work can be put back on, just so I do not fail the class. The plagarism was a mistake and I can prove that I had never been on the website that the claim came from.

Thank you,

DYK for The Winter Soldier (2018 novel)

On 21 December 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article The Winter Soldier (2018 novel), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that literary critic Ron Charles said that the "beauty of Daniel Mason's new novel, The Winter Soldier, persists even through scenes of unspeakable agony"? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/The Winter Soldier (2018 novel). You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, The Winter Soldier (2018 novel)), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Merger proposal for Jewish refugees teaching in black colleges

This article was created for the class that you are a subject matter expert on. I copyedited the article but think it does not merit its own article. Instead I think it should be merged with the HBCU article. Rational:

  • The article is repetitive and the crux of the information could be relayed in a paragraph.
  • The notable people are not notable and really do not need to be included. Interesting for a paper, not so interesting for Wikipedia.
  • The article seems to have some WP:SYNTH problems and fails WP:V in some instances.
  • The article is an orphan and I can't think of many places other than the HBCU article where it might be linked to. In any case, if there are others, it can be anchored in HBCU.
  • The article title is awkward.

No one has weighed in on the merger discussion so I was just going to go ahead and do the work to merge it but after I am done that would mean deleting the article created by a student. I did not want to do that before discussing with someone overseeing the course. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 19:20, 23 December 2018 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) PopularOutcast, did you list your proposed move at Requested moves and at all the relevant WikiProjects? There are five or six million articles here, it's not at all certain that anyone will ever see your merger proposal if it's not advertised properly. I'll comment at the proposal. Mathglot (talk) 03:29, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, imho there is no reason to discuss with someone overseeing the course, more than with any other interested and capable editor. I'd certainly invite them to any discussion as a courtesy, but their opinion carries no extra weight of authority due to credentials, and based on their assignment of non-existing articles to brand new users, would in my mind give their opinion considerably less weight in a deletion discussion than an average editor who's been around and taken part in Afds before. Mathglot (talk) 05:31, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
Mathglot, I do not know the processes well so I probably have not done everything I was supposed to. My reading of the guidelines were that I needed to have a discussion about a merger before listing the request anywhere. I had not considered that I needed to list it at the WikiProjects. I will do that in the next couple of days as I have time.
As for your second point, I did post here as a matter of courtesy and probably would not have let the matter drop if I was told that the article needed to stay. I don't agree with you, however, that this particular user would have less weight in a deletion discussion, but I see your point. Thanks very much for your time and your help on this. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 15:57, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
@PopularOutcast:, You're doing fine; there's too many procedures to know them all. I don't think you have to have a discussion first, but talking with other editors about a proposed action is never wrong, so you can always do that, no matter what procedures might be required later. Again: you don't have to list it at WikiProjects, either; but it would be more likely to attract more eyeballs if you did. If you do list it, it's recommended that such notifications be brief, link to the discussion, and not betray your own point of view; so something like: "Your feedback about a proposed merge of Xyz to Abcd would be welcome at ABC#Proposed merger. Thanks, ~~~~". Hope this helps, Mathglot (talk) 23:26, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi Mathglot, PopularOutcast! I appreciate the head's up about this! I agree that this topic could be merged into the main article on HBUs - I was a bit worried about this when I saw that the student suggested this as a topic. And as always, I really appreciate you Mathglot for keeping an eye out! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:03, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Shalor (Wiki Ed), cool. I loved reading about it but I think it can easily be merged. I will see if more comes of the merger discussion before going ahead and doing it. Thanks for getting back to me. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 17:57, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
@PopularOutcast: Yes, you should certainly wait for consensus at the merge proposal before attempting a merge. For one thing, User:Johnbod came up with some strong arguments not to merge, and it would be good to hear from other editors as well. Mathglot (talk) 19:22, 26 December 2018 (UTC)
Mathglot, yup, that's my intention. Thanks again for your help. PopularOutcasttalk2me! 22:12, 26 December 2018 (UTC)

--Davidyang94 (talk) 00:40, 13 January 2019 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) @Davidyang94: I'm assuming you know how to find the sandbox and open the page for editing, so you're just asking about the creation of a section or subsection header, once you have the page open for editing; right? Hello.

I need help with...

I have been assigned to edit/add information to a certain pop culture article. I'm not sure if I am doing this write and definitely want to get a head start on it and some help before my assignment is due. I have found this article that I think is a good start for me to edit and I would like to add this statement to the article:

While performing songs such as “ The Edge of Glory” and “Judas” Lady Gaga wears a robot like costume, with claws as the background depicts a fiery hell.

I got this information off a website and now I'm not sure if that was an okay source to take from. I have the source cited and if it's acceptable I'll submit that as well for review.

