This is a list of FIPS region codes, as listed in FIPS standard 10-4. The names for regions in these articles follow the general convention 

[name of region] [type of region], [country]

with exceptions where the formulation [name of region] [type of region] is at odds with local usage (for example, in Ireland, "County Cork" is correct, not "Cork County").

Region names should be linked to pre-existing Wikipedia articles wherever possible, although in some cases the FIPS regions may not be identical to current local definitions of those areas, for example because of local government reorganization, or errors in the FIPS classification.

Where possible, correct accents have been restored to region names, although links to articles on the English Wikipedia are still constrained by the ISO-8859-1 character set currently used. Where link accents have been removed because of this limitation, all accents have been removed. not just those outside ISO-8859-1, but all accented characters remain in the link label.
