A cup of coffee for you!

I wrote a couple of wiki-themed articles which you nominated for deletion. Thanks for starting discussions around that - any outcome with conversation is positive.

Aside from that I see that you drafted User:SD0001/101 Ways to Contribute. I have seen other lists like this around somewhere, where the intent was to list out a large number of ways where a new user can do some task with minimal training and complete it in ~5 minutes. Competing commercial site WikiHow has an excellent new user interface that I think wikimedia should emulate. It churns out reviewing tasks, something like WP:Huggle, except in a user's first minutes on the site.

At Wikidata I am developing this list with others d:Wikidata:Wikidata_curricula/Activities to try to suggest a large number of engagement options.

I am saying all this to encourage you on your 101 project, which is both a good idea for others and off to a good start for your contributions.

Thanks. Regrettably no new discussion is taking place on the AfDs. Your encouragement is appreciated. I plan to expand the 101 list sometime later. The idea was inspired from one of the points noted here. SD0001 (talk) 14:25, 15 September 2018 (UTC)

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, SD0001. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi SD0001. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Minor user rights can now be accorded on a time limited or probationary period, so do check back at WP:PERM/NPR in case this concerns your application. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encylopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance. so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion.  Swarm  {talk}  01:05, 1 January 2019 (UTC)

Module:Redirect template - undid recent changes

I’m hoping I pinged you properly in my undos, but if I did not, I’m letting you know that I have undone your recent changes to Module:Redirect template since a change somewhere in the aforementioned module broke the way Template:Redirect template appears when transcluded multiple times on pages in certain circumstances. Please see Template:Redirect template/testcases#Test The Honeycombs (album) for further information. Steel1943 (talk) 21:13, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

@Steel1943: Thanks for creating those testcases. Are you sure you didn't accidentally change the substed text? Despite multiple attempts, I was unable to replicate the borked view at Template:Redirect_template/testcases#Test_1. Indeed, that is simply impossible because both {{R with history}} and {{R from album}} are wrapped in different <ul><li> ... </li></ul> containers, so it's not possible that indentation of one would be affected due to the other.
See Template:Redirect_template/testcases#Redirect_template/sandbox. The "from album" is indented correctly as I said, though there's still a problem that there are 2 bullets on the sub-bullet of R with history. This can be fixed by replacing *** in the template code. This, I think, should be done on all rcat templates that use sub-bullets, because it makes semantic sense, as well as facilitates the improvements that I made in the module - which is to replace * with <ul class="rcat rcat-name"><li>...</li></ul>, which makes the markup structured, allowing for bots and scripts to identify the rcat templates from the HTML markup of the page. This would be used in improving the functionality within Twinkle to add and remove rcat templates. (I have already implemented this for articles). SD0001 (talk) 04:24, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
  • @SD0001: In all honesty, I have no guarantee that the syntax I put on the test cases are the same as what was actually there. Since substituting the template returns the module only displaying "This is a redirect.", I had to manipulate what I saw the best I could. However, I did also notice the oddity with the double ** bullets: If you believe that you have found the fix with the indention of subsequent transclusions of {{Redirect template}} after versions with lines containing asterisks (**), and the only additional fix necessary is to change ** to * in the second line ... of all templates that have multiple lines ({{R with history}} is obviously only one of many such templates), sounds like a plan. (Pinging Paine Ellsworth in the event they by some chance have a list of Rcat templates with multiple lines that utilize double bullets in the second line, or if they can provide any further input.) Steel1943 (talk) 04:33, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
Wow, SD0001, I just realized that this is your user talk page. (Totally pinged you for no reason then.) We should probably continue this conversation on Template talk:Redirect template for further input. Steel1943 (talk) 04:40, 3 January 2019 (UTC)

Template previews

I stumbled across your application for the template editor hat. It is possible for those of us without it to preview templates, though it's a pain. Details are in mw:Extension:TemplateSandbox#Usage. (Ignore the Installation and Configuration sections; they were done when setting up Wikipedia.) I requested a better way, but I don't think anything will be happening. Hope that helps, Certes (talk) 15:49, 4 January 2019 (UTC)

