Alkermes (company) article

Dear January,

This article, which I contributed to, has a "close paraphrasing" template on it. I made changes to address that concern and, I believe, have eliminated any problems. Could you possibly look over the article and let me know if my changes have been sufficient to warrant removal of the template? Thanks!Michael Leeman (talk) 20:58, 6 March 2012 (UTC)

I'll take a look in the next day or so. January (talk) 12:11, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

That blog is in no way a reliable source, and I can't imagine a frivolous poll in a lad's mag being considered a suitable source for a BLP either. January (talk) 17:56, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
That's fair enough. I was looking for media uses of the phrase as part of a paper to do with the standards and ethics of coinings of words and phrases for modern concepts; particularly for the OED. It just struck me that the subject of the article accounted for the lion's share of the media usage of that phrase, and then considered that in light of the editing guidelines (Iain Duncan Smith, and the way in which his name should be used in his article is a notable example of the angle I saw this from). Apologies, my view of what constitutes a reliable source has been altered a bit by studying a subject which does actually give credence to blogs and lads mags, ha ha. Thanks for responding, if anything you've at least made me read the reliable sources stuff.

Your HighBeam account is ready!

Good news! You now have access to 80 million articles in 6500 publications through HighBeam Research. Here's what you need to know:

  • Your account activation code has been emailed to your Wikipedia email address.
    • Only 407 of 444 codes were successfully delivered; most failed because email was simply not set up (You can set it in Special:Preferences).
    • If you did not receive a code but were on the approved list, add your name to this section and we'll try again.
  • The 1-year, free period begins when you enter the code.
  • To activate your account: 1) Go to http://www.highbeam.com/prof1; 2) You’ll see the first page of a two-page registration. 3) Put in an email address and set up a password. (Use a different email address if you signed up for a free trial previously); 4) Click “Continue” to reach the second page of registration; 5) Input your basic information; 6) Input the activation code; 7) Click “Finish”. Note that the activation codes are one-time use only and are case-sensitive.
  • If you need assistance, email "help at highbeam dot com", and include "HighBeam/Wikipedia" in the subject line. Or go to WP:HighBeam/Support, or ask User:Ocaasi. Please, per HighBeam's request, do not call the toll-free number for assistance with registration.
  • A quick reminder about using the account: 1) try it out; 2) provide original citation information, in addition to linking to a HighBeam article; 3) avoid bare links to non-free HighBeam pages; 4) note "(subscription required)" in the citation, where appropriate
  • HighBeam would love to hear feedback at WP:HighBeam/Experiences
  • Show off your HighBeam access by placing {{User:Ocaasi/highbeam_userbox}} on your userpage
  • When the 1-year period is up, check applications page to see if renewal is possible. We hope it will be.

Sunsanahut

Dear User:January, thanks very much indeed for setting me aright regarding the yet to be released film 'Sunsanahut', and for your suggestion that we instead consider it for proposed Deletion/discussion. I would very much appreciate your feedback on the talk page, as I have proposed the article for deletion. Thanks, regs, Khani100 (talk) 13:24, 15 April 2012 (UTC)Khani100

Proposed deletion doesn't really need a talk page discussion - you've applied the PROD, so now it's just a case of waiting a week to see if anyone disagrees. January (talk) 16:19, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi January,

Thank you so much for adding a more recent and much better photograph to our article on Michael Eric Dyson. I badly need to get back to expanding that BLP, but I've got a lot on my plate right now. Could you please have a look at this edit to Dr. Dyson's biography by User:Ordy654139? Doesn't look like a productive contributor to me.

