Castles in France

I have been working through articles on French castles, including improvements to the List of castles in France page, with a few other editors. This has involved identifying, linking to and eventually translating suitable articles from the French wiki; removing from the list those châteaux that are actually palaces, stately homes or vineyards; where possible, creating new pages.

I have recently come across an article on the Château de Morimont, spelled Château du Morimont, which I wanted to move to the correct spelling as given by the French Ministry of Culture and to expand. Now, the Min of Culture website (a fantastic resource by the way) lists TWO castles with similar names in the correct location, Oberlag [1]:

a) Château fort de Morimont [2]

b) Ruines du château de Morimont [3]

So, can anyone help with this? I am happy to write the article using the Min of Culture as the main reference, but I am worried as to whether there are in fact two distinct castles, or is one built within the other or what? Help Request

I'm currently working on the biography of Jarvis Offutt, a WWI American flyer who was killed in France in 1918. Sources list his place of death at either Valheureuv or Valheureux, France, a community I am unable to locate or find any references for. Would anyone on this WikiProject happen to know if the locality has been spelled incorrectly, if the name has changed sometime in the past century (or it's been abandoned or annexed into a larger community), or if it's simply so insignificant that no mention is listed anywhere? Hi Tim- I took a quick look on fr.wikipedia and it seems Valheureux is a defunct place name from the Somme, now apparently part of a community called Candas. fr:Valheureux redirects to the Candas article. The Valheureux page links to a category of former Somme communities, which list a few hundred former communities from that department. I'll bet it's what you're looking for--you can go to Google Maps and enter "candas, somme, france" into the search field to see if the location looks right. Another (although the issue is very minor) help request

French thé pronounced as English tay (rhymes with day). French au pronounced as English owe (rhymes with toe). Emeraude 16:05, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

They don't really rhyme though, French pronouciation is very flat. thé is pronounced teh. au, oh (flat and short). Like most latin languages we don't really have nasal sounds like ay or owe. Anyhoo, doesn't matter. Saebhiar Adishatz 17:04, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

You're right, they don't rhyme exactly, but they are near enough for an English speaker to get a very close approximation of the French pronunciation. I tried to give English words which could be put together to give a close feel (so your 'teh' may be more accurate but is actually unpronouncable in English). But, as you say, it doesn't matter. The original request from User:Jokes Free4Me was for an audio or IPA - both of which would of course be more precise and I hope someone can eventually provide these. Wikipedia:WikiProject Catalan-speaking Countries Wikipedia:WikiProject Spain and Andorra

As I said before with an other user Andorra is more closely related to Spain than to France and even more to the ofher catalan spea king areas (it's the only country were catalan is the unique official language) so the articles about this country should be transfered in one of those projects or in both. I repeat that it's not a nationalist or regionalist point of view (I'm french) just a realistic statement --Kimdime69 00:45, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Andorra is an independent state, member of the UNO, so I see no reason for it to be included in the French portal, which regards about places from France.

Otherwise, Andorra's official language is Catalan, so it would be expected to include Andorra in the Catalan portal, since this regards the Catalan-speaking area.

In case Andorra was included in the French portal due to the fact that there are many French speakers in that state, we could include in the French portal articles about Belgium, Canada or Tunisia as well. Aren't French speakers there?

As mentioned before Andora and Monaco were proposed to be included in this project by badbilltucker as no other separate suitable wikiprojects were existing at that time. Small alteration to your banner

As some of you may know, there's been some discussion regarding the number of WikiProject banners on article talk pages. There are three projects underway that attempt to "reduce the clutter". The first, of course, is the "small" option - see Small option for more info. The second is {{WikiProjectBanners}}, which hides all the banners in a one-line box. As has been discussed on that template's talk page, this option has the disadvantage of hiding WikiProject banners, which defeats one of the purposes - to recruit new members. The third option is {{WikiProjectBannerShell}}, which addresses that issue by reducing each banner to one line (with the option to view the full banner).

Now the reason I'm bringing this up is because adopting this third option requires a small alteration of a WikiProject's banner - to add the "nested=yes" parameter. I'd like to determine consensus within this project around the change and see if we can move forward with it. I've put together a sample of your banner with the new option coded in (code). As you can see, there would be no change to the banner if the "nested" parameter isn't there. If it *is* there, the banner would be part of the "within the scope of the following projects..." box.

Several projects have already implemented this option, including WP:MILHIST, WP:LGBT, WP:ALBUM, WP:India, WP:AVIATION, and WP:CCM.

Propose new cat - french language media

I propose creating a new Category:French-language media which could possibly include the current sub-cats for French-language films, French-language newspapers, French language songs, French-language literature, as well as containing articles on French-language TV shows and radio programmes which currently have no home. Tintin in Wikiproject FRANCE???

A Frenchman living in Brussels, and an occasional fan of the cartoon "Tintin", I can't believe this project is part of Wikiproject France. It doesn't even take long on the Tintin page to realize that Tintin is all about Belgium. The author is Belgian, the character is Belgian, hell, even the cartoon about European colonial era is "Tintin in Congo", which used to be... Belgian! It would be better under Wikiproject Belgium, if it exists.87.65.169.134 06:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)

There is currently no WikiProject Belgium. While the inclusion on The Adventures of Tintin (which are hugely popular in France) in WikiProject France may be unjustified due to the reasons you cite (including the Belgian nationality of the author Georges Remi aka Hergé), it should be noted (1) that the live-action and animated movies based on the Tintin books have been largely French productions and (2) that one generally refers to Franco-Belgian comics to cover the shared bande dessinée tradition of the two countries. Plausible misinformation

I have noticed an increase in vandalism using "plausible misinformation" on pages lately, including the use of plausible sounding references (with spurious publication data) and statistics. I encourage editors to always review changes to their watchlist pages and, if possible, to verify the information. Once misinformation sneaks into an article and becomes obscured by later edits, it is more difficult to correct the damage. -- NYArtsnWords 00:03, 31 March 2007 (UTC)

Move {{WikiProject France}} to {{WPFR}}?