Hi Shalor, I am trying my best here but I am not making much progress. I have gone through the tutorials and now I am supposed to edit an article. It has taken me 3 days to figure how to find an aritcle, copy and paste in the sandbox. I have made a few grammatical changes but I am unsure what to do next. I am editing relational dialectics and it looks like the section titled: Approaches to Relational Dialectic could use some work. Hello,

I need help with adding a template to my Wikipedia page. I know I have seen some pages that have boxes that typically have quick information like Birth, Death, Full Name, etc... Also when adding pictures to my page does it have to be my original work or can I just cite where I got the photo? Thank you in advance!

--Cassandraortiz (talk) 03:50, 3 February 2019 (UTC)

Cassandra Ortiz Hi! When adding images, it doesn't necessarily have to be your own work - you can definitely upload or use images that are in the public domain or under a compatible Creative Commons license. I have some information about what images are usable here and the training module on uploading images and media will cover this as well. Just make sure that the image is very explicitly marked with a copyright - if you have any questions about whether or not an image is OK, let me know.

With a template, I can add one for you - you can bring them up via the templates box though, in general, as well. Also feel free to copy one from an existing article - just make sure that you have both in edit mode. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:16, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

Need technical help on page

Hi, I've been doing work on the Sara G. Stanley page. There are a couple of minor technical difficulties happening that I can't fix. The first issue are the flags at the top of the page. I believe I have addressed the bias and weasel words, etc, so how do I remove the flags? I followed the directions, but it didn't seem to work out for me. The second issue I have is when I look up her page under my name, it says the page has been deleted, which I know it hasn't. I did notice the page under my name is in lower case, so I don't know if that has anything to do with the problem? Anyway, other than these, it's been pretty simple to work in wiki. Jherrera0804/New sandbox moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Jherrera0804/New sandbox, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. ___CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 16:56, 21 February 2019 (UTC)

Need help request from King666Field (talk)

Hi!

It seems like I cannot launch the tutorial of citing sources in the training of "Adding citations". Can you help me with that?

Thanks!

  • Hi! Can you email me at stoncray wikiedu.org with more information about your issue? Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:48, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

Can't find my list and citation

So I made a ref list and a citation last week, but I do not see it on my page. It was there when I hit the publish changes button. I cannot find it in my view history and neither can my professor. I was curious as to if you could see if I put it on another page or something by chance? I can see the day I watched the tutorial for adding citations of February 17th, 2019, but I can't find my citation or reference list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cdalfons (talkcontribs) 23:53, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

References

Hi Shalor,

I'm confused by what this means and how to fix it:

Cite error: The named reference :1 was invoked but never defined (see the help page).

Thank you,

Paddy — Preceding unsigned comment added by Paddyiranmanesh (talkcontribs) 00:57, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi! This basically means that there's a tag for a reference, but there's no actual reference there. It can sometimes happen if the source isn't in the body of the article and copied over properly. I do have some notes about your addition, but I'll post those on your talk page. Help in Reference section

Hi Shalor, The aritst I am writing about is Sonia Guitierrez and I would like some help making my Wiki page look more like how wikipedia pages looks. I am also struggling in aligning my references at the bottom with the numbers. Lastly, is it possible to get some help finding more sources and adding images.

Thank you in advance, Nancy Salto — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nancy salto (talkcontribs) 18:04, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/ Ronan.Kaiser22

Hi Shalor, I've checked only Ronan.Kaiser22, but it appears that the various users editing these CIA activities articles are students involved in an assignment that has probably not been organized by Wiki Ed - at least I can't find it. Unfortunately, policy prohibits me from disclosing the name of the institution, but could you please investigate? Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 15:58, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

My sandbox

Hey Shalor, I am not yet finished my wiki sandbox but it's coming along a lot better than I anticipated. I was wondering If you could give me some feedback on what I had added so far. I am about to touch on the Democratic party objective for the use of the term "NASCAR dad". The material is in my sandbox and not the actual page. Also, the comment section and response is very confusing for me, so if it's easier I will also give you my email cdalfons@kent.edu. However, I am fine just using the comments/ feedback page or whatever it is actually named. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cdalfons (talkcontribs) 20:00, 2 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Can do! I'll leave feedback on your user talk page! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:04, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Need help request from Alekvuozzo (talk)

Hello.

I need help with... I have done some assignments under the user page instead of the talk page of my sandbox, and when I publish my work I cannot find it anymore. I had an outline and some sources to go along with it but it is no longer accessible and I cannot find my work. Any help would be great, thanks.

