Question from Modicumx (20:57, 7 November 2023)

Hi I was just wondering if there's a way to look up something I tried to edit YEARS ago and some guy banned me for like a week(?) but I never found out who he was or why. It's probably hard to tell I just started this account now and i don't recall if I even used the same email address. (I think I had made a suggestion that all lists of statistics be put as bullet points rather than be buried in prose paragraphs.) Anyway thanks for any help u can give! --Modicumx (talk) 20:57, 7 November 2023 (UTC)

Modicumx, if you have enough of the right information it is possible to find almost any edit, though it could be tedious, depending on what information is missing. The title of the article, your user-name at the time, (or IP address), and the date, with as much accuracy as possible, all help to narrow down over a billion possibilities (1.18×109) to a more manageable number. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:23, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Cool template

...which is now in use on over 8,200 pages. Nicely done.

  The Template Barnstar
is hereby awarded to Pbsouthwood, for the creation and development of the Annotated link template, which enables significant enhancement and ease of construction to embedded lists, including those in outlines. Kudos.    — The Transhumanist   13:02, 10 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Scoophole2021 (08:44, 12 November 2023)

Can you block 24.38.243.85? User continually inserts The Strive for the Million into Primetime Emmy ceremonies' articles Scoophole2021 (talk). 08:44, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Scoophole2021, I have no knowledge of, or interest in American TV, so it is not immediately obvious to me why this is a problem, other than that no reference is cited, and there are other claims on those pages also without citation. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:14, 12 November 2023 (UTC)
C.Fred has blocked that IP address recently and is more likely to have a useful opinion on the matter. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:23, 12 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Uisiandiisu (05:30, 14 November 2023)

I want to write a poem about a swordfish or sailfish. I would like to know some imagery dealing with the five senses and body and motion concerning one or both of them? --Uisiandiisu (talk) 05:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Uisiandiisu, I suggest you start with Swordfish and Sailfish, where there may be useful links, Maybe also fish locomotion and sensory systems in fish. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, so you are more likely to find information than poetic imagery, and will probably have to make up the imagery for yourself. However the information may provide inspiration for suitable imagery. Good luck. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 06:03, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from Mr6966 (23:47, 14 November 2023)

Hello Pbsouthwood,

What is the preferred citation format wikipedia uses? --Mr6966 (talk) 23:47, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

There is no specific preferred citation format. There are a few points to consider. Also read Wikipedia:Citing sources
  • It should be possible to identify the content cited. Use WP:inline citation at the end of the relevant content, or at the end of the paragraph if the whole paragraph is from the same source.
  • Ensure that you provide sufficient information that another person can identify and potentially find the source.
  • Do not use bare urls, they are vulnerable to linkrot, and can be lost forever
  • Cite directly after a direct quote or a potentially contentious claim. Place the citation directly after punctuation, without a space, wherever this is reasonably practicable.
  • If a page has an established citation style, do not change it without discussing on the talk page first, see WP:CITEVAR
  • If you start a new article, use the style you think best suited to the topic field, or one that you are familiar with.
  • If you are adding a citation to a page with a style you do not understand, just use a style that looks reasonable, someone else can change it to the page's existing style if they want to. It is better to have the citations, style is secondary.
  • There are templated styles available which apply one of the accepted styles automatically. e.g. Help:Citation Style 1
  • The reference definition can be in the text or in a list in the reference section, or some of each. If there are a few references that are used a lot, it can be easier to manage them in a list. many references each used only once can work better if kept in the text.
  • It is better to put too much information in the citation than too little. It is easy to remove unnecessary data, but can be impossible to find omitted data. (e.g. lost by linkrot, which edition of a book)
This is a fairly complex topic, and there is much more that can be said. There are several help pages, guidance pages and personal opinion essays covering it on Wikipedia, so I will not even try to be comprehensive. Seek and you may find. If not, ask again on the more specific subtopic of interest. I am not an expert, and tend to just use what I know best, but I do add a lot of citations. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 08:21, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Nadja Tesich sandbox page

Hi Peter, it's been a while! I have prepared a draft of a page on the actor, writer, filmmaker and muse Nadja Tesich. I have not yet published it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Nadja_Tesich&action=edit&section=9

Can you advise? Is it OK to publish it?

