my story today

Today's music is played by my brother's orchestra, conducted by two very young men on their way up, - the picture was taken shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began, - more detail on my talk. Images reached the day of the Tenebrae concert mentioned in July. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:27, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Thanks! It looks like there's an error on 18 July ("de}}berauroff.jpg"). DanCherek (talk) 19:14, 3 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, - fixed. - My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend of weddings, so also like the spirit ;) - Pics to come, I promise one cake, the other was too large! Good music, and better even in the concert ending the second day, - Goldberg Variations theme for an encore, after Dohnányi Serenade. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:16, 7 August 2023 (UTC)
Again not by me: today's story - with the triumph of music over military - is uplifting! - No cake yet, but a butterfly and open-air opera. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:53, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
Now: picture of heart-shaped cake(s) uploaded! - Today's story is about a tenor, - why his roles are not linked on the Main page remains a mystery to me. Today is also the birthday of the Bayreuth Festival. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:38, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
Realizing that I'm not very familiar with Britten's work at all. DanCherek (talk) 22:12, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
Did you know that I created his navbox? - for his centenary. - One more day uploaded, with another wedding cake - I couldn't resist. Today's story is about the Inkpot Madonna who returned to "her place" 9 years ago, and also has aspects of early learning, see? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:31, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Today is the anniversary of the premiere of Götterdämmerung. Berit Lindholm sang its final scene in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, only four years after her stage debut in a Mozart opera in Stockholm. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:34, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
Today I heard a delightful concert, "Himmlische Freuden", remembered having heard Vilde Frang (Bruch concerto, in Zürich, with my brother's orchestra) , and succeeded in preparing Renata Scotto's article enough for the Main page (which took two days). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:48, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
The Bruch concerto is magnificent. Glad you enjoyed the concert! DanCherek (talk) 04:37, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Yes! - Today is Debussy's birthday. - Could we make lilypond for Hevenu shalom aleichem? ... or is that copyright violation? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:51, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
I'm not really sure. Haberl's compositions are in the public domain as he died in 1910, and I'm guessing that a basic folk melody is generally okay as well as long as you aren't copying the details of a specific, more recent arrangement. DanCherek (talk) 18:55, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, will do eventually. - Today is Gwendolyn Killebrew's birthday, - pictured: a spider and sweet food --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:20, 26 August 2023 (UTC)
This too shall pass. - Ten years ago on 28 August, I heard a symphony, with a heavy heart because of the pending decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX, and not worried about my future here but Andy's. - It passed, and I could write the DYK about calling to dance, not battle, and Andy could write the DYK mentioning about peace and reconciliation, - look. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:20, 28 August 2023 (UTC)

Administrators' newsletter – September 2023

News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2023).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following an RfC, TFAs will be automatically semi-protected the day before it is on the main page and through the day after.
  • A discussion at WP:VPP about revision deletion and oversight for dead names found that [s]ysops can choose to use revdel if, in their view, it's the right tool for this situation, and they need not default to oversight. But oversight could well be right where there's a particularly high risk to the person. Use your judgment.

  Technical news

  Arbitration

  • The SmallCat dispute case has closed. As part of the final decision, editors participating in XfD have been reminded to be careful about forming local consensus which may or may not reflect the broader community consensus. Regular closers of XfD forums were also encouraged to note when broader community discussion, or changes to policies and guidelines, would be helpful.

  Miscellaneous

  • Tech tip: The "Browse history interactively" banner shown at the top of Special:Diff can be used to easily look through a history, assemble composite diffs, or find out what archive something wound up in.

Question from RoseReign (19:41, 5 September 2023)

I just created an account.. I wanted to create an article.. Is there a template I can fill out somewhere? --RoseReign (talk) 19:41, 5 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi there, welcome to Wikipedia! You can read WP:YFA for a detailed guide on how to create your first article. It will take you through the steps to create a draft that can be submitted for review. Important things to keep in mind are that the article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. If you have a connection with the subject of your draft, you will need to provide a required disclosure – see the conflict of interest guideline for more information about that. Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance. DanCherek (talk) 22:35, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from রাজকুমার রাজপুত্র on Wikipedia talk:Verifiability (12:17, 10 September 2023)

