New Members Our new members this month are Keeper76 and Jort227. We have now reached 40 members. The Album The album was released on October 30, 2000. It debuted at #1 in 28 countries and sold over 12 million copies worldwide. This album marked the end of U2's experimental phase in the 90's. However, they did not really return to their more traditional rock sound until How to Dismantle An Atomic Bomb. Rolling Stone called it "U2's third masterpiece". The song "Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of" was written by Bono for his late friend, Michael Hutchence. On several occasions the band said that they were "re-applying for the job of the best band in the world" with this album. The singles released from the album are: Beautiful Day, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of, Walk On and Elevation. Take a look at the All That You Can't Leave Behind article for more info.

I stumbled onto the article in recent changes, read the "article" as it were and couldn't find a good place to revert, so I added a tag stating that the entire article was completely "unreferenced controversial information", to use your words. Aptronym

Hi Keeper. Regarding your edit to aptronym, did you include Goodpaster as the spelling / pronunciation is similar to pastor? As paster means something different, it's not actually an aptronym. The Wizard of Id page is not encyclopedic, it's just one comic strip that demonstrates aptronyms exist - there are already sources which do so in the article, and I can't see how the page satisfies WP:EL. You also appeared to remove Derek Jeter - several names on the list are foreign words, you would have to gain consensus for removing non-English aptronyms on the talk page first. Deiz, I am sincerely baffled by this. According to my "contributions" page, I made these changes today (Sept. 25th) at 1 in the morning (CST). Here's the problem - I don't have a computer at my home, only my office, and I was not at work at 1 this morning - I can't even get in my locked building if I wanted to. I did not make these changes (nor would I!). If you look at my other contributions to any article, you'll see that the time stamps are 100% consistently during the day and/or evening, never in the middle of the morning. That being said, I still believe Rev. Goodpaster should belong here for two reasons - he is notable (has a longstanding wiki article) and because precedence was set with the inclusion of Tim Duncan (because he is "dunking" a basketball I presume?) I guess I wish he was a professional paster (someone who pastes?) but I don't think that exists :-) As for the Wizard of Id reference, it existed here long before I was even an editor so I have no vested interest in it being here. Didn't create it, didn't even know it existed until you pointed it out and I lookied through the article's history. And I have no problem with Derek Jeter being here (even though I will be honest and say I despise the New York Yankees) or other foreign language inclusions for that matter. I see the edit time as 10:04 KST (UTC +9) which would be 01:04 UTC, and assuming CST is US Central time adjusted for daylight saving (CDT, UTC -5) and my maths is correct, that would be 20:04 CDT on Monday evening in Chicago. The history of a page shows the appropriate time according to the time setting in your preferences, unlike signed comments on talk pages which always show UTC - could this explain the confusion? Of course, if you genuinely did not make the edit, you should keep a close eye on your account.. Duncan is also a "soundalike", which is again one logical leap too far to be an aptronym, removed accordingly. With a list like this, you have to be very stringent about applying the inclusion criteria or all kinds of subjective entries get into the list and the page suffers. I hope your account is OK! I genuinely did not make that edit. Time stamps are something I can't figure out in wikiworld - things have different time stamps on different pages...I'm sure it's logical to someone and I'm sure I can change my preferences, but I don't. All I know is that the rest of my edits are substantially different in their respective time stamps. All of them. There aren't any other single edits anywhere near that time stamp in my contributions. I didn't make that change. Fortunately, you caught it and reverted it to where it should be. Thanks for removing Duncan also, inconsistency is a bane to reliability and credibility. I'll keep an eye on my contribs... It can be a bit confusing.. I note the edit was a little out of your normal range, a couple of hours later than any other edits you've made in the past couple of weeks.. if 20:04 makes as little sense as 01:04 then keep an eye out. Thanks Deiz. I went through my entire history, and indeed I have made other edits around that same time. My sincere apologies for the assumption I had made about never editing at that time - all I saw was was "1:04" and immediately went the conspiracy theory route - my bad. I didn't realize that it was UTC in my contribs page, I thought it was local. It now seems much more likely I truly made that edit (at 8pm US central time) rather than a sabouteur (i'm smiling at myself right now) It was an unintentional edit, probably hit "undo" accidently or revert. I left work at 8:15 pm, much later than usual, which made it stand out on my contribs page (I only edit at my office). I left work 11 minutes after that edit. I had been at work at that point for approx 14 hours and must have been drunk with power. Or just tired. Or careless. Or just drunk. Whichever way, good catch, good revert. I'll be more careful. On another note, I've been looking at philopedia's talk page. He/she has deleted your warnings pertaining to his/her much more aggregious "mistakes" to Aptronym. There are two reasons for removing edits on talk pages. If an editor removes an "instructional message" (aka warning) and demonstrates that they got the point, no worries. Continued removal of warnings to hide / ignore them and no change in behaviour is double jeopardy. I've got an eye on aptronym, if he disrupts it with random wordplay again he knows he can and will be blocked for disruption. Deiz talk 16:39, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Not sure wheere I got the idea that it was uncivil. Seems my learning curve in here resembles a steep steep hill. • Thanks Katr67. I hope my "secretive" sp correction wasn't harmful. I rarely do it, in this case the correction was for readability. I was adding my own comments and thought the other's comments would be more effective if spelled correctly (I changed "waster" to "waste" and "oppinion" to "opinion". Just a little query, would you be able to tell me how I should reference information given from a conversation? No problem, glad I could help. If someone does question the accuracy of his "retirement plans", it may be possible to find a local paper that perhaps does a write-up about his career, maybe not. If it is challenged, I would say just remove it as it is (for now) both unreferencable and relatively unimportant to the article as a whole. Can always be added back if/when he is replaced. I'm sure that will make at least a paper. Again, I find it highly unlikely to be challenged. Now, if you went to Bono's article and typed "Bono will be retiring in 2008, he told me so himself", I can't imagine that staying in the article too long...:-) Cheers! Hi Keeper. A couple of minutes ago an unregistered user went round the Hasland Junior School page and marked just about every minute piece of information without a reference as 'citation needed'. It looks like another user (Gr1st), has removed the "citation needed" litter, which I agree was WAY overdone. The only one still on the page as of right now is the one after the announced "retirement" of the current leader, which I think is appropriate. You may be better off just removing that one sentence until a formal announcement is made and/or published, could end up a WP:BIO issue and draw unnecessary attention to the well written article. Yikes, I really screwed up, and immediately tried to get help here. Thank you for reverting something I was unable to fix! I recently begun working at Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, and was trying to efficiently clean up the Orlando entry (which has 165 links to the disam page incorrectly). After picking out the few that should have linked to Virginia Wolff's novel and the Handel opera, the solution I was going for, in an effort of boldness, was based on my observation that the vast majority of edits that wikilinked "Orlando" were intending to go to "Orlando, Florida". I was attempting, in vain, to redirect "Orlando" to "Orlando, Florida", and then subsequently adding an "otheruses" tag on top of that page back to "Orlando (disambiguation)". I mistyped "Orlando (disambiguation)" as "Orlando 9disambiguation)" by not holding the shift key for the left parenthetical mark, and mistakenly hit save instead of preview. Each time I tried to fix it, I made it worse, so I went to a specific admin's talk page (Dekimasu) for help rolling back. I'm all done with Orlando...thanks again for your help. It's all good. I wasn't complaining... I was just wondering what end you were trying to achieve with your edits. The above explanation makes sense. Everyone makes mistakes, and it really doesn't matter, provided they eventually get fixed or otherwise resolved. Personally, I tend to look at why the edits were made, not what edits were made. Article on non-speciesist egalitarianism