Hope you are well, seeing lots of new things under the surface and enjoying time in the water.

Cory CoryHReynolds (talk) 23:22, 18 November 2023 (UTC)

Hi Cory, You need to cite references from reliable sources for everything you have written before anyone can assess notability of the subject and accuracy and relevance of the content you have provided. So not ready for publishing until that is done. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 23:10, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
I am well thank you, and quite busy with Wikipedia and my dive site mapping project, (two good dives yesterday, still busy processing the data). A normal wikilink to the draft page (like Draft:Nadja Tesich) is usually adequate. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 23:21, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Peter,
I tried to cite a lot of sources. Do you think it is publishable as is?

Cory CoryHReynolds (talk) 02:16, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Cory, I do not see any references on the draft page. Where are they? · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:35, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
You may find the explanations at WP:Citing sources useful. Cherrs, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:49, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Wow - you are right. I had added 22 citations but they are not showing now. maybe i left them too long while i was waiting to hear back - being too cautious. I will add them back now. sorry for the confusion! CoryHReynolds (talk) 12:48, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Cory, did you save the edits? Forgetting to save is the usual reason for that sort of loss. It happens to all of us some time. Don't riskmit, save whenever you are done with something for a time. If it is not perfect, you can always go back and fix it later. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 13:34, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
HI Peter, I just added all of the citations, photos and infobox back in. You are right. i had not saved because i was afraid that would make the page public. it is only my second page and the last one was created many months ago. my fault entirely. Anyway, i have saved it. I wonder if you can see it now?
I am not sure if you are still technically my mentor, as assigned originally by Wikipedia. I'm sorry if I'm creating work for you that is not appropriate! But if you are able to advise me here, I would be very grateful. Thanks so much!
Draft:Nadja Tesich
Cory CoryHReynolds (talk) 13:38, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Cory, I am fairly confident the article would survive in mainspace. I have not checked all your references, but those I have look suitable for purpose, and I think the notability requirements have been met, but I am not expert in biographical work, nor in the topic area of arts and entertainment. There are still a large number of paragraphs with no citations, someone may challenge that content. I suggest you try to cite a bit more comprehensively, then submit for review. You will probably get a few queries and may have to reference more content, but it will be good experience in learning what is expected in this topic area. I am happy to help where I can, but there are lots of Wikipedians far more skilled and experienced in your field of interest, and I think it will help your learning to make contact with some of them.
Mentoring is open ended, any time you need to ask about some aspect of editing, you are welcome, and in some cases I may be able to help. There are also pages like WP:Teahouse where you can ask questions and expect useful answers, and meet editors with similar interests. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 14:45, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
thanks Peter! CoryHReynolds (talk) 14:47, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Cory, I see that one of the images has been challenged for permission on Commons. Note that Commons does not allow non-free images at all, and Wikipedia allows only very limited use of them. Generally only when a free image is not available, and then only for specific purposes. One of those purposes is probably applicable here. See WP:Non-free images. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 15:30, 20 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks Peter, I took it off. CoryHReynolds (talk) 16:43, 20 November 2023 (UTC)

Image License: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nadja-tesich-bleecker-theater.jpg#filehistory

Hi Peter,

I am already apologizing for this question. I am just not great at understanding how to add code to anything -- but in particular to the image listed below and in the subject. I am trying to use a photograph that was originally published on the New York Review of Books website in an article by and about Nadja Tesich, the person whose page I am attempting to create. File:Nadja-tesich-bleecker-theater.jpg#filehistory

Draft:Nadja Tesich

Can you tell me where I am meant to add the correct tag, and what the correct tag would be for an image that was published in 2015 on one of the world's most respected literary reviews?

