Byron Nelson High School

You keep trying to censor the page about Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Park, Texas. I inserted a link to a local newspaper article. The article was in no way libelous. 70.225.170.148 (talk) 18:18, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

I reverted you once (other users have also been reverting you). The edit I reverted had no sources. Cassandra 73 talk 18:29, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Deleted one of your edits

Just didn't want you to be alarmed, but since you didn't revert far enough back in your first edit in the article you sent to RFPP, I had to delete one of your edits along with the vandalism. You did nothing wrong, so didn't want you to be surprised when you couldn't see one of your own edits :) Courcelles 20:38, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

No problem (I've had that happen before). Actually that article could do with some more RevDels, there are two edits from August even worse than the ones you've already deleted. January (Cassandra 73) talk 21:30, 24 September 2010 (UTC)
Well, yeah. Thanks, deleted. I hate using that tool because is basically screams on watchlists/logs "Bad edits here!", but with the semi-protect, it shouldn't be a problem. Courcelles 21:40, 24 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I just reviewed and approved your hook for the DYK page. I just wanted to say that in future, you don't have to give so many explanations about your hook. Just list your alt suggestions and the reviewer will look up the references. Whether it's an online or offline source doesn't matter, and if the hook combines two sources, we'll figure that one out, too. Best, Yoninah (talk) 00:22, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Yes sorry about the confusion, I started changing and adding to the nom after I found another source and did some more work on the article. Should have left the nom, the first version was fine! January (Cassandra 73) talk 06:47, 11 October 2010 (UTC)

Block evading user

I see that in this edit you gave the edit summary "Rm edit by block-evading user". I had already suspected that this account might be a block-evading sockpuppet, but I did not know of what other account. Can you tell me either what other account(s) this editor has used, or what evidence there is, or both? This information would be very useful to me. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:27, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Pretty sure this user was blocked yesterday as Worrylabeler (talk · contribs), although that's probably another sock (I don't know who though, I hadn't seen this pattern before today). It was this edit [1], the similarity of these edits [2][3] and Whommighter's first edit being to User talk:Materialscientist who blocked Worrylabeler that drew me to that conclusion. January talk 11:43, 13 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks a lot. It is now perfectly clear that User:Readysoaper, User:Worrylabeler and User:Whommighter are the same person, and fairly clear that there was at least one account other before those, but not clear what. JamesBWatson (talk) 11:59, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Paul Stretford article

Hi, I noticed that you redirected the Paul Stretford article to Wayne Rooney. I think this was hasty - certainly his old company's most famous client was Rooney, but a google news search offers articles that are about the company and indeed about Stretford himself. I'm aware that notability isn't inherited, but I think this redirect would have been better off being discussed first. Cheers. Dylanfromthenorth (talk) 09:29, 20 October 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. Basically after reverting some vandalism on the article yesterday which was how I came by it, it was still a negative BLP tagged for neutrality and undue weight and I didn't want to leave it like that. I probably should have squeezed WP:BIO1E/WP:BLP1E into my edit summary as that was part of my reason. I thought redirecting would be uncontroversial since there was nothing useful in the article that wasn't in Rooney's, but now I know it isn't I've restored an earlier version of the article from before the edits that prompted it to be tagged. Hi January - I could do with some advice on Featureworld? I am afraid I am all at sea with Wiki. However, I do write for every national newspaper and magazine in the UK and despite this, write under my own name - one paper even has it's own page for me. RE: Resources - there are thousands if you google me. Perhaps I should call this page my name rather than my company. Do let me know what you think. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alicss (talkcontribs) 01:56, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello. Regarding eligibility, WP:BASIC sets out the essential criteria and WP:CREATIVE specific criteria applicable to creative professionals. Essentially what is required is independent secondary coverage, examples of your work would not count towards this. A paper you write for having a page about you would not likely satisfy this criteria either, since this is not independent.
In general, creating an article about oneself is strongly discouraged - WP:AUTO sets out the reasons, and WP:YOURSELF the potential pitfalls. If you do proceed, please be aware that it will edited by others so you will not have control over the content of the article. Best, January (talk) 12:57, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi again - I do feel the sheer number of articles I've written and the amount of interviewees whose stories I place time and again should count for something. I am an unusual journalist in that I am not a self puffing kind of person trying to get publicity about myself but a journalist with a conscience who truly puts the ordinary person first and really does do her utmost to help people. Obviously if a paper - the biggest national paper in the UK - has a homepage about one journalist - someone who is independent, as I don't work for them, then that must count for something. You would have to ask yourself why they would have a home page about someone who is ultimately just a freelancer. I have also been independently nominated as one of the top five best read journalists on the internet (http://www.accessinterviews.com/page/awards) Featureworld is ultimately me! as despite this enormous turnover of stories I don't have anyone else working for me. This is because I like to give interviewees a personal service and ensure they are never misquoted or treated poorly. Also Wiki cites many of my articles in sources for some of its pages - some of those pages are about stories that were only mine. As my company is not some huge conglomerate do you think I should just put myself forward as a journalist? Because I feel this article is about to be deleted by you, I have put a stub forward for consideration. Alison —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.97.43.219 (talk) 20:21, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