Hi Keeper, thanks for your message. Absolutely, Wikipedia truly is wonderful; similar in many ways to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy; even better, for sure, there being no limit on how much information can get into it; the lack of space in the Hitchhiker's, as you know, forced them to massively limit their entries, like "The Earth. Mostly Harmless." As for the issue at hand: The concept of non-speciesist egalitarianism, like non-racist and non-sexist egalitarianism of the past, is a real issue and has been written about by intellectuals and philosophers hundreds of years back. Do you suggest that the validity of the article is in dispute, or is it only a matter of my titles? I would thoroughly appreciate your help. As you know, I am new to Wikipedia and it seems I need some assistance with this in order to get it right. 'Speciesism,' as you know, is racism to animals. (We are kinder to dogs than to pigs, but pigs are more intelligent than dogs, even smarter than some chimpanzees, and certainly will be feeling the same kind of pain than an abused dog would.) Would "Non-speciesism" be a suitable and uncontroversial title for the article? I looked it up on Google and there were 120 results, including one that says "non-speciesism (in the narrow sense in which I've used the term and which I think the Wikipedia definition favours)." -- Ciao, Stig Shousokutsuu (talk) 21:07, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

The argument that has been made by so many philosophers, and I trust you will agree, is that there's no need to prioritize human rights over animal rights. We don't need to eat or wear the remains of animals and thus we can give them the same compassion that we award our family and out pets. By the simple action of ceasing to eat and wear dead animals, we immediately solve one of the issues; this takes no effort at all and doesn't in any way distract from the important issues pertaining to human rights. -- Kind regards, Stig Shousokutsuu (talk) 21:54, 21 November 2007 (UTC)