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to move/rename our tag from the long "WikiProject France" to something shorter, like "WPFR"? This would make it a lot easier when tagging articles and also, it's starting to become a norm with country specific projects (see: {{WPES}}, {{WPTR}}, {{WPGR}}, {{WPAM}}, etc.). Tagging of France-related articles has been mostly done by STTWbot on a regular basis. Also a script already exist which was suggested by me before, which makes tagging really easy. So I don't see a need of moving the template just for the reason suggested above. STTW (talk) 17:46, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

I'm familiar with the bot but, many times I find myself tag an article manually and the Outriggr script messes the formatting of the top of articles (in FF, at least). Anyway, I thought it may be good idea. --Kimon^talk 19:21, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

Absinthe in WikiProject France

I don't know much about how the WikiProjects work so I'll just put this here in hopes someone with more knowlage will come along.

The absinthe page is now part of the WikiProject on Switzerland and I think that it should also be part of the French WikiProject. As, although abisnthe was first made in Swizterland, it is more commonly associated with France and French culture and cuisine. Scaper8 17:42, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

There have been many changes in the project since its inception. Lately there was a step towards integrating the various France related projects - Paris streets. A number of Offenbach's operetta articles have recently been improved, but most of the information available is in French. Can any French speakers take a look and add info from some of the French internet sources, or, perhaps, translate some of the articles on Offenbach's operettas from French Wikipedia and add the info here? Chirac & Sarkozy

Same problem with G8, where editors continue to jump the gun. I can't see any way of preventing it other than vigilance and reverts, but the problem will resolve itself naturally within a week. It does, though, raise an interesting question: how many times will George W Bush be edited out in the two months between the presidential election in Nov 2008 and the inauguration in Jan 2009?!! France national rugby union team peer review

The article is about the national rugby union team. Please add your comments here. This article was the WikiProject Rugby union collaboration of the fortnight recently, and is a featured article on French language wikipedia (see here). When the collaboration was over I nominated it for GA and it passed without any problems. • fr:Catégorie:Personne victime de violations des droits de l'homme (in english, see Category:Victims of human rights abuses)

How do you feel about that ?

Echoing Phsyschim62's point above, since this is the English Wikipedia, we should be dedicated to the issues and debates going on here (there are plenty). I'm guessing many (if not most) members of this project are not active members in the French Wikipedia, though they may have accounts there or peruse it for articles to translate over to English.

One more thing, I doubt the French Wikipedia is "suppressing" anything. It appears they are debating whether those categories should be deleted or not. Suppressing is not compatible with open dialog and is equivalent to censorship. --Kimon^talk 13:38, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Issues with the Commune map

I'm having trouble getting the map to place things just right; I'm not sure if there's something I need to change. I've made two articles, Serbonnes and Cry, Yonne with this problem. Anyone know how to fix it? matt91486 00:14, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

You must change the values for the lines that say x = and y = . These values represent the position on the map in pixels from the top left corner.

Also maybe you know this already, but normally for the coordinates people use degrees, minutes and seconds on wikipedia, not decimal value, it might not be a requirement though I don't know. Jackaranga 06:37, 7 June 2007 (UTC)

Arrondissements of ...

I recently prodded Arrondissements of the Eure department while hitting random article, because I felt as it was already in a category Category:Arrondissements of Eure and contained little additional information, it was somewhat pointless. The prod was taken off by Kiwipete, and during our discussion I discovered there are not only over a hundred of these Arrondissements of... but they're also all listed in List of arrondissements of France. I really, really don't think that we need over a hundred articles telling us what can be easily found in various categories and an entire List, and I propose either we merge and redirect or delete them altogether. As the WikiProject for such matters, I agree with Kiwipete that it should be discussed by you first. DevAlt 09:30, 12 June 2007 (UTC)

National football teams - please vote

I've discovered that some editors have decided that the football teams of some French regions should be called "national teams". So now we have articles such as Corsica national football team, Guadeloupe national football team, Brittany national football team, as if Corsica, Guadeloupe, or Britanny were independent nations! They've done the same with other countries (Andalucia national football team, Cornwall national football team, etc.). I've tried to replace the word "national" with the word "regional", but I was immediately reverted and I was told that supposedly there exists a consensus to use the word "national". Since I can't find such consensus on the talk pages, I opened a vote to remove the word "national" from the titles, as this word seems extremly POV. A couple of times in the past, Mesoso2 has moved this article to Districts of France, and made corresponding changes to the text. Each time, I have reverted the text changes and restored the article to its current title. After the last edit, I left a note with Mesoso2 explaining my reasons for undoing his/her changes, and he/she has now left a reply on my talk page. Low Contributor Traffic

Is there any way to get more traffic to France-related en.wikipedia articles - perhaps some francophone editors could help? There only seem to be a few key contributors in this area, or at least on the "Paris-oriented" articles I have been working on. After an intense period of contribution (and with others managing to raise the level of the Paris article to A+ status) I left off editing to give others a chance - but practically nothing has changed save the layout. I'd really like to see the Paris article raise to FA status, and for that it would be better to work as many, not few.

The low traffic is the cause of another problem, namely a lack of consensus: if but one opposing contributor is unwilling to discuss or reason, any editing conflict becomes a one-on-one edit war. There doesn't seem to be a high level of knowledge on subjects "France" in English wikipedia, a fact that makes an even greater mess when, to resolve a such conflict, one resorts to an RfC. For this it is possible for a stubborn few with too much time on their hands to basically write what they like in these articles, much to the disdain of Wikipedia's reputation; there are many "facts" present here (and Wiki scraper sites) that cannot be found in any official publications or mainstream references elsewhere. The result is perhaps something that "sounds good" to more ignorant international readers, but it is not fact, and this is not good for Wiki. THEPROMENADER 08:57, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi, just wondering if the members here still considered European Parliament as under Wikiproject France? It was added by a bot ages ago but it seems to me more under just the EU, as one of its core topics, while it would be a minor topic for France. I made a typo in the title of the page for Luynes (Bouches-du-Rhones) - there is no 's' at the end of 'Rhone' (and there is an accent, as in Rhône, although I am not certain the accent should appear on the English Wikipedia - since English keyboards don't have them). Requested Articles

I've been doing some work tracking down frequently redlinked articles pertaining to France. My current project is putting together a list of Cabinet Ministers without articles if anyone is interested. Looking at what links to them should tell you which cabinets they were in and with which positions. Any of those would be a good topic for a new article. One I finish with the cabinet ministers, I may work on the municipalities and/or natural features still needing articles, just to give some options for people to work on. Need assistance with non-factual info being re-introduced to page(s)...

