The redirects were created long ago and are in the ‘gray area’, since the names are between original research and the information found in reliable sources. I believe redirects mentioned, as well as Kapau a Nuakea just confuse.

The page about Nuʻakea was created by me when I didn‘t understand notability measures, so if you like, delete the article. Wikipedia isn’t a genealogy site; what’s known about Nuʻakea are her parents’ names, partner’s name and the fact she had a famous child. One’s notability cannot be made from another one’s. Hi, thanks for the message. But I'm not sure that there is any policy-based reason for me to unilaterally speedy-delete those pages. Kapauanuakea was created as the result of a page move; Kamauli-wahine was created by another user and does not seem like an implausible typo; and Nuʻakea can't be deleted by author request because there have been other significant contributors such as 93.136.124.10. You are welcome, of course, to nominate the redirects at WP:RFD and the article via WP:PROD or WP:AFD if you wish. DanCherek (talk) 17:32, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

I understand all should follow the rules. Unfortunately, I can’t present evidence the redirects are ‘harmful’—they’re just pointless. Kapauanuakea is a name found on the (amateur) genealogy sites, so I changed the title in 2021, since the ruler is known as Kapau-a-Nuʻakea in historians’ works. I agree they're pretty harmless, and if they help readers get to the correctly-titled article, then it's probably a good thing to keep them around. Kapauanuakea has gotten about 150 pageviews since it was moved last year, so I think there are at least some readers – who may not remember where the dashes or ʻokina are located, or who are coming here from those amateur genealogy sites – who benefit from the redirect. Even if the text was compatibly licensed, phrases like Your stint at Greenwich will be challenging, inspiring and rewarding because you will be pushing the boundaries of knowledge at one of the best private sector universities belong nowhere on Wikipedia. That's promotion, plain and simple, designed to attract applicants to Greenwich, and that's just not the purpose of the Wikipedia article. As it turns out, every subpage of the university's website has "© Copyright Greenwich University 2022. All rights reserved." at the bottom, which means that it can't be copied to Wikipedia anyway. Hi there! I think it's okay to leave the redirect in place, even if the main article is titled differently. I declined the speedy deletion request because I did a Google search for "Bringing home the body of King Karl XII" and found plenty of matches for that spelling, so it may be helpful to readers who are trying to get to the article. Ms. Rios, both User:Jéské Couriano and User:DanCherek are very experienced wikipedians who do their best to prevent harm to subjects of articles we classify as WP:Biographies of Living Persons. Imagine how you would feel if someone created an article about you which was impersonated, completely false or attcked you in some way. These editors were protecting Wikipedia from doing damage to Michelle Rios, so please know that their highest priority was protecting another human being, such actions inadvertently causing you minor upset. Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a social media outlet, such actions are bound to occur. Since you're the deleting admin I'm giving you a heads up I plan on creating a new draft using found sources. I'd like to do this in cooperation with the subject as opposed to doing it meatpuppet-style. I intend to put any such created draft up for AFC review before any move back to mainspace. I would think this could take a few weeks or so, depending on Ms. Rios' assistance. Who knows? We may have found someone which can help us improve theater-related pages. Hi. What is your connection with Basel Ahmad Al-Haroon and/or GMCO? It sounds like you have a conflict of interest, in which case you should first disclose it per WP:COI. Please refer to Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials for more information on how to release material under a compatibly free license (but doing so will allow anyone to share, distribute, transmit, and adapt your work, even commercially). However, I will also point out that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable, independent secondary sources have to say about a particular subject, and so basing an entire article on someone's official bio is generally not appropriate either. Dan, I hope you still like flowers and music, especially when flowers and sky come like the Ukrainian flag ;) - I have a sad case on DYK today, Ruslana Pysanka. She was ITN before, in the RD group, Recent deaths. That is a field where I sometimes need help, and wonder if you'd be willing. It's easy: nominations appear on WP:ITNN, they need supports (3 and more) and no oppose, and then are placed at the beginning of the group {{In the news}}, discarding the last one. Crediting those involved is super-easy: just a click on the word behind the name, that's it. At the moment I have Zofia Posmysz there, marked ready last night, but not moved. Perhaps because older ones should be handled first. Perhaps because I received a credit today already. One consideration is that every entry should last for 24 hours. Perhaps do nothing right now and just look and see if that is a field where you might want to work occasionally - weekends and vacation time make it slow, while it normally functions well, I must say. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:07, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