But you are going to delete Featureworld... :( —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.97.43.219 (talk) 21:52, 29 November 2010 (UTC)

I proposed the article for deletion, if this is not contested it will be deleted 1 week after I proposed it (Friday). OTR Gateway Quarter

Hello, I cleaned up the OTR Gateway Quarter geography section at the temp page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:OTR_Gateway_Quarter/Temp

Thanks for helping since I'm new at this. OTRcincy (talk) 09:00, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

That's just a shorter extract from the same source. Changing the order of the words slightly is a close paraphrase, which is still a copyright violation. I also noticed the posters you have uploaded to Commons, do you have permission to use them? January (talk) 09:12, 19 December 2010 (UTC)
Ah, ok. I'll rewrite it all in my own voice...I think I saw something about "encyclopedic" voice so I'll check it out. Yes, I have permission to use them. They are posters for past events created for public distribution. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks!

Creator of the OTR Gateway Quarter article (talk) 07:27, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

You may have seen by now that they've been deleted on Commons, because you uploaded them either as your own work or released under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 licence which the sources did not specify they were released under. I would suggest you seek guidance at Commons:Help desk before making any further uploads. January (talk) 13:47, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

I'd like to expand on that, I wasn't really a natural writer but I think I've improved since I've been here so I hope I can continue. I've noticed a few admins comment that they don't have as much time as they'd like for article work since getting the mop, so making sure I've got some in before RFA would be good. I think one of the reasons I haven't rushed into RFA is that I can already think of more I'd do here if I had time. January (talk) 13:51, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Oxford Development COI

Please help me keep an eye on Oxford Development where there is an obvious COI editor, who has been reverted. I put a COI problem welcome on the user talk page, but perhaps there is more to the situation than I have seen. --DThomsen8 (talk) 13:20, 5 January 2011 (UTC)

Will do, I see some COI edits were made a couple of weeks after I removed an {{advert}} tag which someone's since reverted. That version had been cleaned up and the tone seems OK, although still badly needs sources. User:Oxforddevelopment is a violation of WP:ORGNAME, this can be reported to WP:UAA if they edit again (hasn't edited since November so it may be considered stale now). Hi January,

You keep deleting the link on my name to my personal website (Steve Coleman), on the wiki page On The Ropes 2011. This is not spam and is relevent to my name and reputation as an actor.

Thank you

Steve —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.147.186.125 (talk) 19:19, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

External links need to be directly related to the subject of the article, which is the film in this instance. However having just had a look at your contributions, I notice there's an article on you, it's an acceptable link in this article where you are the subject, so I've added it there and wikilinked On the Ropes (2011 film) to it.
I should point out that Wikipedia discourages editing articles about yourself or linking to your own website - please see WP:AUTO. Wikipedia also requires content to be sourced, the content you've added appears mostly unsourced and could be challenged at any time. January (talk) 20:01, 18 January 2011 (UTC)