Best wishes – DracoE 21:52, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

It was a pleasure, finding free images is something I've recently got into. Ordy654139 may well be a throwaway WP:VOA, they made a couple of edits over a ten-minute period then disappeared. I warned them anyway; if they do start using that account again it'll be blocked soon enough if they keep editing like that. I deleted the sandbox as an attack page (I'm sure their critique of The Beatles was never going to make an article!). January (talk) 08:14, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Thank you for that. WP:VOA – I wasn't aware of that acronym yet :) Wow, you did upload a lot of great pictures to Commons! If you ever come across some nice photographs of platform shoes, please take pity on our article. It's illustrated with some of the ugliest pictures on the web. I've got a bit of a weak spot for cool shoes (early Quilicis – *swoon*), but my current camera is not up to the job, and I no longer own any indoor lighting equipment.
May I also ask you a question about copyvios? I usually delete them on sight. See Pantha du Prince, Bruce Gilbert, Klee Irwin, JD & The Straight Shot. (The latter looks like a project by James L. Dolan, though the infobox is currently lacking a direct link to Dolan's main biography.) Is that the correct way of doing things, or should I have reported them to WP:CP first? Best wishes – DracoE 17:54, 29 April 2012 (UTC)
I'll keep an eye out. I see what you mean, a couple of those are not very elegant! There's a picture at Commons of some Vivienne Westwood platforms (the ones Naomi Campbell tripped over in) which may be of use (File:Vivienne Westwood Naomi Campbell shoes.jpg)?
On the copyvios, it's fine to remove blatant ones immediately, I sometimes do the same. WP:CP can always be used if you feel you need a second pair of eyes. January (talk) 17:51, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

A brownie for you!

Thanks for adding not one but two images at Chen Guangcheng, an article which badly needed one. Khazar2 (talk) 19:38, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
My pleasure. (There are more in the Commons category if needed.) January (talk) 19:18, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Block

Hi, I'd recommend a block for this IP. The disruptions have been going on for a long time. Thanks Span (talk) 15:47, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I agree, the only thing that's stopping me is that I'm wondering how WP:INVOLVED I am, given how many of their edits I've reverted. My inclination at the moment is to take it back to WP:ANI and recommend a WP:COMPETENCE block if they don't respond to my last-ditch attempt to communicate. January (talk) 16:29, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
Sounds wise. I'll leave it with you. 18:00, 28 April 2012 (UTC)
I've taken it back to WP:ANI after yet another dubious edit. January (talk) 18:19, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
A quick note to say thanks to you and Spanglej for your vigilance with this IP. These are often more frustrating than outright vandals as many of their entries fly under the radar. Your vigilance is much appreciated. Of course, the biggest mistake they made is not knowing that sleeping is something that everyone does. It napping that is the hobby and I may just go and indulge in it right now :-) Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 20:36, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Marnette - and I completely agree, this was far more frustrating than any blatant vandal I've come across. January (talk) 16:52, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Thanks for fixing the Trond Bråthen move. I would've done that, but at the time I didn't want to confuse the user (who is very new) with a redirected or blanked sandbox. In hindsight I should've anyway. Need sleep. Thanks again :) Equazcion (talk) 09:07, 20 May 2012 (UTC)

Nigel Farage's quotes

Re your reversion, you state that there is a Wikiquote article on him. What do you think of having a Quotes section with a note pointing at Wikiquote? If you agree, just go ahead and add it. Once that is done, we can then point IPs there should more quotes get added. I'm prepared to semi-protect the article if necessary. Mjroots (talk) 11:33, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I added {{Wikiquote}} to the external links. The section was a copy of the Wikiquote article (technically a copyvio as it was copied without attribution) so the IP editor is already aware of it. January (talk) 14:58, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
OK, I'll know if the IP re-adds and will take the necessary action. Mjroots (talk) 15:39, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

First of all thanks for the information about rebel poster i have placed in the Rebel (film) article but you have added the template stating that this is not a film poster.Actually this is the first look of the rebel film.I found this poster on internet from teluguone.com and i have added the url of that website in the source of the Rebel poster.jpg file page and the website stated that this is the first look of the rebel film so please check it out sir.If you have satisfied with my point of view and you believe this is a film poster then please remove the template in the Rebel poster.jpg file page sir. Please post a message to my user talk page.Thanking you.Have a good day.Raghusri (Talk) Raghusri 10:40, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

