inappropriate

I thought this message of yours was inappropriate and I think you should revert it. (I tried reverting it myself, but an edit filter stopped me). The poor guy is getting hassled enough already, and while you may have put a lot of effort into making the christmas card, slapping the transclusion template onto his usertalk with AWB took basically zero effort on your part and so you should not feel entitled to a claim on his attention from it. While gestures like the Christmas card can be nice in some situations, they can also come across as spam, or as attempts to turn Wikipedia into Myspace. With respect, I disagree. Some of Weiterbewegung's messages to me have been quite uncivil or inappropriate, but I let it slide and responded trying to tone the situation down, to which he continued to be rude (I can provide diffs if you wish). I decided it would be nice and a good way to try and improve relations with him by including him on my list. And it definitely was not 'zero effort', it took hours of messaging, emailing, form-filling, negotiating, designing, testing, uploading, and finally delivering. Giving out Christmas cards is a normal and accepted practice on enwiki, and is not spammy or myspacey. Above this thread you can see an abundance of thanks, none complaining. I'm not demanding he re-instate it, I'm just asking for some kind of explanation. Thanks, Acather96 (talk) 09:02, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

I don't think he owes you an explanation, and your asking for one is just more hassle for him. It's quite common for new Wikipedia editors to bring (sometimes uncivil) interaction styles with them from other parts of the internet, until they get used to the way we do things here. So WP:BITE would seem to say that when a newbie is uncivil, you should at most just explain to them that we try to maintain a friendlier style here, while being civil yourself. I've had fairly good luck with that approach (example), though it requires putting yourself in the right frame of mind, which isn't always easy.

As for your christmas card, the effort of creating it is completely separate from the effort of delivering it (an AWB template splat), and you should (by definition) not expect a new editor to be cognizant of "normal and accepted practice on enwiki". Also, he didn't complain, he just removed it, just like I throw away the physical cards I get from various companies I do business with. I don't mind getting them--they're nice cards--but I know that they're printed in quantity and spewed to a mailing list and are not really personalized gestures, so they don't exactly set my heart a-flutter (and the sender knows better than to expect them to). Of course if you had made up a special card just for him and it was clear you had done so, you'd probably have gotten a more appreciative response. 67.122.209.190 (talk) 09:42, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

We have probably lost Weiterbewegung, and it looks like he was already pretty fed up when he wrote those messages, so we won't ever know whether things might have gone differently. Wikipedia interaction is like a dialect that takes a while to learn, so you shouldn't expect anyone to change their style too quickly. Recent FURing

Hey. While I'm certainly one who considers adding FURs an important job, adding copy-paste FURs to a large number of files is somewhat counter-productive. None of the FURs for the images in Johann Mouse explain why the screenshots are needed, and they're full of vague language. As for the FUR you added for File:John & Yoko.jpg; it is used in an article about a protest, not an article about the film in question. J Milburn (talk) 12:31, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

Hi J Milburn. First of all sorry for the late response.You're right that some of the FUR's I've added are a bit vague, (or in the case of the last example), blatantly incorrect. I've recently been mass-adding logo furs after Courcelles mass-nominated hundreds of them for deletion, while most of them are easy to write using FurMe, it seems I got a bit careless with some of the images you nommed. Churchill Machine Tool Company

Thanks for tidying up weblinks etc in the above entry. I deliberately did not include the company logo or details of its website because there is some confusion surrounding the relationship of the present day company to that which is the subject of the article. It could even be that the full name of the present day company is something like "The Churchill Machine Tool Company (2011) Ltd". I noted this issue on the article Talk page, along with an anecdotal explanation of sorts.

You are clearly more experienced than me with WP but I am a little concerned that the present day company might find something legally and/or commercially challenging about the article as it stands. I would much prefer to somehow get a note of the anecdotal points into the main body of the article (even as a link to my point on the Talk page) but cannot be sure whether this is possible or even sensible. Hi Sitush. While we can't directly link to threads on talk pages, I think the info could possibly included in the article, on two conditions:

• That it can satisfy WP:V - we can back up what we say with reliable sources.
• It does not constitute original research - we should be careful if unsure, that we don't try to draw our own conclusions.