Copyright questions

The more I learn about copyright, the more I realize I don't know. I see that the http://www.pamelaevans.org.uk/biog.php page has changed their license form one not acceptable CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 (I understand that part) to CC SA 3.0 unported. What I'm not following is why a GFDL is also required, and why it is relevant whether the contributor tot he article is the same person as the copyright holder of the source. I did read GDFL. One phrase that jumped out at me was "the GFDL is not compatible with the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license", so I'm unclear why we would be requesting incompatible licenses. I'm sure there is an answer, but I'm not seeing it. I assume that GFDL adds something that CC SA 3.0 does not deliver, but if it is explained at GDFL, I didn't see it. Sorry in advance for the questions, but I want to do more work in the copyright area, so I need to get up to speed on the issues.--SPhilbrickT 00:59, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Looking at this again, I may have been incorrect in thinking GFDL is also required in this instance. The significance of whether the contributor is the copyright holder is from WP:DCM#What it means to donate material to Wikipedia, based on Wikimedia:Terms of Use (although it doesn't explain why). Since Pamela Evans is the copyright holder and the contributor is obviously not her, changing to the CC BY-SA licence looks sufficient but I'll get a second opinion. January (talk) 17:39, 16 March 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for following up on that question. You won't be surprised to hear that Moonriddengirl is my go to expert as well. Frankly, I didn't follow her explanation of why it is required in some circumstances, but I'll go back and reread, and for the present case, I'm happy. Now I'll just urge the editor to work on the other issues.--SPhilbrickT 13:05, 17 March 2011 (UTC)

I see no problem with using her full name, which is freely available to anybody who uses the reference provided in the same article to look up births. See discussion page surrounding Elisabeth Sladen who died recently. Apparently she lied about her age, and official birth records were used to settle the argument, not media sources. Possible reference issue

I was wondering if you could give me some help on this. At White dress of Marilyn Monroe(Background and history), which has been approved for a "DYK" on June 18th, there is the following sentence...

According to Hollywood Costume: Glamour! Glitter! Romance! by Dale McConathy and Diana Vreeland, Travilla did not design the dress but actually bought it off the rack (although the costume designer always denied this claim).[1]

I have adjusted the word-choices so it no longer is so similar to the Golden Hollywood Era text but the reference still implies that this is information directly from the book, but is actually to an anonymous blog/essay that paraphrases the McConathy/Vreeland book with the following statement:

It is reported in Hollywood Costume: Glamour, Glitter, Romance! By Dale McConathy and Diana Vreeland that the dress was bought off the rack which William vehemently denies.

So..what to do? I would like to find a copy to see *exactly* what the authors said about Travilla but the book is apparently rather hard to find and expensive to buy. It is not carried by the local county library system (I do not know if it is available through Inter-Library Loan) and it is not available online. Thanks in advance for any ideas/help/advice/etc.. Shearonink (talk) 18:12, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

To be honest I'm struggling to think of another solution other than obtaining the book, mainly because I'm inclined to think it would be the only reliable source for this claim. The current source is difficult to work with as it doesn't give any context or say what the book is basing this claim on. "According to Golden Hollywood Era McConathy and Vreeland's book stated" seems messy and reiterates what I think is the problem, that the information is third-hand and the only source we've actually seen for the claim is probably not a reliable one.
WorldCat showed quite a few copies in UK libraries so I've put in an enquiry here, I'd be interested to see what it says. January (talk) 09:24, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
You're right, this book is the only source I've seen that makes this assertion and what makes it worse is the third-hand sourcing you mention (and that third-hand claim is repeated endlessly throughout the Internet. Finding it through a library sounds wonderful, I'll also see if I can put in a request for an Inter-Library Loan on my end. Please post if you're able to obtain a copy. Hi JAN!

I voted for you during your RFA (FWIW).

Small collaboration request, please. Could you do a plagiarism (paraphrasing) review of "Fluorine"? Report your findings to the FAC page.

I have been over the article a decent amount and have seen some of the sources. My bet is that we don't have a problem. IOW this is not a request based on suspicion. Just that FA wants some sort of check done. If you have access to it, one source to check would be the Ullman's articles (see bib).

Thanks in advance!