@Certes: Ah yes, I did stumble upon Special:TemplateSandbox while composing the application for TE bit. But its pathetic - needing you to save the page, and then clicking another button to get the preview, and going back to the edit mode if you want to test more ... Use User:Jackmcbarn/advancedtemplatesandbox.js which works much better. It lets you preview the sandbox as if it is the main template (just fill in the main template name in the "Template name" field). Or you can use my fork of it at User:SD0001/sandbox4.js, which does the additional task of prefilling the "Template name" to the main template's name, whenever you are on a sandbox page. SD0001 (talk) 20:08, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, that script looks very useful and I've installed your version. It really should be standard or at least more widely advertised: unlike my Meta proposal, I can't see a downside to it. I must admit that I've abandoned several edits due to the hassle of using TemplateSandbox. Certes (talk) 00:34, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

OviLex

Hi. This topic is to resolve and remove the deletion nomination tag on the OviLex article. I have read the Wikipedia required criteria for new company articles, and the references have been checked. They appear to be legitimate, and that the article is acceptable to Wikipedia standards.

Please make your arguments at the AfD discussion. SD0001 (talk) 20:38, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Ok, another user left a message, but usually the talk page is better optimized for discussion.

Hello SD0001,

Discussions of interest
  • Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
  • {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
  • A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
  • There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
Reminders
  • NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
NPP Tools Report
  • Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
  • copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
  • The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Google eBooks logo.png

Thank you for uploading File:Google eBooks logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

This bot DID NOT nominate any file(s) for deletion; please refer to the page history of each individual file for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 01:00, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

I took one of your closes to DRV. I'd prefer you unclose it. You would have done better to vote on the page then do a 3/3 Keep close. Thanks. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2019_April_5 Legacypac (talk) 01:57, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi SD0001. I wanted to leave this note to inform you that I have overturned your closure of Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Portal:Friends (2nd nomination) per consensus at Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2019 April 5 that determined that it was a WP:BADNAC. Specifically, A non-admin closure is not appropriate when the outcome is a close call (especially where there are several valid outcomes) or likely to be controversial. Such closes are better left to an administrator. Please ping me if you have any questions about this! Thanks, -- Tavix (talk) 19:35, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.18

Hello SD0001,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:

  • Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
  • Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
Reliable Sources for NPP

Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.

Backlog drive coming soon

Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

Yet another THANK YOU

I consider the volunteer techs who contribute to the project as you do one of our most valuable resources, if not THE most. Again, THANK YOU  . I was wondering if there is anything you can do to help resolve the word search issue involving hatted discussions? The way it works now, a metadata search (I think that's the correct term) is useless when trying to find/search for something in hatted/collapsed discussions, especially if they're archived in that state. Example: If I go to an article TP, and use the find/search tool for a particular word or phrase on that page, it cannot find it if the discussion is hatted. The hats have to be uncollapsed first. I would think the same applies when using the search feature for archives. Is there a work around besides manually having to open each collapsed discussion on pages you think it may be archived? Atsme Talk 📧 12:45, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

Thank you for the appreciation.
Does User:SD0001/AllCollapseToggle.js meet your requirements (you can experiment it on User:SD0001/sandbox)? Using Special:Search does find text within hatted discussions (I just tested) though getting the results can often get tricky because MediaWiki search is not great. SD0001 (talk) 17:13, 21 June 2019 (UTC)
Handy little tool, thank you! But here is the problem I've been encountering: just used the search tool for my archives (in the little box near the top of my UTP) and what I was searching for did not show up in the results:
  • Search string: Like, it's April Fools' Day
  • The following showed up in the search results (but not what I was searching for which is the only collapsed discussion in that archive) -

User talk:Atsme/Archive 30 (section The mobile version is absurdly dysfunctional and horrible and it's bugging me so) 📧 20:14, 1 April 2019 (UTC) Some might say it's an April Fools joke, but...its really me! And...I did shave!--MONGO (talk) 22:32, 1 April 2019 (UTC) Is 73 KB (7,918 words) - 21:27, April 30, 2019

Search found that single comment, but not the comment that was hatted. Atsme Talk 📧 22:10, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

