Good Evening,

I have a question about your removal of content in this article. Please see what I wrote below your post at Talk:MV Elwha. Teofilo talk 23:06, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the support

Thanks for the support. I find it depressingly familiar that when an editor reverts without a comment on the talk page of "No is is not because xyz" that it is a lost cause because 99 time out of 100 they know its a copyright violation and have been doing the same in other articles. Ironic in this case given the user name! -- PBS (talk) 08:18, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

If it's anything to you

I got the userpage oppose on my RfA as well (and a bunch of comments from supporters). I don't want to comment on its validity, but I thought you might want to know that you're not alone. Whether you change it or not is totally up to you; don't get overly concerned over it. Hope your RfA keeps going this smoothly, and I look forward to seeing you on the other side! The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 05:54, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

At least you have a better excuse than me; the Luddite in me prevents me from updating anything of mine here. If you want to fill in more on your page, I'm sure it'll pacify BR, but don't feel obligated or anything. Once again, good luck. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 06:31, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
I wouldn't worry about the userpage oppose. I can see the argument that userboxen detailing your language skills are useful if you have some language skills other than English, otherwise I see userpages as very much a personal choice - with a redlink as a valid option. Well results are what matter. Come to think of it, I'm not sure anchors in headers aren't redundant—the headers can be linked directly. By the way, didn't know you were up for RFA but congrats. Copyright, fair use and snatches of lyrics

Hi, congrats on your fellow-new-adminship! I noticed that you have an interest in copyright, so thought I'd drop this one on you. Full or long extracts of lyrics were rightly deleted a few times from Eyes on Me (Faye Wong song) when it was part of the article Music of Final Fantasy VIII. However, without knowing the details of fair use law, I thought a few lines ought to be permitted with a very similar justification to album covers, especially the lines that explain and give context to the song title. Nevertheless these too were removed (here), citing copyright, although the editor mentioned on my talk page (archived) that he was playing safe. Do you think it would be acceptable to reinsert these few lines, with a hidden inline comment claiming fair use, and documented on the talk page? Seems OK to me, having followed your userpage links and found WP:NFC#Text. – Fayenatic L (talk) 13:28, 23 February 2012 (UTC)

Just had to apologize for giving you short shrift when I meant to give you a shout out. :) Sorry about that; I was at the absolute worst point of a migraine and highly frazzled by this unexpected work bomb that had dropped in my lap.

You and your contributions to copyright work have been a serious morale booster for me. :) --Moonriddengirl (talk) 01:01, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Not a problem. I had noticed that post but assumed I'd been around long enough now not to warrant a mention! I'm still amazed you can do anything while having a migraine. Dpmuk (talk) 06:07, 27 February 2012 (UTC)

Fuzzy-trace theory

Hi, on February 27th you deleted the Fuzzy-trace theory article and redirected it to Confabulation's page. I think that that theory deserves it's own article (I got nearly 80 articles searching on psycinfo), and i'm working on a project with my university that involves the creation or the review of a wikipedia article, and I have chosen to work on that one. So this is why i am going to undo your contribution and re-upload the article. Anyway i assure you that i have read all the guides to create correctly an article and i am aware of all the rules of wikipedia. Regards, Miolia (talk) 17:22, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Hi Dpmuk. Could you look at the text of the now deleted Oxford-Georgian Society and University of Oxford Georgian Society and tell me how similar they are to the draft in User:AktadG/sandbox. I'm in the process of advising this user on the feasibility of re-creating the article. In my opinion, it isn't feasible, but I just want to be sure. You can answer here. I've got your page on watch. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 06:52, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Please Read this thoroughly

Dear Dpmuk,

I understand where you are coming from, and the reasons why you are doing it. I did admit that I have copy pasted most of the information I posted on this article from another website, I am not denying that. But you also must understand what was the cause of this problem, the copyright violation happened in the first place. Please bear with me as I explain, as I have done so many times, I really hope that this time you and the other admins will understand it clearly. The first original page of this article was done or contributed by an unknown, I could not find the original author, but it was believed to be 6 years ago or so, I am not sure. By the way, the organization changed its power structure 2 years ago, so, a lot can happen in 2 years, and I was just merely updating the article. When I started my editing,