I poked around and thought I could figure it out just by using my intuition, but i ended up feeling so stupid. I know it must be SO obvious.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sincerely,

Cory CoryHReynolds (talk) 02:31, 5 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi Cory, It is a non-free image, these may be used on Wikipedia in special circumstances, mainly to identify the subject of an article when there is no reasonable probability of a free licensed image being available. I think this applies and the photo is suitable for the purpose, but this is not my field of expertise and I may be wrong.
I looked for the right tag, but I am unable to say with any certainty which one should be used. This is a use case I have never personally dealt with, and I find the instructions confusing too, so I am going to have to pass the buck.
My best suggestion is to ask what to do at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. I also see that you may not be able to use the image until the article is in mainspace, and the image file may have to be deleted until the article is in mainspace, so you may have to upload it again, complete with template and rationale when the time is right. Once again, not my field, so please try asking at the help page I linked above. Let me know how it goes, or ping me from the discussion. You may link to the discussions on my talk page if it is useful to help explain the case. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:25, 7 December 2023 (UTC)

I started an article but it's not yet ready to publish. I am no longer able to find a link to my working articles. Can you point me in the right direction? --Mgjanulaitis (talk) 21:51, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Mgjanulaitis if you are referring to the draft it is at Draft:Corner Bowl Software.
I suggest you carefully read Wikimedia's terms of use policy and scrupulously comply with the requirements. Also read the requirements for Wikipedia:Notability, and ensure that you establish notability at as early a stage of writing as reasonably practicable, and make it easy for any reader to see why the topic is notable. If you cannot demonstrate notabilty, the article will be deleted. Include only content that is encyclopedic in nature, style and tone, and is supported by reliable sources. Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) has important conditions which apply to your draft. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:28, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Alex Mutebi (16:09, 14 December 2023)

Dear Sir,

Greetings from Africa. I have just signed up with Wikipedia although I have been using it almost from when it first started. You have been assigned as my mentor and I am honored by the privilege. I'd like to learn to contribute articles as well as to edit. I did edit once or twice, but that was over a decade ago if not longer. For now, I would like to contribute a short biography.

Thank you and looking forward to hearing back from you.

Kind regards,

Alex --Alex Mutebi (talk) 16:09, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia Alex, I will help as I can, but I am not expert in biographies, and biographies of living people are subject to quite strict requirements. Please make yourself familiar with the general Wikipedia:List of policies and guidelines and particularly the guidance regarding WP:Biographies of living persons, so that you can avoid problems. The first step for creating a new article on any topic is to establish WP:Notability of the subject, which requires substantial discussion in (usually multiple) independent third party reliable sources. The sources do not have to be available on the internet, or in English, but it is helpful if some are. You can create the article in draft space or as a sub-page of your user page, which will allow you to work on it until it is ready to publish in main space as a Wikipedia article. You are welcome to request comment at any stage of development, and I will try to give useful answers to any reasonable questions.

We tend to be informal in our communications here, we normally address each other directly by username, but you are welcome to address me as Peter if you wish.

I wish you success, particularly as we need more coverage of African topics.

Regards, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 17:35, 14 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from WhirrSlorward (06:23, 19 December 2023)

I am editing the page for the 2022 Furuvik Zoo chimp shootings, using info cleared up by a more recent press release by the zoo, but it is in Swedish (which I can't read) and so I am using chrome's inbuilt google translate. How would I go about noting that in the citations? Or should I just leave the editing to somebody who can read the language? Thanks! --WhirrSlorward (talk) 06:23, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

WhirrSlorward, You are responsible for accuracy of translation of material you add to an article. If you consider the translation provided by google to be correct, you should rewrite it in you own words sufficiently to avoid copyright infringement, preserving the facts, and state in the citation that the source is in Swedish. If you do not know if the translation is accurate, leave it to someone else. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 09:47, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Question from Randompersonediting (05:04, 26 December 2023)