It is the issue at hand: this is what the article has been set up for. Would it be acceptable if I kept my article as is (I just started; I, and as I mentioned, more notable philosophers and intellectuals, will keep adding to it) but changed the title to "Animals and Egalitarianism"? The issue that prompted an AfD was not the validity of the article itself, but that the title was a neologism. (When I put up "Vegalitarian" I did not know of this policy.) I'm not creating a new page, but I am about to move "Animal Egalitarianism" to "Animals and Egalitarianism". Perhaps its just your writing style, but the challenge came across as accusatory (and I did allow that maybe it was just "snarky"). You are no doubt quite the smart person (your user page says so), so I am surprised that you do not see that the way you confronted a differeing opinions might be seen as a bit abrasive (whether that was your intent or not). Please draw in the claws, I am not your enemy and I promise you I am not that vested in that article or The Hat. My differeing opinion was offered. let me assure you I did not mean to upset you to the point of confrontation, but if upset you are, let me now apologize. Point taken. And I also apologize. I think perhaps it is a writing style problem here, and upon rereading my comments, I can see how they can in this case (easily) be taken as snarky. I will attest here that I wasn't intending to come off that way, I was not upset then (nor now), nor was I flashing my claws (in fact, I keep my nails very well trimmed around here; life's too short, and Wikipedia doesn't pay that well). I will also say I had to look up snarky in Wiktionary to see if I fit that bill, so don't let my userpage fool you too much. Would you like me to strike any comments on of my comments towards you on the discussion page?   • It's still open? That's a holiday weekend for you...I unwatchlisted it, figured it was closed...hmm...I'll be right back.... Ok, just looked in on the article, paying close attention to the references. A couple of reasons why I won't change my position (I won't use the term "vote" for what is really a discussion towards consensus and not a poll, but you know that). 1. I just don't see the verifiability needed to warrant inclusion (I promise I'm not a deletionist, merely a verifiability-ist). I am starting to see the notability though, and think the article is vastly improved. The articles for OC Register, Deseret News, LA times, Pasadena Star News, even OCWeekly, are likely legitimate, but the links are to the (current) homepages and not to the stories themselves. By definition, that's an unacceptable source as there's no way to check the accuracy of the statements in Wikipedia against the statements in those articles (which is the whole point of being a secondary reference like Wikipedia, and not a primary reference like the articles it supposedly sources). I understand you likely changed them to the respective homepages because before they were viewable only as "archives" that one would have to pay to retrieve (also unacceptable in wikiland) 2. The references that are to the correct source/story are either passing mentions (like the story about french fries that says "the hat gives you lots of friench fries with your order"), or are blogs, which I detest as sources, or promotional in nature (POV problems) like the chamber of commerce. But take heart, good editor, looking at the AfD's progression, the consensus is likely going to be for keep anyway. The Hat will prevail. I'm abstaining from adding to the conversation on the AfD as I really have no vested interest in the article staying or going, I've said my piece there (and here). Citing the bystander effect, I can only presume some other editor will pick up on the sourcing problem and maybe renominate. Oh sure. I'd be happy to move it. I was actually going to call it that originally, because I thought it sounded like a fairly common song title. I checked to see if anything existed at Staring at the Sun (song) and nothing did, so I called it that. As much as I despise SHEli at the moment, he does have his possitives. He gives the Giants a steady QB (which more than half the league can't claim - more than 50 different starters this year) and he has taken the Giants to 2 straight (maybe 3) playoffs appearences but his inconsitency is killing us. I dunno how it is in Minnesota or outside of New York area, but that doesn't cut the mustard for an NY sports team. And we've gotta live with this guy for possibly the next 7, 10 years. My feeling for Minnesota is they will find a QB this off season. Pennington would be a great guy in Minny. Heck, I wish Grossman was in our division. I've had to deal with Donovan McNabb tearing us appart for the past 6 years. Now we got the Golden Boy on our hands. I think what's really killing Eli is the lack of a consistent run game. Hightower keeps getting nicked and Derrick Ward is rumored to be out for the year. Without the run game to slow things down, this puts the entire game on Elisha's back. I cringe every time the ball is in the air. Yeah, i was wondering if i might need to annotate that entry for an international audience. It's hilarious in the UK: "baps" is ultra-cliched slang for "breasts". Note the last disambiguation of baps.

In which case, the assoc'n of plastic surgeons naming themselves after the most cliched female enhancement is... rather apt.

Maybe we can need to add an explanatory note re it being UK slang? Actually, more likely Commonwealth slang, because aussies & kiwis know it too.

I'm totally disgusted with this team. The general concensus amongst fellow fans and the talking heads is that this offense needs to be re-vamped. It is an obvious delete, that goes without saying, but I'm pretty sure a speedy tag is not supposed to be put on twice if the "hangon" tag is added (it was). Am I missing something? Does only news/reviews what are circulating or operating internet be witnessed as news & other form of news are hopelessly vague for wiki people ? . Many countries are still lacking behind to access internet structure. This could be 80% public in India where only young are net serchers. But to my debate - I can still place & prove that several news are on prominent news papers of India- Punjab Kesari, Dainik Bhaskar , Rajasthan Patrika on Naresh Sonee. These newspapers hold the readers’ respect of honour as ‘leaders newspapers’ in India same as NewYork Times , Washington Times does carry in their self country. Are all Indian news papers vague or hopeless and aspiring or sharing obsolete nonsense news in India circulating news just for fun and fool the mass? What 4-5 wiki editors/volunteers want to spell for Indian news paers ? Should one article come for negative publicity of wikipedia . Their step motherly treatments for Indian news papers.

However the true investigative, journalists team if wilkipedia has in its wiki project should had asked the reliability/validity or the presence of such newspapers from atleast wiki India project people . Not the fame of the person in question. Fame & notability are two different issues. A philosopher , poet or revolutionary may not be so famous as Tom Cruise or Pamela Anderson . May a important person not be famous as bin laden . May be brilliant and wise brains lack ability to become rich and famous as Brintney Spears who maxmirize mass and media and wikipedians exposing their beautiful breast? May be the person in question who well behave to keep low profile but still need his voice /vision to be heard? But does it mean non so famous lack notability or reliability criteria. News are news whether they come from horses mouth or ducks. Wiki denies indymedia. Why ? are these indymedia people nuts shaking their brains? Indymedia news is reliable-older and far reliable then wiki. People around world access the news promptly within a minute it spread it crucial or simple news only by writing a word on search engine. News readers get access to free news and gossips, debate are created more than any news or blogs.

Like any small or large circulation of internet news or newspaper news - this indymedia generate far better news distributing free for world – The news are news – Every promoted news becomes real notability or generate gossips or debates of the world . You see, Keeper 76, Every brilliant or blurred people of India is not internet searcher , 90 % mass still believe on newspapers news/reviews. In India 90% of people still don’t know what wikipedia means? So does it mean for Indian mass wikipedia is un notable / unreliable/ unimportant / Nonsense?