Checking for Plagiarism

Dear Shalor,

If a citation for an article is a book, and I want to check for plagiarism and other issues how do I find the book they used? Would I have to go to the library and find it myself, or are there online resources I could use? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shoread0 (talkcontribs) 21:05, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Hi! You could check by using this detector, however another way of checking is to use Google. If you know which specific sentence or section they have, you can put that sentence (or sentences) in a google search. This can often bring up the exact search results. Another option is, of course, to look in the book itself. If you have it relatively handy, this may be an easier way of doing it or at least a more beneficial way, as you can also check the source to see if there's anything else that could be useful to add. (Answering here and on your user talk page as this is something that could be useful for others.) Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 21:13, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

Hello.

I need help with...

Getting back my work !!!

Thanks for cutting and pasting the work from my article selection but I don;t need that now.

I spent hours last night editing and today picked up from there. In visual mode, since the source mode was messy And was very nearly done. When I went to publish, I got an error message saying there was a conflict, that other editor had modified my article. I could not leave the page lest my work be lost. So I had to close it. ALL of the last 5 hours of work seems now gone.

Is it still somewhere ?

As for my question: each time I entered I saw 2 panels saying I was a student, then later 3 panels.

--Cre8ifs (talk) 23:06, 4 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately not - you have to save the work for it to be kept somewhere. I'm so sorry that this happened to you! Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:42, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Recover unpublished work

Hi, my browser crashed before I published my work in my Sandbox. Is there any way to recover it? Thanks! Rjgins (talk) 02:40, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Unfortunately no, Wikipedia will only save the work once it's been published. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:19, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

Moving article out of Sandbox

Hello Shalor,

I recently moved my article out of my sandbox, but when I try to look for it on google, it does not show up. Is there a reason to this?

Late Victorian Holocausts by Mike Davis

Hey there, I really appreciate the comments you lefts in my talk page. I absolutely agree with you on the fact that people don't really take the hurdle to summarize original books on politics and history, as it becomes really difficult at times to extract what the author is actually trying to say. I, myself, have been facing the exact problem of rephrasing and summarizing to only include the main points in each section of the book. I realize that looking at my draft for the first time without reading the book might confuse you about my referencing different sources for the book review. But the external references I've used were, in fact, used by Mike Davis in his own research for the book, and what I did was only paraphrase the book, citing his original sources for the readers to better understand and redirect to the original contents. I'm glad that you'd brought this up and hope this clears the confusion. All in good faith.–Ikaarin (talk) 00:41, 9 March 2019 (UTC)ikaarin

References and other

Hi Shalor, Thanks for your feedback, I have added more references but my references arent aligning properly and they arent attatching to the 'body' of my wikipedia page. I also need help adding the external links. I have them on the page but im not sure how to format them or if I did it correctly. Lastly, when I list something instead of appearing in the order it looks in paragraph form when i publish. -Nancy Salto

Heads up

I draftified this as it is incredibly promotional (in lieu of speedy tagging) and there are large swaths of text that don't have actual rs, so the student may need additional guidance. Praxidicae (talk) 14:47, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

Table Troubles

Hello! I am currently trying to edit the table found under StarKid Productions#Soundtrack albums, and am having trouble completely taking out the "Peak Chart Positions" section. I have gotten very close on User:Atampir/sandbox3, but am not sure how to complete the deletion of the last column. Any help would be appreciated! Atampir (talk) 22:44, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

@Atampir: Looks like the problem was that the "rowspan=2" part was left in the header row cells (because they had to cover the two rows in the "Peak Position Chart" you were trying to remove. Also, some extraneous code was left in from part of that second row. You can see what I removed here. Hope that helps! ···日本穣 · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 23:41, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

an article from Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/University of Michigan/Social Inequality - Winter 2018 (Winter 2018) up for deletion discussion

hi Shalor (Wiki Ed), the article Ann Arbor housing inequality is up for deletion (2nd week), here is the discussion, as the wikicontent expert for the course thought you might like to know. Coolabahapple (talk) 14:55, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Coolabahapple, Thank you for letting me know! I will sometimes work on the article, though. Shalor (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:18, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

question about formatting

Hello, I wrote about "Vera Cheves Barcellos".

What I want to ask is about "formatting problem", such as heading, subheading or something like that. In the wiki page, my content box is divided like this below. 1 Biography 2 Education 3 Artworks 3.1 Installation 3.2 Video 3.3 Recent Work 4 Organization and Influence 5 Recent Exhibitions 6 Collections 7 Honors and Awards 8 Publication 9 References 10 External Links

1. Is there any problem with this formatting? 2. Also, in 3.1 I put many artworks examples and made the texts(the titles of artworks) bold instead of making it as sub-heading 2 not to make the content box messy.

Can this be a problem in formatting?
