Hi! Reply-link has officially been superseded by mw:DiscussionTools, which you can install using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features. DiscussionTools, developed by the WMF's Editing Team, is faster and has more features than reply-link, and it wouldn't make sense for me to keep developing reply-link. I think the Editing Team is doing amazing work, and look forward to what they can do in the future. Thank you for using reply-link over the years! U.S. military aircraft renaming proposal

edit

Howdy! Since we've been effectively collaborating on the grand reshuffle of U.S. military aircraft lists, I thought I would discuss an idea with you before I formally suggest it. I'd like to move List of military aircraft of the United States (1909–1919) to List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States (pre–1922). In other words, there would be two lists of undesignated aircraft—a modern list and a WWI-era list. Here's my reasoning:

  • All of the U.S. armed services have had one designation system or another continuously in effect since 1922. This list focuses on the era when undesignated aircraft were the norm rather than the exception. 1922 is a logical and easily understandable break point.
  • The list would not be overlong or scattershot; it would not have both the Curtiss Jenny and Citation Excel on it.
  • The source article would not require major surgery. Basically, the 1911 and 1914 U.S. Navy aircraft would be removed, and the lead would be edited—done!

Thoughts, feelings, opinions? Carguychris (talk) 13:01, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Carguychris I was actually thinking the same thing, but one question I have is whether there are enough post-1922 undesignated aircraft to merit a list separate from the pre-1922 list. To my knowledge, most undesignated aircraft used by the US post-1922 were never officially acquired, being loans instead. - ZLEA T\C 14:18, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
ZLEA On second thought, I think I'll keep it simple and propose List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and we'll consider splitting it later. Carguychris (talk) 15:09, 22 September 2021 (UTC)Reply
ZLEA I've proposed the page move as suggested; you're invited to comment. Carguychris (talk) 19:31, 23 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Reorganization of List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States

edit

Howdy! I'm in the process of fleshing out the List of undesignated military aircraft of the United States, and to cut down on the repetition, I'm toying with a presentation similar to the designated aircraft lists, i.e. mission, then manufacturer, then aircraft type. I think this presentation will make the list easier to follow, but it's also going to make it substantially longer, so I'd like your input. A dummy version of the "World War I to World War II" section can be viewed in my sandbox. Carguychris (talk) 17:09, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Carguychris I like the look of it, but one problem I have with separating the list by eras such as "World War I to World War II" is that such eras are not good cutoff points for many branches of the US military. A better way to separate the list (in my opinion) would be by the branches themselves:
  • Army (aircraft operated by the Army and Signal Corps but not by the USAAS/AAC/AAF)
  • Air Force (including the USAAS/AAC/AAF)
  • Navy
  • Marine Corps
  • Coast Guard (the USCG is still military even if it is non-combat)
  • Space Force (not sure if the USSF uses its own aircraft or borrows from other branches)
Another thing to consider is that since the undesignated aircraft do not follow any numeric sequence, perhaps we should consider something like the tables of List of aircraft of the Royal Air Force. I'm thinking that this would be more convenient if we want to list the aircraft by entry into service date. - ZLEA T\C 17:47, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I actually really like the idea of emulating the RAF list because it conveys a lot of information neatly and it's sortable. I hadn't thought of that, thanks! Also, I was already considering eliminating the eras for the exact reasons you suggest, but I'm trying to first formulate a solid plan for reorganizing the list so I don't have to do major surgery twice. Carguychris (talk) 17:58, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm going to start an example table in my sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 17:59, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Comments on the proposed breakdown of the service branches: my brief research suggests that the U.S. Coast Guard has only ever operated a small handful of undesignated aircraft, most of which were borrowed directly from the Navy. A brief USCG list like the ones at the bottom of the RAF list article would probably suffice, rather than a full-blown table. Also, USMC aviation has always operated in practice as a branch of naval aviation, so it's often impractical to disentangle USN aircraft from USMC aircraft, and many reference sources don't even try to do so. They may need to go in the same table. Carguychris (talk) 20:52, 13 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Carguychris I've started the tables in my sandbox. Feel free to add to them or copy them to your own sandbox. - ZLEA T\C 00:45, 14 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I like it! However, I like how the RAF table has a brief aircraft description under "Notes" and blank spaces for unknown dates rather than question marks, so I think I'll make those changes. I'll copy those tables to my sandbox and start building a similar USN/USMC table. Carguychris (talk) 17:00, 14 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Bots Newsletter, December 2021

Bots Newsletter, December 2021

BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the eighth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Maintainers disappeared to parts unknown... bots awakening from the slumber of æons... hundreds of thousands of short descriptions... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

Our last issue was in August 2019, so there's quite a bit of catching up to do. Due to the vast quantity of things that have happened, the next few issues will only cover a few months at a time. This month, we'll go from September 2019 through the end of the year. I won't bore you with further introductions — instead, I'll bore you with a newsletter about bots.

