Guideline and policy news

• A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
• A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
• A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the delete-redirect userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target. The full proposal is at Wikipedia:Page mover/delete-redirect.
• A request for comment asks if sysops may place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions?
• There is a discussion in progress concerning automatic protection of each day's featured article with Pending Changes protection.

Technical news

• When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
• When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
• There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).

Arbitration

• By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, any gender-related dispute or controversy and associated people. Sanctions issued under GamerGate are now considered Gender and sexuality sanctions.
• The Kurds and Kurdistan case was closed, authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for the topics of Kurds and Kurdistan, broadly construed.

• Following the 2021 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: AmandaNP, Operator873, Stanglavine, Teles, and Wiki13.

Video game assessment drive

Hi SJones. Honestly, I'm not entirely sure - I dont do a ton in assessment beyond occasionally updating articles I create/work on, or tweaking blatantly wrong ones. So I'm not one to really one to know when it hits the level of needing a drive or anything. WP:VG seems to be moderately active these days with a mix of newer and older regular editors, so you could always say something and see if there's any interest. Adding/Changing Subgenres of info of songs

Why is me adding or changing genres of songs such a problem?? I see that genres are changed every so occasionally. JaydienMS (talk) 07:59, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

Is there something about my comments on your talk page that you didn't understand? Using sources to verify content additions is the foundation of the entire website. It's literally how the website works and what you're supposed to be doing when you add any content to Wikipedia. Music genre is a particularly bad area for that, where people tinker according to their own personal preferences. This should not be done, and if it happens repeatedly, will lead to a block. Sergecross73: You previously blocked Alliebk for two weeks after a series of troublesome edits. Alliebk is back at it, making problematic edits without explanation and restoring them after they have been reverted. See, for example, the edit histories on Kris Allen discography, Let It Rock (Kevin Rudolf song), Kris Allen (album), Dance with Me (Drew Seeley song), Desperate Housewives, and VH1 Top 20 Video Countdown. Yes, I have blocked them indefinitely, though I offered to unblock them if they acknowledge what they're doing wrong and promise to change. Editor who doesn't seem to get it

Hi Serge. I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do about Filmomusico. I asked them to stop removing spaces and empty parameters from album infoboxes (like this, also marking the edit as "minor"), which they said they would do here. I then discovered they had in fact asked another editor to revert my edit here, and after more of a back-and-forth just now, said they only told me they would follow said advice to get me to leave them alone. I've told them that for example, alt= is required per MOS:ACCESS, and that purely stylistic changes (like removing empty params for aesthetic reasons) shouldn't be done, but they have reverted me and called me a "sicko" for following up on this, and tried to negotiate their way out of it as if these are all my own personal "rules". (I've considered they may be a sockpuppet of a blocked editor in the area of punk music considering their adherence to making aesthetic edits seems to be pretty stubborn, but I would have no idea who of.) Not sure how to more effectively communicate this to them, and their constant attempts to negotiate their way out of following guidelines (basically "can you just look the other way?") and template layouts is getting wearisome. Filmomusico, can you help me understand the problem here? This seems like a pretty simple request by Ss112? I don't quite understand why you would continue to make edits that are, at best, making no positive change, and at worst, are detrimental. Why would you spend time doing this? To clarify: it's not just about "spaces", it's also about not removing empty parameters for no reason, including alt=, which needs to be present. Ss112 20:28, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

Venue= is fine to remove for most studio albums as it's for live albums, but as for studio= and recorded=, these should not be removed just because you can't find the data. It's fine for infoboxes to have empty parameters—Wikipedia will always be incomplete, we don't need to try to hide it. Ss112 21:04, 2 April 2021 (UTC)

I just explained why—because the data is out there, you just don't know it, therefore we should leave them in in case somebody else does and can fill them out. Serge, this user is now unnecessarily removing spaces from the heading of this very section I started (so I'm not holding my breath they'll be able to stop themselves on album articles) and keeps trying to negotiate their way out of simple requests. Yeah, just don't spend time tweaking things that has no visible change or benefit to the general, every day reader. Go out there and write some articles. One last thing @Filmomusico: I would have thought it was obvious this applies when creating articles as well. You again claimed you "got it" yet on Shape Shift (album) you have included no empty parameters in the infobox and even when there's no cover image, alt= should be present for when there is one added. Why are you insistent on going against the example at Template:Infobox album? Also, the genres are unsourced. This is against WP:V. Serge, I'm convinced this editor will never change. Not long after your ping, they added space rock as a genre because they themselves had already added it to the lead, which is like saying "I called them space rock already so they're space rock" and removed misc= even though it's useful if the band released any singles from the album. Any excuse to remove more empty parameters it seems. The band article also doesn't have any source for being space rock, so removed that from there as well. Ss112 00:13, 4 April 2021 (UTC)

Hi. As a side effect of doign research work for a rewrite of the Mistwalker article, I found a good deal of information regarding their cancelled 360 collab with Cavia Cry On. I've expanded the article, and I realise it might be worth taking it to GA, but I've never done that with a cancelled project. There are obvious unusual/awkward elements. Hi ProtoDrake. That's awesome, I always like it when people develop my creations further, and doubly so when it's an unreleased game. You're really good at doing that, so I'm sure you can handle it. I can do my normal thing of overlooking/assisting/tweaking/maintaining too. I don't think it being unreleased should be much of an obstacle - I was similarly involved with Sonic Xtreme and it wasn't an issue. Basically you just have to use commentary from "lost/cancelled game retrospectives" instead of regular contemporary reviews. Sergecross73 msg me 18:22, 10 April 2021 (UTC)