--রাজকুমার রাজপুত্র (talk) 12:17, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
Hi there, do you have a question about editing Wikipedia? DanCherek (talk) 22:36, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Question from RavenWrites (18:22, 12 September 2023)

Hello, happy to meet you! I would like to write an article about the Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (AMOPS), a non profit organization that supports osteopathic physicians in the military. I am a retired osteopathic physician and past president of AMOPS. Does that mean I am considered too close to the subject to write about it? --RavenWrites (talk) 18:22, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your interest in contributing! Since you are a past president of AMOPS, that's a conflict of interest – so you should read WP:COI for our guidelines about that – but it doesn't totally preclude you from pursuing this. You should create a draft article that can be submitted for review by following the steps at WP:YFA. An important thing to keep in mind (that I have not evaluated for AMOPS specifically) is that an article's topic should be notable. This generally means that it has already been covered in detail in good references from independent sources. Articles need to be written neutrally and without promotion. Writing an article from scratch can be really tough for new editors, so if you are finding it challenging, I would actually encourage you to edit existing articles for a while to get the hang of things. Let me know if you have additional questions or need more detailed guidance. DanCherek (talk) 22:44, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

New pages patrol newsletter

Hello DanCherek,

New Page Review article queue, March to September 2023

Backlog update: At the time of this message, there are 11,300 articles and 15,600 redirects awaiting review. This is the highest backlog in a long time. Please help out by doing additional reviews!

October backlog elimination drive: A one-month backlog drive for October will start in one week! Barnstars will be awarded based on the number of articles and redirects patrolled. Articles will earn 4x as many points compared to redirects. You can sign up here.

PageTriage code upgrades: Upgrades to the PageTriage code, initiated by the NPP open letter in 2022 and actioned by the WMF Moderator Tools Team in 2023, are ongoing. More information can be found here. As part of this work, the Special:NewPagesFeed now has a new version in beta! The update leaves the NewPagesFeed appearance and function mostly identical to the old one, but updates the underlying code, making it easier to maintain and helping make sure the extension is not decommissioned due to maintenance issues in the future. You can try out the new Special:NewPagesFeed here - it will replace the current version soon.

Notability tip: Professors can meet WP:PROF #1 by having their academic papers be widely cited by their peers. When reviewing professor articles, it is a good idea to find their Google Scholar or Scopus profile and take a look at their h-index and number of citations. As a very rough rule of thumb, for most fields, articles on people with a h-index of twenty or more, a first-authored paper with more than a thousand citations, or multiple papers each with more than a hundred citations are likely to be kept at AfD.

Reviewing tip: If you would like like a second opinion on your reviews or simply want another new page reviewer by your side when patrolling, we recommend pair reviewing! This is where two reviewers use Discord voice chat and screen sharing to communicate with each other while reviewing the same article simultaneously. This is a great way to learn and transfer knowledge.

Our festival's last concert was most moving and inspiring, and there are seconds of it - plus glimpses of an interview with the conductor, age 96 - in this tv summary. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:41, 3 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, do you have a question about editing Wikipedia? DanCherek (talk) 22:32, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from ContoRario (22:41, 8 October 2023)

Hi. How many edits I need to publish articles directly, without going through Draft/Review process? --ContoRario (talk) 22:41, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi ContoRario. Any editor who is autoconfirmed, which is automatically granted after making 10 edits and having an account that is at least four days old, can create new articles directly. Note that new articles created directly in mainspace will typically still undergo the new page review process. DanCherek (talk) 22:50, 8 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Amalain (07:14, 16 October 2023)

--Amalain (talk) 07:14, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

I updated information on the 2024 Oregon Attorney General race. But they were removed. What are my options? --Orecmg (talk) 02:24, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Orecmg, information that you add to Wikipedia articles, and especially information about living people, should be supported by a reference to a reliable source. DanCherek (talk) 14:57, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from Beandulce (02:47, 13 October 2023)

The company I work for has an outdated logo on their Wikipedia page. How do I get it updated? --Beandulce (talk) 02:47, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Beandulce, thanks for your interest in contributing. I'm guessing that the company logo is not in the public domain, which means that it should be uploaded to Wikipedia locally as a fair-use image. First of all, only editors with autoconfirmed accounts can upload images (meaning that the account must be at least four days old, and the user must have made at least ten edits). If you haven't been autoconfirmed yet, please see Wikipedia:Files for upload. Otherwise, Wikipedia:Uploading images is a pretty detailed guide on adding images to Wikipedia! Question from Jmweans (21:12, 12 October 2023)