  • I may have changed or corrected a few words of the original article BUT I did NOT delete any or change the structure of the articles.
  • I did copy pasted the newly added informations from a website, the organizations official and only website.
  • I did referenced the informations, listing the website as the reference. And everytime I click save page, there was no error report or any messages saying that I have committed copyright violation.
  • I was almost finished and then I got a message saying that this article was in suspicion of copyright violation. I nonetheless continue to edit is as I taught I would handle it later when I am finished.
  • As I've finished my editing, I proceed to correct the duplication error report, It took me a while, until I finally discovered what was the source of the problem. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART, the error report told me that I have copy pasted A PARAGRAPH, a single paragraph from this website which I have never even heard of plus been to, http://www.developmentgateway.com.au/cms/sectors/governance/page6430.html, the whole copyright violation error that I was accused of started because of this. I was supposed to reference that website in the reference section but I didn't. Of course I didn't, because I did not copy paste the information from that website, and because that website has no affiliations with the organization.
  • So I decided to paraphrase, but before I could finish what I was doing, the page has already been blocked. I did noticed that all of the other informations that I copy pasted from the organization's official website showed no error, no copyright violation, because I HAVE referenced the organization's official website. But because of one paragraph, and a completely random, unknown website, the page was blocked.
  • I did identify myself as an employee of the organization, but like you said there was no sure way of verifying who I say I am, I understand, and I have talked to my superiors about this, about allowing permission for wikipedia and other people to modify the informations at the original website. But they have decided that, it is not acceptable as the website is a government protected website, the property of the government, so they cannot allow it to be easily accessed and modified. But they did state that as long as I referenced the website at wikipedia, then there would be no problem. I did. I did referenced the website, the official website.

Yesterday, the page was no longer blocked, thanks to user RA0808, who was kind enough to help me, and understand my situation. I have considered the matter to be resolved and that there will be no more issues, and I can continue doing what I first set out to do. So today, I started to edit the page, copy pasting the informations as I did before from the organization's website, without forgetting to referenced the website as the source, I did referenced it. Halfway through, minutes before this reply, I receive a message from you, saying that you have blocked it again. Can you understand what I am going through? How frustrated I am? No disrespect to you, but you have just recreated an issue that was already solved, the same excuse of copyright violation, while I have thoroughly explained myself over and over again, that I did not commit any copyright violations, I did NOT copy pasted from this website http://www.developmentgateway.com.au/cms/sectors/governance/page6430.html, that's why I didn't referenced it, because again, it has no affiliations with the organization. It was clear that all of it was a mistake and misunderstanding. I copy pasted from this website http://www.sprm.gov.my/, the official website, and I referenced it as the source, which is why I never received any error(duplication detector errors, admin error/complaints) from Wikipedia saying I committed plagiarism. It is not plagiarism if you cited the source or referenced it, am I right?

Do you understand now? Or do I have to explain my self further. Just a couple hours ago, I was editing the page, doing the same thing, with referencing the official website, I did not receive any error report, at all. Frankly speaking, I am tired of all this explaining, over and over again, so here's what I'll do; I really hope that you and all the other admins understand where I am standing, as I have explained myself, and if you do agree with me that I've done nothing wrong, you will unblock the page to allow me to complete my task, or if so you and the other admins decide that I am still wrong no matter what I've said and explained, then delete the page, don't hold or block it for investigation whatsoever, because I can honestly say that other than myself and my superiors(which is unlikely), there will be no one else that's going to solve the issue. I won't even bother anymore. Delete it immediately if you decide I am wrong, unblock it and let me continue do what I was doing if you decide I am right.

