Which cricketer has a batting average of more than 50 and bowling average more than 100 in Tests? Wizvikz (talk) 02:07, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I get points for this...
Sunil Gavaskar 54.20 and 206
Jack Hobbs 56.94 and 165
Charlie Davis 54.20 and 165
Herb McGirr 51 and 115 Ovshake (talk) 03:00, 5 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What connects Eoin Morgan, Mike Hussey, Matthew Hayden, Brian Lara, David Gower, Shiv Chanderpaul, Clive Lloyd, Justin Langer & Curtley Ambrose? This is by no means a complete set.Abeer.ag (talk) 07:57, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They are 9 of the 167 ODI players who bat left handed but bowl right arm.The-Pope (talk) 13:46, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
... and has opened either batting or bowling in an ODI? Well, Morgan possibly hasn't, and there's no Ganguly on the list, but then, the list is incomplete... Ovshake (talk) 13:55, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, they're the only Christians to have opened either batting or bowling in an ODI and has taken at least one ODI wicket. Ovshake (talk) 13:56, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q764 edit

What ODI record does Michael Bevan hold, followed by Inzamam-ul-Haq, Hashan Tillakaratne. Jonty Rhodes & Damien Martyn. In Twenty20 cricket the record is held by Michael Hussey with Brad Hodge being the only other guy to have done this more than once, but in Tests, only ten guys have ever done it, but none twice.

Anything to do with not batting in consecutive victories by a side? Hodge has batted in only one of the matches Australia won while he played. Ovshake (talk) 16:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cricket's best passengers? The most of number of wins when not batting, not bowling and not taking a catch or stumping. --Travis Basevi (talk) 16:47, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It indeed seems so. However, for test cricket, eleven instances with Bill Johnston doing it twice, while the question mentions no one doing this twice - 1 and 2. Ovshake (talk) 17:04, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I saw that, and it was the last two Tests in his career no less - obviously got dumped for not pulling his weight! Anyway, Hussey also isn't the outright leader for T20Is, as both Hodge and him have only done the feat twice, but everything else seemed uncannily correct so I thought I'd have a punt. Maybe there's some small clause I'm missing. --Travis Basevi (talk) 17:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I expected to have to at least given a clue! Travis is close enough...it is the "dun nuthin" club. Most completed games (ie excluding draws/no result games, only wins, losses & ties) in which a player didn't bat (but wasn't declared "absent"), bowl, catch or wicket-keep. I first noticed it when Hussey did nothing in about 3 or 4 games in a row (maybe a catch or two), but the updated statsguru made it possible to collate for Tests (Batty being the last one to do it, and Johnson's absence in one innnings disqualifies one of his matches), over 750 times in ODIs and Twenty20. For Tests, if you include draws, but still exclude "absent", then only Stuart Carlisle has been "DNB" in two innings, with no catches/bowling. In the same match Alistair Campbell didn't bat or bowl but took some catches - matching Lionel Tennyson's lack of effort 79 years earlier! The-Pope (talk) 23:35, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q765 edit

In what parallel universe would have Gavaskar not been the leading Test run-scorer in this list on 27 Nov 1984, Hadlee not been the leading wicket-taker on 20 Jun 1990 and Boucher not been the leading keeper at the start of this year? (And before people get carried away with the vagaries of science-fiction, it is a single simple reason that unites them all!) --Travis Basevi (talk) 02:38, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Had the unofficial World XI tests counted as official ones? Ovshake (talk) 03:18, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Obvious guess no. 2: had the Packer tests counted as official ones? Ovshake (talk) 03:19, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Combining the two: had both the World XI tests and the Packer tests counted as official tests? Ovshake (talk) 03:20, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The scattergun approach succeeds! It's number 2. If you add the 16 WSC Supertests then Greg Chappell would have finished his career at the top of the pile with 8525 runs, Lillee would have had 422 wickets and Marsh would have had 407 dismissals (and a record which would have remarkably lasted for 24 years). The dates above are the day before the Test in which each record would have been broken... I don't think I've worked harder for an easier question. --Travis Basevi (talk) 12:52, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What connects Richie Robinson and Lee Germon? Ovshake (talk) 14:11, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Both were wicket keepers that were selected solely as batsmen (in Germon's case he was selected as captain too). They both did reasonably poorly, and were consigned back to domestic cricket? --KingStrato (talk) 15:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Both played in teams where a specialist keeper played as a batsman(Richie Robinson himself, and Adam Parore in case of Lee Germon)Abeer.ag (talk) 16:03, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I believe I should've defined myself more clearly - what unique thing connects the two of them? The ones you mention have happened too many times to list. Ovshake (talk) 16:23, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Lee Germon scored a fifty in this match where there were 2 centuries and one another fifty. An uncanny similarity for Richie Robinson who also scored a fifty in this match where there were again 2 centuries and one another fifty.Could be just a coincidence, but wondering if am on the right track for the answer Sumant81 (talk) 17:35, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, and had it been the case, the other two batsmen (who scored fifties) would also had qualified, isn't it? Ovshake (talk) 18:40, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hint # 1: It's an ODI feat. Ovshake (talk) 18:40, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