TCO (talk) 18:12, 12 June 2011 (UTC)

I'll take a look at it over the next day or two. January (talk) 22:00, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Much appreciated! Will help us push forward with FA process!TCO (talk) 22:03, 12 June 2011 (UTC)
Pressure is off. Our FAC got closed, still working on polishing the article. Probably come back to you in early August, for a check. Probably more effective if you look at it then. TCO (talk) 15:19, 17 June 2011 (UTC)

Cloud Data Management Interface

Hey, thanks for catching the further problems on Cloud Data Management Interface that I missed, and for the recent revdels! :) --BelovedFreak 09:03, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

User:Reactionaryprinciple/Mark Loveys

Thank you for deleting that attack page. Should Reactionaryprinciple be blocked? I didn't know where to report. My twinkle options for ARV only showed vandalism, username, and sockpuppetry. I considered taking to ANI, but I thought I'd ask you. Ryan Vesey (talk) 23:39, 18 June 2011 (UTC)

Turns out the user's already blocked, they were indeffed back in 2009 for disruptive editing [7]. January (talk) 00:08, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
Ahh, when I checked the block log, I had the users name in the admin slot. Ryan Vesey (talk) 00:14, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Clerk input?

Hi. :) We've got a couple of copyright clerks proposed at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems/Clerks to help User:NortyNort, who is doing some amazing heavy lifting. (As are you, I note. I really appreciate your work in that area!) I need a few copyright admins to weigh in. The basic idea is to just to indicate if you think that these people have demonstrated enough familiarity with copyright cleanup to be trusted to take action without regular admin review. If you can help out, that would be great. If you aren't familiar enough with them to weigh in, that's fine. If you are familiar with them and have doubts, it would be great to note that, too. Some nominees may not be ready, and if you think that's the case with anybody mentioned there, that's good to know. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:26, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Added my support. Good to see more clerks coming on board. January (talk) 21:29, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Courtesy note

Hi January. This is just a courtesy note that I've mentioned you on AN/I here. If you have any thoughts on the subject, please add them there. Thanks, 28bytes (talk) 15:57, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

A pattern of behaviour, making work, not an encyclopaedia

https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/w/index.php?title=Section_80&action=history This editor does a lot of that, look at the timings, and I think it woul d be more helpful if he did not, or took a note and and revisited it to see whether subseqyuent additions had answered whatever fault he saw. Midgley (talk) 22:29, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

I guess you're referring in particular to his taggings of Richard Granger. While the taggings were clearly incorrect, there were considerable problems with the article. I requested input at the BLP noticeboard. January (talk) 11:42, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
No. Obviously that was what caused me to notice, and take an interest, but a look at his contribs trail showed a similar pattern - minutes after the first commit to a page he tags it for speedy deletion, and not always with an applicable reason. Midgley (talk) 12:23, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
You needn't take it personally Midgley - new Page patrolling requires a lot of CSD action - any time I over-react there are others like January to correct me. I do a lot of new page patrolling so meet a lot of articles that dont work initially. MarkDask 17:18, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Deleting external links. Rav55 (talk) 13:27, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm finding this difficult to get around/understand (posting on wikipedia and so on) so bare with me. A link I posted was deleted twice today. The link is to my website. All the information that is on the wiki page comes from information I have made available through my site. In the past I have had contact with the "said" person and his official sources (management and official site admin). I am the only source of information on the web for this said celeb. My link isn't to spam but being that, it is the only source online for information for this "said celeb". I feel that my link does belong on the Wiki page. Now I am not sure who removed the link to begin with (it was on there yrs ago originally) but I am wondering how or where do I take this up? Like I mentioned earlier. I am a bit confused as to how this is done. I have tried to read all the info online about it but just messes with my head.

Fansites in general are not normally considered suitable as external links, the relevant part of the guideline is point 11 of WP:External links#Links normally to be avoided which lists fansites. Per WP:ADV, the guidelines also advise against linking to your own website. You may like to consider asking at WP:External links/Noticeboard if you would like further opinions on this. Whitehead article

Nice job on catching the copyvio there -- my apologies, I'm still learning how this goes and didn't think to check on where the original post came from before starting to edit. Cheers! Curiouselephant (talk) 03:33, 4 July 2011 (UTC)

It would appear we have quite a serious problem with bots no longer listing things at WP:CP, please see Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Bot problems for more. Dpmuk (talk) 10:47, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

Strikeout8

You have just issued this guy a level 4-im warning; however, I surveyed their edits and realised they're only here to troll. Not even one of their edits was ever useful, but somehow they've managed to fly under the radar for a year or so. So I've gone ahead and indeffed now. Hope you don't mind. Cheers. Salvio Let's talk about it! 17:02, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

I completely agree with that, looking at it again that's what I should have done. January (talk) 17:12, 10 July 2011 (UTC)

Undo an action

Hello!