Thank you very much. Kery sprm (talk) 09:34, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

No rush. I just remember it being your reason for wanting adminship so I thought I'd throw it your way directly instead of figuring out the "process". -- stillnotelf is invisible 13:58, 15 March 2012 (UTC)
Well at the time the main delete button was more my reason although revdel was one as well. Anyway the relevant process is to tag with {{copyvio-revdel}} although I've hardly ever seen that used so I suspect a request to a friendly admin is always likely to be more efficient. issues with Draco Foundation (NZ) Charitable Trust

Hi Dpmuk, thank you for your clarification. I'll go through your points and offer to resolve them:

  • 1. Blanking/Deletion - I will re-read the instructions and follow them. I did send an email last night to give permission so perhaps that's already sorted
  • 2. I thought I resolved notability by inserting a reference directly to the NZ (government) Company Office's website displaying our organisation's Certificate of Incorporation as a charitable trust under New Zealand law
  • 3. Username - sorry I wasn't aware of this. I had set up that account a looong time ago (2008) but didn't really do anything with it. I think there might be an account under my name in existence, I will track that down and delete the Nzresilience one
  • 4. I do understand and thank you once again for your help. I'm concerned around the Conflict of Interest issue and have posted the page onto what I think is the right place to ask for someone to review and update it

Document Records Wiki Page and Facebook

Hello, I wonder if you could assist us please. Some of the info on Wiki pertaining to our listing is factually incorrect but I guess we can deal with that, however someone has linked the page to Facebook and listed us as an organisation. I presume this has come from either yourself or another individual. We don't have any objection in principle but due to a glitch with Facebook this listing is the only one that appears to come up for Document Records on a Facebook search. We started our own Facebook page as Document Records..a record label but it would appear that your Wiki listing "trumps" our own company page in the listings hence any one who tries to search for us simply finds your listing. We would be obliged if you would take the Wiki page off Facebook if you are able to until we resolve this situation. Thanks very much. Gillian Atkinson. Satisfying Copyright material with comment or message from author Darren Naish

Hello. I am enquiring about your April 3 delete of new material I was adding to the article "Sparassodonta", taken from a blog written by Darren Naish titled "Long-snouted marsupial martens and false thylacines" where he writes "Still borhyaenids, proborhyaenids and thylacosmilids to come, and dare I say that I've left the best to last. Incidentally, wikipedia'a entries on borhyaenoids are woefully inadequate. Wouldn't it be great if someone took the information presented here (and in the other articles) and repackaged it for wider dissemination. Hint hint." So, based on the author´s suggestion I was re-packaging his article as "Sparassodonta" when you removed it for investigacion of copyright infringement. My question is, would you like me to get a message from the author saying that he is alright with this use in Wikipedia, or is his above quote enough? If I ask for a personal message, how shall I use it so that you will know that Darren gave permission to use and manipulate editoriallly his material?

Thanks. huicocos Huicocos (talk) 18:47, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Abuse Filter on the Article Feedback Tool

Hey there :). You're being contacted because you're an edit filter manager, At the moment, we're developing Version 5 of the Article Feedback Tool, which you may or may not have heard about. If you haven't; for the first time, this will involve a free-text box where readers can submit comments :). Obviously, there's going to be junk, and we want to minimise that junk. To do so, we're working the Abuse Filter into the tool.

For this to work, we need people to write and maintain filters. I'd be very grateful if you could take a look at the discussion here and the attached docs, and comment and contribute! Thanks :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 18:13, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Review requested.

I made a comment in a discussion about copyright here [1] and then added a clarification here [2]. The second part was added so it clear that I wasn't saying it was ok, only that it is likely ok, less absolute. I'm fairly confident in my interpretation, but if I've made any mistakes, point them out here so I can go and correct them there. This one discussion isn't an area of high impact on copyright, but since I expect to slowly work in the copyright area, I find asking for review helpful. Dennis Brown © 15:34, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I split this noticeboard to Wikipedia:Copyright problems/Noticeboard. See my rationale at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive237#Copyright problems noticeboard new location. I don't believe I have any substantial objection to the change, Dpmuk (although I haven't looked at the particulars), but I've undone it until you are able to verify that the bot has been updated. It's not urgent enough by any means to break the bot. Is yours the only one we have running at this point? I have added very important comments about your very delicate position and the accurate decision you reached despite 70% pro voting. We need to establish a precedence in which reliable international sources are the basis for decisions and not popular voting. This is a clear case of such need. I also want to draw your attention regarding how the talk page was handled and manipulated by some with excessive commenting and how titles were changed unilaterally. Since you are directly involved, I thought I put your attention to check there. Refer to "Review of my closure of Talk:Syrian uprising (2011–present)#Requested move to Syrian Civil War title" werldwayd (talk) 21:44, 24 June 2012 (UTC)

Ashby Magna

Why did you change it all we wrote the copyright in 2002. I still have the original in word, change it back you have no right to do what you did.Ashbymagnaman (talk) 17:55, 1 July 2012 (UTC)Ashbymagnaman

Removing CP day

I believe I've addressed the remaining item for 18 May. The notice says when "very ticket on a day is clear, the day may be removed."