It's still not a poster, just a photograph of one of the cast. By a film poster we generally mean something like this: File:HLposterUSA2.jpg. January (talk) 11:51, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Why have you deleted the David Steen photo of Twiggy? It was supplied by him specifically for this article?--Shylock's Boy (talk) 00:00, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

There was no indication of that on the description page, it was tagged {{pd-self}} which should only be used on images where the uploader is the copyright holder. However it's not sufficient to have permission to use it only in one particular article, it would need to be released under a suitable licence such as CC-BY-SA, which permits commercial re-use and modification. If Mr Steen is willing to do this, please ask him to confirm permission through OTRS following the process described in WP:Donating copyrighted materials. The image can be restored once permission is confirmed. January (talk) 06:10, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Do I need to do anything about the tag you put on the image I uploaded?

Hi January!

I just noticed the tag you put on the image I uploaded here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Neil_L_Whitehead.jpg . I'm a bit of a newby to wiki editing (and especially when it comes to images) and I just wondered if you could explain the tag and - more importantly - if it means that I need to do anything?

With all best, and thanks,

Loriski (talk) 15:34, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

I noticed you uploaded a second version of the image, the tag is just to request that the first version is deleted from the history. The non-free content criteria (specifically point 7) requires that all non-free images are used in at least one article, so any older versions which are not being used should be deleted. You don't need to do anything, an administrator will take care of it in about a week's time. January (talk) 15:51, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Oh brilliant! Thank you very much for explaining! Loriski (talk) 15:54, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of Waldo Canyon.jpg

Hello, I'm not sure how to quite "redirect" you to my english wikipedia talk page, but if you could respond there I would be more likely to give you any timely respond to any questions regarding this image. However, 1st please take a look at the comments for the picture nomination. I gave concise details regarding the time that I took the picture. 2nd, I am becoming quite upset when I cannot post a picture of my own work to Wikipedia for the betterment of all of the readers/editors. This is because an individual on Twitter, by the name of Patrick Sandusky I believe, has been given full credit for my picture. I am trying to make Wikipedia a better place in general for all users. When I gave this picture to news stations, I never thought that a big news outlet like YAHOO! would give Mr. Sandusky the credit and thus repute all of my work. It's not even the part of someone else taking credit for my photo that bothers me the most. What bothers me is that during this long process of the fires, my house burned to the ground. So while an individual like Mr. Sandusky takes credit for my work that kind of bothers me because I lost my house and just about everything else. In fact the only thing I have to my name is a couple checkbooks, my car and the camera and lens I took this photo with. So to claim that my work is "dubious" is completely biased and not logical just because I made a mistake with a prior picture. I made the Semyon Varlamov picture file in good faith with the author's permission but accidentally uploaded it as my own work. That was clearly my fault and it should have been deleted. However, since you are dead set on deleting this picture I encourage you to do what you need to. Given my circumstances, I cannot afford legal fee's to file a cease and desist order against Yahoo! or Mr. Sandusky. I guess I will have to just take this one and know that I originally took the picture but lost credibility due to my financial and housing situation because of a fire that actually affected me. As for Mr. Sandusky, I can only hope that this credit of notability helps him in his efforts. Good day to you and happy deleting! Hi, could you help me with something regarding the edit you did to my page. You've marked the information as unsourced and more than a few skaters can do the backflip. I take your point about the latter, but I would still like to add the skill to his page in some way as I do think it's relevant. In relation to sourcing I have photographs of him doing one. Would that count as a source? I'm new to this so I'm sorry if this is a simple question. If the photograph isn't an acceptable source, could you give me an indication of what would be so that I can attempt to get it right. Thanks. --Karendawes (talk) 22:08, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Basically it needs a reliable source that has previously been published, so if it's been mentioned in an article about him published by a media organisation that should be acceptable. I don't think a photo is suitable as that would require original research, ie someone would have to interpret the photo to determine that he is performing a backflip in it. Can you help me?

