Bridgwater Castle House

Hi Rod, thanks very much for making a start on the inclusion of this landmark within the Bridgwater article. I may well have a photo (will have to check at home), although the building is currently strapped up with webbing to slow its deterioration. Burtle

Hi Rodw, Have you just dug me out of a hole I think I unwittingly created. I have been a user for some time but today signed in to make my first contribution about the phrase "drawing a line in the sand" Having done that I looked at Burtle because I have just spent a year refurbishing the village hall as my present to the village and wondered if the reference cotained a link to the village website because it is quite interesting. www.burtlevillage.co.uk. I noticed some instant factual errors and tried to change them but in doing so I seemed to totally mess up the page layout, but have you just mended it for me in which case thanks. Chew Stoke

Hi Rodw, I hope all is well. I navigated through to a discussion at User_talk:Uksignpix, and wondered, perhaps File:Chewstoke.gif could/should be redrawn as an SVG image by someone at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab/Image workshop‎? I got File:Shaw and Crompton Emblem.svg redrawn there, and there are some very talented graphicists who can work magic on coats of arms (like File:Merseyside CoA.svg and File:Royal Badge of Wales new.svg). My only prose comment would be that, at six paragraphs, the lead is longer than would usually be expected. Can it be trimmed, or a couple of the shorter paragraphs combined? Montacute

Rod I've never heard of a local oral tradition in Montacute or Ham Hill of Charles II passing through the village, and to be honest I'd never even heard of the "Monarch's Way" until you mentioned it. I see the wiki entry mentions Montacute, but I really doubt the authenticity of that. Assuming he did pass close by, he would have followed the London-Exeter coach road which bypassed to the south of Montacute village running from Yeovil-Odcombe-Batemore Barn-Ham Hill-Stoke sub Hamdon along another roman road. If he did enter the village he would have left via Hollow Lane, another Roman holloway leading to Ham Hill from Townsend and still in use as a road. I'm dubious about the whole thing though as reading the article "Escape of Charles II" I find repeat references to "Colonel Phillips of Montacute ". The family name was Phelips, not Phillips which makes me wonder if there is a misidentification When I go back I'll check if any long distance paths go through near the village, but the only one I know of is the Leland Trail, which reaches Ham Hill

Second thoughts on the path, as the online OS maps clearly show a long distance path through the village, passing in front of the gatehouse, so looks like you are right. The path appears to come across Montacute Park down the old Roman Road from Ilchester, though the village, past the gatehouse and over the top of St Michaels Hill (in so doing taking a detour from the old track). I still feel that if he did pass through the village it would have been unlikely to be that route, but I guess we'll never knowOlddemdike (talk) 00:23, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

Can you please remove the reference to the UN? It is incorrect. The mandation is to do with the IMO nothing to do with the UN. I removed the AVCS bit as it's mentioned in the main body of the article. Perhaps you could like to join the two together? Dashes, hyphens and whatnot

Indeed, it does seem to be a subject on which passions are aroused for no apparent reason! It toook me some time to figure out the difference between the various possibilities and decide on a preference, but after a while it becomes natural. It would be nice to have em- and en-dashes on the keyboard though. Incidentally, by bizarre coincidence, I'm paying my first ever visit to South Somerset next month (not for Wikipedia-related reasons though!). Your sandbox - City of Bath Technical school revised article

Hi Rod, You might as well replace the article with what you have created .. because if you don`t somebody else will at some time. At leaset it will exist in some eventual form. What is important is that something remains to mark it`s passing in the histroy of Bath, and it may give to the reader an understanding of the contribution that many of it`s pupils made to the Technological and Scientific world in which we live today. Despite the lack of facilities, it offered what a lot of modern schools do not, motivation for young people to succeed with limited resources (Common just after WW2). I was going to include notable Alumni, but I fear that they along with the other old boys will have no relevance to the article. Like all history, or any record of it, it is created by living people, and cannot not just exist just as a collection of verifiable oices of paper as required by reference work. A classic case is the publication of The Last Tommy, (Harry Patch R.I.P., a local Combe Down lad) original research is contained in the form of his own experiences. How long will it be before this is cited as verifiable information from the past? I have no way of contacting Jefferies Malcolm (born 1936), his research which much of own history records of the School are based on, inspired by his original published article held at Somerset Records office in Taunton. This article was was paased on to our group in 2003. We have tried to expand upon it, are searching for the references that he used in his original article for inclusion into our own material submitted to Wiki. (additional information)The reference (2) that applies to 1 Stuart Place Bath (Govenors House) is not the Goal referred to in our article. The Goal is behind it, we have the (original own work) of it`s current structure (which reflects it`s original), whether it`s relevant to the article as a refernce is what I referred to earlier, it`s not a deliberate attempt to rewrite history, but it`s use as a visual reference will be misleading for researchers. The citations you highlight for further verifification may well soon be uncovered by us from the historical records of Kellys directory for Somerset etc. So, thank you once again for your sterling work, and as to the matter of contributing to your project about Somerset I will decline the offer until I have gained a lot more experience about Wikipedia and it`s structure. Hi Rod, Yet another area of Wiki I had not considered to be critical, I was not aware that "my talk" was a permanent record for other users to browse. I have no intention of editing anyone elses user page, only my own contributions to it. I just assumed incorrectly, that "My Talk" was a personal storage place for communications, and for me to be able to keep the relevant condensed information sent to me to aid my understanding of Wiki. If it possible for me to re-edit it to it`s original state I will do this immediately, It would appear that I have made the right decision for the moment to make no further contributions until my knowledge of Wikipedia has improved somewhat. My endeavours and method of use appear to be counter productive and time consuming for others such as yourself to have to deal with. City of Bath Technical School - unassessed article