Overall

  • Between September and December 2019, there were 33 BRFAs. Of these,  Y 25 were approved, and 8 were unsuccessful ( N2 3 denied,  ? 3 withdrawn, and   2 expired).

September 2019

Look! It's moving. It's alive. It's alive... It's alive, it's moving, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, it's alive, IT'S ALIVE!
  •  Y Monkbot 16, DannyS712 bot 60, Ahechtbot 6, PearBOT 3, Qbugbot 3 ·  N2 DannyS712 bot 5, PkbwcgsBot 24 ·  ? DannyS712 bot 61, TheSandBot 4
  • TParis goes away, UTRSBot goes kaput: Beeblebrox noted that the bot for maintaining on-wiki records of UTRS appeals stopped working a while ago. TParis, the semi-retired user who had previously run it, said they were "unlikely to return to actively editing Wikipedia", and the bot had been vanquished by trolls submitting bogus UTRS requests on behalf of real blocked users. While OAuth was a potential fix, neither maintainer had time to implement it. TParis offered to access to the UTRS WMFLabs account to any admin identified with the WMF: "I miss you guys a whole lot [...] but I've also moved on with my life. Good luck, let me know how I can help". Ultimately, SQL ended up in charge. Some progress was made, and the bot continued to work another couple months — but as of press time, UTRSBot has not edited since November 2019.
  • Article-measuring contest resumed: The list of Wikipedians by article count, which had lain dead for several years, was triumphantly resurrected by GreenC following a bot request.

October 2019

November 2019

Now you're thinking with portals.

December 2019

In the next issue of Bots Newsletter:
What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?

  • What happens when two bots want to clerk the same page?
  • What happens when an adminbot goes hog wild?
  • Will reFill ever get fixed?
  • What's up with ListeriaBot, anyway?
  • Python 3.4 deprecation? In my PyWikiBot? (It's more likely than you think!)

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the January 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

hellow. the word "saeqeh" is 100% arabic meaning thunderbolt. Azarakhsh is the persian word for thunderbolt.Sikorsky Cyclone (talk) 10:18, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sikorsky Cyclone When I pop صاعقه into Google Translate, it automatically detects it as Persian for "lightning". If you read the Arabic script article, you will notice that the first sentence states that the script is used not only used for Arabic, but many other languages as well (the first listed being Persian). Now I ask you, do you read Arabic script? Can you be 100% certain that the script is not meant to be Persian? - ZLEA T\C 15:16, 20 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

206 navbox

edit

Hi Z, thanks for creating the Template:JetRanger family navbox. I actually started on doing one last week, but realized I didn't have enough time and closed it out uncreated. I was also thinking about one for the F-5 and F-18 families, since they are distantly but directly related. Do you think that would work? Regards. BilCat (talk) 00:15, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Btw, I was going to include the Bell 47J Ranger, as it's sort of a predecessor, especially of the HO-4. Do you think that would be worth adding? BilCat (talk) 00:23, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

BilCat I had considered including the Model 47J in the navbox, but I had found no evidence that the Ranger and JetRanger were actually related other than name. I would not be opposed to adding it if we can find that they shared a development lineage. As for an F-5/F-18 navbox, I think it would work. - ZLEA T\C 01:13, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
BilCat On the 47J, it's probably more of a "spiritual" connection, as shown by the name, with Bell wanting to capitalize on the previous name, and it worked. I used to have a source that talked about the redesign of the 206, and it might have mentioned that sort of connection. As to the F-5 and F-18, there's a definite evolutionary design connection, which is covered in the YF-17 article, though there are no common parts, of course. Also, I can see the family resemblance in the HESA Saeqeh, which is an F-5 with F-18-style twin fins. It's quite remarkable, to me anyway. BilCat (talk) 01:54, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I agree about the HESA Saeqeh, along with the more blatant HESA copies. I'm working on the navbox now and am including the Iranian aircraft in the list of foreign variants. As for the 47J, I'm fine with inclusion in the JetRanger navbox as a predecessor, and possible as a variant if a direct developmental lineage can be confirmed. - ZLEA T\C 02:00, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
If I can jump in here - there is no design linage or parts commonality shared between the Bell 47J Ranger and the Bell 206 Jet Ranger. Bell just liked the marketing value of the Ranger name and decided to keep it for the turbine 206. - Ahunt (talk) 02:09, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
On the 47J, I think we could put it in a See also in the footer. Z, thanks for going ahead and creating the F-5 navbox. Though I fully intended to do it myself, and I wasn't fishing for someone to do it for me (although I have been known to do that!), I do appreciate it very much. BilCat (talk) 03:28, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I don't mind creating these navboxes. It gives me something to do between semesters when I don't have access to my university's library to create obscure aircraft articles. - ZLEA T\C 03:31, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
No problem. I was going to name it "F-5 and F-18 families", and have the two types separated to make clear that while there is a direct connection, it's a distant one. Do you think that would work better? BilCat (talk) 03:48, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
That would probably be better. - ZLEA T\C 03:49, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
I didn't think to nest them. It's done. - ZLEA T\C 04:01, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
On the 47J, I think we could put it in a See also in the footer. - works for me! - Ahunt (talk) 03:52, 23 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft)