How can you let one family suggest they are the original Brassankles or the only Brassankles and like I said my family surname is WEANS of course I’ve heard those are the surnames in that area, and when we see each other, we say that we are all kinship , but with the uniqueness of my family migrating out of that area they’re coming into area two counties away that already have families there being called Brassankles means there’s a broader region of those families now my grandfather had 3 half sisters and a half brothers that ended up migrating from Greeleyville to lumber Bridge(Lumberton) North Carolina, a little before the 1940s immersion to the lumbee‘s and the black families and that area so the connection to lumberton is very true and growing up there for summers with my aunts. I’ve got to know families from other regions in South Carolina that said, they have no relation to lumbee‘s at all, but moved in that area for farming, but the term Brassankles I know, for a fact, with talking to my father, was already in the town of walterboro, which is Colleton county sc well before my family who are brass ankles from the greater Santee area got there. --Jmweans (talk) 21:12, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi Jmweans, any information that you add to Wikipedia articles should be supported by citations to reliable, published sources, rather than your own family knowledge, etc. DanCherek (talk) 14:59, 16 October 2023 (UTC)
I need the proof of the reliable publish sources that those families originated the term “ Brassankles” or documentation that the name started with one family surname. Again My family is from that county and I know sweats goins ect.. Crane Pond, Holly Hill, Cross SC ect are places I grew up and partially raised in, this is not “Family knowledge”. Listen a lot of families in that area say they are Brassankles and when you mention to Summerville Indians, their name now are Kuso noches, before in my time growing up, and I also live in Summerville and Walterboro SC, that family were known ass Creels from Creeltown with is Ridgeville SC (Dorchester County)and also on colleton county side they are in no relation to my family again from Holly Hill area. However, you came about your reliable public sources is totally false, and I would challenge that with the arbitrator, there is a lot of false about the term, Brassankles, and who it pertains too. For the record my grandfather is from Holly Hill, Cross South Carolina. They are Brassankles and when they got to Walterboro South Carolina where I’m born they were families They were already called Brassankles so the term was widely used and no one family is a Brassankle. I would like for you to forward me all reliable public sources public records, etc. that can show me brass ankles, originate it out of one family. 2601:14B:4700:2920:F55C:245B:A59:1CC1 (talk) 23:44, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Question from AlpediSiusi (22:48, 28 October 2023)

Hallo Derek, thank you for serving as my editor. For a long time I have been upset about the blatant inaccuracies in my wiki page. While I am grateful to be included in Wikipedia, I have been worried about the mistakes or misunderstandings in the text of the entry about me. I do not work on world cinema, for example. The entry also emphasizes my work on women's histories in a repetitive fashion that is confusing. For this reason I have submitted a new, short, clean entry after reading your guidelines. After all the sacrifices I have encountered to produce my 4 books and three anthologies, I would be most grateful if my entry is accepted (or modified for formatting reasons) without altering its content. Please let me know so that everything is accurate and objective. Thank you. --AlpediSiusi (talk) 22:48, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi there, I've added the {{edit COI}} template to your talk page post so that it will be placed in the queue and reviewed by another editor. It would be helpful to references to reliable sources that support the information. DanCherek (talk) 14:37, 30 October 2023 (UTC)

The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:23, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

Can you add popular pages page for Wikipedia:WikiProject Board and table games?

I see you edit this page frequently. TIA. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:54, 2 November 2023 (UTC)

PS. Keywords that I'd suggest: "board game", "card game", "tabletop game", "dice game", "miniature game", "miniature wargame", "tile-based game". Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 04:58, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Piotrus, happy to help. How many pages do you want the bot to return on the report (maximum is 1000)? By the way, it doesn't use keywords, it works by analyzing articles whose talk pages are tagged with {{WikiProject Board and table games}}. DanCherek (talk) 13:35, 2 November 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. If it is not a problem, 1k will be fine, that's what Wikipedia:WikiProject Role-playing games/Popular pages has. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 02:45, 3 November 2023 (UTC)
No problem, done (Special:Diff/1183250450). DanCherek (talk) 03:13, 3 November 2023 (UTC)

ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:00, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

second opinion

I have gotten in trouble for copyright violation. I may deserve it, but I need clarification. It's a phrase out of a sentence. I think that as a listing of three specific things common in this area of study, it is not a violation but is a gray area. Dianna doesn't agree. She says it's not a list, but it is a list. IKt's not in WP form - is that the problem? Could you come to User talk:Jenhawk777#November 2023 and put in your two cents? Jenhawk777 (talk) 23:32, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Question from CiteMe997 (11:08, 17 November 2023)

Hey Dancherek.. It’s my pleasure, I see all the amazing work you’ve done on this space and I must say they’re exceptionally mind blowing. I’ll really love your assistance to improve on my work “Yan Daudu” --CiteMe997 (talk) 11:08, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

More pics from the trip, - and my story today is about my song of defiance, - it was a great pleasure to hear it performed today! The line "Ich steh hier und singe" (I stand here and sing) is in the movement with the music pictured, which begins with "Trotz -- Trotz -- Trotz", sounding much tougher than "defiance" ;) - in this YouTube it's at 4:55. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:07, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
Performers of the 4 Nov concert now pictured on my talk. The conductor (and 2nd tenor) stepped in last minute rescuing the performance, because the regular leader of the seniors' chorale fell ill with COVID 19 and could just listen from a balcony where nobody else was sitting. - I proudly remember having sung in an oratorio premiere seven years ago OTD. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 6 November 2023 (UTC)

Ibiza? Looks amazing. DanCherek (talk) 17:27, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
It sure was. First day uploaded, more perhaps tomorrow. Did you see that I have three items on the Main page today, almost too much of a good thing? Bach's amazing cantata with the unusual scale, first performed 300 years ago OTD, the nun for the prostitutes, and Schumann's wedding gift for Clara. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:44, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
Congrats! I really liked learning about Myrthen. DanCherek (talk) 00:04, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! There's more in German, but would need someone willing to translate more, and having the time. Today I had other projects, including my annual little Britten-birthday-gift. Help welcome. - Today is St. Martin's Day, which stands for sharing. Sharing one more day of vacation ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:49, 11 November 2023 (UTC)
I began another day of vacation pics, with the deepest blue of the sea ;) - we celebrate the birthday of a friend who wrote quite a book about the compositions of a man who will turn 300 soon. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:09, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

List of variations on Pachelbel's Canon has a lilypond of the bass line, but I think to hear the chords would be more useful, or do you think everybody knows it? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:13, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
My story today is a DYK hook from 13 years ago OTD: about the great music at one of my churches. Mozart's Requiem to come on Sunday, coupled with Arvo Pärt's Da pacem Domine, - I guess you might come if it was a bit closer. Perhaps watch the video of our last production, our first on yt, ever. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:28, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
The concert was good. Today: in memoriam Jerome Kohl who said (In Freundschaft): "and I hope that they have met again in the beyond and are making joyous music together". - Can you perhaps help with the lilypond for Draft:Shalom chaverim? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:38, 27 November 2023 (UTC)
Hi Gerda, sorry just seeing these messages now! Yes, happy to help with lilypond, what specifically is needed there? Thanks for the reminder of Prayer for Ukraine! DanCherek (talk) 16:19, 28 November 2023 (UTC)