Help with tagging a film promotional still

A film promotional still I'd uploaded-- File:How people got fire tish.jpg -- has been deleted because it wasn't tagged correctly. It was pretty easy to find, at http://onf-nfb.gc.ca/eng/collection/film/images-gallery.php?id=57017. However since I am relatively new at this, I do not know how to determine what information and tag is needed, or if I can re-instate the image.

FYI, the image wasn't actually deleted because it had an incorrect copyright tag, it did not explain how it qualified under fair use and met WP:NFCC. In short, it lacked a fair use rationale. Andrew Mensaros

Thank you for your kind additions to the entry on Andrew Mensaros. You seem to be aware of where he was educated. Debrett's Handbook of Australia says University of Budapest Vienna but this doesn't seem to be correct. I had a teacher once (now deceased, he's mentioned in WP) who claimed to have a PhD from the University of Budapest. He did an MA at the University of Melbourne which was conferred in 1954, and wrote a book on immigration to Australia. He went to Canada and died there about ten years ago and it was claimed on a web site that he left Hungary in 1956, which clearly isn't correct. I suspect Hungarians say University of Budapest because it is easy to read in English rather than the lengthy name in Hungarian.

While your probably right regarding the name of the university, the alumni category at this moment in time is under the rather lengthy name, and while the article can use the English term, I can't change the category. Thanks Acather. I'd prefer to use the Hungarian term. I don't want to change it. I spoke to one of my Hungarian friends today about this but he didn't seem to know, as he left Hungary in 1956. I think the Hungarian name is better (even with spelling problems)than the term that seems to be used in English. A lot of Australians like to say they went to university in Sydney or Melbourne without saying which one, and outside of Australia no one would know. Hungarians who did undergraduate study in Budapest may be in the same category. I do not know, and don't wish to denigrate anyone. I think the subject is best left alone, at least by me. Uploading a screenshot from Who Framed Roger Rabbit to the Elmer Fudd article

Hi. I got your message and Bkell's other message about the screenshot I was trying to add to the Elmer Fudd article. Specifically what was wrong with it? The fact I got it from a Youtube.com video clip from the movie, the fact I drew a circle on it, or the fact it wasn't a better quality resolution? Why is it illegal to show screenshots of movie clips from Youtube.com? I'd like to upload another screenshot from the movie and add it to the Elmer Fudd article- how should I do that? I don't have a DVD of the movie and I don't know to make screenshots from DVDs or VHS tapes. Other people have screenshots of cartoons they added to the article. I also keep trying to provide links to sources to verify his appearance in the movie-why does that keep being edited? Can you please help me out? Thank you. Please have a look at the pages, and make any changes/suggestions you feel are necessary. I think the project's main problem is simply a lack of editors - I'm planning to try and see if the Signpost would like to run an interview, and maybe post a message on the Community Portal, or on our sister/parent projects? FYI, I rated the article you submitted for assessment as Start-Class. Hi Tom and thanks for contributing to Wikipedia :). You need to pick a licensce to release the images under, and then indicate that using a copyright tag. I read your most recent comments about copyright images. I have the written permission of Joe Piersen to use the three images (two photos and a map) scanned from his book. They were scanned so that future copies would be of little value to others.

I did not see a copyright section that includes where we have permission of the author to reuse the work.

Orienta (album)

Please clarify why you have removed text from this article. The material you removed consists of the following:

• Two brief quotes from the Space Age Pop web site totaling approximately 30 words as follows: While the album includes "hi-fi effects such as sirens and dropped ball bearings and a range of exotic percussion" to create humorous vignettes. ... However, one later account noted that "Fried really intended the album to be something of a satire on the then-current craze for musical harem-haunting." These brief quotes include quotation marks and citations to the Space Age Pop web site. Is it your contention that a 30-word excerpt from the publication exceeds the limits of fair use??????
• Three quotes taken from the album's liner notes, each of which is in quotations and directly cited to the liner notes. You state that the quotes are from a web site called 317x.com, but that is incorrect. The quotes are actually from the album's liner notes, i.e., a written set of notes issued by the music label to accompany the album. It appears that the only "infringement" may be by the 317x.com web site which has quoted the FULL text of the liner notes without citation. In preparing an article about a historically significant work of music, it is my understanding that selective quotations from the liner notes is consistent with fair use rights. Such material is also of critical importance in conveying the artist's purpose/intentions with respect to the work. Do you contend that none of the excised material from the liner notes is proper???? Is there a word count (or percentage of word count) limit that you have used in making your edit?