My dear Keeper76, if you still believe that Naresh Sonee page deserve two lines please focus that the page in question be raised by your good self or by your administrator or some good volenter. Show your generosity/empathy /judgment for my raised or shared work of pain taking research & info writings for wikipedia. I can also raise it again and again writing two words for a sake but what is the point of wasting my time and annoying many people of wiki? So as I am telling again and again I like to create / give a URL link which will display original scanned Indian leading Hindi News papers , Who all had covered new/reviews on Naresh Sonee. This should be enough to convince you. Your goodself can delete all paras/ url link of indymedia if you still feel all are hopeless. But agree to my Indian newspapers atleast.

And do believe never erase my talk on your page while this will remind you how ill wiki make a contributors like me to appear and pose/post his grievances making us run pillar to post disqualifying their hard core done research. While distributing medals of patience to self generated , self praising team. This letter should also reach your chairperson or arbitrary advisors - Who will be able to guide all respected volunteers editors that – leading newspapers news of every country or states or village has a notability value. & news/reviews once or twice , published in far past or immediate presence is enough evidence for notability /reliability –source. A registered newspapers big or small if registered with the governing registrar of the country absolutely un deniably carries a notability/reliability value . Similarly - Info or intro, presence of -Any remote or renowned person, place, performance of non living or living entity in the universe should not be ignored innocently or intentionally by wikipedians while turning nelson eye. Even an individual from a small village of the world if has a notability and had created /attracted some sort of state, city , country news that can attract a ‘world wide view’ or share a ‘world wide vision’ – or is instrumental to lead a new revolution among it’s own area is crucial for global wikipedians. Such things should not be suppressed.

As like google, yahoo or any search engine I wish wikipedia should grow in size as it is –of the people, for the people , by the people . And wikipedia should clearly state it mission –what it exactly means or want ? or what it like to share among people of the world ? Is it a encyclopedia? Info centre of the world events, persons, place? Eventual History acknowledgement ? or Just a ‘Sand on Sea shore’ where any foot walker can rub , write , delete the written messages by whomsoever or ruthlessly rubbed by own self waves of sea (administrator).?

With regards to all of you again . Any good wikipedian like you should come forward , show generosity of reasoning neutral judgment of responsibility of raising my page again Naresh Sonee & Brhmaand Pujan no matter what you feel unreasonable writerings of mine may be scrutinized and deleted from them for ever. & What I personally feel your medal of ‘peace patience award banner’ given/honored to Graeme is just for a sake , a diplomatic way out in a self organized wikipedian style to place me out, by getting rid from me / by ignoring me for ever. International Worship in English

The article as it was did not assert the notability of the subject; I did not know that the other article was up for AFD, the article simply said that it was "a Christian ministry formed on Easter in 1998 by Pastor Bill Majors at Young Nak Presbyterian Church in Myeongdong Seoul, South Korea." It also said when the earlier church was founded, but really made no claim of notability, hence I deleted it. If the author or someone else were to recreate the article and it asserted notability and cited the sources that were there, it would not get speedied. Request for copyedit

Sitakunda Upazila has gone through a rigorous peer review that dealt mostly in content (thanks to Amartya). Then it was put forward as a WP:GAN, but was withdrawn by Miranda as she disagreed very much with the quality of the copy. I have formally applied to the LOCE Request page, but it has long backlog and it's always nicer to work with individuals. The article has almost no content issues (apart from a few redlinks) and is very stable at the point. I myself am a lousy copywriter, but I will be there to meet you every need in developing the article (that includes answering questions, filling in gaps, clarifying information and everything in that line)... I promise. I have high hopes for the article. As far as I can see, all that stands between an FA status and this article are "brilliant prose" and a few, really few, areas of content improvement. A ferry-gaut is docking port that harbors river-ferries (gaut is actually a colonial English term used to refer to Indian small ports and such, i.e. a burning-gaut). Apart from one paragraph of thick mythology the rest of the Pilgrimage section may not be so scary, I guess. And, oh, while you are at it, would you take a look at Miranda's concerns? Rob De Mezieres page

Thanks for your offer of help with this new page.

I have used the format found on other director (particularly SA director - e.g. the Richard Stanley wiki page) sites. I guess I'm struggling to understand what is meant by 'notability'. De Mezieres is one of a fairly small number of South African directors, and the film I refer to in the article is seen as groundbreaking, was socially impactful, and won several awards. Does that make it 'notable'?

Is it a question of adding more referencing?

I'm an academic by profession, so have little doubt I can meet the criteria for the page. But I'm finding it hard to negotiate the help pages and work out quite what I'm doing wrong.

Any help you can offer will be greatly appreciate.

I think one of the issues is a more general lack of writing about South African films, which makes it hard to tick some of the boxes on notability that wiki outlines. However, I can certainly beef up the referencing - I've really just got started on the page.

This might be well beyond the call of duty for you, but it might help me to grasp what's lacking by comparison to a similar page on a similar topic, like this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Stanley_%28film_director%29 . Richard Stanley is clearly a more established director, in that he has a few more credits. But Bokkie (the De Mezieres film) was critically acclaimed and is used, for example, in several South African universities as an example of really good South African filmmaking. So I don't think the two directors are that dissimilar in terms of experience or impact. If you could perhaps tell me what's lacking in the de Mezieres page that's present in the Stanley one, I can address the gaps more competently.