Copyright bio edit information

Hi Dan. I created the website and wrote the bio that I'm taking the information from. What more do I need to do to be able to use the text that I am the original author of? Thank you. ITperson1 (talk) 21:46, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Hi! There are a few different issues here. Since you are affiliated with the article subject, you should provide the proper disclosure as advised at Wikipedia:Conflict of interest — that means disclosing the relationship on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. Be sure to read that full COI guideline for best practices regarding this.
Previously published content may be released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license by following the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. I will point out, however, that Wikipedia is primarily interested in what reliable sources have to say about a particular subject, not what it says about itself, and articles should be based on reliable, independent, secondary sources. Most of the content that you added to the article was promotionally written and not neutral enough for an encyclopedic article.
Once you have reviewed the conflict of interest guidelines, I recommend suggesting any future edits that you'd like to make on the talk page of the article, using edit requests. You may find the Wikipedia:Edit Request Wizard helpful. Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 21:54, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Belated Merry Christmas Gerda, and I hope you have a Happy New Year! DanCherek (talk) 20:31, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Belated? In German we still have Christmas (a Bach cantata on the Main page), and at Bach's time, there was a third day ;) - We sang my (user's) infobox on Christmas Eve, "singen, singen" ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Heh. I just stopped by the mall and Santa was gone, and they've already started cleaning up the decorations around the Christmas tree. Great photo, and beautiful church! DanCherek (talk) 20:36, 26 December 2023 (UTC)
Grinnning, thank you. 'cause it fits here: I took the lilypond for Hark! The Herald Angels Sing over from fr, and find their display (everything a tad smaller) more pleasing. I couldn't find the secret for the difference, though. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:16, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
I looked at both the English and French articles, and the lilypond displays look the same size to me. Are you using the same skin for both (I was looking at Vector 2010)? There are a few tricks you can try in Lilypond to adjust staff size and font size, e.g. Special:Diff/1193277311. DanCherek (talk) 00:10, 3 January 2024 (UTC)

Phir Subah Hogi / Phir Subha Hogi

@DanCherek I actually tried moving the article but the title I want to use (which by the way is correct, going by the historical records) is rather used as a redirect. Now I can't really move it and hence I used the forbidden cut/paste method. How must I move it since the current title name still stands wrong. Please help me out, or guide me to a better way. GaiusAugustine (talk) 20:57, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

@GaiusAugustine: Because there is prior consensus at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Phir Subha Hogi that the target should be "Phir Subah Hogi" (even if the discussion is quite old), I don't think you should carry out this move on your own as an individual bold action. Instead, it would be best to start a requested move discussion to establish a new consensus that Phir Subha Hogi is the correct title, and that way you can present your sources and evidence for this argument. WP:RSPM has all the information you need about how to start that move discussion on the talk page. Hope that helps! DanCherek (talk) 21:00, 7 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from DrAbanoubRiad (18:08, 10 January 2024)

I want to delete my page Draft: Abanoub Riad. Can you please advise me on how to do so? --DrAbanoubRiad (talk) 18:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi DrAbanoubRiad, I have gone ahead and deleted it per your request. In the future, add {{db-author}} to the top of the page and an administrator will delete it as long as you are the author of the only substantial content on that page. DanCherek (talk) 19:08, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Robert Hampden-Trevor, 1st Viscount Hampden

Hello

I've been updating the page for Frances Barkley , the seafarer. She was a daughter of the Rev John Trevor (1740-1796). He was a child of the Fleet Marriage of the above.

I see an anonymous editor has just added a passage about the marriage to his WP page, but it was promptly delated for no source was given.

It was based on: https://sites.google.com/site/fenwickoflambton/jane-hornby-barkley/barkley-family-tree a most comprehensive website. Can you reinstate the passage, with the source please.

Happy New Year

Apwoolrich

Apwoolrich (talk) 20:02, 2 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi there! I would say that websites hosted on Google Sites are generally not accepted as reliable sources because they are self-published, based on the guidance at WP:SELFPUB. (There is an exception that "[s]elf-published expert sources may be considered reliable when produced by an established subject-matter expert, whose work in the relevant field has previously been published by reliable, independent publications."). So I think it would be good to find a better source. DanCherek (talk) 23:42, 2 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello,
I've revised the deleted section about his marriages with properly referenced sources. Hope this is OK.
If I manage to locate the author of the deleted version I might be possible to expand it. He seems to be associated with the Google Sites effort.
Kind regards
Apwoolrich Apwoolrich (talk) 21:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Worldcall

All the information that was included came from US SEC filings. SEC filings were referred to at the end 96.38.142.245 (talk) 03:28, 12 January 2024 (UTC)

