Welcome to the 2020 WikiCup!

Happy New Year, Happy New Decade and Happy New WikiCup! The competition begins today and all article creators, expanders and improvers are welcome to take part. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page. We are relaxing the rule that only content on which you have completed significant work during 2020 will count; now to be eligible for points in the competition, you must have completed significant work on the content at some time! Any questions on the rules or on anything else connected to the Cup should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. Good luck! The judges for the WikiCup are Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email), Godot13 (talk · contribs · email), Vanamonde93 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk) 11:43, 1 January 2020 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Arbitration

  • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
  • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

Phab vs GitHub?

@MusikAnimal and Samwilson: I see you three are the maintainers of XTools. I notice you use GitHub instead of Phab/diffusion for source control. I'm just starting to work on some WMF-related code, and trying to settle on which one to use. Might I enquire as to your thoughts on why you picked the one you did? -- RoySmith (talk) 18:54, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

@RoySmith: I think we chose GitHub simply because it's familiar to more people, and hence more welcoming to new contributors. It's also just got a lot more features. If you're not bothered by using proprietary software, you might enjoy GitHub more. We actually have our GitHub mirrored on Diffusion, this way Phab tasks will surface any commits that mention the task number. I'm not sure how to set this up, though. I think you need a Phab admin. MusikAnimal talk 19:41, 13 January 2020 (UTC)
@RoySmith and MusikAnimal: I think repo hosting in Phabricator is deprecated, and those repos are just mirrors (or unmigrated); everything else is in Gerrit. I can't find the documentation about this though; it dates from the idea that Gerrit would be deprecated and things moved to Phab, and the reverse decision was made. But yeah, the same issues applies to Gerrit vs Github in most ways. Other than MediaWiki extensions, it's usually easier to get things going on Github, especially now with Actions being a thing. Sometimes, Gerrit-hosted code can get more Wikimedia eyeballs, if that's important (e.g. you can get LibraryUpgrader and things like that). —Sam Wilson 23:55, 13 January 2020 (UTC)

I tried out my latest project on diffusion, mostly because the kubernetes quick-start instructions walk you through that. It sounded like there was some close integration that was important, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

One thing I discovered that I really dislike about diffusion is that it's slow to expose newly pushed changes. The first time I did a push and it didn't show up, I assumed I had done something wrong. What I didn't realize was that diffusion just polls the underlying git repo on a schedule. On Github, things update instantaneously.

I also discovered something nice on Github today that I didn't know about. I cloned my diffusion repos into Github, and got a warning that I was using a version of django with a known security flaw. It even auto-built me a pull request with the required fix. So, that's pretty cool.

Anyway thanks for the input. I'll stick with Github. I was kind of leaning that way already, but good to have confirmation. I can see the desire to be entirely self-sufficient for official WMF projects, but Github just seems like the better tool. -- RoySmith (talk) 00:41, 14 January 2020 (UTC)
