Prompt dablinks

Hi! I hugely appreciate the work you do with dablinks. You've fixed such a tremendous number of them, it's almost beyond belief. I thank you for that.

But, I've been wondering if there's any way to skip dablinks introduced in very recent edits. I would often see a non-constructive edit by a new user who in the process manages to also introduce a dablink (like here), and then a few hours later, before anyone has managed to revert the edit, you would come and fix that dablink. Most editors' watchlists are set up to only display the latest edit to a given page, so they will notice your edit, but not the preceding one by the disruptive user. This means that such disruptive edits may not be spotted promptly, or at all. I don't know what system you use, but if there's a way to filter out recently introduced dablinks, that will be really great. – Uanfala (talk) 23:45, 22 December 2021 (UTC)

The various tools and lists are at Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links and several of these are updated every 12 hours (to catch the 500+ created each day), but I don't know of any way to filter out new edits. If I spot "non-constructive" edits I will revert them (perhaps a dozen or so every day) but unless a specialist in the subject matter of the article & when only looking at a section of the article it is not always obvious. You could put a note at Wikipedia talk:Disambiguation with a suggestion for how this could be improved.— Rod ^talk 08:24, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

Explorers of old would marvel at the fact that in the year of our Lord, 2022, the world is fully mapped out, and had been for decades. Yet, as many take to their computers to be aided in their search for knowledge, they find that not all is easily accessible. Hi there. Thanks also for checking up on this stuff. So I sort of figured out where in Costa Rica "Río Hondo near Santa Clara" are... Río Hondo may be a tiny creek most notable for being a place along Highway 34 where there are traffic jams, but that's about 15km from Santa Clara. It's such a prosaic name ('deep river'), it likely means nothing.

Santa Clara was actually called 'Llanuras de Santa Clara' in the handwritten notes accompanying the physical specimens, it is in the south of Roxana, Pococí. Bizarrely there is a wikipedia page in the Cebuano language about it. I'm guessing it was maybe a (deforested) finca (cattle ranch) 120 years ago? Now it appears to be a peri-urban neighbourhood/agricultural fields. From space, it looks like they are growing a nice crop of manioc here now. Río Hondo then is probably what is now Río Santa Clara.

So advice - what should I do? Add stuff to the disambiguation page? Remove the link syntax? Redirect 'Santa Clara' to Roxana? I like the last option the best, be nice if townsfolk could recognise their heritage and stuff. 2A02:A45D:25BD:1:44DF:A035:2396:900B (talk) 21:15, 27 January 2022 (UTC)

Hi Rod; hmmm, so... throwing the ball back in my court. So another idea: I think I will remove the links, and add a note in the text explaining where it is. If one were to go to the Roxana wiki page, click on the map, zoom in a few times, then it will pop up. I beleive your update in Otelo text is not correct. The documents were sized at FUP (Força de Unidade Popular) headquarters, Lisbon. FUP was a legal political party belonging to "Componente Politico Legal". Forças Populares 25 de Abril were the ECA "Estrutura Civil Armada" which is equivalent to the terrorist group. As a clandestine organization, they had no physical headquarters or branches. Using an analogy, FUP was equivalent to Sinn Fein and Forças Populares 25 de Abril/FP-25 to IRA. As so, I will try to revert acordingly, including the reference regarding the reference to the sized documents. Posse on Broadway - Sir-Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle rapper

Thank you for reviewing recent edits to the Posse on Broadway song page. One important detail -- Sir Mix-A-Lot is a Seattle based rapper, and the song is a tribute to his local scene, rather than Tempe, Arizona, as your edit suggests. The street "Broadway" is a common one, and was chosen in part, to appeal to radio audiences nationwide, as most major cities have a street of that name. For background check the citations as well as the Sir Mix-A-Lot main page.

But I have a favor to ask - when you edit disambiguation pages, could you avoid piping title that are links to other disambiguation pages (WP:INTDABLINK)? Given the lack of inclusion criteria, that's understandable, as there is no need to justify being in a list that doesn't have standards for inclusion. However, that also points to original research as being the source for inclusion.

Various sources. A general day:

• Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation/Candidates for disambiguation by extending link 80-90% successful
• Templates with disambiguation links 60-70%
• Articles With Multiple Dablinks (all with multiple ie 2 or more links) 40-50%
• Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/The Daily Disambig (all multiples & Changes over 1 day) varying success
• Today's Dablink Report - it is generally lunchtime by then
• Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links/The Daily Disambig/Recently added at least 24 hrs in arrears

If I still have time before the 12 hr updates of "Templates...", "Articles With..", & "Today's Dablink.." then I might go & try The monthly list &/or "Articles With.." (I am currently on "B" for single links). On the one hand, thanks for your edit disambiguating Vanity Fair, I forgot it needed disambiguation. On the other hand, you changed it to Vanity Fair (magazines) which seems to be a list of older magazines of that name that haven't published in quite a while. It needed to be Vanity Fair (magazine) which is the modern still active fashion magazine which has multiple international editions. Dab link to battery on Flouride