MediaWiki search is way too weird. I don't have an explanation. But I do note that making it an exact-string search by surrounding the search string in quotes like: "Like, it's April Fools' Day" prefix:"User talk:Atsme" does find the hatted stuff. SD0001 (talk) 06:16, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
Hmmm...so if a particular discussion is hatted and archived on an article TP, and someone is searching for diffs, MediaWiki search will not find the statement if using a single word in quotations (I just tried that using "April") - a complete string is required - which begs the question, is there a string word minimum before the algorithm will check a hatted discussion, and will it only check the first line in the hatted discussion? I wonder, could the "if then else" statement be modified to include something along the line of "if collapsed then uncollapse" or somehow include collapsed archived discussions in the sequence? I appreciate you taking the time to help me with this - it's way more than anyone should have to do as a volunteer - but if you can just let me know if it's a doable request for WP's tech wish list, I'll present it. Such a request would probably be taken more seriously if presented intelligibly, and that's why I was hoping you could advise if it's something that actually can be achieved, and if so, how best to present it. Atsme Talk 📧 14:57, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
MediaWiki search will not find the statement if using a single word in quotations (I just tried that using "April") I don't think so, search for "April" prefix:"User talk:Atsme" does give User talk:Atsme/Archive 30. (But the text you have in mind isn't showing in bold because, well, April occurs 47 times on the page and search can only show a small snippet.) Try "keepin" prefix:"User talk:Atsme/Archive 30" which does find the word keepin, which occurs just once on the page within the hatting. This also shows that it isn't just first line in the hatting that's searched.
Also, in case you're not aware, there is the very useful insource:"text" thing which will search the page's wikitext, thus finding everything, collapsed or not or whatever.
You can read about the technicalities of search at mw:Help:CirriusSearch. The section on full-text search is particularly interesting. SD0001 (talk) 17:01, 22 June 2019 (UTC)
I was not aware - just skimmed over it and it appears to be the answer for anything and everything that is searchable. Thank you for providing the link. I was using the Search box that is on my archive (on UTP) which I thought already limited the search to prefix:"User talk:Atsme" without having to add it. From what I'm understanding about the Cirrus Search, one does have to add the prefix but there are also multiple other options. I'll just have to invest some time experimenting with it. The main search engine will scour all of WP using the Search Wikipedia box in our top menu bar. Better yet, what I didn't know prior to our discussion is that leaving the search box blank and clicking on the 🔍, you can set parameters for a more focused search. That is really good to know!! Thank you!! Atsme Talk 📧 17:44, 22 June 2019 (UTC)

Rollback

How did you do this?? –MJLTalk 18:56, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

I was at Special:ApiSandbox when I noticed that the API:Edit had a tags option, with a dropdown showing several tags (but not all I think) including rollback. The test edit worked even though I am not a rollbacker. Though its worth noting that actual rollbacks are tagged as "Rollback" (caps) and this tag isn't available in the dropdown. SD0001 (talk) 19:11, 25 June 2019 (UTC)

draft-sort-burst

Hi, regarding User:SD0001/draft-sort-burst.js - please alter the line

newText += "{{" + element + "|importance=|class=draft}}\n";

to

newText += "{{" + element + "}}\n";

First, not all WikiProjects have an importance rating; and whilst most have a class rating, not all allow draft-class. Second, when a WikiProject banner is used outside Talk: space (such as in Draft talk: space), both importance and class are automatically detected, and so there is no need to set either one. If |class=draft is explicitly set, then when the draft is finally moved to mainspace as an article, the |class=draft will need to be altered - but if it was not explicitly set, then when the draft is finally moved to mainspace as an article, it will automatically become Unassessed, without futher action being needed.

Also, please incorporate some sort of test that the desired project banner template actually exists, in order to prevent redlinks such as this. Thanks. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 10:22, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

Redrose64, Thanks for the note here. I've incorporated the changes you suggested. Regarding the addition of WikiProject Music, sorry, thanks for reverting. It came from User:Enterprisey/ibx-wproj-map.js, which seems to designed mainly for toollabs:apersonbot/pending-subs rather than for the draft-sorter script. I've now chosen to keep my own list of projects templates at User:SD0001/wikiproject-list.js. SD0001 (talk) 14:25, 28 June 2019 (UTC)

WP:CEN is now open!

To all interested parties: Now that it has a proper shortcut, the current events noticeboard has now officially opened for discussion!

WP:CEN came about as an idea I explored through a request for comment that closed last March. Recent research has re-opened the debate on Wikipedia's role in a changing faster-paced internet. Questions of WP:NOTNEWS and WP:Recentism are still floating around. That being said, there are still plenty of articles to write and hopefully this noticeboard can positively contribute to that critical process.