Expanding the User base on Wiki

Hi Rod, I know you`re very busy, but I don`t quite know where to post this suggestion (maybe someone does, sensibly of course !). I have been adding my own REMs to my User:Francis E Williams/Sandbox and in doing so I noticed that one of the Wiki forums commented "how do we obtain a more diversified user base?". How about an article that can be linked to new users to replace the current links to "your first article" etc. My own experience as a new user was one of "information overload". Having persisted, (a goal to achieve, i.e. post my old school history), with the system over the last 10 days has brought me to this conclusion:- If it can be made simpler for inexperienced users to "get on the publishing ladder", then maybe the requirement for a "broader user base" could be met by the preparation of such an article. I don`t suggest that this "dumbed down" version of introduction would be suitable for the more "academic" user, but it could be included as a "skip over article" for them. Hi Rod, well REM is short for reminder as used in computer programming. Did quite a bit in the mid 80`s. Means something to me ( and programmers) but not grapsed easily by the average user of a computer. So, my point exactly, points of reference etc. Thanks for the short cut about a suitable location for the suggestion. Yes, old but still able to learn on here (despite suffering from Macular Degeneration (pixel loss in both eyes)) that makes it so slow and time consuming sometimes to see both what is on the screen and where my characters are on the keyboard. Transport in Somerset

Hi Rod, the template was an accident of creation, I used {{Transport}} by mistake in category and up popped this template. I modified it as an experiment, and it just grabbed the code for the content box and the two combined. I just liked the effect and left it. It cannot be hidden (as most content templates can, a problem in itself) but I thought it was handy for the younger reader to have accesss to other content in one place. Well, I didn`t want to go live with the page, as it was only a suggestion and for something to do. Transport in Somerset

Hi Rod, I understand where you are coming from, but articles like "Transport in Manchester" emphasise more the current modern system than the historical base requirement, perhaps an equal measure of both?. It is simple to link into, and use extracts from the work already done by others. "Copy and paste" can be a very rapid method to use. I just thought to get the ball rolling my suggestion might be a basis for others to get involved with their own area of expertise, and in doing so would add to the kind of effort that will be required to make the article stand out from the rest. Maybe the current article can be renamed to Historic transport in Somerset or something along those lines, if you want I could then create Articles similar to Transport in Bristol, mainly focusing on current Transport, it would be a good idea as Bristol International Airport for example comes under both Bristol and Somerset. Hi Rod, yes Geography not a brilliant subject at school. I Will have to check up on the current area enclosed by somerset (and its sub districts) as a county. I just assumed being just along the coast from Porlock and all that. It would have been a super inclusion for its novelty value at least, ah well, good job it`s only hyper space and not paper eh?. Grade I listed buildings in Bath and North East Somerset

I've moved a few commas around in the first half of the lead, but I think that the second half, beginning "Bath Abbey was a Norman church built on earlier foundations ..." seems just to be tagged on at the end. Is that the earliest of the listed buildings? If so that's got to be the hook. Right now from that point on the lead looks like a random selection of buildings with no coherent narrative tying everything together. --Malleus Fatuorum 23:14, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Not sure if you've noticed, but alt text is now part of the FL criteria ("images... with succinct captions and alternative (alt) text if necessary"). It can be added by adding "|alt=Description of the image" to the image code. I don't think there's any alt text in the BANES list, but if this is intentional you'll need to explain to reviewers why you don't think it's necessary. Forget I spoke, I pressed the wrong edit button and was searching for alt text in the lead (I didn't realise the images were at the bottom of the article). Nev1 (talk) 13:29, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi Rod. I've started a GA review of Buildings and architecture of Bath. I grabbed it because the article looked great, and it's a topic that interests me. However when reading through I picked up a series of niggles which started to accumulate. Have a look at my comments and let me know what you think. I see you're an experienced and energetic article writer so you may feel the issues are quick and easy to deal with. I hope you don't mind my replying to your request here, rather than on the review page. My thoughts are rather random, and I hope some of them will be of use to you, but I'm not keen to get involved any controversies with those experienced and knowledgeable editors "out there". I must first confess a particular interest in the subject as my parents met and were married in Bath (Walcot Church), and just after the war I used to spend a month or so of the summer holidays there with my mother, visiting my grandmother who lived there; many strong memories, especially of the gaps left in terraces by the bombing. You have taken on a massive challenge in tackling this article, which IMO is a very important addition to WP. So on to some comments.