Edited to add: I looked at a couple of other SA film directors' pages, and they seem to have similar structures too - e.g. this one http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Greene and this one, which is a 'stub' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gavin_Hood

Re your query about the term 'mockumentary': It is often applied in contexts other than comedy. For example, The Blair Witch was regarded as a mockumentary - and it wasn't terribly funny! Similarly the war of the worlds thing that Orson Welles did wasn't really noted for its comedic value.

PlanOmatic deletion- need better reason

I am unsure why this page was deleted since it was flagged as being "under construction". I had seen the original page in the deleted que and took the time to contact this company to gain factual information on them. I can see why their last page was deleted since I agree it was blatant advertising. That being said, I inquired as to their history, etc. and actually made an entry for them that was unbiased, neutral and strictly factual. I do not understand how you can claim it was the same page, since it was not. I created a page for the band Stuck Backwards who has received international press coverage as well as national radio exposure. They are frequently a part of national radio programs and should have exposure on wikipedia.

Are you the owner of the company as you stated in your edit summary? If this is your company, I strongly recommend that you read the Wikipedia guideline about conflict of interest. Besides that hurdle, you need to be able to show that the company Beyond Time is notable. Please read the sections of wikipedia about verifiability and reliable sources which both help you show how your company is notable, and then get back to me with links to those. Yep, I've been here, I've just moved more into image work to help with the insane NFCC backlog. I'm adopted, one coach retired and another went on a short wiki-break, but I'm still on the straight and narrow to RfA. And oddly enough, at least 2 of the most successful Admin Coaches, The Transhumanist and Durova, aren't actually admins, they just know how to work with others. Doing image work has given me a new persective on the annoying drudgery face around here. Some of the stuff that gets uploaded is amazing but unsourced, and some of the sourced content leaves me sctatching my head and wondering who would ever be interested in topic X. Yes, I have an account on Wiktionary. The biggest problem with Wikt is not the introduction of neologisms; it is the introduction of unsourced information, period. I consider a sourced neologism to be superior to an unsourced word in moderately common to uncommon use (say Wikt:laser for the former and Wikt:sylph for the latter). One of the strengths of Wiktionary is to be able to deal with newly emerging or extremely uncommon though valid terms through sourcing their emergence and use. I agree, and said so at ANI. I too have less patience with IPs, and this looks like a kid who gets home from school and wants to see how much he/she can do before Mom gets home. Don't range block unless there's a big discussion with lots of people that concur – you need to understand how IP addresses are doled out, and if you don't, range blocking is not for you. This isn't one of those times. There's a fine selection of blocking templates at WP:UTM and an even wider array at Category:User block templates. I wouldn't range block this either. With this type of IP vandalism, after three warnings, I block for either 15 minutes or two hours. It works well for - what is likely - a kid and does not inadvertently block a legit user if the IP address is re-assigned after the frustrated kid powers his computer down and goes out to play. Closing AFDs

Hello there again, young janitor – FYI, when you close AFDs, you need to put the top template above the headline, not below. If you don't, the log page for that date gets messed up and Mathbot doesn't count it as closed. Guess how I learned that? ;-)

I fixed Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The RealCycle Network for you, but you should probably check others you've closed to be sure they're correct. It would be considerably simpler for us if every XFD closing procedure were the same but they're all different; some have the top tag above the headline, like AFD, and some have it below, like WP:TFD. Lame duck argument

The typical DR process hasn't flown out of the window with the addition of term limits; it's still in place. And if it fails, the term limit evaluation will kick in to enforce accountability by the community at large. Your lame duck argument assumes that an administrator will not be subject to DR when its reach is the same. The difference is that DR at the arbcom level is a check by admins - admins judging other admins. I will attempt to strikeout, that may be past me. When I looked at what this guy that I was supposed to vote for was all about, I found traits that I did not like. Case in point is in an arbitration(?) discussion, where I see lots of efforts to "Win" at his various points and interpretation of the regs(I think they ar 'polocies and guidelines') instead of resolving the problems at hand. Closing of the AFD on Air pollution dispersion modeling books

You asked me to mention any questions I had with your first batches of deletions. A7 does not apply to works of creative works, such as Snakes and Ladders (film) its a broad group of things specifically exempted in WP:CSD. On the other hand, you can speedy the author and the actors as A7, just not the film.

and I'd have done Adrian martens as nonsense, based on the last sentence of the 1st para. And G4 can be used only for recreation after XfD, not just multiple justified speedies. After a totally unjustified re-creation, I usually also give a warning.

More important, Anthony turner asserts starring roles --may be unjustifed, but it would be for afd.

The temptation is to go too fast. You'll see some complaints on my talk page. some are justified--they've generally been when I've been in a rush , or tired, or even a little lazy & took a short-cut.