I've been staying busy! Great to hear (and no need to call me "sir", please). As I mentioned, when summarizing information from sources, it's important to be careful about close paraphrasing, which is superficial modification of the source material, such as slight reordering of words while retaining much of the original word choice and sentence structure. I sometimes find it helpful to read the source material, then try to summarize it without directly referring to it (of course you can look at it afterwards, but this might help avoid the temptation of using the same or substantially similar phrasing). Can you confirm how "revdel" was actually warranted on this article? I don't see any copyright violation in the text as it existed. I used my own wording to preserve the meaning and content and there was no exact same match between the Wikipedia wording and the article content. I compared the text you added at 13:28, 30 August 2022 to page 354 of Modi's India: Hindu Nationalism and the Rise of Ethnic Democracy (2021) and found significant copying from that source, including the following (overlapping text in bold):

About your worrisome comment and disregard of the civility policy

Hi. I am contacting you per WP:ADMINISTRATORABUSE, "If a user believes an administrator has acted improperly, they should express their concerns directly to the administrator responsible and try to come to a resolution in an orderly and civil manner."

Summary

On 5 September 2022 I contacted you in the talk page of Wikipedia talk:Requests for permissions requesting your review of the permission you granted to Protonk as a pending changes reviewer. Also requesting at least your admonition to said editor due to gross violation of the civility policy. Given your inappropriate response, brushing aside my complaint and even expressing support for the other editor, I feel compelled to complain and try to resolve the dispute with you hereby.

Context

The user Protonk criticized me in the Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Pending changes reviewer thread, writing, "it is...worrisome that you have been here for as long as you have with as many edits as you have and you talk to people like this. I would not want to work with someone who behaved like this". Apparently they didn't like that I pointed out policies and guidelines regarding in my opinion baseless accusations against me by an adiministrator, in which I did not use any fool language at all and remained civil, although highly demoralized.

I posted in Protonk's talk page, seeking an explanation about their criticism directed at me. Ironically, Protonk, despite the aforementioned criticism towards me about how I was talking, decided to reply to me in this manner, "User:Thinker78, you came to my fucking talk page moaning about some shit ANOTHER editor said and accusing me of not understanding things and when I (only one in a line of too patient Wikipedians) tried to explain to you that your problem was you love to lecture other editors about shit you don't understand (policy, editing, logic, just to name a few) you demonstrated in the most obtuse way possible that you weren't interested in listening."

I was interested in listening, but I was trying to make a point that Protonk was in their own view of things, lecturing me, but at the same time criticized me for "lecturing" others. Then Protonk just asked me if it was a joke, and then I thought they were not interested in discussing things and was just wasting my time. I have to point out that Protonk did state previously that I was wasting someone else's time, so there shouldn't be an issue for me saying the same thing about them. I stated that Protonk was displaying poor analytical skills, which is my opinion based on my understanding that Protonk misunderstood issues that I could have explained at length if I was given the opportunity to, instead of first being dismissed as a prank and being told off by gross rudeness the level of which I have never done in Wikipedia.

For some reason, after bringing to your attention such rudeness and gross profanity, you, DanCherek, an administrator in Wikipedia, decided to instead rebuke me for unrelated issues. You also brushed aside said incivility and even showed support for the other editor.