They got there highest list A scores in ODI? or, They got there highest list A scores in ODI in which they were invloved in a century partnership with a batsman who made a century and crossed their highest ODI score in that match?Abeer.ag (talk) 19:23, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Abeer, whatever you've tried to explain here is not the answer (I had to read it thrice to get what it means, and I'm still not sure). It's a lot simpler than that. Robinson has a very brief ODI career, a look through the scorecards might give the answer. Ovshake (talk) 19:26, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Four victims in a match including a stumping plus a score of 50+? BlackJack | talk page 19:57, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
And the dismissals were off three different bowlers. --KingStrato (talk) 20:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Combining the conditions, Germon doesn't qualify, though Wayne Phillips (including a stumping off Kepler Wessels), Brendon Kuruppu (four different bowlers), Adam Gilchrist (thrice, including once six victims off four bowlers, once five victims off four bowlers, once five victims off three bowlers) and Kumar Sangakkara do. In fact, of all players with a fifty and four victims, only Dhoni hasn't covered three bowlers, and he's the only one to have a hundred or multiple (3) stumpings.
And by the way, it's way, way simpler than all this. The four victims are relevant, though. Now search Germon. Ovshake (talk) 20:09, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Minus the batting trick, both had the personal best of four dismissals in an innings, made to three different right-arm bowlers, two of them pacers and the other a slow bowler.Wizvikz (talk) 22:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Assuming the three current players aren't finished with their career, they're both the only players to make 4 or more dismissals in their last ODI (or alternatively, they're the only players to make 4 or more dismissals including a stumping in their last ODI) [1] --Travis Basevi (talk) 23:54, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Perfect, they're the only ones with ≥4 dismissals in their last ODI barring those who're not around. The current lot has AB deVilliers (5), Gareth Hopkins (5) and Denesh Ramdin (4). Over to you. Ovshake (talk) 00:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What record is held by these matches in the Test and ODI versions of the game: Eng v Aus 4th Test in 2005 and the recent WI v Aus 5th ODI? --Travis Basevi (talk) 05:16, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wild Guess, Most Double Figures Scores in a match?? --Bharath (talk) 10:40, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope and nope, although the number of double figure scores is vaguely related. I should clarify that the record only concerns part of the match not the whole of the match. --Travis Basevi (talk) 11:51, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had noticed the ODI when it happened. I had first thought that this was the first time that five batsmen have scored ≥ 49, but then I found out that Pakistan had once registered five fifties vs Zimbabwe. The ODI isn't even the highest score for maximum runs without a hundred (South Africa had scored 391). Neither does the test match hold the similar record. Are they the instances where most players have crossed 25 in an innings? Ovshake (talk) 14:30, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It can't be; there were eight fifties by India vs England last year. Ovshake (talk) 14:30, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Anything to do with the no. 6 batsmen? They seem to be either the top-scorer or the second-highest scorer in all the six innings from the two matches. Ovshake (talk) 14:41, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The same player has had the best bowling and top score (Warne and Symonds), but surely that has happened close to a million times before...? Ovshake (talk) 15:15, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ovshake was on the right track. Let's just say this is similar to a relatively well known record(s) but with a more arbitrary number. --Travis Basevi (talk) 15:23, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it related to Sarwan and Ponting??Abeer.ag (talk) 15:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to be negative but no. --Travis Basevi (talk) 16:04, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, lowest highest score (does the phrase make any sense?) by a side with >350 in a test / >300 in an ODI / 4 fifties? Ovshake (talk) 17:00, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Has to