Alpheidae sources
Hi Ceranthor,

Kilauea
We talked about this sometime before, but I absolutely cannot do Kilauea without some support. I'm going on vacation in a couple of weeks and for now I'm busy on Hualālai, but it's a looming threat and we got to talk about how we're going to handle it. Howeve I'm leaving for vacation soon, but my internet connectivity there is as my dad says "tenatively good." I think I'll start off by setting up a TOC in a sandbox somewhere. We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were

This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

Ramapo Fault Regional Geology
Hey. Noticed you're in the process of expanding the regional geology section of the Ramapo Fault. I was thinking of the doing the same a while ago, but I kind of put it on the back burner.
I see you've included a bit of detail on the Valley and Ridge Province, but this generally has little to do with the fault. The Ramapo Fault separates the Reading Prong (including the NY-NJ Highlands) from the Newark Basin. The Valley and Ridge Province is beyond the Reading Prong to the northwest and is separated by an unrelated fault. I think the message to send via the regional geology section is that the existence of the Highlands and the Newark Basin is owed to the fault, in the sense that the Ramapo Fault is the main bounding fault in what is essentially a half graben formed during the rifting of Pangaea. One side of the fault, the Newark Basin (east), was thrust down into the Earth, which in turn caused the Highlands (west) to rise up. A map showing the location of the fault in NJ with respect to regional geology can be found here. The aforementioned website, run by Roy W. Schlische at Rutgers University, is particularly informative on both the Newark Basin and Ramapo Fault (the 'normal fault' or 'border fault' described in the site's introduction). Here is the main page of his site.
There is a lot of other information scattered across the web, beyond just the geology, and I really want to bring it together to drive this particular article to true encyclopedic depth.
I eventually hope to create articles or sections for the Hopewell, Flemington, and Chalfont faults, which are the largest secondary faults of the Ramapo Fault System. Any help you could provide here would be awesome.

- I think you're referring to FAC, but for now I think you should nominate it at GAN. Just from browsing the article it looks like it could be expanded some more in order to be fully comprehensive. WikiCup 2010 July newsletter
We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by 
Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

My RFA
It's okay; it doesn't hurt me as much as it hurts the community. Basically all it tells me is that I have zero chance of passing Rfa in the future, because I was blocked two years ago and I have less than an arbitrary number of edits a month. - Yeah, well those images have been removed from the article so the article won't have any problems. Instead, I added File:Mount Cayley volcanic field NASA.png. I am currently collecting information to expand and rewrite the Temagami greenstone belt and Mount Fee articles, but the data is on another computer that currently has fucked up internet so I can't make an easy copy and paste move to the article right now. Hi Ceranthor, I saw you listed as GA mentor. I have not yet participated in this process on either side, and I am a bit afraid of making a fool out of myself. I got Twyfelfontein to DYK this weekend (which did, sadly, not result in a single edit to the page), and I would really appreciate feedback with respect to the following:

- ResMar, I mean this in the best of ways, but you shouldn't be so eager to bring articles to FA. Quality is important, too, and by that I mean the quality of a featured article. Ten times out of ten I'd rather work over a long period to prepare for an FAC if that meant the article turned out better - and if it was easier on me in the end, hehehe. Take your time with these things; as you've told me, going through long FACs is not fun.
Anyway, the article looks quite good. I've promised to muster up whatever pathetic attempt at an image review I can for Black Tusk - which will probably take me hours - and I want to look over the above article, but I'd like to speak with you about what we want to work on. - One of the major sources in the article doesn't pass WP:RS, and rewriting around it would be a major pain. 'Tis the problem with that. I've swallowed the FA pill before, of course. Sure, I'll take a look at it. But I'm afraid these articles are so far outside my areas of expertise that if the article has any obvious potential problems I may have to decline to do a GA review. I simply wouldn't be qualified to do it properly (i.e. since the point of the GA process is to improve the article, just failing an article without giving specific problems and suggestions for improvement would entirely defeat the purpose). I've somewhat cherrypicked Mario's articles at GAN because an initial scan suggested a more thorough review of them would be unlikely to turn up any major issues that I wouldn't be able to concretely address. Anyways, I'll take a look at 1949 Ambato earthquake when I can and review it I feel I'm up to the task.