I agree. This particular article was speedied once, recreated, and then the speedy was attempted again but removed from the article by the article creator (presumably the editor and the article's subject are one and the same (COI)). From what I can tell, the speedy was removed by the creator of the article (not a legitimate removal as you know), and then brought to AfD. I tried speedy deleting it per CSD:A7 again and it was removed because of the AfD. I brought it to the attention of an uninvolved editor to try and save the creator some grief, but it seems the best course at this time is to just let the AfD play out. Your thoughts? My sincere apologies for the delay. Things got a bit crazy IRL. It seems the debate was basically a discussion as to whether a main character in a novel and video game is considered notable. Precedence says yes. Two of the delete voices said "fails WP:V". Verifiability really only means can the statements and assertions be verified? The answer is yes. It is separate from the notability issue. The "keep" voices seemed to grasp Verifiability at its essence better and also addressed the notability concerns. DGG explained the idea of subarticles well, but I don't agree that this particular character's article should therefore be unreferenced. It needs references or an unref tag. (And I believe references are out there). There is no deadline.

All that to say, of course I have no real interest in the article or the article's subject matter. The debate had gone stale, it was 8 days old and I was clearing the backlog that day. If you wish to list the debate at WP:DRV, by all means do it. Or find references, or tag it as unref, watchlist it, and renominate in a few months. Cheers mate, happy editing. Changing an AFD to either withdraw it, or change to speedy

Hi you just closed an AFD for a band which upon further review could have been speedied as both the band's website and myspace were dead links, and only had some real trivial coverage. In the comments you said it could have been speedied. If, after I have nominated an article that either the AFD could have been withdrawn or speedied, is their any procedure for changing your position as a nominator? Hi Optigan13. Fair question. No, there really isn't a procedure beyond just changing your own opinion and stating as much on the AfD page. For speedies, let someone else add speedy to your delete. Usually, a "speedy candidate" ends up in AfD after the speedy has been declined or "hangon"-ed by the originating author. If its obvious though, the closing admin will take care of it. As for withdrawing (basically changing to keep) there have been a few times where I've been a nominator for an article that I ended up withdrawing. One that comes to mind from a while ago was Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Paola Cavalieri. Read through that to see an example of what I mean. I nominated the article on grounds of notability after I was unable to substantiate any of the claims of notability in the article. Others were able to find what I was not able to find (not sure what I was drinking ;-). The easiest way to get something "withdrawn" is to strike your nomination statement and add a statement below in the comments section apologizing profusely for slogging the community through a needless AfD. There really is no procedure, persay, that can remove the nom, especially if others agree with you by saying delete. Once it's there, it's there. I've actually seen a "withdrawn" by nominator that ended up still being deleted by consensus even though the nominator switched teams and was fighting for the keep...don't remember what it was though. On that note, if you find it happening a lot that your noms are getting withdrawn by you, you should probably recheck your criteria for sending something through AfD in the first place. You'll notice on the deletion policy page that it is quite strongly recommended, you could even say required, that you attempt to clean, source, edit, expand, improve, source, edit, clean, expand, source, and clean the article before nominating for deletion. Thanks, it basically amounts to you nominated it, you bought it. So if you started a nom, you can change your opinion just like everyone else and a snowball close might take place, but you don't own the nomination just like you don't own any pages you've worked on. Also with the speedy tag, if you didn't initially mark it as speedy, you can't accelerate it, just hope a lot of others join and it might get a snowball delete. Also looking at the afd you linked, showing your work in the form of links to searches you did helps. I actually found the articles I linked through cleanup by month, so I did try to do the cleanups, references, and generally tried to write for the enemey before I nominated it. The other thing I noticed is that cleanup seems to be a pretty generic tag for articles where generally poor article setup includes lacking sources and notability, in addition to general layout issues. -Optigan13 (talk) 04:22, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

That certainly cleared up the difference. Thanks also for the good words, I am having fun here and enjoying it very much. Even AfDs where I'm ultimately 'wrong' about notability or some other factor, I enjoy learning from. I do have one other question if you don't mind. You closed this AfD today as no consensus, which I completely agree with because the AfD was essentially a discussion back and forth. For 'odd' cases like this where it deals with an issue such as a UFO, what is a reliable source? Are there guidelines? The related article Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/UFO_sightings_in_Libya was easier because there was no 'list' and no substance but this one was harder. Is there something I could read to learn more on what to do in these cases? I'm trying to read more on WP:BAND these days as there are a huge number of bands in the backlog where I'm currently working and I hope to be able to better understand those, too. One of the things they said on User:Gwernol's page was that they were not tolerant of other religions. Now the question switches to whether or not they were saying they don't tolerate other religions, or that Gwernol doesn't. But someone, as my experience would show, usually doesn't say such a thing about someone else unless it's how they personally feel, themselves. And what else can you say to such a person other than "so sorry to hear that"? You just have to pity a person who's mind has been closed, by whatever cause, from the beauty that's in all religions, and hope for the best for them. Ok, here we go:

• Mama's Gravy. In this sense, I did close it prematurely, as there was no consensus. I would wait a few more days to see if there is any more activity in the discussion. If, at the end of say 5 days there is still no more activity, I woudl then relist it. If I still don't get any more activity at the end of that time period, I would go ahead and list it as a keep and then tag it for speedy per db-band.

• Hema Sinha. This article is poorly written and from investigating the author, it is his/her first article to Wikipedia. There hasn't been any activity in the account since May 14th, 2007. I would say that if the article didn't reach a consensus, and was relisted with no success to any more comments then the page, if a majority says keep, should be kept, and tagged for references, as the main issue in the debate is notability. I would try relisting it one or two more times before I would close the convo.

• Ridin' (Mýa song). There seems to be a consensus now in the debate, as it is 4-1 delete. I would still wait until the end of the time period for listings (which I believe is about 5 days). If at that time no other comments are made about the article, under the current conditions, I would close it as a delete (assuming I was an admin).