be something that makes the test match qualify and this one not qualify (your match has 387 with a top score of 61 whereas this one has 386 with a top score of 53, both with three 50s). Lowest highest score where the team score is ≥ 387? The ODI record holds for ≥ 310 or so... (Sri Lanka had a 309 with Ranatunga topscoring with 59) Ovshake (talk) 17:14, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You're getting pretty darn warm. Try thinking where's no maximum/minimum for the team score. --Travis Basevi (talk) 21:10, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now I'm lost. So is the no. of 50s the criterion? Ovshake (talk) 22:03, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No. The matches in question have the highest innings scores where... --Travis Basevi (talk) 23:38, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
...Australia is involved and something else from the plethora of my criterion? Ovshake (talk) 23:43, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, the highest team scores where no one has crossed 61 (tests) and 66 (ODIs). Ovshake (talk) 23:49, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it me, or can you really not set highest score in an innings as a criterion in Statsguru? Ovshake (talk) 23:54, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That will do me. The highest team scores where no one passed 66. And all before I had to maximise my browser before I ran out of width. Back to you it goes. (And nope, that's one of the many permutations that can't be done in statsguru) --Travis Basevi (talk) 00:16, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What connects Bill Ponsford, Joe Solomon and Romesh Kaluwitharana? Ovshake (talk) 02:20, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Is it to do with Debut ? Ponsford Test debut Solomon 1st two f-c debut innings Kaluwitharana Test debut ?Wattmaster (talk) 08:35, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not quite, and several others have scored hundreds on their FC debut. Ovshake (talk) 11:47, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hint 1: It's something that they had achieved in consecutive tests; for Ponsford, it was in fact in consecutive innings. Ovshake (talk) 22:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm running out of questions possibly. Complete the following sequence: Greg Chappell, Martin Crowe, Mark Waugh, Grant Flower, _____ Ovshake (talk) 12:23, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scored a Test century when his brother was captaining the team? Can't think who the fifth might be, though. BlackJack | talk page 13:46, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The "when his brother" bit is correct. There are some wrong bits, though - test, century and captaining, and some more information. Ovshake (talk) 13:56, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How about David Hussey.? The pair of bros scoring a 50 in the same ODI.The list being the younger bros list Sumant81 (talk) 14:15, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scoring a hundred in the last, deciding match of a series/tournament against India? Ovshake (talk) 00:45, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No ,nothing related to that. Think of an (inning, ground) combo. There is something unique about the list of all (inning, ground) pairs for these players. Here is a hint : The inning of Phil Simmons that I am referring to is this matchSumant81 (talk) 02:29, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They top-scored in the only match played at certain venues? Ovshake (talk) 04:33, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They actually scored 100s in the only match played at certain venues I believe. You've given me Simmons, in that case possibly the blank is Kapil Dev at Turnbridge Wells, Samuels made his ton at Vijaywada; I'm trying to unearth the rest. Ovshake (talk) 04:39, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Flower at New Plymouth (obviously, I shouldn't have missed that one), Gayle at the Simba Union Ground, Nairobi and Ponting at Darwin. Ovshake (talk) 04:47, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good question, but the hint gave it away (assuming I'm correct). Ovshake (talk) 04:48, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Bingo..thats bang on target.,that was the answer! 100s in only match played at a particular venue.Kapil Dev (Turnbridge Wells) was the answer I was looking for,Stumbled onto the question when I was looking for Andy Flower's debut innings .This would give you the list Without a hint it would have been tough to crack :) :) Sumant81 (talk) 04:54, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q772 edit