Hmm, so looking further into this I see that EDGAR filings on the SEC website are considered public information, I've undone the revision deletion. However, I still don't think it's appropriate to add to the article, given that it's not independently sourced (we care much more about what an independent, reliable source has to say about the article subject rather than what the subject reports about itself), it's written in first-person voice and not particularly encyclopedic, and it comes across as rather promotional in some parts. DanCherek (talk) 03:36, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
Can you make a suggestion as to how the this should be done. For example Comcast is sourced from public filings. similary if you look at the article itself which you reverted the sources are the annual report of Worldcall which is public information.
SEC filings are reviewed by the US government to make sure they are correct. 2600:6C82:1940:895:F013:E3F2:CEC7:E1E8 (talk) 17:04, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
In reference to the new chairman and CEO that is directly from the annual report of Worldcall 2600:6C82:1940:895:F013:E3F2:CEC7:E1E8 (talk) 17:05, 12 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm saying we shouldn't put sentences like Our analog cable television offers 80+ crystal clear channels, including a wide assortment of satellite and in-house channels with a wide range of movies, news, and documentaries in our articles, and that discussing a company's products should be informed by coverage in independent sources. Thank you! - The 2023 picture is from the Abel Fest in Köthen, celebrating the tercentenary of Carl Friedrich Abel, a viol virtuoso, composer and concert organiser in London (together with Bach's youngest son), born on 22 December 1723 in Köthen, where the new catalogue of his works was introduced, - my story today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:30, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
Could you perhaps help to lilypond for Joy to the World? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:32, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Not really sure at the moment how to add separate lyrics for the tenor/bass around measure 13... DanCherek (talk) 02:20, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much! We sang from it yesterday. How would I omit the third stanza? I remember the note as extra-long, such as a measure longer ;) - I made a small correction to "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" which would also lead to different placement of syllables, for soprano and alto, but think that we altos are flexible enough to adapt ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Third stanza now omitted above. Do you mean the note in the 7th measure ("King"), held for an extra two beats? That's how I've often heard it too. DanCherek (talk) 13:16, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, exactly. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:37, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Added that too. DanCherek (talk) 14:13, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you taken, - please add to article! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:17, 7 January 2024 (UTC)
Hey Gerda, I took a look but am not sure about where to put it or what to do with the existing Lyrics section, and am a bit too busy elsewhere to delve into this. Hello Mr. Cherek:

Question: last year I created a wikipedia page, which was deleted for non notabliity. But it seems to have popped up on Everybodywiki. How can we delete the page from Everybodywiki? I would like to do that for personal privacy ID reasons.

Sincerely, Xavier Serif --Xavier Serif (talk) 15:08, 17 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi Xavier Serif, I am actually not too sure because unfortunately, Everybodywiki takes a very liberal approach to copying stuff from Wikipedia whether or not they should. I looked at their FAQ at en.everybodywiki.com/Everybodywiki:FAQ , and they have a section titled "How to delete an article?" where they indicate that you can contact them if you have privacy conerns related to the subject of the article. I recommend reading that section and then scrolling to the bottom (click the blue square to get their contact info). DanCherek (talk) 02:37, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

International Diabetes Federation page

Hi Dan,

I've been updating the International Diabetes Federation Wikipedia page. I noticed today that you had deleted all the edits made.

Could you tell me why so that I can avoid this happening again?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

Justine DiaAdvo (talk) 10:53, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi DiaAdvo, here are a few different issues here. If you are employed by the International Diabetes Federation, you'll need to provide the proper disclosure according to WP:COIDISCLOSEPAY — that means disclosing the relationship on your user page, on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries. This disclosure is required by the Terms of Use. Be sure to read the policies and guidelines on paid editing and conflicts of interest.
Most of your additions were copied from the IDF's website.
Thank you. DanCherek (talk) 13:27, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
@DanCherek
Thank you for these precisions. I work for the IDF and have repurposed the content from the IDF website.
Thank you for pointing out these conflicts of interest and the procedures to follow. I will take into account your suggestions for future editing. DiaAdvo (talk) 15:28, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

How to make page I want to make page about Kalila finch AminDaBied (talk) 05:44, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi AminDaBied, Wikipedia generally requires that people or things have several reliable, independent sources containing significant coverage of them before an article can be created. Is this the case? DanCherek (talk) 15:13, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