• Moquette. In this situation, I did close it very close to a possible argument on a non consensus, however, the discussion was 6 days old. I probably should have relisted it to see if any more comments or voting could take place and if nothing were to happen, I would still close it as a keep and tag the article for expansion to satisfy a good article length. In addition, I would tag it for references.

• Consciousness causes collapse. This one I was confused on, and wish to open it back up and relist it. The current closing consensus is 3(keep)-3(delete)-6(merge). I am not really all that comfortable with the closing numbers. I would relist it another time, since the article seems to be good on drawing feedback and comments.

I'm not sure how you can describe this as Patent nonsense. I provided usage in other documentation and comments from another developer on the actual definition. When you Google the word, you get several hits from reputable sources including the US Air Force and the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific & Technical Information. It can also be shown that this is also a derivative of parasequence another word that may not be commonly used, but is defined. However, the way in which parasequential is being applied in development is unique and necessary. It specifically deals with issues that have begun to arise in the past few years where processing and communication speeds have created a disconnect between the intended sequence of process events. (as described in the definition). So, what other information do I need to provide so that this entry can again be included. Thanks for your mediation effort

I just wanted to thank you for your mediation effort in the case of Rudget vs Malleus Fatuarum, but I'm afraid that I do feel that it's doomed. Rudget is in the right and Malleus Fatuarum has to admit that he was wrong is not a basis for any kind of a dispute resolution. Parasequential References

I wanted to tell you that I use Wikipedia frequently to debunk words. Mostly because colleges frequently misuse words and think that they are the first person to invent or discover a word. I am by no means a linguist or even a good speller, I just love language and the way people use it (even badly, like myself :-) ).

So when I initially began to research parasequential, which was being used in recent development projects to describe an increasingly pervasive situation where we deal with integration of various systems (primarily integrating older, slower systems with newer, faster systems) I thought it was a situation where certain developers were trying to sound more sophisticated than they were. Intent on debunking their use of the word, I was shocked to find less than one page of Google results for the word. Further investigation revealed that “parasequence” was indeed a legitimate word and that the usage of parasequential was indeed appropriate and somewhat unique to our circumstances. Yet still in line with the limited way it was already being used. (Government, Mathematics, etc.)

So I thought this was my chance to give back to the people I have always debunked and to give back to WikiPedia which helped me do it in each case. So if it turns out that I don’t understand the situation in which a word is accepted, then at least I know I tried in good faith.

So I’ll again thank you for you input and ask you for your continued help.

Since the initial investigation, I’ve found more references to the word. In particular the government seems to be using it to describe a “spiral” situation. For instance a book refers to “Spiral Development” of military hardware where the hardware can be deployed seemingly out of the normal development sequence. This seems to stem from very timely events where military hardware is being developed and deployed at the same time; for instance the development of better defenses and protection for our soldiers in Iraq.

So I am going to attempt to add these references, but where I could use your help is with guidance on how to properly do this, or even whether I am wasting my time or not.

Admin coaching

Hi there. I'm Dan, and you're apparently my new coach. I've been really looking forward to moving ahead with this process.

It's hard to say why I want to be an administrator, as there is no one real reason that stands out. I am fascinated by not only Wikipedia's content but the concept itself; I see Wikipedia as the future of online information (as it practically is already). I have over 4000 edits, and I feel that I have at least a basic knowledge of the policies - I've read and reread them many times. I met an admittedly random goal of giving clear, detailed opinions to 50 AfD articles (a goal that took some time to meet). I have made significant, if not major, contributions to many articles, mostly in the Arizona WikiProject or other ones that interest me. While I haven't been perfect with my edits (I think in the beginning I made some mistakes - not necessarily policy violations), I really do think I have a clear picture of where Wikipedia should be. Verifiability, not truth, is the rule. The non-negotiability of WP:NPOV. The slightly more gray area of WP:N.

If I have any negatives now, it's that I sometimes have issues with the way users (and admins) deal with certain things on Wikipedia. I feel that some people forget the goal of accurate, verifiable information dissemination, and make Wikipedia into some sort of popularity contest. I have seen long, involved arguments that really don't have much to do with the constructive progression of Wikipedia as it has to do with the individual wikipolitical agendas of specific users. It occasionally looks as if the goal of Wikipedia is to be as beaurocratic as possible. I don't really get involved with these arguments (and when I have, it inevitably doesn't work out well), but it still bothers me that I might have to do these sorts of things to become an admin, instead of just making quality contributions and demonstrating a clear understanding of Wikipedia policy.

I suppose I want to become an administrator because I feel that I can pick up the proverbial mop and help keep Wikipedia on a positive growth path. When doing vandal patrol, instead of referring users to other admins when there is a chronic issue, I could do it myself. I don't think I need to explain that it's not the 'power' I'm looking for; a comprehensive look at my vandal patrol edits would show that I warn in friendly ways, assume good faith unless it's patently obvious vandalism, and don't make things personal. Beyond vandal patrol, I see myself involved with Wikipedia for a long time to come, and I would like to be more than just a content contributer - I would like to be as much a part of it as I can.

Hello, friend! You know that I respect you, and you have asked for my opinions in the past, and you have received my frank feedback seemingly well in the past, so I am going to take a little risk here.