A was a legbreak bowler, and could've been classified as an allrounder, at least at first-class level. A made his test debut alongside B. In that test their captain, C, another spinner, took most wickets for his side. A took four wickets in the match, and D, another spinner who shares his surname with B, took three more, and their team won. B went on to succeed C as the national captain, and A, C and D all became national selectors later on. Identify all four. Ovshake (talk) 05:09, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the original version I gave the number of wickets C took in the test; then I realised that Statsguru would narrow down the search since the person concerned is the captain. Sorry for that. Ovshake (talk) 05:18, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's this match. C is Allan Border and B is Mark Taylor. A is Trevor Hohns, D is Peter Taylor. BlackJack | talk page 05:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
11 minutes. :( Over to you. Ovshake (talk) 05:20, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I used CricketArchive records to get it by checking players with 11 wickets in a match. There were no England captains (Tony Lock did it three times, by the way) so I tried Australia next. Benaud took an 11 just before he became captain and then I spotted Border. BlackJack | talk page 05:27, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Imran (thrice), Gilligan, Nupen, Intikhab and Border are the only once to have done it, with Intikhab and Border being the only spinners. I suppose I shouldn't have given the # wickets. Ovshake (talk) 13:27, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q773 edit

Name the county captain who hit two successive balls from Wilfred Rhodes onto the roof of the Lord's pavilion. BlackJack | talk page 12:05, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Grace? Ovshake (talk) 12:50, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. BlackJack | talk page 17:23, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm wondering if the mention of the Lord's pavilion could be a subtle bit of misdirection. Could it have been the Surrey v Yorkshire match in August, 1914, plated at Lord's because the military had requisition The Oval? The Surrey captain in that match was Tom Hayward (an exceptional honour for a professional of the period), but hitting balls onto the roof of the pavilion doesn't sound like his style. Ah! Could it have been a Gentlemen v Players match? In which case suspicion would fall on Gilbert Jessop. JH (talk page) 20:49, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, it was not a Surrey game and it was not a GvP match. And neither Hayward nor Jessop. BlackJack | talk page 21:04, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So it looks like it must have been a Middlesex captain, and you weren't being as devious as I thought. :) Of the possible candidates, the most likely seems to be FT Mann. JH (talk page) 21:09, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if he's being really devious it could be the other Lord's, in Durban. Though I don't know why Rhodes would have been playing against a county captain there.
I'm still not leaping to the conclusion that it was a Middlesex match. Rhodes also played various other matches at Lord's, several vs MCC, also South vs North, Yorkshire vs the Rest, etc.
Stephen Turner (Talk) 21:27, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A. O. Jones was a big hitter. Johnlp (talk) 22:01, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Gregor MacGregor? Ovshake (talk) 22:27, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Surely not Plum Warner? Ovshake (talk) 22:32, 12 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was the county captain captaining in the same match? Are South African provinces also termed counties, or are they termed states or provinces? Ovshake (talk) 04:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, we're possibly assuming that when he says Lord's, he means a ground, and he doesn't mean anything that belongs to a Lord, for example, Rhodes' county captain for ages... Ovshake (talk) 04:13, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, a lot of answers there. The correct one is well up the list and I wasn't being devious because it was a Middlesex v Yorkshire match. It was Frank Mann in this match. According to Wisden: "The cream of the cricket was Mann's superb driving. Four times he hit Rhodes for sixes, the first two - from successive balls - landing on the roof of the Pavilion". So it's over to JH for the next one. BlackJack | talk page 06:43, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a verse from a poem about a cricketer. Can you tell me (1) who it's about (easy) and (2) who wrote it (not quite so easy)?

The Master: records prove the title good:
Yet figures fail you, for they cannot say
How many men whose names you never knew
Are proud to tell their sons they saw you play.

John Arlott. Found it here via Google on the first line. Some other good poems here too. BlackJack | talk page 09:02, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Lord's XI v Public Schools XI" sounds an innocuous enough fixture, but something other than rain or bad light stopped play. What happened? BlackJack | talk page 09:43, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A German V1 guided missile exploded near Lord's and the ensuing chaos haulted the play.Wizvikz (talk) 10:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. The match in question took place on 11 & 12 August 1944. The stoppage lasted "little more than a minute" according to Wisden after everyone heard and saw the missile approach. Players and spectators hit the deck and the doodlebug exploded about 200 yards from Lord's. Some pieces of soil did fall on the pitch. All yours, Wizvikz. Q776 edit

Can't think of anything tough right now. Javed Miandad once ran out a batsman while the latter went down to inspect the pitch with the ball still in play. Mushtaq Mohammad requested the umpire to revoke his decision in keping with the spirit of the game but was surprisingly denied. Tell me the name of the batsman, and also the signature performer of the Test. Wizvikz (talk) 02:19, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've vaguely heard of this, but can't remember who it was. Surinder Amarnath in the test where Sunil Gavaskar scored twin tons in Karachi? Ovshake (talk) 02:46, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Or was it one of Kim Hughes, Graham Yallop and Rodney Hogg in the test where Sarfraz Nawaz took his 9/86? Ovshake (talk) 02:48, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
- : Rodney Hogg was the batsman in this Test. Sarfraz Nawaz took 9/86 in the second innings, including a spell of 7/1, so I guess he's the signature preformer you are after. --Roisterer (talk) 02:55, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Another easy one. What non-statistical event happened for the first time in this match Sumant81 (talk) 15:47, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The youngest ever test player? Two black Zimbabwean players in the team for the first time? From the almanack [2]Abeer.ag (talk) 16:03, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can you define a non-statistical event? :-D Ovshake (talk) 16:13, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Zimbabwe's team had seven players who had brothers who played first-class cricket. Plus one with a cousin... But that's probably a statistic. Johnlp (talk) 20:49, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing that out, Johnlp. As I tried to look up who the seven men were, I found out that Everton Matambanadzo has a twin who has played first class cricket. That made my day. Ovshake (talk) 21:14, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, if you add Moin Khan and Saqlain Mushtaq, the no. of people with brothers in first-class cricket goes up higher. And I've heard somewhere that Salim Malik and Aamer Malik are brothers, though I've got no proof to back me up. Ovshake (talk) 23:35, 14 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Guess thats the tough part of framing an question that has many possible answers, but it has nothing to do with number of brothers etc. Abeer.ag was the closest to the answer I was looking for,and hence I am going to give it to him.It was the first time two black players opened the bowling for Zimbabwe but given that they were also the first two black players to play together, that is also correct. Sumant81 (talk) 01:49, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can anyone confirm whether Salim and Aamer Malik are brothers? Ovshake (talk) 01:23, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q779 edit