My first impressions were rather like those of the reviewer - this looks excellent; but on closer inspection does perhaps need some attention. Some of my comments are general, some are more specific, even pedantic, and some may be straying into the FA rather than GA territory. The article is long and detailed, and I wonder if all the material is needed. From the title I expected information about the existing buildings and architecture. There is quite a lot of (excellent) material on history but some of it is about buildings that no longer exist; is this relevant, or a distraction? I think this led to the reviewer's comment on the Roman material. Do you need to mention the archaeology; is it relevant? Perhaps after a brief introduction, you could say that the only remaining Roman material is in the baths, and describe that. As there is nothing remaining of the Post-Roman and Saxon period, why not just say so? How about combining the first two sections and describing just what IS there, with a minimum of historical information to give some context?

The Georgian section is long, and necessarily so. But could it be broken up into sub-sections? Not sure how you could do that, but it would give some pause for breath for the reader. I have no issue with the images; IMO they nicely break up the text. The panorama is spectacular. I don't suppose there is a free-use aerial image of the Circus and Royal Crescent area (or an old engraving as it were from above) to give some idea of the lay-out of the area.

I recommend that wherever possible you get rid of short (1–3 sentence) paragraphs; I think this is the preferred style, and it certainly looks better. With nearly 150 references you might think I would be happy with the number of citations. But there are a number of statements without citations. Personally my policy is "if you can't cite it, don't say it"; and this means certainly a citation at the end of every paragraph.

Also in respect to references, you include books, but not the pages containing the information to which you refer; this can be a major problem (the book says it, but how can I verify it?). Could I suggest that you place all the books in a separate Bibliography subsection of References? Then in the text give a reference which includes the page number - I use the {{Harvnb|Name|Year|p=.}} template which seems to work well. You can see how it works in, say, the Chester Cathedral article.

A minor comment - do we NEED to know that Walter Scott lived there? Lots of notable people lived in Bath at one time or another; you can't include them all - even the major ones. And is that relevant to the architecture? Jane Austen is an exception in the context used (but needs a citation).

Proposal to raise FT criteria to requiring 50% featured

We have a healthy fanbase of a few hundred people and i want to promote the club. i've searhed on here and there is football team of the same standard as ours on here so i feel we should be able to have a page. The only way things get better is if people find out about them... wikipedia is a where people find out things so i want my club to be on here. Geography of Somerset

Hello Rod, long time no speak. Thank you for correcting my supposition that the article was no longer required. When the page I posted earlier this evening was blanked with just a redirect sign at the top, (I was a bit surprised to say the least, as no comment was plcced on the talk page or the article to say this was to occur.) I followed it to the Soimerset main Article. My content on Geography had already been incorporated (in parts). A somewhat confusing experience followed. The Leland Trail

Course

The Leland Trail, a 28 mile ( 45 kilometer) footpath in Somerset, exists between Alfred's Tower in Penelwood [ST745352] to Ham Hill Country Park [ST478172].

Creation

The path was established by creating rights of way via tracks and lanes. It is named after John Leland who visited South Somerset during the years 1535 - 1543. In his role as royal librarian, his journeys and tasks during that period were mapped out for him by King Henry VIII. His job was to reveal to the King all reference to "antiquities" and possesions of the local churches and priories. The exact route taken by John Leland over much of South Somerset may nver be known but what has remained of the records of the time now form the basis of the trail.

Sections

Typical all day walks (as detailed below) will allow the track to be traversed in manageable stages. Traditionally it is broken down into seven smaller parts, more details of these may be found online together with local accomodation, transport links and places to eat.

Day one:- The early morning walk from Penselwood to Bruton, is fairly easy going for 5 miles (allow 3 hours). Then the journey onward to Castle Cary will take a little over 2 hours to cover the next 4 miles. For the more adventerous, (and early summer-time walker), the next stage to North Cadbury will add about another 2 hours to the journey. Queen Camel will probably be the final section for the day, and will involve another 4 miles walking in just over 2 hours.

Day two:- The intrepid may wish to continue the rest of the trail the following day. Leaving Queen Camel for Ilchester will cover mainly level ground in about 2 hours (at an average walking pace) for a distance of 5 miles. Montacute is the next "port of call" enroute, the slightly more difficult terrain will need well over two hours to complete the next 4 miles. Ham Hill, (the end of the trail) will be easily reached within the hour.

Places of Interest

The unusual forest of Penselwood. Bruton has its packhorse bridge, dovecote and famous twin-towered church. Near Castle Cary is Cadbury Castle whose summit offers a spectacular panorama of the South Somerset countryside. The busy military airfield at Yeovilton. At Ham Hill Country Park you can view Exmoor, the Quantocks, and the Bristol Channel. looking east is the trails starting point, Alfred's Tower.

Other Trails

The Leland Trail links with the Liberty Trail and the River Parrett Trail at Ham Hill.