The article as is looks mostly fine, but it's very short for an article on a natural disaster that killed 5000 people. Compare it with the article on the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Now, granted, one could hardly expect to find such a wealth of source material for the 1949 earthquake in Ambato as for a recent and much publicised event, but even a quick search on Google Books suggests there is actually more material that can be added. For instance, one of the first results that struck me was an “Annual report of the American Bible Society” that suggests “…half of the 1949 circulation [of their magazine, or possibly bibles] was a special order of Portions for the Ambato earthquake victims…”; which would be an excellent point to cover in the article to put it into context. A couple of the other books on the first result page also talk a bit about the rebuilding and such. All in all it looks to me like there is still quite a bit of source material that could be used to expand the article. However, as I mentioned above, I just simply know too little about this area to be qualified to review it properly. Sorry!
As for your contribution to the Shakespeare articles: Nonsense! There's no such thing as junk contributions; just differently useful contributions. :-)
There is such a lot of work to do on improving the Shakespeare-related articles, and so desperately few active editors, that I'm quite certain you can find something that matches your interest, knowledge, and available WikiTime. What immediately spring to mind are the articles on the individual sonnet articles—most of whom are barely even stubs—and articles on the various articles on individual characters from the plays. The articles on characters are a tiny bit more developed than the average sonnet article, but both sets of articles are mainly stubs and you can probably find decent sources to expand them without too much effort. For the sonnets you'll probably find a whole bunch of material in a critical edition (Arden or Oxford, typically) of the Sonnets in a single book. And for some contentious issues just having another voice weigh in on a discussion can be incredibly valuable in itself, even if you don't have the time or inclination to write a lot of article content yourself.
Anyways, I'm sorry I couldn't be more help with your earthquake article; but do let me know if I can help in any way in any area I'm actually qualified to hold an opinion on. Cheers, --Xover (talk) 01:51, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Review: 1949 Ambato earthquake
Hi Ceranthor, I'll take a shot at reviewing this -- partly as returning a favour, though I will not be "nicer" than to anyone else, :) partly because I see some logic in the argument "if you place an article at GAN, consider reviewing one", and partly because I hope to get "mentor input" on reviewing as well.
I already have a question re: the reviewing process. This essay suggests the reviewer should if possible fix (minor) things in the nominated article rather than pointing them out, but I hardly ever see this done. - By that standard they mean that you go over the page and copyedit minor things, slight coding changes, etc. Larger stuff, like expansion and source work, are to be done by the editor. The reason for this is that the minor work takes a lot less effort fixing yourself then pointing it out on the GAN page. ResMar 19:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