This player is a part of two sets. The first includes Mohammed Azharuddin, Kris Srikkanth, Stephen Fleming, Victor Richardson and him. The other includes Hashan Tillakaratne, Matthew Hayden, Greg Chappell, Stepehen Fleming again & him. Who am I talking about?

Is this about going wicketless / taking few wickets? Fleming always brings that statistic into mind, and I know that Azharuddin and Srikkanth haven't taken test wickets, and have just checked that Richardson hasn't bowled either (Srikkanth holds the record for bowling in most test innings without a wicket). However, Greg Chappell spoils the party... but then, it might be a fielding record as well. Ovshake (talk) 14:14, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, it's Yajurvindra Singh, most catches by a non-wicketkeeper in an innings (5) and in a match (7). Ovshake (talk) 14:19, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ovshake's got it. Do you mind if I ask you how you got the answer so quickly? I though I'd have to give out a hint.Abeer.ag (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I mentioned the path I'd used. First checked bowling, then fielding. BTW, you haven't signed your name anywhere, I'm just assuming you're Abeer.ag. Ovshake (talk) 17:11, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I put three tildes instead of four.Abeer.ag (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Q780 edit

Conplete the three sequences
A, Glenn McGrath, Allan Donald
B, Allan Donald, C
Allan Donald, D, E
A, B, C, D, E are all international cricketers. I wanted to leave everything other than Donald blank, but it'd have been too obscure, so I filled up one of the blanks with McGrath. Ovshake (talk) 17:19, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you made this into one sequence, it would be the start of the list, by date, of bowlers who have taken four or more wickets in an innings in a Test match at Centurion (Schultz, McGrath, Donald, Muralitharan, Donald, Walsh, Donald, Paul Adams, Zoysa). Just thought you'd like to know. Johnlp (talk) 22:32, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wish I could give it to you, it seems a better answer than the actual one. How on earth did you get this to fit...? I wanted to provide hints, but filling up any more blank might be a giveaway... Ovshake (talk) 00:52, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, if you browse through McGrath and Donald's Wikipedia/CricInfo profiles carefully you might solve it. Ovshake (talk) 13:43, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is it something to do with ICC Test Rankings at end of years 96-98 I notice the other cricketers in top 3 other than donald were Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollock ..but then I hope A-E are all distinct cricketers Sumant81 (talk) 15:32, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
They're distinct. But it's far, far easier than what you think. Ovshake (talk) 16:07, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Glenn McGrath's middle name is Donald - does that have anything to do with the answer? --Roberry (talk) 16:26, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're absolutely on the right track, now can you provide me with A through E? I feel D might pose some problem... Ovshake (talk) 16:33, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since Donald's middle name is Anthony, would A be Anthony McGrath, then there are 2 international cricketers called Anthony, so C could be one of them - Basil Anthony or Hamish Anthony? - --Roberry (talk) 16:51, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You mean A or B when you speak of Anthony McGrath? Who would be your A and B? Neither of A through E is unique... Ovshake (talk) 16:57, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, B shall be Anthony McGrath and C can be Hamish Anthony. A can well be Don Bradman. Can someone provide with D and E now? Ovshake (talk) 13:55, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Third sequence is Allan Donald; someone whose middle name is Allan; either Frank Allan or Peter Allan. BlackJack | talk page 14:16, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Middle one is Allan Browne whose full name is Chester Allan Browne. BlackJack | talk page 14:18, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Correct, though I had thought of Charlie Davis when I had thought of D, and struggled to find another (Graham Gooch is, well, Alan, and not Allan). Though Roberry guessed the sequence you gave more correct answers (and found out the more obscure names), so I suppose it's over to you, BlackJack. Ovshake (talk) 14:46, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Allan Browne isn't an international cricketer, but I suppose I should put an end to this question. Ovshake (talk) 16:51, 17 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