Hi, you've helped me before and I wondered if you could again. Someone has merged my page with another and I dispute the reason for that being done. The person has cited "lack of notoriety as an ice skater" and I really don't believe that to be the case. Colin Ratushniak (the name of my page) was runner up in Dancing on Ice 2011, has appeared in Holiday on Ice and is about to appear in Kyran Bracken's Ice party in November. he has a significant following on Twitter and is known well within the professional ice skating arena. I don't know how to get this page back up and running in its own right. Can you advise me what to do? Karendawes (talk) 07:38, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:TinkerBellSOTW.png)

Thanks for uploading File:TinkerBellSOTW.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

deleted page File:GENESIS (Software) Diagram 2005.png

Hello January:

So I am a new wiki user and I am just confused about its deletion. It was tagged as not having a license and I then added the following information:
Digital Peer Publishing License
Any party may pass on this Work by electronic means and make it available for download under the terms and conditions of the Digital Peer Publishing License. The text of the license may be accessed and retrieved via Internet (here): http://www.dipp.nrw.de/lizenzen/dppl/dppl/DPPL_v2_en_06-2004.html
Why was it still deleted?
This image is from a scientific article meant for dissemination through the internet. How can I upload it without deletion? Dive7 0 (talk) 17:33, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Wikipedia only accepts licences which allow commercial reuse and derivative works (see WP:ICT#Guidelines). This licence has two restrictions which make it unsuitable for Wikipedia; firstly "The rights to use in physical form ... are retained by the author" is a restriction on reuse as the image cannot be used in print, so for example this would prevent it being used in Wikipedia:Books. Secondly, "The licence does not grant a right to use altered versions of the work" is a restriction on derivative works. January (talk) 19:29, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

Photos from Flckr

Hi there - I saw you deleted this photo and I wanted to see if you could clarify what photos can be used from Flckr as I honestly thought it was okay to upload since it has a Creative Commons 2.0 license. Can you explain so I know for future uploads? Also wondering if this could be uploaded via non-free standards with appropriate rationale. Thanks for your help! Kelly Marie 0812 (talk) 02:56, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

The licence at Flickr was the non-commercial variant of the CC licence, which is not considered free for Wikipedia purposes (explanation here), WP:FLICKR lists the Flickr licences which are allowed and disallowed. Additionally, a Flickr licence is only valid if the Flickr user is the owner of the images, and this Flickr channel appears to be a fan's collection of promotional images which were probably uploaded there in violation of copyright.
Promotional images of fictional characters can meet fair use requirements in an article about the character, but the article already had one and it's questionable whether two could be justified. Also WP:NFCC requires that non-free images are correctly attributed to the original source/author so it would be advisable to use images from more trustworthy sources. January (talk) 05:00, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for that link that is very helpful. I was reading "share alike" and assuming it was the same as the acceptable version. I will bookmark that page - thanks again! Kelly Marie 0812 (talk) 05:18, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

It looks self-published to me. If you dtill disagree I can take it up at WP:RSN. January (talk) 17:39, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

For now, I am removing the reference. Are you asking me to add details like Author, Published date etc. ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ak47art (talkcontribs) 17:44, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

No, that material should not be restored at all if all it can be cited to is that reference. January (talk) 17:48, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Okay, Can you clear little bit more ? What actually was wrong ? The content or The reference ? and Please tell the reason too and the steps should be taken in the future to omit this conflict. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ak47art (talkcontribs) 17:52, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Both, as the content is not supported by a suitable reference. Per WP:BLP, articles on living persons require a high standard of sourcing, particularly for anything related to a controversy. Also it is WP:UNDUE to have almost the entire article consisting of a controversy section. I'm going to request some advice on the article as it's had problems before, I would appreciate it if you would not restore the material in the meantime. January (talk) 17:58, 24 November 2012 (UTC)

Ankit Fadia

<Attack on BLP subject removed>

Please consider deleting the Ankit Fadia article.