Hi Cbl62, and first of sorry for the late response. Wikipedia's non-free content criteria permits use of non-free copyrighted material when it is well cited (which in fairness, your addition was), is used sparingly and adds significantly to the reader's understanding of the subject of the article. A whole paragraph from the album's liner notes is - I believe - to be excessive, especially when the text in use is somewhat promotional and vague. Again, with the second paragraph, it doesn't really add much to the article, and the quote could either be shortened to one sentence or expressed originally - the same with the first quote. I'm open to discussion, and if you feel that we can't reach an adequate conclusion here, it might be worth taking it to a higher forum. Thanks :), Acather96 (talk) 19:29, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Ah, I didnt known that. I dont think it is a big problem though. There are only a few I translated word for word. Most of the other times I just use the other wikipedia article as a source, rather than really translating the whole article. I will add the template to the two articles I know I translated though. Bacon Challenge 2011 coming to a close

Dear ever-so-valiant Bacon Challenge 2011 participant:

Almost a year ago, the Bacon Challenge 2011 kicked off for the third year in a row with the annual mission of expanding and bettering Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. We are almost at the end of this year's Bacon Challenge, which ends on March 1st. I am pleased to say that, during this time period, Bacon Challenge participants have done a great job. Ten new pages have been created. Two articles have been granted the status of being good articles. Over one hundred reliable sources have been placed into articles, and over 7,500 words have been added. Six articles have been featured on Wikipedia's main page under the "Did you know..." section. These are all excellent results.

The Bacon WikiCup has also been exciting to watch. Contributors have been racking up more and more points as the deadline approaches. As I post this message, Worm That Turned is in the lead, with Cirt in second, and Acather96 in third. Cirt currently has created the most new pages, while Worm That Turned has done the most work in expanding articles and achieving DYKs. Acather96 has done the most work with image uploads. Remember, while the Bacon Challenge is ending in just a few days, it's not too late to make any last-minute contributions to get a few more Bacon WikiCup points. Everyone who contributes at least something will earn a virtual commemorative medal, so if you haven't contributed anything bacon-related to Wikipedia, now's your chance. Contributions can be submitted up until the end of March 7th, but only for contributions that were done before the beginning of March. The extra week is provided for participants to report any last-minute contributions, and to allow for any contributions that require a timely process (such as a good article or DYK nomination) to go through. At the end of the event, scores for the Bacon WikiCup will be completed and re-checked, and prizes will be distributed. Hi Andres arg. In future, if you see a problem with an article - for example, if it is unreferenced -, you can add a cleanup tag to the page instead. You can find a list here. Hobson Lake Wells Gray.jpg photo

Permission from BC Parks to use this photo actually dates back to the mid-1990s so it predates Wikipedia. I have published the photo in my books and used it numerous times in public slide shows. I can ask BC Parks for permission specifically for Wikipedia. I don't understand what "self-cc-by" means (since I'm a new contributor). Hi Roland Neave. Photos on Wikipedia must be licensed under a free license - e.g they can be freely re-used and modified by anybody in the world. And while I'm not doubting you have permission, that permission only extends to Wikipedia - and henceforth the file isn't 'free'. The 'self cc-by' is shorthand for a file that was released under the Creative Commons Attribution License, and created by the uploader - and thats the tag on your image. But as you've said, you haven't created the image yourself, and you would need to get permission from BC Parks to release the file under the Creative Commons Attribution License (see here). That license is irrevocable, and does mean that the image can be used an modified by anyone in the world, without royalties - under the condition that the creator was sufficently attributed. I'm wondering if you possible could help me. I left Wiki in 2007 (personal) and I have an account that I would like to keep, however, I no longer have the e-mail my Wiki account is linked to, nor do I remember my pw. OK. What you can do is, first of all create a new account. It doesn't really matter what you call it, as you will only have to make one or two edits with it (hopefully!). Then, head over to Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations, and file a request, asking to usurp Planetary Chaos. You'll have to explain the situation in detail, and you might have to find some way to prove that you are the same person. Hopefully, your request will be approved, and your new account can be renamed to 'Planetary Chaos'. You will then be 'in control' of your new account.