On 26th June, you merged two articles under the title: Directorate-General for Health and Consumers (European Commission). Please undo this action and make the article HEALTH-EU Portal like it used to be. The article HEALTH-EU Portal is translated in all EU languages. I just got the green light for the permissions office from wikipedia, and I aim to upload all of them by the end of the month, so please do not merge the English version with something different, because all EU citizens have the right to access the same article in their language about the HEALTH-EU Portal. The fact that you merged the EU-HEALTH Portal article in English with another is impeding this.

Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me.

I've undone the merge and restored a stub. If you're referring to the copyrighted content that was removed, the volunteers dealing with your query should be able to restore that for you or request restoration. January (talk) 15:20, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

The DC3

Hi January - I note you declined my CSD of this article. I follow up every CSD I nominate to hone my judgement. You see nothing promotional in the article, and I agree it dont exactly read like an advertisement, and hence I respect your view, but my view is that the article is not notable based on the fact that the band haven't even premiered their first album yet - how can that qualify as encyclopedic? I should say here your view regarding new albums is one I've met several times before and I think I will therefore have to rethink my disposition regarding articles about "upcoming" albums. Thanks. MarkDask 17:08, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

I'm not convinced this band is notable either and I tagged it with {{notability}}, but G11 is only for blatant advertising, this is a separate issue from the notability. The decline was basically because I didn't think it was blatantly promotional (nothing to do with the upcoming album). January (talk) 18:15, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I take your point. Whats your opinion of this article? MarkDask 18:53, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
That was copied from her official Facebook [8] so it could have been a G12 (copyright violation). It was very promotional in tone too, with phrases such as "brings smile and a ray of sunshine continuously beaming straight onto the big screen and into our hearts" I think the G11 was reasonable. January (talk) 21:24, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I confess I would not have taken the time to check out her facebook page but gone straight for G11 - thanks again. MarkDask 04:04, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Merge page histories to new articles

Here's a list of articles that need to have the page histories merged to the new articles.

Northamerica1000 (talk) 21:35, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for finding these, I've history merged Moo Moo Restaurant. Sami cuisine was a merge rather than a page move, you noted that the content was derived from Cuisine of Sápmi in your edit summary at the time which is correct (WP:MERGE#Performing the merger), I added a tag at the redirect [9]. Libyan cuisine was a split, per WP:SPLIT#Procedure it just needed the source of the content noted in the edit summary, which I've done here [10]. January (talk) 22:15, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

British Insurance

Hello, You keep altering/removing whatever I add to the British Insurance page - I am curious as to why you are doing this. Please could you let me know your reasons. LizzieDoyle (talk) 08:30, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

I removed an unsourced section of the article, Wikipedia requires information to be cited to reliable sources (see WP:V) - you have not cited sources for any of your edits. It was also something of a repeat of what's in the introduction.
The article has also been a target of promotional editing, it was originally created by the managing director of the company and has received further promotional edits since them. Wikipedia very strongly discourages company representatives from creating or editing articles about their organisations, as this represents promotion and a conflict of interest. Last year I cleaned it up to comply with Wikipedia's policies, and I'm seeking to keep it that way. January (talk) 09:35, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Connected (film) Editing

Hello,

Curious as to why you removed the film's synopsis from the Wiki page? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connected:_An_Autoblogography_About_Love,_Death_%26_Technology). As of now, the film does not have a synopsis? We are the marketing agency working ont he film. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jasonmeskin (talkcontribs) 15:24, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

The text is copyrighted, and since the process for donating copyrighted materials has not been followed (see WP:IOWN) that makes it a copyright violation as it is not compatibly licensed. It also appeared to be an extract from promotional material and as such was not neutral in tone (see WP:NPOV). January (talk) 15:31, 18 July 2011 (UTC)

It was a copyvio of his website which had been removed once before, I reverted back to a stub version. Also dropped him a welcome and COI note. I think he's notable though – I just found a BBC profile on him [11]. January (talk) 16:55, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
Yes i had googled him as well before i posted on your talk bud didn't want to integrate a source into the questionable material.RafikiSykes (talk) 17:34, 18 July 2011 (UTC)