Mongo Feels Better (talk) 21:25, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, nothing I can do about that. The criteria for being the subject of a Wikipedia article is notability, not merit, and the community has already agreed that the subject is notable (Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Ankit Fadia). January (talk) 21:59, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Your reverts of the Ankit Fadia article state that you're "removing material not supported by sources or cited to unreliable sources" So with that, there are 1741 mentions of Chennai Online, do you plan on deleting those passages in Wikipedia articles mentioning Chennai Online as a source?

Granted there are one mention of Wendy McAuliffe and its in the Ankit Fadia article but there are 35,700 results for "Wendy McAuliffe" ZDNet in Google, and at her current venture about page http://www.populatedigital.com/people/ mentions "Wendy began her career as a journalist for ZDNet, the UK’s leading online technology newswire, during which time she became a leading authority in online privacy and child protection online." so that's another unreliable sources?!?

Surely an article about Ankit Fadia by Suelette Dreyfus is a reliable source, but you nixed that too.

<BLP violation removed> Mongo Feels Better (talk) 10:24, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

You added, "For example, according to Wendy McAuliffe at ZDNet UK, Fadia's Hacking Truths website was judged "second best hacking site" by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, though no ranked list of "hacking sites" has ever been published by the FBI" cited to [2]. That article says "It was recently judged the second best hacking site in the world by the FBI." It does not say that no ranked list of "hacking sites" has ever been published by the FBI. For Chennai Online, you added "In 2000, Chennai Online reported that Fadia's consulting clients included several of the largest technology and financial services companies in the world. No other online or printed source corroborates that report". Chennai Online says "Fadia provides customised cyber security training and consulting solutions to an impressive list of clients all across North America, Asia, Australia, and the Middle East," so what is "No other online or printed source corroborates that report" sourced too? The Suelette Dreyfus article is cited as a source for "nor does any of Fadia's published up that date work involve cryptography or cryptanalysis" but doesn't say that anywhere. [3]. As for your readdition of Attrition.org, Wikipedia's own article on it says it is self-published.January (talk) 10:43, 1 December 2012 (UTC)
The part about the timing of the Avril Lavigne incident is original research, as pretty much all of your additions appear to be. January (talk) 10:52, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

So for ANY of this information above to be included in this article about Ankit Fadia, it has to be written up in a major publication where another writer has researched this and published? Seriously?!?

<BLP violation removed>

Mongo Feels Better (talk) 04:09, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

"So for ANY of this information above to be included in this article about Ankit Fadia, it has to be written up in a major publication where another writer has researched this and published?" Yes, that's exactly what no original research means.
This is the third time I've had to redact part of your post, so I think you'd best stop posting on my talk page if you can't do it within policy. If you really want to continue this conversation you can e-mail me, although we're obviously not going to resolve this to your satisfaction, if the article looked the way you want it would violate multiple Wikipedia policies. Basically, this is just not the right place for what you're looking to do here. January (talk) 06:42, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

OK then, get used to redacting your page, and your edits, I've got plenty of time, resources, and IP's

Joseph Rescigno.jpg

RE: The Wikipedia page "User talk:Valuenyc" has been changed on 24 November 2012 by January, with the edit summary: Notification: tagging for deletion of File:Joseph Rescigno.jpg.

I am completely confused about process here and about license tagging and I really spent a long time trying to figure it out from the help files. I hope I clicked the right link to address the person who questioned this, and I'll be very grateful for any advice/guidance.

The photo in question is owned by the subject, Joseph Rescigno. However, it has a *credit line* for use by anyone who re-uses it. I thought it was always courteous to include the name of the photographer even though the subject bought and paid for ownership of the photo. Please point me to whatever language I should use. I'll be happy to adjust it. If it means that the photographer gets no recognition, I'm very surprised but I'll do it. That is within my power. Is that creating this issue?