I don't know whether this is done automatically by your bot, or done manually. I suspect the latter, but I don't know if it has to be archived, or simply deleted.

Are there archives, or are we just supposed to know to search for Wikipedia:Copyright problems/date ?--SPhilbrick(Talk) 14:28, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Re: RM close Syrian uprising (2011–present)

Yeah. I probably got the date wrong on the move protection. If thats what I get attacked on, I am confident that there's no policy that says Admins have to know how to count. Thanks for the heads up. --Mike Cline (talk) 00:16, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Global bans policy discussion

At meta:Requests for comment/Global bans, where you have commented in support of Option 2, a third option has recently been implemented. The first two options did not prove a way for respondents to indicate that they oppose global bans entirely, i.e., that it is not possible to write a meaningful global bans policy that would attract their support. Option 3 is intended to provide that opportunity, and to aid in distinguishing between people who oppose the proposed policy because it requires improvements and those who oppose the proposed policy because no policy permitting global bans should be adopted.

Because the third section was added late by a respondent, it is possible that some people who responded early in the RFC have commented at option 2, but would really prefer to support option 3, or support both. If so, you may voluntarily choose to move your original comment or to or strikethrough your original comment and add new comments. This is a courtesy notice of the change, and there is no requirement that you take any action. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:54, 13 July 2012 (UTC)

Omer Rains Page

Hi! I am retired CA Sen. Omer L. Rains' new P.A. We would like to get the page up and running again. I hope we can do this soon. I have sent an email to the appropriate place re: the CC-BY-3.0 licensing. I want to use the CC license and the GNU on both Backtothesummit.com and senorains.com. However, since I did not create those pages myself it's going to take awhile to reach those that did and can modify it. I can also rewrite the article but I need access to it online. I don't like working from paper.

DpmukBOT listings

I was wondering what sort of logic you used to list overlooked articles blanked with {{subst:copyvio}} on the daily pages at WP:CP. In particular I noticed that The Ignerents was listed on Wikipedia:Copyright problems/2012 August 13 when it was already in the SCV listing for the day which is rather redundant (or at least so it seems to me). If you could reply here it would be appreciated. VernoWhitney (talk) 17:04, 15 August 2012 (UTC)