Request for input: Nintendo Switch list proposal, notability of game as a whole or only of Switch version

Hi Serge, I'm writing to request your input on Talk:List of Nintendo Switch games (A–F)#Spinoff from above Break - When we are considering "secondary coverage" for the purpose of notability checks, should this be checking for the game as a whole, or only for the Switch version of the game?. As you know, there has already been a proposal to restrict the scope of the Switch list to only "notable" games, which you are in favour of. Simply put, the question is whether "notable games" means the Switch version of the game is notable, or the game as a whole is notable. Taking the former approach will lead us to an inconsistency between games with and without own articles, which I fear may lead to articles being created purely for the purpose of list inclusion, as I explained in more detail in the subsection. I already discussed with ferret and he said we need to get the input of more voices. I have posted the subsection on 12th April but so far got no responses. I would appreciate your input. Thanks! He's tantrum-quit Wikipedia twice, claimed having multiple editing accounts here though I don't know what to make of it and he won't explain, and belligerently blanked all warnings. On the user Talk page history of my warningshere I made a list of offending diffs, and later warned against edit warring. Sergecross73 He's doing the thing he does. The wrecking of Wikipedia. His merge spamming now includes merging Walmart with itself, and merging it with the also-huge Walmart Canada. Some user said on his Talk page something about spamming a seemingly random commercial name as a redirect into OpenBSD. Constant needless destruction of all infobox columns. New Horizons edit deletions

Hello Serge and thank you for further explaining why both of my additions were deleted. I will admit that this is upsetting especially since this is for a college course grade and I am on a time crunch with when I am expected to get this done,. I of course was unaware that merely listing a game's characters was a violation and would prompt removal. This I do not agree with, but little I can do to plead my case if those are the rules. I assumed because I was just listing an untouched aspect of the game itself and the characters that are a direct part of this game-specific area, i.e. NPCs. I figured that this would not be a violation of any kind due to the fact that I am not explaining how to play the game, how to find NPCs, or even where to find them. Serge, could you please let me know if I am at all able to talk about NPCs without violating anything and having ALL of my hard work deleted so quickly? It would be nice if in the future those choosing to make these deletes would at least take into consideration that there are students, and it is clearly easy to see who's who in the area which shows article activity, to be mindful and perhaps reach out to the student and let them know more, in the way that you did for me, if that doesn't happen, students could potentially fail a class, not knowing that their stuff was deleted and why to like what happened to me. My professor reached out to me to ask if I needed help bc I haven't done any article revisions, I was very upset and wasted a ton of time, so can I please get some advice from you on what I can add with the information I already intended to add? Also, I am not any part of "masked Vandalism" I do not even understand what that means but it states that in my again deleted edit, which I would like to state that I did not know that they were deleted intentionally the first time, I thought I had done something wrong and the edits did not stick to my first attempt which is why I immediately put them back in. I am sure for those who do this stuff all day long, users like me must be annoyed, but in a nutshell, I am just trying to be part of something that I consider amazing and get an "A" in my college English class, not vandalize or purposely go against any Wikipedia standard or those who uphold them. Hey there. I apologize that they didn't explain a little more, but alas, this sort of thing happens a lot with new editors, explanations often grow briefer and briefer over time due to the repetition involved. Anyways, I'm not really sure character info is really headed anywhere for you in this article. The extent they need to be mentioned is already established in the article - mentioning things like the role of Tom Nook or Isabelle in the gameplay mechanics. Story sections generally have mentions of characters too, but with Animal Crossing not really having any narrative outside of what's already outlined, there's really nowhere to go there either. If you're dead set on writing about Animal Crossing, the Reception section is tagged for needing expansion, and I can verify that this is necessary. What's currently in the section is fine, we just need more of it. So you could check out WP:VG/S for a list of acceptable websites to use, and try to mirror what's being done there with new sources. I wouldn't worry about the passing comment about WP:VANDALISM either. An editor simply mused that because they observed some errors in your edits as well. It was just their personal take on the matter. Their comment isn't enough to get you into any sort of trouble, and I'm sure if they saw your comments here they'd probably take back what they said anyways. JugulatorJJ is repeatedly reverting without explanation

Hi Serge. Replied to you on JugulatorJJ's talk page here, but they've just reverted me another six times—three times on their talk page, and once again on Meat Loaf, Template:Meat Loaf and Meat Loaf discography (that's two reverts on each with no explanation and introducing false information). This editor's clearly being disruptive, as they've been warned by you and several other editors for this type of behaviour (since at least February this year) already but that clearly hasn't stopped them. Edits like this are plain and simply introducing false information by asserting things that aren't true. I've even my attempt to explain or talk to the editor reverted. Unfortunately, given their revert of your message, I think they're just going to continue on adding their opinions to articles and reverting without explanation because they don't have one to give. Their edits just strike me as historical revisionism and hot takes on what they think things are rather than much based in fact. Ss112 17:27, 27 April 2021 (UTC)

• Following an RfC, consensus was found that third party appeals are allowed but discouraged.
• The 2021 Desysop Policy RfC was closed with no consensus. Consensus was found in a previous RfC for a community based desysop procedure, though the procedure proposed in the 2021 RfC did not gain consensus.

Technical news

• The user group oversight will be renamed to suppress. This is for technical reasons. You can comment at T112147 if you have objections.

Arbitration

• The community consultation on the Arbitration Committee discretionary sanctions procedure was closed, and an initial draft based on feedback from the now closed consultation is expected to be released in early June to early July for community review.