Many many thanks, Valuenyc

The licence tag and the credit line are fine, we just need confirmation from the copyright holder that they have agreed to release the image with that licence (this is the usual practice when the image is uploaded by someone other than the copyright holder). This is usually the photographer, but if it is a work for hire it may be that Mr Rescigno owns the rights. The copyright holder should contact permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to confirm permission, there is a suggested wording at WP:CONSENT which can be used. January (talk) 20:33, 1 December 2012 (UTC)

File:Introspective (Pet Shop Boys album).jpg

Are you certain that the current version that you uploaded is exactly a true representation of Introspective? Maybe you do not notice, but the yellow and the green were brighter than the current one, the background looked like a fabric instead of glossy, and the lines were obviously seen instead of invisible. What do you think? --George Ho (talk) 20:51, 8 December 2012 (UTC)

Interesting – according to the article there have been two re-releases which could have had slightly different colours. I just uploaded the version that was deleted from Commons (it had been in the article since May 2010 without being challenged). However, photos of vinyl versions have a different colour arrangement, with the red stripe in the centre [4][5], so it seems that was the original cover – if that is the case a decent quality version of that cover would probably be the ideal. January (talk) 23:18, 8 December 2012 (UTC)
I've uploaded the better version of actual CD cover. --George Ho (talk) 23:46, 10 December 2012 (UTC)

In case you notice that I have restored File:Tuzkoy Denizli.jpg. We both got the wrong end of the stick. The alleged copyvio source in fact consists of images hot-linked from Wikipedia or Commons. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 13:27, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for February 3

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Andrew Cahn, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Nomura (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Orphaned non-free media (File:VivaColombia Airlines Logo.png)

Thanks for uploading File:VivaColombia Airlines Logo.png.

Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:46, 12 February 2013 (UTC)

Jessica Ennis

Hi January,

Do you have the authority to add protection to the Jessica Ennis page to stop this persistent and very annoying vandalism?

Kopii90 (talk) 11:09, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

I do, but I don't think it would be the best course of action in this instance as it's coming from one IP. I'll block the IP if they vandalise again. January (talk) 11:15, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Shadow_Hand

Hi, I've recently been trying to update the images on the Shadow_Hand page, but don't seem to be able to comply with the guidelines. I first added two images on a non-free license, next in response to feedback that there was no reason that a free image could not be created, I created free versions of the images (I first tried to update the existing images but the copyright section of the page didn't seem to reflect my updates).

I then got another message saying there was no proof that the image was licensed under CC-SA so I used the template to send a consent email (I work for the company that created the images).

Finally all images have been removed, and the free image I uploaded the second time around was tagged with the following:

16:28, 1 March 2013 Diannaa (talk | contribs) deleted page File:Shadow hand and human hand size comparison.jpg (F1: Redundant copy of non-Commons file in the same file format: File:Shadow Robot Hand and Human Hand Size Comparison, Black and White.jpg)

I don't quite understand why they were both deleted, once the original non free version was removed, the second free image was no longer redundant.

Apologies for the long post, if you could help me comply with the regulations in order to get the images up onto the page it would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Ajpether (talk) 06:27, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Sorry for taking a while to reply. I see Diannaa has already answered your question on the deleted file. If you haven't received a response to your e-mail confirming permission, I would suggest asking at Wikipedia:OTRS noticeboard‎ if they can confirm your e-mail has been received and if there's any problem with it. I don't understand why you deleted the artical Template:Chris Wiltrout — Preceding unsigned comment added by ChrisWiltroutzzz (talkcontribs) 19:55, 29 March 2013 (UTC)

Fadia edit undo

Regarding the edit on Apr 6, 2013 for the Fadia page; while I added the link, the citations in question are authored by a small team on the web site, to which I contribute. Further, while I appreciate the policy, the material has been published for some time and has not been found to contain errors. Parts of it have been validated externally as well, although we do not publish that. Please reconsider adding, and feel free to verify the accuracy of the references. Thank you. Jericho347 (talk) 23:11, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