Thank you for your participation in the RFC, and I hope to see you at WP:CEN soon! –MJLTalk 19:10, 29 June 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019

Hello SD0001,

WMF at work on NPP Improvements

More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.

QUALITY of REVIEWING

Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.

Backlog

The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.

Move to draft

NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.

Notifying users

Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.

PERM

Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.

Other news

School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.

Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.

  • valereee That's a purely optional step. Apologies for the confusion. The DYK link appears in the "More" dropdown (in vector skin). If you wish, you can change its location to any of the following places: (copied from Help:customizing toolbars)
    • p-navigation: Navigation section in left sidebar
    • p-interaction: Interaction section in left sidebar
    • p-tb: Toolbox section in left sidebar
    • coll-print_export: Print/export section in left sidebar
    • p-personal Personal toolbar at the top of the page
    • p-views Upper right tabs in Vector only (read, edit, history, watch, etc.)
    • p-cactions Drop-down menu containing move, etc. (in Vector); subject/talk links and action links in other skins <<< DEFAULT

Lol :) SD0001 (talk) 16:45, 17 June 2019 (UTC)
  • UGH! I just used your script but forgot to include the image, and now I don't know how to insert it without breaking something. Can you help? Also maybe you'd like to check how it worked. Here's the code I think needs to be inserted: {{main page image|image=WarmingStripes.png|caption=Warming stripes for the [[Azores]]|width=133x150}} --valereee (talk) 11:02, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
    • @Valereee: done. The script simply feeds stuff into {{subst:NewDYKnomination}}, which just takes the img name and caption, and when substed the template expands everything into pretty ugly wikicode. SD0001 (talk) 12:32, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks so much! And sorry for not even providing you with the courtesy of a convenience link, not enough coffee yet. So was that the first time anyone used it? Seems like it did everything it was supposed to, given pilot error on the image insertion. --valereee (talk) 12:45, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
Valereee, going by the page history of T:DYKT, this was the 7th usage of the script! BTW Congrats on your soon-to-be-attained admin hat! SD0001 (talk) 12:52, 3 July 2019 (UTC)
No kidding! I have to go check out who else is using it! Thanks, not counting my chickens quite yet lol! --valereee (talk) 13:01, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Why did you move Template:SixFlags-stub?

99721829Max (talk) 02:20, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

@99721829Max: The name {{Six-Flags-stub}} would indicate that it is a sub type of {{flags-stub}} or {{flag-stub}}, which it isn't. See WP:WSS/NC. SD0001 (talk) 04:46, 23 July 2019 (UTC)

RFUD-Helper

First of all, great job! Looks and works really well so far (only had one request to test it on). Speaking of said request, I chose to restore the page and userfy it which worked as expected but when moving the page, a redirect was created. Maybe the script can suppress this (optionally)? Also, it would probably be useful if the {{tlx|UND} template was appended with a sentence denoting where the page was moved to. Regards SoWhy 11:50, 28 August 2019 (UTC)

@SoWhy: Done. Done. SD0001 (talk) 14:04, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
Hello! I've also just performed my first 'accept' using the script and it's looking good, thank you. Is the undeletion summary configurable in Common.js? --kingboyk (talk) 17:15, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
@Kingboyk: No, but you can change it on every undeletion. I am not sure if there's any use in having an option to configure the default text ("Undelete per request at WP:RFUD") as well. SD0001 (talk) 19:19, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
In that case, would you consider changing the link to WP:REFUND? It's only a couple of letters more and is more descriptive. --kingboyk (talk) 19:21, 28 August 2019 (UTC)
I just made the "request" word a permalink to the actual request, so adding a common.js option is no longer possible. I think RFUD vs REFUND is just a matter of taste and neither is really more informative. SD0001 (talk) 05:16, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
The permalink is a great idea. Thanks. --kingboyk (talk) 13:28, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Fixed I was not familiar with image deletion tags. Now all di-* templates will be removed. Do let me know if there are any more templates that ought to be removed. SD0001 (talk) 13:05, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
  • Also, could the script be made to work similar to Twinkle and offer the option just to reply but not to restore? Sometimes a manual restore is needed but it would still be cool if the reply could be automated. Kinda like Twinkle's CSD module that allows admins to just tag an article instead of deleting it or the PP module that allows just adding tags to the article instead of protecting it. Regards SoWhy 09:03, 29 August 2019 (UTC)
Yes, I will work on it. But instead of specifically providing such an option, it would be easier to just make the script not throw an error if the page in question already exists, and rather continue with the auxiliary tasks (removing deletion tag, adding response, moving in case of userfication etc). New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello SD0001,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Sarah Thomas (marathon swimmer)