I have, on several occasions, edited out non-Lafayette escadrille pilots from the Lafayette escadrille page. I have shown and posted my source documents which are reference-grade materials written by the folks *in* the actual squadron.

What do we have to do to lock SaintAlban's revisionism off of the page? Am I going about the editing process incorrectly? Should I just conceed that Wikipedia really *doesn't* have accuracy of articles as a priority?

Sarcasm aside, the revert that prompted Escadrille Americaine's quest for assistance here was made by me. No sourced documents had been shown or posted on Talk:Eugene Bullard at all, no inline reference existed in the article, and the removal of the category went without edit summary. Flag of pre-Revolution France

After some reading-up on the subject of flags of the Kingdom of France on various Wikipedias and the Flags of the World website, (not the most reliable of sources, I know) I realized that the notion of a national French flag does not really exist before the Revolution. Nevertheless, there are several different designs in use all over the project. I wrote a summary over at Template talk:Country data France.

There is a pair of naval ensigns officially used from the 17th century onward that seems to have been the de-facto flags of the French kings and therefore ("L'État, c'est moi") the flags of the French state of the era: (c.f. fr:Drapeau du royaume de France)

Using the plain white design to represent France might prove controversial, though, due to its likeness to the white flag of truce. So in the end, I suggest we use the fleur-de-lis ensign to represent France under the House of Bourbon where a flag is expected (e.g. conflict infoboxes etc.) It was in fact also the official national flag during the Bourbon Restorations [4] and seems to be a fairly well accepted symbol of the French state of this era. Request for suggestions

Hi, I'm putting together some images for a table on EU cities. I want to try to break from the cliché of landmarks or skylines, as it is on population I am trying to find some images that include the people of those cities and day-to-day life in that city. For example, the London images I've found are along the lines of the tube (everyone uses it and it is iconic), parks (a third of London is green) and markets. I was wondering if you guys knew of some good images that symbolise the people's Paris so to speak? Or at least tell me of something typical and this very much a part of the city, even if it is just like a typical street. If you know of something, please drop a note on my talk page. Emile or Émile Coué?

There's some disagreement on the Talk:Émile Coué page over whether the accent belongs over the first "E" in his name. I did a Google search, including a Google search of French language sites and didn't see the accent over the E, except in the French Wikipedia and Wikisource. If someone is certain about it (based on a really reliable source), please change it. The article name should be changed as well in that case. Hello. Though in French accents are optional on uppercase letters (there is no key for them on a standard French keyboard) the correct spell is É. In the Académie Française dictionnary, accents are kept on uppercase letters. Cathedral naming conventions

Starting several weeks ago, User:HeartofaDog has changed the name of every cathedral on the List of cathedrals in France, from the normal French or even English name, to [City] Cathedral. For example, Cathédrale Saint-Jean de Lyon has been changed to Lyon Cathedral, Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, Nantes has been changed to Nantes Cathedral, and so on.

The two problems with this are, first of all that in almost all cases the French name or direct English translation is much better known than his own self-imposed version (and consistant with Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Conventions), and secondly that what he is changing it to does not even make grammatical sense - it would be Cathedral of [City]. His edit summaries justify these changes with "usual English form of name consistent with comparable articles". The only reason that they are now "consistant" is that he has changed every one of them! Basically I'm looking for some consensus on this because it's going to take a lot of work to change every one back. Thanks Schcambo 17:35, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

You seem to be accusing me of some sort of vandalism. Yes, I have translated all of them to their clearest and most commonly used English language equivalents. I have also written a great many more, with comparable titles, to fill the numerous gaps. I see no mention of this issue on the Conventions page you refer to, and it would have been politer and more effective - in fact, more grown-up - to ask me directly about this before opening a general debate, especially phrased in the pointlessly and offensively aggressive way you have used.

In terms of an English language user, (e.g.) Lescar Cathedral is the obvious thing to call the cathedral in Lescar, not Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption de Lescar or indeed Cathedral of Lescar. We customarily refer to (e.g.) Salisbury Cathedral, Westminster Cathedral, and indeed Chartres Cathedral, Amiens Cathedral etc - this is the usual short way to refer a cathedral in English, and scarcely "self-imposed" by me. I simply don't understand what this user means by "grammatical sense"- what is ungrammatical about "Lyon Cathedral"? And how - to an Anglophone - can (e.g.) Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lyon be "much better known" than Lyon Cathedral? (As Schcambo kindly demonstrates above by getting it wrong...)

The great majority of the French cathedral articles when I started this exercise were stubs taken directly off the List of cathedrals in France, which was itself then just a copy and paste of the list from the French language Wikipedia (I have translated it since and I think it is now far more useful). Obviously things with French names should keep those in English but things which translate naturally to an English language equivalent - as in this case, cathedrals - should do so.

So as far as I am concerned this is a non-issue and User:Schcambo's comments make little sense. But the question of how to deal with titles of articles on non-English subjects is a topical one at present, and I will be interested to see what other people have to say. And in the case of all the examples you have given above, the English name is not known at all. What is "better known" to an English speaker - "Chartres Cathedral" or "Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres"? Your point is time-wasting: I renamed the present Nantes Cathedral, but not from "Cathedral of Nantes": it previously had the cumbersome title "Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, Nantes", which can scarcely be anyone's "better-known" preference. Having renamed the article, I also updated the four references to "Cathedral of Nantes" within it so that they read the same as the title (they are also BTW slightly shorter as "Nantes Cathedral") - this is called "consistency", of which I happen to be fond, and which, until you popped into my world a few minutes ago, I had thought to be a good thing on an encyclopedia.