Hi,Mentor which csd tag should i use for the following article Draft:Eunchae (singer),this draft is a mix of 2 articles present in main --K-Pop contributor (✍️📚) 05:04, 26 December 2023 (UTC)

Randompersonediting, I suggest you engage with the contributor on the draft talk page and explain the situation, and give links to the existing articles which this one is purportedly a mixture of. Explain why those articles are more suitable for Wikipedia. It is not clear to me from the information you have provided that there is reason to propose speedy deletetion. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:26, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
the author copy pasted the content from two articles Kwon Chae-won & Yebin (singer) please see the draft once let me know what would be better K-Pop contributor (✍️📚) 14:12, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
There are several editors of Draft:Eunchae (singer), and if there is any content or references in the draft which would improve Kwon Chae-won, it should be moved to mainspace and the content merged into that article. Then blank and a redirect should be created from Eunchae (singer) to Kwon Chae-won who is the same person, then the draft can be deleted as a Db-G6 deletion of merged draft. If there is no worthwhile content or refs to merge, then Db-a10 should cover it, but the redirect should be created anyway as it is a valid redirect and to avoid having the same thing happen again. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 18:57, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Alternatively you could just WP:PROD and give your reasons. There is no rush. The redirect would still be recommended. · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 19:49, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Thank you K-Pop contributor (✍️📚) 02:57, 27 December 2023 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Surface-supplied diving equipment

Hello, Pbsouthwood,

Welcome to Wikipedia! I edit here too, under the username MPGuy2824, and I thank you for your contributions.

I wanted to let you know, however, that I have tagged Surface-supplied diving equipment for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. You may find our guide for writing quality articles to be extremely informative. Also, you may want to consider working on future articles in draft space first, where they cannot be deleted for lacking content.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top. If the page is already deleted by the time you come across this message and you wish to retrieve the deleted material, please contact the deleting administrator.

For any further query, please leave a comment here and prepend it with {{Re|MPGuy2824}}. And, don't forget to sign your reply with ~~~~ . Thanks!

Hello, Pbsouthwood,
It felt strange deleting this blank page but I couldn't discern what you wanted to do with it so the criteria seemed to fit. Of course, you can restore it any time you like. Liz Read! Talk! 05:00, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Hi Liz I was distracted part way through splitting an article into a previous redirect. No harm done and thanks for the message. I will go back and finish the job. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 05:30, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Category:Diving regulators

A tag has been placed on Category:Diving regulators indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and removing the speedy deletion tag. Liz Read! Talk! 17:34, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

Admin request

Hi, as an admin, would you mind reviewing this talk page comment? It seems inappropriate to me (comparing Israelis/Jews to Hitler), but if someone was going to act on it, better someone uninvolved in the discussion, unlike me. Asking you because your name was at the top of the "recently active admin" list. Thank you. SomethingForDeletion (talk) 06:49, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

SomethingForDeletion, I took a look. While the reasoning may be debatable, I see no inappropriate comparing of Israelis/Jews to Hitler. The logic of most of the arguments made in the discussion is unconvincing at best. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 11:19, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from Dondatrace (07:03, 23 January 2024)

Is there a place where an editor earns from creating and editing articles? --Dondatrace (talk) 07:03, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Dondatrace It is not clear what you are asking. Wikipedia is created and maintained by the voluntary work of our editors, for which there is no payment. It is not forbidden to make paid edits, but if you do, it is absolutely required that you declare on Wikipedia that you are paid for those edits, and by whom you are paid. Failure to comply with this requirement will lead to being blocked from editing or banned from the project when you are caught. If this does not answer your question, please try to make it clearer what you want to know. Cheers, · · · Peter Southwood (talk): 07:25, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