At the moment it simply compares those page in Category:Articles tagged for copyright problems to those listed on one of the CP pages and adds any that are missing (more technical explanation available on request). The problem with scanning the SCV pages and then only automatically listing if it wasn't found in either is that one of the outcomes at SCV is listing at CP which means it possibly should be listed on both at the same time (completed lisitng on SCV, new listing on CP).
Longer term I think the whole process needs an overhaul but what I'd like to change that is of more relevance here is that SCV, copypaste and closeparaphrasing tags should be dealt with as soon as possible without the 7 day delay for CP. What I'd like to see is a change at WP:CP so that, for examples, listing appearing on 15 August sub-page are listings that should be dealt with that day (i.e. all SCV, copypaste and closeparahrasing plus those that been copyvio tagged for 7 days). This would mean new copyivio taggings would be added to the page for 7 days in the future (22 August for example). This would hopefully mean SCV lisitings got dealt with quicker and so the situation that occurred here would be less likely to happen.
Of course what we really need is more people dealing with both CP and SCV!
You've also reminded me that I really should make the BOT code publicly available. I was waiitng to Wiki.java was updated with a new feature (which I can't even remember what was) so that I oculd use the standard version. Must remember to look into seeing if it's been updated and if not just make my source code available anyway. Dpmuk (talk) 23:26, 15 August 2012 (UTC)
What I had done with VWBot back when it was running and doing the same task was look for tagged articles without any backlinks to Wikipedia:Copyright problems, Wikipedia:Suspected copyright violations, or Wikipedia:Copyright problems/NewListings. The way it's currently set up with SCV being transcluded into the daily CP pages there should be no real reason to double list it on the same date. Back when SCV and CP had reasonable-to-no backlogs (I know, it's been a while), an article just had to be tagged as being blanked, because whichever admin was clearing the day from CP would check to ensure everything from that day's SCV was completed as well before untranscluding it.
All of the SCV date pages are transcluded into WP:SCV in addition to the CP date pages, so it's easy for them to be handled separately and without the delay. The date system is really set up the same way as PUF and XfD and every other noticeboard that I can recall, where it's dated when it's filed, not when it's due. I also don't think all new copypastes and paraphrases need to be dealt with the same day they're tagged, since (hopefully) the issue isn't as clear-cut or time-sensitive as those which are blanked with {{subst:copyvio}}. All that said, I'm not sure how dealing with SCV more promptly would have avoided this particular situation because in this case it was dealt with promptly -- I blanked it instead of stubbing/deleting because permission was asserted.
Now of course all of the above is colored by my earlier experience, which was back when MRG was the primary admin running CP and I was the primary one running SCV.
And fairly unrelated to the above: I'm trying to get VWBot back in business and would probably like to sit down with you at some later date about what exactly your bot is doing around the Copyclean arena and how it's doing it, but that's a conversation for some other day when I don't have more pressing off-wiki work to do. VernoWhitney (talk) 19:38, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
First off, you're right the issue wouldn't have been avoided in this instance - I misread the edit log and hadn't realised it was you who had done the blanking as well. It would be reasonably easy to get the bot to scan SCV as well although I'll be away for most of the next three weeks so won't have time to do it for a while.
In principal I agree with copypaste / closeparaphrase not needing to be dealt with so quickly but that's dependent on them being used properly. However, I have seen many, many articles tagged with one of those that should have been tagged with copyvio or even G12 and that's why I think they should be looked at quicker. I think the issue of what tags we have and how they're used also needs to be dealt with at some point as I think it's confusing to many editors.
I got DpmUKBot up and running when WP:CP was left without a bot. It's still not the best or most robust bot so if you wanted to take over again that would be fine by me. I think the only substantial difference in it's operation is that it ignores closeparaphrase tags with a copyvio=no parameter. I set this up following discussion with MRG so as the tag could stay on pages where paraphrasing was a concern but that it wasn't a copyright concern. Dpmuk (talk) 19:51, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Okay, so I think I have VWBot back up and running and as of today's run it should handle that copyright=no parameter (such as is on Elizaveta Polonskaya) correctly. Any chance you can put DpmukBot's CP listings on hold for a day so I can do a 'live' automated run and see if I've got it and my cron schedule straightened back out? VernoWhitney (talk) 13:18, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Sorry for the very late reply to this but I've been on vacation and it turned out I was in a bit of a rush when I left so had no time to leave a notice here. I'm back now so just let me know when it's convenient for you and I'll kill DpmukBOT for a day. Dpmuk (talk) 01:02, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
No worries; I figured it was something like that. I've just been undoing your bot's listings on the daily CP pages and running VWBot manually (there seem to be some bugs in your code leading to extra listings, or else we're just looking at the tasks differently). Anyways, somehow my server's cron function got all messed up when it went offline last June and I'm still trying to get a reliable hack put together so that I don't have to break down and reinstall the OS since I've tried just about everything else. I'll let you know once I get that fixed and want to try taking over everything for a day. I thought I had it last week when I left you that message, but it turned out to be a non-robust solution and broke again. VernoWhitney (talk) 02:31, 8 September 2012 (UTC)
Well running it on something other than toolserver would be an advantage IMO as my bot has fallen over a few times because of toolserver issues, and not very elegantly at that. A full disk seemed to be the culprit for a while. I know my bot wasn't detecting some listings in the "very old issues" section before I left but I run out of time to debug exactly why. If you were removing these duplicates it would keep on trying to re-add them as it wasn't detecting the original listing. I was relatively happy leaving it like this as the bot would detect them on what ever page it was re-listed (I think) on so it would only duplicate once. Let us know when you're ready to go automatic and I'll disable my bot. If I can get the bugs ironed out I might consider changing it's run time to 1am and leaving it running as a backup to VWBot.