I am of course continuing to assume your good faith but your arguments are starting to get silly, and I am starting to get the feeling that what you are really interested in is an argument for its own sake. We have said more than enough for our respective positions to be clear to third parties, and I suggest we now wait for other people to comment.HeartofaDog 20:31, 8 September 2007 (UTC)

(1) St Paul's and St. Patrick's are named the way they are because both London and Dublin have more than one operating cathedral - Westminster Cathedral and Southwark Cathedral, for example: please note the form of the name - and there is thus a need to distinguish. For this reason I have not renamed Notre-Dame in Paris, for example, and have distinguished the other cathedrals there, such as St. Louis' Cathedral, although as most are of different denominations - Ukrainian Catholic etc - I generally used those as more informative distinguishers than the dedications.

(2) Names such as 'Salisbury Cathedral' are mostly being used only when the the dedicatee is unknown or of little interest.

This is a completely ludicrous thing to say, and it makes it clear that you are arguing for the sake of it, without any grasp of or interest in the subject. It is simply untrue to say that (eg) the dedication of Salisbury Cathedral - to the Blessed Virgin Mary - "is unknown" and it is absurd on your part to say that it "is of little interest". Why is Salisbury any less interesting than Vannes or Nantes? The article is entitled "Salisbury Cathedral" because that is how it is "most well-known".

(3) I note the List of cathedrals in the United States. Now you please note (e.g.) List of cathedrals in the United Kingdom - Winchester Cathedral, Guildford Cathedral, Exeter Cathedral, etc etc etc. All of these have known dedications, of equal interest to those of any other cathedral. It is very glib of you to presume that a cathedral's "real name" is whatever you happen to think it should be. They can be equally validly referred to in a number of different ways, depending on context. My view, as you have made me repeat several times, is that unless there is a good and specific reason for a longer name - as there generally is, for example, in large cities with more than one cathedral - the most useful form of name is the one by which they are most commonly referred to in English, which is the short form "X Cathedral".

(4) To keep this in some sort of context, the edits of mine to which you take exception were for the most part translating foreign language names which are rarely if ever used in the English speaking world. There is simply no need to refer to a French cathedral in French - we have the word "cathedral", which is an exact equivalent. I cannot think of a single instance where I have changed the Eng lang form "St. A's Cathedral, X" to X Cathedral", except for the two cathedrals in Carcassonne, where in the end I decided it was more accurate to distinguish between them on the basis of current use as the cathedral and the basilica.

(5) Before you make any more ill-thought-out comments please READ the above and try and think it through. This is taking a great deal of my time, and after your unbelievable remark about Salisbury Cathedral I am finding it increasingly difficult to believe that you are interested in a serious discussion of the issue. (2) Maybe you should, you know, read the article? You obviously haven't noticed that this dedication isn't even mentioned in the lead paragraph! I mean, if something is that relevant then it should be there!

(3) You just don't seem to be able to understand this - the standard in England is to say X Cathedral - while the standard in other English speaking countries like Ireland, the US, Australia, or any other on this list: List of cathedrals, is to say Cathedral of St. A. In addition to all that, the standard in France itself is also to say Cathedral of St. A (please see fr:Cathédrales françaises.)

Well I'm sorry, but a) I'm going by the cathedrals' real, official names and b) I'm going by what the French themselves call them, not the English. And so the only one creating names is yourself.

Second, I am fully in favour of using English words in the titles (i.e. Cathedral of Saint X) but I completely against altering names in order to remove what they are rightfully and normally called.

• I wholeheartedly support the changes - the previous ones were a ridiculous blot on the landscape. How anyone can claim that the old titles were better known is beyond me. Proposed merger

As many of you may know, Wikipedia:WikiProject French départements is currently inactive. I was wondering what your project might think of taking on that project as a named subproject, maybe changing the name in the process, so that it deals more specifically with France's overseas territories and departments. Those areas seem substantial enough to me to benefit from some focused attention. The areas in particular I am thinking it could focus upon would be French Polynesia, Guadeloupe, Martinique, French Guiana, Saint Martin, Saint-Barthélemy, New Caledonia, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, and Réunion, and maybe Clipperton Island and the French Southern and Antarctic Lands as well. Request for help from French speaking editors

Bonjour ou Bon Soir. I apologize for jumping into a discussion page on France. We have a problem on an English Wikipedia article, Jean-Paul Ney, with two editors, one who may be Ney himself. Editors are using have highly inappropriate language, threats,and are citing personal web-sites and blogs many of which are in French. I haven't translated for awhile so I am not a good candidate to see if these sites are ok, that is to translate them, are what they editors citing them says they are and so on. The article could really use a neutral editor over there to take a look and maybe check some of these sites. I suppose this topic could be part of Wikipedia France. Thanks for your consideration. Lost in France

Hi everyone As a relative newbie to Wikipedia, I hope I’ve been doing things in the correct way I have had some time spare to create entries needed as shown on ProjectFrance. During the last fortnight, I have created the following pages on the English Wikipedia from stubs of ‘Cantons of France’. Wailly-Beaucamp Beaulieu-lès-Loches Wamin Wambercourt Fruges Fressin Chérisy In all but one case (Chérisy), I have taken the French Wiki pages and cut & pasted ( translating as I go). These are all places I know quite well, hence my attempting them in the first place. If anyone has time, especially a native French speaker, to compare translation and content, I would be grateful. It is, as far as I know a nationalist attempt to state that Catalonia is split into Spain and France, I suppose because of the Roussillon. This way of categorizing is found by some Catalan nationalists as an alternative to just delete any allusion to Spain. The problem is that almost all the contents in this categories are about Catalonia, the Spanish autonomous community, and I find the categories confusing as they are by now. Which denomination would you find best to describe the French territories that nationalists claim as Catalonia, in order to categorize their images properly?