My expectation

My expectation was simple enough. Simply to conduct a neutral review on your decision to grant a permission, due to such display of incivility. Or in any case, to admonish said editor for violating the civility policy, given that it was your decision to grant them advanced rights. One would expect an editor with advanced rights would have better standards of behavior, better judgment and cohesion in their arguments. It doesn't seem it is good judgment or good cohesion in arguments to be criticizing someone for "talk to people like this" for pointing out policies and guidelines while at the same time failing to behave with basic civility. It doesn't seem it is good judgment or good cohesion in arguments to be telling someone they wasted someone else's time and not understanding policies and guidelines, while at the same time snapping furiously when told a similar thing.

It would have sufficed at least a response reminding the other editor about the civility policy and that it is unacceptable such level of rudeness in Wikipedia. And thereon if you decided to, if you had any concerns about me you could have also reminded me of whatever it was your opinion that I was failing in. I don't think that you have been inflating your edit count or pulling any pranks, and I can see why you are understandably upset if other editors suggest something to that effect. I know it never feels good when it feels like someone is minimizing your volunteer contributions and the time that you've put into something. With that being said: yes, temperatures were running a bit high in the exchange on Protonk's talk page, but my opinion was that it hadn't reached a point where administrative action was necessary, and certainly not for revoking their ability to review pending changes. If you aren't satisfied with my actions (or non-actions) here, you're absolutely welcome to bring them up for discussion at WP:ANI or WP:AARV – additional opinions are often helpful. Are patents copyrightable?

From CopyPatrol, I found this diff which is word for word of this patent. Apparently, patents are not supposed to be subjected to copyright restrictions per Copyright on the content of patents and in the context of patent prosecution#United States but it also said that there was no law that makes patents public domain by default. Based on the USPTO Terms of Use (specifically the "Patent information" section), I think we can consider that text to be in the public domain, as I don't see specific exceptions in the patent that would indicate otherwise. Of course, attribution should be given even for PD text, either by clearly marking it as a quote or by using a template like {{PD-notice}}. Yes, it's quite strange. I'm not completely certain what's going on, but it doesn't really seem like sockpuppetry to me... possibly either misguided new users or a weird spambot. I have to ask about this, too. You cite copyright violations from this one page but all of these User pages are different and do not look like copyright violations to me. Liz, I am certainly not deleting pages because they are old. I have no idea why you would say that. All of these pages contain text copied from https://web.archive.org/web/20030828151027/http://faculty.washington.edu/xpchen/, a website that dates back to 2003, long before the user pages were created. The website is neither in the public domain nor released under a compatibly free license, so any user page that copies from it is a violation of the copyright policy. I see some overlap in content, but here is a remaining question: the text in City as the Artist’s Subjectivity was a verbatim copy of this, and even if the PDF was translated from ruwiki, it doesn't appear to be a machine translation. Here's an example: the sentence The selection process was formulated to include masters from various generations and schools, each with differing artistic views, and at times dramatically different to one another. appears in both the deleted article and the PDF, but that sentence, with that specific wording, isn't apparent to me when I look at the ruwiki article. Hi, there are a few different issues here. Since you are attempting to write about your own company, you are required to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY. That typically means disclosing the relationship on your user page, and the template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Nsalzayed|employer=InsertName}}. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.

Here at Wikipedia, we care about what reliable, independent sources have written about a given subject. It's by judging the extent of coverage in these reliable sources that we assess whether something is notable enough to have an article. By contrast, press releases are usually worthless in terms of notability and they also aren't reliable sources of information, as companies can write whatever they want in a press release. So even if it's written in your own words, basing an entire article on press releases is not going to be acceptable for a Wikipedia article, nor is using promotional wording like "an innovative homegrown concept".