Hallo, I chose the article title carefully after seeing another swimmer on the Sarah Thomas dab page, so I have reverted your page move. I had intended to make a redirect from "... (swimmer)" to the disambiguation page but unfortunately hadn't got round to it: have now retargetted the redirect from the reverted page move. Thanks for your interest in the article. PamD 20:35, 16 September 2019 (UTC)

PamD, I looked at the dab page and did miss the swimmer there! Thoughts on naming this article Sarah Thomas (swimmer) and adding the {{about}} hatnote?
I think this is a better way of handling the situation rather than using an verbose/over-disambiguated title. SD0001 (talk) 07:15, 17 September 2019 (UTC)
I wondered about that, especially after you'd made your move, but decided that as you hadn't updated incoming link from Thomas (surname), and I'd linked her from WiR page etc, I wasn't going to do so with all the necessary tidying up. If I'd been the one adding the other swimmer to the dab page I'd have made her (the GB one) a redirect from "... (swimmer)" in the first place, rather than adding a plain text entry to the dab page. But I don't feel very strongly. Just pleased to have got an article on her, as she's all over the news today having succeeded. (Not sure about the massive amount of records added by an IP, which is lifted directly from a non-RS wiki!). And have now linked her from List of successful English Channel swimmers. Please help

Hi greetings, thank you for creating new user scripts. You may know about Birthday committee. We add greeting templates in users' talk pages in their Birthday, Adminship anniversary, etc. If there is a user script the task will be easier. I am humbly requesting you to create a new user script to help users in WP:BDC. Hope that you'll help.
Specifications of tool in my mind.

  • A tool can add different templates in WP:BDC for Birthday, first edit day, etc.
  • The templates can be added like adding templates when welcoming new users in twinkle.
  • The templates are sorted in different sections mentioned in BDC (i.e. Birthday, Adminship anniversary, etc)

If you create this tool it will be a great help. I shall be highly honored, if you can consider this request.
Thank you.----PATH SLOPU 16:35, 13 October 2019 (UTC)

Will put it on my to-do list. I was initially thinking that this was already possible to do via custom templates in Twinkle's welcome menu or warn menu. But it looks like there are a few issues with that -- such as when doing it via the welcome menu, edit summary can't be customised from "Welcome to Wikipedia" and the warn menu will automatically add a "October 2019" header. SD0001 (talk) 20:15, 13 October 2019 (UTC)
@Path slopu:   Done See User:SD0001/BDCS. This is a quick rip-off of the code from Twinkle's welcome module, put together in <1 hour. Feel free to suggest any improvements, though I may not be able to get to them as fast :) SD0001 (talk) 08:16, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
Thank you very much for spending time for my request and create a new user script. Your script is very helpful. It works very well. I have some suggestions.
  • Please change Happy Anniversary to Happy Adminship Anniversary.
  • It will be a help, if we can access the tool from userpage like user talk page.

Regards.--PATH SLOPU 13:15, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Done. Support for any custom templates is also added. SD0001 (talk) 14:11, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello SD0001,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 816 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:17, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

editToken

Hello SD0001,

Your scripts User:SD0001/sandbox.js and User:SD0001/DiscussionCloser.js are no longer functional because they attempt to get an editToken from mw.user.tokens. The scripts should instead get a csrfToken. editTokens were removed from mw.user.tokens on October 3, 2019 at Phabricator during this edit as they were redundant to csrfTokens.BrandonXLF (talk) 00:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

RFUD helper issue

Thanks for the RFUD helper script. I do want to bring an item in it to your attention, though. When you decline a request and choose "article deleted per CSD criteria", the only option that comes up in the box above "comments" is "deleting admin", which sometimes autofills. It doesn't link to the admin's userpage, though, it links to the CSD page. I've been trying to put the CSD criteria in that box instead of the admin's name. – Muboshgu (talk) 15:44, 22 November 2019 (UTC)

@Epicgenius and Muboshgu: There were some breaking changes in a library that was being used, because of which some malfunctions occurred in the DYK-helper and RFUD-helper scripts. New Page Review newsletter December 2019

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.