Is the new articles page inactive? It looks like there is very little activity there recently. I made a semi-decent stub for the journalist Jean-François Kahn, but it probably needs somebody other than me to give it a bit of TLC. I intend to do something similar but even briefer for the cultural website evene.fr. Both have substantial articles on the French Wikipedia, if someone wanted to pick them up and run with them that would be great. Hallo, i write from Italy and i've got a question: I've found lot of "navigators" for almost all municipalities in Europe, excepted for France. It sounds like me very strange... Why this ? I would start doing some templates (but, of course, i can't do all) and then export to en. and fr. wiki (than they could be copied others interested...). Why not have a banner/ad for this project? I think it could be a good idea that would cause no halm and a lot of projects already have one ^{(they just reached 100 ads)}. Even WikiProject Antarctica Highways has one. What do you imagine for the catch phrase and the design? Centennial celebration of the French Revolution

I've come across a string of articles that refer to the centennial celebration of the French Revolution (without including a redlink like that!) but there doesn't seem to be a central article to bring the various strands together. A couple of examples:

• Exposition Universelle (1889) and associated construction of the Eiffel Tower
• Panthéon (Paris) notes that Lazare Carnot, Pierre Galetto, François Séverin Marceau-Desgraviers and Théophile Corret de la Tour d'Auvergne were reinterred there as part of the centennial celebrations. Presumably this was quite distinct from the Expo itself.

I imagine there was a great deal of pomp and ceremonial - surely more than the typical Bastille Day. I've seen writers refer to the "success" of the centennial celebration (e.g. "the centennial and bicentennial celebrations of 1789 are only the most obvious signs that, to date, the Revolution has won out" [8]). I've also seen claims that in a context of political tension, with conflict between extreme nationalists (many of whom who saw the Revolutionary tradition as un-French) and left-wing syndicalists, the French government was involved in a propaganda campaign to emphasise the "Frenchness" of Republican ideals and the official centennial celebrations formed part of this effort (e.g. [9]).

This certainly seems a very significant event, at least on a par with the Victorian Jubilee celebrations (indeed, it seems to have left a more substantial legacy), and there's enough scope here (the celebrations themselves, the politics behind them, their legacy) for a potentially quite meaty article, certainly not one condemned to perpetual stubdom. Despite that, I've not found an English-language source specifically devoted to the centennial celebrations, just mentions in passing (there's much more on the web about the bicentennial celebrations, but it's hard to believe that in 100 years time they will be considered to have left as large a legacy as the centennial ones). I'm certain this is because the Expo draws attention away from the wider celebrations and their context: surely the Expo was just an aspect of the celebrations, rather than the centennial celebrations being part of the Expo? So maybe this could do with an article of its own. But maybe not, if it was effectively subsumed by the Expo. Since I could only contribute a pretty dire stub on the subject, and wouldn't really know where to look for better sources, I'm just posting here to see what better-informed people think about it. I think it would be a great idea to start an article on the subject. I think that the Expo could be considered as part of the celebrations since the Celebrations would of happened with or without the Expo and that they chose to have an Expo that year because it was the 100^th anniversary. Unfortunately the sources I've found so far tend to mention the celebrations only in passing, generally as context to their main point. So I'd be synthesising from scraps, which is rarely the best way to produce an article! Probably I ought to try to find paper references - I don't have much on late nineteenth century France so I'll try raiding a library. I'll also have a look on the web for French language sources which are likely more numerous. I wonder if there are digitized newspaper archives dating back that far, and who would have access to them?TheGrappler 23:28, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Multiple place-names within train station names

The correct French usage per RATP website appears to be to use a hyphen without any spaces: Châtelet-Les Halles, Houilles-Carrières-sur-Seine, Le Vésinet-Centre, Cergy-Saint-Christophe, Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy. (See http://www.ratp.fr/ ). However, this image of an actual RER platform shows "Marne-la-Vallée – Chessy", using "space-en-dash-space" instead of just a "hyphen". So it can go both ways.

Wikipedia articles usually use "space-hyphen-space" or "space-dash-space": Châtelet – Les Halles (Paris RER), Houilles – Carrières-sur-Seine (SNCF), Le Vésinet – Centre (Paris RER), Gare de Cergy - Saint-Christophe, Gare de Marne-la-Vallée - Chessy.

Also, we are not clear whether to use "(Paris Métro)", "(Paris RER)", "(SNCF)", etc. instead of "Gare de". Can you weigh in on the discussion at Talk:Châtelet – Les Halles (Paris RER)#Requested move?

• Depends what's required - I see that many départments have half their communes listed in red (i.e. they have no entry) - Does this mean creating (pesumably from fr:wiki) an entry for each - or is there an automated method that can create a stub? Merge would be a good idea. In terms of the work, if you don't want to spend a lot of time translating a page, you can limit yourself to cut-and-pasting the info box from the French wiki, and then using Template:French commune, replacing "{{tableau comm|" by "{{French commune|". You will also need to add "|date-dens=" anywhere in the table, to anglicize the figures, and to add the right cats and fr: tag. - NYArtsnWords (talk) 20:25, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Were they Kings of France?