edit

Hi ZLEA, just a reminder that new templates/navboxes need to be added to Wikipedia:New articles (Aircraft). Generally, editors are expected to add their own creations there. I've been lax on doing that myself for navboxes I make, but it is helpful to other editors to know what's been created recently. Thanks. BilCat (talk) 05:06, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

BilCat Thanks for letting me know. - ZLEA T\C 13:47, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Washington quarter design

edit

Well, obviously we have an issue regarding the new Gardin design. If we put the high-res one from the Mint image library it will be deleted since it is from that contractor. The sketch used in the competition looks a bit different than the actual coin, certainly the mint mark is in a different spot. We may have to actually photograph one unless you have an idea.--Wehwalt (talk) 03:10, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Wehwalt The only other idea I can think of is finding a coin grading service which releases their images under a compatible license. As far as I can tell, none of the major grading services use such a license, but it's probably something we should look into further. - ZLEA T\C 03:43, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Bots Newsletter, January 2022

BRFA activity by month

Welcome to the ninth issue of the English Wikipedia's Bots Newsletter, your source for all things bot. Vicious bot-on-bot edit warring... superseded tasks... policy proposals... these stories, and more, are brought to you by Wikipedia's most distinguished newsletter about bots.

After a long hiatus between August 2019 and December 2021, there's quite a bit of ground to cover. Due to the vastness, I decided in December to split the coverage up into a few installments that covered six months each. Some people thought this was a good idea, since covering an entire year in a single issue would make it unmanageably large. Others thought this was stupid, since they were getting talk page messages about crap from almost three years ago. Ultimately, the question of whether each issue covers six months or a year is only relevant for a couple more of them, and then the problem will be behind us forever.

Of course, you can also look on the bright side – we are making progress, and this issue will only be about crap from almost two years ago. Today we will pick up where we left off in December, and go through the first half of 2020.

Overall
In the first half of 2020, there were 71 BRFAs. Of these,  Y 59 were approved, and 12 were unsuccessful (with  N2 8 denied,  ? 2 withdrawn, and   2 expired).

January 2020

Issues and enquiries are typically expected to be handled on the English Wikipedia. Pages reachable via unified login, like a talk page at Commons or at Italian Wikipedia could also be acceptable [...] External sites like Phabricator or GitHub (which require separate registration or do not allow for IP comments) and email (which can compromise anonymity) can supplement on-wiki communication, but do not replace it.

Conclusion

  • What's next for our intrepid band of coders, maintainers and approvers?
  • Will Citation bot ever be set free to roam the project?
  • What's the deal with all those book links that InternetArchiveBot is adding to articles?
  • Should we keep using Gerrit for MediaWiki?
  • What if we had a day for bots to make cosmetic edits?

These questions will be answered — and new questions raised — by the February 2022 Bots Newsletter. Tune in, or miss out!

WP:AFC Helper News

edit

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. no it is the an225 indeed

edit

well, maybe you do not know all history, but checked also with the director and other people of Aviation Safety, satellite images and many opinions and we concluded, the hangar is she, the an124 is in the closed hangar in front this opened. the an225 could not take off according previously, they even tried, but a motor of 6, so even empty with 5 the repairs were not finished and then in doubt they left the aircraft there ... the paradox is the ukrainian air forces were trying to fight the marines trucks of russian invaded and it came two air surfaces missiles, one at rear and one at front. The guy of Aviation safety has 75 years experience with aircraft crashes so believe his eyes are good enough to discerne about now only expects a photo of russians confirming the structure rupture https://aviation-safety.net/ --90.186.219.179 (talk) 17:04, 3 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Please show me where it has been confirmed that the aircraft is the An-225. aviation-safety.net is not an official source that has access to Antonov Airport at this time, so they are going off of the same information we are. Misinformation about the war is rampant, so you can't just believe everything you see on Twitter. The An-124 can be easily mistaken for the An-225 when the wings and tail are obscured by smoke. This coupled with the apparent mismatched hangar damage seems to indicate that the video is of a different hangar and aircraft. Furthermore, there may have been several An-124s in hangars identical to the An-225's hangar.
Also, I fail to see a paradox in what you said. - ZLEA T\C 17:20, 3 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