The material having being published for some time does not change the fact that this is a self-published source and therefore completely unacceptable for a BLP.
Since you mention that you are involved with attrition.org, you may have a conflict of interest and should therefore exercise particular caution if you are considering linking to the site in any article, or editing Attrition (website) - please see Wikipedia:Conflict of Interest for the relevant guideline. January (talk) 07:18, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Understood. Do you my point though? For example, there was something factually incorrect, and not sourced at all on one page referring to me specifically. That should not be allowed to stand for years without citation. If I provide a link, self published or otherwise, that is marginally better (but understandably not ideal), it should be allowed as long as it is properly disclaimed. Reading through the policies, I understand them and largely agree. Some are up for interpretation or debate though. Many in my field consider me to be an expert on detecting plagiarism due to my work with Attrition (website). Per the referencing policy, "However, if an author is an established expert with a previous record of third-party publications on a topic, their self-published work may be considered reliable for that topic, though third-party publications are still preferable." I don't know if I am an expert, as I detest that term largely due to over-use. But if public perception says I am, then it seems self-published work could be considered valid for example.
Anyway, feel free to look at my edits. You will see that one addition to the Attrition (website) page was 'negative' in the sense it made us look bad, which was the intention of the person who made the original edit <redacted>. That was a clear case of a conflict of interest, but we did not edit the page to avoid problems with policy here. My only goal with having an account is to correct inaccurate material, and provide citations when possible for any topic. That is something I have been preaching about in InfoSec, as many researchers and authors do a horrible job of it. Jericho347 (talk) 22:36, 7 April 2013 (UTC)
Removing unsourced information about yourself is fine, but additions cited to your own website are potentially more controversial. Regarding the part of the policy you quote, there is an exception for WP:Biographies of living people - per WP:SPS,"Never use self-published sources as third-party sources about living people, even if the author is an expert, well-known professional researcher, or writer.", which rules out the site as a source for Fadia. Please also be careful about WP:OUTING - this is a policy that is applied very strictly on Wikipedia. January (talk) 07:13, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

The Lifeboat Foundation deletion

Hi,

Could you explain why Lifeboat Foundation was deleted? I was just invited to join them as adviser, and was surprised there seems to be very little information about them.

This is what I could find:

- Quora
- Their website

I would like to recreate the article.

Could you please get back to me at ron.gross@gmail.com?

Thanks in advance, Ron Ripper234 (talk) 13:57, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

The article was originally deleted in 2011 as a result of the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lifeboat Foundation. (The version I deleted in 2012 was just a misplaced comment on the previous deletion.) January (talk) 18:15, 12 April 2013 (UTC)

Thomas Fanshawe, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe

If Thomas Fanshawe, 2nd Viscount Fanshawe is a copy-and-paste copyvio, it's not from the listed source. There are spots where the paraphrasing gets a bit close but not enough to warrant deletion as a copyright violation. The quote from Fanshawe's speech is of course in the public domain. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 21:43, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Charles Fanshawe, 4th Viscount Fanshawe

Please see Talk:Charles Fanshawe, 4th Viscount Fanshawe regarding this copy-and-paste article and its rewrite. Since the evidence of copy-and-paste and the rewrite are both available there is no need to wait a full 5 days before closing this copyright investigation.

All submissions by the contributor need to be checked for copyright violations. If a substantial number are found to be copyright violations, it may be necessary to treat all articles created by him and all "large block contributions" inserted by him that "seem" like they were written professionally or for a different audience as if they are suspected copyright violations. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 20:45, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

You are welcome, and thanks for wielding the mop. I think we can consider this editor "on notice" when it comes to copyright issues. Too bad the book (and its companion web site) he's using as a major source hasn't (as far as I know) been released under a "free" license. Unfortunately, it probably can't be because it quotes heavily from early-20th-century but still-likely-under-copyright sources. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs)/(e-mail) 20:53, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