At the articles Louise, Duke of Augouleme and his nephew Charles, comte de Chambord, the content has them described as Kings of France (including their reigns). Louis, before he also signed an abdication, he was Louis XIX, but for only 20 minutes in 1830, which is why he’s never listed in ‘true’ lists of kings of France. According to a chronicler of the time, he asked ‘Let me reign for an hour”. His father (Charles X), who had just abdicated, said “You ? – certainly not !” Henri, comte de Chambord, again, was theoretically king of France, after his cousin, Louis, above. But in those days of Monarchism v Republicanism, the choice wasn’t just his. People and Parliament decided his fate. His intransigence regarding the tricolour led to his downfall. Before Parliament had decided to offer the throne to Louis-Philipe, Henri was in effect, ‘Henry V’ of France, for 7 days. Some English analogies: The story of the two young princes in the Tower (of London), imprisoned by their uncle, Richard III. Had the eldest (Edward V) been killed first, then the younger brother, also called Richard, would have been king, in theory, until he was then killed. He’s never officially listed as a king, of course. There’s little evidence of their murders, either, but as they were never seen again, one can only assume… Lady Jane Grey was pronounced Queen of England by her cousin Edward VI on his deathbed, but ‘reigned' for only 9 or 13 days, before being imprisoned and executed. Was she a true ‘Queen’ of England? James Francis Edward Stuart and his son, Charles Edward Stuart had claims to be the true kings of England, as James III and Charles III. Again, depending on your viewpoint, the claims could be valid. But as with France, it was Parliament (the ‘people’) that decided on the Protestant line. I’m happy with the approach of both articles. The French Wiki versions deals with the facts in the same vein and as with en:wiki, the two men aren’t in the formal lists of kings of France from 1804 - 1870. Canton naming convention

I'm trying to devise a plan for creating articles on all the cantons. One matter I need to sort out first is the names of cantons that contain numbers. My searching on INSEE has produced 380 such cantons. Most are of the form "Épernay 1er Canton" which I propose will become "Épernay 1st Canton", similarly 2e -> 2nd, 3e -> 3rd etc. However, there are a number of unusual cases listed below, for which I have listed possible options.

Yes, my problem with the French wiki list is that there seems to be no standard rule being followed. I want the English article name to reflect as closely as possible the official name used by INSEE. The Placing of the word "canton" seems to differ. It think that they should go under the form Canton of La Boug 5 and forget about the North/South/etc. bit since it simply describes the canton and isn't a part of it's disambiguation. ChrisDHDR 10:14, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

You might also be interested in the way the Italy Project do it, they have a subst that allows you to just copy and paste in the it.wiki infobox and it automagically converts itself into the en.wiki equivalent. I've put in a request to make it a wee bit more intelligent about its translations, and for a similar subst for the it.wiki frazione infobox - if you have a look over there, you'll have links to the relevant Italian templates. PS I've also got a proposal for a bot that might help automate the assessment of some of those Unassessed articles which you guys might be interested in... I agree with Zigzig20s. Maybe in other countries there is no such thing as an "official marriage" but in France there is and since she was born out of wedlock she is therefore "illegitimate" whether the term be pejorative or not (Note: Wiktionary and Wikipedia make not reference to the term being pejorative). It is hard to understand how the "illegitimacy" of someone's birth, even if there were notable events related to that (her father's secret second life and his actions, as president of France, to divert state security apparatus to cover it up), is relevant to the university at which that person, as an adult, later teaches. These events took place long before Mme Pingeot's association with the University of Provence, where apparently she still holds an appointment as a graduate teaching fellow while she completes her dissertation. There is no evidence that the university has either affected or been affected by these events. On the other hand, there are many distinguished faculty at the university, who are known for their contributions to scholarship and learning. To cite Mme Pingeot as the only faculty member worthy of note at the university, and essentially because of the circumstances surrounding her birth, is to lose for Wikipedia a sense of proportion, relevance, and appropriateness. I'm not sure why the initial deletion was reversed when there was no consensus for reversing it. For the contributors to this thread to weigh in on the appropriateness of the deletion, they would need to see the explanation for the deletion, which I provided to you on your talk page when you asked me about it but which you did not reference here. Even in the absence of that context, there's been one user who felt that it should be restored but without the use of the word "illegitimate" and one user who felt that the word "illegitimate" was fine, so it's hard to say that there's really a consensus for restoring it in its original form. For me, Saint Quentin Cambrésis is the name of a train station near Saint Quentin see here for exemple but i don't think that will help you. The cambrésis was the name of an old provinces of France. And, a priori, Saint Quentin is in the cambresis. Yves-Laurent (talk) 07:53, 19 February 2008 (UTC)

• I've never heard of the cloth, outside of this article and Wiktionary. None of the foreign language articles on Chambray mention it, including, most significantly, the French Wikipedia at fr:Chambray. Similarly, from Wiktionary the other language links do not include French. My paper encyclopaedias do not mention it. That's not to say it doesn't exist of course, but a bit of research needs to be done by a textiles expert. I will expand the present article from the French version later today. Yves-Laurent is almost certainly correct. One of the foreign language Wiktionaries mentioned 'batiste' (but my knowledge of whichever language was no help there). OK. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, Chambray is "A kind of gingham with a linen finish." Etymology is given as "irreg. f. Cambray (see CAMBRIC). The OED defines cambric as "A kind of fine white linen, originally made at Cambray in Flanders". So that clinches it - there is no connection with the town Chambray. Manual of Style

While we at WP:France have elaborated some spelling/naming conventions (Wikipedia:WikiProject France/Conventions), I wonder if it would not be more helpful for the entire EN Wiki to create a French-related Manual of Style page (like Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Arabic), Wikipedia:Manual of Style (Ireland-related articles), etc.) and move our conventions there. There's plenty to put in such a page. The conventions doesn't go far enough, imo. I had a problem with (what the English call ethel, the œ ligature, and couldn't find info. anywhere. As I can't type it easily, I've replaced all encounters with it by 'oe' (see Jacques Coeur, for example). Same applies with c-cidilla, the circonflex, e-grave, the double-dot (Umlaut in German), in words like Noel, Citroen etc etc. If one can't type it, how does one search for it ? 'ë' is Alt+0235, it's just a question of learning the Alt+ codes to get the desired accents etc. I'd say that if a word has a letter with an accent in French, then it should always be used in English articles as it is spelled in French. One can always italicise words borrowed from French to show that they are not English words - e.g. Viaduc, which should be easily recognised as meaning viaduct but also recognised as being a French word (Translations can be given in brackets if necessary). British or American forms