your removal of some material on food system transformation

Hi Dan Thank you for your message and the clarification regarding your editing. That's very useful and I actually looked how I could contact you personally to discuss this. I am the author of these contents and the paper is an open access material where (I believe) the copyrights are still with me (the author) as suggested by the "(c) The Authors" mentioned on the first page of the article. Would that be enough to be acceptable or what else need to be done. I am writing these lines in this Wikipedia page as a way to inform people - I don't have any other agenda. I also noticed you removed my previous input (from Nov). this is the same case. I am the author of these words and here again the original article is an open access material, with again (c)The Authors mentioned on the first page. Looking forward to hearing from you Ch Bene PS this IP is not a shared address 213.136.18.174 (talk) 11:40, 17 January 2024 (UTC) 196.189.58.113 (talk) 15:37, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the message and for your interest in contributing to Wikipedia. There are several issues here. First, there is a standard process to verify that previously published content is being released by the copyright owner into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. This process is outlined at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials § Granting us permission to copy material already online.
However, even if the text is verified and released, there are some other things to note. Since you are adding information from and citing your own work, this constitutes a conflict of interest – as defined by our guideline on that – and so it would be best to disclose that on your user page (if you create an account), on the talk page of the article, or in your edit summaries; or to propose your edits on the talk page using an edit request. I would also say that parts of your previous edits, as directly copied from the publication, were not really appropriate for the Wikipedia article. For instance, we don't use first-person, and I think the proposed section is too long for the subject, since it's important to maintain a balanced approach to overview articles like that one. DanCherek (talk) 15:55, 22 January 2024 (UTC)

Question from ZethyHere on User:ZethyHere/sandbox/NASA Eclipse MegaMovie 2024 (20:54, 23 January 2024)

I've been working on a page for the past few days relating to a project I'm a part of, I would just like a overall review over it, I still have to review it with the group also and see if I need to add more so its likely unfinished. --ZethyHere (talk) 20:54, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi ZethyHere, happy to help. I took a look at your draft and here are some thoughts:
  • The most important consideration for any potential Wikipedia article is the amount of significant coverage that the topic has received in reliable, independent sources. This is how we determine what goes into the article, and even whether it should be an article at all. At present, the draft doesn't really establish the notability of the EM2024 project because the only citations (based on the Further Reading section) are to the project's own website or affiliated (NASA / Sonoma State) websites.
  • The "References" section is rather unconventional for a couple reasons. We don't use first-person voice in Wikipedia, and usually references refer to citations to the sources that directly support the statements given in an article. So for instance you might write The idea of the project was created in 2011, by Hugh Hudson from the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. and then include a citation that links to the website that verifies that.
DanCherek (talk) 00:03, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, I did the references rather quickly and I'll probably properly source them in the next few days and remove the first person. ZethyHere (talk) 04:09, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello Dan, I recently updated my references to have proper citations. I have also added a few more independent sources. I do think as the day of the event gets closer more independents will cover it. Can you do a quick review of the references and further reading? I am assuming I will likely have to use other sources in the references as all of it comes from the projects website. ZethyHere (talk) 17:29, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
Looking better. Yeah, I agree that eventually more independent sources would be really helpful in terms of establishing notability. Also, I notice there is a lot of additional information being presented in the citation itself, which is not how articles are typically formatted (for example, look at the references section of today's featured article, Space Invaders). If it is actually relevant information, it probably belongs in the article body; otherwise, just the citation information (website, publisher, date, etc.) is fine. Henderson State University

Thanks for taking care of that, I did do an initial Google on the content they added but must have missed it! Do you use any tools to detect these sorts of edits? FozzieHey (talk) 23:48, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Hi FozzieHey, thanks for the message. The edit by Tvhall was flagged by the copyvio detector bot and logged at CopyPatrol here, that's how I came across the article. The bot uses the iThenticate plagiarism detection service which is pretty good at picking up things like this. If I'm trying to figure out whether something is a copyright violation, I often find it helpful to Google a random snippet enclosed in quotes (so that it looks for exact matches). For example, try searching "Leaders of the movement, however, became convinced that the interest" (a random phrase I pulled from that edit) with the quotation marks. That will bring you to Henderson State University's website. DanCherek (talk) 23:52, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Oh yeah, and Earwig's CopyVio Detector if you don't already know about it. That comes in handy when you want to investigate a specific article, though it can sometimes struggle with PDFs and other specific types of sources. DanCherek (talk) 23:54, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
That's great thanks. I've heard of Earwig's but CopyPatrol is new to me, looks very interesting and I'll have to check it out. I came across the initial edit on Huggle. It did read a bit self-promotional (which is obvious as to why now), I just reverted it due to a lack of any citations. FozzieHey (talk) 23:57, 7 February 2024 (UTC)