From the structure of the text, I think it is clear that this "battery" means "electrical battery". In the academic society of electrochemistry, the word "electrical battery" is not common and "battery" is normally used. Per Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Monisha Shah you were the original creator of the article/draft about Monisha Shah (and probably were aware of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Monisha Shah (2nd nomination)), your COI was in my view correctly identified eventually. While I was aware of the COI I assumed you were not in consultatation with the subject of the article, but had rather created it on your own initiative. However per WP:COIN#Samir Shah her brother's article was originally created in draft by his personal assistant and while neutralised prior to mainspace was subsequently edited in mainspace by the same PAID account. I declared my COI when I first created the article (both in edit summary and on the talk page). When I heard about her background (membership of various bodies etc) on joining the board of WMUK, I thought she was definately notable and therefore created the article. I had met her and seen her CV, but created the article on my own initiative using publicly available sources. I have watched the 2 AfDs & the deletion review but after being warned not to comment early on, stayed out of any discussions. WikiCup 2022 May newsletter

The second round of the 2022 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 115 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top seven contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 11 featured articles and the 79 good articles achieved in total by contestants.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

1. Epicgenius, with 1264 points from 2 featured article, 4 good articles and 18 DYKs. Epicgenius was a finalist last year but has now withdrawn from the contest as he pursues a new career path.
2. AryKun, with 1172 points from two featured articles, one good article and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews.
3. Bloom6132, with 605 points from 44 in the news items and 4 DYKs.
4. Sammi Brie, with 573 points from 8 GAs and 21 DYKs.
5. Ealdgyth, with 567 points from 11 GAs and 34 good and featured article reviews.
6. Panini!, with 549 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and several other sources.
7. Lee Vilenski, with 545 points from 1 FA, 4 GAs and a number of reviews.

I have a problem, I cannot merge two wikidata items, maybe because of, in the English Wikipedia there are two lists of municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City or San Luis Potosí Municipality

In the Wikipedia in English there are two "similar" lists of municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City. I think List of presidents of San Luis Potosí Municipality (the short and incomplete list) must be DELETED, and List of mayors and municipal presidents of San Luis Potosí City (the long list, with more references) must be PRESERVED.

This situation appeared when I was trying to merge two items at Wikidata: Q24062676 and Q111955806, because I believed both of them simultaneously pointed/point to/from their respective lists in the English Wikipedia and in the Spanish Wikipedia Anexo:Alcaldes de San Luis Potosí, but I am not sure.

Hello Rodw,

At the time of the last newsletter (No.26, September 2021), the backlog was 'only' just over 6,000 articles. In the past six months, the backlog has reached nearly 16,000, a staggering level not seen in several years. A very small number of users had been doing the vast majority of the reviews. Due to "burn-out", we have recently lost most of this effort. Furthermore, several reviewers have been stripped of the user right for abuse of privilege and the articles they patrolled were put back in the queue.

Several discussions on the state of the process have taken place on the talk page, but there has been no action to make any changes. The project also lacks coordination since the "position" is vacant.

In the last 30 days, only 100 reviewers have made more than 8 patrols and only 50 have averaged one review a day. There are currently 812 New Page Reviewers, but about a third have not had any activity in the past month. All 861 administrators have this permission, but only about a dozen significantly contribute to NPP.

This means we have an active pool of about 450 to address the backlog. We cannot rely on a few to do most of the work as that inevitably leads to burnout. A fairly experienced reviewer can usually do a review in a few minutes. If every active reviewer would patrol just one article per day, the backlog would very quickly disappear.

If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, do suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.

Hello Rodw,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000 at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). WikiCup 2022 July newsletter

The third round of the 2022 WikiCup has now come to an end. Each of the sixteen contestants who made it into the fourth round had at least 180 points, which is a lower figure than last year when 294 points were needed to progress to round 4. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

• BennyOnTheLoose, with 746 points, a tally built both on snooker and other sports topics, and on more general subjects.
• Bloom6132, with 683 points, garnered mostly from "In the news" items and related DYKs.
• Sammi Brie, with 527, from a variety of submissions related to radio and television stations.

Between them contestants achieved 5 featured articles, 4 featured lists, 51 good articles, 149 DYK entries, 68 ITN entries, and 109 good article reviews. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Hello Rodw,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination

MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.

Open letter to the WMF

The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.

WikiCup 2022 September newsletter

The fourth round of the WikiCup has now finished. 383 points were required to reach the final, and the new round has got off to a flying start with all finalists already scoring. In round 4, Bloom6132 with 939 points was the highest points-scorer, with a combination of DYKs and In the news items, followed by BennyOnTheLoose, Sammi Brie and Lee Vilenski. The points of all contestants are swept away as we start afresh for the final round.

At this stage, we say goodbye to the eight competitors who didn't quite make it; thank you for the useful contributions you have made to the Cup and Wikipedia, and we hope you will join us again next year. For the remaining competitors, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them, and importantly, before the deadline on October 31st!

This IP is a sock of prolific sockmaster Cadeken. See WP:Sockpuppet investigations/Cadeken/Archive, who has created dozens of accounts and used even more IPs. The editing pattern is identical. IPs in southern California always pop up when a registered sock is blocked. The IPs seek meatpuppets with this message to evade a block or policies. Sundayclose (talk) 14:51, 12 September 2022 (UTC)