WPFrance doesn't have a pref, but the Wikipedia Manual of Style gives some guidelines: Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#National_varieties_of_English : "The English Wikipedia has no general preference for a major national variety of the language... An article on a topic that has strong ties to a particular English-speaking nation uses the appropriate variety of English for that nation." Check out that page for more info. Personally I'd let proximity decide - so I'd expect articles about Mexico or Brazil to be in US English and articles about France to be in British English. You could certainly argue that Aquitaine, Brittany and the Pas de Calais have particularly "strong ties" to England in particular, and the invasion by Ryanair means that Britons heavily outnumber North Americans when it comes to numbers living or holidaying in France. Conversely in somewhere like Cancun you'll find many more North Americans (but still a surprising number of Brits), and you'd expect that article to be in US English. Just my view, anyhow. Healthcare in France

Hi. I am not sure of the best place to post this request - please move it if this is not the correct location. There are a number of articles on the healthcare systems in various countries (Healthcare in the United States, Healthcare in the United Kingdom, Healthcare in Sweden, Healthcare in Canada, Health care in China and so on). There is no Healthcare in France article - this is just a redirect to Minister of Health (France), which is not the same topic. I have started an article at User:Neil/Healthcare in France, and intend to work on this article for a few weeks until it is ready to move into article space. The French-language article (fr:Système de santé français) is just a very short stub, so little help there. Any assistance (see also the talk page) would be welcome. Merci beaucoup. Assessment bot

Hi guys. I notice that you have one or two unassessed articles. :-))) I've just had User:FlagBot approved, which I wrote for the Italy Project. It works in two parts - first it reads in all the articles in a Project, and analyses them for how many headings, images, references etc they have. Then based on that it has a go at assessing them for Stub or Start-ness - it uses fairly tight criteria so the false positive rate is considerably less than 1%, but it leaves around 20% unassessed, either in the grey area between Stub and Start, or the one where something's heading towards a B. Then, if it can find a commune infobox with a population in it, it will try to assign an importance based on population - for the Italy Project it uses <15000 for Low, 25000<Mid<75000, High >125000. I note 100k is High here by definition, and I'd obviously have a trial run with the already assessed articles just to tweak the parameters for this Project. Also it obviously doesn't really cope well with "unnaturally" important villages and small towns, but in practice that doesn't seem to have been much of a problem for the Italy Project, and people can always review the list of assessed articles and promote the ones that deserve it - I eyeball the list myself before running it.
If nothing else it makes manual assessment a whole lot more interesting because it gets the no-brainer village stubs out of the way, :-)) but on the assumption that a big chunk of your Unassesseds are transwikied commune articles, FlagBot could make a serious dent in the amount to be assessed. Think about it anyhow - it won't be for a few weeks as I've got my hands full with the Italy Project right now (and haven't actually run FlagBot yet on the 1500-odd articles that are waiting for it), but I thought if I flagged it up now, then people might want to have a bit of a purge on adding infoboxes to any communes that haven't got them yet - I know I've seen a few around the place. And of course it assumes that people are interested in me running Flagbot on France? FlagSteward (talk) 18:20, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

There's other criteria for city importance than simple population numbers - Take Saint-Tropez for example, whose wee population (on a France-wide comparison standard) is by far outweighed by its fame as a summer resort. Rather, I think it would be a good idea to base article importance on the number of visits to the article itself - but I'm not sure that this sort of thing is easy to register on wikipedia... Jimmy? It's a reasonable concern, but in practice it wasn't much of an issue in the Italy Project, there were something like 12 St Tropez-style underestimates out of 2300 articles. I can accept that there's maybe more places like that in France than Italy that are particularly notable to anglophone readers, but don't forget that I will be eyeballing the assessments manually before setting the bot in action. And anyone else is free to do the same - even if it takes an hour to scan 10,000 articles and tweak the assessments of the likes of St Tropez, it would take 100+ hours (and the loss of your will to live :-) )to assess 10,000 articles manually, so for the same effort you're 9900 assessments ahead of the game. :-)) I accept that there's an element of "trust me" here, but once I've done the Italy articles you can mebbe be reassured. Several articles in WP:FR are made up of lists, so they might be long, with several headings but still be a stub! So here something more needs to be done. Also number of links to the article could also be some hint to its importance, not sure how you can calculate that though. I think we may as well give it a try, it could only do good. Of course, like everything, it's not perfect and will get some wrong - yet that is grossly outweighed by all the work it will do. Picking up on a few points. Lists can't be Stubs - or Starts or B's or As or GAs or FAs for that matter, they should be assessed as either List or FL. The exact parameters would be fiddled with on a per-Project basis, just to try and get the best match with the already assessed articles. For instance, the Italy Project comuni articles tend to have demographic timelines which add 2kb to the article but don't affect stubbiness much, so I subtracted those, whereas I note that the fr.wiki guys tend to be quite free at adding empty sections, so yes I'd allow for that. Whatever is the best empirical match for the existing data - although bear in mind that the Start criteria allow for a Start with just one "gathered material" ie an image, certainly an article with 2 inline refs and an image would be close to a Start by most standards. I'll let the data decide though, no preconceptions. On the page hits thing, there is a limited service at http://stats.grok.se/en/200801/Nicolas%20Sarkozy - but it's not really intended for bulk use. Over on the Wine Project we've toyed with using it to at least decide priorities for things like Wine Improvement Drives, just on the really Top priority articles. It would be interesting to do a sweep of the Lows to find the unexpectedly popular ones, but I'm not sure that server is up to it yet. And it suffers from the "St Tropez" problem, only worse - by that metric Carla Bruni (296k hits in January) is more than twice as important as Nicolas Sarkozy (127k)!!! I think there's definitely scope to do something there in the future, to modify priorities, but I don't think it's ready for assessments with no human intervention. Names of country articles (Ireland)

This post does not directly concern French topics but might benefit from the fresh perspectives of editors of French articles getting involved.

I have proposed that the articles “foreign relations of the Republic of Ireland; civil service of the Republic of Ireland and public service of the Republic of Ireland" be renamed in each case by deleting the words “the Republic of”.