- I've done some editing for wording. Other than that, two more suggestions: first, I still think that "political rationality" could be better explained. - Well, there is some of that, but there's also some straight content overlap - for example: the "Impact" subsection overlaps with later sections; compare the information given about hospitals in the first and third paragraphs of Relief efforts; compare the information about people dying before rescuers arrive in Impact and Relief efforts; compare the first paragraph of Aftermath to earlier sections. Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. - Because the existing article title is a redirect to the current one, and copy-pasting would be a violation of edit history preservation. So you need to delete the redirect and then move the article, something I'm not priveleged enough to do. As threatened, a few questions for you:
- I notice that there's no indication of the financial cost of the earthquake, unless I missed it somewhere.
- Background
- "Other notable landmarks in the city include the Monumento a La Primera Imprenta, Museo de Ciencias Naturales,[7] and the Parque Juan Montalvo." The relevance of this is not immediately obvious to me.
- Since 1949, several major earthquakes have taken place ...". In Ecuador or elsewhere?
- "Closer to the Andes, intraplate earthquakes such as those in March 1987 pose a significant threat, as they can be much more powerful." Much more powerful than what?
- "These earthquakes are usually associated with landslides, subsidence, and even liquefaction." Which earthquakes? Intraplate ones?
- "This would explain why there are northwest-southeast and northeast-southwest-trending faults in the region ..." Not sure why you've used "would explain" here, as it implies an element of doubt. Does it explain it or not? And what exactly does the "this" that starts off the sentence refer back to?
- Damage and casualties
- "When the main shock hit (its epicenter was southeast of Ambato), Ambato's main cathedral and military barracks collapsed (in the cathedral scores of young girls preparing for their communions were killed), as did most of the city's buildings." This doesn't really work, and the two parenthetical comments look a bit awkward. Why not turn the second of them into a footnote? Also, "main" cathedral implies that there were other cathedrals, were there?
- "As far as Quito and Quayaquil, shaking up to intensity IV was felt." How far away is that?
- Relief efforts
- "The mayor of Miami along with 7 other politicians began a fund-raising campaign for medicinal needs and clothing, and dropped 152 pounds of Rexall drugs." So the mayor dropped the drugs?
- "A fund-raising effort collected 250,000 Ecuadorian sucres". Was this an international or a national fund-raiser?
- "Sick victims were quarantined to the city." Does this mean inside the city, i.e., they weren't allowed to leave the city?
- Aftermath
- "The earthquake's impact on Ambato and Pelileo was tremendous". I don't doubt it was, was if you want to use a term like that it's best to quote and cite it.
- "The once charming city of Ambato ...". Similarly here, in whose opinion was Ambato "charming"?
- "In the days following the earthquakes, aftershocks continually occurred." Is "continually" right? There was never an instant without an aftershock? Is what's really meant here "repeated aftershocks"?
- "Torrential rains added to the effect." Added to the effect of what?
Now or never...
I'm going to list Mauna Kea asap, or rather as soon as my godamned internet connection works out (translation: I get a new laptop and don't have to use the crappy, loaded, demanded family comp). WikiCup 2010 October newsletter
The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. The Armero tragedy was the major consequence of the November 13, 1985, eruption of Nevado del Ruiz in Tolima, Colombia. After 69 years of quiet the eruption caught nearby towns unaware, even though the government had received warnings to evacuate the area from multiple volcanological organizations when volcanic activity had been detected in September 1985. As pyroclastic flows erupted from the volcano's crater, they melted the mountain's glaciers, sending four enormous lahars (volcanically induced mudslides, landslides, and debris flows) down its slopes at 60 kilometers (37 mi) per hour. The lahars picked up speed in gullies and coursed into the six major rivers at the base of the volcano; they engulfed the town of Armero, killing more than 20,000 of its almost 29,000 inhabitants. Photographs of the lahars and the impact of the disaster captured attention worldwide and led to controversy over the degree to which the Colombian government was responsible for the disaster. Premature block message
A question I have had for a long time is that "test4" says you will be blocked the next time you vandalize. "test5", the next level up, gives a block message which (for me) is not really valid. Not sure what to leave in this "in between" case. Another level 4 doesn't seem to make sense, but a level 5 jumps the gun. Leaving nothing leaves no clue to the admin investigating the request.
So what should I leave on the user's site after s/he has exceeded his level 4 (test4) message? Thanks. Student7 (talk) 20:16, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

I've started taking a look at this, as you asked, and I've got a few questions. I haven't finished yet, probably tomorrow, but this is what I've noticed so far, more to follow later:
- Lead
- I can't understand the lead image caption: "Mount Thielsen from Diamond Lake with its eroded crater". Whose eroded crater are we talking about? The lake's or the mountain's? Is the lake anything to do with the mountain (e.g., a volcanic crater), or does it just happen to be close by?
- History"
- "Apart from study, Thielsen and the rest of the Crater Lake area features heavily into nineteenth and early twentieth century exploration." I have no idea what that's trying to say.
- "Nye recalled an expedition of gold prospectors where they passed a lake of deep blue color." I can't quite make sense of that either.
- "In late 1865 two hunters ventured upon the lake and their sighting became pervasive." What on Earth does that mean? This whole section needs some serious work.
- Ecology
- "Above the timberline whitebark pine predominates." If there are whitebark pine, then in what sense is it a timberline? Incidentally, the Whitebark Pine article tends to use that capitalisation, although admittedly not consistently; sometimes it's Whitebark pine. I've raised a question on that article's talk page.

WikiCup 2011 January newsletter
We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. Signups are now closed, and we have 129 listed competitors, 64 of whom will make it to round two. Congratulations to 
The Bushranger (submissions), who, at the time of writing, has a comfortable lead with 228 points, followed by 
Hurricanehink (submissions), with 144 points. Four others have over 100 points. Congratulations also go to 
Yellow Evan (submissions), who scored the first points in the competition, claiming for Talk:Hurricane King/GA1, 
Miyagawa (submissions), who scored the first non-review points in the competition, claiming for Dognapping, and 
Jarry1250 (submissions) who was the first in the competition to use our new "multiplier" mechanic (explanation), claiming for Grigory Potemkin, a subject covered on numerous Wikipedias. Thanks must also go to Jarry1250 for dealing with all bot work- without you, the competition wouldn't be happening!
A running total of claims can be seen here. However, numerous competitors are yet to score at all- please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. The number of points that will be needed to reach round two is not clear- everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