I did a quick search for sources on Shop Raha, and it doesn't seem like it's received any coverage in independent sources, just its own press releases and websites. Unfortunately, that likely means that it does not have the extent of coverage to warrant a Wikipedia article at this time. Yep, I looked at that copyvio report back in May. The iThenticate report indicates that the overlap is limited to titles like "Deputy Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine", so I think this is okay from a copyright point of view. There's currently no way to remove the "Copyvio - This page may contain copyright violations." from the NPP curation toolbar, but never hurts to double check. Just for future reference, I probably wouldn't have performed a history merge in this case, because it's generally used to repair attribution issues that result from a cut-and-paste move. In this case, it seems like the mainspace article was written from scratch. But on the other hand, if another editor had copied the contents of your draft and pasted it directly into mainspace, that would necessitate a histmerge. Hello. I have mostly edited articles related to semiconductors and I have come into contact with an irrational editor called Artem S. Tashkinov. I fixed a factually incorrect assertion on the 7 nm process page that asserted that the Intel 7 process is 7 nm, when in reality, it is 10 nm and I provided sources explicitly stating it. Intel 4 is actually a 7 nm process but this editor keeps undoing it while providing no sources to support their claims. The rose pic was taken on 11 Sep 2021, and this year was full of music that day, Tag des offenen Denkmals, not only singing in church and rehearsals for Verdi's Requiem, but two concerts at special places pictured, one a synagogue (pictured on its wall). Today three DYK: a piece we'll perform on Sunday /thank you for the music!), a violinist we heard in June playing the Berg Concerto (with my brother in the orchestra), and a Youth Orchestra shaped by a conductor who recently died. Soprano and alto are fine for the notes. The text: Kyrie one syllable per note, but "e" should have 2 notes and "lei" also 2 (in the alto, let's ignore that for the soprano it's 3 + 1). No idea what I do wrong for the bass clef. Same beginning notes as for Prayer for Ukraine. Is it the key? At present the bass is good for the first note, then an octave too low, and the last note should be octave below the first. The tenor is an octave too low, all of it. In edit mode, I have colour markings (maybe a feature you have to install, I forgot): normal writing white, refs pink, comments green, links blue, headers and italics grey. Hi Abrvagl! I performed a history merge, because it turns out that back in 2011, someone did a cut-and-paste move – that means they manually deleted all of the text in Turkic people in Armenia (which is now a redirect) and pasted it into the Azerbaijanis in Armenia page. That leads to attribution issues, so a history merge moves all of the old edits into the current page so that anyone looking at the history can see the original contributors. Longer explanation: because Azerbaijanis in Armenia previously existed as a redirect, those redirect revisions need to be cleared away before the software allows the history merge to be performed. So I took a few standard steps for preparing the history merge – I temporarily deleted the page, restored all the revisions except the early redirect ones, and then completed the merge. I know that's a lot of explanations, but let me know if you have any questions! Nothing in the article has actually been changed by this, except that the old revisions have been appended to the page history. DanCherek (talk) 04:50, 9 October 2022 (UTC)

Coverage in reliable, independent secondary sources is also the metric by which notability is generally evaluated on Wikipedia. If something hasn't received that level of coverage, then it typically doesn't merit its own article.

Hello DanCherek,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

• There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
• Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
• Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
• This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

I think the sourcing is still on the light side. The good news about the AFC review queue is that while drafts are not reviewed in any particular order, some reviewers like to prioritize the oldest ones in the queue, so with the exception of two drafts that have been waiting for four months, yours should hopefully be reviewed in the near future. While you could go through the process for verifying that you are the copyright owner, it doesn't resolve the primary COI issue anyway, so it's likely not worth it. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. If you have a connection with the subject of your draft, you will need to provide a required disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that.

Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. I noticed that you have only seven edits to mainspace (and less than 100 edits overall), so I'd recommend getting some more experience around the project first. Copyright cleanup is a notoriously difficult maintenance area to work in – the things it often involves include removing other people's additions to articles, presumptively rewriting affected text, knowing when to check for potential copyright violations, and explaining the nuances of the copyright policy to other editors, so it definitely helps to have a bit of editing experience under your belt before you dive in.