I wanted to ask you to please re-read the comment on my talk page from DGG that apparently you did not like earlier today. But this time, I'd like you to read it with a specific technique, which guides you to make certain assumptions that you might not have otherwise made. Written words are a very ineffective communication tool for having a conversation, because as humans we are so adept at reading non-verbal communications and nuances of the verbal communication like tone, speed, inflection of voice, etc, that when we read another persons words, like it or not, we tend to fill-in the gaps of all those other components that our brains "want", and it leads us sometimes to understand that which may not have been intended. Sometimes to the extent that we believe the exact opposite of what was said, was said. I am not saying that this is what happened, I just want to illustrate that it *could* have happened.

Here's how to do it (do in order, do not read ahead):

• First read the conversation on my talk page where another editor effectively 'high fives' me for the successful deletion of AG3 [8]
• Next, read my reply which includes the parenthetical phrase "(tongue in cheek)" [9]
• Then read DGG's response [10]
• Now ask yourself: "How did DGG likley feel about the high-fiving and jocularity he saw?"
• Now read the comment that he left me that you replied-to.[11]
• Now ask yourself: "Do I know the context of this comment?" "Do I know the history behind what he's talking about?"
• Now go read the DRV that he was referring-to Wikipedia:Deletion_review/Log/2008_February_26#David Lochhead
• Now ask yourself was I right about the context of DGG's comment?
• Now read your comment in reply to DGG's.[12]
• Now imagine that these comments all occurred in a short period of time with no intervening edits; imagine it as a conversation, if you will.
• Ask yourself, "How would DGG likely take my stating my pride about not having any deletion reviews and specifically mentioning the one I closed that he already did not like the outcome of?" and "Could he feel provoked by my comment?"
• Now read DGG's reply as 3 separate comments and imagine they were left hours apart and in different sections of my talk page:
  • "The work would be more enjoyable if it were more rational, and not a matter of gathering shifting support and going back to debating principles incessantly. In other words, if we actually had some sort of way of following precedent, so people could tell what would be accepted and what would not."
    • Imagine this was a general comment about his frustration over the deletion review I had you look at above, and how this seems to him to be a trend of more and more admins more and more frequently applying broader and broader expansion of the speedy deletion criteria. Consider that his comment has nothing at all to do with you nor your AG3 closing.
  • "As for Gore III, I decided not to take it to deletion review only because I decided that a/its not worth fighting about, and b/ it might be better to wait until some more stories about him accumulated so the article could be enlarged & improved--and also I have no desire to work (on an article) myself, on topics like this (article was on)."
    • Ask yourself "Does DGG think this article or AfD are worth fighting with me about?"
  • "Someone will restore it sooner or later (recreate the AG3 article). You should have closed again as no consensus, IMHO."
    • Ask yourself "Isn't that just a rather civil way of saying that he simply disagrees with me?"

OK that's the whole exercise. The bigger peice of work would be figuring out how you came to the conclusion that DGG does not respect you and that your collaboration is not welcome. I don't know how to do that part. Jerry talk ¤ count/logs 00:05, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

I now know exactly what you're talking about. (A full night of sleep helped). I didn't see it yesterday, and I am completely guilty of reading between lines instead of simply reading them. In my comment on your talk page, when I said I "haven't had any AfD closes brought to DRV, including AG3", I was under no circumstances trying to sound prideful, but I can see now that that is exactly how I sounded. In that context, DGG's response was no less than heroic, was not at all combative or even defensive. It was brilliant. The problem was seeded in my mind because I didn't write it as prideful and assumed no one would read it that way either. What I was attempting to say was this: "my experience on-wiki is so novel (meaning new) that I haven't even had something brought to DRV yet." Not because I'm great and wonderful, but because I'm too new at it. I was alluding to the fact that I may be of little use to the discussion (about A7) but would still like to participate. I simply don't have enough timecards punched was all I was saying. But that's not what I typed and DGGs response to my original post was not an overreaction of any kind but instead an apropo response based on my thick typing. My response to his response was exactly that though - an overreaction. Thanks, Jerry for taking the time (once again!) to dissect and "show me the light". The randomiser trick based on {{NUMBEROFEDITS:R}} is stolen from East718. 1219054380mod10 divides the constantly changing number of edits by 10 until the result is 0 (for multiples of 10) or a residual digit. Assigned to each of the possible results 0-9 is a different word to pipe my talk page. In East718's signature, the trick changes the border colour around his sig. Regarding this note you put up on the talk page of Generation Z [15] on 2 February 2008, I looked at the discussion [16] and the result was actually delete and not weak keep, and the discussion actually ended on 6 of February, four days after that notice 2 full years ago, ye gods. I assume the notice was put up mistakenly when the discussion was still ongoing. Damn, I had just nominated the article, and the link to the page that I had to create for the discussion brought me to a 2008 discussion with the result of keep. Your right here, the IP did make an edit, I did revert it (which I still stand by. He/she had some terrible grammar errors, so I reverted it), then he/she commented on my editor review. To be fair, as everyone is welcome to comment on my editor review, I cut and pasted the review (for some reason in two different edits) under yours, as you were the last to comment. Now, who are they talking about if they aren't talking about you. The whole comment has me confused. I responded on his/her talk page to not attack others, but I'm just lost right now and have been trying to figure out what they are saying, with no success. I just logged back on and saw what has been going on. I will agree that maybe I was a little off yesterday in my opinion of the direction of the comment, and I will let it go.