Visited wiki text color

Hello DanCherek, I'm contacting you because I need some help. My wiki got updated and I am disliking the new update with the visited wiki pages text being black instead of purple (if you know what I'm talking about). Do you know how I can get the text back to purple and if you know any other information about the new wiki update as again, I am not liking the new update. Thank you. 👍 Arcadia16 (talk) 23:51, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Hey Arcadia16, when you go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering, which "skin" is selected for you? Based on the information at Help:Link color, the visited link color can vary between skins, but purple should be default for Vector 2022. If you want to use another skin and still have control over link color, Help:Link color § Styling all links just for you gives some sample code for doing that; let me know if you'd like help with implementing something like that. DanCherek (talk) 23:56, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

It is at Vector (2022) and unfortunately the skin is still black, I liked it better when it was purple. Do you know if there is another way to make the skin purple again? Arcadia16 (talk) 00:06, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

@Arcadia16: Try this: Go to Special:MyPage/skin.css and create it with the following code:
.mw-body-content a:visited {color: #795CB2}
and then save the page. DanCherek (talk) 00:13, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

It worked! Thank you so much for the help, DanCherek! Arcadia16 (talk) 00:16, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

No problem, glad it worked. DanCherek (talk) 00:17, 9 February 2024 (UTC)
@Arcadia16: FYI, a lot of people are experiencing the same issue that you described. Thank you for that! - The image, taken on a cemetery last year after the funeral of a distant but dear family member, commemorates today, with thanks for their achievements, four subjects mentioned on the Main page and Vami_IV, a friend here. Listen to music by Tchaikovsky (an article where one of the four is pictured), sung by today's subject (whose performance on stage I enjoyed two days ago). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:53, 20 February 2024 (UTC)
Vami's death is so devastating. Our last private correspondence was right after my RfA started (and about a year after his was withdrawn), where he wished me luck, and told me he knew how stressful it could be and that he was available if I needed to vent about it. He was also the one to explain to me how the {{cv-revdel}} template worked, back in 2021 when I was first getting into copyright cleanup. It's astounding to look back and see how many people in this community he supported and everything he gave to the project in general. I still can't properly express how grateful I am to have known him and how appreciative I am of his impact here. DanCherek (talk) 17:22, 20 February 2024 (UTC)

yes yes yes - can you please say this on his talk, for his sister and others to see? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:30, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
Listen to music from Ukraine if you like, - I heard it in 2022, and the November concert (at a different church) raised a truckload of winter clothes. My story today is also from my life: I heard the singer in 3 of the 4 mentioned musical items. I sang in yesterday's. - Rinaldo (opera) premiered OTD, DYK? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 11:12, 24 February 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for a great three years and for the music. I'm not familiar with Rinaldo but it looks interesting! I didn't know Handel composed about such colorful subjects. DanCherek (talk) 00:42, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you! - I remembered your combination of Prayer for Ukraine and BWV 1. Please watch Rinaldo, - I just reverted a change that I didn't understand. Every composer at the time seems to have dealt with these stories around Orlando, Alcina ... - no idea why. Today's story is a song I find interesting. Is there a way in "score" to make the audio part less obrusive? - I don't know about lilypond for the complete song, because whyle the melody is old the text seems too new. Also, the interesting part - with the crosses! - might get lost in the whole think. The children sing it nicely ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:11, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
Unfortunately, not easily (at least based on my knowledge), because I believe the audio player is controlled not by Lilypond itself, but rather by MediaWiki's Score extension and how it interacts with Lilypond's outputs. DanCherek (talk) 15:22, 25 February 2024 (UTC)
Thank you for explaining! - Today's story celebrates a woman's birthday. She sat right in front of me when I took the picture at a lovely concert, celebrating her son's 60th. I thought she was 90 today, - no, 91 already. You can listen, starting at the piece he dedicated to her, Op. 1. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:42, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Question from Hasandhrubo12115 (06:41, 13 March 2024)

how to i create a notable wiki page for me..? --Hasandhrubo12115 (talk) 06:41, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Hi Hasandhrubo12115, writing an autobiography on Wikipedia is an example of conflict of interest editing and is strongly discouraged. It's difficult to write a neutral, verifiable autobiography, and there are many pitfalls. Please see Wikipedia:Autobiography#Creating an article about yourself for more information.