The main article concerning the Irish state is called Republic of Ireland because the island of Ireland already occupies the Ireland page. I do not propose to move this. However, the correct name of the Irish state is simply "Ireland". "Republic of Ireland" is not correct. This is discussed at length at an article I contributed to, Names of the Irish state. If you are sufficiently interested, you may wish to read the Names of the Irish state article and then contribute your opinions, whatever they may be here. Irish contributors are always a small minority on WP and even the most rational edits often get 'voted down' for essentially political reasons. I think I've put forward pretty convincing reasons for the three moves (and only three moves - try not to be distracted by the smokescreens of those opposed to the moves). I appreciate few French people are even likely to read this post so we will all still bring our English-speaking perspectives to the debate. However, I am desperate for the level of debate concerning this matter to improve (much of the discussion has consisted of stale rantings over Irish history and politics). An anon edited this article to say that there was no current King of Alo. This presumably means that Soane Patita Maituku has died, but I can find no coverage of this. Bordeaux

Hello, I've noticed by 'surfing' around a bit recently that many of the English pages related to Bordeaux are incomplete (stubs), or just missing altogether. Today, I translated the French page on the Tramway line A, but that's just a first step considering that the French wikipedia has an extensive coverage of Bordeaux transit, with pages for every tramway stop. Since this currency is not in circulation, poses no possible interest for counter fitting, is no longer legal tender^[14], and that the government that issued it has long since disappeared, I don't think there should be any problem. Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. Rendundant templates

Hello.

I think the template on the left (Governments of France) is unneeded. It is just a subset of the one on the right, so I can't see any reason why it would be used instead. May I propose they be merged?

Also, since almost everyone of those entries is going to have a dominant Template:Infobox Former Country (which is a long, right aligned column as well) in the top right, could I recommend converting the "History of France" template into a Template:Navbox, thus allowing it to be stacked with other templates at the bottom of the page? Green Maps of France with French cities

There is something wrong with the way these maps work out in the info box. The map that should show the location of Montpellier, Perpignan, ... only shows a small Northern part of the graphic (Southern England and a bit of Northern France). This problem has been known for quite a while at {{French commune}} (since oct. 2007!). If you know a possible solution, don't hesitate to try it out. Otherwise, I don't know what to say. ChrisDHDR 19:20, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

You may replace the "lat_long" and "map" parameters by "latitude" and "longitude" (decimal), a map is provided by the infobox; see Montpellier now. — M-le-mot-dit (T) 15:34, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

That's one solution, I guess - remove the offending image. I tried all sorts of options to get this to work but had to admit defeat ! Perpignan has the same problem with its map. Infobox:French commune

Something odd seems to have occurred with the map on the infobox - the coordinates (lat & long) appear lower than they should. I'm working on communes in the Pas-de-Calais, but the red dot is appearing approx 4mm lower on the map, in the Somme department, in the Picardie region. This is happening before I've done any editing at all - see Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise. Anyone any thoughts on this ? Dickie (talk) 12:21, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Answered my own question - User Ventura has changed the map ! (in the protected Template:Location map France). Toulon is 30 miles out to sea ! I hope to get this change reverted.

Would anyone be interested in finding more references for these two writers? The pages on the French Wikipedia are not referenced; it is not easy finding any, tbh. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

• The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
• The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
• A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Bordeaux Tramway

I've been making articles for the stations on the Bordeaux tramway and wanted to know if anyone is interested in helping out. I've done Template:Tramway de Bordeaux B and part of Template:Tramway de Bordeaux C but need to do most of Template:Tramway de Bordeaux A. The translations are pretty simple and regular across most pages so not much French is needed. I tend to do it by editing the French page to add its page number as an EN interwiki and then copying and translating. I've been leaving the article names exactly the same since the "Tramway de Bordeaux" dab phrase is the same we use for the article and it keeps linking the same. gren グレン 04:37, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

There is currently a proposal for a bot that would notify WikiProjects when their articles have entered certain workflows, e.g. when they are nominated for deletion or for Good article reassessment.

L'Occitane en Provence

The article has undergone drastic changes due to copyviolation or advertising-like descriptions on the subject. Although it has been expanded by a couple of editors, I think it deserves to get more attention since it is notable (not much like Body Shop though), and someone requests it to have IPA. Pont-de-l'Arche

This article is a copyvio of an English translation on a French webpage here of an original article by a French local historian. The translation is also rudimentary- it reads like a machine translation. I accessed this article because of the connection between Pont de l'Arche and the Battle of Bosworth Field (Henry's French pikemen came from a disbanded camp there). It seems a shame for the article to be in this shape, but a bit daunting for a non-specialist like me to do anything to correct the situation. Ning-ning (talk) 22:16, 30 July 2008 (UTC)

The March 5th 2007 anonymous contribution was probably done with the best intentions, by a non-native English speaker. The French wikipedia fr:Pont-de-l'Arche version developing from 21 Sept 2005 onwards seems to have formed the basis for the French version of the French webpage, IMO.

Whichever was first, the English article is poor and in need of attention, but I'm still busy concentrating on the Pas-de-Calais communes. Dickie (talk) 08:50, 31 July 2008 (UTC)

Right, I usually just look it up in the dictionary and then copy the IPA pronunciation into the article using the {{IPA}} template. However, this is a proper noun. Organization?

Hi, I was thinking that we might be able to reorganize ourselves a bit as a project. For example, posts to our internal peer review are often left dangling (I just archived a bunch). This is in contrast, to Wikiproject Chicago which has instituted an internal forum where all FACs/Peer Reviews/GANs, etc that relate to the project are listed. This seems like a convenient way to generate colloborative work.

I was wondering if anyone would be onboard to consider a similar process for us?

WP:Chicago also organizes a colloboration of the week. Would anyone be interested in doing something similar, but along the lines of a bi-weekly article drive?

Review Department

So, as I mentioned above, I was looking at WP:CHICAGO and became impressed with their Review Department which provides a convenient collection of current articles undergoing either internal peer-reviews or external GAN, FAC, etc. This allows their project members to be aware of current articles, with the ultimate goal of producing more featured content relating to Chicago.
